Configuring ADSL modem in bridge mode

Q: Configuring ADSL modem in bridge mode

Hi guys,

I have an ADSL TP-Link modem model TD-8817 version 6. I want to configure it in bridge mode. The only thing I know about that is my VPI is 0 and the VCI is 35. Does anyone know how to do that step-by-step please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Now I once again have a new question.
Can I limit the different network ports (1-4) ul/dl speed on my modem? -so that for ex ports 1-3 has "full speed" and port 4 is limited to max 100kB/s dl and 20kB/s ul.
I have a TeleWell TW-EA501 and here is the manual for it but I just don't get it (in English on page 14)

thx in advance!

I have two D-link 2640U ADSL modem with two ADSL lines and they are conneccted to a dual WAN router?

what is best setting for the WAN of dual WAN router: PPPoE client , DHCP client or static IP? (all these are options)

if PPPoE client is better, how to bridge D-link 2640U ADSL modem so PPPoE information is entered in the dual WAN router instead of the modem?

I have ADSL modem which is also router router that is connected to WAN of a router.

what is better of the two options:

1-Use the modem in router mode:

modem WAN: from ISP (enter ADSL usernamer and password)
modem LAN

router WAN (static IP):
router LAN:

2- Use the modem in bridge mode

router WAN (PPoE client): from ISP (enter ADSL username and password)
router LAN:

which of the two method is better and make internet faster?

I am now using the first method because if the router is damaged. I can connect to the modem directly and use the internet until I buy a new router but in the second method, I need to change the modem back to router mode and then back to bridge mode when I buy the new router.

A:what is the benifit of adsl bridge mode?

Bridge mode is used to connect 2 different networks
on different subnets together.
If you are not trying to bridge 2 networks together,
just use router mode.

I have a Linksys wrt1900ac (router only) and have been using my old Netgear dg384 in bridge mode successfully until yesterday when it lost power.
The 2 options I was thinking about replacing the Netgear with are: Billion 7800nxl or Linksys X1000
Will any basic modem/router do?
Any suggestions? I only need it for bridge mode.....some other details: live in Australia, using ADSL2, national fibre optic access coming soon, looking for something cost friendly under $150,
Any help appreciated

If you only expect to use the modem/router in bridge mode (acting as modem only) why not just get a modem instead of a modem/router? (I don't have any suggestions for either, as I only have experience with cable service.)

I am currently using a 2Wire 2701hg-b gateway to connect to my AT&T ADSL.

My plan is to put a Netgear Nighthawk R8000 behind the current "Gateway".

Because bridging the 2701 is essentially turning it into just a Modem - should I get a better Modem instead.
The 2Wire 2701 is almost 8 years old. (Surprisingly, I have never had a problem wired or wireless)

I have my main computer with the following setup

Windows Vista connected to the router then to the modem in Bridge Mode (so that I can use NAT1 with my PS3), thus internet works fine for both, my Main Comp (Desktop) using PPPoe and PS3 using a wireless connection between my router but also through PPPoe.

However, in terms of my secondary computer (Desktop), I have a USB Wireless Adapter, but I do not seem to be able to find the configuration for going on to the internet through the router but to use PPPoe.

The following are my products

Router - D-Link DIR-625

can we see a ipconfig /all when connected just to the modem please

ipconfig /all

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the information above those entries

For Windows 8
To open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop.
Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.
For windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

Now type CMD

Now press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt
It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

A:Problem networking via Belkin ADSL Modem with High Speed Mode Wirelss G Router

USUALLY, you wire the system to the router first and configure the router
to access your ISP. Typically, you use your bowser to access and log-in to the device.
Once that is working, you enable the wireless feature, set the SSID and your security keys.
Now your ready to configure the desktop to use the wireless.

I've currently got a 512kb/s adsl connection but will be moving to a faster 1mb/s connection in next 2 months. In meantime I need to get my other PC to share same connection. So must be wireless. As I understand it a 4 port wireless adsl router means that basically you have an adsl modem that not only controls upload/download link to the internet but lets u plug in 4 PC's hardwired into modem? and then as well as that connect wirelessly?

I'm only looking to connect two PC's to hardwired in and the other wireless equipped with a USB wireless stick.

Would this be suitable?

A:Sharing internet using ADSL. Which router/adsl modem to buy?

I suppose this is what your ISP is trying to sell you..

It will probably work, but I would recommend a product from a brand manufacturer who will actually release patches and support you after two years.

Look for similar products from Linksys, 3Com, SMC, D-Link, Netgear

Is this true? While my Zyxel 660 DSL modem is set to "Bridge Mode":

a.) should I still be able to access it's administration page (via as before?

b.) with it in "bridge mode" is it able to cause me problems with respect to me forwarding ports?

Ultimate goal: trying to ftp my ftp home server on port 1234. As you can see here
I have successfully forwarded ports already, but I'm having problems adding this other one.

I have:
1.) opened the port on my ftp server's firewall
2.) forwarded both internal and external ports on my router
3.) when testing it with the open ports tool at
I get a "timed out" error.

Any ideas?

Hi. I'm looking for an easy to follow guide to do the following.

I have an SMCD3GN (from Rogers) that is both a Modem and a Router. I also have a Linksys WRT54G router that I used to use before.

The SMC is giving me a lot of problems. The connection is really bad often and my internet speed drops for no reason all of a sudden. I'm getting fed up and want my old router back.

I know it's possible to change the SMC into a modem (put it in bridge mode) and then connect my router and use the Linksys router instead of the SMC. The problem is, I don't know exactly how to set it up and would really like an explanation.

I already know how to get into the SMC and Linksys settings as an admin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:How do I put my Router/Modem in Bridge Mode and Use a Different Router?

Nothing about bridging in the SMCD3GN User Manual.

Found two articles that may help you.

Apparently the SMCD3GN has two levels of programming, a user level name/password and then an administrative name/password.

This is probably a better discription of how to do it.

This second article is cited in the first and contains both name/password sets.
Be sure to have the router connected to the modem and the modem's wireless turned off before implimenting the bridging.
According to the articles you lose your ability to access the modem's User Interface unless you do a factory reset which kills the bridge.

I'm kind of new at this networking stuff. I currently have a DSL Netopia modem model No. 2241N with a regular Linksys broadband router. Everything is running well with this setup. I recently got a Linksys wireless router Model no. WRT54G, by the way I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.

I set it up with all the correct wires in place and it tells me that it cannot connect to the internet. I've been asking a lot of questions and it seem that most of the answers are telling me I need to bridge my DLS modem. If this is the case how do I go about doing that and do I need to tell it to turn of DCHP?

Do I need to do this with the internet running with the old setup, then shut it down and install the new wireless modem and follow the directions from there?

A:How to set "Bridge Mode" on modem

Pages 108-110 of the user manual seem to contain the instructions. Depending on your ISP and how this modem/router works you may then have to configure the WAN (Internet) section of the Linksys router for PPPoE or account/password, etc. Make sure you have a pretty good understanding of those pages before proceeding.

A second option, not very good, but it works: change the LAN subnet used by the Linksys router, say to 192.168.3.x. This will give you cascaded routers, as you are now using.

A third option is to use the new Linksys unit as an ethernet switch and wireless access point, as follows.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the "routers" is a computer.] Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Often these consumer adsl routers do not enable you to use bridge or wifi extender /adapter mode
The seimens does not work with an open DD-WRT firmware

What about the other way around
connect the seimens up to the ADSL line
now with the TP-LINK
Whats the exact model of that, perhaps that will allow wifi extender

The "nokia siemens SL2_141" is a modem/wireless router combo; I assume that "A Wireless Modem of MTS" is also a modem/wireless router combo.

If my assumption is correct you can use the Nokia as an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

A:Help Configuring ADSL Router / Gigabyte W-less and Zone Alarm Security Suite 2006

Okay here goes. First off do you have windows firewall on? If so then you need to turn it off because you are using Zone Alarm. I am not familiar with Zone Alarm but it should be pretty much this way. To open a port for playing games you have to use port forwarding on the router. Make sure you pick a port that is not used by other services. Here is a link to the ports to use.
Pick one that is unassigned. You may also have to set this in the game and in Zone Alarm.
Static Addresses are manually assigned to the pc. If you are not using Static then you are using DHCP and the router automaticly gives you the IP address, subnet mask address, default gateway address, and the DNS addresses. If there is only two of you I would go with Static. Your Default Gateway is the IP Address of your router. It is normally Then you would assign yourself an address of, and your friend Your Subnet Mask should be and DNS Addresses you have to get from your ISP or you can look in the router config page and see what they are.
If you have any question please fill free to ask. I hope this helps some what. No need to apologize for not knowing how to do this. Welcome to the networking world.

I'm planning on getting ADSL soon and I'm trying to work out what sort of ADSL modem would be ok. I want to use two computers with the modem but the phone jack is about 6 metres away from the computer.

Would a wireless ADSL router allow me to have two computers access the internet at the same time? Do I need anything special to have my computer work with a wireless unit like the one here Would using something like this mean I don't have to have a cable running from the phone jack to my computer (like I do now lol)?

My computer has XP Home and the network card (if I looked up the right thing) is a Realtek TRL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.

Any comments you can give would really help.

Okay first I very much doubt that the modem cares whether you are using Vista or not, so that's something to disregard.

Is the hardware a "Speedtouch 330 Modem" from the UK ? Googling indicates this hardware is being provided by an ISP ?

If so, your best source of information is the ISP. Check to see if they have configuration instructions on-line, or call Tech Support for assistance.

I'd guess that you have some sort of USB driver conflict. It's not uncommon to have issues if you get a bunch of USB devices all connected. Networking seems especially prone to have issues with other USB devices...

I just got a DSL line hooked up to my pc, however the modem (a Zyxel Prestige 645M-USP ADSL modem) I have isn't "communicating with the pc". I was told by the guy who installed it that there was a way to "go into it and configure it (the modem)" so that it would work. I know a bit about computers, but I have no idea what the heck he was talking about. He said that he didn't know how to do it either, he just installs them.

Anyways, does anybody know how do to this? I can still go online through the dial up connection, but I'm dying to get this DSL thing working. Btw, I get my DSL/internet through Twin Lakes here in Livingston, TN.

Also I have asked this question here, and they have suggested some things that were to no avail.

OK so my ISP has changed my modem and now I have to connect to WAN so that I could connect when before I could browse the net, so I checked browser configuration of the modem and it says that its in bridging, if I remember correctly, it was supposed to be routing so that I don't have to connect to WAN and it the modem will do the job, the web configuration only shows status so I have to use the telnet to configure it. So I'm asking help how would I configure it? I don't want to touch anything from it without proper knowledge

There is a list of compatable modems here............
You would need to enter your user name and
password when you connect to the internet.
If you are using a router, then configuration should
be the same as it is using their modem.
If there is a problem, you would probably just need to
call support and give them the MAC address from the

A friend of mine has a broadband account with AOL. The computer works fine if the modem AOL supplied is used, however they wanted to go wireless so that the second computer they have could access AOL if the other one was offline.
The computers can 'talk' to each other via the wireless but the modem bit of the adsl wireless modem/router does not seem able to connect with AOL for either computer. This appears to be a problem with the set up of the modem which is a fairly standard Newlink. The set up menu has a specific AOL button which configures the modem to AOL's settings but nothing happens afterwards.
They are tearing their hair out and I am starting to do the same! Knowing my luck it will be something so obvious I haven't thought of it.
All help gratefully received.

When the laptop is charging, especially if the battery is very low, the removal
of the A/C adaptor from the laptop creates a SPARK and this creates RFI;
Radio Frequence Interference. A wireless ADSL modem may take the RFI

hello this is uday and New is this site.i am facing problem with 3 public ip in one adsl modem it is possable or if possable tell me how

A:3 public IP in one ADSL modem

That's call a Virtual Ethernet Interface but requires three sources to feed the virtual addresses, eg:

--- 192.168.1.x network ------+
--- 172.16.10.x network ---+ |
--- 10.101.23.x network -+ | |
| | |
common switch ---- systemX with Virtual Interfaces

Then systemX can have one NIC which has a real ip address on (say) the 192.168.1 net,
and virtual addresses for the 172.16.10 and 10.101.23 net

The source networks could just as easily be public ISP connections thru separate modems
(which would require 3x DSL lines and modems for example).

You should start by using an Ethernet connection between the modem and computer before trying to use the wireless. Many routers need to be configured before the wireless will work. Also since this is a new setup you should talk to the ISP, especially before updating the firmware.

Greetings techguy(s)-

Forgive me for asking what is likely old-hat stuff.

Given a) a Zoom model 5615 ADSL Bridge modem currently Internet-connected; b) a Win XP-Prof.-SP3 computer currently connected to the modem (via the Ethernet interconnection) and via that to the Internet; and c) another XP-SP3 computer, nearby and currently not so connected but also containing Ethernet capability, how can I most readily interconnect all 3 items so that d) either computer can access the Internet and e) each computer can "see" the other one for the purpose of interchanging files, making backups from computer #2 to a removable USB HD on computer #1, etc.?

Should be a slam-dunk but...knowing Windows, perhaps not...?

I am staying at my brother's house right now. They have Embarq DSL and have a EQ-660R ADSL Router (that's what they call it. I wouldn't call it a router). On a typical day, you can expect it to loose internet connectivity multiple times per hour. It will usually find a signal and reconnect within a couple of minutes. I have never had DSL, only cable. Is this something that is typical with DSL, or is it probably something wrong with the modem/router. I have noticed this modem on ebay for only a couple of bucks. Would it be worth picking one up, or is this something he is going to have to deal with as long as he has DSL? Thanks for the help.

Is there any way to block the way crackers crack my modem? If yes, how please?

Hi all We have had our ADSL modem working modem ADSL problems for over years non stop Literally Lately problems have arisen Normally any internet problems occur with the router but ADSL modem problems now its the modem The first problem that occured was that the ADSL lights would spontaneously turn off and thus kill the internet connection for any computer While this killed connection would not physically show in the form of a windows alert since we were connected to a router we could tell because the connection would slow and fail This problem occured randomly Yesterday I was just pissed at that and decided to unplug the modem for a good amount of time to let it cool down Once I plugged it back in the power light came on but no other light did No status light no ADSL lights no Ethernet lights I have not plugged it in since but I will try again tonight when I get home Sorry I could not provide you with a model name for the modem but I can provide one when I return home and figure it out It is unlikely however I will be able to connect to the Internet when I am at home though I have a feeling it is the fault of a new phone we installed recently I will try some on off tests with those But other than that does anyone have any ideas as to why the modem would spontaneously bust like that I appreciate your input Thanks nbsp

If i plug my usb adsl modem in and the exchange HAS been enabled will the modem sinc and the adsl light stay green all the time ( or whatever it does ) or will it only do it once we get to the 7/8/03 when my account with Freedom2surf (isp) starts ?

A:Adsl FROG modem

The DSL line needs to configured by your local telco...

I imagine that it will be done before 7/8/03--- Im assuming thats Aug. 8, 03

Until the line is configured... the ready light should just blink (because its not synching to anything) Once it synchs (and your account has been activated) you should be ready to go.

Can you give me the exact model of the modem? Preferably from a sticker.

In future, when uninstalling use Revo uninstaller from

When prompted for the Removal Type choose Advanced.

The program is safe, sets a System Restore point first (assuming you haven't disabled it), I use it all the time both for myself and for my customers.

Assuming the program still appears in Add / Remove Programs or Program and Features - Revo WILL be able to remove it regardless of whether the built in uninstaller works or not. Just continue with the Revo bit after the built-in uninstaller fails.

why is that ?

A:XP SP2 cannot identify GlobeSpanVirata Adsl Modem

Hi LightBlue25 !

XP hasn't got all drivers for all devices already included. You probably need to reinstall the modem. If you received any disks with the modem the drivers will be on it, else you'll have to go to the manufacturer's website support section to search for the appropriate drivers.

This website has a driver for the GlobespanVirata USB ADSL WAN Modem (make sure it's your modem before you try to install it) :

I have set up an internet connection for my girlfriends dad using Tiscali (service provider)
The problem I am having is I cannot get the broadband connection to work.

I have set the modem up as explained in the instructions given, but all i get is a flashing light.

The strange thing is that i was on the phone the other day and the light stopped flashing and stayed on, i got a connection, but when i finished the phone call the connection was lost.
So the broadband only works when the phone is in use.
Would this be down to the microfilters? there is one near the computer and one in the main phone socket. (there are also two other sockets without microfilters, and a sky connection)

Also the computer is connected to a secondary phone socket not the main. would this affect the signal?

Any help would be great!

A:No Signal On Adsl Modem (tiscali)

I would believe you may have a bad POTS line. Run down to Walmart and pick up a pre-made telephone line and run straight to the POTS service box from your DSL modem.POTS= Plain Old Telephone Service

Do ADSL Modem / Routers need special drivers installed on Windows 7?

I'm asking as I saw this in a product description "Supports operating systems, such as Windows95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista, Unix, and Mac". Is there any sub-text to that statement, e.g. "but not Windows 7"?

I would connect the router to the PCs using wired Ethernet. If I used wireless connections would any special drivers be needed?

A:Q: ADSL Modem Routers and drivers?

Most routers and modems will work just fine on Windows 7. If you're just using a DSL modem, you may have to log into the modem using PPPoe in order to connect. If you're using a router you may have to use that to connect via PPPoe. Some connections differ though, for example my family's dsl connects straight through the modem like cable connections. My cable connection doesn't require any log in, just a previous cable modem mac address authentication by the server.

You're most likely going to be working with PPPoe as mentioned and if you don't use a router you'll need to log in with the computer.

Well, not so long ago I got ADSL. In the process of the modem installation I got two new icons added to my system tray: one, I think, is 'CSA', whatever that might be, and the other just says: 'Unplug or Eject Hardware'.

I double clicked the second one, unchecked the box saying 'Show Icon in System Tray', and it was goan. The 'CSA' icon has an option to be removed from the tray icon too.

The question:
Do I need those apps constantly running in the BG? Can I remove them from the tray, prevent them from starting at startup, and only run them when I connect?

They slow my computer a great deal, getting really molases-like.

I have recently bought a second handed ADSL modem which is an "ESHARCO ESF-11066 ADSL2+" THE PACK CONTAIN NO INSTALATION CD ,and i cant find driver files on internet either, can anyone help me find the driver please?

A:I cant find my ADSL modem driver

You only need a modem driver if it connects to a USB port on your PC, otherwise, where it connects to a network card via CAT5 or CAT6 cable, no driver required as it's the card which needs a driver and that should already be installed.

If it is a USB modem, I'm afraid I can't find any info on that make/model.

I use an external xdsl modem. I just received an HPv40 fax/copier/printer. I want to be able to use my fax even if I am online. I can't figure out the correct connection configuration. By the way, the HPv40 uses a usb connection.

Thank you for any help at all!

A:Connect Fax & External adsl Modem

You need a filter for the phone line that you're connecting the device to, and then the fax machine can dial out while you're on the internet. It's the same as all the other phones in your house.

Hi all,

I am new to the site, I have tried searching around for some help for my problem but haven't found anything specific, so I thought I would register and start a new thread

I am fairly computer literate, I have set up some basic home networks, done port-forwarding, some video streaming and am a flash programmer but I am not in any way advanced at networking.

Here is my deal. I am house sitting for a friend. He has ADSL broadband with ukonline. He has a voyager 105 modem that he connects directly to his PC. I want to expand the network for use by multiple PCs. I want to know if I buy a wireless router, am I going to be able to expand the network or is there a chance that the ISP will make this a nightmare? Has anyonelse encountered a similar issue?

Thanks a lot

My Conexant AccessRunner ADSL randomly shuts down and connects again, with no reason.
Of course the net connection is lost, and i have to connect manualy when it happens.
It looks as if there is some malware.
I run Ewido , ad-aware,windows defender,and Norton AV 2005.
By the way it never happened before i formatted recently.

Hi all,

Hopefully this is the right place to ask, I don't visit the networking section much as it is by no means my strong point.

I currently have an old Netgear DG834GSP modem/router which was supplied by Virgin Media many years ago, It's firmware is locked and can not be updated. This router is getting very old and outdated and I am looking for a bit of an update in the area.

I am not looking at spending lots on a brand new router if it isn't necessary. Its only for home use with a number of devices connecting to it, mostly wireless (2 desktops, 2 laptops, XBox 360, Wii, couple of mobile phones etc).

I heard the Netwgear DGN2000 is supposed to be a decent unit but that is 3 years old now (still newer than the one I have haha).

Anyone have any thoughts and/or recommendations?

Thanks in advance.
