Preferred Solution: Can't access System Properties, window flashes closed Shadow volume?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I solved this by downloading the second Vista patch and reinstalling it.

hey everyone, i am curious if volume shadow copy needs to be enabled in windows 7 in order for system restore to work? i have read that VSC should always be on, but on my laptop it was not. if i needed to restore back to one of my restore points say, 6 months from now, and i didnt have VSC on, would i run into trouble trying to use my restore point? just a question out of curiosity

thanks,
alex

A:system restore and volume shadow copy

The Volume Shadow Service (VSS), sometimes referred to as Volume Shadow Copy or Volume Snapshot Service, is a service that allows you to restore certain system files to an earlier point in time. VSS creates most of the files it needs in the System Volume Information Folder which can be found on the root of each volume. This folder is locally accessed by System Restore when reverting to an entire previous set of shadow copies called Restore points. When the system needs to be restored, files and settings are copied from the shadow copy to the live volume used by Windows 7 (and Vista). Volume Shadow Copy is a service that creates and maintains snapshots (shadow copies) of disk volumes in Windows 7 and Vista. It is the back-end of the System Restore feature, which enables you to restore your system files to a previous state in case of a system failure (e.g. after a failed driver or software installation). What you should know about Volume Shadow Copy/System Restore in Windows 7 & Vista (FAQ)Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider in Windows 7System Restore and Shadow CopyHow Volume Shadow Copy Service Works

Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section - noob in this forum System Win Ultimate x on an HP Pavilion DV My account is the only proper user account on the laptop and is an admin account In short when trying to do a system restore it come up with an error that the Volume Shadow Copy Service was not working though that error (access Volume Copy when (VSS) service denied) Shadow starting Error 5 code is irrelevant for the purposes of this question as I later Error 5 (access denied) when starting Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) managed to run system restore in safe mode from an age old restore point When checking services msc run as admin VSS was off and was on manual Changed it to automatic and then when I tried clicking start the following error came up Windows could not start the Volume Shadow Copy service on Local Computer Error Access is denied I have since tried everything I can possibly think Error 5 (access denied) when starting Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) of including setting it back and forth between manual amp auto to get the service to start to no avail Solutions tried so far - net start vss in elevated cmd - returns the same error error access is Error 5 (access denied) when starting Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) denied - vssvc exe in elevated cmd - same - changed permissions to full control for myself admin group and NETWORK SERVICE which I had to add for System folder and for vssvc exe but no change - changed permissions to full control for myself admin group and NETWORK SERVICE which I again had to add for VSS in regedit opened as admin still nothing - even tried restarting explorer exe from an elevated cmd and an elevated task manager and did the permissions again - still nothing The only thing I haven't done yet is run an sfc scan but tbh I doubt that'll fix anything It also seems that VSS has been off for a while as my last restore point was approx months ago and I've installed things since Any suggestions ideas would be very much appreciated as I'm going nuts with this now Thank you

A:Error 5 (access denied) when starting Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS)

Just writing an update to say I managed to solve the problem by turning off my AV completely before starting the service and it worked (I obviously changed it back to manual once it started)!

Annoyingly, I had actually already tried this before by turning off individual components of my AV at a time (eg firewall), but for some reason had overlooked trying to turn the whole thing off...

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea what in the AV (KIS 2015) would be blocking VSS from starting suddenly (I haven't changed any of its settings from before the issue arose)?

Had a 50gb Win 7 (x64) system image on a 66gb partition. It was a good image, because I had to use it to restore once. Decided to do a new one, so in setting up the new backup I deleted the old one first within the Win backup process. Then I ran the new one and it fails for lack of space to create the Volume Shadow Copy. The partition currently has 65gb free. Just to check, I tried on another partition with much more free space and got the same result. Where might the hang up be? Thanks,

Goto system properties and then system security. Configure it. Is it enabled? How many percent and disk space?

Just FYI in scanning elsewhere on the Web I've found other posts that report this same behavior. For example: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-genera...talling-s.html (no resolution). This posting may offer some relief, and recommends uninstalled the USB Root Hub drivers so they can be rediscovered upon bootup: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-genera...ecognized.html. Haven't tried this yet, though, so I don't know if it helps or not.

Avast Bug

Please read https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=162041.0
Also check https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=166697.0

Avast sets System Restore disk usage % to 50.

You can try:
- go to control panel-> programs and features -> Avast -> change
- remove the component NG (down below).
- change % back to 10% (windows default) or whatever you like it
- restart
- check if % is what you set
- check restore points (seems this NG delete old restore points when run out of space)
- manually create a restore point if there are none
- open command prompt ->vssadmin list shadowstorage
- see how much space it takes.

You can also try uninstalling Grimefighter if above won't solve your problem.

I am running Windows Vista home basic. 32bit.

Yesterday, when I logged in my system icons were gone, my desktop icons were gone, I can't right click on the desktop.
I also can't use ctrl, alt & delete to access the task manager.
I did right click on the taskbar and bring up the properties. I then clicked on the notification area to see if I could just click on them in there but they are grayed out.

I've run a virus scan using Norton's but haven't run any spyware/malware software since I don't have any d/l into this computer.
I was hoping maybe it was something simple that maybe my daughter's did.
I deleted all the other user accounts in case it was a corrupted user account.
It didn't help so I'm lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi guys, trust everyone had a good Xmas...

Over the holdiays, I ran a scheduled check on all my hardware....i.e., spring clean/full service....

I found that my main workstation (Win 7 Pro 32bit) had ceased backing up on my Win Home Server since 10th Dec. Checked out other systems & their backups, & no problems found, they are still backing up daily (Vista Bus,Win 7 Pro 32bit & Win 7 Ult 64bit).

On checking with the MS WHS forum, found that VSS must be enabled, so checked mine out....& found that it had stopped. Restarted service & did a manual backup at that time which was successful.

However, the automatic daily backup is still failing & on checking, found that the VSS service is stopped again.

No new programs have been installed since 10th Dec, so any idea as to what may cause this service to be repeatedly stopped?

Cannot pinpoint when this started but was probably after installing updates to windows 7. 5/15/2014

A:Volume Shadow Copy

Go to Start > Search then type vssvc.exe it should be found in C:\Windows\System32 folder, if it is found in some other location, copy and paste it into the System32 folder, see if the error is resolved.

Also check that the volume shadow service is running, and set to Automatic. To check that the service is running, in the search box, type compmgmt.msc , once in Computer Management go down to Services then check the Volume Shadow service.

If it is not found at all, go back to Start > Search at type cmd.exe right click on it, then choose Run as Administrator, in the command prompt type sfc /scannow this will restore any missing or corrupt system files.

Therefore system restore doesn't work, good job I use Roll back RX, but it's still annoying. Tried manually starting VSS service but it says access denied, and all its asscoiated services are enabled. It also says file not found. I've never deleted anything like that off my system and it's not as if it's asking for a missing DLL? I would restore back to an earlier date but...well you see my problem! Rollback was only bought when I realised system restore wasn't working... I could live without it but it's always nice to know your new operating system functions the way it should. I have had problem after problem with Vista... Anyhow, some advice would be great. Thanks.

I have used and configured Volume Shadow Copy at work on my servers, but now I'd like to use it at home on my Windows XP Sp2 desktop and it occurs to me that the tabs aren't there. I've noted this before but now I figure I should pursue this to it's conclusion.

I know that XP Sp2 has VSS, and I've seen the services, even started them to see if that would make any difference, but I still have no Shadow Copies tab in the root drive properties box on any drive letter, which is where it is on my W2K3 servers...

Can anybody tell me decisively why this is? If it has the services then why can I not configure Shadow Copies on my XP Workstation? Is it only there to provide consistent backup to 3rd party programs?

That would seem unnecessarily restrictive when there is no real need...

For System restore again you can try this.

From (Admin) Command Prompt copy and paste this and press Enter sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Again run sfc /scannow

Reboot Laptop and try system restore. Not sure if any possible infection may be causing this also as i am not a malware expert to say.

A:question regarding volume shadow copy

The "shadow copy" is used for a simulation of the files that are in use and can't be copied. The shadow is the condition that the file was in before it was called into use, which is what prevents it from being copied directly.

The "volume shadow copy" comprises the files that can be copied and the pre-call condition of the files that can't be copied when ntbackup is invoked on a volume.

...more or less; a very simplified version.

I use BootIt Next Generation. I prefer "rock solid" much more than speed.

Hi I'm running Windows Home Ultimate bit My problems started few weeks ago supposedly after I have installed the latest version of my antivirus AVG I have uninstalled it but the problems stay Here are the problems - Volume Shadow Copy hangs When I run 'vssadmin list writers' just ater the boot everything is ok But when I run some application using Volume Shadow Copy Copy Volume Shadow and Shutdown, SFC, freeze like Macrium Refect or other backup software it hangs and the same 'vssadmin list writers' shows many writers in error timed out - windows won't shut down the session closes well but then it hangs Shutdown, SFC, and Volume Shadow Copy freeze on shutdown I've waited for more that h and I have to power it off - SFC hangs It hangs from the very begining - not even a single line stating it has started no use asking me sfc logs there is Shutdown, SFC, and Volume Shadow Copy freeze no log When I run the quot resolve problems quot mode at boot time and try to run sfc then it starts and then immediately tells the system repair needs shutdown to complete - but as the computer can't shut down I'm stuck I have run chkdsk First it hanged too I then ran it successfully in the quot Resolve problems quot mode and for now it's ok Any suggestion would Shutdown, SFC, and Volume Shadow Copy freeze be greatly appreciated

A:Shutdown, SFC, and Volume Shadow Copy freeze

AVG always leaves leftover files (some drivers) which are as problematic as the program itself.

And, after the uninstallation, it is difficult to find out the leftovers, but we may have a try. You upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

Thank you, Gila.

A:Error while creating volume shadow copy

This error is normally caused by the VSS infrastructure (Volume Shadow Copy Serice), and this requires at least one NTFS volume available on the system. Without this, it just reverts into a normal backup mode. In other words, the backup should have been created, but it just wasn't done with the VSC.

The Volume Shadow is a new tech implemented in XP, and attempts to get a perfect backup of all files, including all open and locked ones. If it can't do this, it just does a regular backup similar to how the backup tool worked in previous version of windows (2000 and NT). In most cases, this works fine, but very occasionally some files will be missed from the backup. Normally these are just logfiles, so it doesn't cause a problem.

The only way to get the VSC portion of the backup working is to have an NTFS volume on your system (the reasons behind this I'm not positive on though). You could use convert.exe to convert the file system to an NTFS volume, but remember this is permanent, and can very occasionally cause a corrupted hard drive. I'd suggest doing a full hard drive backup before attempting this.

Additionally, as it only needs one NTFS volume visible (and not even the one it's going to do the backup on) you could take a portion of your existing hard drive, format it NTFS, and re-run the backup. I wouldn't recommend this though, as it sounds like you already have all of your hard drive allocated in the FAT32 partition(s).

Check to see whether you have a backup file you can restore to in the backup tool - basically, it should have created the backup.

Shadow Volume Copies have been a feature since Windows Vista that allows snapshots, or backups, of your files to be saved even when the files are currently in use. These snapshots will attempt to be created every day and allows you to restore documents to previous versions or even to restore them if they were deleted. This same technology is also used by the Windows' System Restore feature that allows you to roll back Windows to a previously working configuration in case there is a problem. Since Windows Vista, Microsoft has been bundling a utility called vssadmin.exe in Windows that allows an administrator to manage the Shadow Volume Copies that are on the computer. Unfortunately, with the rise of Crypto Ransomware, this tool has become more of a problem than a benefit and everyone should disable it.

Read more: Why Everyone Should disable VSSAdmin.exe Now!

A:BleepingComputer.com Says Disable Shadow Volume Copies Now!

TLDR; Rename vssadmin.exe to prevent the certain Crypto Ransomware from deleting your Shadow Volume Copies. Does not prevent Cryto Ransomware. Always keep backup of your data and system images.

Try clicking on the start button, type services.msc in the search box and hit enter. Click on standard at the bottom of the window and scroll almost
all the way down until you reach Volume Shadow Copy. It should be set as Automatic. If it is set as Manual highlight the area and right click on it.
Select Properties. In the drop down menu, select Automatic. Click on Start Service. When it has restarted the VSS, select Apply and Okay. If this
fixed the problem it would be a good idea to create a System Restore point immediately.

The registry value you'd want to check is ImagePath. In your case it seems to point to something that's not being found, or the ImagePath value doesn't exist at all.

======================================

The "description" is just a text string. It's saying "use string index 101 from vssvc.exe in the 'description' field for this service". On my box, which is English Windows, that maps to:

"Manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup ... blah blah"

On yours, the description string embedded in vssvc.exe may be different if it's a Slovenian version.

A:Volume shadow copy error after moving to MSATA SSD...

It took me a while, but I finally figured out what was preventing the creation of the system image. Looking in the event viewer, there were a lot of errors, the first one a CAPI2 error with event 513, then there was a VSS error with the event ID 8228 mentioning invalid character in an XML file.Error said:Fail to parse XML file.Reason An invalid character was found in text content.Line 0x000003c0Position 0x000009c8, The file below is corrupt.Errorcode 0xc00ce508Problem text <WRITER_COMPONENTS xmlns="x-schema:#VssComponentMetadata" instanceId="f96e4a86-3bfc-4ab7-a4d6-5cf3a3e429a5" writerId="be000cbe-11fe-4426-9c58-531aa6355fc4" backupSchema="0"><COMPONENT logicalPath="ASR" componentName="ASR" componentType="filegroup"><BACKUP_METADATA Searching through dozens of threads and trying a number of fixes without luck, I finally found one that mentioned their issue came from bad characters in some of the partition names after cloning with EaseUs Todo Backups. As this is the tool I used to clone my drive onto an SSD, I decide to check it out. The thread mentioned using GPT fdisk utility found on sourceforge, so I downloaded the tool. You simply run the executable in Administrator mode. Finding how to use it was a bit hard, but basically the commands below did the job 0:        -activated the disk 0 which is my disk.i           -allows you to see the information on each partition It will ask for the number. This is an old problem on Win7 - a search of this forum showed no solutions - even though the same issue has been posted for years.

This machine has made system images for about 3 months without issues - last one was yesterday. Used space on the system reserved partition was always about 32 Mb. Suddenly this used space went to about 70 Mb which results in the error. I have no clue how this occurred.

Restoring an older system image apparently only restores the original files, does NOT deal with the excess cruff on the partition. [restoring ANY earlier image still results in 70 Mb as used on the system reserved partition].

How does one clear the useless trash that is located on the system partition so that system images can be made again?

I need a Windows7 based solution - NOT an aftermarket imaging program. [acronis, clonezilla etc.]

TIA

My new Windows 7 computer came with Volume Shadow Copy set to Manual Startup. This is seen when running the Services utility. When would one want Manual versus Automatic Startup?

I don't know if it would affect the following, but the Event Viewer has been flagging an occasional NTFS System error as shown below.

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1. Event ID 55

I'm not convinced that this error is real but am trying to learn more. Running ChkDsk on the entire disk reveals no significant problems.

A:Volume Shadow Copy - Manual or Automatic Startup?

Volume Shadow Copy is set to Manual by default.
Here is a tutorial showing all the default service settings.

As far as the error, here is one thread I found you can look through.
Maybe the error is for a Backup drive, or Restore Points, or ... seems many things might cause this ...

I have recently been infected with the Cryptowall virus which has Cryptowall from shadow... files virus. Restore volume encrypted most of my files I have already done a little research on tis virus and short of paying the ransom to decrypt my files there isn'y much more I can do to restore them One option I found was to use the Volume Shadow copies of the files right click a file- previous versions- copy I read that the virus usually disables encrypts these 'backups also but luckily in my case a few I have already tested on restored successfully So Cryptowall virus. Restore files from volume shadow... my questions are How do I completely remove this virus so I stops encrypting files as I restore them I am fine with a complete format reinstall but that brings up question is there any way to backup the Volume Shadow For example is it a single large file somewhere on my drive that I can just copy to an external drive while I reformat If number above IS possible how do I copy back over this backup to the newly installed OS to be Cryptowall virus. Restore files from volume shadow... able to restore the files I read in my research that there is a tool that would allow me to restore entire folders at a time from the Cryptowall virus. Restore files from volume shadow... Volume Shadow I have already scanned with MBAM and it showed a few results but nothing specifically stating Cryptowall so I am uncertain if it actually removed it or not

Welcome
All that we can do is give our best guess of the cause. I think that in your case your cleaner has made detrimental changes to the registry and it has to be restored. I would go back to before the problem with a system restore. After its fixed, I would no longer the cleaner that has caused the problem in Seven. The fact that it worked in the past has no bearing on the present.
If you are having a problem with System restore try in safe mode. If you do try in safe mode there is no option to return to where you started from.

I was in the process of de-fraging my drives using UniBlue Disk Rescue, and I got the advisory message not to de-frag the C: drive (Windows 7 system drive) because it was owned by volume shadow copy (I back up this drive automatically each week).

Should I worry about not de-fraging the drive or can I turn off volume shadow copy, de-frag, then turn volume shadow copy back on?

I've been using this drive since I installed Win 7 earlier this year and imaging there's a lot of fragments floating around.

Defragging on a normal drive is advised, why not use a de-fragger that can do C:\ like the built in one, or perfect disk?

Does the Volume Shadow Copy Service that comes with Windows Server 2003 only start and come in to the running state in service control when it is actually taking a snapshot?

I have been googling and reading articles but they tend to all just tell me the basics of how to use it or the architecture of it, and I've been unable to find the answer to my question, so I was hoping that someone could share their wisdom on this with me.

Is has been my observation that both services "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" and "Volume Shadow Copy" both come in the Manual Startup Type by default in services. This would seem to support that they do not run all the time to watch things, but only when taking a snapshot?

Can anyone shed more light on this?

Just got laptop for Christmas and has always had this problem so might be a setting.

Have looked at Advanced -> Visual Settings but didn't see any that looked like would fix (tried setting Best Performance - which turned everything off but didn't fix)

It has been discussed that many of the ransomware programs use the vssadmin exe program that wipes clean all volume shadow copys restoration copies to make recovery of your system impossible Discussions don't recommend disabling the shadow copy program Recovery just the vssadmin exe which erases all recovery copies The main article that details this is here http www bleepingcomputer com news security why-everyone-should-disable-vssadmin-exe-now My disabling (Volume Copy) procedure Shadow vssadmin.exe questions question is that when I follow the instructions in the above article and run the utility it only allows me to alter one of the eight vssadmin exe and vssadmin exe mui files Specifically the utility allowed me to get permission and change the name on the bit version so if hit my ransomware it will not find that file But what about these vssadmin files Do I need to do something about them This is a screen shot of the remaining search results for vssadmin exe AFTER the bit program was renamed in the above referenced link

A:vssadmin.exe (Volume Shadow Copy) disabling procedure questions

Hi, I'm not sure where those two amd64 and x86 folders are.
system32 and SysWOW64 are important system folders for windows. I would definitely disabled, renamed or in any other whay disabled those if possible.
When you have decided to disable vssadmin. If you do similar stuff to notepad.exe you won't be able to run notepad,
so you could experiment by renaming notepad and se when notepad commands does not happen.
windows do protect some files especially important dll-files and some exe-files (Application Extension and Applications)

The MUI files or Windows Multilingual User Interface are simply files needed for Windows to display messages etc. in different languages.
Those are not porgrams / applications. Read more here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb978454.aspx
The last line, I have no idea, about the whereabouts.

In general I disable all files with similar names in different locations, if I want to disable something.
in cmd you might try to run a command, after it is renamed, just to see if another verison is running (in cmd set, or simply the command path)
Here you will se details about how your windows is set up.

in cmd with admin rights (elevated rights) , you can run this command.
c:
cd \
dir c:\vssadmin.exe /s /a /b
or as you have done
dir c:\vssadmin.* /s /a /b

Then you can find the exact locations.
dir /? gives you help and is similar to help dir. Pretty much all MS-commands supports /?

If you want to save the lines in a report you could do this
dir c:\vssadmin.exe /s /a /b >> c:\myreport.txt
You might have to save at a different location, depending on policy setting on your windows
c:\users\yourusername\Desktop Assuming you run Windows 7

I recently did a clean install of Windows 7-64bit and the computer has been running very smooth for the last week. Last night (08/18/2016) I installed a couple of windows updates and while checking the reliability monitor in the action center after installing the updates I noticed a new entry "Generic Volume Shadow Copy"; I'm aware that it's related to restore points, but I've never seen this entry in the reliability monitor section. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I use Paragon Backup version 10.2 in Windows 7 premium 64 bit to backup to an external USB Hard Drive. Backup used to work fine but now the backups fail halfway through. I've traced the problem through the Event viewer to be caused by:
"Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state"

How do I prevent the Volume Shadow Copy service from entering the stopped state during a backup?
Thanks.

P.S. The error message during Paragon's backup is
Backup [virtual] succeeded

Backup [committed] failed
VSS: Can't read volume data
Error code 0x 12016

When I switched Paragon to use its own hot processing instead of Window's the error message became:

"Backup [virtual] succeeded

Backup [committed] failed
VSS: Can't read volume data
Error source: Hard disk manager
Error code 0x 12016"

Scanned with MBAM and Clamwin. Clamwin first reported a false positive and MBAM reported a trojan twice now. Anyway, MBAM gives me the actual folder location, but I can't get in to my system volume restore folder. I have tried what they say here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q309531 However, nothing seems to work. The trojan is called C:\System Volume Information\_restore{170849D5-BECD-4A44-AFDB-9EF0A900ED2C}\RP61\A0010155.exe (Trojan.Downloader) Alls I need to do is get in there and delete it. Perhaps you could show me a way to gain access?

A:Can't access System volume restore

It's not easy to get into the System Volume Information folder. And, once you're in, it's very easy to break the restore points. The virus isn't affecting you from the System Volume Information folder, so I'd suggest leaving it alone for the time being.Concentrate on ensuring that your system is running well and it virus free. To double check, you can use these free online scans: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/usas...?showentry=1252Once it's clean and you're sure that it's running well - then disable System Restore and reboot your computer (this will delete all restore points - and the virus along with it). Then, immediately restart System Restore and make another restore point - just in case.

Well...the Windows partition files...are the concern here, I think.

But it's simple enough to check on both partitions...one will be C:, one will be J:.  It's probably wise to check both, IMO.

VSS is important when it comes to backing up the system.

Hi there! I just switched to Vista and as usual, I downloaded Piriform's Defraggler (as I "hate" Windows Defraggler). Anyways, I did a defrag and a message poped up saying that some files were not defragged. So, I checked the files and it was System Volume Information. Now I know by default you don't have access to this folder (I am logged in as the Administrator), so I went to see If I had permission to it, I also made the "Hidden Files and Folders" show. Nothing changed, I still don't have access to the System Volume Information. I know that Windows Defraggler somehow bypasses that, but I REALLY hate using it.

System volume information is owned by the user group "system" Even admins dont have rights to it. Only way I can think of is to take ownership of it (perhaps in DOS) from another OS or DVD.

That may make the HD unusable.

However , since then I am unable to access C:System Volume Information - I get the message .... C:\System Volume Information is not accessible . Access Denied . Mousing over the folder I am told the folder is empty . Also when I go into C:\Recycler there is always one folder in there that I cannot delete as it is "being used by another person or program . I have tried renaming it , Advanced Uninstaller Pro , etc . I even restored it but it keeps coming back to Recycler and always the same story ! Does anyone have any ideas how to get these back to normal ?

Access denied - H:\system volume information,

I?m confronting serious problem due the virus that

1. Hides folders
2. Generate shortcuts

Through the search in the web, none of the solutions could remove this virus!

According to one of the advices, the hidden file on a particular hard drive can be shown by applying the command

F:\>attrib ?s ?h *.* /s /d

I tried it, But it ended up with (also attached):

Access denied - H:\system volume information,

What might be the issue here?

I don?t know the use of the antivirus software! They do nothing! Nothing at all

Thank you

Hello friends!

I am working with Windows XP SP2. I am facing a problem in accessing the folder alled "Syatem Volume Information". I found this folder in all the drives of my HDD, but whenever I click in any of them using Windows Explorer, I get an error saying "System Volume Information is not accessable, Access is denied".

I have disabled the System Restore feature and I guess this folder is used to store files of System Restore. Even after disabling System Restore, there are files left in this folder which is using a good amount of my HDD space.

Please tell me as to how can I access the contents of this folder and is it safe to delete whatever is in that folder. Moreover, as I already disabled the system restore feature, is there a way to completely remove this folder.

Thank you.

A:Solved: Problem to access System Volume Information Folder?

Hi,

Yes, the SVI (System Volume Information) folder is where SR (System Restore) restore points are stored. SR will place a SVI folder on every partition it sees. This will include external hard drives and some flash drives. There is no way to permanently remove the SVI folder, other than hiding the partition with 3ed party partitioning software. Normally disabling SR empties the SVI folder.

Here are instruction on how to access the SVI folder.
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#SRFileLocation

If the Indexing Service is turned on you will see a catalog.wci folder in the SVI folder.

New install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

What causes ghosting or shadowing from a previous window on the desktop or next window you have on top?

As we were setting up the wireless connection a pop-up from the network icon in the lower right taskbar area seemed to ghost or shadow on the next window that came to the top and even the desktop. It did not go away till the PC was restarted. This was a Windows 7 pop-up, not a software popup.

1) Aero turned on.

2) web page is scrolled using the scroll wheel

SYMPTOM: a very brief total blanking of the firefox window--just the webpage area--not the tabs, menu, borders, etc.

If I use the scroll bar instead of the mouse, no problem. If I turn off aero, then I can use the mouse scroll wheel and no problem. Browse with IE--no problem either.

Something wacky going on with the mouse driver?

This issue has happened with several Nvidia drivers put out in 2009.

Howdy, got an unusual problem with the CLI window in every command-line exe I try to run. I have several MBR backup utilities and all of them are acting up i.e., when I open the exe, there's a quick flash view of the interface, then it's gone. Nowhere to be found. If it's running somewhere, I can't find it. It's not in processes, either. The XP Run/Cmd util works fine, by the way. I can open the said exe in the cmd window but it's awkward for me to run it there. Anyone know what I have to change to make this work like it should? I'd really appreciate.

The folders on my external hard disk are not visible. I followed Cottonball's suggestion from one of the threads on using Roguekiller to eliminate the virus. I downloaded RogueKiller and scanned my disk. After that i deleted the malware it detected.

Subsequently, I also tried the following command:

attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d F:\*.*

After doing all of this still i am unable to access system volume information. I guess The virus persists. any help to fix this issue will be highly appreciated.

A:External disk -folders not visible -access denied system volume info

Hello zoyana Welcome to the Seven Forums!

If you had a spare hard drive to back files upto the live and harder manual method would allow you to use a live Linux disk in order to copy and paste files over to the second drive and then simply nuke the external to insure it was totally bug free seeing an entirely new volume created in it's place. That would still require tunning a thorough bug sweep over the rescues files to insure none had been recoded by the malware however.

For using the other guy's OS for a project like this I can point you to an older thread showing to make a live data recovery flash drive with ubuntu at the time seen at Using the "Other OS" For a USB Rescue Device?

Presently Linux Mint or Linux Mint Debian would the slightly larger but preferred distro. Knoppix Live on dvd only is also one of the others for this providing the partition information is intact. If the partition table is toast due to corruption then other options like disk recovery program would then be needed to restore the partition(s) on the drive itself.

A fast test would be going into the Disk Management tool however found under Adminstrative tools/Computer management/Storage and right clicking on the effected volume to use the change drive letter option. That will show if the volume is able to be remounted in Windows without problems.

If that fails then the live method for data recovery would be an option to consider since the distro is not able to be infected by the malware itself. But the security sweep over all files recovered would still be the advice given.
