Desktop IE9 Shortcuts

Q: Desktop IE9 Shortcuts

I have an issue with internet explorer on a 64-bit system. basically there are certain websites requiring popups that will only work on 64-bit IE9, but if i drag a link to these sites onto the desktop so the user can click on them directly they default to 32-bit IE9 and not 64-bit.

i have tried using the properties tab and open with and pointing that at the 64-bit executable, but even though it says its doing that, its still defaulting to opening the site in 32-bit

its very frustrating!

any advice much appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have made a habit of creating such shortcuts to the various websites that I find particularly helpful & user friendly.
Today I noticed for the first time that most of these shortcuts refused to launch with the traditional double click unless I already had my browser (chrome) open.
I would much prefer to open directly by launching from a shortcut.
Is this possible, & what might have changed if this is (as I think it is) different behaviour?
Thanks & small donation sent.

This is what I'd try ...

Open a Command prompt. The default directory (folder) is probably your home directory so type

cd Desktop

That should change directory (folder) to your desktop and then list the contents. Delete whatever you are trying to get rid of with

del "name"

The quotes are in case there are spaces in the name. If that doesn't get rid of the critter and the name is greater than 8 characters try the del command again but for name use just the 1st 6 characters followed by ~1 (or ~2 if it is the 2nd one with the same 6 char start). Example ...

del longna~1

Here is an actual run using my sparsely populated desktop and a test file added for the demo.

I have an easy question. Does it hurt to have a lot of desktop shortcut icons? Mine seem to be growing (currently 32) but all are what I use frequently like games. I have tried to look this up first (desktop icons) but did not answer my question. Is it better to have them listed in the 'Start' menu?
Looking them up in Programs is difficult for me as I have a defunct memory and can't remember who the game is made by as listed. Any suggestions please?

Thank you very much for your help.

To download HJTsetup.exe from TrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello sunespeg, I am coming in late here, as you have already been fixing items. HijackThis is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself. If you are do not have advanced knowledge about computers you should NOT fix entries using HijackThisYou have a suspicious file we need to check. Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\cdmodem7.exe to the upload and scan it. Let me know the results. Copy and paste the output to this thread. It should look something like this sample: File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.) Here's how I did it using Windows Movie Maker 6.0 as an example:

1. Open your "all apps" view
2. Right click the app you want to appear on your desktop
3. Select "open file location"

4. Once opened, right-click the highlighted exe file and select "create shortcut"

5. Select OK for desktop option

That should do it! Good luck.

I just recently installed google chrome. After deciding that I did not like it I uninstalled it. Since I have removed it I can no longer create desktop shortcuts. I can get the shortcuts to display on my desktop but it will not allow my to access them. In addition I can not access any links that are sent to my through emails. Each time I try I keep on getting an error message that says application not found. I reinstalled google chrome and that fixed the problem, but I really just don't like the page displays that it has and removed it again causing me to have this same problem. I'm currently using windows vista. Any help would be greetly appreciated.

I tried to delete them last night by deleting and emptying the recycle bin. But when I hit the "arrange by" command, all the deleted shortcuts came back with additional copies. We are now up to generation 5. I noticed that a little after I deleted some a window came up that said "copying from desktop to desktop" Can someone tell me what setting needs to be changed?

Hello, we are a college and we have a multiple user platform, but in our labs we have shortcuts on the desktop to all of the school's subscriptions, like MyItLab, and Courseport etc. I have created these as a favorite in IE7 and cannot right click and send to desktop a shortcut! We need the shortcuts to show, and we need them to show for all users. At this point, I cannot get them to show for any user including myself that has admin priveledges! Please help, thank you!

A:Cannot put desktop shortcuts from Favorites

Hi zinny,

Welcome to the forums,

To create a desktop shortcut from an IE7 favorite, do the following. Click the start orb and type 'Folder Options' into the search box and press enter/return. Select the 'View' tab and check 'Show hidden files and folders' and click 'OK'. Next, Open 'Computer' and under the 'Favorite Links' on the left hand side select 'Public'. On the right hand side, select 'Public Desktop'. This is where you will be placing your shortcuts. In IE7, open the Favorites list. Right click on the item that you are interested in and select 'Copy'. Next, go to the 'Public Desktop' you opened earlier. Right click again, and this time select 'Paste'. The shortcut will now appear on the desktop and the webpage can be opened from there. The main IE7 favorites list will be unaffected. You will need to repeat this procedure for each item that you require a shortcut for. When you have finished, you can reset the 'Folder Options' by repeating the first step of this procedure, but select 'Restore Defaults' followed by 'OK' in the 'View' tab.

Searching in google, I have found a .reg to fix it, but it didn't work.

Any idea?

A:Nothing happens when I click on desktop URL shortcuts

Hello ws2010

I don`t know which reg fix you tried, but this is the one I would try first

Go to the site below

Line 12 Right hand side

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Hello Altkon,

This tutorial will help show you how to create internet website shortcuts on the desktop in Vista. I'm not sure about the icon issue. If the website does not have a favicon for it, then usually the shortcut will use the defaule "e" IE icon instead.

A:Desktop shortcuts dissapear

I am sorry that your client has this problem, but I am glad to see your post. I was beginning to think that I was the only person seeing this.

I have several desktops that have this issue. They might have one or two shortcuts disappear every few days or they may go for weeks without losing one. One system lost more than half in one day. Some shortcuts were to files/apps on a server, but others where local. e.g. a shortcut to the network and sharing center. Some shortcuts that went away are used every weekday - so it should not be a desktop cleanup routine.

My laptop has done this too; in particular, the shortcuts to each network adapter that I added to my desktop.

I don't have solution for you, but I do have a few questions:

What theme are they using?

Because of some apps that I run I must use the basic theme and I tell the OS to adjust that for best performance.

Do you use MS RDC/RDP to access these computers?
If so, are you using RDP 8?

Any other remote control software installed?

I've not put too much effort in solving this since W7 is already costing us many lost man hours... but I am curious as to the cause/solution.

These systems are near my desk, so see them every work day. I don't use all of them myself, I just see them. The users ask me why this happens and I help them put them back. It probably does not matter, but I make the icons via:
right click on a file
select copy from the context menu
right click on the desktop
select paste shortcut from the context menu

I thought about writing a little app that inventories the shortcuts and writes the status/time to a log file so that I could try to correlate the disappearing act with events in the OS events logs... but I have more pressing matters to solve with W7.

Hey guys i just have a quick issue with my windows shortcuts, the icon wont load for them, it only effects shortcuts and it turns them all into miniature blank windows or the default file type (you know that bent piece of paper with random symbols?)

It started happening one time after i minimised world of warcraft, its happened a few times but normally repairs itself after i restart, but the issue remains..

Anyway its not so much of a problem in that they all work but it makes things confusing when i try to open something and theres always the concern that it could be something bigger.. can anyone help me out?

A:Vanishing desktop shortcuts

Hiya karlosio.

It`s certainly not something that should be happening so there`s not a recognised system fix that I know of. After clearing out your temp files, cookies and of course the recycle bin, I`d recommend updating and running full scans of your anti- virus, malware and spyware and see if that comes up with something.

You could also put the XP CD in the drive and type sfc /scannow in the run command to confirm the system files.

If nothing nasty shows up or the problem persists after that, run Hijack This and post a log on here and I`m sure one of the clever guys on here will pick it up.

Perhaps this already exists in some powertoy (if so let me know so I can get it), but I want to group similar/related desktop shortcuts into catagories (example) all dvd related apps into one group on the desktop that would STAY IN PROXIMITY TO EACH OTHER IN A GROUP. I do not want to simply create a new folder for the desktop as you can not see the individual programs without double clicking on the folder first. What I want is essentially program groups like in windows 3.1 but where you could see the actual icons for the individual apps.
If anyone knows, please let me know, if anywone wants to write it, let me know.

I work on win7 after several gooood years on XP and now:
I have on my desktop several shortcuts, which open the most frequently used programs. They opened usually with a double left-click, as always, but some time ago they ceased to function in the usual way (double click) and now in order to open a program I must either :
- right-click and then click on the "open" in the menu
- or drag the shortcut to the taskbar and open it with a left click.
I tried to change the setting in "folder options" to single click. And the shortcuts now open, but then I find that the various folders do not open neither with one nor with a double click and only with "enter"
What can be done
Please advise

Every so often my desktop refreshes all of the shortcuts I have on it, I do have quite a few on there, but I never had this problem with earlier versions of Windows. There doesn't appear to be a time limit to when it does it.

If anyone could let me know why it does it ? Or how to stop it doing it I would really appreciate it.

I wouldn't mind it so much, but every time it refreshes I have to wait before I can do anything.

Many thanks in advance for your help,

I'm having a problem with the desktop program shortcuts. The laptop is Windows Vista Basic, and a Dell laptop (if that helps).

I can open documents, and they work. But I cant open shortcuts for programs on the desktop without the "Open With" box appearing, or a "Set Associations" box appearing.

As far as the "Open With" box goes, I can select the program from the list and it works fine. It's just inconvenient. When the "Set Associations" box appears, I'm not so lucky. The control panel displays a message telling me that the file is corrupt.

Is there anything I can do to fix this without taking the laptop to see a specialist?

And if there is, can you explain it in idiots terms, because I'm not incredibly computer literate

Thank you in advance.

A:Problems with desktop shortcuts

Try this fix: LNK

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I work for a company and we've been having an ongoing issue with the way new browser Windows are popping up. When a user clicks on a shortcut they have on their desktop, it pops up in a window behind the active window. It hasn't been a real major issue, just more of a nuissance than anything else.

Myself and a few other people have been doing some searching and can't find anything on the subject. I tried doing a search on these forums, but was getting an error message. I've tried playing with the different settings within IE6 but haven't been able to fix anything. Is there some magic setting that we're all missing? The strange thing is that it works fine for some people and others it doesn't.

All of the users that are having this issue are using IE6 on Windows XP Pros SP 3.

A:Problem with IE desktop shortcuts

I forgot to mention in my original posting that I did try resetting IE 6, but it didn't change anything. I included a couple screen shots to help illustrate what is happening.

What I did in the "New browser behind" jpg was I clicked the IE icon on the desktop to open IE. Then I clicked on the google shortcut. The screenshot shows how the windows are popping up. In the "normal layout" jpg I clicked on the IE icon on the desktop to open both windows, and this time the second window opened in front.

Hopefully this info helps if it seemed confusing before.

I don't think you can display that many directly on the Desktop, but by creating a QuickAccess toolbar you can store quite a few shortcuts in there, and you can also create an additional Taskbar on the Desktop which could house quite a few more of those shortcuts.

I am new to Windows XP Pro. (Sorry, all you Vista users.) I copied all my desktop shortcuts from a Windows 2000 computer to my new desktop. The shortcuts point to files located on my server and all the drives are mapped. So why are my keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+alt+key) not opening the files any more? In 2000, I was used to being able to run any desktop shortcut by pressing the ctrl+alt combination. Now when I do that, nothing happens. If I go to the desktop and double click the shortcuts, they open immediately. How can I resolve this problem?

A:Desktop Shortcuts Not Working

While I'm not sure about this, you may have to remap all of your shortcuts to make this possible. Try remaking one as an experiment - if it works, then that's the solution for the rest.EDIT: A bit more research seems to indicate that Ctrl - Alt - key isn't a valid Windows shortcut combination. So, I suspect that this was an add-on program on your Windows 2000 PC that isn't installed on your XP PC.

I was recently working on a client s computer and have a problem that I haven t seen or dealt with before I did some searches but can t seem to find any similar issues so maybe someone here has encountered it According to the customer she was moving some pictures to be copied to a CD She got a pop up asking if she d like to install something to her desktop she can t remember what the quot something quot was She clicked no but it apparently installed anyway and Desktop Shortcuts Reappearing she suddenly had Reappearing Desktop Shortcuts shortcuts on her desktop That isn t a typo which kinda made me chuckle She deleted all the icons and restarted her machine but when she restarted some of them were back This is where I get confused because it isn t a shortcut for a website or some sort of adware the icons that come back are just shortcuts to the original pictures she was working with I have ran a full virus and spyware scans but found nothing Any ideas

A:Reappearing Desktop Shortcuts

First, I'd get a note of what that "something" was :whistling: She might have hit some accidental setting, though I'm not familiar with any setting that does that!

When I click on my shortcuts on the desktop, they won't open. All that comes up is the printer

window which wants me to select a printer to use even though I'm not wanting to print anything.

( I have 2 printers ). Now I have other icons on my desktop that open when i click on them such as

Word etc. I'm just having trouble with shortcuts that I created from web sites. I may have removed

something that caused this problem. About 3 months ago I saw something unfamiliar in trash can so

I deleted it. How it got there who knows. Seems like that was just about the same time my problem

started. Unit is 2 years old. Never had any problems. System is XP, not XP pro. Can any of you

wizards out there help.

Hello seesaw409 and welcome to BC

Sorry it's been so long for us to get to you. Can you remember any details about the "something" that you deleted from the trash can? If so, please describe. Also, are you experiencing any other issues with your computer? Knowing this can help us diagnose the problem.

Hello all!

Newbie here :P

My kid pressed something on keyboard and names of all shortcuts on my desktop now appearing on right side as on attached file.

I didn't understand how can I revert it back Googled it a lot, but didn't find any solution. Maybe can you help me?

UPDATE: I found this thread text aligned right to icons!? and it's exactly my case, but! there is no direct solution as well. Seems there is some hot key, but nobody knows it?

UPDATE 2: I solved the issue. It was caused by Fences software. I turned it off, refresh icons, and when they became normal, turned Fences on.

I have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

A:Non working Desktop Shortcuts

Your links are broken - for whatever reason (maybe the files were moved to another location or partition). You have to recreate the shortcuts which should be fairly easy. Those shortcuts are useless. All you have left are the pictures.
Paint you find in %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe

I would suggest closing down all running applications, and then opening your browser and downloading Process Monitor. Once downloaded to a temporary folder (like C:\TEMP or C:\Users\<username>\Downloads), double-click and launch the procmon.exe to start Process Monitor - note that it will begin logging immediately. Simply double-click any desktop icon, and when it fails, go back to the Process Monitor window and click File > Save. Note the location of the file, and click the "OK" button to save the LogFile.pml file. Compress (with 7zip, winrar, winzip, whichever app you use) and upload the file to a file hosting site for one of us to download and review to see if we can make any determination as to why this might be happening.

I am new to bleepingcomputer forums. I am having this issue with my IE shortcuts and I don't know how to fix it. Everytime I go to click on a desktop shortcut that was created through Firefox or IE7 I get this line across the upper part of my screen and it freezes. Doesn't happen when the shortcut is for a folder in my computer (windows Media Player, Documents etc). Any suggestions. Thanks.

My roomate said he downloaded software to show file extensions, then deleted the software. Now all my shortcuts have .lnk showing. I do not want the .lnk to show, and I do not want all the file extensions showing. Does anyone know of the software he might have installed, and how can I change them back to previous settings?

I had expected these items to point to my desktop but most appear to be on the users\public\desktop. Is that as it should be? I saved a few downloads to my desktop and they weren't there ... at least not on the desktop right in front of me. But if I go into my desktop via start-myname-desktop I see the items ... which is kind of telling me that while I am signed in as me - I am not seeing my own desktop. Is that possible and how do I correct this?

A:Desktop items, shortcuts etc

Set it to \users\username\Desktop and see if that works.

Using Windows 7 Pro (32 bit)

Everything going on well then all pf a sudden, I lose all my short-cuts on my desktop.

I know they are still there as I can see them in the Desktop folder in my branch of Users (I am the only user!)

If I try to put another short-cut on everything goes ahead quite normally until I complete - and then the screen is still blank of short-cuts, but the new short-cut is in my Desktop folder as it should be

It's just as though they are hidden.

I have done nothing to cause it.

Has anyone any ideas?

A:Missing shortcuts on Desktop

Just to check, right-click somewhere on the desktop, point to View and ensure that Show Desktop Icons is checked. If it's not, click on it; if it is checked however, let us know.

I am getting the error message"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." on all of my desktop icons. This happened about 7 weeks ago and my savant brother saved my rear. He's not here to help now. SO....I know that he downloaded and ran something....any ideas?

Someone please help me out here, this is killing hours that I don't have to kill.

It may be your antivirus. Try disabling it or uninstalling it and try and access it again.

I've done something that seems to have 'turned off the desktop' - because when I try to call up a prog from a desktop shortcut I get this message;

The file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel.

Can someone tell me how to get things working properly.

IE doesn't work properly ever since I tried Firefox. When I took Firefox off - two or three addons seem to have stayed on the PC (but I cant find them).

Second problem is that my web editor won't call up IE to view changes.

Hope someone can help.

I was wondering how could I center my desktop icons, here's a picture to show what I'm talking about:

I would like for the icons to be more on the left, since it isn't as centered as I would like them to be. Is there a registry edit or something I can do to make that happen?

I tried editing the "IconSpacing" key in regedit but it won't let me go past -760, same with "IconVerticalSpacing"

A:Centering my desktop shortcuts

The exact center of your monitor is a grid line, so you can't place ONE icon in the exact center unless you un-check 'Align icons to grid' and place them manually.
(Or, always have an even number of columns, then they'll always be centered.)

Uhh, i've checked with the hijackteam about this problem and the guy there redirected me here. he suspects that its not a malware related problem.

When i double click on a shortcut on my desktop (e.g. itunes) nothing comes up. however, when i right click then click run, the program runs normally. this problem also occurs in the start menu. i have to right click and press open instead of double clicking the icon directly. can anybody advise???

also, when i add the quick launch bar to my windows bar, it will disappear everytime i reboot. i find this quite irritating.

can anybody help with this problem? i suspect its because i accidentally deleted some scripts while deleting flyakiteosx from my computer. thankyou! any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Hello Vincent,

If the shortcuts still work, then see if using the program in the tutorial below to change the shortcut arrow back to the default arrow can fix them afterwards.

hello, i don't normally need help with simple things like this but this has got me. In previous versions of Windows, i'd delete a shortcut off the desktop and it'd inform me that i was only deleting the shortcut and not the actual program. When i try on Windows 7 though, it informs me, i'll need admin rights to delete this file, and then gives me the directory /program file/ect. This seems to me that it's going to delete the actual file instead of the shortcut. Am i understanding correctly, and if so, how do i just remove the shortcut?

A:how to delete shortcuts from desktop

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I've just double-checked my desktop as the scenario you describe seems a bit strange. If you delete a shortcut you are not removing the program or application, but just the shortcut to it, so I think you're absolutely right to query this behaviour.

I'd be inclined to run a full anti-virus check in Safe Mode to see if anything shows up. Malwarebytes is always a good choice for this.

Ok, that's not funny...

I played some UT3, made some screenshots w/ Fraps to the desktop, downloaded a vid to the desktop, and when i was finished, there where some empty spots in my icon rows on the desktop. I thought that something shuffled the icons around, but then discovered that about 4-6 shortcuts where missing. There where simply gone, i did a search for them.

After some investigation (including examining my desktop backup) i found that all the missing shortcuts have a broken link (the destination doesn't exist at the moment).

So, what is this strange behavior? Shortcuts that no longer work are deleted automatically without warning the user??? Anyone had this problem too?

I'm a little worried...

PS: The shortcuts where created in WinXP prior installing Win7. Could this be the problem and why?

A:Some desktop shortcuts disappeared!

I too have this problem. For instance, I have a phone with an SD card. Link is not good when I don't have the phone docked. Similar with my thumb drive. I really hate that it keeps deleting icons.

One that really bothers me is that I have a set of icons to connect to other computers on my local network. It includes one to "this" computer. That one went away overnight last night. Strange!

Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Two problems.
1. A Magical desktop shortcut won't delete. It actually doesn't exist as far as part of windows is concerned. It can't link, and it just doesn't exist, except when I show my desktop. When I try to delete it, Windows says it doesn't exist.
2. New folders run and hide. On the desktop, whenever I create a new folder, it creates but doesn't show. It does exist though, because if I create a folder with the same name, it wants to replace it. So the moment I replace it, it disappears.

Last week I clicked on a desktop shortcut to a web site a Word document came up with what looks like is computer code I removed my MS Office which also removed Word and started using WordPad been have infected. Desktop shortcuts I clicked on a shotcut and a WordPad document came up with what looks like is computer code I clicked on most of my other shortcuts and selected Properties Desktop shortcuts have been infected. Under type of file I get quot DOC File doc quot Under Open With I get quot WordPad quot I don quot t think I have done anything to create this problem but I am just dumb enough to contribute to the situation UPDATE I received a notification email stating there was a post to my discussion I clicked the link and WordPad came up I copied the link and pasted it in IE Desktop shortcuts have been infected. Address bar and immediately came to this site I then proceded to double Desktop shortcuts have been infected. click all my desktop icons and each one that contained a link brought up WordPad I then opened my deleted emails which only go back to and each one that contained a link brought up WordPad How do I stop the links from opening WordPad Another UPDATE I created a shortcut for this web page whenI double click it I get the WordPad program However if I create a Favorite and I click on it I get directly to this webpage SOLUTION Go to control panel and find set default programs then find your browser and select it Then click choose defaults for this program and select all availible

A:Desktop shortcuts have been infected.

It sounds like you tried to open a document that MS Word 2000 could not display properly or the file was not really a Word document.. Uninstalling MS Office 2000 will cause the operating system to associate WordPad with the file extension of ".doc"... so that part is normal.

I have a business associate running XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension. He said he was just moving some files around and suddenly his desktop is full of shortcuts, literally hundreds of copies of documents. For example the shortcut’s title may be “Copy (340) of document.doc”. He said he cannot delete any of them, they just keep coming back. I suspect some type of spyware infection (he is running only Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, no anti-spyware programs that I’m aware of). I was wondering if these symptoms are indicative of any specific infection?
