Permanently changing default language to English UK

Q: Permanently changing default language to English UK

Hi Guys

I know this is not going to be popular, but I want UK-English.

I am in Australia, so setting the international formats does not work for us as we have $ dollars and metric.

Every day I open up a new word document (WORD 2010), I have to set the proofing language back to UK-English as default. But Word keeps defaulting it back to US-English.

Can anyone give me the permanent fix. Sorry to all the Americans and Australians, but I want UK-English.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What is your keyboard set to?

BTW this is not related but why if you are in Australia does this Profile show the US Tme Zone?

Hi, I need to know one thing. I have been trying to remove US English language from Windows 7, but I am unable to do so. When I use this path, Region and Language / Keyboards and Languages, and then tap on Install / uninstall languages, there's no option to select and remove US English.
I have removed it from the Text services and Input languages settings, but it keeps appearing on the language bar, which is at very least irritating
Is there any way I can permanently remove the US English language from the OS? I would very much appreciate a response in this matter.

Have a look at the attached screen-shot, if it's of any help!

A:How to permanently remove US English language from Win 7?

It might be because Microsoft is a US company and the de facto language of Windows is US English.

Not that that solves your problem, but that might be an explanation as to why you can't get rid of it.

i need to change the language on my current windows from polish to english. i'v tried doing it in control panel but that doesn't seem to work. pls help!!

A:changing the language from polish to english

Hi and welcome to TSF

You can only change some bits of XP into English via the Regional and Language options control panel.

If you want everything in English, then you must buy an English version of Windows XP, you cannot change Polish version into English as there are no English components included.

Title says all, I'm just interested (now I saw on nVidia drivers download Language - English (US) , English (EN)). I want to know when I have English ISO, is it in US english or UK one? Hope you understand me.

A:English language stands by default for US or UK?

You mentioned nVidia but are you actually asking about the Win8.1 installation? All of the Windows installations I've done from the CD [WinXP and earlier] or DVD [Win7 and later] had a screen early in the install that prompted to choose a language. Apparently Windows includes many languages as it's unknown which country it will be used in and the correct one has to be chosen. I think part of the Win7 DVD requirement was for the Anytime Upgrade feature.

Honestly, I'm a bit irritated because not all internet users here are Arabs- there are lots of foreigners like me also. I just want to set all my browsers to start in English.. even facebook and other programs. Can you help me tweak this out? I tried preferences option already- it works for a limited time. This may be a bit hard to do, since everything is in Italian, so I've included a few screenshots:

Windows Vista MUIs provide a translated version of most of the user interface. MUIs require a license to be used and are only available with Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Enterprise.

1. Go to the Microsoft Local Language" website (Unlimited Potential - Programs / Local Language Program) , and download the language you want, which in this case would be English.

2. Open "Control Panel"

3. Under "Clock, Language, and Region", click "Change display language":

4. In the "Regional and Language Options" window, click "Install/uninstall languages..." (you will need to respond to a UAC prompt):

6. Click "Remove Languages":

7. If you have both English AND Italian listed, select Italian, then click Next. If you only have Italian listed, click the Back button then proced to step 8 below.

8. Click "Install Languages":

9. Browse for the folder containing the language pack you downloaded in 1)

I hope that helped somewhat

A:Changing the default input language

Hi Akimatsu,

I also use MS Office 2003 with Windows XP (although I think it works similarly with other Windows operating systems, like 2000).

I changed my default setting for MS Office 2003 default language from English U.S. to English Canadian by doing the following:

On the Windows Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings.

Click the Enabled Languages tab.

In the "Choose the language that defines default behavior in Microsoft Office applications" box, select the language you want, (in this case, English) and then click OK. Make sure you also add any other languages you want enabled as secondary and supported into the right side box on your screen.

If you then want to type a Word document for example in Chinese, you can do this through the Word document itself by following instructions in the Word help section, such as the following (which directs you to MS Office Online):

About creating a Traditional Chinese document

To work with Traditional Chinese text in documents, make sure you do the following:

Set up system support for Traditional Chinese.

Enable Traditional Chinese for editing in Microsoft Office.

Obtain a Traditional Chinese Input Method Editor (IME) so that you can type Traditional Chinese text.

Microsoft Word has built-in features that help you work with Traditional Chinese text, such as support for vertical text editing and the fonts MingLiU and Arial Unicode MS, as well as SimSun for both Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. For additional functionality, you can purchase Microsoft Proofing Tools.

Learn about other Word features for Traditional Chinese.
I'm not sure if this will help you or not, but I'm sure there's a workaround for this, especially if most of your use of MS Office 2003 is performed in English.

Best of luck to you! I'm looking forward to hearing from other users who may have resolved similar problems.

Best regards,

Here is what I have found. Both of these websites claim to either have the LIP or an easy way to convert without VISTA Ultimum. Can someone verify for me that these sites are valid and it will not place a virus on my system.

When I am typing, sometimes I get the character ? instead of ?. After doing some research, all you need to do is select the English(US) instead of English(Can) in the language bar. Apparently, it seems that this language setting only effects the individual software instead of all the software installed on your computer. So for example, if I changed this language setting in Word, this setting will not roll over to Notepad or Chrome or even the OS.

I am wondering if there is a way to permanently save the English(US) setting so it will apply to all of my software?

A:Change Language Permanently

If you go to Regional and Language Settings in the Control Panel, you should be able to set it to English (United States) so that all software defaults to this. Additionally, you can go to the "Keyboards and Languages" tab and click on "Change Keyboards" to ensure that English (US) is installed. If not, you can add it.

Hello Everyone,
As I travel to the north on regular occasions, I bought a Lenovo G585 laptop in Spain, where I live. It had W.7.Home Premium installed in Spanish.
I have now upgraded it with the free installation of W.10.
As with all things downloaded in Spain, there is rarely a choice to obtain the download in English.
After the download I found a way to change the language into English.
That done, the keyboard no longer responded correctly!
I am also not able to use the search facility Cortana as it is unavailable in Spain.
Is there any way that I can have the W10 OS language in English AND make the keyboard respond to its designed (Spanish) keys?

(I am writing this on my desktop which has W7 Ultimate in English installed!)

Thanks in advance for any advice,

A:Problem with setting English language

Yes you can and it is the same as in 7 if I remember correctly.

Search for Language in Control Panel. Click on Options in the English Language.

On Input Method click on Add Input Method and scroll down the list until you find Spanish. Then remove English.

This only affects your keyboard - no other regional or language settings are affected.

For Cortana to work you need your language, region and speech have to be the same - it doesn't care about the keyboard. If your language is US English you'll need to make sure you set your region to US as well. As region affects things like search results and news I leave mine where I am and don't use Cortana but it is up to you - I've just not found a use for it yet.

A:Symbols showing instead of English language

Try restoring a backup the program might have made before "fixing" your computer.

You should definitely avoid Registry Cleaners, Boosters, Optimizers, TuneUp Utilities... This type of software will do a lot more harm than good. Most members coming here with WEIRD symptoms had their computer messed up by malware and/or registry cleaners. There have been reports from members saying registry cleaners had fixed a specific problem with their computer. Although it might be possible in some cases, legitimate files still in use will be deleted in the process, crippling some programs and Windows applications beyond repair.

Keep in mind that they will always find "errors" to fix, even on a fresh Windows install! In itself, this should be enough to convince non-believers...

I'm not sure it'll "upgrade" the language but the only versions that are available for the MLS (Multi Language Support) is the Ultimate and Enterprise versions, have a look at the SKU chart below.

Does anyone know if this is possible? To be clear I am not talking about display language or input language as there are many posts about this.

Currently my settings are as I want them:

Display language : English
Input language : English (United States) - French
Format : English (United Kingdom)
Location : France

I did a clean install from USB (upgrade from OEM Win 7 Ultimate). My language was reset to French - probably as the original Win 7 machine was bought in France. I have changed the input/display to English but whenever I install software (today GoogleDrive, Dropbox, Lenovo drivers) the language picked up is the system language.

Is it possible to change this?

I have it set up with English display language and Norwegian for keyboard. After a restart its reverted back to English keyboard and I have to manually change it.

I have turned off sync between other win 8 machines, since that initially messed things up, but it still does this.

In Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language English layout with Norwegian keyboard is set at first, and region is set to Norway.

This is a new problem when I type in Spanish. I do not think I had this issue before. When I type words in Spanish such as "mejor" which means better, it is automatically changed to "major" which of course means something entirely different. This happens with many words, another example is "haciendo" (which is a tense of the verb to be); it is changed to "hacienda" which is something like a type of house and so on. Most of the words are underlined in red. I already tried adding the language bar for Spanish, but all that does is change the keyboard as well as the names of the folders from English to Spanish, which is not what I want. I want to write properly in English without going back to check word by word. Can anyone help???Thanks, Ana

A:Language Issues (Spanish/English)

Hi Ana, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The issue you describe is not a Windows issue. It simply means that your word processor is using English spell check. Your examples confirm it; mejor is not English where as major is, and again haciendo is not English but hacienda is, so in both cases the spell check "thinks" you have made a typo and auto-corrects it.

Not knowing which word processor you are using, please consult the manual and / or help files of the word processor to find out how to turn Spanish spell check and dictionary on.

This Microsoft page tells you how to change proof reading language on Word:

If this happens when typing on browser, for instance on web email client composing messages, consult the help files of that browser to find out how to add Spanish spell check and dictionary.

I've Googled this problem but am getting conflicting views on how to solve this problem. I bought a laptop in Paraguay, with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed. I thought this would be handy and it was cheap as chips so bought it. Little did I know changing the language from Spanish to English would be such a chore. Is there a simple trick I'm missing?

I can get by but it would be so much easier to have it all in English. For instance, I just tried to put my camera's SD card in to the slot and it came up with an error message that I couldn't even read!

I don't have the Windows 7 installation disks...

Thanks in advance.

A:Need to change language from Spanish to English

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Your easiest way round your problem would be a Windows Anytime Upgrade from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 7 Ultimate, which would give you access to 34 language packs via Windows Updates.

Obviously, you'll need to choose your region before you make your purchase, but all it involves is buying a new product key, which is then e-mailed to you.

Then it's Start>All Programs>Windows Anytime Upgrade and follow the instructions to enter your new product key.

Wait half-an-hour or so and it's job done.

Failing to repair my old Dell, I bought a Lenova laptop with XP Professional here in China. Unfortunately, the only guaranteed method for getting Windows in English is to buy an original CD, which is 1,900 RMB (187 GBP). That's far too expensive for me. However a friend says he may be able to install Windows 7 Ultimate, to which a language packed can be added that allows the language to be English.

But he hasn't tried it before and isn't sure it will work. Does anyone know about this?

A:English-Language Windows in China?

Windows 7 costs just as much as WinXP, and you would also need a license key.

There are other operating systems that are "free", such as Linux, which may be a better option if you are looking to save money.

Try this....

Go Start > Control Panel > Classic View > Regional Settings and Language > you should be able to alter the language to English [Australia: UK: US etc.].

Once you have completed the adjustments, you might have to reboot the computer for them to take effect.

Thank you for your assistance!

A:Switch Windows XP language from French to English

The problem is that there is no ?switch? to change the language. You can change the keyboard layout but not the language of Windwos itself. In such cases you have to make a new and clean installation of Windows using installation disk.

I don?t know what notebook you have exactly but all drivers and tools for your Toshiba notebook you can find on Toshiba homepage.

By the way: If you install XP, I would recommend Service Pack 3. It contains important security updates.

There are two things, language and keyboard, that I can choose the language for. And the physical keyboard is Japanese (qwerty with additional buttons).
Also can I add more languages later on? If I plan to add one more language which keyboard is best for initial set up?

Would be grateful for any tips, its a first time I bought laptop outside of Europe.

A:choosing a language for a new laptop English and Japanese

Be sure to make your Recovery Disks and preserve the Recovery partition if you reinstall so that you can revert to the state you received the computer and hopefully make these Setup choices again if needed in the future.

Otherwise languages are only interchangeable when you have Ultimate which provides all of the language packs via optional Windows Updates.

However reinstall with another language is sometimes possible depending upon the region of your license even though the license is language-specific. The choices you have now should also be available by finding an installer for that language to clean reinstall, then activate with the Product Key on COA sticker. However you may have to try it to find out for sure, so be sure to preserve your factory Recovery options and and Win7 backup image of your install after setup.

Hi everyone!

While current language for non-unicode programs is in English, the Arabic texts are encryption and aren't shown properly in any text files.

However, when I changed the non-unicode programs to "Arabic, the texts are shown properly in all Arabic texts.

The most strange is that VGA driver changes to Arabic when I change current language for non-unicode programs to Arabic.

But it is still English when current language for non-unicode programs is English.

I was excepting that VGA(CATYLAST program) was in Arabic when I the driver software was in Arabic.

However, this is not true, and the evidence is that the language changes to Arabic when current language for non-unicode programs to Arabic, and to English when current language for non-unicode programs to English

What is the relationship between current language for non-unicode programs and VGA program?
I think it should still have been shown in English whatever current language for non-unicode programs to English/Arabic?

I am editing and revising documents that need to be in English (Australian).
I am in Australia, working for an Australian company that has set the default language set accordingly by default:

The Control Panel settings for language and keyboard seem correct (English-Australian and Us keyboard):

There was a thread on this forum with useful advice related to this topic here:

The conclusion from Kari, who seemed to have the most in depth knowledge (and performed the most testing) was that the Windows input language overrides the Office settings (not much use for the Office setting!?).

That said, it would seem that my system is in compliance with the best advice from that thread. However,
I keep getting the automatic spell check flagging words as misspelled according to the US dictionary.

I have selected the entire document (Ctrl-a) and set the proofing language to English(Australian) several times, but the problem keeps recurring.

Any ideas why?

A:Word 2010 Proofing language keeps reverting to English (US)

I may have solved my own problem. I went back to take a snapshot of the proofing language setting:

Then I realised I have probably just been selecting OK instead of "Set as Default" !

If I do that:

the message would seem to suggest that the fault may be with my NORMAL template,
and that it will be fixed if I click Yes.

So, I've done that, I will see if the problem goes away ....

That said, it seems unlikely this is the problem. Why would the current document revert to the NORMAL template settings for content revised/added? Wouldn't it revert to the Office (or apparently maybe Windows) default?

Or, if there is a setting associated with the NORMAL template, is this setting carried forward into the document when it is created? This seems possible, and more plausible that that the document would keep reverting to a language from the NORMAL template .... but if so, where is that setting adjusted?

When I had XP it would remember where I was typing in Japanese and stick with the Japanese writing until I told it to change.

So I can type in Japanese but every other sentence I have to put the settings back to continue.

Changing Japanese to default language does nothing.

Thanks for your time!

Hi, I am having a problem with installing the English language pack on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. It is now in Polish since I am polish and the edition I have is called Windows 7 Ingresso which is basicaly a cut down version of Win7 with some great programs preinstaled and is also really fast. The thing is I like doing youtube tutorials to some programs and things like that, but can't because Windows is in Polish...

I tried installing the English Language Pack through Windows Updates but it gives me an error code 800736B3

Anyone got any ideas?

Any help much appriciated thanks

It depends on what version of Windows you are using.. Language packs can only be used on Windows Ultimate, or Windows Enterprise versions....
