Microsoft Updates Core System Fonts To Fix Blurred Fonts Issues

Q: Microsoft Updates Core System Fonts To Fix Blurred Fonts Issues

Internet Explorer and Firefox users have criticized the font rendering under recent versions of Windows in the past. Some Firefox users for instance began to notice a difference after the Firefox 4 installation or upgrade. Internet Explorer users after the Internet Explorer 9 installation. Add-ons, extensions and tweaks were discovered that resolved the issues on most systems. Firefox users could for instance install the Anti-Aliasing Tuner to improve the font rendering in their browser, Internet Explorer users a dll wrapper.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A very uncomfortable situation has occured in my PC, and I don't know what to do, I am trying to describe the problem but really am not able to find the correct words.

When I try to use Irfan View or similar Iamge vieing Software even PaintBrush, after using the software [i.e., editing, formatiing image(s)], suddenly my the Words in Menu Bar, in Start Menu, or in Icons getts BLURRED, and nothing is clear while the image is fine, I finally have to shut down the PC and again restart it. This solves the problem, but I really need a permanent solution.

Please tell me what is actually happening and how to repair it.

Please help me As Soon As Possible.

A:Emergency --Screen Fonts getting BLURRED

Sounds like it might be a heat issue. It's that or a virus or other nasty.
First thing, create a restore point,
start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore
back up all files that you can't live without. Address book, favorites, etc.
Can you give us your system specs. Operating system, ram, CPU, etc.
While your doing that download and run Spybot. That'll look for spyware and such.
Be sure your anti-virus software is updated and run a full hard drive scan.
Download Hijack this.
Note when you run Hijack this for the first time click on the scan button don't check anything. The scan button becomes a save log button. Do this and post your hijack this log in the Securiity section of this site. Just ask the wonderful folks there for a hand repairing your system startup.
As to the heat like symptoms check your case fans be sure you don't have excess dust in the PC or around the vents/fans. Try running it for a while with the side of the case off and a fan pointed into it.
If you have a video card check for the latest driver updates. If you do have a video card I'd suspect it's overheating.

Short story, I installed a boatload of fonts and chose not to replace any duplicate fonts. They installed ok and I was able to use them.

Then I restarted and they system fonts have all changed. Many use symbols instead of letters. This makes some functions impossible. It even effects most installed apps in some way or another.

I've tried using the "reset defaults", "restore a point" and a bunch of other suggestions from this site and others. I'm sure someone out there knows the fix. There are some suggestions to select "box color" them choose "list items-font". I've been unable to find that function on my system (8.1).

I've attached a screenshot that may point someone to a solution.

Hi guys,
Somehow, starting a couple months ago, whenever I open a Microsoft Works spreadsheet, I get an error saying there are more than 500 fonts in the system. Reduce the number of fonts or the display may be incorrect.
I don't notice any differences opening the files than when I didn't get that message, so what's more annoying is that message, because it appears every single time I open a Microsoft Works file, even MW files of different styles. It happens when I've opened the MW files from both Works 7.0 and Works 4.0. I have attached the error message. How exactly do I change the font of the file or get rid of the message?

Thanks, Jason

I've had Windows XP Home Edition Svc Pack 3 for 4 years. I have several
documents saved that have used the font ARIAL BLACK from the Microsoft
Core Fonts. I recently opened one of those documents and discovered all
the lines that were originally typed using ARIAL BLACK font have been changed to ARIAL BLACK (Italics) font. This change has occurred through my entire system. I even looked up Microsoft Core Fonts on an Internet site, and when it opened it showed ARIAL BLACK instead of ARIAL BLACK. When I open my Control Panel and display FONTS, it shows an icon for both ARIAL BLACK (True Type) and ARIAL Black Italics (True Type), but only the ARIAL BLACK in Italics appears on my default fonts in the drop-down box. How do I get the original ARIAL BLACK font re-inserted into my system, and how did this happen in the first place?

Hi all

For some reason, on my version of XP Home, some of the core fonts including arial, times new roman and trenchbucket etc have become corrupt i.e. when i double click the icon in the windows/fonts folder, the font view will appear but it will be blank. I have no idea how this has happened. I thought I fixed the problem after downloading the core fonts and deleting the corrupt ones an copying the downloaded ones in.

However i have programs such as HP solution center and Eraser where pop up boxes (ones that appear when u want to scan or arrange for a new task and the options for the scan or shredding is displayed) still appear, however they do not show any text. It is very fustrating as I dont even what the cancel button would be.

Is there any to solve this?

Hello all, I recently installed some new fonts for my PC from a CD ROM that we purchased many years ago. However, after installing the third set of fonts, I got the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." I am still able to use the fonts on programs like MS Word but I can't install, modify nor delete any of the font files since I can't get into that folder with success. How do I fix this problem?

My observations and troubleshooting are below. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, they would be greatly appreciated!

I do not get these symptoms under a newly created user account, however; I am not willing to take the solution of just using a newly created account as the only option. I am thinking there might be something in the HKCU key that might be broken.

Format -> font... in Notepad is causing the application to hang, resulting in a jump in memory usage (anywhere between 60-150 MB), and pegs the CPU usage to 50% on each core. Prodding around, I notice Word sometimes hangs like Notepad when accessing the fonts drop-down bar. Wordpad doesn't seem to have this problem.

I notice this also happens when checking the Fonts folder via the control panel, but I can cancel the progress bar (which hangs near the end) and regain control of the window. When going to the Fonts folder, explorer pegs the CPU like Notepad, but consumes ALL REMAINING physical RAM (4 GB in total, typically using up the remainder ~2.5 GB).

Attempting to move all 500+ fonts files out of c:\windows\fonts gets all but 275 of them. Trying to get the rest from safe mode does not seem to work. I initially wiped out the Notepad registry key from HKCU, hoping it was a broken configuration. I can get all the fonts to display in explorer sometimes if I stop the loading early and change the view type; I do not know what to make of this. I have tried turning off clear-type, and restoring default font settings. Nothing I have done so far has managed to fix the problem of Notepad locking up when trying to choose a font.

I saw the identical problem with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 using a Mid-2011 Macbook Air, Lion and Boot Camp 4.01.
I escalated several incidents with Apple over this, and also paid for an incident with Microsoft. Microsoft techs spent a very long time trying to resolve this issue but could not.

A:Replacing entire fonts folder with saved fonts folder.

If you locate the icon for Windows Explorer, right-click, then choose 'Run as Administrator', you should be able to copy fonts into the Fonts folder.
Those fonts already there, which Windows installs, cannot readily be overwritten - so you may get a few errors from this if your saved folder includes any of the system fonts. Other non-Windows fonts should install ok.
You can also right-click on an individual font file and choose 'Install' but this would be painful for many fonts. Perhaps shift-clicking a load of them, then right-clicking and choosing 'Install' would work.

Hello Technosauce and Welcome to PCHF

Now you know why installing themes with poor support/documentation is best avoided.

Try those 2 methods -the first is the most likely to work :

Using the Windows 7 installation DVD, you can extract the Sources\install.wim file, then move to the \1\Windows\Fonts and extract.

I do not know if you know, but Install.Wim contains all editions of Windows (Home/Premium/Ultimate). The numbers point to a different edition installation, but MOST important is the fact that all editions use the same fonts (so chose any folder you like).
I have done it in the past overwriting all the fonts found in c:\windows\fonts (best do it in safe mode).

If this does not work, try the second method:

1. Open Fonts by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Fonts.
2. In the left pane, click Font settings.
3. Click Restore default font settings.

I have created plenty of Computer Graphics in the past 7 years with Adobe & Corel software & have gone through 3 computers in that time. My problem is that I have just recently gone back to some of my old graphics that I've kept on diskette that were created on my old computer & my new computer substitutes other fonts in place of the originally used fonts from my old computer. The old computer which I still have was a 486 & uses Windows 3.11. Is there anyway to copy the fonts from the old computer to my current one that uses Windows 98?
-Dave Zippi

A:System Fonts

just noticed the 3.1. don't know that one but i'll leave this here cause you will like Font Loader if you use fonts a lot.

Copy&Paste Old Fonts to a disk. Install from disk to new computer in the standard way. (*Start-*Settings-*Control Panel-*Fonts-*File-*Install New Fonts.)

Here's a nice little font installer: (right click font(s) file and the font(s) is installed!) Simple and Free Program. ("Font Loader" is the name.)

If you are using the default aero theme I can change that for you. It will be a custom theme so you will need to do 1 of these 2 ways of Enabling custom themes for it to work.

When i upgraded to Win7 I found that the Chinese etc. system fonts are still protected system fonts.
I assume that they are still part of the Windows 7 OS and not a hang over from Vista. They stiill can't be removed.
I know that Batang etc do no harm. But they annoyed me when I was using Vista and after the upgrade they are still there to annoy me.
It's not just that I'm being a bit precious about them
I fight to resist loading every font under the sun onto my system. I easily could, I love fonts.
But if I can't have every font I want I really object to having to carry ones that I will never need or want.

Why do Microsoft make them unremovable?
OK, in some parts of the world they need these.
But surely Microsoft, in their wisdom(?) could have been a bit more flexible.

I think you can just double click on each font to install it, but not sure.

You could also run sfc /scannow from a Elevated Command Prompt. That should fix any corrupted fonts.

Even better would be to run these in sequence:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow

You can delete unwanted fonts from the registry.
Click on the Start button, then type regedit.
regedit will appear above the search box, right click on it and select Run as administrator.
When the registry opens scroll down to Fonts and click on it.
A list of your fonts will appear in the pane on the right.
Select the font you wish to delete and right click on it, select Delete.

Hey there, I'm running into an issue with the Protected System Fonts. Basically what happens is when I scroll down my list of fonts in Illustrator it just stops going down after I reach certain fonts.

MS Outlook
MT Extra

Those are the fonts. Now in Type>Fonts menu, it usually shows a preview of all fonts, but for those it does not. Any one have ANY clue why it's not letting me access those fonts inside illustrator?

A:Illustrator CS4 and Protected System Fonts

I use photoshop more than illustrator but I've run into this with Ps CS4. Try this:
Edit -> Preferences -> Type
uncheck Enable Missing Glyph Protection

The fonts you listed are non-Roman except MS Outlook, although it can handle non-Roman. The glyph protection thing lets you know Adobe will look for something close to that font if it's available, but in your case it's probably freaking out because it doesn't know what the hell to look for.
Hope that helps, sorry if it does not.

Yesterday, I rebooted. Now Windows thinks Tahoma Bold is the default where Tahoma used to be; if I use Tahoma as my system font, everything is bold; any websites written using Tahoma, like this one, are instead shown in Tahoma Bold; pidgin's Tahoma is now Tahoma Bold, you get the idea. Weirdly, writing in Tahoma/TahomaBD in Wordpad or Notepad works perfectly normally.

If I try editing files in C:\Windows\Fonts, I can erase Tahoma.ttf but not TahomaBD.ttf (File in use and protected). I

It's not that major a problem I guess, but it does make a lot of websites look ugly or strange. I'd appreciate any tips. :)

I'm having a problem that whenever I restart my computer (with Vista), everything in Firefox is displayed in bold and in Google Chrome everything is italicized. After looking up this problem on Google, I see that it's because the installed Arial font was messed up, and that it needed to be reinstalled.

So, I found a small executable that quickly reinstalls the Arial font. This fixes my problem. But, to my dismay, the font always reverts back to being messed up after a system reboot.

How can I permanently fix this problem?

Any help is appreciated =)

Click on Start, type command prompt.
Right click on Command Prompt at the top of the window and select Run as Administrator.
In the Command Prompt Window, type (or copy and paste) sfc /scannow and press Enter.
SFC will tell you what it finds, but you can also examine the SFC results as follows:

Open a Command Prompt (does not have to be as Administrator):Type (or copy and paste) findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.

Could someone please tell me where I can find the font files on my Windows Vista Home Edition DVD?

I have 7000+ fonts installed on my system and want to remove all but the Windows default fonts. I figure that the only way to do this, is to delete every font from the fonts folder and then copy the default Windows fonts back to the fonts folder.

In theory this should be possible, as previously on the Windows XP discs you could restore fonts, I managed it on one occassion.

As most of you probably know removing unwanted Fonts can greatly speed up the system. I'm using Windows 7 and would like some advice as to which Fonts I should remove.

Actually I don't plan on removing them, all I want to do is move them to another location, out of the Fonts folder.

If I can squeeze every tweak in order to improve my system performance then I'm on it !

Thoughts and advice ?

A:Removing Unwanted Fonts to speed up the system

Hello Jordan,

Welcome to 7 Forums.

You no longer have to move them. You can rt. click on any font in the font folder and select show or hide. Hidden fonts don't load when a program is opened, which, as I understand it, is when a long fonts list slows things down.

Generally it is safe to delete the default 'hidden' fonts in the folder. More here. Fonts - Delete

Hope this helps.

Some of my System font setting seem to have been reset to old fonts like Arial and one of the older Mac fonts. Previously, I think, it was Segoe. This is not something I deliberately changed. I think it might have happened as I tried to solve a Microsoft Office uninstall problem with a rather brutal deletion of Registry keys.

SFC /Scannow and Windows repair did not solve the problem.

Is there anything I can do, short of re-installing Windows?

A:System fonts have changed - how to restore to default?

If you have a restore point from before the change running it should reset the system font settings to what they were. You may want to make a new restore point first in case there are some unwanted changes when the old restore point is run.

For future reference a good way to back up your registry that creates fewer changes during restore is a dedicated Registry Backup Tool. I use the free Registry Backup from It uses shadow copy service to copy all the registry hives even though the system is in use. But there are others. Check the large download sites.

Hey guys...

Basically.. I have alot of programs that my computer cannot run.. When I try and open them, they all say that windows system fonts need to be set to Small Fonts.

That is fair enough. So I go to display... settings... advanced... and where the should be the option of Small Fonts, Normal Fonts, Large Fonts, Custom - there is no Small fonts option. It is the same in the appearance tab under font size. Apparently Small Fonts isn't an option on my PC as it doesn't exist... What's more, going to custom size and setting it to the equivalent of Small fonts doesn't work either as the programs say Custom Font Sizes are not compatible...

I even copied fonts straight from Illustrator's program CD disk and they are not active either??

I'm guessing I can re-install all my applications and that will fix the problem? But I'm leary, will OS 8.6 just install a 2nd program rather than re-installing over old applications?

Windows 8 comes with a whole lot of fonts pre-installed, quite a few of which I do not need and are merely cluttering up the place. I would especially like to get rid of the specialised fonts for Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic, Indian etc, etc & so 4th.

However, for many of them, when I try to delete them, I get the message that they are "protected system fonts". Surely, there aren't that many system fonts? Can we not get rid of or hide these fonts any more? Surely they are an unnecessary drain on resources, and boot-time extenders?

Start>Control panel>Fonts You can delete ones you will never use or just start a new folder and drag and drop the ones you don't need or want into that new folder..

People who receive my emails claim my fonts are always received almost to small to read.
When I send they appear to be normal.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

I need more fonts, tired of those limited and boring one.
I need to do some desiging and as such need new nice fonts to do this.

Can u tell me how i can find some on the net and make it work?
what do i need to do?

help? I downloaded one but it disappeared, when i found it, don't know how to make it work, e.g in word and Excel, Adobe photoshop , etc..........

A:new fonts

Once you download it, you need to place it in the fonts folder (c:\windows\fonts win98). If you downloaded a zip file, extract the file into the fonts folder, then it should be available within your programs.
The following link may be easier to understand.

Good luck,

I need to change the font zise of my print doc when I print from a Web side. The printer's leeter zise are to small.I can do that whit Microsoft Office or any other programs but not from a Web pages.
OS: Win XP Media Center 32/b

The only way I can think of is to use a pdf converter to convert the webpage to pdf and then use the pagescaling options to zoom and print the size you want.

First download and install PDFCreator from here:

Install it, then open the website you want to print, go to File-> "Print.." select the PDFCreator printer and wait for it to create the pdf file and save it anywhere you like.

Then open the pdf file ( I used FoxitReader instead of Adobe Reader for this example which can be found here, go to file -> print and change the percentage in the page scaling the way you want and print.

Hope this helps, have a nice day

1. Which fonts should not be deleted from Vista?
2.When deleting fonts using AMP Viewer, they delete from the viewer OK but are not seen in the recycle bin and are still shown in the Vista Fonts Folder. Trying to delete from the fonts folder is difficult as in order to see what the font looks like, one has to do so one at a time-very tedious.
Can anyone suggest a foolproof method of viewing and deleting groups of fonts?

The fonts in the places I attach to the screenshot, should be Segoe UI bold, but they are Arial.
Don't tell me to format anyway, I can't.
Thank you

Q: fonts

every time i try to download them into my font folder, they dont show up in psp7.

Where are you downloading fonts from and why?

I don't know what "psp7" is, but I know it's not where fonts need to be in Windows. Download whatever font you want to you desktop, then put it in the proper Font directory within the System32 folder.

I just installed Print Shop Deluxe 20 and something unusual happens. When I open any of my MS Works Databases, I get a message that there are more than 500 fonts installed on my computer and some displays may not show correctly, then it opens okay. I am assuming that this is from the PS installation that added fonts. How do I correct this? The message also tells me to reduce the number of fonts. If I eliminate fonts from the font folder, which ones would I choose? Help here please.

A:Too many fonts!

If you have a option to install the fonts then it is best to say no.
Then the Print Shop should have or may have a way to look at the fonts from the CD.

Another trick to use a fint without install then is keep them in another folder.
You have to open the font up (view it) and then when your in what ever program the font will show up in the list. If you still do not see it then look for Other and click on it and then your see a list again and it should show up there.
But you have to keep the font file open to have it work this way.
Now if your doing this and it works but then you want to use another font that is not installed so you open it and you do as above and you still can not see it then click on images or another thing you can do in the program and then go back to the font again and try again.

Q: Fonts

Is there some concise and accurate list of fonts that are required (not just 'supplied with')  by Windows 7?  Over time I've downloaded many that I no longer want or need but I certainly don't want to delete anything that's necessary.  I've looked at many places on the internet but the lists I find don't always agree with each other so I'm reluctant to do anything.
