Quick Launch Taskbar Icons Problem

Q: Quick Launch Taskbar Icons Problem

My Vista taskbar icons are set to large and the taskbar is not locked - no problems ever. However, I have just installed the latest Adobe Reader update (9.1.3) and several of the taskbar quick launch 'buttons' show and work but the icons themselves do not show - ie the icons are blank. I have tried re-installing the shortcuts, also changing the icons to small but that makes no difference. Not sure where to go from here? Also carried out a full virus scan but nothing found.

Preferred Solution: Quick Launch Taskbar Icons Problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Longbelly,

You might see if rebuilding the icon index may help. If not, then you might see if changing the icons for the shortcuts to themselves (default ones) a few times can restore them.

Hope this helps,

The image below shows my current taskbar when I open a window that has a quick-launch icon (e.g. Opera) as you can see it combines the window and the quick-launch icon together however I would like it to create a separate taskbar item rather than doing this. Would this be possible? Are there any programs that fix this? Sorry if this seems like a vague question but it's quite hard to explain when I can't actually show what I want it to look like.

Thanks .

Hi everyone!

I joined this community to get a solution to my problem that came up yesterday. I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. In the course of my work, my taskbar buttons for my running programs suddenly disappeared. The quick launch icons all showed and expanded to the right with the dotted separator beside the start button visible but the second dotted separator after the last quick launch icon which you can drag also disappeared. System restore did not work and always resulted in errors. Now, I'm just using alt+tab to change windows but I'm not used to it and is uncomfortable for me.

Any suggestions Friends on what I should do? I hope you can help me with my problem.

Hi All

Whenever I restart the computer or something goes wrong with explorer.exe and it has to close down, the items in QL all revert back to alphabetical order. I have it set up so the ones I use more often, are displayed and the rest are hidden away in the extension. Is there a way I can 'lock' these items in place?

Today I noticed that there is a small problem in the height of the Win7 taskbar if I select Large icons in the Quick Launch toolbar. (before I always used small icons)

In the Large view the Win7 taskbar doesn't fill the space vertically but is aligned to the top leaving some empty space at the bottom.
Please check the attached screenshots to better understand what I mean.

I know is really a small detail, but maybe someone knows a way around it anyway^^

Check this Data value in the registry. (backup your registry before you make any changes)
Start> Run> type regedit then hit OK.
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Click on Winlogon folder in the left pane and look for Userinit in the right panel.
The data value for Userinit should be C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,
including the comma at the end. If you make a change, close regedit and reboot your computer.

Right click on All Programs and select explore. Expand “Programs” and drag or paste a shortcut for the program you want to run at startup into the “Startup” folder.

You can just drag icons from your desktop to the quick launch.

To add stuff to the system tray (which is what I think you want to do) you can get one of dozens of freeware tray managers. This one looks like it will do what you want: If you don’t like that have a look through this list:

You might have a look at RunIt. You just right click on the top of the screen and a menu drops down. You can put anything you want in the menu. It is a lot easier than looking through all of the icons in the tray:

I keep 'losing' my quick-launch icons on the left-hand side of the task-bar. The icons first become inoperative, and shortly afterwards vanish altogether. Hovering the mouse pointer over the quick-launch corner does briefly produce the outline of buttons, and the "tip box", but nothing further. They do return if I re-boot, but are soon gone again. If I right-click-Open Folder, Win explorer opens the folder containing the links, and clicking on those links does work. Any ideas folks?

My wife has somehow changed the size of the icons in her QLT (Vista OS) and, as a result the toolbar is twice as broad as it was.

I have checked that the toolbar is not locked and then tried to reduce the size of the toolbar with the double arrow tool but without success. I can raise the toolbar to halfway up the screen but it will only reduce back to the current enlarged state.

I had wondered if the enlarged QLT icons are restricting the size of the toolbar or have the icons increased in size because the toolbar is now broader????
Interestingly, the icons and clock in the bottom right remain at their original size.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi All,

My system has been behaving erratically these past few days. I have just installed critical updates for windows vista basic 32bit and at restart, some of my quick launch bars icons were showing blanks. I have tried several system restores without much joy there. Trojan and virus scans have also drawn a blank. Can someone help, before I resort to a total system reinstall?

A:Quick Launch Bar icons not showing

Right click on the taskbar , click on Toolbars and click on New Toolbar:
Now type: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch and press Enter.
Your quick launch should come up.

The icons in the quick-launch bar (or whatever it's called now, since it works differently after all) frequently change image. For the first few days it was all normal, then the WMP and IE(32-bit) icons swapped image, and now the WMP image has turned into my C drive's image (and IE(32-bit)'s back to normal. The 64-bit icon hasn't changed yet, by the way). They still work normally though. How to stop them from switching image?

Interestingly, this also happened on Windows XP (which was 32-bit, not the 64-bit unlike this Windows 7). However, this is a different HD, so it's definitely not a HD issue (well, unless both happen to have the same problem, but what's the chance?).

What you need to do is clear and rebuild the icon cache.- Download Extract the contents to a folder.- Right-click on rebuild_icon_cache.cmd and select Run as administrator.

I have installed Quick Launch on my Windows 10 task bar. It works !

However, I would like to reorder the icons in a way that makes sense to me. The only reordering I have been able to discover so far is to move an icon to the end of the list. Is there a way to directly order them?

Hi , I hope this will be a simple problem. I have an older friend with windows XP and I have the same OS. I am trying to find a way to make her quick launch icons larger. I found a thread in here said to right click on a blank spot in quick launch and go to view. First I did that , could not find view. ( I have XP pro don't know if it is different there) then I right clicked went to open folder/ view .. am not sure that is what they meant but nothing there that would let me enlarge the icons, nothing about size. I have hunted high and low in there . Am I missing something ? This is not for me. I can see mine perfectly but this elderly lady can't.. so please someone help. PS She has an lcd monitor so she can't change her resolution . Thank you in advance.

I must have done something to lose my quick launch icons (on the task bar next to the start button).

They are still somewhere in the computer, because when I tried to drag these icons from the desktop, it said that they were already there. I have managed to put them into the Startup, which means that I have to click Startup and then QuickLaunch - but how can I get those icons back onto the task bar, in the space next to the Start button?

Thanks, Rose-Marie

by the way, I do not get notified by email when you reply - am I not registered?

I uninstalled Copernic Desktop Search on my WinXP Home SP2 system because after updating to the latest version, their tech support couldn't solve why the program's toolbar search box kept reappearing after I deactivated it multiple times.

After the uninstall and reboot, I noticed that my quicklauch icon arrangement reverted to some kind of random order. Even after rearranging them multiple times as I want them and rebooting, they still revert to the random order.

Have a feeling it has something to do with XP user preferences even though I always log on as the same user.

This was not a problem when Copernic was installed. It's as if Copernic's uninstall changed some registry setting.

Hi -- After a hard drive crash in July, my computer got into the habit of disabling my Quick Launch icons.

First, the show desktop icon stopped working, but I found the answer on your site. Today the calculator icon has stopped. I tried searching through the Microsoft Support site, but that was a dizzying task.

Can you help? And is there anything I can do to keep this from happening?

I pray that it doesn't start happening to my other programs.

Thank you, as always.

If this is a recurring issue then I call foul play! Run a virus and adware/spyware scan. It may also be that the HDD has become corrupted and cannot properly store and retrieve random pieces of data.

Hi Guys.
It's the idiot between the chair and the computer again!
I recently uninstalled some seemingly useless programs (which i can't even remember the names of) on my laptop and seem to have lost my quick launch icons. I have tried the obvious like right clicking select properties and clicking on quick launch but it doen't help. Running Win 2K Pro, which I just got a couple of days ago. When I hover the mouse pointer over an icon in the Quick Launch toolbar, a yellow box appears giving me the name of the associated program. For Outlook 2000, besides telling me the program name it tells me what I can do with it ("Send and receive e-mail; manage your schedule, contacts and tasks . . . ."). Is it possible to edit this feature so it only gives me the program name? Or, as an alternative, can I turn this feature off entirely?

Hi all I am fairly new to Windows 7 and its quick launch taskbar. However when I started using it once I clicked on a quick launch icon it stacked it to itself after opening. for instance Firefox or Chrome. Now however when I click one it quick launch icon does not "stack" after opening it creates another icon that then does stack. It now does this for everything on my quick launch. Any ideas. I know it is not a big deal but it drives the old lady crazy and I hate hearing about it LOL Thanks for looking and your help.

A:Windows 7 taskbar quick launch Does not stack creates new

Hello Nick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Technically Quick Launch is a taskbar toolbar and not a pinned item. This is why when you open/run a item from Quick Launch, it will still have a separate icon appear on the taskbar for it's opened window. There's nothing that you could do about this other than pinning the item/program in Quick Launch on the takbar itself instead. This way you could run it from the taskbar instead of Quick Launch.

Hope this helps,

I find it very annoying with labels appearing over the icons when I already know what the icon is for. This is even more annoying when the label covers almost the entire length of the taskbar.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these labels altogether? I suspect it may mean a visit o the registry.

Hello Skippy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since the shortcut uses the {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} GUID, you might see if creating a shortcut using either location below may work for you to then add to Quick Launch or Pin to taskbar.
explorer.exe /e,::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

explorer shell:::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}
If that doesn't work for you, then you could open Network Connections, right click on the dial-up network connection, and click on Create shortcut. This will place a shortcut of it on your desktop than can then be place in Quick Launch.

I am new to Windows 7. In XP and Vista, the QL icons would stay on the left side of the taskbar, while the open programs populated across the taskbar. Is there a way to keep this setup? I do not like the look of the "always combine" option, preferring to see everything open until the taskbar is filled and then have the programs begin to stack/combine. However, with the "combine when full" option, the unopen icons get distributed between open program tabs. Thanks!

The most critical question, related to remote printing from XP machines, is asked here: Printer plugged into Win7 box - how to print from remote XP machine? and if someone can take a crack at that, great.

The other questions for now are more trite.

Keeping icons "locked in place" in the quick launch area: At my office, I have Win7 (actually I have XP, but then I log into another machine using VMWare, and that one runs Windows 7) and, as I'm used to from XP and earlier Windows editions, the quick launch icons "stay put." In my new Windows 7 setup though, if (for example) I am using Firefox, the taskbar button showing my Firefox session plops itself into the quick launch area, shoving the other icons there to the right. Since I'm often running multiple applications it gets really weird looking - quick launch icon, taskbar buttons for that application, next quick launch icon, taskbar buttons for that application, etc. My taskbar is "locked" - how do I make the quick launch icons stay put, and the application task buttons build up to the right of the quick launch area?

Sleeping PC and waking it: Sorry if my terminology is wrong here. With my XP setup, after some amount of time I'd be kicked back to the login screen, although my applications would continue to run; I'd just need to re-enter my password to log on and return to the session. With Windows 7, the computer appears to be off. I think the drives and the fans all stop (it seems that way - have not had Windows 7 long enough to confirm) and the computer doesn't respond to the mouse or keyboard to "wake up" - I have to press the power button on the computer, and then the login screen comes up immediately and I can log in and resume my still-there session. Is there a way to make the computer respond to keyboard or mouse and wake up, rather than the power button? Maybe this is a bios setting? When the computer is "hard asleep" like that, can things like antivirus scans and Windows updates, which I normally run at night, still go, or is that locked out too?

Ill have to get back to you on the first question as I think I need to read it (or see an example of what is happening now) in order to understand it more.

For the second question, When a machine goes to sleep, nothing is running but just enough processor and your RAM to restore everything to the order it was in when it is put to sleep. Nothing is running when the computer is asleep as the hard drive(s) are turned off.

In regards to your Windows XP issue (if it even is one), it's a screen saver setting (Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver). For your sleepy time with Windows 7, that's a power setting. Open your Start Menu and type "power settings" and the first entry should be "Change power-saving settings". From there you can set when or if you want the machine to sleep after x minutes or hours or not at all. If your machine is not waking to input devices, that is a bios setting, I believe. Since I'm typing this, I cannot check my bios to confirm what it might be called.

Like I said, I'll re-read your first question and try to answer it. If you can provide a screen shot or two to illustrate what you're talking about, that'd be excellent.

I created a quick launch bar for the taskbar. My taskbar is two rows high. When the icons reach the border it's supposed to wrap to the next row below it but it doesn't do this even though there is clearly enough room. I have to make my taskbar three rows high in order for it to wrap. Here are some pics to show you:

Maybe it's the space in between the rows of icons that's wasting the room? Is there a way to fix this? Possibly shorten the gap in between. It just looks awkward with that empty row on the bottom. I know if I change to small icons then they will fit on a two row taskbar but small icons are too small for me.

Are you using large icons for the taskbar buttons? If not, then that could be why there's not enough space for the larger icons in Quick Launch to fit in only two taskbar levels.Taskbar - Use Small or Large Icons

a minor question perhaps. I drag program icons to quick launch taskbar and they are the usual icon only smaller. the big blue W for word though turns into some nondescript thing. anyway to get the big blue W?

also I dragged some folders like documents, etc and they all look the same (little tiny folders). anyway to visually differentiate them> I know one can mouse over and see what they are, but perhaps there is a way to use text?

sure is nice to have a completely icon free desktop now :-)

Ok got it. If you want to change the icon for a folder, then right click on the shortcut, and select "properties"
Then click on the "shortcut" tab. Click on the "change icon" button on the bottom, and you have your selection of preloaded windows icons to choose from. If you choose "browse" from the top, you can select another icon image from another location.

To change something like the Word picture, it should be the same.... hang on... *checks*
The button for change icon doesnt work for my Word shortcut, but it might for yours.

Hello OnePatriot, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if when you go to the hidden Quick Launch C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch system folder, then see if you can change the Trend Micro shortcut's icon to itself a few times to see if the icon will display afterwards.

If not, then you can create a new shortcut from the Trend Micro exe file and move it into the folder above to replace the old one.

I installed Quick Launch on my Taskbar (Windows 7, 64-bit).

I don't know how to position it next to the Start button.

The area in the Taskbar between the Start button and the Quick Launch toolbar appears to be reserved to display open applications.

Dragging the Quick Launch toolbar all the way to the left doesn't work. It stops 2 inches from the Start button, allowing room for open application icons.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm wondering if anyone has a solution to this: lately, when I update an application which I have in my Quick Launch toolbar, its icon move to the end of the list of icons (as if it were a newly installed program and not one that had simply been updated). This means every time I update, say, Firefox, or Thunderbird, or Seamonkey, etc., I have to go into the Quick Launch toolbar and drag it back to its proper place.

Is there any way to address this or is it something that's changed in how Mozilla updates its programs? Ideally (and what used to happen) is that most program icons stayed put after the programs they pointed to were updated.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

A:Order of icons in Quick Launch changes after application updates

What is happening is that the update uninstalls the currently installed version, thus it is no longer in the QL area, then it installs the new version which is placed to the right of all existing icons. At least that is my guess.

Right-click on the IE icon hit click delete, unless you still want to keep it there. If you have the Google Chrome icon on your Desktop drag it down the Quick Launch Area and it will put another icon there.

To make it easier unlock the taskbar and drag the bar on the right side of the Quick Launch Area to the right so all of the icons are showing. Then you can drag them from side to side to get them in the preferred order.

I've rebooted, tried a couple .exe fixes for various icon scrambling issues I've seen elsewhere. Nada.
Images for Icons in quick launch and start up menu are scrambled as shown in image... (incase uploaded pic gives grief)

I haven't changed any system stuff or installed anything new (hw or sw) in quite a while .. Everything has been fine up until a couple of days ago. Please help.

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely frustrated,

Have you tried a System Restore to a point before they started showing like that?

I have two "show desktop" icons in quick launch. The problem is that if I remove one, the other stops working (regardless of which one I remove).

In properties the first "Show Desktop" icon is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

The second is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Type of file: SHORTCUT

Any idea how I can get back to having just one "show desktop" icon on my quick launch?

EDIT: Oops, I think I fixed it - by deleting the one that's a shortcut. Would that be the recommendation?

my laptop runs Win XP Pro SP2 always updated.
I run Norton Antivirus and Ad Aware but didn't find any problem, also run Windows-KB890830-V1.36.exe to find more problems and it found zlob (a bit strange, but....).

I don't use IE 7 but Firefox, but I tried to run it and it hungs up, I unistalled it ok, but when I try to reinstall it againg, it always is downloading updates and never pass that state.

Well, another symptoms are that quick launch toolbar do nothing, I can't explore it, when I click icons there nothing happens.

The icons in the desktop do nothing too, but all of them work if I click right button and select Open.

And last symptom is that WinKey +E do nothing too, but another combinations with WinKey work fine.

Is it possible to have corrupted the information of associated extensions or something like that? any clues?

Thanks in advance.

I need to check on Monday the exact details on this one if something is needed for more information but let's try this if someone has a clear answer and has ran into this before So I have a user in our office who wants to have in Quick Launch a shortcut to a bat-file I copied the out from of icons destroying Quick restart UI? sync - Launch bat on the desktop renamed it to exe pinned a shortcut of it by right-clicking to Quick Launch made it point to the original Quick Launch out of sync - restart destroying icons from UI? bat changed the icon to Winword exe it is under the bat hood a Word VBA application and clicked it Works Everything is fine Ok so just to test it I restart the computer The icon is gone but this folder where QuickLaunch is stored at users appdata roaming you know the place if not I'll provide the exact path for you does have the shortcut For example it doesn't allow me to make the shortcut with same name again because you know of course it is an ambiguous name So it is there The question plain and simply What causes the UI and the QuickLaunch quot actual storage folder quot to be out of sync and or what destroys icons from the UI Any question are welcome but I will answer most of them on Monday when I'm at the user's computer again

It also occurs when I boot up my computer.I am hoping to get this problem fixed. I already have tried using Malwarebytes, but the problem still persists.Thank you for your time.

I have four quick launch icons on the taskbar. If I make any changes to the quick launch area (remove or add icons) none of the icons will work. They are still there, they just won't launch the program. If I restart the computer everything works again. At times the icons will stop responding when no change is made to the quick launch area but it happens every time a change is made. I am running windows xp media center edition sp3 and ie 8. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hello, im trying to increase the icons per row of either:-

- Quick Launch v1 by Build.A.Gadget
- App Launcher v3.3.4.5

Can it be achieved?

My aim is to have the icons of all my games in one quick launch gadget. That would mean having around 120 Icons in one quick launcg gadget bar.

Would anybody recommend a different method?
Thank you for your time and patience.

Hello Jonesie,

If you like, you could pin your "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games" folder that contains shortcuts for all your games in it as toolbar on the taskbar. You could then adjust it so it as the arrow at the top to have an expandable menu for the folder.

Another option, would be to use a free program like 7stacks for this as well.

Hope this helps,

I like the look and many of the functions of the new task bar. But, one thing I'm having trouble with is finding a quick launch icon. In Vista, the quick launch buttons were all to one side and, within their area, always in the same location so I could find, say, the Photoshop icon quickly.
Now, if my Photoshop quick launch icon is to the right of my windows explorer icon, even if I group all my explorer processes, opening just one process pushes the PS icon to the right - making it harder to locate.
And, if the QL icon is on the far right of the bar, it might get pushed to the 2nd row.

Is there something I can do to prevent this problem?

A:New taskbar in 7 moves launch icons around

Right click the bar, properties, make sure "taskbar buttons" is set to "always combine." This way, nothing moves around. All instances of any running app will be stacked with the original.

A:Quick Launch Icons, Desktop Wallpaper initally gone when offline

Do you have other machines with this same configuration that work? How does he log in when he is "offline"? Does he login to the domain using cached credentials? If he is connected to a network I can see why it wouldn't work, I'm sure it's going out and looking for his settings. I am assuming these folder redirections are being done with group policy?

Have you tried deleting the user from active directory and resetting it up? Or maybe login as a different user on the laptop and see if it acts the same way? If a different user has no problem with that laptop, then I would say it is something in his login that is hosed up. I guess that would be one way to narrow it down to the laptop (which you have reloaded so I would assume not) or with active directory.

I need to remove all the most visited pages which you get when you right click on the quick launch icon. I have cleared all the data “from the beginning of the time” several times but no use. All the pages come back after Windows is restarted.
I have also reinstalled chrome & waterfox but they all come back after a reboot.
I have tried CCLeaner and Glary Utilities as well...But none helped
