Battery Life Time Remaining

Q: Battery Life Time Remaining

I have a HP Pavilion laptop and when I hover over the battery icon it tells me the percentage of battery left but I was wondering if their was a way to get it to show me how much time I have left? I have seen other pc's with Windows 7 have this and I was wondering if mine can do this also. Thanks

Preferred Solution: Battery Life Time Remaining

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently picked up a Spectre to test drive for a couple weeks Overall I like it a lot but there are a couple unpolished elements that bother me nbsp especially that Calculating is always displayed instead of a time remaining estimate nbsp A little bit after getting nbsp home from the store I flipped the screen into tablet mode and it caused unrecoverable screen tearing until force reboot Next day I updated Windows to latest build hoping it'd solve the display driver issue so far so good fingers crossed But after the update it seems to be stuck Calculating if - Battery time remaining calculating life perpetually that is indeed what it's doing nbsp Some other posts on this forum seem to suggest that nbsp HP removed the feature Can I expect this to be patched in the future or is there a workaround Not looking for a nbsp third nbsp party Battery life - time remaining perpetually calculating application as others have said even just disappearing the Calculating would begrudingly satisfy me nbsp I guess it's really an aesthetic gripe yet it will never stop bothering me Between this and Battery life - time remaining perpetually calculating the screen tearing I'm on the fence whether to keep the device or return it and wait for a skylate macbook pro nbsp If anyone could elucidate me to a known workaround or confirmation from HP that this will be fixed I would greatly appreciate it

Hi @mr_meeseeks, Welcome to the HP Forum!I am pleased that you have become a HP Forum member.  It is such a wonderful site to find answers and tips. Here is a link to the First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More for you to have the most rewarding experience and answer any concerns about posting. I understand that after updating your Windows 10 the battery charge icon is always calculating. As this occurred after a Windows update, I would try doing a sfc scan to find and attempt repairing any corrupted system files.Right click on the Windows button lower left corner and choose command prompt adminType sfc /scannow and press enterWait for it to complete and restart your notebook If the issue remains, here is a link to  HP Notebook PCs - Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 10). If it still shows calculating it could be the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, which  is basically the driver that communicates between the computer and the battery. There is a chance that it has become  corrupted and is unable to read the battery level. Therefore the computer is unable to determine the battery's charge. Step 1. Go to Device Manager.Step 2. Select Batteries.Step 3. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.Step 4. Click Uninstall.Step 5. At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver.Step 6. Shutdown the computer.Step 7: Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in.When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.Step 8. Go to Device Manager.Step 9. Select Batteries.Step 10. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.Step 11. Click "Search automatically for updated driver software". Please let me know the results. Thanks for participating in the HP Forums where we want to help you as well as others who may experience a similar issue as yourself. Hi, When I first got my laptop, I would click on the battary icon in the tray and it would give me a time remaining estimate as well as the percentage.  I have since had to reinstall windows 8.1 and no longer have the battery time remaining estimate, just the percentage.  I have installed all the latest drivers from the support site and everything works fine except for that. I have tried every version of the BIOS available on the support site and reinstalled serveral times.  I also tried running a battery check which came back fine.  Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks.

A:No Battery Time Remaining when clicking on battery icon in T...

Hello tm200 The Battery Time Remaining information has been removed from BIOS F.11. The battery time estimator basically looking at what you?re doing right now and give an estimated remaining time. It was common for the readout to go from 8 hours to 16 hours in a matter of minutes. This might cause more customer confusion than it would solve. The trend of mobile devices intended last for whole day is try not to estimate their battery life. For example, iPhones, iPads, Android phones, tablets, etc. all don?t try to estimate. They might give insight into your past usage, but they won?t try to project the future.  ThanksWayne

I have spent several hours troubleshooting this error of the remaining battery duration continuously calculating then I discover on this forum that it's intended as a feature I nbsp I've tried all the steps proposed but apparently I wasted my time if it's an intended feature Apparently someone made the decision at HP to hack in the BIOS this normal ability of the OS to calculate remaining battery time http h www hp com t Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions No-Battery-Time-Remaining-when- nbsp We know it's only an estimate and varies according to use but to deliberately interfere with a useful feature offered by MS in their OS is stooping low to say the least If the claim is wrong then please be transparent with us nbsp Wow come on HP don't waste our valuable time put this feature back how it was intended to be and available on other laptops I've just switched from using Dell for more than a decade and I am not impressed with the integrity of HP of doing this kind of thing especially since i guess you had people complaining about the stated battery life of the Spectree X well tough you need to deal with the reality that it achieves only one third to one half of its claimed battery life rather than hiding from customers the remaining battery time nbsp nbsp C'mon HP show a long-time Dell customer that you care as much as Dell care nbsp

I have gone thru three 4195dx spectre 360's and several systems at Best Buy. The systems with the latest BIOS have this issue and its NOT RESOLVED. I have opened an escalation with HP and have an escalation manager working it but it has become a DEAD END. Their was a F level BIOS that came out the other day but it was for audio and audio volume issues? I was so hoping HP would fix this. The demo units at Best Bye do not have this issue and show only percent remainging BUT THEY ARE AT BIOS Level A..the first BIOS...so yes indeed HP has done something in the BIOS to CLOUD the iusse. Possibly by MISTAKE or to hide the crappy battery life of their awesome new HALO co-designed with microsoft product. Its more annoying that anything but show a LACK of detail, possibly HONESTY from HP that has just split into two companies. Some people are listening at HP but NOT THE RIGHT ONES or they are IGNORING this issue to save FACE. Remove the calculating HP.... Alex

Charging the Lumia 640 XL LTE.
After receiving my Lumia a month ago, I updated to Windows 10 v1607.
1) The Lumia 640 XL comes with a 750mA charger.
I want to make use of 2 other chargers. All 3 chargers have 5V output.
Will using a Nokia 1.2A charger or a Blackberry Playbook 1.8A charger harm the Lumia 640 XL battery?
2) Initially the Lumia 640 XL showed, after charging to 100%, a remaining time of 40 hours and discharge rate of 2.5%.
I then downloaded a couple of battery apps.
I usually charge the battery overnight to 100%.
After some use today, both apps now show 76% with 55 hours remaining and a discharge rate of 1.32%.
I can't believe the Lumia battery has become that efficient.
I plan on removing the 2 Apps to see if they are responsible for these divergent numbers.

2) remaining time is always a statistic istant-on extimation. Obviously, istant battery use changes second after second, so don't believe to anyone of these prediction, use a long term statistic battery check instead (even if I don't trust so much in these apps, MS limited battery check to once every 15 mins to 3rd part apps )

Hi there,

Anybody any idea about how long the 1812 LiOn battery of a HP R707 camera should last ?
What are the indications for such a battery to become 'end of live' ?

Yesterday , the battery apparently wouldn't load beyond 3.4 volt.
The camera stayed 'dead' ofcourse.
A second load-attempt gave me 4.3 volts.
And now the camera appears to be function as usual.

The R707 is about 2 years , I took about 4000 pictures up till now.

You can try running an sfc scan to fix corrupted system files.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Or you could try alternative battery meters. E.g. theres one made by a forum member (Bagaria).

A:best battery to give longest battery life?

Assuming that they are all designed to fit your laptop, you need to look at the ratings. Basically, you want the one with the greatest Ah (amp?re-hour) as that should last longest. Although this usually means the battery with the most cells, it doesn't always follow. Check their specifications.

I'm on ADSL, and the provider automatically renews the IP every 4 days. Under Win XP, I simply had to click on the network icon in taskbar (lower right corner) and the window showed me since how long I had been connected (and thus if there was a risk of getting disconnected soon or not).

How can I easily get to the same info under Win7 ? (Win7 Ultimate x64)

A:How to know the time remaining before Windows turns into hibernation?

Hello lucekius and welcome to Seven Forums.

I guess you're looking for some kind of countdown timer that would show how much time remains before hibernation. I think you'd have to look for some third party tools because I don't believe Windows 7 has that kind of countdown timer.

You can change hibernation settings through the Power Plan Settings.

A:!!!CCleaner Wipe MFT Time Remaining Increasing-NOT Decreasing!!!

I always experience the same issue. It could be down to installing some sort of process tamer but on my machine for some reason if I install Java then it works as expected. Without Java - the problem returns.

I've never been able to find anything on the Ccleaner website that mentions that Java is required!

Personally for MFT wipe I use Sdelete:

I run it a using Run Command shortcut in right click context menu:

Replace the C: at the end of the command if you want to clean a different drive.

I have my old Windows 95 computer sitting upstairs unplugged. If the battery goes dead, will it be useless or when I put another battery in after it is dead, will it come back to life. Don't want to keep in plugged in if no one is going to use it.

hello jdemnyan1116

if the motherboard battery does go dead, when you boot it up you'll probably get a "CMOS Checksum " error....

meaning all the settings in the BIOS setup area are at default including the time/date.......you'll have to rest it

you may want to keep a record of that stuff, or sell it for a couple bucks *-)
You'll probably have to rest it should have read <B>reset</B>

I am deeply disappointed in the battery life - I have complained and although HP upgraded my complaint the man I spoke to could not tell me what I should expect from the battery.  In fact was no hlep at all.    I have just spent 1,000 on this computer and I cannot take it to meetings without a charger - this is appalling - I see others have had this problem - has anyone been given a solution or even an improved battery?

A:BATTERY life

We do get quite a few complaints about the x360 battery life. What kind of runtime are you seeing? Are you trying to follow a plan to extend battery runtime? The biggest single thing is screen brightness. Also, since we are a User to User Forum we have no way to know what HP is doing in response to specific complaints. I do know there is no other battery available except the factory part.

Hi, i have a few questions about battery life, i would like to maintain my battery life to last as long as possible. It was never brilliant but a can get about 2 hours out of it. One thing that i though was perhaps a problem from stuff i heard is that it is not good for it to leave it charging when its fully charged because of the way its managed it keeps putting little bits of charge in, is that true with win 7. Because i like to paly games with the laptop plugged in for performance so its annoying about charging it. There also the whole thing about letting it run flat then fully charge it. Just any tips on what you do and whether the above is acutally true would be appreciated, thanks

A:Battery Life

Hi wizkid, Vista is more resource demanding, more heat is generated which causing the fan running in full blast often. Also, there always process working on the back ground such as indexing or defrag as such. So, I guess there is not much you can do about it.

Hi everyone!

I couldn't find a discussion on battery life in Windows 7, so I decided to create a thread.

I recently installed Windows 7 Build 6956 on my laptop to try it for some time. I'm liking it so far. Using the Balanced power option in 7 I'm getting maybe 20 minutes longer battery life compared to using the Power Saver option in Vista. I'm guessing this is a good improvement since Balanced still allows full performance when needed and Vista cuts performance. I haven't tried Power Saver in 7 yet, but I guess it might give me a little extra time.

Has anyone else timed their battery life?

PS: I also noticed a difference in wake up time from sleep when I open the laptop lid. Windows 7 takes just a second to wake up and Vista takes about 4-5 seconds. Has anyone else noticed this difference?

Hey hethoofd,

I havent got around to running 7 on battery yet, but yes I am suitably impressed by Startup, wakeup, from both sleep and hibernate and reboot times.

The power saving that I have seen so far seems also pretty impressive. I am mainly surfing the forums not the best of tests but it does allow me to see how 7 switches down during periods of inactivity.

A:Y40 - Battery life only last 30 min

In response to customer reports of unexpected battery gauge behavior on Y40-70 and Y40-80 laptops, Lenovo determined the battery gauge software is performing as expected. The unusual gauge results being reported are a reflection of the battery reaching end of life.

Lenovo has released a Service TIP to assist customers with obtaining battery replacements under warranty, or if out of warranty, to find a replacement battery from Lenovo-approved vendors. The Service TIP can be found here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/sf16-I0023

The part numbers for Y40-70/80 batteries are:
Y40 SP/A L13M4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500248
Y40 LG L13L4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500249 substitute part 121500251
Y40 CP/C L13C4P01 7.4V48Wh 4cell bty (Y40-70/Y40-80) 121500259 substitute part 121500251

To determine which battery came with your Y40 notebook, instructions for removing the bottom cover can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual pdf here. An alternative to opening your system (which does not void warranty) is to search for batteries using the model/product number located on the bottom cover.

Hi, I have a notebook Envy m6-w105dx and it is mostly used at home. Because of that, it is always connected to the power. Since I am not able to take the battery off, I was wondering if being connected to the power all the time could damage the battery or to decrease its average life. If I am damaging the battery, what would it be the solution for that problem?

Solved!
View Solution.

A:m6-w105dx Battery life

This is a common question. Being connected to power all the time is not damaging the battery, but it may result in slightly less life. The battery has an electronic chip inside that counts cycles and if you turn it off let it sit for a couple days and then turn the computer back on it may have to charge the battery back up from below 95% and it will read that as a cycle and the battery is set to stop working after a certain number of cycles to keep it from being a power hazard. Old lithium ion batteries can become a hazard if they have too many charge/discharge cycles on them so batteries are actually pre-programmed to stop working before they are really chemically dead.  The battery cannot overcharge, however, so having it connected to power all the time is not a bad thing as far as that goes. The cycles can only happen if you have it on power and turn it off and leave it off and have power to the AC adapter off for a couple days or more. Even if you remove and store the battery it will lose capacity just from sitting around in storage, so there is really no perfect answer to laptop battery life.  So basically, for most people, the battery is a "use it and forget it" thing. Don't let it drive your life, just leave it in place and use the laptop as you want. The only thing you should avoid is discharging the battery below about 15-20%. They do not like that very much. There is no memory effect any more so you can use it on battery, run it down to say 70% then charge it up. No problem with that.  You have to assume that you will need a new battery at some point if you keep the laptop more than about 2 years.  Post back with any more questions.

My current power plan is a slightly modified turbo battery plan that extends the length until the computer hibernates. so far i have the setting on power saver mode and bring down the brightness to a little more than the lowest setting. anything else i can do or adjust. thanks

A:The BIG lie about the battery life of S210

Completely agree. I thought that this was because I had the i3 version (which is hardly marketed), and that the Celeron versions had better battery life, but a couple of colleagues bought the Celeron versions of the S210T and the battery lasts about 1.5 hours on normal usage, and the marketed time is supposed to be 5-6 hours.  o_O Also agree with the statement above that the battery drains even when the laptop is off, and also that it hardly has any stand by time when on sleep, which is super surprising even for a low end Lenovo. And nowhere on the internet nor on Lenovo support sites can I find a replacement 4 or 6 cell battery for this model. Looks like I'm stuck with the crappy 3 cell one that comes with it forever.

Thank you for your message.
A battery is made of different cells. One cell will approximately give you about 20-30 minutes of back up based on the usage.  A 6 cell battery will give you about 120 minutes of back up on a normal usage.
We would recommend you to charge battery completely & use the computer just on battery power until the power drains down to 10-15 %.  Charge the battery again, try this at least 2-3 times a week. This will improve the battery life & have a good charge & discharge cycle & improve the battery life.
We do not recommend using any 3rd party application to improve the battery life.
Please open control panel-power options- change plan settings ? change advanced power options ? scroll down & change the lid close option according to your need (You can chose to put the computer to sleep, shutdown or do nothing when you close the lid)
We wouldn?t recommend you going back to Windows 7 as that will void the software warranty. Windows 10 is pretty stable now & all the issues reported have been fixed.

Hi all,

So i got my laptop battery replaced since the last one died up on me and fortunately laptop was under warranty so DELL was kind enough to send me a free replacement battery.

Now then maybe i was not following proper charging procedure/or overcharging my battery.

So the question arises how to maximize the battery life and whats the proper procedure of battery charging??

Yes i know there are tons of claims and counter claims regarding the "perfect" charging steps and guides. To all experts here, just wanted your comments on the same.

I will be highly obliged. Thanks you

PS:Forgot to mention laptop is only 11 months old

A:How to maximizing battery life??

At home when I leave the laptop plugged in, I take the battery out.

I'm not exactly sure how Windows based laptops work compared to Apple laptops because I have a MacBook Pro approximately 5 years old now and the battery is still going strong. I can't say the same for many of the Windows based laptops I've had, many of the batteries start to degrade rapidly after a year of use.

I have a Acer Aspire V5 laptop. When I was running Win 8.1, the battery life wasn't great, but lasted about 2 1/2 - 3 hours.
Now that I upgraded to Windows 10, the last time I turned it on the battery meter said 52 %. Two minutes later, it was dead.
I just turned it on after charging it, and the meter read 98%, 1 hr 50 min remaining. I haven't touched it yet, and five minutes later the battery's down to 90 %, although it says that there's 3 hr 5 min remaining. When I do any work on it, the battery goes down drastically. Does this have anything to do with Windows 10?

Not sure if this is the place to put this question. But for my laptop battery, it doesnt last long then 15 mins until windows tells me that i got 10 minutes left in my batteries.

So my question is that is there any programs for windows that can help me recharge my batteries? or is my battery dead and need to buy a new one now?

Anything will help! Thanks in advance!

Hi i recently bought a lenovo z51, but i am disapointed in the battery life, i have taken the laptop apart and can see that there is loads of space which is not being used. I google for a new battery and found this option, so my question is this, would it fit my laptop and if so would it bring about much more battery life?  http://www.chargers-pc.co.uk/lenovo-laptop-batteries-c-52_11/original-laptop-battery-lenovo-z5170-48... this is the one that is currently in the laptop:http://www.chargers-pc.co.uk/lenovo-laptop-batteries-c-52_11/laptop-battery-lenovo-z41-z51-z4170-z41... I only get around 2 hours usage, which is unacceptable, and you can see why as the battery is about the same size as most tablets which is rediculous ThanksGeorge

Turn your wireless off!
Switch your power plan to "Power Saver"
take a spare battery just in case
don't plug anything USB into it or it will draw power from the laptop. and don't use it unnecessarily

A:How to prolong your battery's life

Where did you get this information? Some of it I'd agree with, others I don't. It also reads like a post you copy pasted into lots of places around the internet - however a quick googling didn't return anything.

1.Store battery :
Put your batteries in a cool and dry place when you store it.
Yes, that is generally good practice for lots of things.

Do not charge your lithum batteries too full before storage.
Ok, no prob here either, although saying that doing so can decrease overall capacity of the battery would have made it a better statement.

After using the laptop battery ,please clean up the metal terminals with a soft dry clean cloth.
So, I should take the battery out of my laptop every time I've used the laptop while not plugged in. This is not practical on some laptops and ultrabooks, nor does it seem necessary since I have never seen a corroded laptop battery.

Before storage, you should confirm your is not fully depleted. If empty, charge for about 30 minutes . Usually a lithium-ion battery should be stored at about 40% state-of-charge.
I've seen 50% thrown around, but I'll accept 40%.

The suitable storage temperature for batteries is around 15C
Ok. Haven't heard this, but I suppose it makes sense.

Please notice this: weak batteries charge faster and remain on 'ready' indicator longer than strong ones. Also it only be used for a short time.So do not buy a used battery even if it is very cheap because used battery usually means weak battery.
This is confusing. Should define "weak". What does "remain on 'ready' indicator longer than strong ones" mean? Why would this happen? There are programs like BatteryCare for Windows and Coconut Battery for OS X that you could use to get information on a used battery before purchasing. Its possible with those tools to make an informed decision on whether or not the battery is worth the price. Simply dismissing the possibility of purchasing a used battery is lazy.

2.Charge battery :
Most battery can be fully charged in about 3 hours so do not leave a battery in a charger for a long time.
Are we still talking about laptop lithium batteries? They are intelligently charged based on circuitry in the battery pack to charge without overcharging, leaving in longer will not damage. A majority of battery chargers for NiCD, NiMH, and NiZn sold in the last 5+ years are also smart chargers and would stop charging once they sense a (typically) 0.01V decrease. Basically overcharging isn't a problem today.

When you prepare to charge your battery ,make sure the temperature is around the room temperature.
Makes sense.

Especially need to pay attention is avoid over-charging and over-discharging.
See above.

Do not charged to higher voltages than its threshold voltage ,as it would become unsafe.
As I said above, things are charged on smart chargers now, this isn't going to happen. It seems that starting with your #2 section you are mixing up laptop batteries and regular rechargable batteries like you use in a flashlight.

Prepare a new battery for replacement if your battery get weak over time.
Ok. Or you could just continue to use it, laptop batteries are expensive. If someone needed to get 5+ hours and now they can't, then of course they'll buy a replacement, don't think they need to be told to do so.

Please notice this: It is not very distinct to reduce the charge time by increasing the charge current .
What? Again, possibly talking about other types of batteries than lithium laptop batteries, but even at that I think you used a wrong word or two.

3.Maintain battery :
Rechargeable batteries do not break suddenly but slowly get powerless over time.
All? NiZn batteries have been known to "break" suddenly and not be able to be recharged. Lead Acid batteries in cars often start a car just fine, then the next attempt at... Read more

Hi!

Im trying to figure out how to make my laptop LiIon battery last longer. Ive been searching the internet, but the information is very varied. Some say its best NOT to discharge the battery completely, others say I should use the 40%-80% range, and again others say I should charge and discharge the battery completely on regular basis. Why are there so many different suggestions?

A:Laptop battery life

What you really ought to consider is a multi-cell battery for a laptop.
Some are only three cell, others are four or six sells. When I switched to a 9-cell battery for My Thinkpad T-60, my world changed for the better.
As for your question, most actual tests show it is best to totally discharge the battery periodically, then recharge it. Otherwise you run into problems of battery "memory" where it has a difficult time creating a full charge after a period of partial charges.

My last laptop battery life span wasn't long and it was only months before it wouldn't last longer than 15 min unplugged. I'm unsure if letting it stay on battery, or leaving it plugged in charging for many hours hurts or helps my total life span of my battery. I would like to hopefully have my battery life span lasts a long time so I don't have to purchase those nice inflated $200 replacement batteries from HP. Any tips are appreciated, thanks.

I know this is an advertised benefit of Windows 7, but now I can testify first-hand to the better battery life. I bought a laptop with Vista on it, and upgraded it to 7 today. I charged the battery before installing, and unplugged it soon after it started installing.

I haven't plugged it in yet. I have been using it for about 2.5 hours now, and the battery is at 73%.

Granted, it is a very good battery, but if this had been Vista, it would be at about 20% by now.

Windows 7 is a great OS, isn't it?

A:Windows 7 and battery life

Hi Jonathan,

I think most Members would agree that Windows 7 wins hands down over Vista. I think that it is true that Vista should have never been marketed, in so many ways it was not ready. Windows 7, is basically Vista under the hood with additional features and benefits that should have been claimed by Vista. Your battery experience, for one, security, aero, driver availablity to mention just a few. Enjoy your new computer, Jonathan, and keep busy on the keyboard, helping us at the Forum.

I was wondering if I could get an answer about the battery life on the Dell XPS nbsp The specifications state up to hours of battery life on it I HIGHLY doubt that s realistic under normal circumstances especially with the i I hear the i model only gets up to hours of battery life Is that right I mean realistically with the TDP there s no way you could get on an i What about the battery on the i model It surely doesn t get hours either does it And am I correct to believe the i doesn t allow switchable graphics They advertise it as having nVidia Optimus technology but from what I can tell the i don t support switchable graphics Yet I ve heard some XPS life? Dell 15 Battery reports of Dell technicians claiming that the i models did support Optimus so I m a little confused nbsp If someone could please tell me what kind of battery Dell XPS 15 Battery life? life I could get on it with the -cell I would appreciate it I m thinking to buy an XPS but if the specifications aren t what they re claiming to be I don t want to buy it find out it was false advertising and ship it back effectively wasting my time

A:Dell XPS 15 Battery life?

No the XPS 15 will NOT get 9 hours with either of the i7 core cpu's. You are correct that the i7 does not support n-vidia optimus switching graphics. You can look at Intel's website and neither the i7 740QM nor the i7 840QM have the graphic chips built into them. I think there are some dual core i7's not availible in the XPS 15 that support optimus but the two i7 quad core options for the new XPS 14,15 or 17 do not support optimus. I don't know a battery life estimate for the 15. Mine hasn't come yet.

A:Battery Life Problem!

Batteries wear out. If it won't accept a charge, then that's what's going to happen.
New batteries are expensive so I recommend using the battery only when it's needed.

I take the battery out of the laptop once it's fully charged, and then (when I use it), I use it until it's discharged. Only then do I charge it up again. Most people will say it isn't necessary with newer batteries/charging systems - but I like the way that I did it in the old days and will keep on doing that way.

- running W10
- HDD replaced by SSD
- shutdown / battery saving features enabled like shutoff screen, turn off HDD after 5 mins
- typically running only on 60% brightness
- AV-programm with small footprint ( just NOD32 AV)
- no background active apps except mail
- 99% just browsing and mailing ( once in a while some youtube videos or lifestream)

I'm new to the boards. Apologies if this is a tired topic, but I would appreciate feedback. I'm about to buy my first laptop, and am finding out that the one I'm trying out, a low-priced model (Toshiba Satelite M30X/M35X Series), lasts only about an hour and a half before needing to be recharged (if playing a dvd, it lasts only about an hour). Somehow I had guessed that batteries lasted longer in laptops. Am I nuts?
Two questions:

1. What is the normal life for a laptop battery?

2. And if I want to stay in the relatively low-price arena, what are the best laptops to consider in terms of battery life?

Thanks.

1. I'd say between 45 minutes and 3+ hours. My Thinkpad lasts on average 2 1/2 - 3 hours doing office work.

2. Depends if you think Thinkpad is in the relatively low-price arena.
