Single User Security

Q: Single User Security

This has most likely been covered before but I am wondering about admin accounts vs non admin accounts.
I understand that if you have a network you most likely would want to have an admin and a group of users.
But what if you have a single computer with only one user?
Is there any advantage or necessity to have an admin account and a user account ?
Is an admin account necessarily more secure to the outside world? as in protection from hackers, malware, viruses, etc.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

With a single pc you should create a standard user account and use it for everything. Only use the admin account when necessary.

As a single user I'm not worried about physical login.

However, I do download from the NET and have several of my own programs which access trusted servers of third parties. I never paid much attention to security as up to down figured those hacking were way ahead of those trying to stop it.

With my new build and install of Windows 7, I decided maybe now is the time.

So my questions are:

1) When accessing the NET should I be logging on to my system as a user rather than administrator?
2) Is Windows 7 Firewall adequate or better than someone else?
3) Would it be better to use a sandbox?
4) If I use a sandbox, how can I ensure that the programs or pages I download from the NET are not infected so I can copy them onto my system -- e.g. what program should I run against the download to check it for viruses)?

A:Single User Security

Very astute questions.
It is suggested that you do not log on as administrator. If you are infected by malware the damage done will be limited
Windows 7 firewall is fine. Others are going to post and disagree, since it is a matter of opinion. I trust my system to the built in fire wall.
Sandboxie is very good software. I do not use it but it will give you an extra layer of protection
You can test the safety of any download with virus total
Now here is your bonus answer. I use the free Macrium Reflect. It makes an image of my hard drive (I make an image after any big changes, ie updates. It has saved me from 3 virus. You get a virus, just replace with the image.
Good luck to you

I setting up Windows XP Professional on my new ThinkPad T60. I am the only one who will use or have access to the computer, and do not want to have to log in or have to enter my password if I haven't used the computer for a while. I set up my desktop computer with Windows XP some time ago, so I know it can be done, but have forgotten how I did it

How do I turn these settings off so that when I boot up I can start using the computer immediately?

Start, Run and type: control userpasswords2. Uncheck the box for "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer".

It would be wise to password the "Administrator" account and create a separate account for yourself.

I have one user who cannot print to one printer. I logged in as local admin, added the printer and it still would not work. I deleted all the printers and readded them. I stopped and restarted the print spooler and made sure all of the other users could print fine. I still cannot print. The print job just hangs in the que and once in a while I will get an error. I have to select a user upon startup of Windows instead of have just being prompted for a password as per usual of having one user. Same deal when locking. Any ideas?

A:Have to select user upon startup, and after locking. Single User

Hello KillerHonky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have to select a user's icon at the log on screen, then what other user's icon is displayed to select from if you only have a single user account on the computer?

....or do you mean that you have to enter both the user name and password at log on instead of just the password?

You could use the tutorial below to set Windows 7 to automatically log on to a user account at startup.

Log On Automatically at Startup

Hope this helps for now,

I'm running XP Pro with mulitiple users. I want to "turn off" Internet access for a single user while leaving free access to the other users.

I've tried a couple of NetNanny style programs, but I don't like the extra passwords that others have to use, and I don't like extra burden on system resources.

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7. He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed.

He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:\users\All Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I've done quite a bit of searching and have came up empty. Before I said it couldn't be done, I'm wondering if anyone's heard of a way to do this.

A:Win 7 single user, merging users\All Users, Default User, Public, etc?

Just curious, but why does this annoy him so much? Surely it's not that complicated a system and all of his documents etc are stored in the same place, with more or less easy to use shortcuts to these directories placed throughout Windows 7?

I currently use Vista, and have Win7 on pre-order.

My question is: can I set up Win7 as a single-user system, and not have to mess with the user access controls? I have a single user defined on my Vaio now, but I still have to deal with the multiple levels of user controls/etc. I just want the desktop/directories to show up like they used to, before I had to traverse down through the user level. For example, could I just be the administrator in Win7 and not define any other users? If I can do that, do I have to do a clean install (since I do have a single user defined now)?

A:Single User Question

Hello Jerry, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think you may have misunderstood what UAC is. Read the links in the green information box in the tutorial below for a more detailed explanation of what UAC is and what is does if you like. The tutorial below will also show you how to turn UAC off.

User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

You might also look into the built-in Adminsitrator account to see if you may be interested in using it for what you want. I would recommend to stick with your current default administrator account though for better security.

A:Single User SQL on an XP Machine?

I figured somebody would answer this by now.

If I recall, there's a single user SQL from Microsoft that's a "desktop edition"

Of course, now that I've read this, it appears that they're canning this for Vista.

In the mean time, you should be able to use the MSDE engine. Not the fastest, but if it's single user it's probably ok.

Having said that, using SQL etc has some caveats.

1] Whatever the XP system has now, it'll probably need more memory to perform satisfactory.
2] You need to protect the system and filesystems/database from being shutdown abnormally. They need to be queiesced. This means the system needs a UPS of some form. Something that will keep it up long enough to shutdown gracefully.

Is there a way so that when my son installs new software, (he seems to install about 10 new programs per day), it will ONLY populate his program list on his logon and NOT the program list for the other 3 users of the PC ? It is very frustrating

I notice that some installations ask if there will be a single or multiple users of that program, but what I would really like is to be able to be selective EVERY TIME.

If you copy all there and move to each users C:.......\Start Menu you can delete it from All users start menu folder and start to clean up your own menues
1)summary copy C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
2)paste to every users C:\Documents and Settings\Everyuser\Start Menu
3)delete whats in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

If it is possible to reconfigure WinXP (home or Pro) so there is only a single user, the "all-powerful" one, how is that done? I am the only real user, and my new machine has very little stuff on it, all replacable. I see that XP has the "Administrator" or "Owner" mode, which surely resembles what I intend to have as the sole and single subset of the OS. It also has "default user", and perhaps others, which were present when purchased. I have not created nor configured any of those modes or users.

So the basic questions are:
Is it acceptable to remove all those other "modes", leaving only the "Admin" mode?

If so, then may that mode be renamed?

Recognizing references to hacker-protection, are there other factors to consider?

A:XP - Single-user. Remove other logins?

Default User should have the administrative powers. You should be able to remove the other users, and then, if you get a welcome screen and you don't want it, you can change the way you log on under "users" in the Control Panel. Be careful not to delete all users with Admin priveleges!

I'm considering reconfiguring the installer for an application I develop. In the past, it allowed for All Users installs. If I want it to only be installed as a Single User, what user folder does best practices use as the install target? I can think of a few possibilities:

c:\Users\UserName\My Documents\
c:\Users\Program Files\

Of course I'd have to have my installer created that last one on the above list.

A:What folder should a Single User app be installed in?

While none of those really convinces me, I would think the best would be to use either %LOCALAPPDATA% or %APPDATA% environment variables as the base folder, which in particular in Windows 7 maps to c:\users\<username>\appdata\local and c:\users\<username>\appdata\roaming respectively. Creating a folder right there and dumping the program, and afterwards its data, there is not a bad option for a portable program. Alternatively, using %USERPROFILE% (c:\users\<username>) is possible.

Installing to documents folder is not a good choice because that's a frequent place for user data, and extraneous folders there may get in the way while using another programs. Some programs (including MS ones) fall into that bad practice. The other two options are simply unacceptable, because users don't normally have write permissions there, unless the installer tampers with them, which is not recommended at all for built-in system locations.

Any choice you made, just make sure to give the user a choice to change it to anything he wants, and remember to always use those environment variables, or even better API calls to retrieve those paths, don't hardcode them.

Well. you can simply never log off, just shutdown the computer and you'll never see the log on screen again. You can also change the name if you so desire. Or, if I read your post right...simply log on your name and never log off. There is a procedure to delete USERS and you can from the Control Panel. Make sure though that you are logged on as the Administrator.

When the user is in the department OU in active directory there should be restrictions on what they can change in IE etc and when I put them in a temp OU it should remove all group policy restrictions so that admin can make changes. This works for all except this one user. When I move them to the temp OU it still has all the restrictions in place. I have tried forcing gpupdate to no avail. I have the updates set for download only, and im looking for a way to make it so only I can install them and avoid all other users including those that have admin right from installing.

Some computers need the employee to be an admin, but i dont want them to see or be able to install updates. I just want my admin account to be able to do so.

I found the non-administrator notification setting and the shutdown notification option in gpedit.misc which will work for those workstations with no other admin. But was hoping i could configure my options a bit more and be selective by user.

Hello JoGirl, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes. You would just need to set it up using a "Local" account instead of a "Microsoft" account. Only with a local account can you leave the password fields blank to not have one.

The only issue with it being an administrator account without a password protection would be a security issue of everyone being able to use the account since there is no password they must type before being allowed to.

A:Single user PC why do I need Admin + Owner + Users ?

I can appreciate your frustration, Russell. The learning curve from XP to 7 can be kinda steep. One of the issues many people first have is the increased security offered by Windows 7. As you said in your post about your XP machines, "They are all standalone PCs -- stable and they let me "in"." That was one of XP's major problems ... lots of malware was able to get in as well as the authorized user(s).

When a new 7 computer is first set up, the initial account created is an administrator account so you can make required changes to the computer (like choosing language of choice, setting computer time zone, etc.) So there always has to be at least one administrator account on a 7 machine.

But to add to the confusion, this is an "unelevated" administrator account. In other words, there are some tasks (such as running a system file checker scan [sfc /scannow] from a command prompt), that cannot be done without jumping through one more hoop. If you open a command prompt in 7 (either by typing cmd in the start menu search box or using the long way start > all programs > accessories > command prompt) you have to right-click the command prompt icon and select "Run as administrator". It's just another security feature to make it more difficult for malware to get in.

A lot of people who are the only ones using the computer leave things as is ... running with that administrator account. Nothing wrong with that if you're careful and know what sites you're visiting, what email attachments you're opening, etc. But for an extra degree of security many people operate as a standard user just because it does make it more difficult for malware to get in. This tutorial goes into more detail about the various account types.

User Account Type - Change

As far as obtaining a Windows 7 installation disk, you could check out Step 4 in this tutorial (doing a repair install of Windows 7.)

Repair Install

You could download the ISO file for your version of Windows 7, save it to desktop, then burn it to a DVD. If you ever did a repair install or a clean install, just use the Product Key on your Toshiba laptop to re-activate with Microsoft. Hope some of this helps and doesn't make things even more confusing.

- Users 1 and 2 should only have access to the wired adapter (Them are admins)
- Users 3 and 4 should only have access to the wifi adapter (Them are users)

I also want that users of both groups can be logged at the same time without gaining access to the other adapter.

Thanks for the help.

I am the only person that uses my pc. If I remove my master password from firefox should there be any worry about someone getting my passwords. Or is a master password only needed when multiple people use the same physical pc?

A:[SOLVED] Do you need a master password for single pc user?

Even if you are the only user on your PC, it might be advised to use the Master Password feature for the best security. You can find info about using Master Password at the Mozilla Help Site

Generally, you want your passwords to be as secure as possible, so it might not be a good idea to store them in Firefox at all, since it may be possible for others hacking into your computer to easily find them. As an alternative, I recommend KeePass, which has much more advanced security for storing your passwords, and is easy to make entries that will auto-enter your login info to sites. Check it out at their site

A:Can I grant shared permissions to a single user from a different comp

Hello DGEccles,
Welcome to SevenForums. What you are trying to do is possible. What you have to do is pick a folder (or directory) that you want to share. In your case, this would be the C:\ drive. However, sharing your C:\ drive across the network, is very risky for many reasons. So I would not recommend this. So, lets get started. First, on your laptop, what you need to do is pick a folder you want to share. This can be your documents folder, another folder, or the C:\ drive. Next, right click the folder you want to share and click PROPERTIES. Next, navigate to the sharing tab and click on advanced sharing. Check the box that says "Share this folder". Next, click on permissions and MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ACCOUNT ON THE LAPTOP HAS FULL PERMISSION. After this, you want to click Apply and close out of all dialog boxes. Now, we move to your desktop. On your desktop, open up Windows Explorer. Navigate to Network on the left-hand side. After that click on your laptop's icon. After that a window will open asking you for credentials. INPUT THE CREDENTIALS THAT YOU SET TO HAVE FULL PERMISSION ON THE LAPTOP. After that you should see all the shared folders on the laptop including the one that you set up.

I hope this helps. (Sorry if this isn't clear I typed this fast so if you need me to re-explain it I will)

I have looked at some of the linksys / falcon etc... wireless media extenders but they only seem to extend movies / pictures / TV to another room and not the functionality of the PC through use of keyboard / monitor.

I had to reinstall W7 Pro X64 on my home PC to cure problems with sleep/hibernation.

After reinstalling, I found a single user account had been created named "DELL".

All my previous software (now stored in Windows.Old) referred to user name "Brian". So I changed the name of the DELL account to "Brian". But I then found that although the user folders are sometimes shown as "Brian", at others they are shown as "DELL".

How do I make the change of account name effective for all the relevant user folders? There is no facility to rename C:\Users\DELL; is there some other way?

Welcome Hershmab to the windows 7 forums.

The best advice I can give you is to create a userid for Brian making sure that it has the same security level as you used to have. Then log off dell and log on to brian and copy all the files to your new userid and then you can remove the Dell userid after your satisfied that everything is there.

We have installed a SmartMusic program for my son's Trumpet practice.

However, it runs on his user login, only if I grant him admin rights.

I do not want to grant him admin rights to the laptop, but cannot find any way to grant just that particular program to run as admin on his login...

Can someone help? Its a Vista Home version of Windows...

A:Admin rights for a single program to standard user

You can give this a try and hope. The run as adminstrtor feature was put there by the software and not Vista.
You can turn off the UAC
User Account Control (UAC)

Then right click on the software, probably properties, then advanced (or compatibility tab). In Compatibility or advanced tab. check run as administrator
Let me know how that works.

When you right click on the software, type in the software name in the search function by stat button, and then right click when it pops up. Do not click on any shortucuts.

For smart music rather than advanced, it might be under compatiblity tab.

If you do disable UAC, all Administrator users must exercise caution. The UAC is a warning that changes will be made to the system and not just to user account

Help with Group Policy?

I've googled and googled and read so much my head is about to explode but still haven't found what I'm looking for.

My end-goal is to change the shell for just a single user account. I poked around the registry for quite a bit after looking at some dated information on how to do it in there but couldn't find an equivilent key in Windows 7 (I believe the information was for XP). Then I discovered it can be done in the Group Policy Editor under User Configuration -> Admin Templates -> Sytem under "Custom User Interface", but this will change it for everyone it appears. My searching eventually led me here, so I decided to stop, and post for help

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

Hi All,

I hope I could find some assistance here.
We are running an exchange 2003 server, with windows 7 machines (not ideal I know).

That aside, I am getting a scripting error when opening emails from a single user. This error ONLY appears on one users computer.
So to clarify, this issue only pops up on one users computer, and only occurs when opening an email (even in preview) from another single user.

I have so far:
- Run a repair of office 2010 on the computer that displays the scripting error.
- Removed email signature from the senders computer, in case of problematic fonts (Even though to other users on the domain, this error does not occur when opening emails from this same sender.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and would be more than happy to provide more details as needed.

Thanks in advance all!!

However, when the page is printed, the jpg is printed twice, one over top of the other. Note: they are not superimposed. However, there are two images (2" x 1.5") and the perspective is "squashed."

I'm far from an expert, but what I'm trying to accomplish is I need to have one User Account that has Administrative rights to access all aspects of the computer (W 8.1 Pro) EXCEPT for two folders. My plan was to create a new Administrative user which I did, and then go to the Properties window of the folder I want to exclude, choose Securites, choose the User I want to exclude and then choose Deny for all permissions for that folder. I thought it would be simple, but unfortunately, this new User Account does not appear under Group Or User Names in the Security Window and I don't understand why. I'm sure it is a simple explanation, but I do not want to aimlessly muck around and screw the whole computer up. I just want to exclude two folders in this manner, and hope someone more knowledgeable can describe how to accomplish this.

It would basically be a waste of time to do this since that account has administrator rights. The user could just as easily change the access rights.

Hello, I am using Access 2000 and have created a database with a command button that opens up a report via a macro. I would like to know how to open up single reports instead of pushing a button that brings up every report, I've been able to open up reports that are based off of queries, queries that have paramenters that need to be inputted in order to bring up single unique records, but I would like to be able to just create a button that brings just that particular unique record-report off of that particular unique record on that form. Meaning that for a record that had just been inputted for John Doe on a form, I would like to know how to create a button on that form to pull up John Doe's single report without having to build a query that asks for a parameter. Is there anyway to do this?

A:Access-Printing a single report off of a single record from an Access database form

You will have to adapt this to your own form setup; but it's just using the Where line of the OpenReport macro action.

If on the form MyFormName you have two controls called txtFirstNm and txtLastNm, and in the query underlying the report you have two fields called FirstNm and LastNm, you would put into the Where line of the OpenReport action:

[FirstNm]=[Forms]![MyFormName]![txtFirstNm] And [LastNm]=[Forms]![MyFormName]![txtLastNm]
Hope that helps.

Hello everyone I have recently been tasked to fix some issues a government computer settings user with security Help lab is having with certain sites not displaying When normal users go to government websites the web browser gives the message quot Help with user security settings This page can't be displayed quot The web browser functions fine on all other sties - it's only of government sites that it have the Help with user security settings problem Logged in as the admin I followed the troubleshooting guide and was able to reset the security settings under the advanced tab in IE options I think it was a TLS setting This somewhat solved the problem the requested sites now display however it only works when logged into the admin account or by running IE as the admin When a normal user is logged in the problem still exist It appears that the reset of the security settings is only taking effect for the admin accounts thus not allowing the normal users to view the site I even tried logging in as the normal user and running IE as the admin which DID allow me to change the settings However the pages still don't display when running it as a normal user Running IE and and the problem persists on both I would try a different web browser but IE is required About to pull my hair out Any and all help is much appreciated

Hi all!
The end user is well aware of the need for Anti-Virus/Firewall, which is a basic "must-have" security setup on every computer. But how can the end user understand the need for more security than "just" AV/FW? – like Anti-Malware, browser security add-ons which help prevent advertisements and block malicious websites and All in One additional security tools like HitmanPro.Alert?
Please discuss!
Thank you very much in advance!

A:How can the end user understand the need for more security than "just" AV/FW?

Hi midimusicman79,Actually a lot of people use adblockers, because the ads are annoying if anything.Knowledge about antimalware has been pretty widespread recently, if you see the success of Malwarebytes.Security tools like HitmanPro.Alert are just an additional safeguard in case things go wrong. I don't use them because I don't need to.And you forgot one of the most important aspects of safe computing practices - backup. Regards,Alex

In my access database the users only have permissions to enter new data and read design. When they insert new data and click on the spell check in the toolbar it locks them out of the form to where they can not add any more information. It also will not let them change the words that spell check has picked out. The permissions for new data and read design have to stay because they can not go back in and change or delete info.

Have you given them Update and insert data permissions?

at every log in the user is always getting security log full and it is just happening to her computer is there a way to turn off the log or prevent it from getting full like that.

Thank You

A:Security Log Gets full on user computer

you can change the log size by start > run > eventvwr.msc and right clicking on properties. May just be easier to tick the radio box marked 'override as needed'.

Sounds to me like you have been scammed. Has this security company contacted ou by phone, or is it a pop up on your computer telling you to purchase and install their software ? More info please.

A:Security - User Permissions - Why don't I have access to everything?

Windows does not give access or ownership or permission to all system files to any standard user, even not to the administrator. The permissions are with TrustedInstaller. You may read about it here: What is TrustedInstaller.exe in Windows 7 | 8 or here: Windows Modules Installer - TrustedInstaller.exe - Program Information

You can take ownership of the files....

But remember that it is risky. Better you dont use it abruptly, without consulting with some advanced user in our forums.

Hi Team I do not know if this is the correct place to post this question if not admin is welcome to User Features Suites Security move it This is NOT intended to be another quot Best Security Security Suites User Features Suite quot discussion My current McAfee Security subscription is running out in a couple of months and I am considering my options Scanning the supplier's homepages you see all types of claims and functions marketed under innovative names but very little about things like logs firewall settings and user control in general Though I may get answers by the manufacturers themselves if I manage to find their email addresses I thought it perhaps easier to ask the users on the forum This will also allow others to see the answers I am looking for a product keeping good logs both for AV and firewall preferably possible to save I also want the suite to ask me for decisions but as I am far from an expert I like it to suggest an answer I do not want to make the firewall rules myself and I like to be able to turn off all the questions if I like to getting notifications instead Then I want to be able to go back and remove program entries and change the rules myself I also would like to be able to release or tighten on the protection level I am targeting the following and no else apart from my current McAfee ESET Smart SecurityAvira Premium Security SuiteNorton Internet Security Kaspersky Internet Security So what logs and controls are there in these Please do not make this a discussion of best but personal experiences of the suites are of course much welcome Thanks in advance

A:Security Suites User Features

NOD32 (eset) and Norton are by far the best. I personally use NOD32 Antivirus/Antispyware as opposed to Smart Security and Use Vista's software Firewall and a router hardware firewall.
NOD32 has password protected settings and you can backup your configruation settings. It also has a smaller footprint than Norton, thus using less resources. It is configurable to "set and forget", but does alert user to threats.

Hi im not too tech savy but i ll try to explain permissions security Lost User. on a my problem as best I can and hopefully someone can help Ok I have two users on my computer one is mine which has been running for longer and has always been the administrator I havent been on it for awhile but when Lost security permissions on a User. i went on yesterday its wasnt showing the wallpaper internet wasnt working After a bit of looking i found that all the files on this user did not show itself in the security permissions for those files only read something else not full control I reset the whole user for full control of the files but now its not saving cookies on google chrome even though chrome settings are correct and its reinstalled Also i get some other programs saying they cant save things like history files even though i reinstall these too As far as i can tell its not recognising that my account is the admin or has full security access to everything it should even though my password is still the admin password Does anyone know what might have made this happen and a way of fixing it cause constantly inputting passwords on the internet isnt fun nbsp

A:Lost security permissions on a User.

The simple way of solving this is to create another admin account, and move over your pictures, documents etc to the new account.

Using an admin password does not automatically give you full access to everything. Your access level depends on the Security settings tab in each folder/file properties.

I am trying to implement security for the database I have created.

Obviously, for the admin user, I wanted to make it so that this user can have complete control over everything (editing, deleting, and designing). How do I ensure that this is set?

I wanted to make it so that the user accounts can enter information, but that theres no way to edit that information in the tables or forms once it is entered. How can I set this level of security?

I have used the wizard, and set everything so I thought it would implement these things, however when I logged in as Secretary (limited user level) it still let me change monetary amounts in the table unit payments.

I need to know why I have an "Account Unknown" listed under group or user names.

This was found when I saw an unusual shortcut for Safari on my desktop.
It came up when I selected security tab.

Path : C:\Users\Public\Desktop\Safari.Ink

My PC is set up for Home not public as well
Thank you

If you had deleted an account, then you will find remaining fragments in the security tab. It is just saying that there used to be an account which had these rights to the program, now that account has been deleted so I don't know its name.

Hi I am not so computer savvy but learning more and trying to be more careful and security conscious In that light I have recently tried to protect my financial data data etc by using veracrypt to encrypt the folders and backing it security user protections average basic for up on cloud One additional quirk is that I have a separate user account for this stuff which is on the EDrive so i needed to redo permissions to prevent other users or even the guest account from seeing it My questions From what I read even if I delete materials and then delete the recycle bin there are all sorts of traces to be found on the pc that can be retrieved if someone wants to and stole my pc That is basically why i encrypted the financial info in case someone stole it or I suppse got into it by hacking So is there a solution to this - can these traces be deleted somehow I suppose one approach is to encrypt the basic security protections for average user entire pc but I have read horror stories of average users locking themselves out and others on this forum have recomended not to tdo that for average users So I think it best for me not to do is there anyother approach that is relatively safe to do I think I read the same issue exists for printers is that true so someone can take that and get at data that has been printed if that is the case what good is encrypting teh computer unless you solve that problem Or don't print anything with your data on it like a tax return but then why bother to have a printer I suppose this is one of those tradeoffs how much do you want to do to protect your data at what cost risk etc but curious what others suggest Lastly unrelatd but curious can a hacker figure out who i am my email address where i live etc from this forum not sure it matters just curious thanks much

Hi mianake
Everything you read is true, however, these are things that mostly happens when the Law Enforcements are involved. There's not a lot of chance that if a thief steals your computer, he'll dig into it to grab personal information out of it. While its a possibility, he'll most likely try to sell it as fast as possible to get money and dissapear. You can encrypt your whole hard drive using BitLocker (if you have a Windows edition that supports it), TrueCrypt or another encryption program. If you do, just be sure to have an emergency solution in case something happens. I'm aware of an issue with disks encrypted with PGP Desktop not being able to run a CHKDSK on them. What I suggest you to do is to create a single encrypted container (folder) where you'll store all your sensitive data. This is way safer than encrypted the whole disk. Easier to rescue an encrypted folder than a whole disk. As for the deletion part, yes, data can still be recovered after the deletion, same as documents being printed. This is part of a domain in computing called data forensics. The art of recovering and gathering data from pretty much anything you can imagine. Advanced data forensics is mostly used by Law Enforcement or specialized companies, not some random thief or burglar. While there's common people that have this knowledge, unless you are some kind of high value target, I doubt anyone would steal your stuff and go through all of your media to recover data in order to compromise you. You can make sure that the documents you delete and erased completely from your hard drives using a powerful eraser such as Eraser or wiping your hard drive free space (CCleaner can do that). As for your printer, you'll want to shut it down and disconnect it for a few minutes to empty the cache. This will not take care of the documents you printer that are still on your system however. This is quite a delicate subject to be honest but I can tell you more if you're interested.

I just bought a new computer with Windows XP Home, and dropped the drive from my old one in so I could keep all the old data, and also to have more storage.

Problem is, I can't access a couple of user folders on this old drive, as that user had a password on the old system. I can access folders for the other users that didn't have passwords. All my old photos and files though, are in the user folder I can't access.

I changed the user name and password on my new system to match the name and password associated with the user from the old system, but the system still gave me a "denied access" message.

Is there any way I can access this data on my old drive from my new system?

A:Need advice on setting up a user group security

You might want to consider letting them stick with IE10 (with 64bit tabs - if possible)
Internet Explorer 10 Provides Safer Browsing

I think that you will find that there will be few changes to IE10's user interface in the years to come than in other browsers. Keeping things the same is important. The fewer add-ons and plug-ins the better. Less to maintain.

You might consider asking the center pay for a service like OpenDNS. You can globally block (to an extent) websites from the network with that DNS service. If they don't want to pay, then local HOSTS files should work.

Make each user account a standard user... or only let them use the guest account.

Hello there I've come to this forum a few times when in need of help but finally decided to make an account So anyway I just bought this computer First with user, time issues Security Vista and it is a beauty except for the fact that all the permissions seem to be messed up The First time Vista user, issues with Security first thing I did was disable the UAC setting mostly because it annoyed me so much but I reenabled it after seeing some pages on the web recommending it Later I was moving some files in Program Files when suddenly it told First time Vista user, issues with Security me I didn't First time Vista user, issues with Security have access I'm the Admin but apparently this is a common mistake So I followed some web advice and tried setting the permissions but I don't have permission to set the permissions Actually most files were changed except for a few random folders and every file in my Virus Protection BitDefender folder So I made the actual Admin account visible not too sure what that's about and tried changing the permissions but I don't have permission on the Admin account either Basically I have a computer with random files with only read but not write enabled and even the Admin seems to have no control of them Any suggestions

A:First time Vista user, issues with Security

Sorry for the second post, but I can't seem to find the Edit button.

I've tried everything I could think of an nothing seems to let me change those few random files with locked access. Is it possible a virus is doing this?

I'm just trying to move a file into a directory in my Program Files, but it's always locked. I tried taking ownership, but ran into a problem again with those few random files.

Am I going to need to reformat my PC to get this fixed, or is there a simpler way? Reformatting would really be a pain as I just transfered all my files to this PC, and HP never even sent me a Windows CD.

Help please?

I'm just getting my father's new Dell XPS 9550 set for him. He's not a sophisticated computer user, and will close any alerts that pop up without reading them, by either closing the prompt via the X in the upper right, or whatever seems like it's a no/disallow option. So far I'm thinking of getting him set with Chrome+Adblock Plus+Ghostery, Comodo without HIPS, and WinPatrol/Privacy/AntiRansom. Appropriately configured, how functional would this be as a hands off setup? My father still works, and the worst case scenario I'm looking at preventing is one of his business contacts gets their Email hijacked and broadcasts ransomware, which he then opens.

A:Security setup that requires no user interaction?

VIPRE or Norton Security, adguard or ublock origin (please try not to put ghostery) WinPatrol and Privacy only put if he knows how to use it. You better off configuring WAR.

A:User Account Problem after Security Update

Okay, kind of getting somewhere. When I log on in Safe Mode there's a pop-up bubble on log-in that says "Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile." I've checked the Event Viewer and under the error entry for the log-on attempts it says:
"Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly.

DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified. "

Which is strange because I'm not logging in over a network or anything like that. It would seem like my user account is corrupted. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I would really rather not have to re-install Vista.
