Preferred Solution: I broke the logon screen (tried to replace the system file.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried to edit my login screen by altering C Windows System authui dll Now all I get after the Windows loading screen is a black screen with only a white mouse cursor that I can move around Windows would not let me replace the file--even after I took ownership of it and altered the permissions--because it was in use by explorer Knowing I could very well run into some kind of issue I made a backup of the original file saving it with a new name in System screen, Windows. my get can't broke into logon I I used resource hacker to save a new edited version to my desktop The only change I made was that I altered the length and width of the user image from rp to rp in order to disable it I figured I could not make any more progress in Windows easily so I booted into I broke my logon screen, can't get into Windows. Debian and replaced the file with my new edited version I tried booting into Windows and faced this problem of an invisible login screen I booted back into Debian and got rid of my edited version of the file and renamed the backup to authui dll Naturally I expected everything to go back to normal However this seems to have made no improvement and I continue to see this black screen Booting into safe mode results in the same problem I do still have my Windows install disk Unfortunately my DVD drive no longer functions so I cannot boot using DVD drives I don't see any easy way to run a Windows installation repair Any idea why this is happening or how to resolve it

Hello Soldier,

If you have a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive, then you could see if running a SFC scan at boot using Method Two in the tutorial below may be able to help.

SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

If you like, you could also do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened to undo and fix this.

Hope this helps for now,

Welcome to the forums Brian 1234!

Sounds like you have a problem huh?
Have you tried a repair install? Here's a tutorial on how to do that if you haven't before :

Repair Install

The broken screen can be replaced (by you) with very little hassle. It shouldn't by itself be the cause of your problems.

This is a PURELY physical problem - up until I dropped my laptop on it's side on a table the other day, my DVD/CD drive read disks beautifully.

It opens and shuts smoothly and fine, but when I try and start up sims or play a DVD, it says there is no disk. I restarted my computer, and it is not responding accordingly. I will attempt this again, but first I would like to know if fixing it without replacing is even possible. I examined the disk holder bit and nothing seems crooked or broken. If it's misaligned, how do I tell?

If I can't figure out how to fix the damn thing, how would I go about ordering a new part?

The laptop is a Gateway M-1626 with a AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 with 2.00 GHz. 32 bit processor and 4GB of ram

A:Broke my Cd-Drive Fix/replace?

with most laptops the type of connection to thte board is via one plug affixed to the back of the drive (not like a desktop with power and then data) so if you're getting power to open the drive you probably have the connection you need. The lens that reads the disc is probably broken or way off line. Surely someone has a broken one of those laptops that you can get the drive pretty cheap used off ebay

Hi Clark Kent,

Please check this tutorial below which outlines all possible steps for resolving no boot issue for the system:

We need to replace the oleaut32.dll file version with a newer one that we think is better at rounding numbers. Naturally the operating system does not want us messing with the file while it's up. How can we replace the file?

First of all I am an MCSE no need to get basic I am working on a Windows server which file system permissions Replace on lost W2K has ALL of the security on ALL of the files and folders set to quot Everyone Full Control quot Aparently all are being set by inheritance from the default root setting I am presuming that a virus has deleted all of the explicit DACLs from all Replace lost permissions on W2K file system of the file system objects to achieve this I m not a programmer but that seems to be the only way to do this in W K In NT it was common for a quot newbie quot to set a permission at the root click quot change all directories and subdirectories quot and have this calamity happen but that is not the way they do it anymore in W K Back in the NT Days there was a utility I believe in the Reskit that could reset all of the default system security settings and I have used it a couple of times but I can t find it or a W K version again I believe it would be possible to do this with an AD GPO but that looks like a nightmare that would live on long after the security settings job is done Anybody know what I am looking for and where to look Please also reply to my direct email address Thanks Will Harper MCSE NT amp W K CTT email protected nbsp

I am having issues booting my windows 7 (service pack 1) laptop and I have been online trying fixes for hours. Based on the evidence it seems I most likely have a corrupt ntdll.dll in my system32 folder. One forum I read said to get the file from a computer with the same installation of windows and replace it using the recovery console. I tried this, but I get the message:

"The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open."

I assume this means some process has the file open. If this is the case, is there any way I can close it to copy over the corrupt version?

(All my restore points failed, startup recovery failed, sfc said it fixed corrupt files, but issue persists, and diskcheck said no problems so I am really out of options)

A:Replace corrupt system file from windows 7 recovery console

We should be able to fix this, but first I need to see a report from the System File Checker and we can go from there, follow the instructions below to run the check and post the log produced.
System File Checker
Click on Start and type cmd in the search box. Right click on cmd in the popup menu and select Run as Administrator.
Another box will open, at the Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. (Note the gap between the c and the /)
Let the check run to completion. DO NOT reboot the PC or close the cmd window.
Copy & Paste the following command at the Command Prompt and press Enter:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
This will place a file on your desktop called sfcdetails.txt which contains the results of the scan.
Copy and Paste the contents of the file into your next post.

Hey, I was having some trouble with my mcafee suite and uninstalled part of it. Then I couldn't connect to the web cause I was missing my sporder.dll file. I reinstalled that file and was able to connect again. But I'm having some problems viewing some web pages correctly. I thought it had to do with Java, but I reinstalled that and I'm still having the same issues. I wanted to do a system restore back to where I was before I ever tried to update my McAfee suite and now I can't even get into my system restore... well actually the window pops up, but there's nothing there.

What's the deal here?

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 5110 with windows 7 Home Premium. Whenever i choose to hibernate this system, all that happens is the screen dims to black for a moment, and then the log in screen comes up.

I've restarted the computer and the problem continues. I don't have any hardware plugged in to the computer, and there are no programs running in the background. In the Windows Task Manager, I recognize all the Processes that are running and see nothing unusual.

Please i need help

Thank in advance.

Hi, haven't been able to log in to my main PC since October. Keep getting a black logon screen after the Windows loading screen. I've Googled for solutions, posted on the Japanese Microsoft help forum, posted on, but no solutions have worked so far.

I've tried Safe Mode, Windows Restore, sfc /scannow, but nothing has worked. Not sure if anyone here has any other solutions, but thought I'd ask before I try paying Microsoft Japan for Premier Support.

Please see the thread for the circumstances for my problem and the specific solutions I've tried.

Hi there,

I have a windows 7 pc in a "domain", so when you get to the initial windows 7 welcome screen (prior to logging in as a user), you get a blank transparent Picture

A:How to change Logon screen Picture frame (before logon)

Its ok, managed to get it working, seemed to work when i did it again, strange. No blank picture frame now, just a customised "picture frame" that appears prior to logon, just what I was after. Hope this helps anyone else trying to achieve this.

Vanilla Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. It has never had a login account or password protection, and is only used in single user mode.

Yesterday, start-ups fine, no password. Today, I'm presented with the user logon widow prompting me for a password, and cannot logon to Vista!

No-one has meddled with the laptop. Don't know if SP1 was automatically downloaded
and installed - whatever the factory defaults were from Dell. I've not seen any references to this kind of issue on Vista, but have heard about a similar thing with NT.

Any suggestions how this could have happened?

Yes - I know I can reset passwords using the NT Password Editor (

It's always better to run matching pairs of RAM

You can use different RAM but there are restriction to which.

The motherboard manufacture will provide a list of known compatible RAM. (Known as a Memory QVL)

You can also us tools such the one on that will scan your computer and provide you with a list of guaranteed compatible RAM.

The amount of RAM is restricted by your motherboard and your operating system. Again, the Crucial scan will tell you how much your system can run.

Periodically I get this message when I try to close MS Outlook: "The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"
Then when I try to close it, Word opens, and it goes through a series of other steps I have to do to close Word. Otherwise, Word and
Outlook function properly.

The problem will start happening consistently for awhile, then go away. It has been happening for a couple of years at least. I have had
maybe three malware attacks during that time that I have successfully remedied using the help from this site. The most recent was a
Trojan or file that was named "Win32/Winwebsec". And, after following the procedures on this site I was able to clear that and have had
no other problems. Then a few days ago I started noticing this issue again.

Any help will be appreciated.

Well, I've been quite unlucky and clumsy this month. Last night I was using my pc and I accidentally tripped over my acer monitor's power cord (don't comment on why u should have tucked the wire in behind the desk ). The monitor fell and the screen cracked. All the pixels went funny and stuff.

The crack looks a bit like this picture I got from Google images:
Luckily, I got a warranty for my monitor but I don't know if it will be valid for the problem I have. My monitor is an acer v226hql.

Also, I would like to know if there is an 'acer authorised service provider' in my city (Birmingham, uk). I don't want to spend like ?30 on delivering my monitor to acer.

I don't think I remember where I bought it from but I think I bought it from Ccl computers on eBay.

I searched it on google and found it on a site that sells replacement screens but they are out of stock and it's like 100$ which is way more than I expect to pay.

In my case I would like to replace cmd.exe with Take Command or Cygwin, Notepad with Notepad++. Calculator with DreamCalc, Regedit with Torchsoft Registry Workshop, and the default clipboard with ClipMate. I'm a poweruser of sorts and find these apps far superior to Microsoft's built-ins. I have already replaced Task Manager with Process Hacker 2, it has an option to do so. I want to be able to press Windows key/Super and type in any of the default builtin names, and have my custom app display instead. I have found a method which requires making a backup copy of and replacing files in %Windows%. But I'm leary of this sort of thing, so I need an alternate method. Perhaps there is some Registry entry I can modify? Environment/system variables? Anything else? Whatever the case may be, it must be easily reversible as well.

Thanks for any help!

Ok heres the story this is my first time posting btw I think I seriously could use a little help Well my computer was having freezes here and there system files. Operating trying broke, remove to then sometimes it would freeze so badly that I would have to manually power off my computer Well after one of these freezes after I powered down it would no longer start up It would go to the loading screen for vista then go black for a while then go to a light blue screen Not dark blue like the BSoD Well Operating system broke, trying to remove files. I took the computer to geeksquad at best buy to get an idea of what is wrong I was told that all my hard ware appears fine and that I should probably just reinstall windows I had vista and I know I can get windows for free from my school so that s all fine and dandy The real issue is they wanted like to back up my files All that is really important to me is some pictures on that hard drive most of the pictures are backed up but not the newest ones So I took it home took out the hard drive and put it into my rocketfish I used years be when my old computer died So now I have it all set up in the external hard drive case But when I tried to move the files off on my brothers Windows operating system it said the hard drive needed to be formatted It is showing up but wont let me access the files and im decently sure I don t want to format the hard drive I thought maybe it was windows so I took it Operating system broke, trying to remove files. to my aunt s who has XP but now im having the same problem it s reading the drive but telling me it s empty and that it needs to be formatted I think it may have to do with corrupt start up files I know a decent amount about computers but I am not techie I am sort of at a loss of what to do atm I am fairly certain the enclosure isn t bad in disk management it Operating system broke, trying to remove files. is showing me all the HDD and is showing the correct amount of memory It s definetly reading it it just wont let me access it I already made sure this enclosure should work with this HDD like I said tho my OS was not working idk if that could be somehow stopping me from reading the files I opened the enclosure case It s a gb Barracuda made by seagate I was told by geeksquad they didn t think it was a hardware issue but instead the operating system do you think they could be wrong Any help would be appreciated in fact I am at my aunt s now so any swift replies would be awesome P nbsp

Hi, my geforce 4 mx420 broke and i had to remove it from my system. Once i installed the onboard video, i noticed a big slowdown in everything, closing windows had the effect of closing blinds. It takes extra long to load winamp, firefox, and other simple applications. Can the overall system slowdown be caused by not having a video card? Or is it something else. We ran a virus scan and there were no viruses. Back when i had my video card, the computer was fast, was able to play games, have winamp in the backround while playing games, load multiple windows at a time. Now i can barley run 1 application.

Slowdowns on programs can be due to reverting to a *crappy* video card. Now all of te graphics it has to render is relied on more by the cpu now. Also, the Celeron D CPU isn't what you would call a "performance" processor either.

Hi I have a Satellite P -C laptop It's better to say I used to have it since I sent it for service a month ago and it never came back The screen broke when I was opening the lid one day the same way as I have been opening laptops in the last years Simply heard a opening screen lid broke P50-C Satellite the crack noise and when I had it opened I could see the display was broken and with dead pixels So being covered by the No Matter What Guarantee the laptop was less than one year I Satellite P50-C screen broke opening the lid made the mistake to send it to the authorized Toshiba service in Romania sending it being a challenge Satellite P50-C screen broke opening the lid itself One month since Satellite P50-C screen broke opening the lid then and I still don't have it back been calling the service every days the latest was that the laptop was sent to be destroyed as at some point I don't know when it will be replaced I have been trying over and over to get in contact with Toshiba and it is impossible I can only deal with the service people which have already proved how bad they are since they told me the laptop was sent to be destroyed without me even being informed on that When I made the service request I did not tick the box where it said I agreed with data being deleted I never imagined that changing a broken screen in Toshiba's authorized service would mean sending the laptop there and never getting it back again I find it difficult to work and deal with Toshiba since the only was of communication is through distributors that don't answer the phone or don't deal with this type of problems so the Toshiba support is equal to Will never make the mistake to buy a Toshiba laptop again

I upgraded from Vista Business to Seven Home Premium. Used Office 2007 in Vista and using it in Seven. In Vista, my .pst file was C:\Outlook\MyOutlookFolder.pst. Added it to Outlook using Data File Management, but none of my calendar entries appeared (my inbox and all my other folders are OK). When I upgraded from XP to Vista, this worked fine.

Where are my Calendar entries?

Hi. I tried the solution in post 6 of this thread. It successfully removed the document stuck in my printer's queue. However, upon restarting Windows I get the following messages:

Window Title: Run DLL
Message: Error loading C:|Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll. Specified module not found

Window Title: .NET
Message: Runtime optimization service stopped working and was closed.

I tried to restore my old system, but apparently System Restore was turned off (aside: how the heck did that happen?).

Edit: I also looked for NvCpl.dll in my Recycle Bin, but it's not there.
Edit: I have an SSD, so cannot use a file recovery program.

Any advice on how to fix? Is my system broken or can I at least keep working until NvCpl is fixed?

Not sure if this is the correct place for this.

AFAIK,I have no viruses or junk on my PC.Its an HP,563 w,with 1GB,Windows XP home edition, and flat LCD screen.I can run another check but it hasnt found anything.Im still on SP2,the SP3 upgrade was crashing my system,so I left it on 2.

Anyways,Today the desktop screen just went crazy, the colors and icons broke apart all over the middle of the screen and I could not click on anything. It was all jumbled up.

I manually shut off the computer and turned it back on.It did the self disk check for a few minutes. Its fine now.

What causes this to happen or what is it a possible sign of?

I just want to know or be prepared if its a sign of the PC is on its way out one of these days.

A:Desktop Icons,Colors,etc,Broke Up On Screen

All computers have glitches. I don't necessarily think it's anything to worry about - unless it happens again.

If it was only the colors - I would guess the monitor or the cable.

Since it was colors and icons - I would guess the graphics card or the video driver.

At this point, you can't really know for sure.

I had a problem where I was running UEFI with secure boot disabled and dual booting with Linux Mint which is UEFI compliant Mint had installed Grub Mint's boot manager but I don't like Grub so i installed rEFInd Unlike Grub rEFInd has support for UEFI and should have worked better as a boot manager But it gave me problems too So I had Grub and rEFInd both installed I could boot to both Mint and Windows but Boot Fails When - Secure Repair System my broke Windows the boot managers both Grub or rEFInd would not show at startup like they are supposed to I had to boot the PC then hit Escape getting into my options menu built into the system hit F to get a list When Secure Boot Fails - System Repair broke my Windows of boot options where i could then choose to boot from hard drive cd rom usb etc rEFInd was in this list Only after choosing rEFInd from here was I able to open rEFInd and choose Windows or Mint This is way too many steps to boot into an OS so i thought i'd try to use the system When Secure Boot Fails - System Repair broke my Windows repair disk to repair my master boot record or the EFI data that the system uses at boot under UEFI I forgot that i had to run some additional commands under command prompt and just ran automatic repair from Advanced instead At this time Windows had no trouble working at all with secure boot enabled if I really needed windows to use secure boot It said it found but could not fix the errors Suddenly Windows would not boot even with secure boot enabled I reran the tool times and it didn't help so i wiped the drive and reinstalled Windows from a clean state I really did not have errors on the system to begin with accept that the system was trying to access my boot managers in an odd manner although i could get everything to work The automatic repair option should not have made things worse even breaking my secure boot but it did My point of this is to show that the repair disk tools and how they play with the EFI boot tools is buggy and it can break your system even if there is nothing wrong with Windows and it's ability to boot under secure boot Don't trust the Repair Disk tool folks Don't trust UEFI Don't trust Secure Boot Be smart Install a clean system under Legacy Bios mode with UEFI and secure boot disabled

My sound has been out since I downloaded a certain video game off the internet. Maybee the game wasnt compatible with my comp. Anyway it changed some settings in my sound and I cant get sound to work now. I have gotten all new drivers for it and reinstalled sound card. Now I have no conflicts or error messages and the sound appears to play but i dont hear anything. Windows troubleshooter directed me to go find my system.ini file and look for these two files: wavw=mmsystem.dll and midi=mmsystem.dll. Neither of these are preasent in the system.ini file anymore. I found one of them in my registry so the files are in my com somewhere but they arent being initialized because of this game I downloaded. I got rid of the game download and cannot find it in my system.
How can I get my sound back online?

Recently on startup I have been getting a File System Check, NTFS or something. The first time I skipped it and everything loaded great. Today I tried skipping the check again and got a black screen with just my mouse cursor. This happens every time. I tried doing the check but it takes forever so I stopped it.

I tried going into safe mode but it stops when it lists all the files its loading.

What do I do? If you need more details ask.

It seems to occur whenever I try to open a file in an application such as MS Office; In other words whenever I try to browse the filesystem from an open file command my computer crashes. Since the install is fairly old, I am guessing it could mean my HDD has gotten corrupted?

There is a hotfix for this issue, with the issue being so wide spread one would think Microsoft would put it in an update. The hotfix is called Windows6.1-KB2578159, make sure to download the 64 bit version from Microsoft's site. This will hopefully fix your issue. At the hospital I work at we have had this issue a lot and just now found this hotfix, so I can't say for sure if it will fix your issue. Also make sure you have all the Windows updates installed. Hope that helps.

I cannot get to my desktop as this black screen is preventing me to do so.

It doesn't even give me enough time to log in!
It happened once before but it magically started to work the other time.
This never happened when I was still using the stock 640GB HDD that the laptop came with. So maybe I'm thinking it's because of my SSD having problems?

Fortunately, I can still get to Safe Mode and it says I got a BSOD and here's some details that it showed:

BCCode: d1
BCP1: 0000000000000010
BCP2: 0000000000000002
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: FFFFF8800170F5D6

I went to Event Viewer and took a look on what made my computer mess up and it says that winlogon.exe and Explorer. initiated the restart of my computer and said there was no reason for it.

Hi people, i've just registered to this forum to ask you about this, Since i've made a registry defrag with TuneUp Utilities (which probably has gone wrong), when i reset the computer, and I logon to my user, it shows a black screen, then back at the logon screen. If I do it again, the user doesn't show up anymore!
It happened three times already, i had to make new users, and i'm sick of it. Any ideas of what could it be?

A:Black screen after login for some seconds, then back at logon screen!

Yet another case of registry defraggers causing harm. In the future, you know now to stay far away from them.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before TuneUp utilities. If that doesn't work, it will be time for a repair install.

Good luck!

---Wow this is frustrating I just got done fixing two other computers- one was helping someone else fix their computer because they were seeking someone with basic expertise and here I am seeking someone with higher knowledge to help me out no screen screen, Windows logon bootup black Vista thanks in advance to all who contribute --- HP Media Windows Vista black screen, no bootup logon screen Center M FWindows Vista bit GB RAM NVIDIA graphics card and plenty of HD spaceF hardware diagnastics A-OK Suddenly this computer decided Windows Vista black screen, no bootup logon screen to malfunction without installing anything new or updates prior to its quot crashing quot I'm pretty wary to spyware and virus of the like so I am careful to what is installed and opened on this computer But for all I know when I was out of the house someone could have accessed the the machine infecting it with something I noticed before I left the house that it took a ridiculously long time to empty out the recycle bin has anyone else had this problem in vista I know there were a lot of high res pictures in there so I'm guessing quite a few gigs of deletion but after an hour it hadn't even progressed It said minutes and appeared to be frozen but was still moving I restarted the computer and tried the same thing-- exact same result lt --- this is the only hint I have as to what happened because before this everything was fine Anyway I got home and turned on the computer after someone turned it off and it just booted up the HP screen and then went to the windows logo loading page except there was no windows logo It displayed the loading bar and moving across the box at the bottom but just with no windows vista logo Then came the blue screen with the moveable mouse pointer I waited hours the mouse pointer still could be moved but the screen was frozen on the light blue hue right before the welcome screen or logon screen I retried this several times with this same result Even CTRL ALT DEL does not work Even more interesting I tried booting in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt both with the same result of black screen with mouse pointer and the text quot Safe Mode quot in all for corners No progression after an hour of waiting Booting windows in quot last known good configuration quot didn't work either There was also a quot repair quot function that precipitated the same results as well The F Recovery Console at the HP boot screen did not work no matter how rhythmic my F pushes were-- not sure why I couldn't recover this system on the recovery partition since HP doesn't send you recovery CDs anymore Lastly I made a Hiren Boot CD followed with my own Windows Vista installer boot CD They both had the same result when booting straight from the cdrom error message on a black screen quot The System memory manager EMM EXE has detected an error caused by a fault in one of the device drivers or programs loaded in the system Due to this fault the system is probably in an unstable state and you are therefore recommended to reboot the computer immediately If the problem persists then try to isolate which program is at fault if you have loaded several then load them one at a atime until the fault appears then contact tech support department for that program Advanced technical information Exception Invalid Opcode DS CB etc etc let me know if you need all the alphanumeric encoding quot When I don't boot straight from the cdrom it freezes and says this quot FD mb System Type- Starting Caldera DR-DOSEMM Copyright etc etc etc lt ---- blinking cursor quot I don't think I'm leaving out much of all but any other inquiries let me know I find this problem extremely odd yet annoying I don't know what else to do this computer is barely a year old Tech support wants or something like for days on one issue even for a recovery cd they want Wow HP Anyways thanks in advance and cheers Nowachi

A:Windows Vista black screen, no bootup logon screen

It may be that someone didn't turn off the PC rather that it experienced a damaging event and shut down.Suggest you check the RAM - remove and reseat and try rebooting. If not successful your mother board may be damaged - nasty thought. There is also this site which may be relevant. you can get your PC going suggest you check Event Viewer. Then restore files from the recycle bin and then use SHIFT/DELETE to get rid of them, delete a small file and see if emptying the recycle bin works OKPaul

Hi Matsu5003,

Welcome onboard.

I think you did not get any response mainly because your problem description could not be understood.

Press the Power button on your Desktop (?) for more than 5 seconds to shut down your PC.

Remove it from the Mains Supply and leave it for half an hour to dissipate all charges in it.

Now connect it to the mains and switch on your PC.

Describe exactly what happens after the BIOS run.

If you get an error message carefully note it down and post.

The knowledgeable folks here ( not me ) may then perhaps be able to help you on that cue/clue.

Hi ALL :-)I am trying to find a way/utility to search and replace multiple files from different directories with a single file. Windows search will not let me paste from another location to files I have found. Please keep in mind that I am not trying to find and replace "within" the files but the actual files themselves. Thanks for any help.

I have a large number of WMV (and a few ASF & ASX) video files that I have legally downloaded and are not DRM/copy-protected. The files all play fine but in many cases the thumbnail is simply black, like the first frame of the video file when played with Windows Media Player 11. I want to replace the thumbnail with another image. Does anyone know of a program or app that can do this?

Under Tools > Folder Options > View, Do not cache thumbnails is unchecked. Also, there is no thumbs.db folder. I have this problem (black thumbnail) with about 50% of the files. Thanks for any help.

A:Replace Pci.sys File Without Windows Cd

Try running the chkdsk program. It runs from the command line, but will require a reboot in order to complet the routine.

To run chkdsk you need to do the following:

Start >> Run >> cmd.exe >> Press [Enter]

Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt

When the command prompt window opens, type the following:

chkdsk /f/r

And then press [Enter]

It will give some coding syntax returned and ask if you want to run chkdsk at next boot. Type 'yes' or 'y' whichever answer will indicate that "yes you want to run chkdsk at next boot".

You can get more information about the chkdsk command by typing the following:

chkdsk /?

Press [Enter]

If you cannot boot Windows and get to your desktop environment to run go through the Start -> All Programs menu, boot your computer to Safe Mode with Command Prompt. You may need to log in as the local administrator account on your machine to access the C:\ drive from the command prompt. If you haven't changed any of the default settings, the administrator password should be blank by default.

The check disk command routine will run a series of five tests, locate any abandoned or rogue files or sectors and attempt to repair them. You do not need the bootdisk to run the command and it usually fixes things up for you without having to go through an entire restore. It will troll the i386 folder to try and repair any damaged or lost files in your Windows installation.

See if that helps out.

Best of luck and happy hacking!

I'm trying to shorten up some too-long file path names.
I have some recurring strings that I could just delete, but for the life of me I can't find any search & Replace function for file names.
Is there a way?

A:search and replace in file name

You probably can find some third party soft ware to accomplish this. Other than that It will be done at an elevated prompt. The snip is for the "rename" command. Type rename or ren with /? at the prompt for full syntax. this does not do a search.
Hope this helps.

I plug my usb to open a powerpoint presentation and it a popup came up saying that the presentation already exist if i want to replace it, and i press yes and it replace it for an empty presentation. Is there any way I can recover the powerpoint presentation i had before replace it?

A:want to recover a file after replace it

Sounds like the presentation was overwritten. If so, an overwritten file cannot be recovered.

I hope you learn from this you should never have less than two copies of your data--never.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said I had a bad perfproc.dll file and it could not be repaired. I downloaded a good copy of the perfproc .dll file from another win7 PC. When I tried to copy it back to my PC win 7 would not allow me to paste it in the system32 folder. The system said the file was ether open or in use by another program. My PC is a dual boot system with XP-Pro installed in another partition. I booted up XP and tried to copy the perfproc into the win 7 partition but got the same message. I then booted up using a BART Boot CD and tried to copy the perfproc file into the win 7 disc and got the same error message. Does anybody have any idea how I can replace the bad perfproc.dll file in the win 7 partition?

A:How to replace a bad perfproc.dll file

Hello Pjhormell,

You would need to take ownership of the original perfproc.dll file and "Allow" your user account "Full Control" of it, rename the original perfproc.dll file, then copy the replacement into the System32 folder.

Hope this helps,

A:can not move and replace a file

Do Option 2 of this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have.

To properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Hi, I followed your wonderful guide to removing Security Master AV and have gotten through almost all of the steps. The last step you give (besides restarting) is to replace the HOSTS file. Well, I went to the spot where the file is and it says I don't have permission to delete it, but I am the administrator on this computer. I've tried moving it, replacing it and a few various tactics but nothing is working. Thanks for everything, here is the guide I'm referring to:
