I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to open .eml files in IE8

Hi tomosk, welcome to 7F

Try:

Open IE8. Go to Tools on the menu bar >Options >Programs tab.

At the bottom you will see Internet Programs, and a button for Change programs, click on the button.

The Default Program window will open, click on second choice down, Associate file type or protocol with a program.

Scroll down, and click on .eml . Then to the upper right click on Change program button.

In the Open with dialogue box you will see the recommended program Windows Live Mail, and Other programs, click on the down arrow to the right of Other programs to see more choices.

When you find IE click on it, then OK your way out.

Close then re-open IE to make sure setting takes affect. Check to see if you can now open .eml's in IE8.

I am having a problem in IE 6.0. Clicking on a link sometimes displays an red X in the top left corner. I have had this problem for a while but I couldn't figure exactly what the problem is. I still don't know what exactly the problem but I am pretty sure that at least I know the general direction of the problem. It seems that the problem lies with pdf files. for some reason I can't seem to open them in IE. I have acrobat reader 5.05 installed. Any help will be appreciated and thanks. Robert

I have just installed a new printer Canon MP830 and I cannot open the User Manual.

The files are UsersGuide7q.chm and UsersGuide7q_ver.txt

Neither will open.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

A:Unable to open help files

You should be able to open the .txt file with Wordpad. You may want to try the "CHM File Association Fix" at the link below which also has a "TXT File Association Fix". Instructions are on the page.

A:unable to open pdf files

Get rid of Adobe Reader. Close all your browsers so the plugins will be removed, too, and uninstall it.

Then, download and install (with browsers closed) the Foxit PDF reader. It is small, fast, reliable, doesn't need umpteen updates, and works.

Or:

Free, small, stable PDF readers (some allow limited editing):

Haihaisoft PDF Reader
Foxit PDF Reader
PDF Xchange Viewer
Dirk Paehl's PDF Viewer (Requires GhostScript 7.03 or higher)
CAD-KAS PDF Reader
eXPert PDF Viewer

Not sure if this is the correct area to post this question. I got a new/rebuilt Dell computer about a year ago. I had Windows XP and now have Windows 7. The computer guy transferred my files over and today when I was trying to clean out some of my files I couldn't open a bunch of them. Windows said it was unable to open them. I then noticed that the files I couldn't open were listed as NCO type rather than JPEG, Microsoft Word, etc. Can someone please tell me how I can open these files. There are some pics and things that I would like to save? Thank you so much.

Hello all, this is my first post and I hope I will make my self clear to you.

I am using Windows XP and a malware hit my system. It is "windows Antivirus Pro" 3 days ago.

Now some of the files which I modifies after its attack turned into green in color and I am unable to open it. I am also unable to run any .exe files as well as any command from RUN like regedit or some thing else.

I have downloaded "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" and scanned my HDD with the help of another system. Yet those files are GREEN in color and I cannot open it.

Can some one please tell me what to do with those files (there are many like .xls .doc .pdf ....)

Thanks in advance.

Is that the exact message that you get? If so, the issue appears to be that the filename at the end is ".wps" - there's no filename for the program to open! What email program are you using?

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.

A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.

See if you can launch exe files now

I have an external HDD on which I have backed up 15G of Data. I wish to retrieve some Pictures from this Backup but when I try to open it in order to restore these pictures I cannot find a programme to open it with. I do have Windows NT but can't seem to get it to open with .bkf.

A:.bkf files unable to open

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

Which version of Windows?
Which SP?

You have to restore them. You cannot open a backup job in the same way you can open a folder you have copied to a disk.

You will have to use Windows' backup utility to restore the files; or a different program if you did not use Windows' backup utiliity to create the .bak file.

That's why I recommend using Acronis True Image [ www.acronis.com ] and clone the HDD.

I am NOT a vendor for Acronis. I am a user.

I have some pictures stored on the H.D., with .qvs suffixes, which I am unable to open. I get an error message reading that they are in "unsupported file type". They were viewable pictures when I stored them and I didn't assign the suffixes. They wre originally .jpg. I have no idea as to what caused the change. Is there any way to retrieve them now?

A:Unable to open .qvs files

The only .QVS files I have come across were created by a (now very old) Casio camera. It may be a proprietary format for Casio, but it's not a format in use by anything these days.

A couple of days ago I noticed that Google Chrome was being a bit odd by not always opening as it should when clicked. Today things have gradually gone from bad to worse. I am now unable to open My Computer, Folders, Recycle Bin, and Text Files. Things like Photoshop, FLV files, PDF files will open. Either by clicking on them or by opening their default programmes. So will all of the Windows office files like Word or Access etc. Control Panel will also open.

Any ideas folks ????

A:Unable to open folders and some files ????

First thing I would try is a scan with MBAM

to see if it's malicious. If that doesn't turn up anything suspicious then you could try a Restore Point, if available, that precedes the problem, or reset default file associations. But see what the scan shows first.

Edit: btw the scanner in the free version is the same as the paid. The freebie scans just fine.

Hello

Since installing AVG 9 I have a few problems, one which is now known to AVG that attachements cannot be sent in the likes of Yahoo and Sky Mail, this has gone to the developers.

This one may not be AV related so thought I would ask here.

I have been unzipping files in Vista with no problem, after the download of AVG 9 I am unable to open them.

When I right click on the file I do not get Extract all in the list.

I do not know which is the program that opens zip files within Vista and so I am unable to tell it which program to Open with.

Can any help me please.

Hello Dee, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Downloading and merging the ZIP download in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default ZIP associations.

I am trying to fix my son's ASUS Win 7 64-bit laptop which will not open exe files for loaded programs (like word, virus checkers, firefox, etc.); it will open all Win 7 services exe programs (like regedit or chkdsk). I have fixed the registry root file with a registry script that I found on the internet in two or three places (and they were consistent). I checked the registry file and all the fixes are in place; however, I still can not open programs. I was wondering if any Win 7 geeks might know of what I was missing or could look at in the registry to make the exe files open. If you need any added info, let me know and I will provide it. Thanks in advance for any help.

So I downloaded the free trial of Office 365 directly from Microsoft, and have a couple issues:

WORD
When I try to open a file from Windows Explorer, a Window opens up asking me which program I want to use to open the file. None of the choices is the Word program that came with the Office 365.
Even stranger, I create a Word document and save it to my computer, when I try to open that same file the same window pops up
The only way I can open a file is to open the Word program and open the file from there.

EXCEL
When I try to open an Excel file from Windows Explorer, nothing happens. Same as above, the only way I can open a file is when I open Excel and open the file from Excel.

Can anyone help decipher whats going on here?

A:Unable to open Word files

Yes, you need to associate the Docx and XLS extensions with the correct program.
I can't remember off the top of my head how to do it, and it is different for different versions of Windows.

Hi

I have a USB drive that until yesterday was fine.

Now some files won't open although I can still see all the files.

If I try to copy one of the files to another location I get a Data Error: cycle redundancy check.

If I try to open an excel file I get an error saying that the file may be read only, or you may be trying to access a read only location or the server the document is stored on is not responding.

Is there a way I can repair these files. To be honest I only need to get the vba which is stored the files, then I can recreate new files.

It is not just the excel files it is all different file types, the strange thing is that some of the files do open....

Cheers

A:Unable to open XNK Outlook files

XNK files are shortcuts, as you know. Uh, you deleted the original, the shortcut links to nowhere. The shortcut contains no information about the original file except where it was located.
Sorry, but it appears you don't have any way to get it back, unless you can undo what you did in cleaning up.

Uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader that you have installed. Do you have any other Adobe Acrobat products installed besides Reader? After removing everything, restart your computer, and then reinstall Adobe Reader 9. I'm assuming you're running Windows XP or Vista. If not, install the most recent supported version for your operating system.

Are you running Excel 2007 - and are you sure that the file extension is .xls and not .xlsx?

Hey everyone, this is a Windows Vista Home Premium. Recently, I obtained a legal version of Microsoft Office 2007 ; however, I'm unable to automatically open .ppt (PowerPoint files). For example, when I download a Word document on Firefox, I have the option Open With Microsoft Word, but when I download a PowerPoint file, I have the option Open With Browse instead. When I try and select a program from "a list of installed programs", PowerPoint is not on the list and I'm not sure which file to choose when I am given the option of browsing through my hard drive. Thanks for your time!

A:Unable To Auto Open Files

Is Powerpoint listed on the Start...All Programs...Microsoft Office menu? If not, I'd suggest inserting your Office 2007 CD and modifying the installation to include it.

If it is there, then try and open something with it - does it work?

Since the option to open with Powerpoint doesn't seem to be available - it's likely that something is damaged within the installation. I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2007 to try and fix it.

Hi,

I recently purchased a laptop and hooked up my Seagate HDD to access different files on there (music and videos mainly). The HDD was originally connected to my desktop. Both systems run Win7 Professional 64-bit.

However, on the laptop, there are some files (it seems to be older ones) that I can't run from the hard drive. I have to copy them to my actual hard drive in order to run them. Trying to rename one of these files yields " File Access Denied: You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file" even though I only have one account on here which is the admin.

Is there any way just to do a clean wipe of the security restrictions so I don't have to worry about this?

I tried taking ownership of the drive and all its contents but that didn't seem to change anything.

Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to open some files on external HDD

Did you click on Property ->Security Tab to view permissions? And click on Advanced as well.

Don't know, or would recommend a global change. chmod would work in UNIX, but I'd limit that to a folder at most.

Yesterday I edited one and today when I try to open it, an error message popped up and said that the file is a read-only file, hence cannot be opened. The similar thing has happened to several of my other files recently.

Am I making some ridiculously stupid mistake whilst saving the file or is there a virus on my computer?

A:Unable to open Excel Files

Hi hohohoo, welcome to TSF.

If you're conscious of a virus infection, you need to check with the Security team by doing the following:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

Otherwise, check if the files are indeed "Read-Only" - right clicking the file and checking it's attributes.

You could also try a Detect and Repair from within Office.
Open up Word, and go to Help > Detect and Repair.

Or

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
2. In the Exploring window, open the drive or folder that contains the file.
3. Click the file name.
4. On the File menu, click Properties.
5. Click the General tab.
6. Clear the Read-only check box.

A:Unable to open files after CHKDSK

Hello,

I had the same problem a while back and unfortunately did exactly what you did and let the computer run chkdsk.

After it finished I was left with all the physical files but none of them would work and the computer could not recognise any of them.

After doing a lot of digging around, which I expect you have as well, AND speaking to a guy from a hard drive recovery copmpany I found out that I had to completely format my drive and lost all my data.

Sorry to tell you this but there really is no other way to get the drive working again unless you want to pay through the nose and send it to one of these recovery companies. Even then, the guy advised me he couldn't gaurantee they would be able to get all my data back, so not only would you be out of pocket but you wouldn't have all your data back as well.

I found that what the computer does while running chkdsk is it takes out all the things it does not recognise and just gets rid of them instantly. These things being info like the ID3 tags for mp3s and similiar bits of data from movie files. Basically the tags that tell the computer what type of file they are.

Once they're gone, they're gone. There is no way to retrieve them.

I had 450gb of movies, music, pictures etc that went, so i was not impressed. So I just bought the bullet and reformatted the drive.

Since then, I have not had a problem with the drive. The only thing I have found is that you have to safely remove each time before shut down, then when you power your pc back on wait, and then plug the usb cable in. The computer will then scan the drive and pick it up perfectly everytime.

I really hope this sheds some light on the situation, sorry it may not be the news you wanted!

All the best.

Hi,
Not sure if this is an XP problem or possibley something else but here we g ,

When wanting to open multiple images i used to be able to highlight as many as i wish and click open , these would then open in Photoshop.
In the last couple of months i have not used PS much but i now seem unable to open multiple images in one go.
If i click individual's they all open but more then a single and it just sits there doing nothing.
Is this an XP problem, if so any ideas on how to resolve ?

EDIT : Also i am unable to open multiple Word Documents, yet i CAN open multiple MPG's .
Thanks

A:Unable to open Multiple Files at once

I have been all over the net trying to find an answer to this one.

I found an article on Microsoft's website (article 253788) that deals with
this for Win 98 but there is no info for WinXP.

Then I found this:
1.Open Regedit
2.Navigate to HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\
3.Delete the Bags & BagMRU keys
Explorer should be back to normal then.
[Updated]
If you did the above and it doesn't work, try killing the Explorer process first and then run RegEdit.exe from Taskmgr to delete the keys. Reboot your system after that.

Disclaimer: Don't fool with the registry if you're not sure.

Isn't there something simpler like clicking a box ?

I had a failure with my USB, one day it was fine, and the next it was saying that I had to format it (but in doing so I would loose all files). I've recovered all files using File Scavenger, however, when checking to see if I can open them, I can't. When I'm in Word and highlight one of the documents, the title does not appear in 'filename', so I double click anyway. Then I get a message 'Microsoft Word can't import specified format. The feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?' - if I say 'yes' then the next dialogue box is requesting for the Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 disc - which I do not have. Please am getting desperate; I can get hold of a disc but it's going to take a couple of weeks, please can anyone assist? and is this the actual solution I'm asking myself???

A:help needed - unable to open recovered files

I am presuming these are Microsoft Word documents and that they opened up on your computer in Word before the trouble started?

If so the reason they do not open now is because they are corrupt and Word is trying to open it. Not recognizing the encoding it is trying to install a converter from your CD.
This however will probably also not work.

You can always test your document by opening it online here http://www.viewdocsonline.com/
Just upload one of your documents and view it online.

If it opens online then we know there is something wrong with your MS Office/MS Word
If it does not open properly online we know it is corrupt.

The following is the scenario.

Have a pdf file that is generated by Adobe 9 PDF Library.
I have adobe 7 reader on my desktop
I am able to open the file directly from the desktop by double clicking on the pdf file.
If i upload the same file in my web application that runs on Oracle 10g R3, the file dosent open. But i am able to open he files that are uploaded to the application and are made with Adobe PDF maker 7 or 8. Error message is "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired" (Screen shot attached)
OS=Win XP, Java version 1.5, application built using Tapestry, spring and hibernate.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I believe this is a common problem. Wanted to check if there is any workaround for this.

I have just backed up my files from my work PC to an external hard drive as the whole computer was being reformatted. I didn't realise that I had clicked on a setting that encrypts the files and quite a few of them cannot be transfered from the drive back to the computer. How can I solve this problem and decrypt these files so that they work again?

Running windows XP

A:Encrypted files unable to open. Big problem!

Are you sure they are encrypted? If so, they will be showing green in color.
You may just need to Take Ownership of the files, as you have a new install.
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

If they are encrypted, was the previous install ever backed up?
To recover the files without having the encryption key you need these two folders and their contents from the Windows installation that encrypted the files:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Protect\
You also need the password for that user account.

If you don't have that, you'll need a SuperComputer and a few thousand years, or a lot of luck.

Unable to select Microsoft Photos app for .svg file association when using the Open With context menu

So I tried installing ownership context menu to actually access the Microsoft Photos app, which pointed to the directory, C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\

But there is no exe in that folder, and it seems when checking task manager and opening file location of the Microsoft Photos app when it's open, it points to a created folder inside the above folder. So it creates an individual folder each time the application is open.

The option isn't under Settings \ System \ Default Apps \ Choose default application by file type

Again, I run into the same problem without being able to select the application when trying to choose based on the .svg extension.

So there is no way of selecting the Microsoft Photos app to associate with .svg

So I'm kinda out of ideas here, assistance / thoughts appreciated

Cheers

Hi there
With no change to my computer, I am suddenly unable to open picture attachments
when receiving emails through Outlook Express.
I get an error message asking what extension do I want to use? So I go to control panel - folders - extensions only to find that PDF isn't listed. Advice please. Thanks M.

A:Unable open pdf files in Outlook Express help!

PDF is not usually used for pictures, but rather for documents with type, pictures and layout that need to keep the same layout when distributed.

to open PDF you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.
You can get it for free at the adobe website.

Sometimes they are able to be opened if I cose chrome or firefox, but now it wont open no matter what. I didn't really change anything software or hardware wise aside from the windows update.

I have user who created a few ecrypted MS Office docs on the home drive. Instead of using the encrypted folder, the user ecrypted the individual files.

The user is unable to do anything with those encrypted files. Copy, move, unencrypte... none of them works.

The user is running Win XP SP2 and the file server is WS2003 R2 SP1.

I'm running MS Excel 2003 and suddenly this afternoon I can't get a single file to open either directly from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut. And when I try to open Excel via Start-Programs-Excel I briefly see it appear on the monitor but it immediately retreats to the desktop taskbar and I can do no more. When I try to open more Excel files they just hide in the taskbar and cannot be opened.

I have rebooted a couple of times to no avail. Help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Seems like the infection(s) arent completely gone... id try to run the following that you can download here at bleepingcomputer:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
ADWCleaner
Junkware removal tool

after you run those scans, post the logs from them. after posting them, google ESET online scanner and do a scan with that, then post the logs from it. all that may take care of your problem,. but if not, their are many other things we can try

My desktop after a while will not open any programs or files. I would say after 30 min to an hour. I have to reset the computer manually and the whole issue happens again. This doesn't appear to happen in safe mode though. I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains. I run windows 7 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

A:computer unable to open files after a while, ok in safe mode

Hello prerunner97,

You could try a Clean Startup and see if you can determine a startup program you have that is causing the issue.
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You stated "I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains."
Does that mean you found malware, and removed what was found?
If so, maybe there are still some malware problems?
I'm no Malware expert, but there is a SF System Security forum where you could add a thread explaining your issue, and experts there might be able to help you.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with IE7. I have saved some mhtml files on my hard disk and I am unable to open those files. IE7 just throws a error message as "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" when I try to open any of the mhtml files.

I was able to open the same files on Windows XP with IE6.

Any solutions?

A:Unable to Print & Open Files in Word 2007

Hi,What's your Operating System. What size is your drive, how much memory do you have and how much free space is available. What is your printer make and model. What steps have you taken by reference to the first error message?Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the laser printer driver.i) Checked my default printer settings. When you select print, in Word, is your printer shown as the default printer or is it stuck on something else, like NovaPDF, (even though you say you have uninstalled this), capture fax or one of the other 'printers' in the list.As regards the second error message, you may have to reassociate your word documents, to enable youto open them from the folders. As regards system restore, it can be a problem if you are short of hard disk space. Is your Anti-virus scanner up to date and have you run any malware and / or spyware scans recently;you may have picked up some kind of infection.

Whenever I try to open a PDF file I recieve the following message. "a website wants to open web content using this program on your computer" and then it tries to open it up in MS Word which then scrambles the PDF file.

I have Adobe Reader X installed but it does not automatically find it and open it up...

Do I have the wrong type of Adobe reader installed? I have another machine that does that same thing...

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Recently I automatically updated windows, and I must have downloaded an update which blocks some files. I am unable to view or open any picture file (jpeg, png.) Right Click --> Properties states "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer."

I click unblock and I still can't view it.
I tried gpedit.msc, but I have home edition so it isn't installed.

So far I have only noticed picture files, but others may be blocked too.

A:Picture files security - unable to open in any program

This feature was added in Service Pack 2. To unblock a file which was downloaded from another computer do the following:1. Right-click on the file in question.2. Click Properties from the context menu3. In the box that appears, click the Unblock button4. Click OKGeek information:Windows XP SP2 and higher marks files downloaded from another computer with an NTFS named ADS called Zone Identifier. Any file containing this data stream will be blocked. There are several ways to strip a file of this stream. One is mentioned above. Another is to copy the file in question to a drive formatted in another filesystem (FAT32, for example) and then copy it back again. Windows strips out ADS's when copying files to other filesystems that don't support ADS's. Yet another method is to use an ADS editing program to manuall delete the stream.

I have taken ownership of all the files and folders on an old hard drive, but am still unable to access many of these files. When checking in the Security tab, I see myself as the owner with full admin permissions, but still cannot open the files.

Anyone know how to resolve this issue?

Welcome to sevenforums jg,

Since I suspect that your real objective is to be able delete, move, copy the files, then you might want to consider adding "everyone" to the list of Group or User Names, then giving Everyone Full control, then - here comes the kicker - and the step that you might want to check on from you previous takeownership, etc efforts.

Close the Security tab. Reopen the Security tab. Click on Everyone.
click on Advanced. Click on "Change Permissions" (whoa, you say-I've already done that-you are in for a surprise). Click on "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object".
Apply buttons all of the way out.

Hello. Recently my father downloaded a Windows update thing that included the newest version of Windows Media Player, and since then I have had trouble getting my preferred media player to work with files. I can still open up it up and select a file, but it is impossible to add it to the "Open with" list, which is annoying. No error messages pop up or anything, but when I go to Browse in the "Open with" window and select the program, it just reverts to the (unchanged) "Open with" window. Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to select a specific program to open files.

Goto My Computer > Folder Options, and click the File Types tab. Find the file extension of the video you're trying to play (avi, mpeg, etc) and click Change.

From there you can select your preferred media player from the program list, or click browse and navigate to the exe of the media player.

Hope that helps.

A:unable to open files which turned in to green color

Hello garywillams

Sounds like they have somehow become encrypted
Right click the file/Properties/Advanced
Uncheck the option to encrypt.

In any event you need to seek help from the Virus Removal forum

First of all you need to try to get the "exe" files to run
Go here
You will haveto follow the instructions under NOTE

Then
Please read ?Virus/Trojan/Spyware Removal Help ? and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information in the Virus Help Forum
If you cannot complete any step, just miss it out and do what you can, but be sure to include this information in your post.
Please ensure that you create a new thread in the Virus Help Forum; not back here in this one.

Please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

On my old Win and Win Vista and Win XP laptops I've had no problems opening and viewing my old MPEG- video files My new laptop running Win will not allow me to view them Windows Media Player will only recognize them as audio files - not video - though the sound will play Real Player is the same - the application will open and begin playing a file but only as audio file I've tried the built in Toshiba media player and MPEG-2 Unable Application Various Video to open Files it shows errors and won't open Unable to open MPEG-2 Video Files Various Application the files at all Again - these are conforming MPEG- NTSC X video file old analog home movies captured using an ATI video card dongle to connect to my video source and an old version of capture application ULead Video Studio These files conform in every way to MPEG- standard format and will run on all of our PC EXCEPT the new one running Win I bought and loaded a video editing application from Corel and it will open and play these files perfectly so why won't Win Media Player and Real Player recognize them when running behind Windows Any and All suggestions very much appreciated

A:Unable to open MPEG-2 Video Files Various Application

According to Wikipedia, the maximum allowed dimensions for an MPEG-2 video are 720x480(NTSC) pixels. It's possible the ULead software driver used to capture this video was not up to spec during recording. As a result it is not correctly recognized by other media players. Since Corel is the parent company for ULead Systems they are most likely aware of this inconsistency and have created software to render the files correctly.

My guess would be that if you re-encode the file(s) using another format the file(s) will play on other media players.
