can not change user account picture on logon screen

Q: can not change user account picture on logon screen

Hi everybody,

I've been trying to change my user account picture in the control panel, it worked, and it showed up in the start menu, but it didn't change in the logon screen (still dell default icon). Does anybody know what's wrong?

My system is Dell precision M6600, win7pro 64-bit. My user account has administrator right (in fact I am the only user).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry for asking a dumb question, but did you try these?
For the account picture: User Account Picture - Change in Windows 8
For the background screen: Lock Screen - Background Image - Change in Windows 8

Note that if you have multiple accounts setup, then the login screen change is a lot trickier and a manual process from what I understand. Google that one...

Okay first hello and thanks for any info you could provide.

First my screen resolution is 1920x1200

The logon screen is this same resolution, thus the User Account Picture on Logon Screen size looks about 1 inch squared

Is there anyway to change this to make it larger

Note: I'm talking about the User Account Picture not the logon screen

If you're the only person that uses that pc, set a password and it will help make your pc more secure, plus you will have a bigger user account picture.

A:Unable to change User account picture

Hello Tally,

You might check to see if it opened a window that may be hidden behind another opened window. Sometimes these windows are small and can easily be covered up.

If not, then try a sfc /scannow command to see if it can find and fix any bad system files that may be responsible. Afterwards try again.

Hope this helps,

Is it possible to change the local user account picture at the windows logon screen via a command prompt.

Reason I need to do this is because I have about 200 workstations where the same exact local account needs to get created and a specific user account picture needs to be applied.

A:Change user account picture via command line

I don't know about copying just the picture. Log in as an Admin on the computer with the account you want to copy and Right click My Computer/Properties/Advanced/System Profiles. Highlight the Account you want to copy (you cannot be logged into the account you want to copy) and choose Copy To. Choose a Network Share. Then Copy it to each of the computers in question that you want to have the account on. this should also include the picture.. Maybe someone can write a batch file that would send it to all of the computers in the network in one click.

Hi there people!!!!!!

I was wondering if there is a way in which you can change the size of the user picture in the logon screen... What I mean here... is that, no matter the picture you use for it, the logon screen shows it at a "fixed" size... but sometimes, it is shown in a little frame, while in other PC's, you can see it bigger... I don't know if it's matter of resolutions... I hope I'm getting understood...

Is there a way to control or change that?

Thanks in advance people.

See ya!!!

Hi 7forum!

This is my last resort, so please help me!
I have after a long time searching ended up here on this forum.

What I want to do is simply to remove the picture & frame on my login screen, only the password, my name, switch user should be left on the screen.

To clarify, I don't want to:
Remove the whole login screen.
Remove password protection.
Remove anything else except for that picture and frame.

Thats pretty much it, I would be really thankful if somebody could help me with this because I'm close to changing to linux just to get rid of it .

Thanks in advance!

BAsically, I've 2 accounts:

Admin- 'A', Standard- 'S'.

When the logon screen appears, the admin account 'A' is selcted by default i.e. a border surrounding the username, everytime I've to manually select my account and enter password.

I just want my account 'S' to be highlighted by default when the logon screen appears. Is it possible? Would appreciate any help.

And no, i don't want to use the automatic login option. Just what I mentioned above.

Thanks & Regards

Hi all Some Background I'm currently administrator of a couple different groups of computers at a university and I've been looking into changing the layout of the logon screen I've found a lot of information but something that I have wanted from the start has eluded me What I'm trying to and button switch screen logon Trying to with make user guest account do I'd like to set the logon screen or welcome screen I suppose to display only one available account the guest account that I have personalized for professors or students to use not the same as the default Windows guest account I would also like to have the option to switch users at the logon screen preferably Trying to make logon screen with guest account and switch user button with the on-screen button that says switch users which I can't seem to get to display using my methods System Specs All of the PCs I am administrating have some differences Simply put I have a bunch of desktops running Win Pro x and a bunch of NetBooks running Win Starter x What I have tried I've made my attempts on one of the NetBooks thus far since I can carry it around On Win Starter it seems that quot Switch User quot is disabled but I think it is still in the PC because when I tried a Registry Hack that hides all user accounts except the one that was last logged into I had the option to switch users but only when the account I last used had a password The guest account does not and cannot have one Anyway the registry hack I just mentioned involves going to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft WindowsNT CurrentVersion ProfileList and creating a bogus key under the ProfileList key I also tried a similar thing to the above which didn't work I can't remember what it was though I have also tried hiding the default administrative account I made while keeping the other account visible but this results in me not being able to log into that account from the Login screen and the system will automatically login to the guest account because it doesn't have a password Not necessarily a bad thing but I need a way to get into the other account This was done by changing HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft WindowsNT CurrentVersion WinLogon SpecialAccounts UserList and adding the account to hide as a bit DWORD Don't hide all of your administrator accounts in this fashion or you'll be screwed FYI The third thing I tried was adding an entry for fast user switching and enabling disabling it in HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Polcies System and adjusting the quot HideFastUserSwitching quot key This didn't seem to have any effect I also tried various combinations of the above but that didn't get me the outcome I was looking for either This has all been on the netbook but I'm looking for a solution that will work on the NetBooks and the Desktops Closing Statements That's it thanks for any help

A:Trying to make logon screen with guest account and switch user button

Your best bet probably would be do not display any accounts.
Log On with User Name and Password

But your users would have to memorize login. Or you can write a little note right on the Welcome screen wallpaper by editing it in Paint and changing it.

I have a Windows 8.1 system on a lap top that was used by a former employee. Her name was still on user name and I couldn't change it without Admin privileges (otherwise was asking for a smart card). Found out how to get in to admin in safe mode with Net
User Admin yes- then discovered that the old log in and information / desk top is no longer available. The docs are under Users (old employee's name) in C drive, but the docs and settings no longer show up and the admin log in is the only one available - no
option to change users.
When I went in and said Net User Admin no - thinking if I disabled admin user it would go back to the old log in -  there was no log in available at all.

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.

If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.

Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer

Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

Having just learned from an OLD post here that renaming a user account apparently doesn't change the order in which the corresponding logon icons appear at startup -- due to the order being apparently determined by when each folder was originally created, which was when this computer was first opened back in 2011 -- I want to be able, after creating a new user account, to migrate data from the account whose name I changed. I'd been previously suggested to try User Profile Wizard from would this be a good idea, or can you suggest something different?

So this is probably the strangest problem I have ever encountered with Windows About two or three months ago I noticed that my user account had suddenly changed into a guest account I get prompted for an administrator password when trying to do any tasks that require administrator privilege It is not a huge hassle as I know the administrator account password Here a change changed it User can into account, I account how back guest is where it becomes very strange When I turn my computer on it automatically logs me into my user account the guest account When I got into the user accounts section of the control panel and try to manage user accounts it shows exactly zero user accounts on my computer Also when I try to change my user account the guest account to an administrator account precisely nothing happens It User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back gets evens stranger When I log out of Windows the only user account I can pick from to log back into Windows is the generic quot Administrator quot account My user account is nowhere to be found When I go to the control panel and try to manage accounts only the administrator account is listed There is an option turn on a generic guest account but nothing related to my original user account is shown Again this is in contrast to when I am logged into my user account the User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back guest account and see exactly zero user accounts listed on the manage accounts screen I feel that I am pretty good at avoiding bad websites and I do have an antivirus program installed not that that will prevent my computer from being infected but I have used it to do full system scans and I have found nothing on my computer every time Additionally I have Windows updates set to be automatically installed so all of the updates have been installed on my version of Windows I tried asking Microsoft support directly all I got was that no user accounts showing up under the manage user accounts tab is a pretty bad sign and that in order to fully diagnose the problem I would need to sign up for the quot Assure Plan quot or whatever it was called which cost for one year Forget that option for now Does anyone know how to resolve this issue How can I switch my original user account from a guest account and then how could I make it an administrator account once I have retrieved it so-to-speak from being a phantom guest account I mean I know the administrator password and all and so I have been able to essentially use my computer as if nothing is wrong But this whole issue seems very very strange and so I want to see what you guys have to say about it I hope these are not the signs of a more serious and potentially major issue Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this

Hi and welcome to the Forum
When you refer to the generic Administrator Account do you mean the Account that is hidden in Windows 7? If so did you activate it using this:
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable If you did the above then this is strange as forgetting the "Hidden admin account you must have at least one ordinary Admin account in Windows 7. You can't operate the system without one!!

No-one has meddled with the laptop. Don't know if SP1 was automatically downloaded
and installed - whatever the factory defaults were from Dell. I've not seen any references to this kind of issue on Vista, but have heard about a similar thing with NT.

Any suggestions how this could have happened?

Yes - I know I can reset passwords using the NT Password Editor (

In this screenshot you can see what pops up every time this new user logs in to our local network domain. The server name is "goodbuddy" on "TRUCKERSREPORT" domain and it seems to be running some kind of setup right at login every time. I don't want to allow this user admin rights for program changes, but i need to make it so an administrator doesn't have to enter their credentials in this every time this user logs into their computer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

A:Need to allow one account control change at logon

Do you have any idea what the silent setup is doing or why it is in the user's logon script? There is not really a good way to allow an application to run elevated outside of programs like avecto or powerbroker (not cheap) or runasspc (not recommended in a domain environment) or disabling UAC altogether which is a terrible way to skirt the windows security model.

I'm not sure what sort of access you have but the best bet would be to find out why this program needs to run in this manner and work around that instead.

I run XP Home Ed SP2 on my home pc. Myself and my wife have user accounts.
When i login to my account it takes for ever for the desktop to appear and all the automatic programs etc to start up (i use sophos antivirus & EZ Firewall). I cant even get taskmanager to appear until everything has loaded. I have to go for a smoke while waiting for it to finish.
My wifes login however is instantaneous - everything appears quickly and ready to go in no time.
I dont understand this - i assumed the same programs were running cos they are installed on the psame pc.
Is there a program i can run to show me what is loading from the log on screen so i can compare between the two user accounts?
or can anyone suggest something to quicken mine up?

When starting up my computer (WindowsXP), I get an error message telling me I'm not the user and I can't logon until I change the user. If I close out the error message and change the user to owner, I can log on.

The problem is, the user it wants to use to log on in the first place is "ASPNET." That user does not exist in anywhere on my machine. Not even in "user accounts," although, when I do a search on "ASPNET" I get about a dozen files.

My question is, what IS "ASPNET?" I need to get that off the logon screen and make "OWNER" the default logon.

Please help.

A:How to change the picture for the built-in admin account?

Best practice is to not use the built in Administrator account for general use. Create an admin level account for daily use and leave the built in account for emergencies. If you have only one account and for some reason you cannot log into it you will have no access, no easy way to solve the problem. Having an alternate account makes this much easier.

Does anyone know of a way, or an app, which would allow me to have my user account picture update every the login / lock screen is displayed?

Basically I have a folder full of images that I like to use as my account picture, but instead of changing it every week or whatever, I'd like for it to change every time I login, so next time the login/lock screen is shown, it's different..

Does anyone know of anything like this? Or would be able to make a simple script to do it?

EDIT: Ok I've made a script which updates the user profile .bmp file, but changing that file does NOT update the user profile picture if it's a local user (it works for domain users apparently).. Any idea where the actual edit needs to be made / what cache needs dropping?

Thanks for any help!

A:Auto-changing user account picture?

Hmmm. I fired up Process Monitor (PM) and was not able to see the step(s) that you need to do to get the desired results. You might want to spend more time on it than I did. Filter PM on Explorer and record/monitor the events that take place when you manually change a user's picture via Control Panel > User Accounts.

The profile bmp that you mentioned can be deleted if this is for a local user account - even after a restart, the user image is coming from somewhere else.

If you really want to dig into this issue - you can run PM from one user account while you log off and on to another user account. PM should show you where W7 is getting the image from for the log on screen.

When I attempt to choose the same program I use and I check "always use this program" the photo will open in said program but once I close it and attempt to open it again the same thing happens all over again. Scroll through the 'registered file types' box until you find jpeg.

Hi there,

We are having some difficulty with opening a network drive on Windows 7.

Recieve the error: "Logon Failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced."

This only happens if password protection has been turned on in the Network and Sharing Center. If it is turned off it works fine. The only problem is that it needs it be on so that other users cant access the drive.

Hi all.

I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition and I would like to use my current account as a Limited user account.

I realise that I will need at least one administrator account on my PC -- so I go into user accounts, create a new administrator account, then I try to change my current account to a limited account, but it will not let me!

See the screenshots;

I would like Admin to be administrator, and Dell07 to be Limited... I do not have the option to change Dell07 to limited for some strange reason.

I have managed to do this on my parents PC easily. I simply created another Administrator account, then changed their account to a limited one. I don't understand why this will not work on Windows XP MCE...

Any idea why this is happening?!

A:Help change my account to a limited user account!

You should log-on to the administrator account thru safe mode and this will allow you to change the account you want to so it will be a low-admin account. You can not change the account you are logged into t anything other than the account it is because it is the active account.

Ok so I went in and changed the back ground pic in Windows/System32/oobe/info/backgrounds folder, changed the name and instead of it changing to the one I put in there it changed it to some pic with flowers on it and a bird. I have made sure it is Jpg format I made sure it is the same size as the first one as well. Any idea what might be going wrong?

A:Failed at changing Logon screen Picture.

Welcome to Seven Forums FoxAnderson. There are restrictions on size and such. I was going to do it manually initially, but found such an easy automated method that it was not worth it for me. Try this small, free program. It only changes the background. It doesn't need to be installed, and doesn't run in the background once the image is changed. Logon Changer for Windows 7

I set up my Windows 8.1 tablet offline at my dad's and used a nude photo of my girlfriend as the user account picture. All done offline. About a week later, the tablet forced me to link it with my Microsoft account in order to continue to log into windows. Now I am finding that same nude picture is showing up when I am on the Microsoft website. That would not make my girlfriend happy if she found that out and I don't think the public needs her urinating. How can I prevent it from automatically posting it online. When I go to my account using a web browser, I can change it back to the Sylveon I originally had, and my user account on the tablet will still be my girlfriend, but eventually the nude photo returns to the Microsoft website. How do I stop this?

A:prevent Windows 8 from taking my user account picture and posting it to MS Websi

I don't know if you can stop it. I believe that if you log in to windows 8.1  everything you do with a Microsoft account if you log in to your computer that way will be transferd to all your devices  using that account.

Not that this is an earth shattering problem grin but I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with their local account picture not showing up on their Welsome screen in Windows I am the only person that uses my desktop PC and it's located in a secure environment so I chose to continue using my local account on my system vs my LIVE account In addition my environment is secure enough that I also chose to have the system automatically log on so I don't have to enter my password each time I start my system Prior to the release my system would start up and jump immediately to my desktop just startup picture on screen logon showing Personal during not as it did in Windows After the Welcome screen momentarily displays before it displays my desktop When this Welcome screen momentarily is displayed instead of displaying the photograph of me above my first name it instead displays the person symbol that Microsoft provides as an account default in the event that the user does not provide Personal picture not showing on logon screen during startup a picture of their own Now I have a laptop that also is running Personal picture not showing on logon screen during startup Windows that's setup the same way as my desktop PC and when I power up my laptop it does show my photograph of me above my first name on that Welcome screen I've double checked my desktop PC and the my picture does properly show up if I go into account settings so I'm clueless as to why the picture shows up on my laptop during startup but not my desktop PC Again not an earth shattering problem but I'd like to fix it if possible

i m unable to change my windows 8 appearance as this menu is disable in my windows can anyone please help me as i m new to windows 8 ?

A:unable to customize lock screen, start screen, account picture

If you're using the official release of Windows 8 Enterprise trial, you'll need to activate it. PC Settings doesn't have an entry to Activate, so you'll need to go to the Desktop to do so. The little Action Center icon on the lower right hand side (a little flag) should have a red X. Click on it, and it should say you need to activate. Do so, and you'll get those customizing features unlocked.

A:How to change User account name

Answering topic title [How to change User account name:
Changing the name of a created user account or of a created admin account will only change the "face" of the account.
The account's infrastructure retains the name it was created with.

A:How to change Account Name and User Name?

Under Accounts, your name is John Smith.
Isn't there the option "Edit name" right under John Smith ?

Settings > Accounts > right side, Manage my Microsoft account > left side, under your name, Edit name.

I don't know about changing user name.

I have had this pc for a couple years now and i had bought it from an individual. It at one time had windows vista ultimate 64bit and was upgraded to windows 7 ultimate 64bit.I do not have a CD program to repair the system.

My problem is i have 3 accounts registered and i am the administrator. The other 2 are user accounts.I use to awhile back be able to access the "change your user account,Change your account type, and manage another account" feature.I cannot for some reason any more,i click the short cuts and nothing happens.I tried searching the net and didn't find anything that could help me out.

I have problem in User Accounts, I am Computer Administrator (and account name is Administrator) and have been using password protect but when starting up windows, it won't stop at log on page to enter password, it log on to my accout automatic. And in user account page there are just 3 choices to choose which are Change my password, Change my picture and Setup my account to use a .Net passport. I just format drive C and Install new window xp. So how could I have 5 or 6 choices in User Account and enter my password when starting up windows.

A:Can't change my name in user account

Try this; press Windows key + R and type control userpasswords2 Highlight the account in question and check the box “Users must enter a user name and password” Click apply and ok and restart the computer.

I prefer to use an account linked to my Microsoft Account for various reasons, but I hate that it displays my full name on the login screen, on the Start Menu, ect.

Is there any way to edit the user text so it shows something different?
