New PC build turns off within a sec of power on

Q: New PC build turns off within a sec of power on

I just built a new i3 SB machine with a gigabit board. It was working fine for 3 dys put win 7 on it, but now all of a sudden it just shuts off as soon as i press the power button.

I took the board out and looked at it and i powered it on outside the case but it still does it. Everything looks kosher to me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: New PC build turns off within a sec of power on

Could be a few issues, maybe the power button is getting stuck in and just powering down the machine.
Mobo or PSU might be defective.
What I would do is unplug all hardware and just use the bare minimum and see if it still powers down.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I am having a bit of a problem. Just put together a new box and I can get it to turn on but there is nothing on screen. The screen actually goes into power save mode like it doesnt even know the computer is on. This is only my second build. Everything in the box turns on but the keyboard and mouse dont light up. specs are-phenom 2 940, gigabyte ma790gp, corsair tx650w, 4gb g-skill 1066, 9800gt, wd caviar 640gb, antec 900. Any help at all would be great.

A:New build turns on, no bios

This is one of those baffling questions that makes you pull your hair out. My approach is to always start with the least expensive and easiest options. Check all the connections first. It could be something as crazy as the cable or wire from the monitor to the computer being faulty. Do you have an extra monitor you can try? Work your way down to the motherboard being the very last suspect.

just "finished" a first time build. Had trouble with windows 7 at the beginning, kept freezing during setup of password and product key. After a number of tries it now just turns on for around 3 seconds and shuts off, then again for around 7 sec and turns off, repeats. Would love some insight on this issue. Thinking it might be the motherboard or pcu but dont really know how to tell.

specs: (the corsair power supply is actually 430W)

So far i have tried resetting ram, motherboard battery, pcu, pcu fan. external build with just power supply, pcu, and ram (did the same thing). Also went through those tomshardware checklists.

Hello its my first post!
Well anyways I just build my first ever pc using tutorials like (Austin Evans) well I build it turned it on, and all the fans would work then right after stop! Sometimes I get one bleep from the psu, What should I do as im really annoyed as I spent hours do this!

A:PC turns on then off (newly build)

Since you say the machine tries to boot, I'll assume the front panel connectors are correctly connected.
Make sure all cards, memory, and cables are properly seated. Including the 4pin/8pin motherboard power connector.
Try a different PSU. I had a PSU go out that acted this way, after an instant shutdown. Yours could be a DOA that acts the same way.
Try a single RAM module at a time. Switch modules if the first one doesn't help.
Try with all unnecessary components disconnected. Any damaged component can keep the PSU from receiving power good status.

Hello everyone.A few months ago i bought a bundle of parts in a special package from TigerDirect. I put the computer together and it boots fine. All lights turn on and fans are spinning, but no display comes up. I can't even get to a boot menu. All the parts are new so i doubt this is a problemof faulty equipment. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

This same problem was posted here by another member and I read the other thread responses, but no answer was discovered. I am having the same issue the system boots on its own every night. I have done all the scheduled task checks and disabled everything I could find, but it still turns itself on nightly.
I have checked the BIOS to no avail can't find anything there either. Looking for help. Thanks in advance!

A:My home build PC windows 7 turns itself on during the night.

You can always turn off the surge protector, then it can`t come on at all.

And you`ve already checked this, correct ?

And make sure "Allow this device to wake the PC" is unchecked.

However, small changes are there if you look. In build 10031, the Start menu has gained a degree of transparency. Windows 10 for phones also includes transparency on its Start menu, though the implementation is slightly different there?on the phone, it's the tiles that are translucent.

Going further back, build 10022 moved the new virtual desktop button from the middle of the screen to the right-hand side.

With the current Windows 10 preview still feeling very unfinished, particularly in areas such as the new settings app, the small scale of these changes is a little surprising.

Hi, since the power of my Y3P with display at max birghtness does not hold very long it would like to build a powerbank for it. Since the Power Adapter is 20V 2A I wonder if I could put 4 x 5V (2A) Power Banks in serial and have 20V and enough amps to fuel the Y3P. I also ordered a cable with the right plug to connect to the Y3P. However it has 3 wires inside. When mesuaring with a meter one is ground and two deliver about 5V. How could that be? How would you wire it to power the Y3P. Does anyone has any idea?PS: I know this is gonna wipe warranty.

Hello everyone - I have just assembled a new build It will not power up I need a suggestion to figure out if the problem is the case or the motherboard This is a mini-itx build power-up: power New or Build MB? no supply case's The case is New Build no power-up: case's power supply or MB? Linkworld LC - B This case comes with a volt watt external laptop-style power supply that plugs into the rear of the case just like New Build no power-up: case's power supply or MB? a laptop power supply plugs into a laptop - a barrel connector Inside this power connection connects to a power supply component that is not like a regular ATX power supply but is on a printed-circuit board New Build no power-up: case's power supply or MB? mounted on the case This has several capacitors and other stuff From that comes the -pin and -pin power supply lines for the motherboard I assume the -volt power supply for this external power supply unit is right since it came with the case It was watt The processor is an IBM t with TDP of watts Lower-powered CPUs can be put in a small so I assumed the power supply might be under-powered I ordered a -watt volt power supply with the right size barrel - and same polarity pos inside The MB is an ASRock H MV-ITX It is mini-itx form factor Still same problem Everything is connected correctly When I press the power-on button an external CD drive I have plugged-in spins up for a while But no power light comes on in the front of the case there are no POST beeps the fan for the CPU does not spin up No other signs of life So power is getting into the MB - the external CD drive is plugged into a USB socket in the rear panel of the MB After trying a watt and watt power supply I believe the problem cannot be the power supply cord Can it be that I have too little load I don t think so I plugged in another mm fan and an ol-fashion floppy drive just the power connection to add more load - same thing no power-up no POST nothing but the CD drive will spin up when I open-then-close it yet again So here is the help I need what else can I try -assuming the MB and case are fine is it more likely the case power supply is bad or the MB --Thanks nbsp

A:New Build no power-up: case's power supply or MB?

Well, I figured out the problem.
I am planning to re-do the older mini-itx system I have; it has gotten riddled with Trojan software for kids downloading games; it basically has been de-commissioned already.

So, I took the pico-psu power supply from that older computer, and hooked it up to the one I am making. Everything went perfectly.

So, I un-did that, removed the MB from case, disconnected the barrel-power connection from the case, unscrewed and removed the power supply that had been mounted in the case, put the pico-psu power supply back in place (I had to drill the hole for the barrel-connection out to be a little bigger since the pico-psu internal/external connection is threaded and held in place by nut with lock washer), and routed wires to be clear of cpu fan, screwed MB to stand-offs, and closed it all up.

now, everything is great. I like this linkworld case, but the power supply is worthless. I may try to get a few dollars back from the ebay vendor, to make me happy with a case that is less than what I should have gotten, but is working for me; I don't want to wait on returns, etc.

Well, first of all, are you sure it is a standard ATX? Some PBells didn't use standard wiring.

When you push power, you don't get lights, or fans spinning?

My computer has been running amazingly untill about a week ago it started shutting off right in the middle of operation. When I would boot it back up Microsoft would do the "Send error report" thing and it would send me to a web page saying that it was a hardware problem but it didn't know what hardwear was failing. It gave me a list of possible:
If overclocking turn off (Which I was and did disable)
Check Prossesor (My AMD 64 X2 +4200 is brand new and appears to be working fine)
Over packed power strip (Not a problem)
And Power supply. ( I think this is the most likly but have no way of proving it. I'm running 4 Hard drives. 1 Floppy. 2 CD drives. PCIe graphics card. 2 180mm fans and 1 80mm. all on a 450w power supply. Is that too much for it to handle? and Yes it's all nessisary.)

A:Computer turns off as if power went out.

It also can depend on the quality of the power supply. A cheap PSU will say 450 W but this is a peak value, and is an unrealistic dream. If it is a name brand or one of high quality it will put out a constant 450w. Check the label on the PSU to see if it is 450 Peak power, or 450 Constant. If it is peak, I would be looking into getting a more powerful PSU. I personally like to buy quality PSUs. I have a Cooler Master True 550w and it has never given me a problem.

Hello, my E5-511 screen crashes every time i power on the first time. The acer logo appears, then the screen goes black but the computer is still going. I have to hold the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on again to get it to work. I did a power drain (removed the battery and held the power button for 15 seconds to remove all stored power) and then it worked properly for about 36 hours and then right back to this same problem. As well, it never sleeps, it just shuts down all the time and then i have to go through this nonsense to get it powered on again.has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? thanks!!

A:Power light turns on but nothing else happens

G'day Myzteryh, these kinds of problems present difficult answers, quite obviously there is a malfunction of some type but what is the best course of action.
It is possible that some kind of malfunction has happened within the DVD combo or some other problem has affected the DVD combo but not knowing becomes difficult. The usb indication also is a consideration.
You could take it to a shop but they probably would not do more than what I am about to suggest.
It would probably be pertinent to obtain "Everest Home" off the net, (google it, Lavalys) this is an analysis program that can be helpful, remove any unneccessary USB stuff, load the Everest program, if you are able to, open it, then open the computer icon in it, then open the sensors section. This will show voltages and temperatures within the machine. If you could somehow copy and paste that page here would be nice, reallly what we are most interested in is the voltage readings, you can expect the table to show suggested readings on the left and actual readings on the right. I do feel you may find some way to achieve this without much problem and we may be able to work out what may be happening.
Do not leave the machine running for any period longer than neccessary at this time. (give it some thought)
If any of the twelve volt readings are above 14 Volts just switch it off and replace the power unit without any further testing.
There may be other ideas on how to address this problem.

Cheers, qldit.

My computer regularly turns off all by itself. It could be anywhere from 3 miniutes to 3-4 hours for it to turn off by itself. When I unplug the computer power cord and plug it in again then the power turns on again but usually turns off again after a while. Why does my computer turn off by itself and how can I resolve this problem?

A:Power on computer turns off by itself very often

This could be caused by a component of your computer heating up and telling the computer to shut down to prevent over heating. Make sure the computer is clean on the inside first and foremost! I suggest finding a temperature monitoring program like MBM5 or speed fan so you can tell just how hot things are getting. Hope that helps! Give it a shot and tell us the results.

A:Power on computer turns off by itself

A few initial thoughts.

- How old is the PC? If it isn't that new have you ever cleaned it out inside?

It could be a heat related issue although I would of thought you would get a warning before shutdown (although not always). If the temperature reaches or exceeds the temperature set in the BIOS the system will shutdown to protect itself.

- If it runs for a while, then shuts off. When you turn it back on does it normally shutdown again after a very short time? Or can it run for ages again before turning off?

Hi! Yesterday, I turned my PC on from 1:00PM to 12:00AM. After that, I turned it on at 7:30AM, and after 4-5 hours of working, it turned itself off (directly, but the green LED on the case was still lighting until I kept my finger pressing on the Power button. Then the light was gone). After that, I opened it again, but after about 3 hours of continuous working, it stopped in the same way as before - with the green LED lighting. I left it for a couple of hours. Then turned it on again, but this time, after an hour of working, it stopped!
For knowledge, I faced this problem months ago, when I used to turn it on for 10 hours daily (for about a month)!

A:My PC Turns Itself off With the Green Power LED Lighting!!!!

An intermittent power issue? I would be inclined to suspect the power supply or motherboard being at fault, but it really could be a multitude of different things. First of all I would check to make sure all of the cables are properly secured. Also make sure your computer and display are plugged into a surge protector, this is important. If you know what your looking for open up the case and make sure that the ATX power plugs are secured properly and that there isn't too much dust in there, especially inside the heatsinks.

Do you get any kind of errors or slowdown in Windows before the computer crashes?

A:Power turns on but no beeps or screen signal?

Hi broken_biker69,

I'm just wondering if this is something quite basic. Please try the following:

Remove the Power Adaptor
Remove the Battery
Remove any other external devices (ie USB devices)
Hold down the ON button for 30 seconds
Then put the Power Adaptor in ONLY
Turn on the Power at the wall (just in case!)
Turn on the computer

If that works please reply (to this thread)

My roommate tried to "fix" his PC but god knows he doesn't know crap. The PC acts like it is going to turn on, but the light on the front of the tower does not light up, nor does the display. The light on the motherboard is solid green, and he is still able to charge a phone through the PC, so I'm guessing the power supply is good if it can do all of this. At this point I am at a loss because I'm normally very good with this stuff, any suggestions? and I don't believe it's the video card.

Basically what the title says. I have my power options for my monitor timeout set to never turn off. It's a desktop, and I think I can trace the problem to a certain program. I have Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre installed for playing BluRay movies and when I run it, it changes the display options back to Windows Vista Basic. It would seem that the power option changes itself back after I close this program and Vista goes back to Aero mode.

Any ideas what I could do to fix this? I use the program a lot and I absolutely hate turning my monitors back on.

A:Vista turns off monitor even though power options are set to never

I would remove Arcsoft Total media Theatre, then reset Vista, defragment, and reboot, then reinstall ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre, and see if it will behave next time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 (desktop) with Vista Home Premium. Until the other day, when I pushed the power button to start the PC, it turned blue and the PC went through the boot-up process. Now, it turns yellow and nothing happens unless I do more. So I push and hold the power button until it turns off. Then, I push the button a bit more strongly and it turns blue and boots.

My first thought was that the power switch for this 2008 PC is getting old and that I may become unable to boot at all. So I have decided to just let it go into sleep mode for now rather than turning it off for the day.

Any ideas on solving the yellow light issue?

A:Power button turns yellow instead of blue

It's an error indicator (not a failing switch).

Depending on the model, there may be other error indicators as well. In any case, q quick search found this: Inspiron 530 steady amber power light. - General Hardware - Desktop - Dell Community

i have a 3 year old xps l502x. Last night I was working on it and I had turned battery charging off even though it was connected to the adapter. A friend of mine removed it and worked on it for a while. When I took it from him it was showing about 20% battery. I plugged it in and turned the charging on, as soon as i unselected stop charging battery,, the laptop turned off and the led on the charger also did the same. I trieed to turn it on again but it just wont do it, the charger is fine, i used other chargers, with the battery without the battery everything but the problem persists. Is the motherboard fried? I didn't smell any burning. My lappy isn't under warranty what should i do? Can the data be saved?

When I turn on my computer, a blank blue screen comes up and remains.  The startup sequence does not initiate and the computer will turn off after a minute or so.  Hitting the esc key after power-on gets me to the "Choose an Option" page.  From "Advanced Options", I have tried "System Restore" and "Startup Repair" neither fixed the problem.  Unable to boot in safe mode or change any of the startup settings because the system startup (restart) sequence is broken. A hard system reset did not work and pushing the F2 Key does not bring up the sys diag page. At this point, it seems that the only options left are trying to boot from a USB device or doing a PC Reset (keep my files)? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The last time that the laptop was on and working, while i was in the middle of an application, the screen had lines running across the screen (up & down) and the whole thing froze up and when i turned it off and then back on this is the problem i was having. Is there anything i can do to salvage this laptop or is gone? Thanks to anyone who can help me!!!

A:laptop power turns on but screen doesnt

Sounds like the laptop is not able to do the POST successfully. Try removing everything non-essential from the laptop (hard drive, optical drive, graphics card if it is not soldered onto the motherboard, etc.) and try powering it on. If that succeeds, add the additional components to the computer one by one until you isolate the one causing the POST to fail.

When i disconnect the 4prong power cable, and only leave the larger power cable in, the pc turns on like normal and stays on, but displays no picture on the monitor and also the mouse doesnt light up?
Am i right in thinking that the processor has broken? and that the pc needs the 4prong power source to function properly?

Hello, I have a Y510P notebook and I am having some problems with it. Once I was playing on this laptop and it suddenly it turned off. The power cord would make a weird noise and it wouldn't turn on. After a while it started to work normally. It was probably a high voltage spike in my house, since we already lost a cellphone. After that I notice that the laptop would turn off, as soon as I plugged the power cord. I ordered a new power cord and battery, but this issue is still happening. Anyone has an idea? Thank you!

A:Plugging power cord turns laptop off (Y510P)

Hi Tiagoramosleite,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can initially start isolating the issue using the power checkout guideline (page 21).
Try to notice anything on the DC port like bent pin , unusual appearance / marks or smell of burnt .
Would any led status light (page30) still be lit when plugged in.
It would be best to have it further checked for further isolation for dc in port issue against failure on the systemboard itself with nearest service center or call in technical support for further recommendation.
Update us how it works best for you.

I recently built a new PC contianing new components. I bring them home and assemble them (pretty sure i did it correctly first time build). I turn on my compter, the all the fans spin, and the LED on my front intake fan lights up for about half a second and then everything just dies.
Note: There's a green LED on the motherboard which lights up regardless of whether the computer is on or off.

Could this be a power supply problem or a newbie mistake?

If I want to turn it on, the power light turns into an orange dot...

If its caused by the emty RTC Battery, Where can I order a new one (In Europe?)

A:Satellite Pro 2100 - Power light turns into an orange dot

Normally this has nothing to do with a empty RTC battery. In this case you would only get an error message about a low CMOS battery or something else but the notebook would boot properly.

In your case I assume it?s a hardware problem. Have you already tried removing the battery and AC/DC adaptor for some hours or over night? Sometimes this helps?

Otherwise it would be great to get professional help form an authorized service provider. They can diagnose the notebook and exchange the faulty hardware parts.

As soon as I press the power button, the lights flash and the fans get one jolt of power causing them to spin and die out immediately and then everything stops in under a seccond. What could be causing this? I did add a new new hard drive to my computer yesterday, but it has restarted fine a few times since then, and unplugging it didn't fix the problem. Other than that, I can't think of anything that is different that would be causing this. Any ideas?

I am getting a BSOD ("driver power state failure") every few days. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to only occur when I leave my computer for a while (after the display has automatically turned off). I come back to the computer, and am met by a BSOD.

My power plan settings are at "balanced", with the display turning off after 10 minutes, and sleeping after 30 minutes.

Might not be related, but I also commonly get freezing every now and then when watching full-screen videos (for a few minutes the display freezes and the audio slows down to garbled distortion, then returns).

The SF Diagnostic Tool only found .dmp from 2011, is Kernel memory dump enough?

A:New build - no power?

This sounds suspiciously like a dead motherboard. But the noise from the PSU it not something I have heard before.

Strip the PC back to the bare minimum of components so all you have connected is the mobo, PSU, monitor (use the onboard graphics if it has any) and the on/off reset switch. Remove the RAM, hard drive, CD drive/s, keyboard speakers etc. This should give you the POST screen when you switch it on. If it does not do that then the mobo or CPU is faulty. I would then return both of them for replacement.

It is possible that you have accidentally caused some damage from static, you should always earth yourself when touching anything inside a PC and the wearing or a wrist strap attached to an earth point is highly recommended, they are not expensive.

Hi guys Have started building a new computer I am having problems getting it to boot up at all and the evidence would suggest that this is either a PSU or MOBO issue The PSU provides more than enough all on PC build won't New at power Volts for the MOBO so there is no issue of underpowering here I have used the paper clip test for the PSU and I was able to get the fan to turn doing so The processor is inside the MOBO along with the heatsink and the CPU FAN cable which has been connected to the CPU FAN male connector I have verified that the PSU is connnected that the mains power supply is ok checked it with a lamp working fine and also that all the various connectors such as the ATX headed cable is inserted properly as is the cable I have visually and manually verified that they are all inserted fully and without any gap This is now the second motherboard I New PC build won't power on at all have used I purchased the mobo online from a reputable seller who tested the old one and then sent me a replacement However the same issue has reared its head once again It is also worth noting that I have assembled the computer in a house where there was no carpets or rugs There is wooden flooring and ceramic tiles everywhere I have touched the components only New PC build won't power on at all after grounding myself I am at a loss here guys is it the MOBO or the PSU hour ago - days left to answer Additional Details Do I need to insert speakers for the beeps Don t have any I use headphones Would that work I do not have the video card hard drives or ram inserted or a monitor It is just the PSU MOBO and the Processor Given that the components are NOT within the chassis at present I can safely rule out a short in the circuit In short I am uncertain and unequipped to verify whether it is the PSU or MOBO Please help Given that previously I assembled the entire machine including the video card ram etc installed with absolutely no response I thought it would be better to start from the beginning work my way up and verify that each part was working before moving on nbsp

Hey everyone,

I built a new system (or rather am in the process) I just got my mobo (EVGA 680i T1). I took it outta it's box, installed the CPU (core2 duo) and heatstink/fan, and then connected the 24-pin and 8-pin power cables from it's awaiting powersupply (750w).

The standby light came on, then when I press the power button (the board power button) the CPU fan / power supply fan came on for a few seconds, then turned off and now it wont turn on at all, though the standby light remains on.

I already tried to reset the CMOS, I haven't tried pop'n out the battery which I read somewhere might fix it, though it seam unlikely. and I tested the power supply which seams to be running fine.

Anyone have any clue what might be going on, and please don't tell me my shiney new board is toast .

Hi i recently build a computer. these are all the parts.

Asus p8z68-v gen3 motherboard
Corairs 650 tx power supply
Gtx 560 ti superclocked graphic card
intel i5 2500k processor
8G of ram
cooler master 212 plus cpu fan
Windows 7 ultimate (64bit)

OK now on to my problem. Every time i shut of my computer and it lasts a few hours off, i need to flip the power supply switch on the back for a few seconds to be able to turn it back on. I don't know what is causing this. I don't know if it is a setting on the bios or something wrong with the power supply. It is not a big problem but it gets kind of annoying after a while. Any help would be appreciated. PLEASE!!

Hi guys I ve spent today building a pc for myself However on pressing the on button there s no reaction at all My machine specs are M B - Gigabyte GA- A-UD Processor - AMD RAM - Corsair Gb DDR Case - Zalman Z Graphics card - Gigabyte HD PSU - Corsair CX M W Wi-fi card also installed but can t remember the name and seem to have temporarily lost the box in a pile of packaging So far I ve checked the CPU and motherboard power sockets the wall plug sockets and the power cord to my PSU I ve also checked the connections between my case and the motherboard and these all appear to be correct on power build PC doesn't As part of this final point I switched the power on LED with the power button they both originate from the same location so thought they may be mixed up Anyhows I got a solid LED which suggests to me that a there s power running through the switch circuit and b the pc isn t booting when told to as a PC build doesn't power on solid LED would indicate PC build doesn't power on circuit completion which would be the equivalent of holding in the on button If anybody could shed any light on where to go next I d be eternally grateful currently searching the house for a paperclip to test the PSU nbsp

Does the CPU and case fans move at all, when pressing the power button?

Just finished putting together a PC. This is my first time, but I'm pretty confident I know what I'm doing.

Everything connected and I turn on the power button, and nothing.

My only thought is the power supply. The 24 pin connector is missing one of its pins. Is this normal? I took a pic so you can see what I mean. It's like the wire was never put through the hole if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the help.

Motherboard: DP35DP
Power: Neopower 650
Case: Antec P182

The pushbutton power switch must be pressed in twice to get the unit to power on.

Calling Antec they say to a) update bios or b) try another power supply or c) change the motherboard.

All of which seems extreme, with everything else ready to go now. I was thinking the "2 step switch" was a safety feature so the unit could not be accidentally turned on but no such luck.

What is the likely problem?

A:new build - power up problem

Re-check all your power and switch connections to the motherboard, unplug then replug them a few times.

If no joy, time to start suspecting a bad case switch, mobo, power supply.

Bios has nothing to do with it.

Hi all, seasons greetings to you all.

Have just purchased an Elite K7S5A mo/bo and AMD Athlon XP1800+ CPU, along with a new case and memory module.

The problem I have is that although I am certain that I have followed the build instructions to the letter (this is my third self build compo) the computer will not power up.
I have installed two hard drives, CD and DVD, sound card and video card from my old (working) compo.
Does anybody know if there should be power at the 12V output from the PSU at all times, or only when the power switch is depressed? I am only getting about 0.5V, and nothing at the 5V output.

Anybody any ideas?

Cheers to all, thanks in anticipation

Just in the process of building a gaming rig but having problems getting the computer to power up.

mobo - gigabyte Z77-D3H
Processor - i5 3450
Memory - Kingston hyper x DDR3 1600mhz CL9
PSU - powercool x-viper 450W and generic 650w
case - Zalman Z5
Hard drive - Kingston hyper x 3k SSD 120gb

- Tested powercool PSU using antec PSU tester - pass
- Changed over to generic 650w PSU with no power on button. plugged in and hit case power on button to make sure that i had all the connectors in correctly. PSU fans powered up but still nothing through the CPU, no fan, no post.
- removed motherboard from case (possible shorting issues??) again PSU powers up but nothing from the CPU or fan and no posting bleeps?
- added post test card but returns 00 no errors.

Help and comments appreciated.

A:new build - no power to CPU i5 3450

Check the 24 pin power connector to make sure its being fully inserted. Same way with CPU Power (8 pin).

You can get a false positive with a PSU tester as it does not test the power supply under load. You could have the correct voltages with no load but under load one or more voltages could fail.

Check that your system isn't being shorted out by any of the motherboard mounting screws. Try testing outside of the case if in doubt. Other than that it sounds like you could have a DOA component.

I have an Abit KN8, AMD 3200 XP, Antec 400w Smart power, 1 Crucial 512 dimm, an ATI 300X PCIe video, a floopy drive, an ide hard drive and a usb mouse and keyboard. All parts are known to be good. As I turn on the power the LED on the board lights, the power supply fan-cpu fan and auxillary fan all spin for just about 2 seconds and stop. The power light in the case stays on. I have reset the CMOS and changed the battery, reset the power cord connection and reset memory dimm. I have rechecked all connections.

Does anyone have suggestions of things to try. Hate to take the board out to look for shorts.

You can get 1000watt psu's now, they arent hard to find, check thermaltake, silverstone, I know they have good ones. 850 would probably be minimal for that thing you're running.

Rebuilding from array of old parts. When old PC was taken apart all I needed was a new case, but I revamped alot and ended up with most everything needed for a new PC leftover. Rebuilt PC from the old parts. Couple of problems here. The new case has elevated areas where the standoffs for the motherboard should go. If standoffs are used the MB sets too high in the case. (Like its designed not to use standoffs. And there were no standoffs packaged to use.) So when all put together sans standoffs, No power. None period, no beeps or anything. The fan in the power supply dons't run either. Does this sound like a problem with grounding on the case or just a faulty power supply?
