Be careful where you get your free software or free software updates

Q: Be careful where you get your free software or free software updates

Be careful where your get your free software or free software updates from. Some programs on certain download sites can get malware, viruses, or have pups even if the program provided was originally clean. One site I recommend is MajorGeeks they do a really good job.

Preferred Solution: Be careful where you get your free software or free software updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ninite is another very clean site. Plus it is a very handy site. https://ninite.com/

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall secure free try free/free source software? and sites & Good movies legal to for goal of this site to Good source sites for secure & legal free movies and free/free to try software? start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies music and software games I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit support pirating websites but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway And also for people like me that Don't want to steal but also don't want to pay more than I have to Master list of sites for free dirt cheap movies music and free free to try software Music Open Music Archive LEGAL NOTICE Contains music with expired copyright according Good source sites for secure & legal free movies and free/free to try software? to UK copyright law which states that the copyright expires years after the author's death As such some of the music may be considered pirated in countries with longer copyright periods For example The longest copyright period I know of is Mexico years after the author's death INCOMPETECH This guy composes his own music and gives it away for free Movies and or TV Hulu Movies and tv free with ads or for cost of membership watchable without ads http www epixhd com Free for Dishnetwork users Netflix Not completely free but VERY low price Software WARNING As stated by Quietman Many free Software Sites contain ads or link to sites containing ads with misleading download links to potentially dangerous software Be sure to click the correct download link which is usually smaller than the false link and it's usually a good Idea to avoid clicking on links with the words Reccomended or Important next to the link Even if the correct download link is selected Potentially unwanted programs PUPs May be installed if you click through without opting out Bleeping Computer Cnet Download Wide variety of software including games Game demos video and audio players editors etc Cnet installs PUPS practically as a rule unless you opt out MajorGeeks SnapFiles FileHippo Also has a utility for keeping programs up to date A list of unsafe legally questionable for free sites would probably be helpful as well

A:Good source sites for secure & legal free movies and free/free to try software?

That is a good question.
When I think about it Hulu does have movies.
I use Netflix.
I can use http://www.epixhd.com/ as I have Dishnetwork and can use that to be able to watch. Yup, just tested works good.
Many of the Movies channels can be watched that way.

Hi there

Why can't people be more honest on their websites -- as well as making it harder and harder to find REAL downloads without confusing extra offers / links to other programs with the real link buried deep down in an easy to miss website - I really hate the following that seems to be commonplace now -- FREE DOWNLOAD which implies FREE -- but the SOFTWARE most certainly Isn't but totally no mention of BUY / PAY on the site.

We should BOYCOTT those sites and make our feelings known --nothing wrong about people wanting to make a few bucks - especially these days with good jobs getting harder to find -but we can still be OPEN.

Cheers

OK, the "bad" version of the Macrium Reflect Linux based Rescue CD is 5.0.4076. I made a new rescue CD with the latest Macrium 5.0.4196 and the problem appears to be fixed.

The games selection installed in Dell's Vista is small and not varied. In this boxes Linux guise there's a lot more fun stuff to demo the machine. I don't expect good results with old commercial Win98 games as those, seemed to crash and have issues even when updated with patches running on Win98SE.

Any body running any Free games under Vista? I'm not going to bother buying commercial titles, nor do I want to run stuff of dubious sources.

I'm looking for decent Open Source or Shareware (well maybe) suggestions, that are fun but don't have to have to be state of the art, gameplay more important than film quality graphics.

I'm confused by the term "single home user". Will this program, AVG Free anti virus protection, cover my whole pc? My wife has an account, and after using Norton system works, a heck of a learning expierance, I've learned to look before I leap. Seems her account was covered for anti virus protection, but for everything else, we had to log off, reboot, and go to her account. Adaware, is the complete opposite. It covers both sides.
Thanks. I just got my warnings from Norton, and am not planning on going through THAT again.

I have looked round the internet and all I can find is software that doesn't work with vista or suspect looking freeware on shady looking sites.

So rather than download some piece of spyware I thought I'd see if anyone on here can reccomend anything.

Also please dont put "just google "sms for free on PC" there's loads of links." That just makes me angry because you think I'm too stupid to try that before posting. Also its lazy, if most people actually bothered looking at the links they would see it just links to mainly advertising sites.

Just been asked this, by a friend:

I was authorised to do it - but it was a DJ set, so was all mixed. What software is best (pref. free) and for the Mac.

The file is in .asf format and I have succeeded in converting it to .mp4 and .mpg formats too.

I have recorded a dvd that plays ok on my dvd player, but is annoying in not being able to go direct to a track in a 2.25 hour long broadcast."

Hi there,

I'm looking for watermark software that's free for both pics & video.S

Something that's virus free of course.

Thank you

A:Free Watermark Software

You can add watermarks to image easily with GIMP, start with the main image open in GIMP, copy in the watermark image, give the watermark image some transparency, position it in palce, then save the whole thing out as a jpg or png, watermarking done. For videos it's tricker, to add a watermark you need to go through the same sort of processes and software which is reauired for any compositing or greenscreen like task. You could do this with blender, but it would be a very tricky way to do it, blender can do video editing but it's main function is 3d modelling and animation. Another program which might be able to do video editing of the form which involves adding a watermark is wax 2.0, it might not even exist any more but back in 2012 I used it for greenscreen, layering and compositing effects. GIMP, blender are free, wax 2.0 is probably still free if it exists any more, it was free back in 2012.

Welcome
Im glad that you came to us. The short version is that most maintenance software will cause more problems than worth with Vista. Vista does not need much to work properly and too much will slow up and possibly even damage the registry.
Follow these quick to have a great running system.
This is for Visat, too
To maintain your computer

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.
http://www.piriform.com/

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

If you have additional questions, just post.
We will be here for help even after you follow the instructions given.

I have been told (from someone here at BC) to go to something called "thepiratebay.org" and download something called a "torrent" for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and that MBAM lets you have the *FULL* version for free. Is this true? or is it piracy? Whats a torrent? Whats a keygen? Are they safe and legal? I am new to alot of this so sorry if this sounds amateur.Thank you.

A:Free Software? Is it piracy?

OH ChrisMN,Thank you for posting this question here. I would like to reply unequivocally that YES, this is indeed piracy. Torrenting is a way for anyone, even if they have small bandwidth, to participate in the peer to peer downloading and uploading of huge data transfers. The data is hosted and you just download or upload from the torrent site. It is not in and of itself bad. It can be very useful and there are legitimate reasons to use, or participate in torrenting. The problem begins when people upload copyrighted versions of applications, music, or what-have-you. Malwarebytes, the full paid version is indeed copyrighted and it IS piracy to download this program. A keygen is a generated key developed by way of "cracking" the software application and then making a key to operate the software program. This is completely illegal.Bleeping Computer does NOT condone the discussion or use of KeyGens or the torrenting of copyrighted materials. It is stated in the forum rules that you will find here. As quoted from the rules... No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences.Thank you for bringing this to the staff's attention ChrisMN

I only found seamoneky, and netobject fusions to be free. but neither is any satisfactory or an alternative to Dreamweaver.

Any other ideas? Ideally something with some good functions, but not as invovled as dreamweaver.

this doesn't really answer my question for a free software, but I just found that DreamSpark offers some MS software free for students. Among others Expression Studio, which kind of is like Dreamweaver. Good i found this now, sine I will graduate in 3 weeks. They have a list of universities and you need to sign in with the university email address.

And I almost purchased this or Dreamweaver with student discount. Being free, made the choice easy and the discount bigger. I also downloaded Server 2008... who knows what that will be good for...

So I cant afford paid antispyware so I downloaded three FREE ones: Ad-Aware, Spy S&D, and ThreatFire. I dont want to lag my computer so I was wondering which of these I should uninstall for better ones and which are better? Im thinking replacing ThreatFire with Windows Defender.
And I have McAfee but it isnt that good.. (Not sure if its the full package)
And I am using Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. Is there a better one?

A:Best Free AntiSpyware software?

mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products). Further, most people don't understand Spybot's TeaTimer or how to use it and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools.More effective alternatives are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware Free.Bleeping Computer's Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial AppsBleeping Computer's List of Virus & Malware Resources

Hi all,

After having a little scare with my PC not booting I've been looking on the net for some free software to backup my files, photo's, music etc.

I have many discs with folders and photo's that I've done in the past just by using my burning software but I wondered is there anything that can be 'scheduled' to backup files so as I'm working each day I know it's sorted?

I have tried the XP ntbackup but it says it can't connect to the Removable Storage service. I have only one HDD, no external drives.

Thanks in advance,

Lisa
-X-

A:Free backup software?

You should consider an external drive. Backups made to your main drive will be of no use if it fails. CD/DVD backups are possible, too, but much less convenient than scheduled backups to an external drive.

Free backup applications:

FileHamster
Karen's Replicator
Cobian backup
SyncBack
DeltaCopy (Works like Vista's file transfer and only copies changed bytes so whole file not copied.)
Allway Sync
VersionBackup
JaBack
WinBackup

An occasional backup of the entire system, operating system, programs, and files, so they could be restored to a new hard drive if need be, is also a good idea.

Free Drive Cloners/Imagers:

EaseUs Disk Copy (Copies disks or partitions)
XXClone
CloneZilla GParted LiveCD (Complete partitioning and drive imaging/restoration tools)
CloneZilla
Partition Saving
PCI CloneMaxx
Drive Image XML
HDClone
DriveClonerXP
Self-Image
copyr.dma (Copies disk with bad sectors for recovery)

Commercial Apps:

O&O DiskImage
Acronis True Image Home
EAZ-FIX Professional and Easy Image
Drive Snapshot
Keriver Image
Avanquest Copy Commander
Paragon Drive Backup
NovaBackup
R-Drive Image
Norton Ghost
HDClone Pro or Enterprise
Terabyte Image for Windows
Terabyte Image for DOS (can directly access FAT, FAT32, and NTFS partitions)
Spotmau Disk Clone & Backup

Hi

Does anyone know of any reliable free encryption software?

Occasionally l have to send paper notes to clients, which is really time consuming, costly and not very secure.
I came up with the idea of downloading notes to a CD and sending this instead.
Now all i have to do is find a away of encrypting the CD and decrypting it the other end.

Anyone have any ideas please?

many thanks

Geoff

A:free encryption software

Geoff,

I recommend you encrypt the files and not the CD.

Put all your files in a ZIP container and encrypt it with AES (that's an encryption option of your compression utility).
The names of your files will still be visible when someone opens the ZIP file, but the content not. The password is needed to view the content.
So don't put confidential information in the filename.

7-zip is a free compression utility with support for the ZIP format and AES encryption.

The advantage of using the ZIP format is that it is widely used, and that the users of your CD might already have an application that supports encrypted ZIP (like WinZIP).

The remaining problem is key management: how to you get the encryption key securely to your users, and changing keys.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any good backup software?

Preferably something that can be set on a schedule so it would pop up and remind me to stick in a DVD to burn to etc, windows has some backup software which can be set to run on schedule but it doesn't burn to DVD/CD/whatever and if I set it to backup to a removable media and it can't find it when the scheduled time rolls around well rather than notifying me it just ignores it. I have set it to backup to my secondary drive regularly but I would prefer to burn the backups to DVD

So generally at the mo my backup routine is whenever I remember I burn a few DVDs but I would like something a bit more reliable (as I am prone to forget these things!)

I've used Nero 6 for CD/DVD burning software when in XP but my Nero version does not work in W 7.

My W7 system came with pre-installed Power2Go software which works fine but the installed free version does not allow what Nero called several burning sessions: where you can burn something and on another day come back and burn something else to the same CD/DVD.

Rather than pay for the full version of Power2Go (which apparently provides that function), is there a free software that has that capability?

Thanks.

I currently use the free version of Zone Alarm. But I find it frustrating that it strictly looks to the IE for updating. Even worse, the IE7 shows a blank page and says 'connecting' and stays there, putting CPU usage 100%.

I'm considering looking for a potentially good, but free firewall progra that might do better than Zone Alarm and not connect to IE everytime for update. Any ideas?
