I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I scaned it for viruses/malware etc... I can view all the files but cant delete them and I wanted to clear them off so I can use it for another purpose... can anyone help please...

Not too much info on the card, as it isn't mine. But it is a 16 gig Samsung Class 2 MicroSDHC card. Previously used in an AT&T Samsung Android phone (has big touch screen... don't know model).

Anyway, card has somehow become write protected. Obviously, since it is a MicroSD, there is no lock switch. Data can be read from the card, but nothing can be written to it nor can it be formatted, either from Windows, the Panasonic SD Formatter, or my other Samsung phone (Samsung Reality). How on Earth does this happen??? Can anyone give insight on how to fix it?

A:MicroSD is write protected

I have no idea how this has happened but, reading through a few other forum threads it seems the trick is to cover the slot on the side of the card so when it goes into the adapter the tab in the adapter cannot drop into the slot.

Another suggestion I saw was to put the card in a digital camera and use that to format the card.

I did get this information from other peoples suggestions so sorry if it does not apply to your reader or card.

Hey,

I don't know what read means. I transferred some file to and from a USB 3 thumb drive. Files transferred much faster from the thumb drive to a hard disk. Looking at the image it seems that read means transfer to the hard drive but that doesn't make sense to me because in my thought process the thumb drive isn't reading it's writing to hard drive. Could someone explain to me what I am failing to understand? Thanks

A:Diskmark read/write

The data (on the thumb drive) has to be read by the OS. The OS is writing what it read from the thumb drive to the hard drive.

I need a smartphone that I can put a document with addresses and phone numbers on and the smartphone will hyperlink the number straight from the document.

I currently use iPhone 3gs and a app (Documents by Savy Soda) and it works: wifi doc to phone; open app; open doc; touch phone number and WaLa! it calls the number

I tried Windows phone thinking with Word and Excel on it, the phone would call from the document. NOT! I sent a file to a friend who has and Android phone and it won't do it either.

I'm not fond of Apple, so my question is:

IS THERE ANY PHONE OUT THERE THAT WILL HYPERLINK PHONE NUMBERS FROM A DOCUMENT?

Moderator note: drgerry, no need to shout.

Stick with the iPhone then. But I know with Gmail if you open a doc with cell number on it will launch Android phone apk. I haven't tried that with Window smartphone with Gmail.

Depends on how the drive has been write protected. Does the whole drive appear to be encrypted/write protected or has each file been individually encrypted/write protected?

If the drive has been encrypted, TechSpot has regulations against helping anyone circumvent encryption. Reason for this, is we have no way to know for sure you are the true owner of the device. Write protection however is a simple switch in file properties that can be toggled.

Hi there guys First off apologies for posting a topic which write protection drive Flash going through the archives seems to appear every minutes but I can t seem to find a solution for this method which has been annoying me pretty much constantly for about months now I have a Kingston DataTraveler Gb Flash Drive operating Windows On this drive there is no physical write protection yet every piece of software I try to use to interact with the Flash drive write protection device tells me that the drive is write protected I ve tried the regedit method CHKDSK booting in safe mode some program called repair v which even refused to pick up my drive and trying on numerous different systems After I ve connected the drive to the system and Flash drive write protection try to format the drive through Windows the first attempt at a format throws up the error message quot Windows was unable to complete the format quot whereas subsequent attempts then say that quot The disk is write protected quot From what I can recall this problem first started when data was being transferred to it and the stick became dislodged Ever since I ve been unable to delete the partially transferred files from the stick nor copy any new ones across I can read and open the files however so it appears that data integrity isn t the issue here Has anyone got absolutely any ideas on how to solve this before I end up throwing this thing under a train nbsp

A:Flash drive write protection

"this problem first started when data was being transferred to it, and the stick became dislodged"...

This mistake probably damaged the RAM chip inside the flash drive. Flash drives are fine for temporary storage but if the files are that important, you should back them up to CD, DVD or Blu-Ray discs and put the discs away in a safe place

I was having some trouble with my graphics card and borrowed one to test from a friend, the thing is after i checked the Windows Indexing numbers i was surprised to see the 'smaller memory' card had a higher score and wanted to know how the scores are marked on the graphics side.

My card is a ASUS EAH 4350 1Gb Silent card and had a Graphics score of 3.8 and a Gaming Graphics score of 5.8

Friends card is nVidia Geforce 8600 GT 256MB and has a Graphics score of 5.9 and a Gaming Graphics score of 6.4

I thought mine having larger memory would of been a higher score but apparently not?

I have a Lite-On DVDRW SOHW 1633S and a Lite-On DVD SOHD-167T. I have been trying to burn music from Nero Express and neither will write to a disk. I used the Microsoft Fixit diagnostic tool from the website but both instances tell me the drives are not capable of writing. Could both drives be defective or could it be something in the configuration, or maybe I'm not using the right diaks. I am using CD-RW disks. Any help is appreciated.

A:DVD R/RW cannot write

If both drives WERE write drives i would say there was a software/config error but the Lite-On DVD SOHD-167T isnt a writing drive for CD's or DVD's.

With this in mind this coudl point to your other drive being at fault. Before purchasing a drive i would recomment checking all the cables conencting the drive to the mobo and uninstalling and reinstalling the NERO software. While these are unlikely to be at fault its better to be safe than sorry.

You could try using other discs but again if the Microsoft tool is saying its not a burning drive it sounds like that maybe the drive is not working correctly. If im not mistaken i believe its an older drive as opposed to a newer one. try using a diff burning drive you know works either a spare you may have or a mates in your PC and see if that helps.

Hope this helps

Hope I am in the correct forum

I have an old (2005) Dell Lattitude 110L
It's been awhile since I messed with it but I believe that the original problem was a virus.
Somewhere along the line someone went into MSCONFIG and checked the safeboot button...... time passes,,,, forgot that it had been set to that and attempted to completely reformat the pc. It got stuck in a seemingly eternal loop,
"windows cannot proceed Setup in safe mode" And would just continue to reboot itself. Yea, 2 years later I reset the RAM. Now I get a black DOS screen with this error code

memory write/read failure at 1F7E000C, read7C917E91 expecting 7E917E91

Beyond that, you might try reseating the RAM modules. That's an old computer, they might have picked up a little corrosion.

If you can find a memory map of the motherboard, it would be interesting to note if that fault is a hardware or RAM address. Don't ask me, I don't speak "hex".

I'm only a little bit computer literate. I've never really put forth any time to studying these things. I pretty much learn by troubleshooting problems as they appear. Anyway...

I was having computer issues, ran a hdd diagnostic, reallocated sector count below theshold. From what I gather that means the hdd is pretty much done for. No biggie, I'll get a new HDD. But before I pack the old one into a box, I want to write zeros through the drive. I've got everything off it I need and don't want to risk somebody else getting something off it I don't want them having.

I'm using WD's diagnostic tool and it's estimating that it will take 43 hours to do a full erase. I did a quick erase and it took less than 10 minutes. Is that normal?

A:Should it take 2 days to write zeros to HDD?

Take the HDD apart, that's always fun to do. When your done messing with take a hammer to the platter

I have a HP laptop keyboard that isn't responding correctly. It displays a "1q 2w 3e 4r 7u 8i 9o 0p" on the screen when the respective letter is typed. I undestand how the "Fn" key and the "Num Lock" key works but this is not the issue. Any advice to remedy this would be appreciated. I've had this laptop for 18 months and it just started doing this. I can't seem to find anyone on the internet that is having the exact same problem. They only have what appears to be a similar issue but not this exact number letter combination.

I ordered an nvidia fx5200 and it came with some funky dms-59 output connector...tried to check the nvidia site and they say "they don't manufacture cards, only chips" which seems totally wrong, as my card says "nvidia" right on it

anyway, I need a vga connection - which everything I could find said the fx5200 has - but this card only has the dms-59 connector (which seems very rare)

anyone know of a listing of fx5200 model numbers, so you know what to order and what you will get?...I ordered this from ascendtech (which may be part of the problem)

tia

A:Are there model numbers for the fx5200 cards?

They make the GPU but not the actual card. Are you sure that isn't a DVI connector? Did your card come in a retail box? A DVI to VGA adapter usually comes with it but if not, you can buy them separately.

Alright, I'm at my wits end with this. There is absolutely no switch for write protection on my PNY 4gig flash drive, but there are certain files that are damaged, and I want to do a reformat. Can't do this because it says the disk is write protected. Tried the low level format and HP format programs suggested, but neither work. HP says the disk is formatted, and the other gets low level format errors and erases nothing.

Also tried the registry edit solution, but could not find the Storage Device Policies string. Please help!

You may get lucky, but to save time, toss that drive, and go with something that has not been damaged. 4 GB flash drives are only $4 to $6.95 now days.

A:Flash Drive Write-Protected Problem

Hi!

Have you used the flash drive before, without problems? Does it contain any important information?

1. First, check if it has a switch to activate/deactivate write protection.
2. You could try to do a low-level format (WARNING: This will erase any information on your flash-drive). There are many tools for this, just google, or try HDD Low Level Format Tool.
Good luck

Hi there, I'm trying to fix a problem with my sisters laptop, she has a Dell Inspiron 6400 and is running XP. The problem is that she can't write data to DVD's in windows, she keeps getting a 'windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file, what would you like windows to do?'. I can then retry or cancel.

The strange part is that she can write to cd's fine and also write to a dvd using third party burning software, just not in windows. Also when you open the disc in explorer it doesn't open the usual writable folder, just merely opens the disc.

If anyone can help, we would be much obliged as she is going back to uni soon.

Regards,

Will

A:Memorex flash drive write protected. How do I remove it?

6 days of waiting & counting?

As risky and distasteful as it sounds, those flash drives are tied down with an OS, and can be freed by following the "uninstall" link when launched from the OS running on the fllash drive.

U3 Lauchpad was one such company. Uninstalling without the flash drive present would have violated the license agreement & forever would leave the flash drive boogered.

I own a Fantom Drives External Terabyte HD External Failed Delayed Write on USB and have been using it without a hitch for about or so months now Just recently it has been behaving strangely The drive sometimes randomly disconnects Afterwards more often than not it will reconnect You can hear the default Windows XP sounds for a disconnecting reconnecting USB device Along with this I notice a bubbled message coming from my taskbar warning me of a quot Delayed Write Failed quot in the drive It claims that it could not finish saving the data quot H Mft quot or quot H Extend quot Other times it will actually report data on the drive itself like MP files or photos as unable External HD Delayed Write Failed to be saved due to a corrupt device or network connection All this happens more frequently when I try to scan the drive For example if I try to load up the data from the drive into Windows Media Player LIbrary the quot Delayed Write Failed quot happens frequently with disconnects and reconnects of the drive itself I tried a few things to troubleshoot the problem First I tried powering down the drive and starting it back up This only seemed to work if the drive did not reconnect after it disconnected I also tried using Firewire instead of USB did not help I also tried using a different USB cable also did not help I tried running Chkdsk I tried using the traditional method of going to the properties of the Drive and selecting Tools and then Error-checking I selected both options but it would always tell me that the drive was being used by Windows and that I had to restart to perform a drive scan However every time I d reboot the scan would not commence upon startup I tried running Chkdsk in SafeMode In SafeMode the scan would commence immediately but would eventually say that the scan could not be completed I tried running the scan a few times after and it just reported the same error I then took the drive and tried it on another PC It works fine the data seems to be intact just as it was on My PC I then tried to run Chkdsk in the command prompt with the parameters f x r The scan would get to Phase and then hang on for several minutes Then after getting to a certain point it corrects an error in an index and then stops After this I d run the scan again and it would do the same thing stopping after seemingly correcting an error in an index sometimes two I have yet to see Chkdsk finish or even get to the point of scanning for bad sectors The data seems fine would this be a big indicator of a corrupting drive Or is it just that the indexes are screwed Purhaps backing up the data and reformatting the drive would help Are there any diagnostics I can find that can thoroughly scan my drive without it hanging up and stopping on each and every index error Fantom Drives doesn t seem to have any such diagnostic tools on their website I d appeciate any help you can give Thanks nbsp

A:External HD Delayed Write Failed

Is the drive supplied with its own external power source? If so, it sounds like the drive is losing power and turning itself off and on, which would explain the repeated disconnects/reconnects.

To see if the drive itself is functional, understand that all USB drives are going to be plain jane IDE or SATA drives inside the enclosure. You can remove the drive from the enclosure and plug it directly into a machine to see how the drive behaves there.

I'd suggest checking out the power supply as well as the internal power connection to see if it is loose, cracked, et cetera.

Cannot format the flash drives, even in Safe mode, or using Disk management, or command mode. However, they work properly on other computers. As this is my premiere speech, I shall try to be brief:

My area of expertise in computers is concentrated in the keyboard. I am only a bare novice or advanced newbie on hardware. Recently, I added an IDE PCI controller card and second hard drive, as I have lots of data I want to store. Works Fine!!!

However, my DVD drive has gone wonky. I can read DVDs, I can read CDs, but I can't write DVDs, and I want to back up my system!

To try to answer questions which might be asked, its a generic clone with 512 MB of memory (working on that) and when I look at the system, for the hard drive it says, "HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H455N SCSI CdRom Device". It says LG on the outside.

Can someone help me figure this out?

we are trying to do a rather off-the-wall thing. the big picture: we have classified data that we want to encrypt on all writable partitions on our hard drive(s). we need to store the encryption/decryption "keys" - two redundant 32 byte entries - for this data external to these drives. one place we thought of was in bios. these keys will be used for every read/write from/to the hard drives, so we would like them be be accessible in the lower part of ram like all other bios data is after bootup (if possible). the keys may need to be changed sometimes at boot-up by a third party application and NOT by entering the standard bios menus, which may be the trickiest part. is any of this at all possible?
thanks!
t.

A:How does one write to (and read from) bios without using typical bios menus?

Sure it is, but why do it the hard way? (You would have to rewrite the operating system kernel/drivers to do this unless you are using DOS or something)

There are industry standard solutions like TPM chips on motherboards, smart cards, security tokens, pinpads, hardware hard drive encryption devices..

I have a 1gb flash disk and i cannot open it. I am able to use it before and i don't know what happened why it stopped working. Whenever i double click it from my computer, an error message appears saying that there is an i/o device error. I right-clicked it and tried formatting but it doesn't work. It says that the drive is write protected. I also tried reformatting it using the disk management in control panel but it also doesn't work. It also says that the drive is write protected. I don't need to recover my files, i just want to be able to use my flash disk again. Any solution?

Hello all,

I seriously need some help. I have this USB stick that is write-protected somehow. There is no switch on the stick and I can't format it, the system displays the message "the disk is write-protected". I went to disk management and tried the same thing, but it simply won't work.

Any suggestions? I am out of time and patience.

A:Format a write-protected USB drive

Write protection means exactly that - you cannot alter the contents of the drive, including formatting it.

Unless there is some software that came with the stick that lets you lock/unlock the thing, there is nothing you can do.

The Techspot FAQ

If you could take a minute to fill in some of your profile information that would be helpful to all members of the forum
Knowing someone's location in the world can be extremely helpful, even if you just put a country.

Also remember to post any problems or questions that you have in the appropriate forums

With regards to your question, the "800" refers to the clock speed of the ram (in MHz). As long as your motherboard is compatible with it then i think you'll be ok.

The rest of your hardware sounds good, you'll need more than a 250W psu though.

Get a new flash drive? You can try some of the stuff here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic45834.html but there's a good chance that the drive has simply gone bad.

OMG, I have so many questions that are killing me! and mostly they are related to mp3's! Please answer these if you have enough knowledge!

1. If I download music (by payment) on the internet, can I choose which format/bitrate I want it in? And can I choose lossless .wav format? I don't buy music online.

2. What are these numbers followed by the word Hash? What are these things?
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/8285/hashmq4.jpg

3. What are these things - when I check the properties of an mp3 in it's comments/description tag, I often see numbers and letters in groups like this: http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1835/commentsordescriptionxx6.jpg

A:can't write a cd anymore

If the CD was finalized, then there is no more writing you can do to it. And by default I belive all Audio CD's are finalized so they can be played in a CD player.

You'll have to create a new CD with all the old files, as well as the new ones.

I recently purchased a Samsung A920 cell phone for the purpose of the mp3 and expandable memory capacity. I also purchased an inexpensive USB SD card writer/reader, as well as a 512 Micro SD memory card. The writer/reader functions perfectly using a standard SD memory card, yet I can't seem to get the micro card in the SD adapter to function. Every time I attempt to explore the micro card, My Computer hangs up, or I have to use the Task Manager to end the process. If I attempt to drap and drop a file to the card, I get a "Disk is write protected" error, or even"Please insert disk into drive x." I have tried using a different memory card with no effect. A:Failed to Write to Disk - Delayed Write

Well what you need to do is get a copy of Diskeeper. Go to www.diskeeper.com and get a trial version. Then you open that up, and analize the drive your having trouble with. Soon you can go into your options and run a program in there called Frag Shield or something like that. That will change your MTF size to a proper size (Cheoose Recommended settings) and the problems will go away. I had the same thing happen to my old 250 GB drive. But that should take care of everything.

I just got a samsung 18x dvd burner and am confused about the speeds. When I am reading dvds using dvd fab decrypter the maximum speed at around 50% of the process is almost 8x. Also when I am burber a dvd at 16x it seems like it is fast at the beggining, also makes more noise, and then slows down. I thought that the read speed was 16x and the write speed was 18x...are these problems? I thought these speeds were constant and always used.

Thanks

A:DVD burner Read/Write Speeds

Reduce the speeds when you have problems, or allow the burner to automatically adjust speed to conditions. Some DVD discs will only burn in a satisfactory way.

Hello all,
does anyone have a solution to problems with getting a write protection message when trying to save new files or delete existing ones on a 128mb flash drive. I have used this device on both XP professional at home & 2000 professional at work. I have only had this device for about 2 mths & now I can not use it as I keep getting this message everytime.

I have read some of the post that date back to November 2004 regarding same problem encountered by other people but I did not see a post showing resolution to the problem. Is this problem fixable? Please help.

A:USB flash drive write protection

The 2 ways they can be write protected are physical and software...
Some units have a tiny switch on them that can be inadvertantly moved by putting it in your pocket so look for one of those.
If not install any software that shipped with it and check it thru there.

Hey people,

When I plug onto the network at my work office, a small progarm runs on CMD which was written by the IT guy. It basically finds your place on the network, maps the network drive and reconnects to all the office printers and sets the defaut printer.

I want to be able to do a similar thing at home if this is possible. All I want the program to do is set my default printer at home.

The gyt has shown me the program and it written in notepad but I dont know how he gets it to run at startup (as long as you are on the network)?

Can anyone help me?

Damien

A:How Can I Write A Program & Make Run Via CMD Upon Startup??

It's probably run as part of the login script. It's probably a simple batch file.

A:An attempt was made to write to read-only memory

It`s difficult to be sure from only one minidump.

For reference only. Your minidump crashes at CnxTgP.sys. This is part of your Conexant modem drivers. It also references wbtray.exe. This is the WinBackup 2 Traybar.

Uninstall Winbackup and see if your system becomes stable.

Try updating the drivers. If that doesn`t help, maybe try a different modem.

A:dvd drive wont write

not reading DVD's

a client of mine recently had a similar problem, unfortunately he had to replace the drive but after he sent back the drive to HP and they found that is was a manufacturing fault with that one and credited him after he threatened court action.

You don't need a special program to write 90min cd's, but you might need a special burner... Not all cd writers supports 90min... Check with your manufacturer to see if it's supported or not...

As for Nero...

Under options you'll find a tab called "Expert Features"... Under it, you'll find an overburn option...

Enable overburn, and set it to 90 00 00... That will tell Nero to write data to all 90 minutes of the disc...

Notice though that you might have to enable "Disk-at-once" to utilize it...

Hope this helps

I have been having a problem writing data to my CD-RW drive the error message I get is that the disk is full.
I have a Gateway computer with a Lite-on LTR 1610-2B CD-RW Drive.

A:Cannot write data to CD-RW Drive

What software are you using to write to the CD-RW? Have you formated the disk?
Did it use to work and now stopped working?

Hi ,

Recently I replaced the nx9010's Harddisk with Toshiba 80 GB HD. But it repeatedly give me errors/warnings "delayed write failed" Hence I'm unable to do installations of key softwares. When I checked on Microsoft website it says

"Make sure that your UDMA hard disk controller is using an 80-wire, 40-pin cable. For information about how to do so, view the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact your UDMA hard disk controller manufacturer."

How would I know whether its using 80wire 40 pin cable?I cold not find it in manuals.

Also what could be the reason of this error? Is Hard Drive spoiled so soon? or it is incompatible?

Regards

Can someone help.....I have a palm pilot with a MP3 player...songs are loaded onto a scan disk.......the majority of the songs are favorites from my CD collection......I have purchased a Sirius S50 Radio with a built in MP3 player......when I try to transfer the files to the new unit I get a message that the songs cannot be moved because they are write-protected........can I remove the write protection in my computer..........thks

A:Write Protection on Scan Disk

First off what is a "scan disk" do u mean SANDISK? as in a flash memory card?

if u mean SANDISK, the sandisk it not write protected. The sirius radio on the other hand, You may want to read the manual first and make sure it will let you import non-XM created files. This would be a DRM issue. Cracking DRM would be hacking as opposed to tech support so if that is your goal you may want to google around for information on your model.
