Favorites List Empty in IE8

Q: Favorites List Empty in IE8

I am running windows 7 Home Premium, ie 8 Version 8.0.7601.17514. My favorites are in Users/Owner and contains all the shortcuts. However when in ie, favorites are empty.

Created a new user, deleted links and favorites from Owner and copied links and favorites from New User to Owner. Still nothing.

Did reverse, copied Links and Favorites that were in Owner to New User, and they appear under New User!

Is there link broken or corrupted file on Owner?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got yet another google updater virus and the fake anti-virus. To get rid of it, what I did is run malwarebytes and norton power eraser in safe mode. Both programs found things to remove. When I got out of safe mode and went into my account, there were only four desktop items (recycle bin, IE, my documents and my computer) and my favorites menu is empty. Please help!

yesterday I made the mistake of downloading and installing windows 8.1, not one of my brightest
moments. now the toolbar, or what ever it's called, not the one that I have set up to hide, the other one
with, among things, is the favorites thing I can click on and it drops down. but now it's sitting off to the right side of
the screen, where I don't want it. how to I put it back where I want it?
and I keep getting this thing popping up on the left side of the screen and it's has some kind of add. it takes several times clicking in the F5 till it stops popping up and I can get the full screen to stay. how do I keep that thing from
popping up in the first place?

My agency recently moved to IE7 and I have a problem with the Favorites list. At the end of the day I close all applications and log out, leaving the computer running. (SOP in our agency.) The next morning, I find the Favorites list has been re-alphabetized. Not a big deal, except that my job has required me to save lots of Favorites and I like to group the most-used near the top for my convenience.

Is there a way to turn off this feature??

A:IE7 Favorites List

The favorites should not change position, mine do not. You may want to install the latestest IE8, which is what I have

In lieu of a better answer from another later on, you can rename. Just put a 1 in front of the one that has priority and 2 in front of the next and so on.

Option 2: Make another folder call it priority( or something), and put all the important favorites in that one. The order should not change.

Since I have gone with the IE7...when I click on "my favorites"..(becaue I want to delete some of them) as soon as I click on one, and delete favorites list closes (I do this from Google) then I have to open it up again and go thru the list to see where I left is such a trivial problem, but it annoys me. I didn't have to do this before...My favorites list stayed open until I was thru and "I" closed it.

What setting or where do I need to make changes.

When doing a big favorites cleanup you are better off to access favorites from its own folder:

My Computer > Cocuments and Settings > your account name > Favorites.

Setting "View" in the menu bar to "Details" makes sorting a bit easier.

I am running Windows XP and just downloaded Earthlink's accelerator. When I did that my "favorites" list disappeared from my task bar above. When I go to Start and go up to Favorites - they are all listed - but I want to be able to access them when I am on the internet by clicking on Favorites above.

How can I import them back to the address bar above?

A:Favorites List

IE has an import / export function. Go to file>import export. The favorites are generally under Documents and settings>user. Try importing them from there.

As a word of advice, all those "accererators" do is store pages on your hd. Any new page will take just as long to load as before.

Copy the following into notepad (or another text editor)

@echo off
dir %1 /-p /o:gn > "%temp%\Listing"
start /w notepad /p "%temp%\Listing"
del "%temp%\Listing"

Save it in your My Documents\Favorites subdirectory as prin.bat

Open your My Documents\Favorites subdirectory in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and double click prin.bat to run it. It will print the contents of your Favorites subdirectory - the list of your favorites - to your default printer.

It will not print the urls, but will print the filename the url is listed as. In most cases this will be adequate for use in a search engine to find the site, since the filename is usually based on the webpage's name.

You can use this program to print the directory listing of any directory. Just move it to the directory you want to print and run it.

When I go to the Start Screen, can see just three apps in pending (I started download of them before) and can't access any other app .
I still can open Settings (from the Action Center) and in Storage/Apps&Games, i can find all of the apps.
I can open the Store, open some installed app's page and click Launch button, and it will launch.
If i update any apps from the Store, they will appear on the app list.
Yesterday i downloaded a new Release Preview build, and some apps came back (Cortana, Settings, ...)
Solutions i tried:
- Downloaded a new keyboard, then soft reset
- Plugged-in an empty SD-Card, moved apps into that, then moving back into device

I am in need of listing all the empty folders on a subfolder. Cmd.exe seems like it would be the perfect route to go.

In the past, I have listed all the files in a directory to a text file.

I am looking to do the same with empty folders, as I need to know if I'm missing audio, video, or pictures, that were supposed to be there. And then replace accordingly.

So something like sending a list of empty folders to a file named empty.txt is along the lines that I'd like.

If anybody can help. Please do.

If you have run a temp cleaner to delete temporary files it will delete the files necessary for unhide to work properly. You may also want to temporarily disable your antivirus software when running unhide and you may need to run it twice.

Yes, you sure could.

Copy and save your C:\Documents and Settings\(UserName)\Favorites folder as a backup.

Copy the contents of the folder above into your C:\Users\(UserName)\Favorites folder.

Any help out there?

A:favorites list hijacker

Hi, Post a log from Hijackthis so we can help.

You must have any items that you have un-checked in anything like msconfig set back to start up when Windows does, put checks back in any items please before you post the log.

There are directions here to do it: There are .zip form and .exe form, take your pick.

Download it here:

Or here.
It's a direct download so be ready with the folder for it.

Basically, you create a new folder, the desktop is OK provided you make a folder, name it something like HJT, and download TO that folder, run hijackthis.exe from there. If there are users of the computer who might start HJT and use it, hide the program in a folder elsewhere!

First open a reply here in your thread to have it ready.
Run Hijackthis.exe, and
Select the "Scan and save a log" button...

When it is done scanning> the Save box will become available, save the log as hijackthis.txt which will open with Notepad. Hit the EDIT> Select All then the EDIT>Copy button at the top of your log, Go back to TSG, and click once in the blank reply space, then go to the top of your browser window and select EDIT>Paste.
Please do NOT use HJT yourself to remove anything, most of what it shows is good and needed by the system

Nothing immoral I want to hide from him, just things I would prefer he not know. I really don't feel like deleting all my favorites. When I click on start - all programs, the list opens, but only three programs are there now. Set program access and defaults, Internet Explorer, and Windows media player.
All other program links are gone. This is very recent, and the only thing that has changed recently is the XP service pack 2 downloaded and installed. I am currently running McAffee 2004

I just purchased a Dell Optiplex SX 260 and it came installed with ubuntu. I reformatted and installed Windows XP Pro on it. I attempted to connect to the internet and it was unable to. I navigated to the Network Connections Page and there were no networks listed there. I had plugged an ethernet cable straight into the computer pre-installation, but it wont detect a network. Help!

Thank you!

Check in Device Manager for missing drivers. Best to get from Dell's web site the chipset (install first), networking and any other drivers needed.

After installing IE 7.0 on one of my computers, I am no longer able to click on one of my favorites and move it up or down the list where I would like it. When I click on it, it immediately launches the URL and takes me to the site. I have to go into "Organize Favorites" to make a change in the order in which it appears on my list. With the rest of my computers, I simply click and hold on the favorite and can move it to any position I want on the list. Is there some way to change my settings so I can do this?

A:Internet Explorer 7.0 - Favorites List

Works for me, the fact that you are launching the website suggests that you may be releasing the bouse, you need to click on the folder, keep it "clicked down" while you move the mouse up or down to relocate it.

Mind you my IE7 is part of Vista, but it worked under XP as well from memory.

Is there any simple way to do this? Thanks...Edit: Moved topic from General Chat to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

A:Moving "favorites" list from old comp to new.

I'm going to assume by 'favorites' you mean web browser bookmarks. If in fact that is what you mean, which browser do you need to export them from? Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or another browser? Knowing which browser and version will help us give you precise information.

This is embarrassing! Somehow, my list of "Favorites/Bookmarks" (Vista/Explorer 8)went to listed in order by when it was entered to an alphabetized order- don't know how it changed, but I just want to get the list back to original based on WHEN the item was listed alpha, not A, B, C order- I have looked everywhere and can't find a way to get the list back to the way it was- PLEASE! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

dear all,
I am using IE7.the problem is when ii enter the url in adress bar it is working fine like
when i type this it is adding # at the end of the url and is working fine.

i add this to favorites list and i open from favorites list it is giving the error

Internet Explorer can not open the Internet site http://abcd:9080//abcd//af.html. operation aborted.

why is this happening the url in adress bar is same when i open from url but not working in this case.

this html page is with swf file.
how can i solve this issue.

A:Problem in opening url from favorites list

Your URL is phrased wrong for opening WEB pages. the double-/ is ONLY after http:

BUT the URL does NOT look like it is meant to open a WEB page. It looks more like some CD download, or streaming, or something like that. Meant to be opened by a player.

I cannot get that page no matter how I use it from my IE6, all I get is the infamous Page Not Found.

I would like to send my i.e. favorites from my home computer to my computer at work, but don't have a clue how to do this. Is there an easy way to do this? I am not very experienced. Thank you!

A:Favorites List to Computer at Work

easiest is probably copy and paste them in an email to yourself. open the email at work and there you go.

if you have too many. you could always export them to your desktop, burn them to a cd and carry that with you.

copy and paste instructions.

export favs to desktop.

3) Backing up your Internet Favorites/Bookmarks.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click File - Import and Export. Follow the wizard and choose Export Favorites save it to a location you'll remember (probably you’re Back Up Files folder).
3. This will create a file called bookmark.htm. Burn this to CD with the rest of your files.
4. Open Internet Explorer on your new computer/after your computer has been wiped.
5. Click File - Import - Export. Follow the wizard and choose Import Favorites from where you saved it.

When I go to bcdedit, there are no entries at all.
When I go to msconfig, then to the boot tab, there are also no entries at all.

I want to alter the boot settings (setting the amount of memory lower (dont ask)), but I cant find windows 7 in any boot related program...

Where to I edit the boot options of windows 7?

A:bcdedit list is empty? -- How to edit startup?

You seem to be having a problem displaying the bcd entries for the correct store.

Did you try opening an elevated command prompt and typing:

bcdedit /enum /v

then press enter.

You could also d/l the free Easybcd - see if that displays the entries:

Download EasyBCD 1.7.2 - NeoSmart Technologies

Click the Download link at the bottom of the page.

On second thought - as you seem to be examining the wrong bcd - you might try the beta version and load up the bcd store from the System partition .

Any idea how you came to switch the bcd store you were trying to view?

This machine has several problems, some of which may be beyond malware.

Please explain why this computer has no antivirus program installed and running. This is an open invitation for infection.

It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

Please keep this computer offline except when downloading tools and posting in the forum until we get one installed. Let me know your intentions for an antivirus program.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan/rootkit.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please refer to Microsoft's Online Safety article for tips on creating a strong password.

Do not change passwords or do any transactions from the infected computer until it has been cleaned.

Please try running gmer in Safe Mode: Restart your computer.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start pressing the F8 key.
In some systems, this may be the F5 key.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press 'Enter'.

Dear all,

After upgrading Windows 8.1 I have a problem with my Region settings.
When going to Control Panel\Clock, Language and Region\Region > Format, I see that the drop-down list is empty, with only one exception: Spanish (Latin America).
I have refreshed my Operating System twice and re-install Windows 8, but after some updates, the system brings back this problem. This is particularly frustrating since I'm using an application that works directly with these settings (a translation memory).
I've tried installing languages packs but it does not work.

Is anybody else having this problem?
Do you know where this comes from?

If you do, I would be very grateful if you could help me out.

Thanks everybody for your time.

Just curious if this is unique to me or if others see this, and/or if it is a known bug.

I oftentimes will use the top sites list to click on a webpage, I click on a new tab and that list is populated with the 8 most used sites I go to. Oftentimes, I will click on a new tab and suddenly the list is totally blank. I can close Edge out, reopen it, and it is populated once again.

Does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to it, seems to be totally random when it happens. And when it does, only way to get them back is to close Edge out and reopen it.

Hello, my superhandy program list is empty after a malware attack on my pc. The malware is gone. But left my program list from the Start button empty afterwards. It has folders in it, but gives (empty) when i click on them instead of the shortcuts to programs. Even my calculator is gone!
Luckily all programs are still there on my harddisk. So only the program list got hurt.

Is there a way to restore this list? Or do I have to do this manually?

I actually don't know where my calculator is located ..

A:Program list empty after malware, how to restore?

My best guess is that the installed software list is stored somehow in the registry (which is an esential piece of every windows determining all of the settings and functions)

If the virus damaged the registry, there is only one possibility to restore it.
System restore, Type this into Start menu then hit enter. A windows will come up and tell u if you have any restore points from the past.

Goooooooood luck

Since some of the data is dynamic you may not be able to save it all. You could Bookmark it, add to Favorites but that may be only a link to that particular page. I like to use PrintScrn and Paste into Paint and save that as an image, more of a record for reviewing later.

My new one has a memory key and a cd/DVD rw; my old one didn't. I tried to download software to my old computer so I could use a memory key but was unsuccessful.
Is there a solution to my dilemma short of buying a floppy drive for my new Dell? Thanking you all in advance. Aloha

If you didn't back it up before taking it in, it's most likely gone. You should discuss it with the "computer service".

Hi all Some time ago I backed up my Favorites List on a CD Yesterday I dragged and dropped this folder to C 'My Name' Favorites and it replaced the one that was there Then I discovered I was unable to when Favorites List to Error' adding 'Unspecified IE8 add urls to my Internet Explorer Favorites List I get quot unspecified error quot After much useless fooling around I was unable to recover the original Favorites folder To make matters worse I then went to C Programs and opened the IE8 'Unspecified Error' when adding to Favorites List Internet Explorer folder I don't have a clue as to IE8 'Unspecified Error' when adding to Favorites List what the heck I did but now I have an 'extra' Internet Explorer Folder that looks like this quot Internet Explorer quot with nothing in it but a folder and 'Favorites' To top IE8 'Unspecified Error' when adding to Favorites List it off I also have the very same folder in 'Internet Explorer ' I tried to delete the Internet Explorer that appears as quot Internet Explorer quot but it keeps coming back I even took Ownership and that didn't help I don't even know if that second folder is even supposed to be there Is there any way to get this thing back to normal Thanks for looking Jakeman

I have a 32-bit system and only one Program Files folder. In x64 there may be two to separate 32-bit from 64-bit programs, but to be honest I'm not sure about that. I AM sure you shouldn't have three and that at least one or possibly two of those should not be there. I do not know what you did to cause this - probably moving the Favorites folder the way you did since shell folders (like Favorites - the ones that have a greenish color to the folder icon) need to be moved in a special way and can't be moved like other folders (but while I would expect Favorites to then be a problem, this duplication of Program Files is a bit of a surprise). The thing is, just deleting them (if you can determine which are wrong) may cause problems because for one you're not certain which is the "real" one and which are the duplicates or incorrect ones and for two deleting one can sometimes result in deleting entries in all when this type of thing happens - and that would be bad (as you'd be deleting your program files). Let's try the simplest solution first - this usually repairs problems of this nature and is one of my favorite and most effective troubleshooting tools.

Do you know when this problem began (sounds like you do when you did what you did)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began (and maybe give it a few hours or a day to be sure). Here's the procedure: Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points (though since it just happened, that may not be necessary). If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. This will not affect your data.

When that is done, check out your favorites and make sure they are working right. Then if you need to move the Favorites shell folder (it will be greenish rather than they normal beige color or at least it should be - there may be a problem with it at this point though so that may not be the case at this point), use the following: Personal User Shell Folders - Move Location. If you need to restore the Favorites folder, see Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder. If the shell folder is beige instead of green, see the following to repair that problem: Personal User Shell Folders. I'm not quite sure what you did so I'm not quite sure how to provide specific instructions, but these three articles should get things back to normal - perhaps just one of them or maybe all of them depending on what you did in terms of the Favorites Folder in the first place and then what you did to return things back to the default situation. If you get stuck, post back with more details on EXACTLY what you did and the color of the folder icons in each location and where new favorites are being added (most likely only one of the locations - I hope).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I uninstalled a program, but it is still listed in the Vista Start Menu Search results. It says the folder is on the desktop but attempts to drag it from the Search list to the Recycle Bin do not work because a message says the folder is not on the desktop to begin with. Any ideas??? Thanks.

try doing a full system clean up, them go into ur start up folder and deleating anyicon there. you could always go into Start\run\msconfig, look in the startup tab and see if there is any residual programm hanging around in there. if there is, try a registry clean

Our web sites are set up to require client certificates & we have a certificate authority running on Windows 2003 SP2. I downloaded & installed the patch (WindowsServer2003-KB922706-v7-x86-ENU.exe) to allow the server to issue certificates to Vista. I then requested, issued & installed the certificate on a Vista PC. I can see it in certificate manager & everything about the certificate is ok. It's purpose is "Proves your identity to a remote computer". But when I try to connect to the site, IE7 pops up "Choose a Digital Certificate " with an empty list.

There is no problem on XP PC's. We have had to tell our customers for over a year now that they can't use Vista! I hoped the patch for the certificate authority server would finally sort this out.

Any help appreciated!

In Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, the recent documents list is always empty, despite opening/closing various files. The number of documents to display is set to 17 (I set it to 8 but it never saves it...). Is it possible that I had recent documents turned off in Office 2003 and it has affected the setting in 2007 ?

I need some help please. I am running Windows XP Pro.
Yesterday when checking my Blocked Senders List in OE, which did have lots of entries, I found it empty.
I then put some new entries in, then later shut the computer down; this morning no entries in the Blocked Senders List again.

Can someone tell me whether my list is hidden somewhere
or how do I get it up and running again properly.

I have run a check on cookies and viruses and all is clear.
I use Ad-Aware, Avast and CCleaner.

With thanks,

You may have a damaged registry key. Open your
registry editor (Start / Run / regedit) to the following

+Outlook Express
+Block Senders

Make sure that Outlook Express is closed, then highlight
the 'Blocked Senders' key and delete it.

Reopen OE and try to set a new block.

I am using Windows XP with SP2 and all the latest updates from Microsoft. Everything worked fine until about a week ago when my machine started to slow and use high CPU usage even though Task manager slowed the idle process at over 95%.

I have scanned for viruses, found and removed TR/DLdr.Agent.bdr.39

I am now left with 2 issues, which hopefully someone can assist me with ? thanks in advance.

In Internet Explorer 8, click in the menu on Favorites, then right click on the favorites list and select "sort by name". The favorites list disappear (instead of displaying it in the new sorted order). In IE7 it worked properly (the favorites list didn't disappear, instead displayed the favorites in the new sorted order). Anybody having a hint how to fix that wrong behaviour in IE8?

Title says it all The list country list in phone/modem options is empty on my installation of XP Pro. I've done alot of google searching & came across a Microsoft KB article (which had been removed) but later found out it's contents. It listed the solution as setting the telephony service to manual.

On my machine that was already the case so no luck Tried restarting the service etc with no effect.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this. This installation is only a few weeks old, so it's very frustrating to see problems already.

IF you are willing to do a full CLEAN OEM reinstall -which may solve your problem as well as get rid of any HP bloatware THEN go to the Tutorials and you will find Gregrocker's excellent article. You can download an ISO of your version of Windows 7 from Digital River and it will work with the Key on the bottom of your G6. You may want to get all of the drivers for this machine from HP's site first, btw.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Doing this will wipe the hard drive and you can also create a simgle partition rather than keep the HP hidden one.
Good luck

I have been asked to provide a co-worker with many links presently organized in my Folders Center within several different named Folders (and subfolders) within my IE Explorer~Favorites.

Yes I can individually select each 'Favorite' folder, drill down to each link which I have named as per MY mental tag: and then copy the links individually to some other form , or worse yet sending several dozen links individually by email.

I would prefer to locate and copy whatever database or location these reside- and bulk copy (export to a spreadsheet or word format) so that rename certain items in a manner which might make more sense to other users - then post to a shared drive for future reference by the entire department.

Surely this stuff exists someplace as a DB or file within the Favorites Center under headings
1: named folder,
2: Sub-folder name
2: renamed 'tag' and
3: actual URL link.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

A:Viewing Favorites links _not_ 'names' in list format

Is there any way to include Windows Explorer Favorites in a VBA folder selection list?

I have tried the BrowseForFolder function, but can find no way in BrowseForFolder to support the "Windows Explorer" Favorites list. The Favorites accessed by using BrowseForFolder option 6:
BrowseForFolder(0, "Please choose a folder", 0, 6)
is not the same list. I think that is the Internet Explorer Favorites, not the Windows Explorer Favorites.

Thanks to those who looked at my previous post. Since I had no response, I have simplified the question. Thanks for any help you can provide.
