Open Office, And MS WORD/EXCEL Questions

Q: Open Office, And MS WORD/EXCEL Questions

Hello,

Great Forum. Wonderful, knowledgeable folks.

Had to re-format HD, and seems to be working now.
But for how much longer, who knows.

On the old setup, I had MS WORD and Excel.
Many existing files of both.

I only have, if I remember right, 2 or 3 downloads allowable/available from the
Student Edition of them that I purchased a while ago.

So, I don't want to use up what is left on my present PC, as I have real doubts about it lasting much longer.

I heard about Open Office, and that it is free, and "completely" compatible with the MS equivalents. True ? Or,... ?

Is this what I want ?
Are there "better" free ones tghat would work very well with my existing WORD and Excel stuff ?
If so, suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Preferred Solution: Open Office, And MS WORD/EXCEL Questions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Open Office, And MS WORD/EXCEL Questions

Both Open office and Libre Office can open most Word/Excel documents provided they don't use any incompatible features. They will not open any encrypted documents however. It is also possible to save documents in .doc and .docx format though how compatible the .docx format is I am not sure.

I've been trying to resolve this very slow opening problem, but no success.
Tried "detect and repair", this worked but after restart or shutdown the problem came right back.
Any suggestions for a fix, hopefully short of reinstalling MS Office, would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what's going on with my pc, but when I do the following, the programs just freeze. And when I try to close them, it says "Not Responding."

MS Word & Excel:
It freezes if I try to open an existing file
If I create a new file, and click File + Print or File + Print Preview, it freezes

Open Office Writer:
It freezes any time I try to print

I sure hope I don't have some kind of virus.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

A:Excel and Word files will not open in Excel and Word

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

You cannot get Microsoft Office programs free (unless sponsored by another business, etc). Only Open Office is free.

You can, however, pay a monthly subscription for Microsoft Office 365 that gives you access to all those Microsoft Office programs on a monthly basis.

Hi,

Got a problem with Word and Excel 2007.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Other info:
Outlook 2007 works ok, no delays
Windows XP works ok
No speed issues with computer
Did not previously have Office 2003
Word/Excel documents are local, computer is not on a network
Computer is free from spyware and viruses

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Thanks

Couple of issues here.... help!

1) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word doc or excel and try to open it by a click (internet explorer) it opens of the window that comes with the computer to "buy" or ... so I have to save on the desk top, open word or excel then open the document through the software.

2) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word or excel document in (Chrome) it opens a little window which ask if I want to open, save or open/save and where to save it. If I press open another window opens and ask if I want to open it now.
How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

Thank you ahead of time!

Hi, I am having some wierd problems with my Office XP. Whenever I open files in Excel, it usually hangs. 10 minutes later it will look ok and it will let me do a couple of things but then it will hang again, and usually not recover. Sometimes it does. The cause of the hanging is intermittent, but the result is usually the same; it just sits there and I get a white screen with the "not responding" bar along the top of the window. It will effect other excel files that are open at the moment as well. It is also happening with Internet Exploder and Word, but not as much.

Anyone have any idea of what this could be? Thanks in advance.

Yo !
Have you tryed the Office repair option (Ctrl panel, add remove programs, office xp, change, repair)?
I got that problem on an XP computer, Excel was not opening at all, was asking sometimes the source files, some others do not. Also i was not able to open any attached excel file from a mail, excel crashed every time.
After the repairment, excel worked out fine.
You can try the reinstall office if the repair does not works (same path on control panel, but choose on the office options the Reinstall)

A:Office XP, Excel and Word on Vistas

An update to this- I just determined that by deleting normal.dot it will allow Word to start.
However the problem is that whenever Word, Excell, or Powerpoint try to open a file it freezes up. Word at startup loads normal.dot apperantly, so this is why word freezes immediately. But if I delete normal.dot, I can start and use word fine, except for loading. Once I close word, it creates normal.dot, and then next time I try to start it, it won't work.

What on earth could be causing office to not be able to load a saved file?
I have verified that the files being saved are legitimate, by opening them on a different computer.

If you're using office 97, according to microsoft, one possibility is that outlook is journalizing your other office documents. They say to start outlook and under tools / options / journal clear all the check boxes under 'also record files from' list. They say this can cause files to close slowly even if outlook isn't running.

Somebody help me. Every time I exit out of Word 2000 or Excel 2000 I get an "Illegal Operation" message. If I launch the program and close it again right away without opening a document or spreadsheet, it's fine. If I open a document (Word) or a spreadsheet (Excel), as soon as I close it, even if I make no changes, I get an illegal operation. select ( system restore

now you will be given the option to ( restore to a specific date or create a restore point

select (restore to a specific point

now a window will open with a calender on it

select a date that was befor you installed the (mechanic

then do the restore / now this may fix your issue and it may not

this is the issue with useing programs like this / they normally just make things worse or kill your system

First I would recommend reinstalling the Office Suite all together and downloading any updates that go with it. If that doesn't work, I would start looking at which programs you have that have built in Office Add-ons. Some of these add-on capabilities have been known to cause massive slowdowns in Office performance.

I have inserted the data on an EXCEL spreadsheet. the respondents answers to the open ended questions are often alike or fall into a perscribed catagory. to each category a code was given. there are 68 codes. if they gave answers that fell into two or more codes i would write them all in the same cell seperated by commas. I am now looking to find out how many times a code (represented by a number) was mentioned in a certain column. Is it possible to find this information? Thanks for your help.

A:Excel: using open ended questions. need help

Maybe using the Instr() function in a vba loop and counting how may times it occurs?
HAve a counter keeping tabs of the position of the first occurence and then go on from there.
There may be simpler methods but this is the first one thet occurs to me.

Not sure where to post this, but in the last month Office Word & Excel 2007 have slowed down and progressed to "not responding". Cut & paste are virtually "cut and wait 5 minutes" and maybe it will appear properly.

I have check for viruses with Malwarebytes and AVG and have used Spybot, also. I have also ran MS Diagnostics. Everything seems to be in order.

I am using Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2.

I know this problem has been ongoing for several years, but this is first time I've had to deal with it and MS Support is as usual not helpful.

Would appreciate someone else's clear mind as mine as become muddled trying to remedy the problem.

In both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, when I do a "File, Open" command, a box comes up showing the contents of the last directory I used. If I then attempt to use the drop down from this box to navigate to a new directory, it takes 65 seconds before the drop down list appears, and then another 30-40 seconds before the drop-down menu responds to my request for a new directory.

I have uninstalled and re-installed Microsoft office, and I have run the "detect and repair" option in the help menu. Nothing seems to fix the problem. I have no idea why this is happening or what Microsoft Office is doing during those 65 seconds to produce the drop down list and during the following 30-40 seconds to navigate to a requested directory in the drop down list.

I do not have this problem with other applications such as Lotus 123.

Any ideas?

I recently purchased a new computer and transferred my files from the old one. Both systems run Windows 7 with the same version of Office (2007). After the transfer, Excel files will only open when accessed from Excel - otherwise, they try to open in Word. If I click on a file and select "open with," the only option is to open with Word. Any ideas?

Try clicking on the Win7 Orb and selecting "Default Programs" and select "Associate a file type or protocol with a program". Scroll down to .xls and change the program that it opens with to Excel by highlighting it and clicking on the Change Program button in the right hand corner. You will recognise other Excel extensions in the same area which you might want to change in the same way.

I have searched various forums, including this one, so I'm not sure there is a way to resolve this problem.

Every time I start Excel or Word [Microsoft Office 2003 Pro] I have to rearrange my toolbars. When I start Excel [for example], I'll arrange my toolbars [including dragging them]. After I have them all moved where I want them, I'll use Excel and then shut the app down. When I restart Excel, the toolbars will no longer be in the places I moved them to earlier. I have to rearrange them every time!

Is there a way to lock the toolbars in MS Office 2003 Pro, specifically Excel and Word?

Thanks!

My computer did some sort of restore yesterday. I'm not sure exactly what happened. My son was looking at the computer trying to fix a problem with the audio because nothing I tried had worked. (No sound and computer wasn't giving me access to control panel.) When he gave me back the computer, everything was gone. I have the Lenovo apps, my personal files and I managed to get Windows back to what I think is an 8.1 version. This is a question about the search functions within Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Excel 2007. I want to be able to do searches that would yield both “e” and “é” in the results of a single search. Right now all I can do is two separate searches.

My OS is Windows Vista. An example of what I'm looking for is a search that would bring up "cafe" and "café". It's probably either a way to ignore accent marks or a way to define searches for "e" as if they were searches for “e or é”.

Thanks very much for your help.

Recently a friend sent out email concerning a reunion with several documents attached that were created in Open Office. Unfortunately, some recipients did not have OO and could not read the documents. I have OO and was able to save the docs in the MS Word .doc form and foreword them to several who had the problem with .odt . They had MS Word and could read the .doc formatted material.

This raises the question: What is the document format of choice? In the past we had very many word processors -- WordPerfect, Multimate, DisplayWrite etc. Now MS Word is the standard with the others pretty much history. But MS Word is not generic and neither is OO, yet, but perhaps something should be.

So what do you think?

Hi,

I have recently created an excel spreadsheet using Excel 2007 and have some worksheet protection and cell protection where necessary. It works great for Excel users, but when someone opens it using Open Office, it seems that the protection no longer exists and they have access to every cell on every worksheet, which should not be the case.

Is this a conversion issue between Excel and OO, or did I miss something when creating it in Excel?

Just started using a new workstation with Office 2010 installed by OEM. Everything worked fine for a few days, and then every time i attempt to open a Word file or Excel file i get the MS Office dialog box that states "please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office 2010". The dialog box stays visible for 30-45 seconds and then the program opens and works fine.

Ran a repair, four times, didn't fix it.

All of my research leads me to a solution of uninstalling and re-installing. I'm not buying that if everything worked fine for several days, that a bad install will make the program stop functioning properly.

I also noticed, while visiting help within outlook, that the product was still a trial version and not currently activated. I have entered the activation code numerous times with no luck.

Any suggestions? This is becoming extremely inefficient.

You got it save it as a Word Document in Open Office. If you opened it and then resaved it in Open Office it may have saved it as an Open Office file type instead of a Microsoft Word File Type. I know there is a way to make Open Office to default to saving as a Word Document. Just look thru the settings. So your first step to investigate is too see what file type OpenOffice is saving as by default.

A:Office XP Word slow to open first document

What is the brand and model of computer, and how much memory do you have?
There is a Microsoft Update for Office 2002 and XP that you should install if not already done.
First, I would run the free CCleaner, then consider others to remove congestion. Has your system been defragged? Have you run antispyware, adware, and antivirus scans? Suggest you run: Windows Defender, Adware 2.0.0.7, SpyBot 1.5.2. Or professional paid stuff such as AVG, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Nod32, etc., if for no other reason than to rule out common causes.
Sometimes the problem is exacerbated by an install of a multifunction printer. HP, Lexmark, and Epson are particularly problematic. You would need to uninstall the printer, then reboot, and remove all evidence of it with RegClean, then reboot, defrag, then reinstall the printer.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knew how to create a macro that takes each letter from a string in one cell, and puts each one into its own cell. For example, if I pasted this paragraph into cell A1 then click my macro, this happens (edit: doesn't matter what case the letters come out in; caps or as they were written):

EDIT: A macro to do the opposite would be useful too, i.e. take all the information from the seperate cells and put it into one string. Thanks.

EDIT2: The formula CONCATENATE(a1;b1;c1) etc seems to work for the opposite, except for the fact that i'm working with strings 1000 characters long, and CONCATENATE(a1:z100) or whatever doesn't work, it just returns the letter in A1. Any ideas?

I have a 32 gig flash drive on which is an MS Excel 2007 file with all my passwords, serial numbers etc.

Last week I purchased a new HDD and successfully installed Vista Home and MS Office 2007 but when I click on the Password File on the flash drive, I get a message that "Excel cannot open the file .............. .xlsx due the file format or extension being invalid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that file extension matches that of the file format.

I have tried opening it in MS Word and other similar programs but no joy.

I downloaded the MS Compatability Pack but nothing................

Any ideas on how I can get this important file to open properly using Excel?

Virtually nothing has chaged to my way of thinking except the reinstallation of Excel again!!

A:Cannot open MS Office 2007 Excel file

It doesn't help, I know, but if you manage a successful recovery, I'd suggest saving what is a crucial file in text form. "Ah, you fool!" I hear you say. "Text files can be read by anyone. Why would I keep my passwords etc. in a text file?!?" To that, my response would be ADS. Look it up.

Hi I m Excel Open error in #value! Solved: in but Office not using a Perl package WriteExcel to produce spreadsheets in XLS It works very nice though this is the situation Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office One uses workbook- gt write in Perl to write things on the spreadsheets so I write VLOOKUP B D E then with the same write I fill the range with some values also fill B with the searched value and that s Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office all It s a small KB XLS file When I open the file in Open Office-Calc like excel it shows all correctly If I open the same file in excel there is a value error where the VLOOKUP is If I F Enter at the cell where VLOOKUP is the error disappears If I send -when filling out the XLS file with workbook- gt write - VLOOKUP B amp quot quot D E the error persits as well as if i replace the column number by or value If I open and save that file in Open Office and open it in Excel the error disappears The thing is I can not rely on this because the XLS file is supposed to be produced on the fly downloaded from a web site by the user to finally be opened in either Open Office or Excel What could be the reason for the error The formula just looks the same before and after F Enter It seems of course that Excel quot feels quot some value is in the wrong format but so far no luck in putting the values in the expected format Thanks for the help Sample file is at http energiash com samples under name quot cuanti--ello xls quot nbsp

A:Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office

I tried also sending the matrix first and then the other data, ending with the formula. It did not work either.

What did worked was to switch to a similar PHP library by Johann Hanne which is based (most likely debugged also) on the John McNamara's Perl module Spreadsheet::WriteExcel (http://www.bettina-attack.de/jonny/view.php/projects/php_writeexcel/).

No "#value!" error is produced for the vlookup function.

Thanks for viewing and for best intentions in helping.

Hi there everyone,

I have a problem with both excel and word in that the files take over 20 s to open, on my work network or at home. OS - windows xp, office 2000 SR-1 professional. I run sophos av regularly and just downloaded avast av. Also ccleaner, adaware and spybot run once or twice a week. Defrag and disk check usually once a month (Is this all a bit obsessive?).... Anyway excel and word files are slow to open whether I click on the file directly or open excel or word first and then open the file. I was going to run combofix but thought I better not without expert help! Any help you can give would be much appreciated and may also prevent me going crazy! Thank you.

I'm having an issue where I can't open up the older files from years ago on my computer. The Word (Microsoft office 2007), Excel, Powerpoint, and image files that I had on my computer for years will not open up. But anything that I created recently will open up. I can download a powerpoint file and it will open up, but the powerpoints I had from 2012 will not open up. For my word documents, I got the mswrd632.wpc conversion error. I deleted the registry entry for it based on google advice. Word opens up but all the characters are in a weird format. PDF files give me an error message when trying to open it. For images, I can see the preview of the image in my pictures folder but when i click on it, it says no preview available.

A:Old Word, Excel, PDF, and images won't open up

You can download the portable version of LibreOffice. When you download the portable version and double click the exe file you can select a folder on the desktop to install to. Open LibreOffice Writer and select File > Open. Browse to your Work FIles. You can do the same for excel files using LibreOffice Calc. For the PDF files you can download the portable version of PDFXchange Viewer. Unzip to a folder and double click the exe file. Select FIle > Open and browse to your PDF file. If these fail then you files are possibly corrupted.

When I try to open Word and Excel Files, Windows ask how I should open them. I have to manually select Word and Excel from the list that shows all the different programs on the computer. Once I manually tell it to open in Word or Excel it does, but it is an inconvience. Also each file does not have a Word or Excel Logo, it is white with a little computer screen in the middle. Each file is saved as ".xls" or ".doc" files. Any help with this would be great! Thanks!

Matt

Also-any idea how to open ".RAR" files?

A:Word/Excel won't open on its own-needs to be done manually.

Slightly dependent on Windows version (which you omit to mention) but:
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to any .xls file, right click it and select "open with"
(you may need to hold shift down when right clicking).
Select "choose program" (even if Excel is in the drop down list) and then choose Excel, make sure the "always use this program" box it ticked.

Then do the same with a .doc file, but this time select Word as above.

That will set your file associations.

.rar is a compressed file, opened by a program called WinRar (not part of Windows or Office, Google would find you a download copy)

Files got corrupted at time of virus removal. also have and use Carbonite backup if that helps.

Already tried:

Open MS Excel in your system.
Click on File tab > Open. Or press Ctrl+O.
Locate the corrupted XLSX file and select it.
Click on the arrow shown beside the Open button.
Click on Open and Repair in the list.

Hi...Again

Recently my excel and word documents, when opened from a shortcut on the desktop, take up to 20 seconds to open...vary occasionally even longer.

i did a disk-defrag, as it was recommended after de-frag analysis, which seemed to help for ONE DAY!

Any suggestions why this might be happening. All these files were ok when i first started using them.

i run AVG ant0virus and AVG anti-spyware too, all seems clear.

Any help welcome

Thanks

I am running Office Home amp Student on Vista When I first started using this system Word or Excel would open very quickly approx - seconds Lately it is taking - seconds to open Items of interest - once Word Excel is open invoking subsequent documents is only - seconds Lately & Excel Gotten Open Have to Slow Word - I have GB RAM - as far as I know prefetching is in force - I do use indexing but I always have - I am not on a network - One thing that has Word & Excel Have Gotten Slow to Open Lately changed for me lately is the addition of a graphics tablet however Word Excel is slow even with the USB tablet unplugged - when I say slow I mean that the first - seconds of wait time is dead time then it begins to open Update a bit of new information -- the slow behavior occurs when I invoke Word or Excel directly from the desktop or from the Recent Items list or from within a folder However if I invoke Word or Excel from the Start Menu program list it is very fast - seconds What would make such a difference Hopefully not a red herring but worthy of further research Would appreciate any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this problem Thanks nbsp

A:Word & Excel Have Gotten Slow to Open Lately

Hello. This is a rephrase of the above post I recently made about this problem
since I still have the issue. In this post, I am distinguishing between
opening the *program* on one hand, and opening a *file* created with the
program on the other hand.

I am running Office 2007 for Home & Student under Vista.

- When I open an Office *Program* (like Word) from the Start Menu or the
Quick Start bar, it opens in a fast 1-2 seconds; opening a *File*
from the Office Button is another fast 1-2 seconds.
- However, when I open the same Word *File* from the Desktop, or from the
Recent Items list, or from a folder, it opens in a very slow 7-8 seconds;
the first 5 seconds of which time is 'dead time' before the Word window even
appears.

My recollection is that these files once opened very quickly from the
desktop and the slow down is fairly recent.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this *file* opening slowdown?

Other data:
- I have 2 GB Ram
- Other *files* open from the desktop in 1-2 seconds; the slow behavior is
only with Office generated files [e.g. Windows Movie Maker *file* opens very
quickly]
- I do use indexing, but always have.
- Have tested with and without my avast A/V and no difference.
- I am not on a network.
- One thing that has changed for me lately is the addition of a graphics
tablet; however, Word/Excel is slow even with the USB tablet unplugged.
- I have run Office Diagnostics (someone suggested) but made no difference.
- the Word files are .docx, but have found that .doc is also slow from the
desktop.
- Someone asked if I have the Office Startup Assistant (osa.exe) in place; I
have not been able to find such a file and not sure if it matters anyway.

So, if anyone has further thoughts, would appreciate, thanks!

John

EMET 5.2 is causing Word, Excel 2010 and IE 8 to crash with a "Microsoft Excel has stopped working" error when we have ASR active for these applications.

Installed apps:
EMET 5.2
MS Office 2010 32 bit.
Blue Cielo Meridian 2011 SP1.

Blue Cielo Meridian 2011 SP1 has 2 services running that integrate with MS Office 2010, these are:
AMHookTray.exe (x64)
AMHookTrayU.exe (x86)

If I end the 32 bit (AMHookTrayU.exe) application in task manager then problem does not occur.
If I disable the ASR in Word or Excel then again the issue does not occur.

I have added AMHookTray.exe, AMHookTrayU.exe to the "Modules" but I still get the error.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

But I can open files if I first open word and then go to Open and select a document from there, but not by double clicking.

Open Word, go to the Office Orb, then Resources, and then "Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

This will check out the install and do a repair if needed. You will need to the "Office cache" file on the hard drive or have the Office CD handy, if it is needed.
