Preferred Solution: hOW TO RECOGNISE WHICH IS THE DEFAULT BROWSER?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: hOW TO RECOGNISE WHICH IS THE DEFAULT BROWSER?

I use one very simple method. Close all open browsers. Then write some url address like that and hit enter
Whatever browser open it - thats the default one. If its not the one that you want to be default then fix the settings in the desired one

Could use some help on how to allow a user to our default own default as still user browser in Explorer the allowing and to their set Internet Windows 10 Keeping set their default browser permanently even with IE being set via Group Policy as the usual default For logistical reasons we are still on IE instead of using Edge for our default browser Keeping Internet Explorer as our default browser in Windows 10 and still allowing the user to set their own default - mostly because our software hasn't been tested with Edge and to avoid overall confusion in having made the jump as a company to Windows recently I successfully created a default configuration associations xml file and it is pushing IE as the default However knowing we have some users who would like to use a browser other than IE and let it be their default we're trying to accommodate them while still enforcing the policy in place Additionally we don't want to dissuade users from utilizing Edge so we Keeping Internet Explorer as our default browser in Windows 10 and still allowing the user to set their own default haven't tried removing it from public visibility within the OS nbsp The users in question are local admins on Keeping Internet Explorer as our default browser in Windows 10 and still allowing the user to set their own default their machines and should in theory be allowed that capability Any suggestions

I want to do this for added extra security for my light virtualization setup, and just for the heck of it.

I have this issue where the default browser is opened randomly, and when I try typing in the browser search it keeps getting refreshed endlessly. I ran AVG internet security 2014, AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool, but the issue still exists. I would appreciate some support on this.

Recently installed the latest version of Avant browser. I have set it not to be my default browser or to check if it is default on start up. I have Firefox set as my default browser and to check if it is on start up. The problem is every time I launch Avant and use it it makes itself the default browser. I know this because when I launch Firefox it says it's not the default and also if I wan to set it as the default. I do and when I use Avant again it steals the default browser setting again. I asked about this on the Avant forum and nobody has a solution. Most people on the Avant forum use that browser as their default so they don't care if it makes itself default. Any suggestions on how to stop this? I find this behaviour from a browser to be malware like.

Looks like with portable browsers, you will have to manually set the path.

Try this
Go to search and type windows features turn on and off
boot
Untick IE, I guess its 9

This morning, as part of my maintenance routine, I ran Windows Update and RegCleaner.

Later, when reading E-mail, every link launched IE. I checked FF, Tools, Options, General for default browser and was assured that FF was default.

That was FF 1.5.0.0.11. I downloaded FF 2.0.0.3. Went to Add/Remove to remove FF 1.5. Task Mgr. opened, but nothing there, i.e., nothing running or not running.

Pushed big button on computer to shut down.

How do I stop IE from launching? bob j (DoctorJ)

You can set the default browser and even remove access to IE using "Set Program Access and Defaults". You should be able to find that in your Start Menu or under Add/Remove Programs.

Hi !
You can try following VBS script. It works fine for me. Or you can do .Adm template based on these registry keys.

Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

objShell.RegDelete("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.htm\UserChoice\")

Hi, just wondering if you've successfully changed any other defaults and if so, is this the only one with which you have problems? There are some lengthy threads where people find their defaults revert to MS after restarting.

Sometimes this is found to be due to old versions of other apparently unrelated programs- example Winzip.
File associations revert to Windows default apps on every boot - Windows 10 Forums
(That's a short thread- there's a much longer one near it)

A few weeks ago I changed my web browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox Mozilla. I have Mozilla set as my default browser, but whenever I log onto the web, it will always use Internet Explorer. Also, I have noticed that some items that I have in my Favorites Folder are listed as Internet Explorer and others are Mozilla.

What do I need to do to have Mozilla as my browser in every situation?

A:Default Browser

Not sure what you mean by "log on to the web" but it might be that your ISP requires the use of IE to do the log in. The IE favourites are those you imported, and the Mozilla are those you created/used with FF.
Cheers,
John

By the way, there is an extension for FF (View in IE) that will allow you to click on a link (or click on a page) and view it usinging IExpress. This would allow you, hopefully, to launch FF and then proceed with your login using IE.

I am having a problem setting my default browser. In to reset my defaults in settings. Restore to default. Now Edge is now my default browser. Now I can't set my default browser to Cyberfox or any other browser. I press the cyberfox icon and nothing happens. The plus sign stays on next to the browser icon. I have rebooted a couple of times. Nothing has changed. How can I resolve this problem? I updated to W10 from W7 64bit about three months ago. Thanks in advance.

A:W10 won't allow to set default browser

Have you tried the following 2 methods ?

1. The Win 10 way:
Left click at Start button > Settings > System > left side, click Default Apps > right side, scroll to Web Browser > click the box > do you see Cyberfox in the list > if yes, click it.

2. The old fashioned way:
Right click at Start button > click Control Panel > top right, click View by > click either large or small > click Default Programs > wait for loading > click Set your default programs > left side, do you see your Cyberfox ?
If yes, click it > right side, click set this program as default > click OK when done.

Does any of the above help ?

I have SBC Yahoo!(c)(r) High Speed (yeagh righ) DSL Service. And I wanted to veiw a site in another language, so I had to download "korean text display". So I clicked yes and it started to download Internet Explorer 6.0 (c)(r). And i thought, "Well thats stupid, why didn't it just bundle the stupid language package with the 6.0 that came with Yahoo!(c)(r)?". So now my default web browser is Internet Explorer 6.0, and i hate it even more than Yahoo!'s (c)(r) slow speed. So here is the question, how do i switch my default web browser back to the SBC Yahoo!(c)(r) browser?
Thanks in advanced.
P.S. Yes I did get the Korean Text Display plugin with about 10 other language supports, for all thoes who were going to ask. ^_~

I am running Windows XP, have multiple user log on, and am on cable internet. If a user is logged on to the computer, whether surfing the Internet or not, a pop-up window keeps reoccurring. Upon exit of this window the logged on persons web browser default page changes automatically. The sites that the page changes to is either http://www.sicakgece.com/ or http://www.uslanmaz.com/. I have tried Spybot and Ad-aware and continue to have the problem. There must be a file imbedded in my computer someplace. How do I remove it? Attached is the text I get when I right click on the pop-up and choose source. I hope someone can help as my kids and I do not need to see these porn pages.

Hi Guys

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and am slowly getting used to the system. I have one problem in that the default browser is Edge 12.1 and it is not compatible with Trusteer Rapport. I have talked to IBM and they say there are no plans to make it compatible.

I have what might be basic questions. I know how to make google chrome my default browser but how to I change it back to Edge in the future when Trusteer becomes available, and how will making Google my default browser interact with Cortana and other Windows 10 functions?

I was and still am having trouble with Windows Exployer. I can open it, but after opening a couple of pages it logs itself off. This is still happening.

I tried using Firefox instead (now have both loaded) and have it listed as the Default, but I get an Unable To Connect error everytime now. Links try to open in Firefox and will not open.

Questions:
1) Why is Exployer logging off?
2) Why can't I connect with Firefox?
3) Which do feel is better?
4) How do I set up default browser? ( I can't remember how I did it)

Thanks for the help,

I was having problems with IE 5.5 on my Win 2000 SP4 machine, so I (temporarily) changed the default browser to Mozilla. Now, I've fixed the problems I was having with IE by upgrading to version 6 SP1. However, IE is not switching back to the default browser, even though I have the checkbox marked under Internet Options > Programs as to whether Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser.

Any ideas on how to get IE back to the default browser? Thanks!

To make FF your default browser, If you have FF already installed then go to Tools/Options/Advanced/Check to See if Firefox is my Default browser/Check Now.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Sorry for the delay response
Very interesting issue with no other browsers installed it could be Panda switching your search default so it triggers the auto reminder to switch it back in ie

I used Panda briefly but I believe it has setting for search ?
Click on the Gear symbol on the top right and Manage add-ons,
On the top left column toolbars and extensions section,
And on the bottom left switch to Show all add-ons
Post a screen shot of this page,

Also check the search providers section too and report back
Cheers.

I think I already know the answer but I wanted to know if there is a way to keep/launch ModernIE if you make something other than IE your default browser?

Although it has a mess for favorites I do like the simplicity of ModernIE and often prefer to browse using it from the Start screen. However, it does suffer from some rendering issues and sometimes I need to "view on desktop". I often find if ModernIE has rendering issues, so too will IE10. I would prefer that my default desktop browser be Firefox. When I set Firefox to my default, it kills any access to Modern IE and any IE icon leads to the desktop.

So is there no way to keep ModernIE as a browser if you have a different default browser? It isn't that I don't like ModernIE, I just want it as a secondary browser instead of my default.

A:Any way to keep Modern IE with another default browser?

Hello esspee,

Sorry, but no. Internet Explorer must be kept set as the default program to have the Metro IE10.

If it helps, you could switch to IE10 desktop mode from within IE10 Metro at anytime.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ktop-view.html
In addition, you can also set links to open to either IE10 desktop or Metro mode.

Hi all

I have a problem with my internet explorer in which osme sites dont work. Have tried numerous posts about it but no one seems to be able to solve the problem!

I have been on the program access and defaults section on my laptop and changed AOL to my default browser, but this seems to have no effect on msn or my mcafee!

Hope someone can help me!

Thanks

A:How can i make AOL my default browser?

There is a long explanation to your problem, to fully describe it. However, so that I don't confuse myself and then spread that to you. I'll make it short. AOL is not a browser. AOL is a service provider that has a "branded" browser included. That being said, the browser with the brand of AOL is in all actuality IE. So when you set AOL as default, you get IE. Hopefully I haven't confused you with that explanation.

Which browser are you switching to?If you're switching to FireFox, to make that your default, go to Tools>Options>Main TabOn the bottom of the window, there's a default settings and check the box to make sure that it checks to keep FireFox the default browser. Then click on the button next to it, "Check Now".If you're wanting to make sure IE is your default, if you've used FF at all, make sure that box is unchecked and open the IE browser. Click Tools>Internet Options>Programs TabAbout 2/3 of the way down, there is a box to check and then click on "Make Default". If there's another browser you are looking to make your default, let me know. Good luck!

I'm trying to help an elderly friend solve a problem She has a PC with WIN XP and is using AOL as her ISP and browser I am helping her only via phone and am not very familiar with the AOL browser interface thus I can't see what she sees and I am limited in how well I can assist I can't guide her to an icon on her toolbar since Changing in AOL browser default I can't visualize it She is a bright lady but vision impaired and still intimidated by her computer We spent hours today trying to find a way for her to change her default browser from AOL to IE We spent most of that time on the AOL Help website which by the way appears to Changing default browser in AOL be an oxymoron AOL Help does not offer help they offer only mysteries and frustration especially when you are trying to choose something other than their own product I found many clear instructions on how to change default browser from anything else to AOL I found utter frustration in finding a way to change from AOL to IE Can anyone help me BTW I've verified that my friend has IE installed TYVM bobK

A:Changing default browser in AOL

Try this
click start
control panel
internet options (need to be in Classic View to see it)
choose the program tab at the top
under Default Web Browser it should say Internet Explorer is not currently the default web browser, next to it should be a button saying Make Default. Click it
click Apply

If your friend is using AOL as her ISP provider though, I believe she will still need to sign on though AOL before being able to use IE to surf the internet.

Hello all I need some help.

This week the computer started launching chrome by itself in random intervals. At first I thought it might be a keyboard problem because I noticed the volume control was no longer working instead it was launching the browser. But then it started launching by itself without any prompts. I uninstalled chrome to reinstall and then IE began launching, I consciously changed it to Firefox and it started launching as well. Now it periodically launches whichever is default and if I use the browser it keeps sending me to the home page. I tried Restoring the system to an earlier point but it did nothing. I ran scans and nothing shows infected or suspicious.

Help?

**Update**
I accidentally ended the windows explorer process, this process seems to be affected because now I am able to use apps without the browsers acting up. Still, would love not to operate using the task manager.

A:Change Default Web Browser

I am sure someone will come along with a Registry fix for you, but if I were you I would program it into the install of the software to make it the default browser or have an option in the software to make it the default browser. Mozilla and Opera both do this.

I am kind of suprised that your programmers dont know how to do this.

We have Windows 10 Pro on a laptop.  We want to set the default browser to Internet Explorer 11 (rather than the default, Edge).  I am familiar with the process of setting "Default apps" in Settings/System in Win 10.  When I choose
"Web browser," I see Internet Explorer as an option.  When I choose IE by clicking on it in the "Choose an app" window, the change does not occur.  The Default apps screen still shows Microsoft Edge as the default browser.
I should note that the same thing happens when I try to select "Outlook 2016" as the default email program on this screen (nothing changes).
Thanks for any help you can offer with this frustrating problem.

If Edge must take precedence how can I have IE open at start up?

A:Default Browser - EI11

First you will need to see IE brought back from the dead of course and then simply go into the 10 "Start menu>Settings>System>Default apps" where you scroll down to the Web browser option to see IE11 set as the default. Since Edge will be forefront when first arriving after IE is back working for you you simply click on the rectangular box as the lines will appear and browse through the list of browsers if you have others installed or simply see IE on the spot to select that instead.

Since IE11 is still a feature but disabled and not in plain sight you will want to review the guide for this in order to get IE back up and running in Option Two. Internet Explorer - Install or Uninstall in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

How can I chang my default browser?

A:How can I change my default browser?

Hello thefabe,

Usually during installation of the 3rd party party browser (ex: Firefox), you will have the option to make it the default program.

If not, then you can also select it in Default Programs to make it the default browser. The program itself will usually have it's own settings that you can select to make it default as well.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

A:Setting Default Browser

In Firefox, go to Tools, then Options, then to the Main tab. At the bottom of the Main tab is a check box to see if Firefox is the default browser. Check that.

Then open up IE and navigate to Tools, then Internet Options, then the Programs tab. And uncheck the box that tell it to notify you if it's not the default.

Hi there,
I would like to set Windows or firefox default Browser for all my user by script or registry. Does anyone here can help me with that?
That.

A:How to set IE as default browser for all user

I am afraid that there is no elegant solution for that.

So, if we are talking about one computer with multiple users, you would have to create a snapshot of registry when a browser sets itself as a default (there are couple dozen settings get changed) with registry monitoring software (some uninstallers, regmon, etc.).

When you would have this REG file ready you can inject these settings into other users’ registries by standard command
REGEDIT.EXE /R:user importfile.REG
where "user" is location of the ntuser.dat of a particular user.

Or you could inject the ie setting, which checks whether the ie is a default browser or not. But that would be up to user - actually make it default or not.

If you have one computer with couple users on it, I think you would be better off doing it manually for each one.

Have a WinXP MediaCenter 2002 computer that launches "only" the default browser (IE, Firefox, etc...) and starts popping up multiple tabs until the browser crashes (Doesn't matter whether the browser is open or not). I have run all forms of detection utilities (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, Counterspy, McAfee Stinger, etc..., tried Rootkit Revealer, Rootkit Hook Analyzer). Nothing seems to detect this infection! I've performed sfc /scannow, uninstalled and reinstalled SP3 and have to tip my hat to whomever programmed this one! I thought. I was an expert at virus/spyware/malware removal, but this one has me stumped! I've attacged the hijackthis log and hope someone can help or has encountered the same problem.

A:Default Browser Keeps Changing

There are several issues that could be the problem here. The first one is: You must be on your administrator account to make Firefox your default browser. Another method of making Firefox your Default Browser is to do the following: Open up your control panel, launch the Add/Remove Program, click on the Set Program Default and Access tab, select the Custom Tab, Under your default Web Browser, select Mozilla Firefox, and then click Ok.

Now click on the tab Main, then underneath System Defaults, tick the box that says "Always check that firefox is the default browser on start up", now click on the button Check now. This should now have Firefox as your default.

I want to replace Comcast.net with Firefox as my default browser. I have followed the instructions on Firefox but neither of them worked. First, I tried doing it via Tools, Options, Main Panel, etc. Then I tried to do it in Control Panel: Add/Remove Programs, Set Program Access, Choose default browser. I clicked OK or Apply (which ever one is on that screen).

I shut down the computer to see if that would help but it didn't make any change. I still cannot make Firefox as my default browser.

What should I try next ?

type default into your start-menu search-box.

select 'default programs'...

...et voil?.

then uninstall ie9 from the control panel, i suppose.

i would keep ie8, though.

Getting Frustrated!. I was running IE11 but now running IE9!. I cannot get any version of IE to remain as the default browser. Everytime I open IE I get the request to set IE as the default browser - it never remauns as the default. There are no other broswers installed. As stated, I've reverted to IE9 and on every downsize I've downloaded, from Microsofts own site, the relevant IE version - IE11, IE10 and IE9 to perform a re-install. Every time this fails because it says I've a later version of whatever version installed!. This implies those on Microsofts download website are not the latest versions - why do they bother!

I now assume there is a regustry error/corruption. Really appreciate help in resolving and getting IE to remain default browser.

A:Browser won't remain as default

Hi,
Did you Uninstall another browser ?
I would imagine you might be referring to default search and not default browser,
Open ie and use Alt+TA or Gear symbol and Manage add-ons,
Go to the Search providers section on the left column and see what's listed,
Also go to the Toolbars and extensions section,
On the bottom left change the view option to Show All add-ons,
Post a screen shot of both sections if you want to but the Toolbars... is what I'm most interested in,

I'm hoping somebody can help me with the right code for the script I'm trying to make. I've seen countless ways to make IE and firefox default browser's but none for chrome. I'm specifically trying to find the right code for a VBS script and not a BAT file. Can anybody help me out with this? Thank you.

Greetings bigtij and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far.Unfortunately there is evidence of illegal software on your computer. I am going to request you completely uninstall Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 and all other products for which you do not have a valid Product Key. If you are willing to do that please rerun a FRST scan with Addition.txt and post both logs. If you prefer to leave the programs on your computer let me know that and I will be closing the Topic.

Firefox has always been my default browser but today I started it and for no apparent reason it says it's no longer the default browser so I reconfigure it as default, but whenever I close FF and relaunch it it says again it's not the default browser.

Help please.

A:Problem with default browser

Hello Read Only,

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Firefox is set as the default program with all of it's defaults (associations) set for it as well. Afterwards, see if Firefox is still says that.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
