Preferred Solution: My PC BSOD while I was away, computer illiterate mother unplugged PC

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: My PC BSOD while I was away, computer illiterate mother unplugged PC

Lighten up on your Mom, you only have one.

As for your crash,

Code:
ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000185 - The I/O device reported an I/O error.

DISK_HARDWARE_ERROR: There was error with disk hardware

BUGCHECK_STR: 0x7a_c0000185
Looks like you need to do some tests on your hard drive.

Please perform the following tests,

chkdsk /r

SeaTools for DOS and Windows

This is a good idea as well,

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Let us know the results.

I started getting BSOD today. I tried rolling back to a date it worked but no go. I tried every option on the F8 at start up screen. I added and removed all new programs. I allocated more memory in the system. I restarted ofcourse but no worky.

My system was made by a buddy who is computer savy but now out of the country (military). It is 2 yrs old, Win 7 64bit (I didnt get a disk so I dont know how/if copy is registered), 4 gb ram, twin intel core 2 duo cpu E8400 3.0 ghz.

The BSOD happen during a restart. I had previously loaded some software (peer guardian 2 and a tried to driver signature overriders) all software was removed and sucessful restarts accomplished before I got the BSOD. I had previously gotten a memory low notice but I dont understand it because I have a good amount of memory and I dont do much on the puter. Usually have Facebook, vuse and e-mail running???

Love to help but no DMP files included in upload, try this method

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

I'm in the process of changing over some of our work computers (auto salvage yard) from ancient XP boxes to moderately modern Windows 7 units.  I'm not a "computer guy", but I'm literate enough.  My co-workers on the other hand, have very limited computer knowledge.  Basically I want to set these up so they're more or less fool proof.  On the XP machines I'm running Avira, WinPatrol, and Secunia PSI, and that seems to do a pretty good job of keeping things up to date and preventing these monkeys from loading the computers up with viruses and malware.  What would be the best set up for a Windows 7 machine in this situation?

A:Best set up for the computer illiterate?

Hey there 16vCorey.

Here's my 2 cents worth.

I would move from Avira to Avast! (which is also free) and also install the Free version of MalwareBytes (MBAM), which can be found here.

Not sure if Avira does it since it's been awhile since I've used it (I left it for Avast!) but the free version of Avast! does some real-time blocking and even before I had the Pro Version of MBAM (which I'm running now) Avast! did a pretty good job of keeping me out of the weeds....since I don't always surf safe.

And, to keep things easy for your self, you may want to stay with the 2.0 version of SecuniaPSI since the latest version does not play well with Windows 7 which I'm running and found out the hard way.

If you need links to the 2.0 version, let me know.

And please forgive any typos, I'm out here fussing around on the Internets with a Live Lucid Puppy and it's a bit clunky.

Hope that helps.

Hello to all!

I am new to this and will try to explain my situation as much as possible. I have this laptop that was given to me 3 years ago. It is still fine however for the couple of months the following have been happening:

- My computer shut down on me twice with no warning at all
- I took my computer to a "techie" who told me and charged me some arms and legs for a 2 GB add on but it seems that I am still having the same problems with performance.
- Can't view any videos online. They will start downloading and play but then will slow down. I will be able to hear the clips but the video will be at such a slow pace...It is so depressing.

Please, should someone be kind enough to help me. I would appreciate it so much!!

Thank you.

Hi, just so I'm not fooling anyone, "I Know Next To Nothing, Feel Free to Educate Me!!" With that said, here we go. I recently purchased a Gateway M-6846 lap top and had the option of a 32 or 64 bit platform. 64 sounded better(bigger number you understand) and the saleperson said 64 bit is the wave of the future and so thats where I sit at the present. I use my lap top for emails, word processing(Word 2007), to play poker, and to send and receive pictures of my grandbabies. How does that sit with 64 bit? Do I need it or should I switch to 32 bit? Is Media player 11 compatible with 64 bit? So far I'm not sure that I really see the advantages that the salesperson spoke of. In my ignorance, am i just missing it?
I have more questions, but I'd better start here. THANKS Jim

A:Please help a computer illiterate out

There's no real difference between the 64 bit and 32 bit versions to most users.
If you want to use older hardware there may be issues.
Also, some hardware doesn't come with 64 bit drivers.

Most 32 bit programs will work on 64 bit OS' - although there are still a few holdouts.
Most significantly, if you use the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer you'll notice that there's no 64 bit version of Adobe/Macromedia Flash.
But it works just fine with the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer.

The biggest caution is to ensure that there are 64 bit drivers available for any hardware that you may want to use/purchase. Beyond that, just sit back and enjoy!

Nope, the WAN input is a DSL modem, you have no access to it otherwise.

Your memory modules are not paired correctly or it's mixed improper. You generally want to have the same types of ram in a pair and put them in the colored memory slots. If you was messing with the bios settings and not messing with hardware, then you have messed with the timings or ganged/unganged them. If you're not sure what you changed you can also try to go back and use a saved config or reset to factory defaults.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :Restart your computerAfter hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".Choose your usual account.Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmdSelect option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files. You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txtWarning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.=======================

I have an Inspiron 1520. All of a sudden, the display went to huge fonts and icons. I have tried in the display area to fix it to the way it was before, but cannot get it OK. The icons look a bit blurry and stretched a bit and the fonts are too big as well. Does not matter what I change in appearance or settings. Don't know to check the drivers or anything.
Would really appreciate any help I can get!
Thank you.

I am seriously struggling with windows eight. I don't use computers often, about 1 hr a day to browse net. don't understand any of the lingo.
I would like to plan my kitchen layout on here and have tried numerous websites but none of them work. They either do nothing, show a blank screen, tell me to download flash player (which I have) or shows a blank box with cross in the corner. It never tells me what I am missing or any other info. Sometimes pictures, games or videos won't load but again no info is given.
Can anyone help with as little computer speak as possible please.

A:Basic help for computer illiterate

steer clear of programs ccleaner and the like they have a habit of leaving the computer in a worse state than before you ran them

what are you running
video card brand and model
cpu
m/board
ram
power supply

wattage

check the listings in the bios for 12v line voltages and cpu temperatures and post them

My boyfriends computer randomly starts playing music (scares me to death while watching scary movies at night) when no one is touching it. I ran an AVG scan the other day and it says that I have two trojan viruses in the recylcing bin but that they cant be removed. I have an exterenal hard drive so I have almost everything backed up on there but I think I gave him the virus and I need to fix it for him :/*Moderator Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the appropriate forum. ~ Queen-Evie*

Hello. I am experiencing very high CPU - spikes at 100% and freezes and have several iexplore.exec*32 running at the same time. I read the post that advises me to download HijackThis - the problem is that I do not know how to disable script blocker - nor do I know whether I have 32 bit or 64 bit. Or does the *32 after iexplore refer to that? Please can someone give me step by step instructions so I can get started - apologies for my ignorance - my computer knowledge is very basic!

i have a Dell Inspiron15 5000 series laptop with windows 10. I'm not sure what all that means, but it's printed on the laptop so I thought you might need to know that. It has 3 microsoft games that are programmed into it (solitaire, Sudoku and mahjong) they
have a different game every morning and keep track of your points throughout the month. anyway, I have been playing them for several moths every morning only today they won't let me into any of the games. i've tried off and on all day long and none of them
will let me in. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but i'm afraid that is as far as my knowledge will take me. Please help this old granny. Iknow that games don't seem real important to most people, but they occupy my time and attention when I'm lonely.
Thank you so much,

2. Install it.

First of all I'm not completely sure I have it, but when I try to download that patch, this is what I get:

"The Windows 2000-KB823980-X86-ENU(1).EXE file is linking to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtShutdownSystem."

Then I get the OK box. I click OK, and it says, "Access to the specified device, path or file is denied."

Help please!!!!

What computer and operating system do you have? What memory? Did you install the ATA RAdeon 9250 drivers from a disc that was included, or from a download you created from the ATI site?

A:online crashes... computer illiterate needs help

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to update Windows at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. If you don’t have a fast internet connection, you can get the security update CD from Microsoft for free.

Go to the bottom of this message to get the latest version of HijackThis. If the site is down, you can also get it here.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Desktop or Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Program’s Window if they exist:

New.net

Make sure to close any open browsers you have. Check and fix the following in HijackThis (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {8F6069C0-E0C1-11D8-A7DD-0010B57BA842} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QZDRF.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mdac_runonce] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qzdrfc] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\qzdrfc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QZDRF.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\qzdrfc.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Please download Adaware and install it. Make sure to check for any updates before running it. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

After that’s done, restart and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it’s clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read my anti-spyware section and use the tools provided.

1. When I go to attach a file to an email and click browse it doesnt bring up a window or when I click add a folder to itunes, it doesnt open the window.

2. My system restore doesnt work, that was the first thing i tried. I can choose a restore point and it will stop but it will not make it all the way through and shut down.

A:Major Computer Illiterate seeks help

Ok im gonna take a little of johnwill's words here but here we go. You can backup in about 2 ways. One is to copy files to another destination. There i reccomend cobian backup but it will not backup the operating system as well. This is a free software:
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm
Now of course you can also do a drive image. This is basically an image of the pc's operating system, applications, and any files you may have saved on it. For that there is acronis true image. It can do the image, schedule when it will run, and fully automate the process if need be. It is not free but can be purchased as well from the website here:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Now, you will need some type of medium for saving the backups to. Personally, i purchased an external hard drive enclosure kit which turns a standard internal hd to an external one but you could also buy a sealed box with the external hd and save your images and file backups to that. Another option is dvd which is possible if you have a dvd burner. This you can save your images to a dvd rom or purchase re-writable dvds so that you can write many times to the same disc (hd is most cost effective in my opinion). That is pretty much all you need to know about backups.

I am using windows 2000, and have the worm 'W32.Kw.C.Worm. that I can't get rid of. I read a similar problem on this forum, but there are a few problems. First, I encountered problems trying to install Norton internet Security 2004 so don't even have it on my system yet. Second, the instructions said to go to a site and download "highjack this!'. When I tried, I couldn't find it, even in their directory. Third, I'm not well enough versed to figure it out on my own as to what to remove and what not to. Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

Hi Everyone!

First, I've heard great things about you all. Thanks for volunteering your time to help those of us held captive by our technological ignorance.

Simply put, I think I am infected. The computer is incredibly slow, especially when downloading files. The web pages will occasionally re-direct to other pages. Malware Bytes hasn't helped. My Norton Antivirus has alerted me several times that it has prevented an attack. Any help you are able to provide will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

David.

-- If you have previously used MBAM, there may be several logs showing in the list.Click on the log name to highlight it.Go to the bottom and click on Open. The log should automatically open in notepad as a text file.Go to Edit and choose Select all.Go back to Edit and choose Copy or right-click on the highlighted text and choose Copy from there.Come back to this thread, click Add Reply, then right-click and choose Paste.Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Logs are saved to the following locations:-- XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-yyyy-mm-dd-- Vista, Windows 7, 2008: C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-yyyy-mm-ddPlease download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.zip) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to print out and follow all instructions for performing a scan or refer to these instructions with screenshots.Extract (unzip) the file to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the Desktop. Vista/Windows 7 users refer to these instructions if you're unsure how to unzip a file.If you don't have an extracting program, you can download TDSSKiller.exe and use that instead.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. When the program opens, click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.<- Important!!
Note: If 'Suspicious' objects are detected, you will be given the option to Skip or Quarantine. Skip will be the default selection.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.-- If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to these instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to redownload TDSSKiller and randomly rename it before downloading and saving to the computer.-- For any files detected as 'Suspicious' (except those identified as Forged to be cured after reboot) get a second opinion by submitting to Jotti's virusscan or VirusTotal. In the "File to upload & scan" box, browse to the location of the suspicious file and submit (upload) it for scanning/analysis.

I downloaded an update for Windows XP and ever since then if I try to use itunes or media player or anything it says that I have a problem with my audio configuration. I've gone to my control panel and it says that I have no audio device. I do get the sounds when I turn on the computer but nothing else. What do I need to do to fix this? Thank yor for any help you can give me!!!

A:selective sound - I'm pretty computer illiterate - help please?

you need to install drivers for the type of audio card you have (assuming you have one!) If it is internal on your motherboard, you need the drivers for then motherboard. If it is a card, you need those instead.

According to him, he was on e-bay and a window popped up, saying: "You may have viruses on your computer. You need to download this program." He, of course, immediately downloaded. He's not very clear on the details, but apparently it was something like "Win XPyware removal system". After he downloaded, Norton popped up and said he had a virus. It scanned, but apparently couldn't remove it. Now his internet won't work, and there is a little "security toolbox" icon on the Start Bar. It occasionally pops something up and tells him adware is blocking his internet and that he needs to download something else.

What can he do to get rid of this?

I have a blue screen and the STOP c000021a fatal system error message when I tried to restart my Dell D430 laptop that uses XP and I have no idea what to do. I am a tech illiterati and I am using another computer to ask this question. I don't even know how to turn the laptop OFF with this message present.

Would love some advice

A:blue screen and a computer illiterate at the helm

Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds it will turn off. When you boot up and hear the beep, press the F8 key and then select "Last known good configuration". If that does not work, you may need to run the repair utility on the Windows CD.

On my home system, I keep Avira AV and Comodo Firewall.

Avira appears to have become some kind of subscription service, when I downloaded and installed it on a troubled computer recently, asking for a user account and password. Comodo is a product I've personally come to enjoy, but after setup, it prompts for EVERYTHING. And even after it's setup and running, you'll still get prompted (bullzip pdf, for me, seems to trigger it every time).

What recommendations can you give for silent, plug-and-play kinds of AV and Firewall, that I could install on the computer of a senior citizen? I need something that just passively blocks and scans on a regular schedule without much user interaction at all.

I took a quick look through the sticky topics and didn't catch anything as specific as my request (or maybe I just looked for it in the wrong ways). Could you guys offer some suggestions, please?

A:AV and Firewall for Computer Illiterate Senior Citizens

You could read this.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-tame-comodo-defense-without-disabling-it.htm

Dont use that antivirus thingy..... Whats a virus.... lol

Not using antivirus NOT RECCOMENDED for Windows.

 A bit of Advice  here.

If you are not sure of what you are doing I suggest you create a back up first, then mess with the firewall just in case you DO something wrong . You can just restore the system.
Anybody "tinkering" with pc settings should have good tested backups first just incase. Yes even all the people who say I know what I am doing.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping ComputerWe apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far. Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. Even if your computer appears to act better, you may still be infected.Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.Once we start working together, please reply back within 3 days or this thread may be closed so we can help others who are waiting. We need to create an OTL report,Please download OTL from this link.Save it to your desktop.Double click on the icon on your desktop.Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:netsvcsmsconfigdrivers32 /all%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles%systemroot%\system32\*.sys /90%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*%systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll%systemroot%\*. /mp /sHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AUCREATERESTOREPOINTClick the Quick Scan button. The scan should take a few minutes. Please copy and paste both logs in your reply. We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal AdviceThen create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new OTL log. Hello everyone.
Unfortunately I have had to sign up today due to a problem that will be much appreciated if solved. I am currently running Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite. Although I don't actually know if I am posting this under the right thread.

Today I was suddenly faced with unusually slow boot up and once started, everything became slow and refused to load, and when pressing ctrl alt del, I was faced with a black screen and no cursor to which I had to force a shut down. When starting again, the boot up was slow and skipped to the welcome screen before I even entered my password and became stuck.

After booting again, same issue as at first. Then started in safe mode without networking and ran Malwarebytes which came up clean. I am rather illiterate with computers and so am in a pickle here. Advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks, Tess.

A:Boot up issue facing a computer illiterate human.

Reboot or turn on the machine. As soon as you see your machine's name logo splash screen keep tapping F8. Go to "Advanced Options" or "Repair Computer" Select your language then "Repair Your Computer" An installation of Windows should be detected after that select "Next"

If that does not fix the issue. Do the same as before go to Next again go to command prompt type in

However, this includes software that I don't THINK I need. Do I just need the correct cables? I am definately unable to hook up a firewire port to my computer, so looking for a way around that.
Thanks for any help -- and remember, try not to make answers too technical -- it will lose me.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

According to this PDF: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11349_div/11349_div.PDF
You have: 1 low-profile AGP 4x slots

If that's your computer, then I would say, don't upgrade any internal part, upgrade the entire computer (instead of purchasing a new hard to get 4X AGP card)

Hi

Go here http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
and do an online virus scan.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the exact file name and file location so you can delete it yourself.

download cwshredder
http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/...0-17-150.shtml
fix anything found

REBOOT.

download the new hijackthis ,the one you have is an old version
http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/...10-17-69.shtml
scan again with HJT , and post a new log.

Since there are tons of BSODs I received, I mean a lot, I'll be posting this thread then be uploading the BSODs in a minute or so.
Here are my laptop specs:
ASUS K42jc-VX167
HDD: 320 GB SATA
HDD Paritions: 2
RAM: 2GB DDR3
VRAM: 1GB Nvidia 310m CUDA

Intel Core i5 [email protected] GHz turbo upto 2.8GHz
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

P.S. Oh, if this would help, when my dad bought the laptop, we opted to use a 30-day trial Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, then later used an activator on it. It was fine, but my dad forgot to turn off the updates, so, OS was detected as "not genuine" and had the dreaded black desktop background with the "This is not a genuine copy of windows tattoo" at the bottom right. I then used the REMOVEWAT to get rid of the nuisance and plan to format the machine later on since I'm very bust with stuff. But for now, I want to get rid of the random BSODs. Thanks!

Hi,
am using windows 7 x64.
i had BSOD problem and found out the problem is mother boards ram slots and one of my ram is also malfunctioning.

After replacing with a new different mother board i am getting BSOD in startup.

i thought windows 7 will automatically accept the new chipset. Is there are any ways to prevent from reinstalling windows again ?

thank you.

Note : since the system is getting BSOD in the startup i couldn't get the dump file.

A:My Mother's Computer

Hello, and welcome to the forums.

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I mainly use Opera as a primary browser. My mother knows nothing about computers, so I wan't to make sure my Linux Box is safe from any crap! Should I have to protect myself if I am using Linux? Is WOT (Web Of Trust) and AdBlock fine? If not, then could some people give me some tips on making sure my mom can't do something stupid or clicking on an ad that has a drive by download. AND I WILL NOT SWITCH TO ANOTHER BROWSER, I love Opera, It has done me very well on my slow internet (Opera Turbo).

A:Mother going to use computer. Help us all!

First of all, set up a user account for her - I presume you can do this in Linux - then she can use any browser she wants  or prefers without affecting your beloved Opera. Also, with her own account, she cannot affect your own data or work and you can restrict her user privileges if you wish to be that protective.

As for as your mother doing something 'stupid' - well, we are all capable of that !  I have no user experience of the software you mention, but if it works for you, just make sure it is kept up to date. In my experience, and I have a fair bit of it, older users tend to be more cautious than younger ones at least in part because they don't entirely trust either computers or the internet !

I also think you had better hope that your Mum isn't browsing BC !

A:My Mother-in-Law's Computer

Hi m.hoyer. It looks like the log is incomplete but that might be due to the infection so let's try and clean it up and see what we get. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.Step #1Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.ImportantYour copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it is run from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted. If it is run from inside a compressed file then the backups are not created at all. Please open My ComputerDouble-click on Local Disk (C:)Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.Step #2Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:Restart the computer. As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.Press the Enter key.Step #3Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htmR3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rznqerbimpugm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bevzpx.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [satmat] C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IST Service] C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [???K0?4W}??z?[8C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\lsemxmfr.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wyWm?"????ig?Y] C:\WINDOWS\lsemxmfr.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [???K0?4W}??z?ig?C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\lsemxmfr.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [[email protected]???]??"????iC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\lsemxmfr.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [[email protected]???]??"???K0C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\lsemxmfr.exeNow close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.Step #4We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:Click Start.Open My Computer.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.Select the View tab.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.Click Yes to confirm.Click OK.Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\bevzpx.exeC:\WINDOWS\satmat.exeC:\WINDOWS\lsemxmfr.exeC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\ <--folderStep #5Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. A:Unknown BSOD on Mother-in-laws system

When trying to run a SFC /scannow I receive the following error:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

To resolve this problem, perform the System File Checker scan in safe mode, and make sure that the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under %WinDir%\WinSxS\Temp.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833/

While their system has the one Temp folder mentioned, PendingRenames, and the permissions appear to be correct. Neither I nor my In-laws have the PendingDeletes folder, and my system works perfectly.

Cheers

Edit, the folder exists, just a hidden file.

Hi, so today I unplugged my computer while it was still running by accident. Now it wont start at all, no lights, no fans, nothing. I am concerned that it may be a problem with my power supply (maybe fried it or something). And no its not a problem with the cord (I tried a different one), its not a problem with the power switch (the one that you switch to either circle or line) because I tried it both ways. However recently my computers power button stopped working so my brother hooked up an old keyboard to my computer so to start it I will press a key on that keyboard and it will start up my computer, so I have to keyboards one to start the computer up and one to type. So in summary im not really sure what the problem is but im 90% sure it has something to do with either my "power keyboard" of my Power Supply so yeah. Any help will be apreciated

I am having this issue and have been searching online for days with no solution, so hoping someone here can help..
I have a dell laptop that suddenly started getting this message about network cable is unplugged, when it in fact isn't.. I cannot run ipconfig, i get an error that says it's not allowed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. The light on the network port is on, and I've tried several known working cables with no luck. I even went so far as to buy a dlink ethernet adapter that plugs into the laptop slot (pcm I think it's called) and this network card has the same issue, however works perfectly in another machine. I have tried winsock repairs I found online, but having no luck anywhere.
Any suggestions? Any further questions? Thanks!

John

A:Network cable unplugged error, but it's not unplugged

If it is not unplugged, you have a damaged socket, damaged cable, or damaged or defective ethernet card.
What error flags to you have in the Device Manager?
What is your Dell model and how old is it?
Using a strong light and a magnifying glass, look for bent or twisted wire in the ethernet socket., or just plain ol dirt, dust, hair, and fiber.
Still, a bad cable is most user's most likely problem. Do't forget that the other end of the connection can give you the same error message.

Whoa!!! There's only 2% free space on the C:\ drive. Please immediately transfer off enough stuff to get 15% free space.

Transferring large files may give you errors (anything over 1 gB most likely). If so, then start by transferring lot's of smaller files until you get enough free space to allow the larger files to be transferred.

Once that's done, please see if there's any change in the system and then run these tests:

Ok, My Mother has a Hp Pavillion with Windows XP and I am still back in Win98 on my computer, so I don't know diddly about her computer and I desperately don't want to mess it up.

Here's what's wrong with her computer: She CANNOT get online, modem diagnostics say the modem is working fine but, when I try to connect to the internet it says it can't connect, can't find the modem, modem unavailable etc... it gives different messages depending on it's mood.

My Ma has asked me to install a new modem for her but I thought I would post here before I open her computer case and void her warranty or do something drastic like reinstall XP all together.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

A:mother in laws computer please help

Hi....

Download and keep this just in case you have any connection problem with the below fix...you may not need to use it

Download WinsockFix If you need to use it unzip it then double-click on it to run it.

-------------------------------------

First get the LSPFix and run it....To remove aklsp.dll from your winsock layers click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox and check all the instances of aklsp.dll
(and nothing else). Then move checked file/s to the "Remove" pane and click Finish and reboot.

----------------------------------

After you have done the above we need to fix this 01 Host VX2 Trojan so download L2mfix

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This scan takes time to complete, then notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it here

Please Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until told to.

My mother's computer is going extremely, extremely slow. I thought at first it was because there wasn't enough space on her hard drive and deleted 10 gigs of stuff off of it. I scanned for viruses and used Ad Aware. Nothing.

The screen will sometimes just start disappearing, everything disappearing from top to bottom. It freezes up frequently. My father just wants to delete everything and install a new OS. This is his response to everything and I feel like there should be another answer.

Thanks in advance.

A:Mother's computer very slow

Well first a disappearing monitor image sounds like a hardware problem, so it's possible not even a reinstall will fix that.

And, if it is a software issue, you could possibly spend weeks trying find & fix the problem and still wind up having to do a New Install. So Dad might be right.

There's a long list of basic information needed to start looking for causes of the freezing problem.

Post the specs of the Power Supply.
Run chkdsk and report results.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today. It is a good idea to print off these instructions:This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. A:helping fix mother's computer

Is it just the browser that is running slow, or the computer, in general?

FYI...

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Open a new HJT log and check the entry below to be fixed:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

Then, with all browser windows closed, click "fix checked".

Reboot and post a new log, along with any specifics that you notice about the system's behavior.

A:HJT Log inside - Mother's Computer :)

Not much showing in that log. Can you tell us what the issues are, please? Let's run some tools and do a checkup.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
*Note* For Ad-AwareSE also install the VX2 Addon Cleaner To run this tool once Adaware is updated click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK" , then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

Download Ewido Security SuiteInstall Ewido Security Suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:Delete Newsgroup cache
Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed) Click Scanner
Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option: "Perform action on all infections"
.Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):
