Preferred Solution: Windows Update: error 800736B3 with .NET 3.5.1 patch

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a computer that has been failing to install the IE cumulative updates. It is now also failing to install the bundled security updates (KB3192391 for example). I have tried the system readiness tool, clearing out the database, manually installing,
removing/re-adding IE from Windows features, and running SFC scan. I cannot find a solution for error 800736B3. Anyone know any other things I can do?
This is for a business computer. Would I qualify for free Microsoft support? If I do, how do I start that process?

Okay I currently have the CBS file compressing but here's the basic rundown of my problem: Updates fail to install and gives me error code 800736B3, no matter how I try to install them, one at a time, all at once, on shutdown, while computer is running, etc. It has continually asked me to run checkdisk when I turn it on and won't run unless I do, and when it does run, it deletes files that are Corrupted, I think? Has crashed my computer once this past week which made me begin to look into the issue

Edit- The file won't attach normally so I've uploaded it to a public Google drive.
Link for that is here. https://drive.google.com/folderview?...Tg&usp=sharing

A:Windows update Error 80243004 and 800736B3

What on earth did you use to split the Zip files? I've tried 3 different tools, and all tell me the files are corrupt.

Please just zip two/3 files together and upload them separately, then do another 2/3 files.

Hi,

This is my first post, and not all that clever with pcs, so apologies in advance if I've missed something out.

I have been getting this error code repeatedly when trying to install update KB2922229 for a couple of months now. Never had any problems before. Other updates were installing just fine, but I am now getting the same error code when trying to install update KB2871997. As both of these updates seem to be related to security, I am getting a bit concerned.

I have followed the steps in the Windows Update Posting Instructions, running SURT and an SFC scan. Logs attached.

Hope someone will be kind enough to help with this.

I have never seen such a CheckSUR summary before!

The SFC scan is clear - which in view of the above, is rather surprising.

Have you tried installing the updates again since running the CheckSUR/SURT?

If not, please do so, and let us know what happens - First do a check for Updates, and see if the updates appear at all - they may not.

Hello,

I seem to be running into a popular issue with Windows Update- 800736B3. WU is not completely broken, as it's still able to install updates to Security Essentials and non-system software (IE11, Office). All system updates, however, are failing. I've ran SURT and SFC scan, but both didn't report any outright errors. The logs should be attached to this post in the .zip

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium.
I am no longer getting any security updates because the update for Windows Update fails with Error Code 800736B3.

SFC /SCANNOW reports no errors.
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I have attached the CBS folder without the CbsPersist.cab files.

I have already tried the Microsoft KB How to update the Windows Update Agent to the latest version

I have lurked in this forum in the past - always finding answers. Thanks to all the experts contributing to this forum.

This time I joined so I could post, as I have been unable to find a solution to my problem.

I can install all updates except for SP1. I keep getting error 800736B3.

I ran the Update Troubleshooter, which claims to have repaired Win Update components - still same error.

I then successfully ran the hotfix KB947821. The same error occurs.

I ran sfc /scannow & no integrity violations were found.

I also tried again after a clean boot - same error.

I don't have a clue as to what to try now. Any suggestions?

Hello, I am having a small issue with Windows update. Windows 7 Home Premium, 64BIT OEM on HP Pavilion.

Window Update failing error code 800736B3

I have followed the SFC, update readiness, and clean boot procedures listed in the thread I linked above. I believe I have a SIMILAR issue (not the same).

Can anyone give me a light in the proper direction?

SFC found nothing, readiness tool ran and installed hotfix but did not fix issue. I also tried to install updates 1 at a time, to not avail, as well as the clean boot.

Based on my checksur log, I have the following:

Checking Package Watchlist
(f) CBS Watchlist Package Missing 0x80070002 Microsoft-Windows-Embedded-SKU-Foundation-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.0 Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.2.9200.16521 Package registry presence failed, possibly an orphaned package on package watchlist

But I am unsure where to go or how to continue at this point. Any sugegstions?

Hi,

I'm stuck with 43 waiting updates and the update error 800736B3.
Tried now several approaches from the forum to get it resolved, but no resolution of the issue until now.

sfc /scannow reports no issues.

So I ran the upgrade pack to produce to cbs log.

Maybe one could give me a hint how or if it could be resolved somehow.

Thanks in advance.

I would really appreciate any insight as to what you think may be causing the issue, reformatting would really set me back since this computer has some industry specific CAD programs that are a pain to setup.

thanks again,Mark

For some reason I cant post an attachment "attach button doesn't respond, in fact none of them do", I'll add a reply to the thread to see if I can then.

Update: Sorry about the missing attachments, I moved them out of the folder and forgot to attach, there are a couple of older CBS Persist files if you need them.

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

I am trying to assist a friend in repairing their windows update problems. I've made progress- but I have 5 Important updates that refuse to install...

IE11 - 9C59
KB2937610 - 800736B3
KB2972211 - 800736B3
KB3032323 - 800736B3
KB2791765 - 800736B3

the SURT was run- and got most of the updates to work other than the ones shown above.
sfc /scannow said all files were fine.

SURT has been run 4 or so times- it's not shown any repairs after the first run... as I would expect.

I've looked through the log files, but I am not really sure what I am looking for to indicate what the problem is.

I have attempted to attach the CBS.Zip file but I got a 404 error each time I clicked "Upload". This must be due to the size of the file. Here is a onedrive link to the zip file.

A:Windows Update: 800736B3 and 9C59

The upload is 8 times larger than the forum's 8MB size limit on Zip/RAR files - which is why it wouldn't upload here

This looks to me as if the install is actually stuck in a pending state, and you need to roll it back...

This is the command to run when booted offline at a Repair Environment command prompt

dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

This is supposed to revert all pended updates, and hopefully allow the system to start again - assuming it works, do another Check for Updates before attempting to install the updates again.

Windows 7 Fail to Update: Code 800736B3 - Getting error on update CBS

A:Windows 7 Fail to Update: Code 800736B3

The SFC log seems incomplete, please run SFC /SCANNOW again
Windows Update Posting Instructions

Step 4 asks you to copy the CBS folder to your desktop and put it in a zip folder.
Upload the zip folder when you post again.

If the zip folder is too big for the forum, upload just the CBS.log from the CBS folder copy on your Desktop.
Please add your SF Systems Specs by following this tutorial: System Info - See Your System SpecsIn the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field.
Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.
The tool does not fill in this information but it is very important if someone has to research drivers or hardware for your machine.
Log on to Sevenforums (SF) and let the tool fill in you System specs on your SF profile.

Full instructions are in the tutorial. It's a simple process and it makes that information readily available on your posts. You don't have to retype the information in any thread.

Click here to view your system specs on SevenForums.

Click on My System Specs in the lower left of any post by any member to see what is presented about their machine.

I joined the requested files,

Your SFC scan was clear - but the background CBS data shows some severe problems.
PLease run the CheckSUR tool, and post the results...

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

Hello Rob,

Lets run SURT to see if it gives an indication of a corruption:

Download and run System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
Please go Here and download the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Save this file to your desktop
Go to your desktop and run KB947821
When the SURT finishes installing, Please continue.
SFC /SCANNOW

Click on the button. Inside the search box type in CMD
Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Export CBS folder
Click the Start button then click Computer.
Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
Find and double click on the Logs folder.
Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next please post please upload via Dropbox or ge.tt

Have never had Avast free home interfere with anything, but you can disable it to try the Updates by right clicking it's icon in system tray and "turn off real time protection"

I note that another recent thread on this error found by Googling also remains unresolved.

If you bought your Win7 retail, you are entitled to MS excellent tech support which will work the case through to satisfaction. Those Updates are standard and can wait a few days.

It's not critical, but you could get rid of it by uninstalling KB3022345 and/or KB3068708 and hiding the latter when it reappers in your offered updates list.

A Windows Update patch just failed on a friend's Win7 SP1 system. I'm trying to help out.

This patch Tuesday, they had 10 important security updates. On their system, 9 of the 10 installed fine, but 1 of them failed during installation. It is listed as "Failed" in the list of updates.

Clearing the IE cache, rebooting, and checking for new updates does not show the update in the list of available updates within Windows Update.

Now what should I tell them to do?

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Came across this today, thought it might be helpfull!!
" If you have a Compaq or HP desktop system and have used Windows Update to odtain WinXP SP1, you have probably seen a special update for your system. The update is actually a help file that directs you to the Compaq-HP site to obtain a patch. The patch is small , but vital that you implement it. If you do not install the patch, the next time you use WinXP System Recovery utility, you could lose all data stored on the hard drive. Follow the directions provided with the Windows Update , print out the patch instructions you encounter along the way, and have a floppy ready and you should be able to download and install the update within 15 minutes"

I'm not too sure what to make of this because, when I went to Windows Update via Control Panel, nothing happened but when I used Firefox with the IE Tab addon, I was offerred an update to the update software but didn't see the screen referred to in the article linked to above?

I assume this is being distributed automatically to those with automatic updates enabled.

Thanks!

A:Windows 8 Pro Image with the Cumulative Update patch included?

What cumulative patch - did I miss something?

I haven't got win8 installed atm.

You can put the updates into your installation image easily enough - just pop the .msu files in with dism.

Win7 dism will do it fine.

Im getting this error code 800736B3. Can anyone help me.

A:error code 800736B3 installing SP1

Put the win7 disc in and choose upgrade then after that it will restart.

After you have acepted the upgrade it will allow you to install the sp1 .

Once win7 has upgraded ,but still keeping your system in tact ,will start the whole update process. After about a hour or two of updates it will install sp1 with no issue .

Also if you are useing a highend gaming card virus protect etc it might keep it from installing as well

Hello,
Do you know if the Windows Update client is able to download (and install) directly on Microsoft Web Site, considering an "authorized patch list" ?
The goal is not to use this items :
+ Windows Update client : automatic configuration.
+ WSUS server.
The interest is make a file including the autorized path, like critical or for security, after multiple tests on our infrastructure.
The computer where the Windows Update client is installed is not a LAN.
The computer is connected directly on a DSL network directly on Internet.
The second interest is that the download is directly with Microsoft, without using our LAN and infra ...

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010...lbar-update.ars As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does.

It all went downhill after that as the computer would no longer boot. I tried running the Start up Recovery to no avail. It said that it could not repair the problem.

Since I could not recover from the problems, I reinstalled Windows. I did not do a clean install, rather it moved my personal files from the old windows installation to a folder named Windowsold. The computer worked fine until I rebooted it after installing the video driver. Same problems as before - Start up Recovery could not resolve the issue. I started with a command prompt and noticed that the C drive was empty and Windows 7 was installed on the D drive. I don't understand how that happened because I did not tell Windows which drive letter to use during installation, nor does it even ask for that information.

I then did a clean install by deleting the two partitions (100MB system on partition 1 and the rest of my drive on partition 2). I installed the mother board drivers, video drivers, and purchased Norton 360 and Norton Utilities. I checked in Windows Explorer for the drive that Windows was installed on. It was installed on the C drive. The computer rebooted fine all day and I thought the problems were resolved once and for all.

Uh, not quite. I could not boot the computer this morning after Windows did an update at 3:00 am last night. I booted using Start up Recovery, opened a command window, and lo and behold, the C drive was empty and Windows was once again in the D drive.

Does anyone know what is causing this strange behavior? Norton scanned my drive and found no problems.

Thank you!

Wow, that is strange. Can you boot again and make a screen shot of the Disk Management and post here. That might be a good place to start.

A:Buggy Win XP update 821577 patch ??

Can I guide you to a reply given by Maurice N in reply to someone with similar symptoms

Security updates 821557 & 823980 ---- It *appears* that some pc's are having problems installing them or getting after-effects.
Do you have a software firewall? or none?
Do you have an antivirus program, and was it "active" at the time of the install?

For fix 821557 the pc must already have XP's Service Pack 1. Also note that for both fixes, you MUST restart Windows after the install completes.

The reason I asked on antivirus, is that these updates are updating a fairly impressive list of system DLL's. Hence, it may well be an antivirus could interfere with the update process.

Now then, here are links to the MS articles. You can see which system files are affected.
MS03-027: An Unchecked Buffer in the Windows Shell Could Permit Your System to Be Compromised
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=821557

MS03-026: Buffer Overrun in RPC Interface May Allow Code Execution
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823980

On fix 823980, it appears that a firewall ( even XP's built in firewall [if activated]) would likely protect the system without the fix.Click to expand...

Hello,

After last weeks updates my UAC keeps resetting after a few hours, i set it to Never Notify and after a while it goes back to normal.

Notes:

I'm running W8 Enterprise.
It was running normally before the update.
No 3rd party programs were installed, the OS remained unchanged, just the updates.

Is the problem known? Is there a solution?
Sorry if it was already posted in another thread.

A:UAC resets after last week's patch/update

Select a system restore point to before the updates were installed then install them one by one until you find the culprit. If it is a non essential update you may opt to Hide it.

I have the update and no problems yet. I used it on Win98 and 2000. Are you getting any problems with it, or are you just being cautious? If the latter, you're safe in installing it. Many have, I assume.

I need some major latest Microsoft Update Issue with Patch help with the latest Windows Issue with latest Microsoft Patch Update Update the set of patches that came out this Tuesday to help with the security issues I think it is causing issues for my laptop PC I m not computer illiterate but I mdefinitely nothing more than a beginner and this is starting to make me panic a little My laptop has been having major Startup and boot issues since the update My laptop freezes and goes to a white-grey screen The computer does start up - ie the screen comes on white screen unless I am lucky enough to get a boot screen for a moment the fans run but it takes several attempts at turning it on and off again and hitting either F or F still not sure which one is the one that works to get to a screen that allows me to repair the Startup and go back to a retore point The last time this happened it also beeped at me however I would not be able to tell you what the code sounded like I panicked somewhat However the restore point was made just after Windows downloaded the updates onto my comouter I had automatic updates on and I cannot shut down without my computer wanting to install the updates So I m stuck in an endless cycle of downloading these updates then being forced to restore Can anyone help with either finding a way to stop my laptop installing these updates or does anyone know a way to troubleshoot the updates themselves Specs Dell Studio Windows Version - Home Uses Internet MS Office Some digital artwork very minimal Age Barely months old Virus Defrag scan Clear on both counts Thanks I m not great with computers at all and this is starting to worry me nbsp

Security download KB929969 (support.microsoft.com) will not install on my PC because it is "not a valid Win32 application." My access to the internet is via Ethernet 10/100 NIC card and cable connection.

Also, the yellow icon for "Windows is dowloading updates" shows up in my task bar, but nothing happens. I have performed disk cleanup/defrag, but to no avail. I am using a very good ISS provided by my ISP, therefore, not needing the Windows firewall. No probls with viruses, etc. I reviewed my update history on the Windows Update site and show no updates since Feb. 2008 (with the exception of the above-mentioned security patch).

My computer skills are between that of "beginner" and "intermediate" (depending on how much of a senior-day I'm having).

I thank anyone who reads this for their time, consideration and assistance.

Peace Out.

If you are using Norton SystemWorks 2005(the retail CD version and not the downloadable version), there is an update patch for it that updates it to 8.03.

You can read about and download the update patch from here and here.

When I installed Windows Update 821557, I lost function of my right click drop down menus, couldn't rename files or folders and several other bugs.
System would lock and had to force quit what ever was involved. I uninstalled the patch and everything returned to normal. To play it safe, I restored my Win XP SP1 (home edition) to a previous state (before patch). I'm afraid to install this patch again and have been trying to gather info on this buggy patch. Anyone else having problems with this patch ?? I'd like to know-----Thanks !!
