I had to format and re-install Windows XP on a Satellite A105-S4201 Laptop. I installed XP, and updated to SP3. The brightness control no longer works using Fn+F6/F7 (or any other way for that matter). It was working before the format.
I tried a couple of different Common Modules installs. This one: tc00324000b (version 6.07.03) won't even install. Gave me error message, "TVALG Driver installation has failed". And this one: SPA210 TCommon Modules-XP (version 1.00.06) installed, and had me restart, but when I tried to install the hotkey utilities afterward, it said "TOSHIBA Common Module not found! This setup will terminate." Also, I have the latest BIOS version installed (v 6.0)
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I suspect you need to go to the Toshiba site and see if there is a document telling you what drivers are needed AND the sequence to install them.
I bought this laptop used with Vista on it and the LCD brightness control wont work. The Brihtness is set at default level which is tolerable but non the less i cannot adjust it brighter or less. I reinstalled Vista and installed XP media center edition and still cannot get the brightness to adjust. I have installed all of the toshiba drivers for this notebook including the recent ACPI bios and hotkey application. I am currently on XP MCE.
If anyone has any ideas to what could be wrong i would glady appreciate it. I have been at this for a few days now and no answers not even from the Toshiba site.
I assume this is the "push the Fn button and another key" thingie? If so, check to ensure that the Fn key works by pressing it and one of the other functions to see if that works.
Then test the key that you use to adjust brightness - without using the Fn key. Does that key also perform it's designated function?
This'll let you determine if it's an error with the keyboard.

In my windows 8 HP laptop, brightness control buttons F2 & F3 suddenly stopped working. How to resolve this issue ?
Hi guys, i am facing this weird problem today. It happened suddenly without me doing anything like update or messing with drivers. It happened all by itself.
My laptop brightness is locked. I am used to hotkeys (shortcut) to change brightness, When i press them now.. i see a bar which won't go up or down, it's locked and brightness too. I went to "Power Options" page via control panel, and i altered the brightness slider but it didn't help.
Things i tried..
-Restarted Pc..... nothing
tried to fix using this post.... Brightness won't adjust after Windows 8.1 Update
-I tried to update Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver but it says it's up to date.
Try booting is Safe Mode. Then go into Device Manager. Delete the video drivers. Reboot normally.
Windows will reinstall the driver that was already in use before you deleted it. But I have seen this "support trick" work with many different hardware components.
It is very low risk so even if it doesn't work it was worth a shot.
This brand new laptop was installed with windows 8.1 64 bits. The screen brightness keys does not function. I urgently need the driver download link. Thanks.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Laptop-screen-brightness-control-not-functioning/td-p/5640814
I have an Acer Aspire 8935G with W7 HP 64 on an SSD and Vista HP 64 on an HDD. The Fn keys controlling the display brightness control work on the Vista boot but not on the W7 boot. All the other Fn keys function as they should on the W7 boot. The Aspire has an OEM ATI Radeon HD4670 graphics card. I've tried all 3 available driver versions for the card & OS from AMD but these two Fn keys won't work. Any ideas what's going on here? Do the W7 drivers override or deactivate the Fn brightness control keys?
I realise that the following link is for a different laptop, but it might open some ideas for troubleshooting:

After updating to W insider fast ring build on my Lenovo G notebook the Fn Up brightness control key combination has stopped working To check if Fn Down was working I pressed them and the brightness went down to quot quot and now the screen is always black both while plugged-in and unplugged Hence I'm not able to increase the brightness anymore FYI the quot Up quot arrow button works normally but the combination quot control brightness working zero. after Brightness is at W10 not 14393.10. Fn+Up updating build to Fn Up quot doesn't work while quot Fn Down quot does Safe Mode doesn't allow adjustment of brightness since it cannot load the display driver I tried installing a third-party brightness control software while in Safe Mode but then realized it won't work until I log in to my account in normal mode which I cannot do since the brightness is at zero Please help me asap PS - I have managed to increase the brightness for now but still the combination isn't working Fn Left arrow key combination also not working for volume down while Fn Right arrow for volume up is working
you can change brightness settings from settings itself instead of using the keys - just to make things easierhttp://forums.windowscentral.com/ask-question/434034-fn-up-brightness-control-not-working-after-updating-w10-build-14393-10-brightness-zero.html
Hey Guys I recently bought a Toshiba M laptop I ve had it for about a month now but i find that it tends to run a bit hot I can t tell what component it - Cooling Laptop M55 Fan Control Toshiba is that is getting so hot but it is located directly to the right of the touchpad where the base of your right hand would rest if you were typing Conversely it also gets really hot on the underside of the laptop at the same spot which when Laptop Fan Control - Cooling Toshiba M55 it s resting on your lap gets your thighs and well crotch depending on how close the laptop is to your torso very hot Now from what I understand laptops regulate their fans Laptop Fan Control - Cooling Toshiba M55 by temperature I was wondering if it s possible to change the temperature setting of the laptop to a lower setting so that the fan would turn on earlier and cool the thing down before it got that hot I tried using speedfan to check out the temps I only got one temp reading which I think was the Hard Drive which was at C and went up to C while the comp was doing nothing it felt hot to the touch I just want the fan to run more and do it s job the laptop hasn t hung or crashed yet sometimes the touchpad won t respond for a few seconds I m not sure whether that might be a heat related problem or not but either way I d like to cool this bad boy down Speedfan didn t do me any good really so i was wondering if anyone has experience with this sort of problem or suggestions on how to make the fan do it s job and also suggestions of other ways to cool the laptop down software or hardware aside from cooling pads which seem like a half- solution if it s a hardware solution you re suggesting ideally it d be an internal one so yeah please let me know all help would be greatly appreciated nbsp

If you'll listen, cool pads do work (I'll be it 1/2 way) Good selection
LAP top is a misnomer without a cooler, however on the internal part of cooling mods, I hope you're up to the task....

Hi everyone I own a Toshiba Satellite A the Laptop Toshiba DVD drive lost -S Besides some overheating problems I Toshiba Laptop lost the DVD drive haven t had much trouble with it Recently however I ran into a big problem For some reason the DVD drive has disappeared When I double click on my computer it only shows the c Toshiba Laptop lost the DVD drive drive I believe the problems started when I installed my external harddrive which took the E drive letter the DVD drive was D Removed the external harddrive but the DVD drive still did not reappear I went through the control panel and tried quot Add New Hardware quot but I couldn t find the drive at all I also tried digging through the BIOS to make sure that it was still set up but I really didn t have much luck Perhaps I m just not familiar with this BIOS but it didn t really have much options The only thing I noticed that I thought had been changed was that the boot order went harddrive- gt external harddrive- gt cd dvd drive I changed it to harddrive- gt cd dvd drive- gt external harddrive but still no dice I believe this is purely a software issue because the drive was working fine the other day and when I put a CD or DVD into the drive the light starts to flicker indicating that it s reading it or at least spinning it If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it Thanks very much nbsp
Help, I Turned On My Laptop Today To Download A New Program From The D: Drive And It Is Not There. Can Anyone Help?????
I need to reload windows vista, but i have lost my product key for my toshiba laptop,
Does anyone know if i can get a replacement and if i have to pay.
You could not lost the product key because the recovery disk is already activated.
So you don?t need any keys to install the OS using the recovery disk.
But if you lost the recovery disk then you could order this from here:
But it?s not for free? you have to pay a small fee.
Hi My son lost his toshiba recovery disk to a 1415 S-173 it uses windows xp
since the loss his laptop has caught a virus that has left it virtually useless .
the virus seems to be gone but many options are lost including the ability to move cursor button to the next line an so fourth ..
my question is this if I buy a new windows XP operating system will this fix my problem will this remove the old xp os system an replace it with a working one or do i need specifically the toshiba disk to fix this..not worried if i lose some progroams just want his internet service back so he can stay off my pc .
thank for any advice
if you buy a new windows and install it, it will wipe the whole hd and install your windows on it. This will get rid all the files on the hd.. This will remove the virus and whatever you have on the laptop, so all your files and such. When you install the new windows, make sure you choose format to format the HD to ensure the HD got wiped clean. Then proceed to windows installtion. AFter it's done, go to toshiba's website and download the needed driver for your system.
I've just installed XP on my Compaq 1694 Laptop, and have a couple of minor bugs. I used to be able to disable the double tap on the touchpad, and now the sensitivity is driving me crazy unless I plug in an external mouse. There is no new driver for the touchpad at the Compaq site, and after reinstalling the old driver I still don't have the options feature that allows me to disable the double-tap
I have the same model Compaq. I installed XP Pro, the only way I could turn off tapping was to install the XP drivers from Synaptic. The touchpad works fine now. You can try that. The drivers are at http://www.synaptics.com/support/downloads.cfm
I have toshiba laptot. function keys are not working and adjust brightness option is also not showing in the power section.
then how can I reduce the brightness of my laptop.
please help on this
To get the function keys working you can go to Desktop Assist (Toshiba) > Tools & Utilities > System Settings > Keyboard > Special function mode.
Even if it looks right do an Apply > OK that will probably start the service up again. Or you can reboot.
However you can simply use FN+F to access the functions anyway.
Other ways to the Brightness are Charms Menu > Settings > Brightness (Windows 8.1).
Or Control Panel > Display > Adjust Brightness.
You can go to Toshiba support and download the Function Key utility, and System Settings utility from them.
Hello everyone I own a Toshiba Satellite S -S with Windows installed For a long while now I have been unable to adjust the brightness on the laptop it's stuck at maximum Summary of the issue Display brightness is stuck at maximum All the function keys work except for those that control the brightness The slider that is supposed to pop up when the brightness controls are hit does not appear Changing the brightness using Power settings other manual options does not work as well What I've tried so far Installed the latest Display driver that Toshiba offers for my model Attempted to install the latest Toshiba Eco Utility Driver Note I have a hunch the issue is linked to the Eco utility The Eco utility can't be opened repaired or uninstalled at least not via the Toshiba update I downloaded above When the computer tries to engage the Eco Utility a pop up appears saying something about how the ordinal cannot be located in reference to teco exe When I try to Satellite, Toshiba non-adjustable Brightness run the Toshiba Eco Utility update from Toshiba selecting either the Repair or Uninstall options the installer is unable to complete the operation as well Rolling back to a previously used Display Adapter driver At this point I'm pretty lost as to what can be done short of a factory reset which I don't particularly want to do Any ideas folks Thanks in advance
Hello, and Welcome,
See if reinstalling the function key driver solves the issue. Select your OS in the left pane.
Toshiba Function Key
File: TC30632300A.exe (40.47M)
I would create a restore point before installing the driver.
Hi, I heard that the 4k display on P50 and P70 both use PWM for brightness. Is there any information about FHD on P50? Thanks
Go to Solution.
To make it clear, all displays use some kind of PWM to control brightness, it is almost impossible to do it without using it (HP DreamColor might be the exception, still not sure), especially in laptops. The big difference is how the PWM is implemented, what frequency and modulation it uses. So the "PWM-free" so called displays are rather an "annoying-free PWM implementation" displays. It is not a rocket science, just the level of cutting costs applied, as usually these days. How comes that a cheaper model can get better quality display than an expensive one ? Because no one cares. It is just "component" having size and pixel resolution. Unfortunately you have to wait for deep detailed reviews like notebookcheck site do because the price tag does not guarantee any quality anymore Even worse scenario, if there are multiple vendors of the "same" display for particular model (T440 LG vs AUO etc.) you are completely out of luck. Frustrating, eh ?

Did anyone found a fix for nebtook Samsung N145P and brightness control on Windows 8?
Usually on laptops/notebooks, there's a Fn key combo nation that controls the brightness. On my Samsung RV511, it's the Fn key + up/down arrow that controls my screen brightness. Check your notebooks manual for your controls. Otherwise go to control panel, hardware/sound, display and then look in the left pane for adjust brightness....click on that, then look at the bottom for the slider and slide accordingly.http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28179-brightness-control.html

It is always too dark. Is there a way to set this so I don't have to adjust it everytime I change pictures? I also use another video application that doesn't have a brightness control and it is also so dark that I can't hardly make out the picture.
My computer is a Gateway 700 using Windows 98SE.
It may be time for a new monitor.

Hello! I shall appreicate it if anyone can help me with my problem. I have recently purchased a HP Probook 440 G2. However, I do not see the Brightness and Contrast controlling meter where those should be. How can change Brightness and Contrast of my laptop. Wating for your valuable advise. Please e-mail me to abdullah_cwbmp@yahoo. com Abdullah
Display brightness controls on your ProBook 440 G2 are controlled by a key combination fn+f9 (brightness down) and fn+f10 (brightness up). Check the user document here - page 12 diagram. There are no keyboard-based contrast controls.

When i upgraded to win 8.1 my screen brightness went up and i can't control it. i tried re-installing the graphic drivers but it's not helping. Also my battery backup has decreased from 3.5 hrs to 2 hrs only. What do i Do?
You might see if you may be able to adjust your screen brightness using an option in the tutorial below.

It wouldn't hurt to check and see if this may be responsible as well.

Hi,My brightness control does not work. Fn buttons for brightness control don't work as well. I've tried all methods given on the internet such as updating the driver through device manager, changing the startup application etc. Quite frustrating that I cannot change the brightness settings. However, I realise that after I click on 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer', it states that I have two of the same display adapters. Thanks
I'd suggest removing/deleting them all from device mgr. Then reboot and allow the system to re-install. Jack E/NJhttp://community.acer.com/t5/Legacy-Laptops-and-Netbooks/Brightness-control-not-working/td-p/429205/jump-to/first-unread-message

Try going to Display Properties in the Control Panel and click on the advanced settings buttons. Most manufacturer's drivers have color and brightness controls for the card that stay put when changed. If it's just the players that are too dark, look for an "overlay" adjustment. If you don't see those settings, look for an updated driver for your graphics card.
The brightness control keys (f2 & f3) and also the action center controls are unreliable. They have been so ever since I bought this notebook, which was almost a month ago. If and when the controls don't work, rebooting seems to do the job and that's what I've been doing for the past month but this isn't exactly a solution. Help please! P.S. On my IBM Thinkpad T43, the brightness controls no longer work. Pressing Fn+Home/End is supposed to lower/raise the setting, and it used to, but no longer does. It's also supposed to lower or raise the brightness depending on what power it is running on, but no longer does that, either.
I tried restoring to my original XP image, where it worked fine, but it still does nothing. Given that it used to work anywhere (BIOS, etc) I'm beginning to think it has nothing to do with XP's setup, but I can't seem to find a BIOS setting that makes a difference, either.

Hi, Your notebook is listed as having Intel/AMD switchable graphics, so try the following. First, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the link below. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72068.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, do not restart as prompted, instead download and reinstall the driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72066.exe When the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook and let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Can anyone offer a solution?
Hi Welcome to Seven Forums .. You could try using another Model of the Notebook for your Drivers .. The big problem you face is that you Downgraded to Windows 32 Bit .. Unless you Install the 64 Os it is going to be very difficult to get all your Functions working .. Plus you are not making the best use of your Ram ..http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/337846-cant-adjust-brightness-win7-toshiba-c50-1jm-downgraded-win8.html
I can't change brightness on Toshiba Tecra S11 with Win7 using FN keys (sound disable and others work fine) when logged as normal user.
Hotkeys console appears and when pressing F6 or F7, brightness is always set to level 1 (no matter how bright monitor really is) and can't be changed.
I can change it via Power Options or logged on as an administrator.
Maybe you didn?t install VAP (value added package) for all user accounts.
Please reinstall VAP using your user account.
You can also check if the user account supports Admin right.
You can run the single applications (exe) as admin.
For that you have to click right on exe file (value added package) and should chose +Run as administrator.+

If you have a Mac with Windows 8.1 you may notice that the text is fuzzy after installing the Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033... also th brightness controls do not work on the keyboard.
To fix this issue I did the following:
1) Go into the Device Manager and disable the Generic PnP Monitor under the Monitors item.
2) Go to AMD and download the 13.11 Beta AMD Catalyst? Notebook Display Driver. Install.
After a reboot the display looked much better and the brightness works too! Hope this helps people out there trying to get 8.1 configured on their mac laptops. Enjoy!
I ran the other Catalyst (non beta) and it didn't work. This solved my problem. Thanks.http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-hardware/32903-fuzziness-no-brightness-control-8-1-mac-fixed.html
Where do u go to increase or decrease the screen brightness and contrast?
Most monitors control this using the old method of buttons on the side or lower frame of device.
But on a laptop, that is a different story, and is built in by the OEM, not Windows XP.
Hello, can somebody point me in the right direction to solve the following problem. I have just purchased an Acer Aspire F5-573-52MU Laptop and a week after purchase (Sept 2016) my Fn Hotkey stopped working when I try to increase or decrease the brightness (Fn + Right or Left Arrow), but it still works when I adjust the Volume (Fn + Up or Down Arrow). I have also performed a complete factory reset (As suggested by ACER Support), but to no avail? The screen needless to say is very bright and with no control over the brightness leads to a faster discharge of the battery. Has anybody encountered a similar problem on this model, any suggestions to rectify this would be gratefully received?
Go to Solution.
It would seem MS Win10 auto update "might possibly have updated the driver" creating a loss of the hotkey functionality. This would also explain why my factory reset/install failed to correct the problem? Replaced the monitor driver manually in device manager by selecting the generic PnP Monitor version. PROBLEM SOLVED, Yah! Although I feel this problem may well happen again on the next update (I hope not)! Anyway this cured my problem...

Hi there, had to replace the hard drive and reinstall. Tried:Windows 8.1 professional / No brightness controlWindows 7 professional / No brightness controlXubuntu 13 / No brightness controlUbuntu 13 / No brigthness controlAlready downloaded the windows 7 and windows 8 drivers from the website support based on the model: no luck, doesn't work. Windows 8 doesn't even let me install (the install files say the computer doesn't match the hardware). Also downloaded the intel update driver tool, detected, downloaded, installed but no change, the computer remains with the Windows basic display driver. The touchpad synaptycs doesn't work, no scroll functions available, but the brightness is what concerns me the most. Tried searching by the serial # but no luck, everything brings me to the basic NE56R drivers. Will appreciate any help, thanks * I searched the web all around, above and below, the model seems very rare but I found posts about that laptop having brightness problems, no solutions found.http://community.acer.com/t5/Gateway-eMachines-and-Packard/Gateway-NE56R-no-brightness-control/td-p/368759/jump-to/first-unread-message
I've got a Satellite Pro R50 - bought just 1 month ago.
Suddenly the Function F3 command to control the brightness has stopped working.
The Brightness can go down with Function F2 but F3 doesn't work
F3 Works in software and the Windows OS to pull up search, but not pulling up the control for brightness.
As such I'm stuck with my brightness down as low as it goes.
I've downloaded the latest Function key driver and installed, so it's not that.
Anyone got any help they can give?
As temporary solution you can change brightness level in power settings.

After the upgrade i installed all the drivers and tried all the methods given online but they all failed . please help me find the solution to this problem .http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Brightness-control-keys-not-working-F2-and-F3-after-win-10/td-p/5672869
I have a Sony VAIO CW Core i3 laptop which is running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 64-bit. I cannot change the brightness anymore (probably since the SP1 update).
I get this: http://puu.sh/1nWX It maxes out at one bar. Furthermore, the brightness control is now gone from Windows Mobility Center: http://puu.sh/1nYJ
My video card is nVidia GeForce 310M. I've already tried methods mentioned in other forums as well as Sony Support, such as installing and reinstalling Sony Shared Library and Sony Notebook Utilities, as well as uninstalling all nVidia drivers and reinstalling them.
I've tried installing the newest nVidia driver from the nVidia website, but that failed and told me that I don't have compatible hardware (which is crap because I chose the right model..)
What else can I do? Is this because of Service Pack 1? Is there anything else I could try before trying to roll back the service pack?
Ok, looks like I fixed it.. seems that installing the video driver in TeamViewer breaks the native functionality. Uninstalled it from the advanced options, and brightness controls are back!http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/154044-brightness-control-broken-all-methods-tried.html
Will appreciate any help, thanks * I searched the web all around, above and below, the model seems very rare but I found posts about that laptop having brightness problems, no solutions found.http://community.acer.com/t5/Gateway-eMachines-and-Packard/Gateway-NE56R-no-brightness-control/m-p/368759

I can't control the brightness level of my laptop screen! When I open (Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options) I can't found it!
Usually you can change the screen brightness using FN+F6/F7 key combination.
Does it work for you?
After installing new Windows7 ultimate OS.Brightness control keys are not working of my laptop. My laptop model is HP RT3290I search for drivers but not find suitable.I also search for wifi driver but not find suitable.SO please solve my problem. THANKYOU 1http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/BRIGHTNESS-CONTROL-KEYS-ARE-NOT-WORKING/td-p/5657998
I'm using Win7 64bit in Inspiron 3542.
After i resume windows from hibernate, brightness control is not happening using quick keys. Every time i need to go to control panel & change manually. Other quick key functions are working except the brightness control. The brightness bar stuck like below.
Even killed quickset process & opened again, nothing useful in it. But when i reboot the system it starts working, and problem starts again when i hibernate.
I take it that when you notice this, restarting the notebook corrects the problem every time? I am not suggesting this as a solution(sometimes i would rather see the dentist than have to restart one of my PCs) but I want to make sure that this isn't a hardware issue.
When you notice the problem with the brightness keys try holding down FN when pressing them and see if there is a change.
As another test go into Windows and change the power plan and change it to "high performance" before hibernating the notebook. Before resuming plug in the AC adapter and see if you are now able to adjust the brightness, if you are able to then this becomes less of a problem with the function key behavior and an issue with power management.
I have a ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one running Windows 10. The monitor control box to adjust brightness etc.. will appear after app 30 - 60 minutes of use and won't go away. If I touch the 'exit' button on the frame it will disappear but comes back almost immediately. I've disabled HotKeys, updated drivers and nothing is helping.
If anyone has run across this or knows of a fix your help is greatly appreciated.
Mod's Edit: System model added to front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.
How long ago did you upgrade to Win 10, and where did you source the Win 10 drivers ? Did you have this problem with the prior OS, Win 7 I assume ?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCentre-A-E-M-S-Series/M90z-Brightness-control-box-pops-up-and-won-t-go-away/td-p/3368146
The issue is resolvedI would like to know how to get hp splash screenI dont hav it
Welcome back @shrayank! I moved your post for better exposure because the splash screen not showing up is a separate issue from the original brightness issue you had experienced and resolved. By accepting the solution when the issue is resolved, others will be able to find the steps that work also. To help computers start faster, on some models the HP splash screen is not displayed during the start up process. In this case, you can try these steps to see if it is possible for you to enable the HP logo screen:Restart the computer.Press F10 repeatedly to enter the system BIOS screen.Select the Boot section using the right arrow key.Select Boot-time Diagnostic Screen using the up and down arrow keys.Press Enter to select boot-time diagnostic.Select Disabled to show the logo screen.Press Enter.Press F10, and then press Enter to save the changes and exit the system BIOSThis should enable the splash screen if it is available to be enabled. If this reply helped, please use the Accept as Solution button. If you want to give me a virtual high five, please click the Thumbs Up icon below. Thank you for coming back and seeking another helping hand from the HP Support Forums community! Have a great day!http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Re-Brightness-Control-Unavailability-and-Non-Working-of-Hot/td-p/5723088
Our new EliteOne 800 All-In-One machine has the increase brightness button on the front panel of the display always lit up. As a result the increase/decrease brightness control is shown constantly on the windows display. Pressing the increase or decrease brightness buttons has no effect. Powering the machine off and on again makes no difference and has been tried several times. Any ideas?

Which BIOS version is installed? Have you tried the AMD graphics software softpaq from HP? Try the Windows 8.1 version in compatibility mode. Right click the softpaq and click on troubleshoot compatibility.http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp64001-64500/sp64040.exe The following article at the How-to Gee has some info on driver installation.http://www.howtogeek.com/219782/is-windows-10-backwards-compatible-with-your-existing-software/http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Brightness-Control-Hotkeys-are-not-working-after-windows-10/td-p/5178024

Hi, Can you post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - you can usually get this by holding down the fn key and pressing esc, otherwise see Here for a guide on locating this information. I had formatted my notebook and installed windows 7 home basic. The option of brightness control is missing. There is no slider present. I had tried searched using Windows mobility centre but there is also no option for adjusting brightness.

Since updating my HP Pavillion 64 bit to Windows 8.1, I have been unable to use an HDMI cable or reduce the computer brightness. I figured it would be a simple fix: restore to before the update, and wait for the bugs to be worked out. However, every time I attempt to access the control panel to perform a system restore, the entire OS freezes. Can someone help me resolve this?
Update: I tried to power on my computer just now to no avail. Stayed on the HP loading screen for 30 min.
Sounds like a Hard Drive issue, first things first, try checking your whole hard drive. Download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, burn it and boot to it. Go into Dos Programs and you'll see Hard Drive Tools, pick the tool for your brand hard drive and run a full scan on the surface. You can also try GWscan, which can do both Seagate and WD drives, look for "read element failure" because that error will cause that 30 minute non-boot in some cases.
Sometimes a bad or corrupted spot on the HD will cause all kinds of other apparently unrelated and insane problems, so check the disk before doing anything else.
If you have an SSD drive in there, then do not do any of this, you will have to use the tool for the drive made by whoever made it, or simply so a CHKDSK, you can do that from Hiren's using Mini XP, it's better to do it from there rather than let Windows 8 do it, especially in the state it is in now.

IS there any tool, which will enable me to controll the brightness with some re-assigned short keys ?? I have a Sony Vaio Laptop but the thing is that the utility for my laptop which is responsible for Brightness control is not comparable with Windows 8, so I am searching for some tool/software which will help me to control my screen brightness.
You could try f.lux: software to make your life better.had it running with seven,a real "eye-saver",adjust your day and night level of brightness and remember to set your geographical location's coordinates, hope this helps.http://www.eightforums.com/software-apps/30156-control-brightness-some-re-assigned-short-keys.html
Hi, in the last days i have troubles with the laptop: In the left upper corner of the screen there is always an indicator identic as the brightness/volume indicator - always showing 100 independently on the actual values of brightness/volume. I am not able to make the indicator disappear. In the same time some operations slow down (e.g. I have problems writing an email - the letters appear in the screen a few seconds (or dozens of seconds) after pressing the keys. The start button (both in the screen and the start key in the keyboard) do not work, the touch control doesnot work properly, the hot-keys (like alt-tab) do not work.... I though maybe some of the new actualizations do not cooperate well with the drivers - I tried to uninstall recent actualizations, but without any success. Can you please tell me where is the problem and how to fix? Thanks.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Brightness-indicator-hanging-on-the-screen-limited-control/td-p/5644466
Yeah, when I put my lappie to sleep and then wake it up again in the morning, it's usually on a lower birghtness setting and the function keys seems to have stopped working so I either have to reboot or adjust it via Start > Control Panel.
The volume control also fails to show up on the screen, but appears to still work.
Anyone know what I need to to do fix this? Sony Care Centre or something?
Hi there .. You need the Function Key Software Vaio Care ..http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/307985-fn-f5-f6-brightness-control-not-working-after-sleep-sony-vaio.html
I have a Satellite P50-C-11V laptop. I cannot adjust screen brightness using keys or settings. Even the slider in the mobility center does not change the brightness. I can move the slider but nothing changes. This happend 2 or 3 days ago. Before it was woking perfecly. I cannot understand what caused this.
All my drivers are up to date (maybe this is the problem )
After a few sleepless night i fixed my probem. If you are experiencing the same problem, all you need to do is to go device manager - monitor - teamviewer monitor driver
and uninstall it. Reboot your laptop. That's it.
When I bought my DELL some weeks ago which came with OS Ubuntu I remember the screen brightness was adjustable by using Fn keys F F Since I installed Win some days back the screen brightness remain very dull may be the lowest setting which I do not mind for my day to day work But for my photo and graphic work this 3521 MY CONTROL ISSUE INSPIRON BRIGHTNESS 15 DELL IN intensity is far from satisfactory I have checked the internet on this and saw many of BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ISSUE IN MY DELL INSPIRON 15 3521 you also share the same experience I followed almost all the advices given in there and since there was no improvement I downloaded all the drivers from the DELL official website for Win and installed them nbsp Actually then one thing happened that is now I could see the on-screen brightness and loudness control icons or symbols BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ISSUE IN MY DELL INSPIRON 15 3521 nbsp Incindentally the sound speaker control works fine Fn BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ISSUE IN MY DELL INSPIRON 15 3521 F F F while the screen brightness indication appears without any response to the keys actually it indicates the maximum brightness in the scale and when I try to reduce the scale it reduces by scale point and stays and would not move any further nbsp However this has no change in the brightness of the screen which as I already told is low I have not yet decided to contact the dealer on this matter which could be a small issue perhaps which I am uanble to come to terms with yet I do not know how to solve this problem Is this a technical issue or a manufacturing fault Could anyone help me please Must be very grateful Regards Gehan Wijesinghe Sri Lanka nbsp
Hi Gehan Wijesinghe,
Please go to BIOS screen by tapping F2 continuously on boot up and ensure that the FN Key behavior is set to Multimedia. (Refer to the picture below)

Hi there .. I have seen this feature before think it was on an Asus Laptop ... I have had a look on the HP Website and can not see any Software that relates to this issue .. It could be well hidden though maybe in the Tools .. I am pretty sure the Function Keys do not have control over that..Could there be a Setting in the BIOS to turn it off ? I suppose if it was Software related one way to get shot of it would be a Clean Install with out all the Bloatware ..http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/338819-need-turn-off-remove-hp-proprietary-screen-brightness-control.html

Hello There are countless threads with people who can't change brightness on Windows Easily solved switch to the generic Windows graphics driver However to me this solution removes the Sleep option in Power menu Only Hibernate is left but I don't want to use it I just bought a W10 control, Brightness pick Sleep OR Graphics driver: one small SSD for the OS and I want to save the write cycles So as the situation stands I can either choose to have the Sleep option with Intel Graphics driver W10 Graphics driver: Sleep OR Brightness control, pick one or have the brightness control with the Windows graphics W10 Graphics driver: Sleep OR Brightness control, pick one driver I chose the former because I use sleep a few times a day W10 Graphics driver: Sleep OR Brightness control, pick one but don't change brightness very often But I want both I am just checking is there any option to have both sleep power setting AND working brightness control in Windows Is Microsoft or Intel working on fixing the problem - I use two graphics drivers at once - NVidia and Intel Can't have just NVidia that removes both brightness and sleep - Yes I have the latest Intel driver - Yes I have disabled adaptive brightness - No I can't adjust brightness manually if I try that the screen is totally dimmed and I have to switch the drivers to fix it - I have Lenovo Z Windows with the Anniversary package - didn't help - I made a clean install of W after my old W install got stuck in update-remove update loophttp://www.tenforums.com/graphic-cards/61272-w10-graphics-driver-sleep-brightness-control-pick-one.html
To start off, I had malware and adware in a few places, got that taken care of. My friend went through my services and disabled ones that he didn't see necessary. Now I can't control my sound level or brightness level, so my computer is on the darkest screen level. I work a lot on my computer, really need help with this ASAP.
Hello and welcome to the forums Buck.
I don't think disabling services is a good way to get rid of malware and adware if that's what you mean? If I was you I would do a system restore to before he disabled the services and see if that works.

I purchased Dell Inspiron 5558 (with Windows 10) just two months ago (Nov 2015). Everything was working fine. However, recently I started to notice an annoying thing with the function keys F11 and F12 for reducing and increasing the brightness respectively.
Without using the Fn key (next to Windows key), if I hit F11 it was reducing the brightness and F12 was increasing the brightness earlier - as expected. Now, sometimes, the laptop monitor goes to sleep mode the moment I hit F11 or F12. I have to press the power button again to wake it up. This behavior is very off and on and not consistent.
Did any settings get changed? How to fix this? Please help.
FYI - I have not changed the BIOS settings from default which could be multimedia. I can say this because other multimedia keys in the same row behave normally (even when this strange behavior is noticed in F11 and F12).
The settings for those FN keys are handled by the Dell Quickset Utility, and later the Dell Command Configuration application, so any changes you would want to make would be done in that application.
I would suggest going into that application and seeing if you can change the settings. Putting a system to sleep is one of the functions available so perhaps the configuration has changed. If you want additional help please click on my Dell Todd username and send me a private message with the Dell Service Tag of the system and I'll see if I can help. Please keep all discussions and troubleshooting here in this thread so that others, with the same questions or problems, can see what is done to resolve.
Many people having problems with the brightness control (doesnt work) when you resume your notebook from sleep/hibernate. I noticed that the problem only occurs if you set the action (sleep/hibernate) for when you closing the lid. But if you set the sleep/hibernate action for the powerbutton, the brightness works fine on resume.I have search many sites but no one has a fix yet. Does MS knows about this brightness problem for W7 ?https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/08a3eb1d-b698-4639-af4b-5278b721fcdc/brightness-control-after-resume-sleephibernate-broken?forum=w7itprohardware
Good afternoon everyone, The monitor I presently use in an AsusTek, VH198. Although, I have lowered the brightness level to 0, and adjusted the contrast some, the screen still seems to be too bright...especially at night-time.I've briefly looked at a few of the free monitor brightness/dimming control software applications available, but am unsure if they will actually enable me to lower the screen brightness more than what it presently is.My questions:1. Are any of these programs really effective?2. Is there any risk associated with them?3. Any recommendations as to a good one to try?Thank you for your time and any insight!
Are you using the video card properties or the on-screen display to control your monitor's brightness.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/445039/monitor-brightnessdimmer-control-software;-are-they-safe-to-use/
hey all... i have a problem
I can't adjust brightness in games or in NVDIA control panel
when i change the brightness it changes for very few seconds and returns back !!
i don't know why??
Please fill in your specs
System Specs Tool
I would suggest that you make sure you have the latest video drivers
The computer is Sony VGC-JS190 with Win7 home premiumas the OS.
I can't seem to find the brightness control slider in the usual places like power management, Display etc . My current keyboard does not have the Function keys with brightness buttons like the original Sony KB. Does this mean I need to connect up the old keyboard to perform this ? Is there a Windows control?
Aren't there controls on the side of the screen for brightness and contrast? If not, connect the keyboard up again.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/320201-cant-find-brightness-control-sony-aio-computer-win7.html
i download drivers for my brightness, i click on these on my desk top, nothing happens,
Can any one advise me on this one.

Someone used my notebook and the display got bigger, and blurrier. I fixed the blurriness, and I can't really change the resolution except for 800x600 and 1024x768. I thought I had more options than that. Also, when I go to Power options under control panel to changes plan settings, the slider where I could change display brightness is nowhere to be found. So when I unplug the power cord, the screen no longer dims. halp me guise!

I have HP pavillion DV6703TX laptop and there is a problem with brightness in it. When it resumes from sleep its brightness change control stops working, means it cannot be changed either by F7 and F8 keys or by power management option in vista settings. Also brightness option in windows mobility center is not shown after this happens, every other options like sound, battery state shows on hitting WIN+X. So to change brightness I have to restart windows then it works completely fine and brightness option also shows on mobilty center box. Is there any hotfix for this like there was one for sound problem after sleep in vista. I have upgraded the latest available video driver on driver download support section but the problem persists. please help :-(
Hi. . .
Are you updated with Vista SP1?
The following set of exes allow you to map custom buttons on laptops to Windows shortcut commands . Currently supported is : to increase and decrease volume/brightness by a single click . Quick brightness change is great for long gaming or development sessions on the pc !
I have been missing that feature badly.
Also sending shortcuts i.e ALT+TAB is supported.
You need your laptop to have the software that can map the button to the exe.
This is donationware so all help is appreciated.
Coming soon also one-button changing the Nvidia color levels, as this is another thing that has been killing me.
Get it here.
Occasionally, when resume from hibernation/suspend, display brightness control doesn't work. Means that Fn + F2,F3 doesn't work, change from Windows Power Options doesn't work, change from intel graphic doesn't work.
Anyone know if I have to restart some services to get it working? It's occasional and I can't find anything exact in EventLog.
My system is HP Probook 4230s with Core i5-2410 with intel HD3000. Latest patches on both Win 7 Pro 32-bit and intel driver.
Restart machines solve the problem, re-hibernate or re-suspend machine occasionally solve the problem, but mostly not.
See if HP have an update for their firmware or function key control drivers. I know its a new pc, but its worth a shot.http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/168696-lcd-brightness-control-doesnt-work-after-resume-sleep-hibernatio.html
I recently purchased a Dell Latitude 7370 with the QHD panel. I was very surprised to find that the new 7370 line is plagued with the infamous Dynamic Brightness Control "feature" that cannot be disabled, especially when Dell is just now removing DBC from the XPS 15 and XPS 13 QHD models.
Dynamic Brightness Control is a dealbreaker, and I would not have ordered the 7370 had I known it was a supplied feature. Is there any information as to whether or not a patch is in the works to be able to update the display firmware to remove DBC in the near future? Any help or information about how to disable this will be greatly appreciated.
