Word Document find and replace, find duplicates

Q: Word Document find and replace, find duplicates

I have a document that is hundreds of pages long.

Within this document there are certain sentences, phrases that repeat and I need to find them in a practical manner.

Now I could go through manually, look for lines I suspect are repeated elsewhere and search for them, but that would take forever.

Is there any practical way to do this with Word 2010, Windows 7 Index or some other piece of software?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here's what I am trying to do. I have tried some wildcards but i really have no idea how to make this work.

DD_ZS_001 - http://websitesname.com/download1
DD_ZS_002 - http://http://websitesname.com/download2
DD_ZS_003 - http://http://websitesname.com/download3
and so on (there are many links)

I want to take out DD_ZS_001 - in front of every link to have just download link link this:
http://websitesname.com/download1

Note that strings before the link are all different so I cannot use same find and replace in word or notepad.

I don't have access to bsd or linux box. Windows only.

Any help is appreciated.

I want to create a customised 'find and replace' function that
uses a userForm similar to the word find and replace dialog box
but with the following Extras:

option radio buttons 'Left', 'Right', 'Both'
so for example if the 'left' radio button was checked and the
text to be replaced is '#' then all the text left to the '#'
including the '#' on the same line would be replaced.

Hope this is clear.

If it was in WP, I would call it a "hard return". A user has created a table in Word 233 pages long. Whenever she needed to return to a new line in the same row, she would hit the enter button instead of shift+enter. This table needs to be in Excel. Whenever I convert to Excel, Excel treats each "hard return" as a new row.

I'm trying to use find and replace to find the "hard return" and replace it with a space. I can't find how to do that anywhere! Whenever I say to find the paragraph symbol, that doesn't work. Please someone help me on this. I have an attorney tapping her foot waiting for this.

Hello-I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this. I have a mailing label merge template set up in Word. Some folks in our database only have one address line so whenever I perform a merge the second line on the label for those people is blank. I have to a find and replace to fix it each time before I can print the labels.

Does anyone know how or if there's a way to get the template to automatically find and replace so I don't have to do it each time?

Thanks for any suggestions!

A:Auto Find/Replace in a Word template

There are other fixes for this, such as altering the merge field code. For instance, this article tells you how to do it in Word 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264722

However, a quick F/R would be:

Put ^p^p in the FIND box.
Put ^p in the replace box.
Replace all.

Aloha...

I have a Word 2007 manuscript with headings styled as heading1.

I need to append <HA> to the beginning of each heading, ie:

Trapping Errors
<HA>Trapping Errors

If the line had no style, I could probably use the wildcards ^13*^13 in Find and Replace. However, since the line is a different style from the body text before and after it, the first ^13 is not found.

Any ideas how I can do this? Please?

(The ultimate goal is to run a macro to do this for each chapter of a 600+ page book.)

Windows XP + Office 2003. In Word, the Find and Replace function just stopped functioning. It goes through the motions, but reports "Word has finished searching the document. The search item was not found." --no matter what the search item was, and even if it occurs a gazillion times in the doc.

Below the window where you enter the search item, it says: "Format: Right." I have no clue what this means (opposite of Format: Left? of Format: Wrong?) or how to change it if it should be changed.

I thought the problem might be a disabled service, but I can't find any candidates in the list of services.

So I need help.

Hi, I need some help!!

This guy has a document it is 33 pages long. He goes to edit, find, he types in "asian". he cancels out after it comes up with the find. he then presses ctrl-end to go to the bottom of the document. when he hits ctrl-page up it goes to page 19 finding the word asian. It should just go 1 page at a time back up, but continues to find asian. on the scroll bar(lower right) the double arrows turn blue when he first hits -find- after typing in asian? I checked many things. any ideas? hopefully you can make me feel stupid!!

Tim: Since '97, that little ball between the upper and lower arrow now change to "find" instead of page up/page down. To change it back to page up/down, you need to hit the little ball and select the top-right icon to get it to go page by page again.

I hated it too when it first came out.

The file will be located in a folder somewhere in
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\

"\AppData" is normally hidden
"\Temporary Internet Files" is normally a hidden protected Operating System
file

You'll have to remove the checkmark (if they're hidden) in Windows Explorer:
Organize - Folder & Search Options - View

Good luck in finding it, though.

The correct way is to save the attachment first, then open it
from the saved location, if you wish to edit it.

Hi,

Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting
With Selection.Find
.Text = " 7/"

.Forward = True
.Wrap = wdFindContinue

.MatchCase = False
.MatchWholeWord = False
.MatchWildcards = False
.MatchSoundsLike = False
.MatchAllWordForms = False
End With
Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll
End Sub

But "7" is relates to month, so if there is any code for change the numeric character to specific date format as "mm".

For ex :

BUARDC 04294008295 010321 6000 7/17/2010 0000354652 000224

Hi all,
I recall being able to add the "find and replace" option to OE a while back. I think it was linked somehow to Microsoft Word or Notepad which has this option. I would like to remove (<<) from forwarded emails directly in OE rather than having to cut and paste to notepad and remove the (<<). I know my old imac's OE had an option to "clean up text" or simular which removed all the quotes. I don't see this in todays OE for XP though.

I do recall there being a tweak that added this function though.
Thanks in advance,

Hi all I want to find duplicates in a given column, selected by the user at run time, and then I want to copy the duplicates to a seperate sheet. For example:

Say I have a these columns:

1 100021
2 100031
3 100031
4 100041
5 100051
6 100071
7 100051

So the numbers 100031 and 100051 would be copied to a new sheet called duplicates.
The list of numbers can be of a varied length (between 100 and 1000 lines long).

I want to create a macro that performs this task. Could anyone provide me with any assistance?

Thanks

A:Find duplicates in excel.

Hi Greg,
You could record a macro to do that. Since you haven't mentioned which version of Excel you're using I can't tell you which menu option to choose.
In Excel 2003 you can use the Advanced filter option under the Data menu to create a list of unique numbers and then add a counter to this list to show which occur more than once.

I could put a simple macro together for you.
See if you can work it out using the advanced filter. first, and ... don't formte to mention which version of Excel you are using.

I don't know why they changed this. I hate the navigation pane you get now when you use Crtl + F instead of the Find & Replace. It's a real "pain", yes pun intended. Now I know Find & Replace is Crtl + H but after x number of years using Ctrl + F I just can't get used to switching. Plus, it's still Ctrl + F for searches on websites, etc. so it's very confusing.

So my question is, is there any way to change the keyboard shortcuts so Ctrl + F would bring up Find & Replace like before?

Hi all,

At the office we have a data base of about 12000 customers. actually it is 12000 orders. some customer purchased from us several times. We want to send our customers a letter and introduce a new item that they may want.

the actual number of customers is about 8000 and it would cost a lot of money to send out the unneeded 4000 letters. So I am trying to find a way to eliminate the duplicates.

the database has several fields:

order # -- First Name -- Last Name -- Address -- City -- Zip

I could sort the database by address and take out the duplicates 1 by 1 witch will take forever.

I'm hoping someone here knows how to set up a query to do the job.
also, please tell me in plain English how to set it up.
Thanks

A:Find duplicates in Access 2013

Hi,

You will find a tutorial here:

Queries: How to Create a Find Duplicates Query

It's difficult to provide step by step instructions without being able to see the data. One problem is that finding duplicates requires exact text matches in the fields that you want to query for duplicates.

First Name and Last Name are no good unless they're unique.

Example:

C Smith
C. Smith
Chris Smith
Chris A. Smith
C.A. Smith

They might well be the same person but a duplicate query won't pick this up.

Address field:

123 Some Road
123, Some Road
123, Some Road, Some Town

A duplicate query won't pick this up either.

Find the most unique field (probably Zip) and compare that.

I find that sometimes the best way is to copy the table into Excel and use the find duplicates add on from asap-utilities to remove duplicates rather than using the remove duplicates function that's built into Excel.

With your duplicates removed you can copy the data back into a COPY of your Access database. (A cleancopy with the data removed before you re-populate it).

ASAP Utilities for Excel - Search in the description of all the utilities of this Excel add-in

Sorry, can't give step by step instructions as I don't use MS Office on my home machine. I only use it at work!

A:iTunes unable to find song location and now have duplicates

In your preferences tab (edit -> preferences -> advanced, this is for windows), where does your iTunes folder reside? Is it set to the external drive? I assume you want it to reside in your external drive. Is the "Keep iTunes folder organzed" and "copy music to iTunes folder" boxes checked?

If the "keep iTunes folder organized is not checked, check it and close the window; iTunes will organize itself automatically, but make sure your folder is set correctly (the drive you want the music to reside in). Once its done, close iTunes and restart iTunes again. That should take care of the exclamation marks on the songs.

As for duplicates, you have to go song by song and remove them. But you need to make sure that the duplicate songs are actually duplicates in your music folder. For example, if "Song A" is listed twice, Right click on the song and go to Get Info for each song. At the bottom of the window, "Where" the song is located is listed. If 2 of the same songs exist in the folder, one track will say "Song A" and the other track will say "Song A 1." At this point when you delete the song, you can also delete the file when iTunes asks to delete the file. Now, if you click on get info on both songs and the it says "Song A" for both songs, you can delete one of the tracks from the list, but don't delete the file when iTunes asks, otherwise the song will removed. Does that make sense?

The easier way to go about this is to start from scratch, but you lose your playcounts.

I just need to know how to loop, the above of instruction "find X, select whole line, delete, find next X" and loop this.

Eg

I find this feature very useful and very powerful in Word 2003.

However I have found the following code in a document without knowing what

Can anyone explain what each bit of code does sequentially ?

That doesn't look like code, looks like plain machine garbage. Sometimes it's because of corruption or not being able to substitue a font.

I'm not sure if you can highlight the word but you can change the color of the font, shade the cell etc. Find & select, replace, format, text & fill.

Perhaps because the folder you are saving it in is not included in the Documents library.

Right click the folder containing the document(s). Select Include In Library, select Library.

Is there a program available that will allow a person to find and replace entries in the registry.

Yes, I am aware of the issues regarding making changes in the registry. However, my external hard drive failed and I need to change all entries related to the external hard drive in order to reinstall many of the programs that were on it.

Microsoft will not install anything because G:/ drive is invalid. Adobe will not install for the same reason. Many of my other programs look for the G: drive and stop installing when it is not found.

Thank you. If this is the wrong forum, please move.

I have a spreadsheet with data scattered all over. I need the email adresses that are on this spreadsheet in a list. When I do the Find and Replace and search for the @ sign, it shows me all the search results in a new window. How do I copy that list and paste it in, say, another spreadsheet ? We are talking about 1944 email adresses! I am already done with my nerves at this point and I need help badly! Thank you in advance!

A:Excel find and replace

Hi Susevienna. Welcome to the forum.

I think your best bet here would be to use Advanced filter.

Sort & Filter > Advanced

For your list range: Select your data
Criteria Range: Create heading(s), which matches that where your email addresses sit under. Multiple headings if required. Under which, put in "*@*" without the quotes.

You can select 'copy to new location' and select the new location to which you'd like your list to go.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi all... I am working with a MS Word 2000 document that has a huge batch of numbers involved. The problem is that some of the numbers have run together... e.g.:

439 441 442 443 444445 449 450 452 454 458 459 460 461 462 463 464 468 470 472 473 474 477 479480

I can identify these errors just fine by searching for ^#^#^#^#^#... five digits in a row. Is there any way of doing a replace, using the same digits but with a space entered in after the first three? Right now I'm changing it by hand and have already spent nearly three hours engaged in this tedium. Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks.... Jim

A:Find & Replace question...

Are your 3 (or erroneous 6)digit numbers in seperate cells?
If so, you could do something like this:

I entered a list of 3 digit numbers and a few 6 digit numbers in cells A1 to A10. In B1, I entered:
=IF(A1>99999, LEFT(A1,3)&" "&RIGHT(A1,3),A1)
and then copied the formula down to B10.

In other words, if the value in the cell is a 6 digit number, show the 3 characters on the left, followed by a space, followed by the 3 characters on the right.

Alternatively, you could put the LEFT and RIGHT formula in adjacent cells, so that you only have 3 digit numbers in each resulting cell:

In B1, enter:
=LEFT(A1,3)

And in C1, enter:
=IF(A1>99999,RIGHT(A1,3),"")

You can then copy the resulting data and Paste Special > Values into another worksheet or workbook.

okay here it comes. I need to find a way to find replace data on a big scale for excel 2003. I have a bunch of numbers(5m or so) that correspond to a different number. I don't know how to write a macro at all, and am currently find replacing, but this seems like it's going to take a life time.

Example:
Worksheet1
1____________ 10000
2____________ 93233
3____________ 43234

Worksheet 2 parenthesis is a cell
(1) (2) (2) (1) (3) (2)
(2) (1) (2) (3) (2) (3) etc.

I need to make worksheet 2 numbers change to represent the numbers corresponding to worksheet 1 so for every (1) that comes up it changes to 10000. I hope I explained this right. Please Help, I will continue find replacing while I hope for an answer.

A:Odd Find Replace Excel God Needed :)

The simplest and quickest way is to use built-in Excel functions.
You will need a 3rd worksheet for metadata. Not knowing the actual sheet names, I'll assume they are called

Sheet1
Sheet2
Sheet3
Also, let's say Sheet1 has the data in columns A & B, and data in Sheet2 begins at cell A1
So, in Sheet3, in cell A1 you will need this formula:

Code:
=VLOOKUP(Sheet2!A1,Sheet1!A:B,2,FALSE)
Extend the formula for as many cells as you have in Sheet2.
When ready, click on the upper left corner of Sheet3 to select all cells (i.e. the whole worksheet), press Ctrl+C, then from menu select Edit -> Paste Special -> Values.
As a result, you will have the desired numbers in Sheet3. You can then copy them to Sheet2, if you wish.

Edit:
I have assumed that 1____________ 10000 in your post means 1 in column A and 10000 in column B.
If 1____________ 10000 is in a single cell, then the above formula will not work, another one, a more complicated one will need to be used. I'll wait for you feedback before working it out.

Is there any way to search and replace a term in an entire directory?

For example, I am working on getting my organization's new website ready to go live and there are tons of text changes that I need to propogate across the site. I am in the root directory (standupnew), and it has about 80 subfolders, most of them for the various programs we have. I want to be able to click on the standupnew folder and have it search all the subfolders for "StandUP" and change it to "StandUp". Is this possible?

Hi. I am trying to format a script in Microsoft Word for Mac and I'd like to be able to find every bit of text in parentheses and replace it with the same text in italics (including the parentheses themselves). I've tried to figure it out using wildcards and such, but I keep getting error messages that I'm not doing something right.

I'd appreciate any code I could use to do that.

Thanks!

A:Mass find and replace - new to macros!

Once you have made the choice,
you can store the incorrect value in one variable and the correct one in another one.

With vba you can use the replace() function

The syntax is replace(<complete textline>,<value to search for>,<value to replace with>)

So if you are in a cell
you could say activecell.value = replace(activecell.value,"wrong","corrected")

See if this helps, may sound strange but try it on a simple line of texct and see

Hi guys,

In my Excel 2010 workbook there is a cell with the value of "90" in type of number/general. When I go to find and replace dialog box and try to find the number "90" by typing it in Find what rectangle, then I want the program looks for it in formulas (look in: Formulas). But it shows that "90" as the result! Why? I said it to look for it in Formulas not in values.

A:Excel 2010, find & replace

If I understand you correctly, the 90 is a value computed from a formula in that cell.

You should search for 90 as a value if you want to find that cell.

Searching for 90 in a formula would mean that you are searching for the number "90" somewhere within a formula, not within a cell value.

If the formula in that cell was =110-90, I would expect that a search for 90 in formulas would find that cell.

If the formula in that cell was =110-20, I would not expect that a search for 90 in formulas would find that cell. A search for 90 in values would find it.

If the formula in that cell was =110-90+70, I'd expect that cell to be found by both searching for value or searching in formulas because 90 is the value of that cell and 90 is also found in the formula.

A:Multiple Find and Replace in Excel

Hi
Try this solution. In column C enter this formula;
=REPLACE(A1,FIND(B1,A1),LEN(B1)+1,"")
and copy it down the length of the data. If the result is as you want it you can then copy the entire column and pastespecial/values into column A if you want to overwrite that data. See the attached for how the formula works.

Hi everybody, I have an issue with my AIO HP Pavilion 22-H010EL TouchSmart. The hard drive broke twice while PC was covered by warranty; now the warranty period is over, and the hard drive broke again. I suppose there's a power supply issue, in fact I see the hard drive has more boots up than I actually did; sometimes I can clearly hear a boot up noise while the PC is on (and I'm sure it's not because of the stand-by, since it happens while I'm using it). Also, just after the first hard drive replacement, it shown 7 boots up in just a hour; I suppose the SATA/Power Cable is damaged, causing the issue described, but it could be the motherboard, too.I'd like to replace the cable to see if it works, I really hope it does; thank you in advance for any reply.

I've inherited a spreadsheet with text entered in the first column. Some of the names are followed by * or # to designate cross reference info. Hello, The hard drive in my computer has ceased to properly function. Thus, i want to replace it. The thing is that I can't find the recovery file on the website or a physical recovery disk on any other website. Is the physical recovery disk still available for this computer? If not, are there any available alternatives? I understand that one such is purchasing a new OS, but that's a little too pricey, which I think doesn't justify sticking with the PC(it's 5 years old after all). So it would be preferable if the available alternatives aren't so expensive. Thank you.

Hello,

I have multiple text files (very large) containing text split by the delimiter $. Unforunately some of the data contains the dollar sign which is preventing me uploading the file into my data analysis tool. I can identify the difference between a delimiter and a standard dollar sign as the delimiter is always preceded by -} ie -}$. I cannot set this as the delimiter as it affects the way the data is read in my tool.

I need to alter the delimiter from $ to $$.

Can you help me find a way to automatically (using a .bat file) open the text files in the directory and replace ever instance of -}$ with -}$$?

Many thanks for your help

A:Batch Find and Replace on a text file

Welcome to TSG!

Do the files contain any of these characters:
"<>&^%|
If so, it would be much easier to use something like Replace Text, which can so a Search and Replace on multiple files. I haven't used it much so I can't be 100% certain it doesn't have issues with some characters though.
SwissFileKnife can do it from a command line. It does not make a copy, so backup the files first just in case.
This will replace -}$ with -}$$ in all .txt files in the C:\Test1 folder and it's subfolders as well. If you don't want to process subfolders add -nosub

Code:
sfk rep -text /[COLOR=Red]-}$[/COLOR]/[COLOR=Magenta]-}$$[/COLOR]/ -dir [COLOR=DarkRed]C:\Test1[/COLOR] -file [COLOR=Blue].txt[/COLOR] -yes
If your files don't have any of those characters, this batch file should work:

Code:
SetLocal EnableExtensions
Set _Source=C:\test1
Set _Dest=C:\Test2
If NOT Exist "%_Dest%" MD "%_Dest%"
PushD %_Source%
For /F "Tokens=1 Delims=" %%A In ('Dir /A-D /B *.txt') Do (
If Exist "%_Dest%\%%A" Del "%_Dest%\%%A"
For /F "Usebackq Tokens=1 Delims=" %%I In ("%%A") Do Call :_Sub "%%I" "%%A"
)
PopD
Goto:EOF
:_Sub
Set _tmp=%~1
>>"%_Dest%\%~2" Echo.%_tmp:-}$=-}$$%
Goto :EOF

Seems pretty straight forward to me. Use "extended" mode for searching, copy the line in that you want replaced, replace the line breaks with "\r\n", then put the text in you want it replaced with and do the same.

Hi,

I'm having some problems with the familiar feature "find/replace".

I have made a query from a web page to a sheet, foreign currencies. As it turns out the currency decimals are marked with dots, not commas and I need commas that I can do some calculations in Excel. Therefore I made a macro (because the query and the change must be automatic) to change the dots in to commas in G to K columns:

Sub ChangeDots()
Range("G:K").Replace What:=".", Replacement:=","
End Sub

As it turns out the find/replace macro doesn't work as it would when using normal shortcut selections (Ctrl+f, >replace....), but instead the macro only removes the dots, without adding the commas, Except if the number starts with a zero. =>(e.g. 1.2345 will transform into 12345 and 0.1234 to 0,1234)

Does anyone have a good explanation/solution for my problem?

Hello,

I currently have a text file with a list of email address which I need to send to our tech guy. He wants this list in a specific format as follows...

arrEmail(1)=“[email protected]”
arrEmail(2)=“[email protected]”
arrEmail(3)=“[email protected]”

Using "Find and Replace" I now have the following...

arrEmail(x)=“[email protected]”
arrEmail(x)=“[email protected]”
arrEmail(x)=“[email protected]”

All I need now is to replace the x with the consecutive numbers (there is actually over 600 in the list and this is not a one off job so would prefere not to have to manually change them)
Any ideas?
TIA

What application are you trying to run this code from? Are you trying to run this code directly in Excel or another application?
