Firefox and Java

Q: Firefox and Java

I have Firefox 6 installed on my Laptop and Desktop. Both running Win 7 Home. On the Desktop, I Java 6 installed. On the Laptop, no Java according to 'Program and Features'. Nor does it have any Java plugins. Yet, the Laptop behaves just like the Desktop when I visit the same sites I visit on the Desktop. I'm almost sure at least one of those sites have Java applets.

Why is the Laptop able to do Java in the above circumstances? I must be missing something here.

Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I tried to get help in the HijackThis Log Help forum but was told to come here instead. My problem is my java when you FF will freeze up and become unresponsive. sometime it takes several minutes to come back or it wont at all. The java console does not seem to be working either. It will come up but I don't get any information like I do in IE. I tried to fix as they thought the solution was in their forums but came up empty. I am running the new FF 3.0 with the latest java. I even tried their beta version of java 6.0 update 10.

Hi all,

Just updated to Firefox 4 on my MacBook and everything seems to be fine except that Java isn't working! The Java installed does seem to be latest one (did a software update to be sure but problem still there) and also when I open the same website using Safari it works perfectly. In Firefox though I get told that I need to download the plugin; I follow the step but the window says "No suitable plug-ins were found".

I looked at the Add-ons that are installed in Firefox and I have Java Plug-In 2 for NPAPI Browsers 13.4.0.. This is enabled (tried disabling and then enabling again but still nothing).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

My MacBook specs just in case are the following:
Mac OS X Version 10.6.7
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Java 13.4.0

If anything else is required please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Jane

I have a problem on my desktop running XP home SP3. I have Java 6 update 21,Java 6 update 5, Java SE runtime environment and Java Console 6.0.05 loaded. When on the 'net, any reference to Java instantly terminates any active browser with no error message. Example: go to Java.com, click on "Free Java Downloads" and bang! out of browser and back on desktop.???? Because of this I'm unable to further update or download any other versions of Java, nor can I use any ap which uses Java. What to do?

I recently installed FF 3.6 and upgraded Java to 6 Update 18. I can use Java just fine in IE. If I goto a java page in FF, Windows tells me "Java has stopped working" and FF becomes unresponsive and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to close it. I've read a lot of forums that FF3.6 has to run Java 6 u10 or later, which I am doing. I also did a full system scan to see if there's any older Java leftovers out there. I'm baffled and I cannot find an error log in Java. Running Vista SP2

Since updating the other day to Firefox and the latest Java v u my I in need What Java for do Firefox. browser has been intermittently crashing I read on Google that this could be caused by one or both of the Java Plugins I wondered is it ok if I disabled them as a test to see if it stops Firefox crashing or does the browser need Java to operate As add-ons I use No-Scripts Ad-Block Plus WOT and I also have Download Helper installed As far as plug ins go I have the two mentioned Java ones as well as the Mozilla default plug-in the Shockwave Flash and VLC Mediaplayer plug-ins Otherwise I have the Microsoft DRM and Windows Media Player plug-ins switched off I have cleared the cache and also cleaned out my cookies The only Cookies on my PC are my regularly visited sites Does anybody have an idea on what is causing Firefox to have these crashes All of the above are updated to the latest versions

A:What do I need Java for in Firefox.

With regard to your first question: disabling Java will not affect the browser at all. You will simply get a notice on pages that use Java that "a required plugin was not found." All other pages will work normally.

Hi forum, the title says it all...

I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, since there isn't an official 64-bit Firefox (or i can't find it) i've installed the 32-bit version (the one on the official website)

Now i have a question... which Java should i install? the 32-bit one (because of the browser) or the 64-bit one? (because of the OS)

And the Adobe Flash Player/Shockwave Player? which ones? 32-bit or 64-bit?

Thanks in advance, forum.

A:64-bit OS, 32-bit Firefox, which Java do i need?

The 32 bit java is all you need for the 32 bit firefox browser. You can install both 32 and 64 bit ones separately, and they will both be in Programs and Features, but it isn't necessary unless you're going to use a 64 bit browser.

Adobe flash is only in 32 bit for Windows. The only 64 bit flash is an experimental one for Linux.

There is a 64 bit Firefox browser, but without Flash, it's hardly worth using it.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Java won't run in IE9 but will run in Firefox and Chrome. When I go to Verify Java Version at Java.com in Firefox and Chrome they return Version 7 Update 9 but the test never returns a result in IE9. I uninstalled and reinstalled Java, Java add-ons are enabled. Security settings look ok.
Some sites return "An add-on for this website failed to run". Same sites in Firefox and Chrome work fine. Java games don't work in IE9 but same games play in Firefox and Chrome.
Any thought on where I can start looking?

Edit:
The site http://www.javatester.org/enabled.html says IE9 can't run Java while it says Firefox and Chrome can run Java.

A:java won't run in IE9, will run in Firefox and Chrome

Have you tried resetting IE9 Go tools in the upper right hand corner of your IE9 browser. Select internet options then the advanced tab down at the bottom click reset then reset again you should get a pop up box that will get three green check marks after that restart IE9 and test your Java. You will have to reset your home page if you do not use MSN as homepage,

Windows XP SP3 on a PC
I've got the latest version of Java installed. Using the test on their site it shows that it is in fact installed. Using the application test for Java on their site shows an error and it doesn't run (I tested it in both IE7 and Firefox.)
I use an online coupon printer and today when I accessed the site through Firefox it said that I needed to install Java (which is already installed) but when I used IE7 it worked.
Everything says that it is enabled - all of the plug-ins and in my control panel.
So it is installed but isn't working properly in the test but I was able to get the coupons to work in IE7.
What am I missing?
Thanks!

If you haven't already tried it, go here;http://www.javatester.org/ with Firefox and try both the 'Java Version' and 'Java Enabled' tests by clicking on the relevant orange buttons.

Both tests are positive in my copy of 3.6.11. If you get a negative response to the 'Enabled' test, see the 'Manual Control' notes in para 2 on that test page.

I had updated Java SUCCESSFULLY, and, as recommended, uninstalled an earlier version, I had 2 of them, but I did just one, then re-checked for Java installation, which had shown success. Well after the uninstall of an earlier Java it said there was no install, this was on Mozilla latest Firefox, on IE9 it says I have the latest Java. Now I checked in FF for updates to the plugins that I have in addons for Java, say they are all updated. What can I do to fix this? I'm on dial-up and I download at 3.7kb a second so it takes a LONG time to update or download anything.

You will have to see the person who is your system administrator as they have obviously placed restrictions on that PC for a good reason. Changing admin permissions requires a password known only to the admin personnel. I can't help you with that.

On Windows 7 I have installed Firefox, and Java is highly uncooperative.

Every time I access a Java application with Firefox, all I get is a black screen. The applets don't even load.

I access these same sites using Opera and everything is fine. But with Firefox, all I get is a black screen.

I could use Opera for everything Java but that's inconvenient and I would like to use Java on Firefox.

What could be responsible for this? I do have Ad-Block Plus installed as an add-on but I doubt it would be the reason behind blocking all Java applications with a black screen. I have also tried clearing cookies, but this does nothing and all Java applications continue to be blacked out.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I am trying to access Sabre and while it works with IE it won't with Firefox which is my default browser. I get either "java applet failed" or java detector applet notintinded". I've tried deleting and reinstalling java. I've even tried downloading an earlier version of java with no luck. I know nothing about computers and am so frustrated trying to resolve this issue. I'm told Firefox is better than IE so should I just go back to using IE? Please help!

A:Java fails to load in Firefox 13

Youtube does not require Java.
It requires the "Flash Player" from Adobe, and also requires that "javascript" be enabled in your web-browser. Javascript has nothing to do with Java, despite the similar-sounding name.

I have had Java disabled on my Firefox, since it was recommended to do so. (that was over a year ago or so)  I got a notice to update Java Runtime Environment.  I did it.  I usually go back and make sure Java still shows disabled on Firefox.  It always has been.  Now I do not see anything in plug ins, under add on manager tab, for Java.  I can call up Java Control Panel.  The box is unticked for Mozilla, but it is showing ticked for IE.  Some places won't be fully seen or usable without Java.  I also have No Script on my Firefox.  Sometimes it is a pain, but it has hopefully helped me.  Any ideas on this?

Hi,

I use Mozilla Firefox as my default browser, and so have not kept Internet Explorer up to date on my Windows XP, as I don't use it.

But with the last update of Firefox (2.0.0.4.) the Java Runtime Environment applet refuses to load. Neither version 5. 12, nor 6.1 seem to be compatible, even though the Firefox help page insists that is it. I keep uninstalling and reinstalling various versions of Java R.E. but still no luck.
Has anyone any ideas, other than finding all the Explorer updates and then using that as a brower?

Ok this is my problem. I play games on Pogo and Facebook and the games freeze up which makes my Firefox to become unresponsive. What causes this to happen? I contacted Pogo and they said there was nothing wrong, but I keep getting Java applet issues with their games and it is quite annoying. What cause Java to become corrupt and what causes it to freeze up games?

Also for some reason for a little while have not been able to open new tabs which is also very annoying what causes this?

A:Help: Windows 7 + Java + Firefox = No Applets

I suggest your use a program like Revo Uninstaller to completely wipe all traces of Java & Firefox from your system. This is a bit dangerous but neccessary. It should include registry entries as well. Install both at the highest uninstall method. Be sure to make a system restore/backup point before hand.

A:Firefox/java security problem

You need to change the settings in your Java Control Panel. To do this:

1) click the apple logo in the top left hand corner of the computer screen, then click system preferences

2) Find and double click on the Java logo. The Java Control Panel should open. If it doesn't, click "Reopen the Java Control Panel"

3) In the Java Control Panel, click the "Security" tab.

4) Click "Edit site list" and add the address of the site that is blocked. Click Okay.

My home machine is running Windows Vista Ultimate. When I first got the computer last year, I had no problems going to any websites that use Java plugins. I think since then, firefox may have been upgraded, and now when I go to websites that use Java (like doing my online banking), Firefox just freezes up.

I think I'm running the latest version of Java on my machine, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions on what I can do to solve this? I prefer to use Firefox than IE for browsing the internet.

Hey guys, I have been having a major head ache with my pc - I have used firefox since day one when I bought my new pc - but in recent months, I have been getting some irritating issues.

Everytime I goto clear my temporary internet files, the program simply refuses to completely clear them and the address toolbar.

Also, I cannot seem to install or update Java, everytime I goto install it, the installer comes up with an error - and renders Java unusable.

Finally...... whenever I use Hotmail....this is a frequent issue.

A:FireFox Java Trojan Redirecting

Okay, I think I've alleviated most of my problem while not entirely ruling out it being completely solved.

I was reading Broni's post "What do do??" on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405780.html

Since my troubles were in Firefox, I followed the Add-on suggestions given. I went into Firefox Safe Mode first and everything worked fine and then I disabled the add-ons. Everything worked after a browser restart. I continued to follow Broni's advice and one by one enabled each one in order to rule out the problem. Well, it appears the three XUL Cache 1.0 Add-ons were causing the redirects so I disabled them and uninstalled them. I couldn't find an option to delete them (is there?).

I went back into normal mode and the only strange thing was that my internet connection was not functional for about five minutes. Even though my modem lights were on I couldn't get IE or FF to load any websites. I also couldn't get MSE to load the updates. But after about five minutes it did come back and worked fine. I even restarted it again and it is seemingly fine.I wonder if this was still the work of the trojan or remnants of it?

I'm not entirely convinced, however, that everything is removed. I mean, I still get the "MOM.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message when getting into normal mode. I wonder if that has anything to do with the trojan? I try not to click on it (just move it out of the way). Is it safe to do so? What do you suspect this error message is all about?

Also, I did find two entries of xul.dll in my search results. One is in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox and the other is in Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging Web Printing\Mozilla Addon 3. I'm not sure if these are related to the XUL Cache 1.0 referenced earlier, or not. Any idea?

Another thing is, earlier today I was able to go to Windows Update and found two high priority updates that needed to be downloaded and installed (KB2518864 and KB2478658). At first they installed but upon downloading they sputtered and gave me an error message about Microsoft Net Services Installation Utility, but after trying again it did work.

Looking forward to communicating with some of the experts on this issue.

Thank you!

I am having Sound Message Issues, No Alert Sound that there is a Message that came in,

so this and when I am chatting the sound does not work, I checked the options and the
Play sound for new messages is on, . .

So I checked my Java update and I have Java 22 Firefox version 3.6.15
I went to Java updates and the Update is 24, . . Should I update ?
Also I did not download the plug in that FB signals at times during Chat use.

I am believing that it is a QuickTime plugin

I did try the Quicktime Alternative and could not get any results I uninstalled it.

Can you tell me do I need the Java 24 and should I D/L QkTm ?

Yes, you should always update Java to prevent malware exploits. Since you missed the Update 23 you will need to go to Add/ Remove programs and uninstall update 22 after installing 24. Assuming you are asking about Facebook Chat, there is a help page to assist you in deciding which chat client and how to install each chat client. Facebook Chat | Facebook

Hello,

I was trying to play a live game on Gamesville and encountered a problem where the screen would say it was loading and the ads would play, but the game never loaded. I ran through their troubleshooting, went into the Java Console and made sure the box was checked to default Java for the Mozilla family of browsers. I also made sure Java and JavaScript were enabled through Firefox. However, every time I hit apply and OK in the Console, when I go back in, the box is unchecked again. It is checked for IE and grayed out so I can't change that. Am I missing a step here? Thank you.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this wasn't a problem a couple days ago while playing games on Pogo. It happened prior to installing SP2 as well, so that didn't cause it. My Pogo games no longer work either. Thanks.

I would uninstall Java: Why should I uninstall older versions of Java from my system? and run without it for a few weeks; if you then use a program that needs it, or a website that you must use that requires Java, install the latest version: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems

If you rarely need Java, before enabling it/starting the program that needs it, check for a Java update: How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? - updates to Java are only scheduled for release every 4 months, plenty of time for the bad guys to find new holes to exploit.

If you do have a program that requires Java, there may be an alternative, hopefully free or Open Source, that you could use instead.

Disabling Java fully in IE has historically been difficult, since Java 7 Update 10, Oracle claim that it can be done using the Java Control Panel applet: How do I disable Java in my web browser? or (Windows only) by using a command-line install argument. Other browsers would also have their Java plugins disabled by these methods too.

Ok, so before I completely give up on firefox, I thhought I'd run this by you guys to see if some one can help me solve this issue:

My firefox browser (ver. 2.0.0.7) is not detecting my Java VM (ver. 1.6.0 - build 1.6.0_03-b05). I ran the Java test on firefox but the test comes up blank (example: http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7210/new1fe1.jpg).
I have Windos XP SP2 (fully updated) and for security, I use NIS 2007.

- I have uninstalled all add-ons for firefox.
- I have tweaked NIS 2007 in order not to block any javascript (It was blocking Flash content for IE7)
- I have uninstalled and re-installed Java VM and firefox several times.
- All works fine in IE7

What have I missed or overlooked ???

Hi everyone Just wanted to share the unpleasant experience I had with the latest Java and the latest Firefox They don't play nice together I downloaded both and right after that my browser started doing Together Don't Java Nice and New Play - Firefox very strange things Primarily it was giving me quot blank quot pages and not downloading sites I have used for years I have Verizon FIOS so I got one of their Techs on with me thinking it was FIOS The short of New Java and Firefox - Don't Play Nice Together it was that it was a compatibility problem between Firefox and Java I also have IE which tipped the Tech off to the problem Works fine there Tried contacting both Java and Firefox and got nowhere Firefox help says to contact plug in manufacturer I couldn't find a way to do that successfully Tried to correct the quot issue quot with the help of several other resources as well Again no luck Long story short I got soooo irritated with this that I restored my system back to Java and Mozilla Firefox could probably use a later Firefox which I'll test and guess what Problems disappeared I read somewhere in my search for help may have been on this Forum that the latest Java no longer supports the compatibility for -bit to -bit That may be the issue Don't know Just wanted to give others a heads up on this in case they experience something similar If someone has found a fix please share If I find a fix I'll do the same Thanks Meltie

A:New Java and Firefox - Don't Play Nice Together

I've had similar reports in my forum which supports a modified version of Firefox.

I recommend avoiding any major release of this browser until all the publishers of add-ons have had time to work out the bugs, not to mention bugs in the browser itself.

I've seen dozens of reports that FF4 has problems. I like FF, but unless you have specific reason to want a new version, give it a few months before switching.

Hey, people, the name pretty much says it all. I'm on Firefox's beta channel so I'm running Firefox 15 (x32)
This information from the Java console (which I've noted other people have problems with but comes up for me just fine) will tell you what versions the bits are of Java:
Java Plug-in 10.5.1.255
Using JRE version 1.7.0_05-b06 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
From the link in the Control Panel: Java Standard Edition Version 7 Update 5 (x32)

Everything about the version of Java I have installed works except the actual function of the script on web pages. When I try the test on the Java website, I get "ClassNotFoundException" when I click for details. Any ideas as to why? My dad suggested downgrading Firefox back to 14 so I might try that if I can't get it to work in 15.

Thanks!

Having just been through a mess with some trojans and reading about the Vundo virus, I decided to update my Java today. But when I try to update to the XPI version of the latest Java, Firefox blocks it. Is there a problem with the download, or do I have a security setting too high on my current Firefox browser? I'm using jre1.4.2 on Windows XP Home Ed.

Thanks for your help!
Update:

Cancel that. I found I AM running 1.5 but my computer only says 1.4.2 Is there a better way to find out which version of a software you have than just doing a search for the program? I've had this happen before that I have more than one version of a program, and only one of them shows up in search.

Thanks again!

I use Firefox 2.0.0.7 as my default browser and have installed Adblock - Adblock Plus and No Scripts as add ons. Sometimes when surfing I get a pop up on certain sites saying that "it appears that you have Java script disabled on this machine" and that it needs to be enabled to view this side. It also says that this could be as my security settings are too high.

I have both the Java boxes ticked in Firefox/Options/Content. Is there a way I can let Java / Javascript work on Firefox?.

Hi,
Our company has recently purchased three of the S500-11C laptops.

One of the software packages we use requires Java to be installed in the browser, this is not a problem in IE or Chrome but we cannot get Java installed on Firefox, which is the main browser we use.

We have tried various different versions of Firefox and Java but nothing seems to work. We have also tried switching off 'Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in' feature in Java but this has not helped. One suggestion was to try moving a couple of files from the /java/bin folder to the /firefox/plugin folder, but this simply caused Firefox to crash when it tried to load applets.

The laptop is fresh out of the box and is running Windows 7 32-bit. I think it might be some sort of conflict between the Toshiba Apps and Firefox.

Has anyone else come across this issue, or provide any assistance?

Thanks

Matt.

I believe the problem seems to be with Java, because I updated java yesterday and the problem is affecting both of my installed web browsers. It seems every time I receive an IM through facebook chat, Firefox crashes. I thought it might have been a quicktime problem due to the fact that I used to get quicktime error messages when recieving IM's through facebook chat, but I have uninstalled quicktime and the problem persists. I have uninstalled all versions of Java, and all browser add-ons related to Java. I have also uninstalled all unneccesary add-ons, and virus scans have shown zero results. I have also had the same problem when surfing the Arizona Diamondbacks website, which seems to rely heavily on Java and Flash. any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!!

A:Solved: Firefox, Java certificate problem

Yippee! I've been able to solve this problem (courtesy of an IT specialist at the finance company issuing the java application). For the sake of those with a similar complaint I will post here what worked for me.

It seems there is a hidden file/folder that ideally should be removed before installing my Java upgrade. Windows then takes the new certificate (or certificate verification details) and asks to install it. Previously, it had assumed that the file(s) already installed were the correct ones and when it tries to open the java application finds a mismatch between the expected certificate (or certificate verification details) and records an error.

So here's what worked for me in Windows XP:

(1) Go to the control panel >>> add/remove programs >>> and uninstall java.
(2) Remain in control panel >>> folder options >>> view >>> and set "show hidden files, folders" to true.
(3) Go to My Computer >>> Local Disk C >>> documents and settings >>> your user name folder (in my case "Damien") >>> Application Data
>>> Look for and delete any "SUN" folder (which will contain a copy of the certificate (or certificate verification details))
>>> Also delete and "JAVA" folder (although there is unlikely to be one).
(4) Click on My Computer >>> go to control panel >>> folder options >>> view >>> and set "show hidden files, folders" to false.
(5) exit and restart computer.
(6) install latest version of java.
(7) Run java application which now should show confirmation that (a) the accompanying certificate has been verified, and (b) request permission to install the certificate and run the application.

This may not work for everybody but it worked for me in this case.

A link here might also be useful to some people if the problem persists:

I was just update on one of my addons in Firefox which brings up the list of addons. I noticed that I have several listed (version 6.0.11- 6.0.21)--- Do I need all those? Or should I uninstall all but the latest?

Your input would be greatly appreciated

Today I tried to go to Facebook, and I got the message that the site doesn't work without java, so I reinstalled java to the latest. I also uninstalled an old version of shockwave flash (it was an addon) I still can't sign into facebook, even after enabling both of them (I get the same message) also video's on youtube will not play (but will in IE)

I tried this- no difference

Right now for my add:on's in firefox the only one with an exclamation point is java deployment toolkit 8.0.510.16 , but I don't know where (I've searched) to get an updated version of this, it says there vulnerabilities.

Hi community, a warm Hello and a Blessed New Year to you all.. Could anyone of you perhaps help me this.. am trapped in this blues in the New Year Day..

In mozilla firfox, how to trap javascript errors on page load, and write the error and url into a text file... is there any solution to this using extensions? how else can it be done? how to use event handlers in mozilla? is that a possible solution, if yes, how to implement... any web links also help..

A:Trapping Java script errors in Mozilla Firefox

Hello nithin1 - There is an extension called Console? that I think should do what you require. It allows you to select all entries (CTRL+A) in the Error Console and copy them to the clipboard for pasting into a text file.

Hi,

I have recently upgraded to XP and am using Mozilla's Firefox browser.

On certain site's when I try to view adverts all I get is a big red box/rectangle.

It's the same when I use IE6, and I have installed Java and ensured the options are set to enable on both this and Javascript.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

Leonardo.

Mozilla Disables Insecure Java Plugin in Firefox.

Mozilla is disabling older versions of the Java Development Toolkit plugin for Firefox users, in a bid to block attacks against a newly-discovered Java security hole that attackers have been exploiting of late to install malicious code.

Note: At most, normal users whom only surf the Internet (web), only need the JRE, and should not install the JDK (Java Development (Tool)Kit) unless they are developing Java code. Additionally, Java should be disabled in your browser (i.e. not JavaScript), but if you use Firefox as your browser ( ), then you should be using the Firefox Add-on, NoScript.

OK. Here's a tidbit I just discovered and learned about Firefox (in general) and the FF Java Console addon (in particular) I thought i'd share

When you look at your Firefox addon extensions (Tools->Addons) under Windows 7 or Vista you may find (see image below)

When you update your Java, old versions of the FF Java Console addons weren?t uninstalled from FF (note I have 2 old versions of Java Console in example below)
The Uninstall button for the FF addon is dimmed! (so you can?t uninstall it!)

Turns out the solution is simple

Close all your FF windows
Now start FF again using rt click to Run as administrator
> Rt click Start->All Programs->Mozzilla Firefox, select Run as administrator
The Uninstall button for the addon should now work!

If you need it, you can install it, but make sure that you disable it and only run it when needed.

A:[Java] New version of Java, Java 8 Update 51 has been released

If you have desktop programs which require java to run then the best thing you can do is disable it's browser functions, this can be done by the method described on the following page, that way java can still run for those who need it as an environment for their desktop programs, but it will not be vulnerable as a browser plugin.
