Lost Sound unexpectedly

Q: Lost Sound unexpectedly

I have lost the sound on my XP machine......not all sound, if I pop in a cd it auto plays with Windows media player, however I cannot hear any sound from the web?

I have checked all drivers and devices in device manager and supposedly all are working correctly......yeah right.......I am at a total loss. I can't to any volume controls (luckily WMP has volume and that can be controlled) or sound mixer of any sort......there was at one time a small speaker icon that I would go to to mute and contrl the sound level and if I double cliked it, a large mixer of sorts would appear.....I have nothing now.

Thnx in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You will have to reinstall your sound driver. What are your computer's specs?

So I use to have ~60gb FREE space on my SSD but then I was experiencing some problems with opening some metro apps so I ran the windows (all in one) fix-it program and luckily enough it did repair my problem although afterward I was only left with ~45gb free space on my 100gb SSD, which is quite strange as I cant find where on earth all this extra data came from and if it is nessercery.

Im not sure if this has anything to do with my problem but their are these partions on my C drive which have no name, which could be causing problems related to availible space?

Attachment 55358

I will provide more information as needed, thanks.

Edit: I have ran the windows disk cleaner to clean both normal and system files plus I run ccleaner on a regular bases.

A:SSD lost space unexpectedly

Try running this TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs and post a picture - it will tell you what is taking the space.

It is not the partitions - it is you C:\ drive - the others are small and are required for booting and recovery so don't worry about them.

OK, yesterday I had just installed [email protected] and after running it for about 10 minutes while surfing my pc unexpectedly restarted itself. I have had a very stable build up until this point (about 7 months since I installed the 4200+ cpu and no problems since). I have checked the Realtek HD drivers and everything looks ok on the software side. I have a sinking feeling that my 3 yr old FIC KTBC51G LF mobo has decided it no longer likes its onboard sound components. Anyways, does anyone else have any ideas as to what I could do to maybe get it working again? Maybe I'll just buy a cheap pci soundcard or something to get me by untill I can build a new machine.

I have tried to follow suggestions from a couple other threads on this site but to no avail.

My problem: Recently I suddenly and for no particular reason that I know of, I lost both the sound on my computer AND the sound icon. I still get a little "click" sound whenever I receive e-mail or somewthing that would normally give me sound. Speakers are plugged in correctly, etc.

Any ideas? Any help would be GRATEFULLY accepted. Robinsan

This has happened to me occasionally, but I use windows xp. Try this:

1. go into start
2. click settings>control panel
3. once you are in the control panel click on sounds and audio devices
4. A separate screen should pop. One section should say device volume. Make sure that the volume bar there is all the way up. Click on the advanced tab under device volume and make sure none of the different sections are muted.

Have you done that already? I wasn't quite sure. Well if you haven't go ahead and try it.

I was playing music in media player and paused it using a button on my keyboard. I then opened up Movie Maker but when I played a video there was no sound. I seem to have lost all sound.
I've tried Movie Maker, Media Player and Youtube and there's no sound at all. I've turned the volume up, it's certainly not on mute, the speakers work perfectly fine and it was all fine just minutes ago before I paused my music.
Why have I lost the sound and how do I get it back? Really don't want to have to restart the computer to get it back unless I have to.

A:Lost all sound

Go into your system setting and check the correct sound card / driver is selected. Also open the control panel for controlling volumes and make sure teh level is turned up.  If something got corrupted you may need to re-install drivers for your soundcard.
Alternately your soundcard might only allow one application to play sound at once. Did you try playing audio with just one application open?

Ok, I had my laptop connected to my TV via HDMI, the sound wasn't playing through the TV speakers though only the laptop. So in trying to remedy this I right clicked on the sound icon in my system tray went to playback devices and inadvertently disabled my laptop speakers, and now they dont even appear as an option anymore. Please help.

A:Lost my sound.

open Control Panel. Look for the Sound icon. Click on that. If nothing in there helps.

Go to 'help and support' in your start menu. Click on Table of Contents. Search for 'sound off'. Try the trouble shooter. Or try the other help suggestions, like 'Music and Sounds'. Then click on Computer Sounds. That should tell you how to turn your volume controls back on.

The computer I am on presently doesn't have sound, so I am unable to look through the menus further, but that should help you get started.

A:lost sound

If this started recently, i would restore back to before the problem started via system restore. If you do not know how to use system restore, follow these instructions here:
If this does not work, then a reinstall of the sound card driver is in order. To do that usually if you insert the pc's recovery disc while running windows you can run a driver installer to install the drivers. For detailed instructions in this, refer to your pc's documentation.

I'd actually start by reinstalling the sound card drivers. That is if you have a soundcard that isn't part of your mainboard. If you do try putting in your start up cd, they usually come with an option to reinstall sound video etc drivers

This has happen to me in the past. Usually some conflict occurs software wise.

No biggy, just take your time. If worst comes to the worst and your are not into major sound. A new sound card will only set you back a few $$. But you should have to go that far.

Double Click the Volume Icon and make sure nothing is muted and the volume is all the way up.
If that still doesn't work, go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, if any devices have a yellow mark, they need to have drivers installed. If you have a name brand computer (HP, Dell etc) go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site, type in your service tag, or make and model # and download the audio driver for your computer.

(I removed your email. We respond to questions in the forum, and putting your email up in a public forum like that can lead to bots picking it up and inundating you with SPAM.)

The System Volume Information folder contains backups created by System Restore. It has nothing to do with sound. So the solution to the sound problem is elsewhere.

I Was Going Through My List Of Programs Deleting Stuff I Didn't Need When Accidentally Deleting my Sound Device, I Tried Fixing But Messing It Up More! My Sound Does Not Work Completly, Not On itunes, Internet, On Movie Player How Do I Fix This?

A:Lost Sound

Greetings NBurgess98, Welcome to TSF!

The fastest, and easiest way to fix this issue, is for you to do a "System Restore".

Please Note: Close all open windows and programs before doing this procedure.

Try this:...

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Once the System Restore panel appears > Restore my computer to an earlier time > Next > on the Left hand side will be a Calendar with Bold dates, select one of them to before you started your 'deleting frenzy'. > Next > OK > the computer will automatically reboot.

Upon reboot, the Desktop will appear without any Icons for about 2 minutes - this is normal.

You will also have a pop-up panel confirming that the "System Restore" has successfully restored your computer (click OK); then, the Desktop Icons will appear, and all should be normal.

Please update your Anti Virus program's database, as the "System Restore" does not save any recent updates.

Give this a try and post back with the results.

Hi mate...Well a lot of sound issues lately in the forum! Please tell us what sound card do you own. Is it correctly recognized by windows in device manager? Any yellow marks there?

You could try reinstalling the card's drivers as a first step.

Alright so don't make fun of me I'm not so computer saavy. I have a MSI 645E Max mobo, and needed the driver for sound controller. I found the one I need from the msi website, but it downloads as a winzip. What do I do to install?

A:lost sound

If you're running Windows XP, if you right-click on the file, there should be an "Extract.." or "Extract to.." selection as Windows XP has a basic unzip utility built in.

Just use the wizard to extract the zip to your desired location, hunt into the extracted place for a setup.exe or readme.txt for installation instructions and you should be all set.

Operating System is windows Vista. Attempted to hook up and use a headset with Microphone. It didn't work, so plugged speakers back in. Program is Realtek HD Audio Manager. I have lost all sound. I have gone to Control Panel, Sounds and everything shows working. Checked Device Manager...all showing o.k., but there is absolutely no sound, even on start up! Is there an internal sound card that could be damaged?

Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks! Lori

A:lost all sound....

Very likely. What version of indows? Go into Device Manager and see what's listed under 'Sound'.

If it's on-board, the drivers will be on the Motherboard CD. If it's add-on card, you should have a drivers CD for it, or you could pull the card out to identify it then look for drivers on-line.

I think the problem may be that you've got the microphone set to output through the speakers, although when I've had this enabled music still worked. See if you can turn it off, probably somewhere in volume control. Unfortunately I haven't got Windows booted at the moment so I cannot check.

Also to help solve your problem, could you tell me what operating system you are using (e.g. Windows XP, Windows 7)?

Hope you can solve it.

For no reason, I lost all my Sound Windows 2000, Media Player Files, Websites Midi, Aol.....everything. not even the usual Windows Sounds.
Using Sound Blaster AWE64Gold....says the device is working properly. Speakers connected and Levels are not muted.
I ran out of things to check. Any chance that a Sound Card would just go dead for no particular reason? Can you Download a New Driver online? (I have no original CD). Several Reboots over the past 2 days has not changed anything and Viruses were also scanned for.
Any assistance would be really appreciated. THANK YOU.... DOUG

A:I lost sound and need help

You are looking (or starting) in the wrong area. Go to the device manager and see if there is an error (and what the code is, if there is an error). If there is no error and it shows as "working OK", check the Sound Panel, the "speakers" should be set as the default playback device.

If the speakers are set as the default playback device and it shows as working OK in the Device manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound in the Device Manager and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it should detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems and may fix yours.

Hey, i installed Geforce 210 graphics card and after some days i lost sound
As saw in some other posts i dont know where is onboard audio in bios.Speaker is plugged in.Motherboard is ASUS P5N-MX. Please help..

One thing that isn't helping is that you don't have the driver for the onboard audio installed. It is running on the default Windows driver, which while it will work, only provides enough to get sound. You can find links to the latest Realtek driver for it here,

Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version

Next unless you're using the digital/spdif add-on board,

you need to set it to speakers in the Windows settings after installing the above driver.

Lost sound.  Playback devices show Realtek Digital Output. I had Realtek speakers before.  I don't have headphones so I cannot verify that they would work.

A:lost sound

You have not specified what you have connected to the desktop for sound output. Please do that.  Right click on the speaker icon in the systray and click on playback. As long as the driver is present for your analog speakers, you can set  the output to default for speakers. Once you have done that and if speakers are connected to the audio out at the rear of the desktop and powered on, you should see a green checkmark. Test the speaker output by clicking on configure and then test.

Last night, I was prompted to do some Windows updates to Vista. I did them. Then I was prompted to do a few optional updates. I did two of them too, including something to update Realtek audio or something. (Not really sure if I have this.) Anyway, now I find that I have no sound from items like YouTube on line.

I have checked checked Control Panel under Sound and Realtek and don't see anything obviously amiss.

Anyone have any sugestions what's happened and how to correct?

BTW, my speakers are built in to the monitor. Also, I have verified that mute is not on - at least not from the keyboard controls.

I tried to play a video and got no sound. The speaker icon in the tray at the bottom right of my screen show a red circle with a white X in it to the right of the speaker.
When I hover my mouse over the speaker icon, the following message appears: "The Audio Service is not running."
When I right-click on the speaker icon, the volume mixer option is grayed out. I click on another option (sounds) and get the following message: "This computer cannot play audio because the windows audio service is not enabled. Would you like to enable..." I click on "yes" and go through the motions, but it still doesn't remove the X from the icon nor enable the sound. Ugh...what have I managed to do?

I went into "sounds speech and audio devices" on the control panel and checked everything and it says everything is working fine. I went into the device manager, and there were no question marks under "sound, video, and game controllers", but in "other devices" above that, there are question marks on "SM bus controller", 2 "video controllers", I tried to re-install those things, but it doesn't find it, and I don't have a cd rom for them. I don't know if they can be the problem, or not. If not, I have no idea. The speakers are plugged in correctly.
