BSOD even after fresh format and install

Q: BSOD even after fresh format and install

Hi , In summer 09 i upgraded everything but my PSU and GPU due to some bits of my PC getting damaged in transit.
I installed win7x64 and ever since I have had problems. I used to get problems when playing Heroes of Newerth with random game crashes and exits. Then i started to get bluescreens which were apparently being caused by AVG. I uninstalled AVG and started getting BSOD which were apparently caused by ATI GPU drivers.
So... i reformatted and gave a fresh install of Windows and have started getting blue screens again after I started playing Fallout3. Also, sometimes the screen will freeze but I can still hear people talking on voice coms etc so i get the impression the system is still running (this also happend before the reformat and install).

Please help , this has been annoying me for ages now.

Much thanks , prza

Preferred Solution: BSOD even after fresh format and install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi and welcome
These two probably caused by your video driver.
I would
un-installl it and re-install a fresh copy

Run a system file check
type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

if the BSOD's continue we can get more aggressive.

Hi Could anyone please confirm if I buy Samsung 850 Evo 500GB, will I be able to install this on my desktop? Just looks like it only fits for laptops?

Thank you

There are adapters available if the drive doesn't come with them packaged. The adapters adapt from 3.5" drive bay to 2.5" drive bay.

Hi all,
I am new to this forum..
To start, I had just bought an ASUS computer.. wanting to play games like borderlands 1, left for dead 2 etc. But, when I was very trilled waiting to start the games, both of them had blacked screen and forced shutdown my computer every time after the game has been launched!
I had done many researches in the net, changing the registry values in directx11, reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers (halfway black screen upon reinstalling), changing the compatibility to Windows 7, adding missing physxcudart_20 to the games...None of them works..T-T
Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:Unable to install Nvidia driver and also to play games on Windows 8.1

I'd recommend to do the following:

Perform a clean install of Windows

Re-install Nvidia drivers
Download CPU-Z and GPU-Z (or any CPU and GPU monitoring software)
Monitor both while attempting to play games - check for temperature spikes.
Doing the above will help you rule out a lot of potential issues that are causing your problems. The clean windows install will get rid of any OS related issues. You never want to touch the windows registry unless you really have to, especially if you're not very well versed in the way it works. It can cause way more harm than good. With that said, the system crashes were probably due to a bad driver instillation and was causing a BSOD - most modern systems are set to restart / shutdown when this happens. You'll never know it happened unless you changed the configuration to stop the automatic shutdown. It could also be temperature related, if your CPU or GPU overheats, it'll typically trigger a system crash as well and result in the same BSOD sequence.

Let me know how it goes after you've tried what I've mentioned.

I recently cloned my old 160gb hdd on to a new 1tb hdd, then proceeded to format my old hdd. After formating it had lost 128gb only showing 32gb. I have checked for partitions (unallocated) but none can be found. Even tried remapping mbr, with no result. Any help to recover my lost storage space would be great.

Hey guys, I've just upgraded my 5 year old pc with almost everything new. I got an Asus Maximus VII Ranger & an i7-4790k cpu & other new stuff except my graphics card & ram, 2 x 8gb Hyper X Fury 1600mhz. What I don't understand is reading the manual about the speed of ram I can install.

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 3200(O.C.)/3100(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2500(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory *
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
* Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs.

I would like to install higher speed rams like 2400mhz or higher if possible (are there even 3000++ mhz ddr available? Looking at my local shop, 2400mhz ddr3 is the highest) without overclocking but I'm lost at the " (O.C) " bit. Do I need to overclock them to get at that speed or can I just get rams that are made at that speed? Thanks!

A:Need info on RAM to install on new mobo

The OC means you will need to OC your motherboard to use RAM rated at that speed. If you are not planning on OCing, just get the 1600/1333 Mhz modules.

BTW the average person would never notice the differences in RAM speeds. Memory is not the bottleneck in computing.

Recently something strange happened with my pc and every keyboard I tried to use doesn't work.So I thought by formatting it the issue might be fixed, but since keyboards don't work I can't enter boot menu.Is there any other way to format it?

A:How to format my pc without entering bios?

You will have to remove the hard drive and format it in another pc.
But you can't install Windows O/S on the second pc as it won't run on your original pc.
After you have formatted the hard drive and fitted it back in the original pc, you might find the keyboard works properly again.
This assumes that you have the original Windows DVD and product key, or you have a saved image of your 'C' drive complete to copy back again.
( I would be more worried about why none of your keyboards work, but if you can reinstall Windows again that would solve any keyboard driver issues anyway.)
Hope that makes sense.

Hello hello After having a problem with my cd dvd drive I rebooted my computer and did a clean install of Windows from my Vista So right now I m running Windows Windows not install (Touch/slider) FN - 7 Clean Keys working I have a VAIO - VGN-CS J Windows looks and feels great so far The only problem is my little sliding touch pad at the top doesn t work I don t know if it s FN keys but on top of my keyboard there s a little sliding touch pad for volume along with a fast forward rewind key I used to be able to slide the volume up from there but now it s not working I looked it up and I know this has to do with my clean install of windows I tried installing a bunch of drivers like everyone said online Sony Shared Libraries Vaio Event Notebook Control Device And a bunch of other drivers that people talked about I don t know what s wrong but it s still not working so I did a system restore to before I installed everything so that I can have a clean slate Can someone please help me fix my volume control slider please Thank you so much nbsp

A:Clean install Windows 7 - FN Keys (Touch/slider) not working

Laptops have extras over and above Windows and if you reinstall the OS or upgrade it you lose these. I've been there and done that with the FZ. It was broken when I bought it and the hard drive had been removed. Fixing the computer was very hard, installing Windows 7 was easy. Afterwards, like yourself I found that the function keys didn't work. Trawling forums and looking for drivers then sorting it out took ages and that was the most challenging part of the whole exercise. Everything necessary was on the Sony support sites but these were not user friendly and I needed to use several Sony sites. Needless to say Sony support were clueless. In the end I got everything functioning but if you can manage with things as they are I'd not bother. One tip, although it might not work with your particular Vaio model is that stuff has to be installed in a particular order otherwise some keys don't work.

That'll teach you to mess with Windows when a cd/dvd plays up.

Hello all,

I've recently bought a HP Pavilion 15-n252sq laptop, with Free Dos - unfortunately I can't install Windows 7 over it, due to the following error I keep receiveing in the Installation screen:

"Select the driver to be installed" - and regardless of the paths I have and the available folders, I can not seem to proceed wtih the W7 installation.

Please notice that, I've tried to use both a W7 DVD and also a bootable USB drive (and yes, connected in the USB 2.0 port and not USB 3.0 ) - but I always get to the same point where I have to select drivers.

Please also notice that the BIOS doesn't allow me to make any modifications except for some minor ones (like select boot priority, or enable USB 3.0), as the rest of the MAIN features are greyed out .

Can anyone please help me with this issue?

Regards,
Adrian

Hello. recently I have been getting the Drive e needs to be formatted before it can be used. However, I have no drive e. there are no flash drives or sd cards plugged in, its a laptop so it has the normal c drive and the system d drive (ie 1 hard drive). Just format it, you shouldn't get further prompts. Then you can see if it's another partition on your main HDD or not.

I bought a Samsung 840 SSD (120GB) for my gigabyte GA-770T-USB3 motherboard. I am unable to install win 7 64bit on it. It is a SATA SSD.

I have tried ACHD mode in the BIOS, I have tried IDE mode. The drive works as I have tested it as an external drive on other computers.

I bought the drive specifically to be used as a primary drive.

My regular hard drives work fine on the motherboard.

Well, first of all, your motherboard only supports 3GB/s and the 840 is a 6GB/s drive. Just by that you won't really get your moneys worth. And how so are you unable to install? Also can you please list your system specs?

By any chance could you post a picture of your computer as it is hooked up right now so we can see if your missing anything. Try to check if the 4pin/8pin connector on the motherboard is hooked up and check for tightness of all the Motherboard connectors to start with.

Hi All,

I have made a new rig and wanted to transfer the video/music from old IDE hard drive.

I have tried two IDE to USB convertors and when I try to access my old hard driver from My Computer I receive the error "Format Disk"

I have restarted my PC and now it doesn't even detect it!

A:Format Disk Error with IDE to USB Converter

Sounds like the partition table is messed up on the IDE hdd. The data is still there, but windows just cannot figure out how to "read" that drive. More than likely you'll need a 3rd party application to view the data on the drive and copy it accordingly. I use UFS explorer in the shop to recover data from customers' hdds http://www.ufsexplorer.com/download_std.php There are many other 3rd party data recovery programs/application out there, just google it & I'm sure you'll find one that fits your needs.

Post back, Hope this helps!!

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone might have an idea how to fix this.

I regularly plug in my laptop to my television to game or work and have had no issues other than some colors being slightly different. I played with the color settings and got it close, but the tweaker in me remembered reading that some people were getting more true color using the ycbcr444 color display settings. However, I didn't realize that my television does not support this format and now am unable to revert it back.

Is anyone aware of a way to do a full reset of the Nvidia control panel settings? I can't switch the color display modes for the external monitor if I do not have one plugged in, so this becomes a catch-22

I reinstalled Windows 7 (64bit) after moving to an SSD. Now, for some mysterious reason, I can no longer read UDF format discs (all Blueray and some DVD's are UDF).

Microsoft's Knowledge Base posts a "hotfix", but it didn't work.

I searched online and lots of people seem to have this same problem, but no one has a fix.

How is it I can WRITE udf discs but not READ them? What a pain.

(Note: I can read the discs in XP and Linux, just not Win7. Copying the discs to the HDD every time I want to read them is not a long-term solution. And I can't copy commercial BD discs anyway.)

A:Can't read UDF format discs (Win7)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321640 is for XP, but does contain some useful information and possible work-rounds. At a guess, I would expect MS to address whatever they have done wrong before too long. In the meantime, an update of the Win7 DVD driver (and/or firmware) for your actual hardware might be available. Try the website of your DVD manufacturer.

At worst, if there is no software solution within a couple of months, you might have to consider replacing the drive, at least you can return a new drive if it fails you too.

Hey Everyone,

I'm not sure whether this is the correct place to post this (I'm new here). Sorry if it's the wrong place!

So my problem is I am running a laptop on windows XP. Every time I start up the computer, it prompts me to install device drivers (HID-compliant devices and stuff). The weird part is, I've already installed those drivers when I first got the computer. I've learned to just press cancel every time those prompts pop up, but I'm wondering if I'm able to stop them from popping up every single time I start the computer. I'm also curious as to why it's doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi I have an all in one hp touch smart 520 pc and I have had it for about 2 years now and it doesn't do well with games and I was wondering if I can install a new better graphics card? if so can you recommend me one ?

A:Can I install a new graphics card on an All in one HP Touchsmart 520 PC?

I did some research and I found this
[
Expansion Slots:
1 PCI Express x16 module socket for MXM graphics card
2 PCI Express x1 mini card sockets
and
One PCI Express x16 Module (MXM) socket
MXM version: Type B
Power source = 19V
UMA or MXM Graphic card not exceeding 35W TDP
That is direct from HP. I asked today, because of your answers, HP support and I got the answer, that a Type II video card shut work as a upgrade on the inglewood motherboard. And don't worry. Bestbuy in Canada will upgrade the card in the store. But thank you anyway!

]
[
Yes, the MOTHERBOARD has those slots, no it is not upgradable after purchase, but good luck with that ]

apperantly the hp touchsmart 520 was never meant for gaming of high caliber and it cannot be upgraded :S

What is the make and model of your laptop? Have you changed anything in your Bios other then updating to the latest version? Did you update to the latest version of the bios before or after you started having problems?

I just received two new TB hdds from newegg and would like advice on the best process to go with Here s what I want to accomplish Put a fresh install of the current OS Windows Pro OEM software onto one of the new drives I ve read OEM software is not fully install-able 7 to rig, Adding Win fresh on put x64 to it want HDD on a blank hdd in some cases but maybe that referred to OEM win Home Edition which comes from a store like a Dell I bought this OEM Pro from Newegg Adding HDD to rig, want to put fresh Win 7 x64 on it when I built the machine Need to eventually move a bunch of my files off the old hdd The old hdd is a WD TB only sata and rpm I also need a Adding HDD to rig, want to put fresh Win 7 x64 on it solid backup process Adding HDD to rig, want to put fresh Win 7 x64 on it put in place so was considering RAID setup using both the new drives Does that require any special hardware or cabling or is it all done behind the scenes with normally installed sata drives I won t hit near TB for a long time so maybe I just go with one new drive internal for everything and use the old drive as an external use for back up and save the additional new drive for who knows what Couldn t help it they were dollars I have no enclosure at the moment so is it possible to leave the old drive in the rig and somehow make it not bootable Can I simply not point the BIOS to it and problem solved I built this rig so know my way around the system pretty well However I ve never done this kind of upgrade before Thanks for any input you folks can give nbsp

A:Adding HDD to rig, want to put fresh Win 7 x64 on it

Backup: if your MOBO supports RAID, you can configure the 2TB drives in a RAID 1 array. Basically, anything written to the 2TB drive will get copied to the other too - you have a mirror image. Personally, I'd use the drives in a normal way, and just use the 2nd drive to backup essential data on a regular basis using a tool such as Windows Backup (built in to Win7).

Installing fresh OS: Install one of your 2TB drives into PC. Use Disk Manager to rename your current HDD to X:, or something. Not C: or whatever you have it currently set to. Format the 2TB drive, set it to C:.

Yank the original HDD cables from the PC, and install Win7 normally on the 2TB drive. I like to do this to reduce the options, sometimes install screws up.. After you are done, install the 2nd 2TB drive, and reconnect the original HDD. Before booting, check BIOS to make sure that the HDD order is set to the 2TB drive you freshly installed Windows on (having only this drive in the PC, means you can check BIOS for the identifiable tag to not mix them up).

Moving files: The old HDD should now be accessible, as a second drive. Format the 2nd 2Tb drive at this time too. In terms of drive lettering: I have C: as my boot, E: as my data, and X: as my 'backup' drive. I shove things like my Docs, Music, Pics, Steam games, Downloads on the backup drive. I don't feel the need to have it mirrored.

Hope this helps.

A:Data recovery from drive with lost format, software recommendations please

Oh crap. Something like this happened recently to me when I had backed up some data to an USB thumb drive. It worked fine for awhile, then some weeks later, my PC just couldn't read it anymore (kept saying "disk in drive needs to be reformatted/etc"...and the properties for the drive also showed it as RAW format instead of FAT32 like it would have been usually).

I think the issue is drive corruption, which seems to be fairly common with external devices like USB drives, but odd in the case of an internal drive. The remedy for me was to try to access it from a different system, which was easy since being a USB stick I could try it elsewhere easily. If you can use another system to access the drive, preferably a Linux/Ubuntu based one; it is likely your best bet to recoup the data before its lost permanently. An external HDD kit would be ideal, and they are quite cheap also.

Hope this helps!

I have an old 2 1/2" HD from a previous laptop that I have successfully convrted into a external harddrive with an appropriate HD Enclosure, and recovered whatever data I wanted onto my new win8 laptop.

since I no longer need the operating system, the data, or the partitions on this reborn external harddrive since I would like to use it for backups/ storage, it makes sense to me to wipe it clean to start afresh. does reformatting essentially wipe it free of data and restore as a single volume?Click to expand...

YES

since I have never formatted or wiped a hard drive in my life and a quick google search suggests I can format a new harrdrive (no mention about an old one!) with Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management (pic uploaded I hope) I dont really understand what the four sections represent on Disk 0 (the new lappies harddrive) and they dont appear seperately as far as I can tell on file explorer. Disk 1 does however appear as drives E F G H when plugged in (though E is completely empty)Click to expand...

Let's make sure you never get these mixed up.
get a command prompt (click start and in the SEARCH box enter CMD hit enter.
In the new window, enter DISKMGMT
In the Disk Mgmt window, there's two major sections: Upper half and bottom half and this is where you see Disk 0, Disk 1, ...
Mine show three blocks Recovery, Win7-OS (C and one with only a size and 'healthy'
The biggest block should be your Windows partition and have status like

Healthy (Boot, Page file, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
For my system(s), I did a right-click on this partition -> properties -> General Tab and created the name WIN7-OS
so that I never screw-up.

For your DISK 1; do the same thing and give a name like EXT_HD
TAKE NOTICE OF THE DRIVE LETTER (I'll assume it's Z: below)

anyway, if anyone can explain in simple id-iot-proof language that I cant screw-up how to wipe clean Disk 1 into a single usable 300GB volume I would be a happy bunny.Click to expand...

Assuming you've given disk 1 this name, in the command window, enter the following:
Format Z: /X /FS:NTFS /V:EXT_HD

aditionally I would appreciate any comments as to a good strategy for backing up (I thought I would initially make a full image of the harddrive, then just periodically save just the data manually) is it possible to boot from the image if required? (I could always just plug in the 2 1/2" into the drive bay if the computer doesnt support booting via the USB)Click to expand...

Let's deal with that after the above is completed

I bought a Crucial M4 SSD (64g) for my PC but it appears it's supposed to plug into a laptop how do I hook it up to my motherboard/is it possible?

A:How do I install my SSD in a desktop?

The SSD will need 2 connections:
- SATA cable which goes to the motherboard, should come with your motherboard or you can buy one for very cheap
- Power connector which comes from the power supply.

They're the same cables as what your existing HDD is connected to.

just recently received my Samsung SSD to install my windows 7 ultimate finally after a bit of time messing with that I got windows completely installed so I can either boot off the hdd or my ssd. I have had no luck figuring out how to get drivers from the hdd to ssd though. I can't even get on internet to try looking for drivers. so I tried backing up drivers on the double driver program I've tried burning backup divers to disk. can someone please tell me how to my drivers restored on my ssd!

A:Fresh install OS to SSD driver backup

I have no idea why you can't get on the internet. By default windows 7 has supports almost every (if not every) on board ethernet ports. If not then you'll have to get at least the lan drivers for your motherboard and then download the rest of the drivers you need once you get the onboard land running.

Is this a laptop, desktop ? If its a desktop did you build it yourself? If not what make model is it? You can go online to the manufacturuers website and download device drivers for your laptop/desktop.

If it is something you (or someone else) built then there should be a driver disk that came with your motherboard.

Alternatively you could use driver genius to get the job done. I'm not sure if the "free" version allows you to backup drivers but I know the paid one does.

It could just be a bad sd card. They won't last forever.

What I would do (aside from what you've already done) is put the micro sd card in its full sd adapter (that came with it I'm sure) and then put that in a camera and format it there.

As of now, I am running on a low spec laptop. My Inspiron 1545, it currently has 2.20GHz 2.19 GHz and 3.00GB installed on it. It has an integrated graphics card and video card. The only game I'm planning to run on it is TF2. I currently get about 10 - 15 fps on a normal game of 12 people. I have an fps script that makes the game look like nintendo 64 graphics and have tweaked some of the models. I know that I can't install / upgrade my graphics or video card, so I was planning to get more RAM to increase the speed of gaming.

My question is, can I install more RAM into my laptop? If so, then where do I buy it and how do I install it?

A:Install more RAM?

mm yes you can install more ram, its pretty easy, takes a screw driver and taking out two screws

looks like it can handle up to 8 gigs of ram, ddr2 800 sdram.

Make sure you have a 64 bit os to utilize more than 3gigs of ram.

Yes. You'll need to remove the motherboard in order to install the hardware on the backside of it. I have an Antec 300 case and when I installed a CM Hyper 212+, I removed the the board from the case.

Hello maaz, I do believe a GTX 460 would fit inside of the case, but it would be a tight fit, also, you'd need to upgrade your PSU to handle the new GPU.
How much are you looking to spend?

I have two identical precision 470 stock computers with 550w power supply and 3.2 XEON IRWINDALE single core. Since the MOBO is dual core capable; can I take the core from one and put it in the other, without any other upgrades?

A:Install two cores into Precison 470

It all depends on the BIOS firmware, and the motherboard. IF the boards are identical, and have the same BIOS release (or a newer one than the original) then you should be fine.

Doesn't take much to find out though if you have both computers in front of you.

I have an older Dell Latitude laptop in which I would like to upgrade the processor.
I purchased the machine as a refurbished model. It has Win7 installed, The typical office programs 2007.

I writing to ask if there is a way to upgrade the CPU without having to disturb the overall OS configuration? If not can someone either give me direction as to how one goes about doing this (w/o WIN7 disc) or a link to where I could get direction as to how to reinstall after the upgrade.
Thank you.

Have an external WD USB/Fire Wire Combo drive. The 120GB IDE drive failed with constant clicking sounds when powered and a failure to load the USB driver. I opened the case and replaced the WD1200 with a new WD200JB IDE drive. The drive now loads USB correctly and appears in disk management as unformatted. When I proceed with formatting it either fails as incomplete or forever reports formatting but no hard drive activity is taking place. I have tried connecting it directly to the IDE connector on the motherboard and have the same result.

A:USB drive will not format

Sounds like the new hard disk might be faulty. I'd recommend you get a replacement from the place you purchased it from.

Especially if it will not format when connected via the motherboard using a PATA connector.

Hi all i have what porbably are dumb questions but i need clarification all the same please i just bought a XFX HD GPU upon your recomendation and was wondering if i should uninstall all the nVidia stuff in add and remove except the driver before i remove the card or just remove the card install my new one then uninstall the nvidia stuff I have a spare gigabyte GT GPU which i would like to give to my dad as he has an old Pack-Bell iMedia which he uses in the lounge to watch Uninstall for installation? drivers fresh GPU films on and browse the net Uninstall drivers for fresh GPU installation? The PSU in this old machine is only a watt and the GT reqiures a w minimum but as he wont be playing games or doing any photo editing etc only watching mp films would the PSU still power it reason i ask is it has a HDMI connection and his stock card is the old blue pin plug so i thought is would get a better pic using my new card also the GT is mb and the stock one is only mb Your thoughts please Thanks Lee nbsp

A:Uninstall drivers for fresh GPU installation?

1. Yes, you can remove all the Nvidia components through Add/Remove, although it's probably easier to download a utility such as Driver Sweeper which will remove the driver, PhysX, HD audio, Update etc in one move... Just remember that the system will likely revert to a lower VGA (640 x 480) screen resolution.
You can then power down, replace the card and install the driver/catalyst control centre etc.
Once you're up and running it would pay to bring up the Device Manager, click the "View" tab and check "Show hidden devices", then expand the "Display adapters" heading. If your previous card shows up -right click and select uninstall.

2. You say that your dad's computer is an "old Pack-Bell..". Power supplies gradually lose their effective output over time as components in the power supply wear, so his 250w PSU is likely much less. The GT210 isn't a power hog by any means (30.5w max) but picking up a suitable (and relatively cheap) PSU might be a good investment in any case, especially if the computer/PSU are 5+ years old.

I was using the pen drive (a monster 16GB one) in a Net Cafe when suddenly I got a message and it went bonk. I had 16 GB data in it.

Now I brought it to office. Now.

It won't get detected.
Even disk mgt. does not recognize it.
This happens in every computer.
Can't format also. Says No drive.. insert a disk.

It has to be a virus I think since our local Net Cafes are full of viruses. I tried various tools I downloaded but none of them even detect the disk. Other USB Pen drives work in my machine.

It shows the PEN drive with a drive letter (I) in the Windows Explorer but when I double click it, it says Please insert a disk into drive I:.

My OS Is XP Pro V 2002 SP 3.

As mentioned in another Thread "FILE RECOVERY", I'm trying to reinstall XP on my friends PC. This PC was built by a friend of his some years ago, and he has since died. My friend never got any Install discs from his friend.

I've got XP installed using my Install disc, but now it's looking for the 25 character product key for XP. I tried using mine but it said it was invalid.

Any suggestions as to how I can input a product key. I'm getting a message that system will run for 30 days, but I've got to activate XP somehow.

This will give you the Windows license key. At least if you click on "Software" > "licenses", it will. The trouble is, I don't know if it will tell you the key that's supposed to be there, or the key that actually is. The expected product key is written to "C:/", so you might luck out. Anyway, it's worth a shot. That's all I know.

A:Started format, won't boot, need to recover 10 years worth of kids photos

Did you actually start a format or just start a reinstall of the OS? If it's the latter I would say boot from an Ubuntu disk and recover your files pretty simply. If you actually started a format I'm not sure. Maybe one of the other guys here will have more info on that. There might be some sort of utility you can have on a bootable CD that will scan the disk for recoverable files, but I've been out of that side of things for a while now.

I cant seem to isolate the problem down to one part
any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated
i have a hunch that its the power supply not being able to handle everything but cant seem to verify

A:Stuck at black screen during install

I would try removing as many non-essential things from the machine to start with (sound cards, maybe half your RAM, USB devices other than kb+mouse, firewire devices, etc.) Also, you might want to check your bios to see if there's a special setting for memory while installing an OS. I doubt your problem is your powersupply if you can run for 4 hours on a memtest and I doubt it's really the mem if you're not getting any failures. Last thing I'd try is swapping out a video card - I did have an issue once where I'd freeze and couldn't believe it was the video card causing it till I popped that card into another machine and the same thing happened.

A:New video card install.. black screen?

I would first go into your motherboards BIOS and check and see if any video options are selected. Like, use only (onboard video), or use a (video card) only, or see if things are set to just (automatic detect). I'm having a funny little feeling that somewhere during this process, your systems BIOS has got haywire. If things are set in your BIOS as they should be I would recommend re-setting the BIOS, mainly done by a special CMOS jumper located on the motherboard. If you not know what I am talking about, please supply your motherboards make & model and we will see if we can guide you through the process.

If you look under Device Manager when on Win 7 you should be able to get the name of the wireless card. And then do a search for XP drivers for that device. You will also need the chipset drivers for the motherboard for XP, those should be available from the manufacturer's site.

A:I cannot format new drive

The drive could be dead.

Delete the partition(s) in Disk Management (in computer management in admin tools control panel) and recreate one. Then do a quick format and see if it completes.

After it formats (or even if it doesn't) you should download Data LifeGuard Diagnostics (WD's diagnostic tool) and check the drive to help verify it is good before you start putting a lot of data on it.

A:How to format 1TB drive to FAT32

Windows XP can not format fat32 beyond 32 gb -- you need another system to do that.

However, Fat32 over a 1 TB filesystem will have HUGE cluster sizes and waste most of the space. NTFS is a much better choice.

What's the issue with accessing the device in NTFS?

Hello guys......I need your help....I have sony vaio vgn-fs515b and after installing windows 7 i was updating its bios......!!!!

Everything was working fine but in between a blue screen came. It said that your system is shutting down due to some problem and at the end it said:

"Dumping physical memory".

When i restarted my laptop all the light were on but nothing came on screen. I don't know what to do.......Please help me........!!!!

I know this happened because of incomplete upgradation of bios but what should i do not?

A:Sony Vaio VGN-FS515b doesn't start after BSOD

The motherboards bios is corrupt. You may be able to correct this if you can pull the CMOS battery and reconnect it. Otherwise the motherboard will have to be replaced

Hi everyone.

I have recently installed windows 7 home premium on to my laptop, which did have vista. Since the install it wont let me use programs such as windows dvd maker, windows media center. It displays a message saying "The video card on this computer doesent meet the minimum requirements for this program" however i used to programs fine on vista. Also i can no longer find the settings for my graphics. I have a samsung r700 with an NVIDIA graphics card. I know it can be a real pain in the *** to upgrade a graphics card in a notebook, I would just like to know if there is an alternate solution to upgrade something that will enable me to use these programs.

Thanks guys

You need to install the correct display drivers for your card to work.

The old hard drive completely failed to the point that I am unable to recover any data on it. So I put in a new hard drive and went to reinstall Vista and got the lovely error about needing to load a driver for the hard drive. I've tried every Vista driver listed and it won't load the driver for the hard drive. I flashed the BIOS, still no luck. The BIOS does not offer any options to change the settings on how to read the hard drive.

Any suggestions on what else I could try?

A:HP Pavilion dv6911om - unable to install Vista on new hard drive

Somewhere in your bios there will be a setting to select which mode the hard drive is running in. You may well have a SATA drive which Vista should have drivers for but in this case you need to set the hard drive to run in IDE mode then it should install. After installation load all the mobo drivers which should then allow you to set the HD back to sata/raid operation which is much faster.

I had two 1TB Seagate hd's set up in RAID 0 config. I updated the BIOS on my motherboard and naturally in reset my RAID controller. Since then I have put in a Seagate 2TB XT drive and taken out the other two drives.
Whenever I plug my two original RAID 0 drives into my system it only shows the drives having approximately 100MB of space on each.
I can go to the format function but even if I don't do a quick format it only takes 2 to 5 seconds to format the drives.
I "really" want to format the whole 1TB drive. How do I do this?

A:How do I format my hard drives?

I'm not too familiar with RAID setups, so you might want to wait for another member of the site to respond to this,

Go to Start > right click on My Computer go to Manage. From here, on the left side select Disk Management In here should list the drives and all the partitions on the drives. Are you able to screenshot and attach it to your next reply?

Post back with what you find.

The other day i turned it on and connected it to my computer(running win 7), Unfortunately a message came up that windows needed to format the hard drive(200 GB) before it could use it, In my computer it is named as local disk(drive name) which use to have the externals name.

I have too much needed files to lose or to be formated, I checked disk management and the drive was healthy but the file system was RAW,I checked it with the chdsk(spelling) but all checked files were unreadable.

Is there any way that i can use my external again? I appreciate any help at all.

A:Windows wants to format my external USB hard drive!

Your file system on the external drive has become corrupt. You could try to run chkdsk /r on it which may fix the problem but, and this is a big but, it might damage some of your files.

The safer bet is to use an Ubuntu Live CD, follow this guide.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery

After you have rescued your files you should then run the hard drive diagnostics for windows which you can download from the drive's manufacturer's site. If all is well you can then reformat to the NTFS file system and it should be usable again.

I just found this which you may find easier and it says it can be used on a drive that has changed to a RAW file system. (It appears to be free but no guarantee)

A:How to install Win 7 on second HDD

You need to convert the disc from Dynamic to Basic.

How to Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk
To change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk:
Back up all the data on all the volumes on the disk you want to convert to a basic disk.
Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
In the left pane, click Disk Management.
Right-click a volume on the dynamic disk that you want to change to a basic disk, and then click Delete Volume.
Click Yes when you are prompted to delete the volume.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each volume on the dynamic disk.
After you have deleted all the volumes on the dynamic disk, right-click the dynamic disk that you want to change to a basic disk, and then click Convert to Basic Disk.

NOTE:You must right-click the gray area that contains the disk title on the left side of the Details pane. For example, right-click Disk 1.Click to expand...

Hi there I just bought a new Samsung printer model no CLX- series It is a multifunction color laser printer The disc that Samsung issued me with for installation is How new multifunction network? printer I can install Samsung wireless onto not working I have attempted to install it by doing what it says I set up the printer and connected the printer to the wireless router via ethernet cable I searched using wireless setup option How can I install new Samsung multifunction printer onto wireless network? on the disk for the computer on the network It reported back that it could not find it so I was unable to install it wirelessly as it says it is not connected to the LAN network which it is I then plugged it in via USB and attempted to install it via the disc This did not work so I tried to do it through windows This worked and I was able to print from the desktop through the USB This is all good and well but we have other computers on the network and they can t print Any help would be much appreciated We have a netgear wireless router by the way we ethernet ports and attempting to install on Vista There is another Vista computer and Macs on the network nbsp

A:How can I install new Samsung multifunction printer onto wireless network?

To set up the printer for wireless use you need to assign it an IP address which it will transmit for the PC's in the network to log on to. If the printer does not have its own screen it will need to be connected by cable to a PC in order to do this.

If the setup disc will not run get a replacement as you need to install the printer drivers in all your PC's.

If you cannot replace the disc you will have to go the the Samsung site and download the drivers from there that are for your OS's.

As you now have the printer running off one PC you will need to install the printer drivers on the other PC's and then activate printer sharing. If I new what OS you are using on all the PC's I could give more details.

Try something like GetDataBack and see if it can find the data. Kinda weird you've lost so many drives in such a short time period. I've had two die in the last 10 years. In both cases I was able to get my data off before I lost them completely.

A:Laptop is telling me I need to format my drive and its already formatted

I take it this is an external drive yeah?

First thing to check, is the drive plugged into another computer. I sometimes have this issue with my SD cards from my digital camera in Windows7. If I boot into Linux it works immediately without any issue whatsoever.

It sounds to me like it was disconnected in the middle of a read/write operation and as such, something has corrupted, and is making the disk act like it needs formatting.

It is most likely a boot sector problem, which is very hard to resolve in most cases. Given that you've made no comment about backups, I'm guessing you have none.

You can try one of two things in my opinion:

1. Click this link, read the information here and use the software to fix your boot record. You accept the risks, and if you lose data its not my fault.
2. You can download a copy of Ubuntu, which is a Linux operating system, and burn the image you download to a CD. You can then use the disc to boot into Ubuntu, and if your lucky you can mount your hard disk that way, and then simply copy all the data over to your laptop hard disk, then boot back into Windows and format the hard disk, and copy the data back over once again.
3. There is a third option, but not really recommended by me... that is to format the hard disk, and then immediately run a deep scan using Recuva to recover the previously lost data. Its pretty effective, but its likely you'll lose something - Its also crucial you do not write anything to the disk once you've formatted it, as anything overwriting the previously formatted data will stop it from being recovered.

Other ways include removing records for the particular disk from the registry, which I won't recommend due to your own admission of it needing to be simple, and because you risk serious damage to your operating system should you do it incorrectly.

A:Looking to install a new processor and add hard drive need help finding them

You won't be able to (about a 10% chance you even could) replace the CPU, because its unlikely the motherboard's BIOS will support any significant change to CPU to make it worthwhile.

As for the hard disk, you need a 2.5" hard disk. You could probably get a 1TB version, but its likely to cost you.

Anti-virus: I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, or AVG Free Edition 2011.
Spyware/malware: I recommend Malwarebytes.

A:Cannot install Windows on WD 500GB SATA hard drive!

You can try to change the SATA controller mode (in the BIOS) to IDE mode. Windows XP setup should continue without a problem. You could keep the mode set to SATA or AHCI but you then need to install the appropriate SATA/RAID drivers at the F6 prompt at the beginning of Windows Setup. However, you will need a floppy drive for that. If you don't have a floppy drive, you can try making a slipstream CD which is a Windows CD with the SATA/RAID drivers included. Google, Bing or whatever to find several guides on how to create a slipstream CD.

Hey guys,

Windows Vista 32-bit
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual core processor 6400 +
2gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT

So I went to Nvidia and downloaded the latest driver, at the time it was 260.89 I believe and it failed, and so does the most current driver (260.99). But when I tried to download it my first time (260.89), it totally changed everything:

1. Now I can't play ANY games because it gives me error messages like "Unable to initialize renderer"
2. DxDiag only shows "N/A" next to basically everything under the Display tab.
3. The sleep option is now grayed out

Whenever I try to download the drivers again the Graphics Driver installation always fails.

So what the hell happened? Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Nvidia 260.99 graphics driver install failed

Hi Nohone welcome to Techspot,

have you tried doing a rollback on the graphics card? this will hopefully revert your drivers back to the origional setup. You can do this from the hardware setup OR via system restore and re-set your computer BACK to a date before you installed the drivers. This wont effect your personal files but MAY effect any new software you may have installed.

Also make sure you ahve downloaded the correct drivers for it i.e. the VISTA-32 bit drivers instead of the VISTA-64 bit drivers.

A link for the latest driver for your graphics card can be found here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-32bit-260.99-whql-driver.html

Hope this helps
James
