BSOD on startup or with very few processes running.

Q: BSOD on startup or with very few processes running.

I'll link to all of my crash dumps below. I'm running windows 7 64 bit. Computer currently won't start outside of safe mode. I get the following BSODs:
1) Memory Management
2) Page Fault in Non-Paged Area
3) System 32 Exception

F-secure and Malwarebytes have been run, all drivers are apparently up to date, and almost none of the memory on the computer should be used. Computer is one month old. I need help from experts

Preferred Solution: BSOD on startup or with very few processes running.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the forum.

No outdated drivers which points toward hardware issue.

Based on the bugchecks, I would recommend you follow and complete the steps given below:1. If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop. Reset any changed values back to default and reset/clear CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS. Uninstall any overclocking tool as these can also be a reason of blue screens.

2. Uninstall your current antivirus software. It can be a cause of BSOD very often. Please remove it with its removal tool and use Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. Malwarebytes is a great combination with it. Go through this thread for more info.

3. Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log

4. Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to check windows for integrity violations. Run it up to three times to fix all errors. Post back if it continues to show errors after a fourth run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations.

5. Make scans with Kaspersky TDSskiller and ESET Online scanner.

6. Perform a Clean Start up, this will help avoid any problematic applications from bugging the system.

7. Use Revo Uninstaller Free to uninstall stubborn software. Opt for Advanced Mode and uninstall the software, delete the leftover registry entries.

8. Use Crystal Disk Info to upload a screenshot of your Hard Drives (s). Test your Hard Drives (s) running a Hard Drive Diag.

9. Test and Diagnose RAM issues with RAM - Test with Memtest86+. Pay close attention to Part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors" Take the test for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.Post back results.

Using 2k or XP, at startup (doing the 3 finger salute) using Task Manager, under processes (not applications) just how many do you have running?

Don't forget to subtract one for Task Manager itself running at the time and let the system settle down after the desktop shows since some M$ processes shut down after a few seconds.

As the title suggests my Acer Aspire has been running startup repair for over hours following a BSOD yesterday I'm not sure if it's worth the wait so maybe you all can shed some light Yesterday I was stressfully trying to search for something using Chrome and the website I was on froze admittedly I repair unknown startup on running long too BSOD error, startup, slammed the heels of my hands down on the laptop at that point The site unfroze after less than seconds I continued using my laptop without incident then let it hibernate for about an hour Started up fine after that and at that point I was beginning to rip a DVD one that I owned I BSOD on startup, unknown error, startup repair running too long just wanted the files on my computer using a program that I've used successfully in the past but the rip failed So I began using VLC instead and hadn't actually started ripping any files when my laptop froze I had been trying to point to a file path for BSOD on startup, unknown error, startup repair running too long saving but hadn't saved anything The laptop was completely unresponsive after several minutes so I hit the power key to restart which is when I got the BSOD It flashed too quickly for me to read or remember anything other than the word KERNEL I've been wracking my brain trying to remember if it said kernel error or kernel memory error or what After the BSOD I had the option to start normally or in startup repair I hit quot start windows normally quot but it went to repair anyway It was on the grey screen with the cursor but I thought it had frozen again so I did another hard restart No BSOD this time but again the options for normal or startup repair this time I hit startup repair waited - minutes and it started actually running startup repair It's been doing this for over hours at this point the HD light on my laptop is not on Not flashing nothing I give all this information because I'm trying to decide if I should continue waiting or if I should punt on the startup repair and try to troubleshoot I'm afraid that if I shut down the laptop I will damage the hard drive I did not run a chkdsk on it but I'm anxious to know whether it went into startup repair because of a memory error or because of a damaged hard drive from my slamming my hands on the thing in my stupid impatience Am I wasting my time I can keep waiting but I'm wondering if anyone's had experience with this to know a if I should just cancel now remove the HD and try to salvage information from it then reinstall Windows or b if I should wait longer and hope for the best Sorry if this is in the wrong place please advise

I am trying to help a friend out with an extremely slow computer. It is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP Home Edition. It has 2 user profiles, and regardless of which profile is chosen first, it is absolutely unusable because of it being so low. If I log off of one profile and choose the other then there are no issues, and only about 87 processes running, but the first profile shows 257 processes running consitently, most are svchost.exe and all are showing memory usage between 2600 and 4000. I am unable to check anything on the profile because the windows never open. Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Running Norton Antivirus 2005 pro OR AVG 7.0 pro?

Please post screenshot of your running processes.

The reason I need screenshots of your running Processes is because I suspect Norton AntiVirus 2005 uses less Memory than AVG 7.0 Pro.

If AVG 7.0 Pro uses more memory resources than Norton AntiVirus 2003 then IT IS TOO BAD TO BE TRUE!!!!

Guys I have recorded the followinfg services running when each of the 2 applications are running.

Norton AntiVirus 2003 (Not 2005 with updates).
----Service------------Mem Usage
NAVAPSVC.EXE________960 K
NPROTECT.EXE_______3,828 K
CCAPP.EXE__________9,576 K

AVG 7.0 Pro
----Service--------Mem Usage-----
avgamsvr.exe______13,108 K
avgcc.exe_________11,990 K
avgupsvc.exe______12,292 K
avgemc.exe________3,044 K
I am thinking seriously switching back to Norton.....

Please help guys....This drives me nuts. I read so many good things about AVG and so Bad things about Nortons (as a resouse hug) and this drives me nuts.

Thanks

I'm sorry that no one responded to your post.
My work increased my hours over the holidays - and that detracted from my ability to provide help here.

If you still need help, please post back and I'll respond within 24 hours.

As for the backup - have you tried:
- slaving the hard drive to another computer and recovering your files that way? (you'll need a device like this: CoolDrivesSATA and IDE Hard Drive & Optical Drive USB Adapter Kit COMBO
- using a bootable disk, such as a Live Linux distribution or a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD, in order to copy the data to a removable drive

A:BSOD when restarting after startup and when running some programs.

You don't have Windows 8.1 installed. Is there a particular reason why?Only 60 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 170 to 180 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors). The problems are starting too look like hardware/low-level driver problems. The first suspect is the hard drive, but this isn't certain. Please start by running these free hardware diagnostics: http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html Out of 8 memory dumps there were 4 different BSOD (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes (to include one's that specifically call out hardware problems). The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case. Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)- missing Windows Updates- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems- low-level driver problems- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here: http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.htmlYour UEFI/BIOS (version K56CB.205) dates from 2013. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system. If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it. WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.Numerous antivirus/firewall combinations installed. Please uninstall all but one. Never have more than one antivirus or one firewall running at one time (this includes the resident portion of MalwareBytes). Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :ASMMAP64.sys Thu Jul 2 05:13:26 2009 (4A4C7A36)LENOVO ATK Hotkey ATK0101 ACPI UTILITY (also found in Asus systems)}http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/homeLenovo.dohttp://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=ASMMAP64.sys ewusbmdm.sys Thu Sep 10 03:31:54 2009 (4AA8AB6A)USB Modem/Serial Device Driver - "Huawei Mobile Connect" package}http://consumer.huawei.com/en/support/downloads/index.htm or try the carrier that provided the modemhttp://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=ewusbmdm.sys ewusbdev.sys Mon Oct 12 03:23:21 2009 (4AD2D969)Huawei DataCard USB PN driver}http://forum.huawei.com/jive4/thread.jspa?threadID=330350&tstart=0&orderStr=9http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=ewusbdev.sys ewusbnet.sys Wed Oct 21 07:46:52 2009 (4ADEF4AC)US... Hi,

I'm getting a BSOD on startup and it won't boot as far a the login screen, the computer keeps restarting. I get the same problem when trying to boot into safe mode. I checked the BIOS and the CPU temp is averaging 70-80'c. I have a Corsair H80 which i have a feeling has failed.
My BSOD reads:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A97E8, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0X0000000000000000)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

A:BSOD on startup 0x0000007B and CPU running hot in BIOS

It sounds like your PC may be shutting down to save the CPU from damaging its self, the heat your seeing on your CPU is approaching dangerous you may want to look into getting a new CPU cooler. If you look at the specifications for your process or you can see that the Tcase (max operating temperature) is 72.6 degrees Celsius:

A:Processes running in Taskmanager, but no file that process says its running from

Those look like trojan files. If they are running processes..then they ARE in the system and the registry. Download hijackthis and post your log in the SECURITY section..not here. Someone will go through it for you.

Computer got infected by some nasties. The hard drive is constantly chattering and running the hard drive and system even when I am not using it. I've run superantispyware, kaspersky, malwarebytes. DDS file is attached. I've tried to clean it up but I am at the end of my span of knowledge. If I run hijackthis there are a lot of bizarre looking%%% files found, lots of BHOs, and the hosts file is probably corrupt. Have used ccleaner and revo to clean out old junk files. COMPUTER IS ***VERY SLOW***. This makes me sad. Thank you in advance for any help!!Also, have a lot of registry errors. Thanks again.

A:Vista unable to start in any mode, running startup repair gives BSOD

Test the hard drive first to get that out of the way before trying anything else, since trying to fix anything with a hard drive that's failed is pointless. You will need the drive maker's Diagnostic Software for DOS, & the links are here:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (if your drive maker does not have diagnostic software (eg Toshiba), you can use the Seagate software SeaTools for DOS from here: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

The DOS version is an ISO file from which you can create a bootable CD using IMGBurn: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Boot your faulty laptop from the CD to test the drive.

I'm running XP. I did an Ad-Aware scan and removed some tracking cookies. It also stated that I had 29 running processes. How do I find what is running to help speed up my PC, and also; which are essential? I have dial-up AOL. (I know, I know.) It's running like a horse-drawn computer. How can I get it up to at least steam-powered.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

I have 90 processes running when I go into task manager. This seems to be slowing my computer down. Where do I go to turn some of these off? I can't imagine I need all these running. I wish I knew more about computers, but with a little help, I think I can do it. Let me know if you need more info.

A:90 processes running.

It depends on what they are. First you need to identify the processes and understand what each of them do.Usually taking the time to google each one to see if they're needed. Black Viper's site is a good one to look at:http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htmJust be sure to follow his "SAFE" recommendations. Even then be cautious

Hallo. Time going by, I have noticed I have installed quite some applications on my computer.

I have Win XP SP2, Intel Pentium4 CPU - 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM (SSD), ATI Radeon X300 Series.

I notice that booting is taking really long after I select my user account and I hear a lot of hard disk activity. I believe this can be because virtual RAM is activated, but, before going to buy some extra RAM (and SSD memories are not so cheap), I wondered if I could have fixed the issue through some start up software, or some better organisation of the user accounts (e.g. one account for gaming, one for video processing) so that only the requested processes would be loaded each time.

Any tip is very appreciated. Thx

I am very new to this type of stuff and not very computer/tech savvy. I have around 120 processes being run, which I know are alot, and need to get rid of some of them, but are unsure which ones to get rid of.

Help please (and thank you!)

I am having trouble running certain programs on my computer. here are the specs: 1.9 ghz pentium 4 processor, nvidia geforce 3 video card, 512 mb DDRam, 60 gig harddrive, Windows Xp Professional. On some games that I install, when I try to run them, my computer crashes and a blue screen comes up saying it is doing a physical memory dump, and then it restarts itself. I was told this could be caused by to many processes running in the background. I went to the task manager right after a startup and there was 35 processes running. How can I get them to stop running without having to close them each time I boot up? And which ones would I close, I dont even know what any of them mean. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

belladonna,Welcome to Bleeping Computer. After reviewing the 2 processes that you mention, I feel your best option right now is to submit a HiJack This Log for our team to review. See How to submit a Hijackthis Log for instructions. Our HiJack Team are all volunteers and are very busy right now. You should receive a reply in 2-3 days. Please wait until a team member posts to your thread. Since our submitted logs are lined up by date and time, if you were to post into that topic before a team member replies, that reply would be the new date and time thus moving you backwards in the line. Hi,

I curently have 3 windows open, Avant browser, a msn conversation and Outlook.

If I use Task Manager it tells me I have 55 processes running, most at Zero but I have a feeling that I rather a lot. Is there a scan or anything like that that will tell me what ones i don't need?

Win XP home SP2, 1 gig Ram, 1.7g processor.

A:Running processes

Hi marchez....

55 is a lot but I have seen worse...however it's strange that most are not using any memory at all??? Are you sure the zero isn't below the CPU column?

You can type the image names into the following website for some further information on them:
http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

That will tell you whether the files are legit or associated with any spyware/viruses.

To reduce the number, you can access the program associated with the process and disable automatic startup...you may have to look around the settings to find it but it'll be there somewhere.

Also, disabling unneeded services will help reduce the amount but you should only disable the services you do not need or you may lose your internet connection and have severe stability issues. You can use the following guide as reference:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

To access services:
- Click Start -> Run -> type:
services.msc
- Click OK

Hope that lot helps :)

A:Running Processes

1. Go one google.com and search for something called "security task manager".
2. Download the program and install it on your PC or laptop.
3. After all that open it and look for any updating tasks running and stop or delete them if you like.

Good luck

There are quite a few problems in your log,but its no good me attempting to help beacause as soon as a moderator sees this post in here they will move it to the security forum, dont know why but they do ....

However I suggest you get ad-awareSE from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html and update it before running, get rid of all it finds

Then go here and download spybot http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp again update it before running and get rid of all it finds that is ticked in RED

Finally get CW Shredder from here http://www.soft32.com/download-CWShredder-19014-5.html and run and fix with that .....

Can someone please tell me what I can close on the Task Manager? Or, more obviously, what do I have to have running? There are usually 35 processes running - I don't know what they all do. I have an Acer AMD with only 512MB of memory, 50% of which is taken up with these programs. I have Windows XP Media - System Information says it is XP Professional.

The worst seems to be Windows Update which takes over occasionally, making the computer sound like it is grinding gears and slows all programs until it is finished. I have tried setting it to run only late in the evening, but it always appears in this list and seems to download randomly.
Thank you.

A:What are the necessary running processes for XP?

That is a very small number of processes for an average machine (I have 97 now, for example). Since services use no CPU unless active, they can pretty much be ignored.

50% is also a very small amount of RAM. Ideally, you want all of your RAM to be used all the time. That's what it is there for.

The odd thing about it is that my comp is pretty fast at things, but as you will see on this link I have way too many processes running, I need to know how to and what to end and what they might be, if anyone has a clue please let me know. http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/765/screenshot22ir.gif

A:Too Many Running Processes

You can look the various processes up in the database HERE at BC. Or use google for each one. Google can be your friend!but as you will see on this link I have way too many processes runningWhta constitues TOO many? As long as they are all legit and your computer is clean and running well, then I suggest to leave things alone. But again, that is IF your computer is clean and running well.Perhaps you have some programs running that you don't need. It might be easier to change these programs than it would to change the various processes.Start > Runtype "msconfig" (without the quotes)Click on the Startup tab. Here you will find a list of programs that start when you boot your computer. Uncheck any you don't want to start when you boot up. (You still will be able to start programs through their shortcuts or by going to Start > All Programs. Unchecked programs just won't start automatically at bootup and won't be running in the background.)You can Google entries or use the Bleeping Computer Startup Database HERE to research the various startup entries, as sometimes they can be a bit cryptic.BTW, that is an interesting name for a webpage that you had open in Firefox when you took the screenshot.

Disclaimer: not a computer braniac
I recently got a new laptop/notebook, with Vista already on it, which so far I don't like. Anyway... it doesn't seem to move very fast, actually not noticeably faster than our old pc that had not even half the memory. When I did ctrl+alt+del it shows 63 processes running! That seems excessive to me as our old computer showed roughly 30some. I have taken out some things, such as links and a preinstalled Sims Life Stories game and I think that had to have helped as it had previously said 70 processes running. How do I know what else I can get rid of and how do I do it?
Info: hp pavilion, AMD 64 Athlon X2, nvidia geforce go 7150m graphics... what else...

Hello!

This is my first post and visit here so please guide me in the right direction if I'm doing anything wrong.

Lately my laptop is going very slow. A good example is that I`m running Chrome, Winamp and when I open a new tab in Chrome, type something and press enter my CPU Usage skyrockets and the music goes in slow motion. Once my windows crashed and got BSOD.

I've tried to remove some processes by googling them to see what they do and removed the ones I tought are unnecesary. It jumps from 0% to 63% from what I've seen watching it for a minute. Even the processes reduce/increase themselves.

Please have a look through my processes and advise me on which I should remove.

Thank you!

Every time I start up my computer, I have way too many processes running, which is slowing down my computer. I know how to configure the startup menu, I'm just not sure what needs to start up.

A:Too many processes running!

Try this link
http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

It tells you what the various bits in your startup programs do and you can then decide which to deactivate.

When I open the task manager it shows 15 svchost.exe processes running. Is this normal it seems like alot, I've experienced alot of virus attacks lately and I'm trying to learn about all the stuff running on my laptop to try and better the performance of it. Also on the startup menu what is dsactivate?

A:Processes running, Why so many?

Right click and select "end process" for the selected program to terminate it.

Also, 15 svchost.exe processes is a bit on the high end, but not anything crazy. If you are suspecting that you might have a virus, I'd suggest that you run a scan with your antivirus, just in case.

Cheers,

My Microsoft Office kept adding me for a product key so my friend downloaded this torrent that had a ton of Office product keys in it. After she downloaded it I got a bunch of malware, and now I notice that there are a few processes that are running that I've never seen before. They are efw.exe *32 (listed twice on task manager, one is using over 410k memory and the other 4k) and ewi.exe *32. In the task manager their description is 'Daniels'.
I just wanted to know if these are things I should be getting rid of (not sure how I'd go about that, either), or processes that shold be running. Thanks!

i ran a system scan and found 59 processes running... how do i know what to get rid of?

A:too many processes running??

Strictly speaking, you don't really have to have anything in startup. The only things I allow to start on bootup on my machine are my antivirus and firewall.Personally,I don't find it all that difficult to start programs when I need them and shut them down when I'm done with them.

Click Start/Run Type: msconfig OK
Click on the Startup tab and uncheck anything you don't need to start on bootup.

To learn ALL there is to know about "Startup" go here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

As far as the running processes go,check this out:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
and check out the service configurations, there are a lot of services that you can disable to help your system run better and faster

Can anyone tell me how I figure out:
what some of the processes that are running on my machine
whether they are necessary
How I stop unnecessary processes running

Many thanks

A:Running Processes?

Right click on the taskbar, bring up Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and it will show you what's running. To get more information (whether they are necessary) go here http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/other/a/ and look them up.

If anything shows up as being questionable, post a HijackThis log.

I believe I have too many processes running in the background. How do I determine what I have running and what is not necessary?

Relevancy 49.02%

Hi all,

I have noticed my computer running a bit laggy recently and wondered if it had too many processes running? There are 70-75 once I boot up and anything up to 100 once I start using it. I only use it for basic operations like surfing, email, a little gaming etc. I am very keen keen to make sure there isn't anything nasty running in the background.

I have looked at my start-up programs and have 7 selected. Does this seem normal?

Thanks,
WWJ

A:Too many processes running?

Hello,

70 Processes is not too abnormal, what is your CPU usage % on start up?
I would advise going to control panel and removing any software you do not use, also run anti-virus software and get a clean up tool such as CCleaner.

I have a small question. I periodically check Windows task manager to see what and how many processes are running. Lately I have noticed that I have 5 copies of the process SVCHOST.EXE running at the same time. Is this something I should be worried about or is it common to have this happen? If it is a problem, what should I do about it.

A:Running Processes

Having multiple SVCHOST instances open and running concurrently is normal for Windows and should in itself not be a matter of concern.

John

I recently let ad-ware scan my registry. It came back with 15 running processes. I went to Microsofts Windows Process library and check out all processes. I came back with 4 backdoor trojans. How do I get rid of them. I am running Windows XP home edition.

A:Running processes

Please do this. Click here: http://www.sherrylynn.us/HijackThis.exe to download Hijack This. It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the log and advise.

Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and any anti-malware real-time protection programs you are using so they will not interfere with the entries we will be fixing in HijackThis. Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. Run HijackThis, and press "Scan." When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present): (Please be careful and do not check any other boxes)CODER3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)O2 - BHO: Pop-Up Blocker BHO - {3C060EA2-E6A9-4E49-A530-D4657B8C449A} - (no file)O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked" to remove the entries you checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.Other than that, nothing of significant concern showing in your log and no obvious signs of infection. Are you having any specific issues that require a request for assistance with malware removal other than too many processes? One reason your system is slow is that you have too many applications loading at startup when Windows boots. Almost all applications you install want to startup when Windows loads. If you allow all these startups, they will compete for and use system resources resulting in poor performance and a slow system. Many of these programs are not needed and disabling them can save resources and improve performance as they are available from Start > Programs or an icon on the desktop. These in particular can be safely disabled:CODEO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYERO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottimeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exeO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe" -schedulerAlthough we could fix non-essential start-up entries with HijackThis, a better alternative is to use a free Startup Manager like one of the following:Starter by CodeStuffAutorunsStartup ManagerStartEd LiteStartup Control Panel by Mike LinYou will be provided with a list of programs that load when Windows starts. If you untick an entry it will no longer run at startup. This will allow you to experiment and see how your system performs with any of them disabled.-- Note: some startup programs are necessary so be careful what you disable. If you are unsure what any of the program entries are or if they are safe to disable, search the name using Google .Or search the following databases:BC's Startup Programs DatabaseSystemLookup StartupList IndexProcessLibrary.comOther reasons for slowness include disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, unnecessary services running, too many browser Add-ons (toolbars), not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.Your log shows that mdm.exe is running on your system. At start up, there seem to be a lot of processes running. I do CAD, and it shows that 22 processes are running. Is this normal? I have Win XP. The CPU useage only goes up to about 5%, and then even goes back down to 0%, but I was just wondering if 22 processes running at start up was high.

A:A lot of processes running?

With just Outlook, IE6, NAV2002 and task manager open I have 19 processes running. 22 isn't beyond the realms of normality. There are probably multiple instances of svchost, which bumps the number up, but you need all of them, and most of the rest will be just the normal background NT processes.

Unless you have noticeable slowdown or disk paging I wouldn't worry about it.

I have windows xp MCE and i noticed that my computer is not running up to par.

I noticed that i have between 54-60 Processes running at a time.

I did some searching around on the net to see which programs i didnt need running and that helped a little bit, i also read that its prefered you have between 25-35 processes.

I was wondering if you could help me out on what programs i dont need running.

I'll post a pic of what is running

A:How many processes should i have running?

There is no way I can read your screen print, but I assume that these are from your task manager.

You can look them up here:

I don't think there is a magic number since no one knows what you want but you. I have 67 listed.

Around 25 services running is fairly normal Go to: http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm
and it has all of the tweaks needed to dump the crap you don't need at start up. Follow the guides and you can't go wrong.

For that matter does anyone know of a site that lists possible running processes and what they actually are?

A:Too many running processes

Im not even sure I would disable any of those processes, they all look fairly important. instead, to boost performance I would suggest going into your control panel, opening the system folder, go to advanced, performance, settings, then click adjust for best performance. then in the same window, click advanced, virtual memory, and set it to system managed size. those two things alone should improve your computers performance drastically.

When I do ctrl-alt-del it says I have 46 processes running. Lately, for some reason, my laptop upon start up has been kind of slow. Like the fan will run and it will sound like it's working hard and for a few seconds I can't really do much.

I run Adaware and stuff so I'm pretty sure it's not junk slowing me down.

How do I know what processes I need and don't need and how to I stop them from always starting up?

A:Too many processes running?

I just checked and I have 79 processes running.
I see no ill effects.

The best way to tell if you have unecessary processes running is to let the antivirus software and anti-spyware software do their jobs. Do the "Five Steps" as Adaware is not enough: http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=15968

When you get a clean bill of health do:

. Empty your trash: http://aumha.org/a/health.php#tip6

Hi,70 Running Processes! HelpWhy do you think this is a problem? The more programs active in the background, the more programs that startup with Windows, the more processes present. I don't see anything suspicious here.

Hi.

I think I have too many processes running rightnow. My computer seems to be very slow even to the point of me typing too fast for it to keep up and I am not a master keyboardist. (as you might be able to tell). Anyway... My cpu usgae is at 100% and my computer sounds like it is doing over time. How can I get a good idea of what I can and need to 'end tasks' for?

Thanks Craig

63 processes shouldn't be alarming you at all.Quite normal number. The only safe way to control processes is by controlling startups. Some of them MAY be unnecessary.Let's see...Download, and install Quick Startup: http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.htmlGo File>Export, save report, and paste it into your next post.

A:too many processes running?

Hi Exodus138,
You really have to stay away from P2P file sharing software like Vuze, Frostwire, etc..
The "free" download files are loaded with infections and undesirable adware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
(Some of the items below may not show in Add/Remove programs).
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Somoto Toolbar
Vuze
Vuze toolbar
Vuze Remote Toolbar

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Double click to run it.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
---------------------------------------------
Download the OTL Scanner
Please download OTL.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------
Run a Scan with OTL

Double click on the OTL icon to run it.
Check the boxes labeled :
Scan All Users
LOP check
Purity check
Extra Registry > Use SafeList

Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
Click on the Run Scan button at the top left hand corner. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so.
When the scan starts, OTL may appear to be frozen while it runs. Please be patient.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
These are automatically saved in the same location as OTL. (desktop)
OTL.txt will be open on your desktop, and Extras.txt will be minimized in your taskbar.
The Extras.txt file will only appear as a running Notepad document the very first time you run OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these two files, one at a time, and post them as a reply. Use separate replies if more convenient.

How many processes does XP NEED to run.
My HP Pavillion uses 36 processes requiring 145 MB.

Does anyone know how to reduce this number.

What is iPod.exe and is it needed? 4MB
iTuneshelper.exe how do I diable? 3MB
I think the biggest on is svchost.exe at 36MB

are all these required and how do I stop them from starting at boot up?

Old version of HiJack

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi, I'm new to the forums.
I have been getting popups every now and again for some time now, i use trend micro pc-cillin as a real-time program, and using ad-aware se 6.0 to get rid of ****...but they still occur, even soon after a scan. How can i show you a list of my running processes? I'm not sure what other information i can give to help you help me. Any help is desired. I am also wondering why "iexplore.exe" is constantly a running process and using a lot of memory...I use mozilla firefox and rarely open internet explorer. Regards, Chris

A:Running Processes

Well you can also use Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/. It's another spyware scanner.

Just update, download updates, then immunize.

But if you really want to see if you are clean use this program: Hijack This

It is used for malware removal. Extract it to C:\HJT then post the ENTIRE logfile in the HJT Forums here

Hi, this may be a stupid question but I have a pc which I have cleaned as best as I can and is still running very slow, I have realised there are loads of processes running which appears to be slowing my connection up, is there an application which I can download which may clear them or do I really have to google them all and dissable the ones that aren't needed?

Many thanks,

Michelle

Same thing going on with my XP. I've got 60 processes running. I don't know about "Hijackthis". How can I get it? Once I have it, then I guess I can post the results after running it and get suggestions.

Hi everyone,

At any one time I have approx 60 processes running, even after just booting up my computer. Although I am not a computer expert, this seems like too many to me. I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me if this definitely is too many to run at once, and if there is some way I can post a list of the running processes and have someone with more knowledge help me get rid of some of them. I have previously had much success using this site with another account which I now forget, but thanks in advance for your replies, this website is great

A:Too many processes running??

i dont know too much but it could just be a slow computer. it would help alot to know your system specs. For internet, i use a 98 sony vaio with pentium 3 proccessor. the only programs on it are iTunes, word, and programs that came wit XP upgrade. It still get up to 100% processes when it isn't running anything. More information would help.

When I pull up my Windows Task Manager and click the Processes tab there are always about 50 items running in there. I don't remember this in the past. I have Win XP home. Most are .exe files.

Is this normal? If not how do I get rid of them?

Any help or guidance will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi all.Ive copied all my running processes from task manager, in hopes that you guys can identify each one and tell me what it is and what it does. Im trying to see if any are spyware or viruses etc. Thankyou.HEres the pictures

A:Running processes

Well, even for some of the legititamtely named processes, it's hard to tell if they are actually real because virus processes can be disguised as a real process.
mspaint.exe is just mspaint
firefox.exe is firefox
taskmgr.exe is the Task Manager
svchost.exe, there's always a bunch of these, but can be a disguise for a virus

A:Too many processes running

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

O9 - Extra button: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\tmpUpgrade\..\EmpirePoker.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\tmpUpgrade\..\EmpirePoker.exe

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52...meInstaller.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log, and let us know how everything goes.

So I have been at school, and when I got back I set up my computer and have been using it, but tonight mine was off so I wne to my parents computer. It is an older comp (933 mhz P3) so I thought is running slower is not that big of a deal, but is seems to get slower and slower. So I looked a the running processes and most of them are in caps... I know on mine they are not.

What is causing this?

should I be worried? if so what do I have to do to fix it. they have some important files on there (also backed up)

please get back soon

thanks

What are he bare bone processes does Windows XP require to operate properly? At present I have 39 running with no programs open.

A:Necessary running processes

I stumbled across an extensive service list at Black Viper's.

He also explains how to free up some of your Ram and VM, at Windows XP Super Tweaks.

Even with all this info I had a hard time figuring out what all the processes were, svchost.exe is the worst. You might find process viewer helps a little.
