windows wont load after removing ubuntu

Q: windows wont load after removing ubuntu

i was dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu. i wanted to remove ubuntu so i formatted the hd it was on (not on the same hd as w7), but now, my pc wont start up. i tried the repair feature with the windows disc as well as restoring to a previous back up. windows 7 does not show up as an option. so i removed the hd that ubuntu was on, and still nothing. the pc wont even load. all i get is the flashing cursor on the screen.

now, i put in the windows 7 disc and selected to try and find my os, My Computer pops up and i am able to see my files and the hd that windows is on. but it tells me to load a driver. im not sure where to find this driver.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Preferred Solution: windows wont load after removing ubuntu

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

let me also mentioned that i tried to reinstall ubuntu to the hd and it did not work. i tried to install a different version of windows 7 over the hd and nothing. i got a message saying that the format (NTFS) was not usable with windows 7. i removed the hd from my pc, put it into an external case and connected it to a laptop. it was not recognized.

A:Windows wont load, Boot CD wont load, Automatic Repair Loop

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.
I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."
Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.
Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0
Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."
Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"
BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files
Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

A:Removing XP from Windows 7, Ubuntu triple boot

It says it is the system partition. Thus the Bootloader for windows 7 resides on it. You can delete the Windows folder, and many of the other folders on the XP drive, but not the Boot - Boot Configuration Data (BCD) folder or many of the files in the Root of that drive - if you do, you may need to repair or reinstall windows 7.

HI guys this is my first post so any help welcome.

I bought a few HP desktops from a bankruptcy auction thinking that they would have Windows installed but I loaded one up and it has this system called ubuntu. This is despite there being a Windows product sticker and validation code on the computer.

So I have the product code but the problem is they were supplied with no disk.

So my 1st question is, how do I install Windows without the disk and remove ubuntu.

My second is what operating system have I bought? The sticker on the PC says Its for Windows 7 Pro but then another sticker below says Windows 7 downgraded to XP Pro.

Many thanks for your time

A:Bought old PCs with ubuntu. How do I load Windows?

Ubuntu is Linux. Linux is a free OS. You need a Windows disc to install Windows, there is no other way. You can order a Windows recovery disc for this computer from HP: Looking for HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive? | HP? Support
Other then that you can purchase the retail version of Windows from Ebay or Craigslist.

You can create a w7 installer on a USB flash drive and reinstall with that. For how see here: Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool

Download the iso file for your w7 version from here, Dell Community Sometime the iso will not work the first time and requires a re-download.

Still using the live CD I saw that Ubuntu had not finished but the little it did install was simply lingering on my drive For some reason - probably sheer shock coupled with sleep deprivation - I didn t check to see if anything remained of Windows before I shut down the Ubuntu wiped HDD, including Windows 7, and it will not load boot discs. computer I then removed the live CD and booted the computer up After POST I m greeted by a screen that looks like the command prompt but I am unable to input any commands I first tried to access the recovery partition by pressing F at startup which used to work but it simply cuts to the aforementioned black screen I also tried using various emergency boot discs but none of them worked some weren t recognized loaded and others partially loaded before displaying an error message Since then I have yet to get it to boot to a disc without an error occurring I am going to contact ASUS and have a recovery disc s sent but I doubt they ll do any good I can t get the computer to load discs and that s not even mentioning my likely-gone recovery partition I m also concerned that my HDD is irreparably damaged Are there any solutions anybody can offer If any additional information is required just ask and I will be glad to oblige nbsp

Hi all I've been researching on how to fix this problem all Windows Ubuntu cannot alongside Windows I After load 7, installing day and I haven't made any progress Hopefully you guys can help I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows on my little sister's HP Mini and Ubuntu is up and running like a champ but when I select to boot Windows I get only a blinking cursor After installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, I cannot load Windows I made a Windows repair disk and used Bootrec exe to try and fix the MBR which I thought was probably the issue At first I used only the command FixMbr and then when I booted I got a screen with a lot of text Unfortunately I don't remember what it said now but it was something along the lines of Windows not being able to boot I have since used the commands fixboot and RebuildBCD after backing up my BCD as detailed in this Microsoft article I now only ever see a blinking cursor in the top left corner I am unable to get to a boot selection menu I really have no idea what to do now and I'm having extreme difficulty finding out what to do from here I really appreciate any help you are able to lend Thanks

A:After installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, I cannot load Windows

are you still able to boot to ubuntu after trying those fixes? also did you create your own partitions for linux or did you let ubuntu create them? finally was win 7 the original os that came with the computer?

if you are able to boot to linux, go to the file explorer (not sure of what it is called in ubuntu - same as windows explorer) and make sure the windows partition is there. if not able to boot to linux, boot to the ubuntu live disk and check.

Do a hardware/software reset with your BIOS:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

After doing those steps, clear your CMOS by entering the BIOS (see your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS), going to the EXIT screen, and loading setup/optimized defaults.

I'm running windows 7 and my geforce 8400GS graphics card. I'm trying to duel screen using a siemens LL 3220T monitor and a Acer X223HQ monitor. The Siemens is connected via the VGA port and the Acer is connected via the DVI with a converter plugged in allowing the VGA monitor to connect to the DVI port. The problem is the Acer monitor doesn't work! Windows doesn't detect it at all! I can rule out hardware issues because when I run ubuntu using the exact same set up both monitors work perfectly well! I tried downloading the newest drivers for my Nvida card but still no success. The monitor doesn't show up as being connected on any of my settings! Can anyone help me?
Kindest regards,

I trust that you have the NVidia drivers installed.

In the NVidia control panel, in the pane at the left, chose the "setup multiple displays" task. Are both displays detected?

Might be a failing Hard drive. Get to your bios and see if there is any diagnostics there to do a hard drive test. On some motherboards its delete on others its F2. If there is no diagnostics on the bios i would make a USB bootable diagnostics and do that.

If you are not concerned with data loss, then just boot from the XP CD, and follow the prompts for a "New" installation, and allow it to delete/create a new partition to replace the Ubuntu partition, and that's it.

A long title indeed, but it pretty much sums it all up. I have installed Ubuntu first and then dual booted windows XP. I soon found out that the fact Ubuntu wasn't compatible with many programs (even through wine) I wanted only Windows XP on my pc.
I've searched many topics, but all described how to uninstall Ubuntu when Windows was the primary OS. In my case Ubuntu is the main OS and it dual boots with Windows and I want to rid myself of Ubuntu leaving only Windows.

What do I need to do to get the desired computer setup? Or is it irrelevant which OS was installed first and will a guide describing how to remove Ubuntu from windows work as well for my case.

shouldn't matter the install sequence if you want to only have Windows. Boot into Windows and then delete (from disk management) the linux partitions. This may leave your computer in a state where you can not boot into Windows. To fix this you'll have to boot off the XP install disk and boot to the recovery console, once there type 'fixmbr' without the '

Recently I installed Ubuntu on my HP laptop with Vista. I have since decided to remove it and stupidly deleted the partitions using a program in Vista. I then got a GRUB error and had to reinstall Ubuntu using the LiveCD to be able to boot to either OS.

So I have searched around and found out that I need to perform the fixmbr command to restore the master boot record in Vista. Then I could safely remove Ubuntu? However I do not have a Vista CD, it came pre-installed and have no idea what to do as everything that I have read has told me to use a CD that I do not have.

One way is to right click on my computer, click on the manage option. There you can delete the section of hard drive that was allocated to the Ubuntu installation and then expand the Windows 7 drive to take up the empty space left behind.

Also you can remove it from your boot options by following this simple tutorial.

Hi a couple of months ago my system crashed windows wouldnt boot and I boot, help 7 wont Win disk doesnt boot, startup Ubuntu , windows dual misplaced my installation disk I had Win 7 , Ubuntu dual boot, windows wont boot, startup disk doesnt help the problems several times since obtaining the computer several years ago Lenovo IDeaPad y I attributed the problem to what I believed was a bad hard disk so I replaced it with a refurbished model I installed Ubungu and it worked well ever since I later located my win disk and created a dual boot Windows worked very well for several months until it stopped starting up last week It would get to the black windows screen where it says starting and usually get stuck there I would get fed up and turn it off after half an hour Once it was as the screen and it later started the checkdisk program and found no errors Another time it finally got into windows after a very long loading time and it seemed to work fine until the next time I restarted windows It just went back to the loading windows screen I formatted the windows partition through GParted in Ubuntu and tried the installation disk and it would get stuck at in the quot expanding files quot sequence After an hour of hoping something would happen I got fed up and forced it off again Not sure what to do from this point I have read other posts and it has led me to think that the issue could possibly be bad RAM or an issue with BIOS But Ubuntu has been working fine while Windows has simply been freezing at any attempt of a startup

A:Win 7 , Ubuntu dual boot, windows wont boot, startup disk doesnt help

It could be that the HDD has a bad sector in the Windows partition, or that the drive is actually failing. If there is a utility in Linux that tests memory, I would run it.

You could also use Memtest86+. It runs from a CD/DVD. Let it run for several passes to rule out bad RAM.

Have two hard drives, both had windows, tried to install Ubuntu on both with
same exact 'error' problem. Fdisk will remove the main partition but not the
other minor/secondary 4% of disk one.

Is there a program that will erase this unwanted partition or should I leave it
alone and hope that windows XP or even ME will install on either of these Hard Drives ?

I have Windows vista and currently dual boot ubuntu linux

I was thinking about removing linux as my dad is not happy with it dual booting because he is not familiar with it

I was wondering if factory restore would remove everything to do with linux. or would it still be there but with no documents or anything...

I have a few quick questions to add to this topic being:

1) Would linux be permanently removed if i tried factory restore
2) Would the partitions be eliminated leaving only one full partition

replies would be greatly appreciated

thank you!

I'm trying to get a Toshiba satelite L300D to start Win-7.
It gives an error message:

"An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data"

Not really sure what that means,
but my guess is thats a file that it isn't finding.

My pic isn't very clear, the Status is 0xc000000f,
again not sure what that means.

This machine has been runing and well behaved for a long time.

Any help to get this running would be very welcome.

Cheers, John

DDR2 refers to the RAM. From what you have said it sounds like the RAM has gone faulty. Do you have any other PC's in your house that are simular to yours?

How much RAM do you have in the PC? If you have 2 x Sticks try removing one at a time to try and resolve the problem.

On that screen where they have safe mode options there is an option to disable auto reboots after an error. Turn that so the machine doesn't restart automatically and get the error message/codes that are displayed.

Try running the System File Checker, it will look for damaged files and repair them.Instructions 1. Locate your Windows XP installation CD. If you don't have one, you'll need to locate a directory on your system that's named"i386" (without the quotes). This directory may be on a hidden partition on your hard drive. 2. Go to Start, then to Run, and type in "SFC.EXE /SCANNOW"? (without the quotes - and with a space between the SFC.EXE and the /SCANNOW). Then press Enter. (For VISTA, go to Start and type in the above information, then go to the top of the box and right click on SFC.EXE /SCANNOW and select "Run As Administrator") 3. The program may (or it may not) ask you for your Windows XP installation CD - please insert it at the prompt. If it doesn't ask you for the CD this means that it wasn't necessary to replace any files. 4. In the event the the system asks you for the CD, you must visit Windows Update immediately after the scan is completed (Please note that there won't be any confirmation dialog - the program will just exit without telling you anything). 5. If this doesn't repair the problem with your system other troubleshooting procedures are required.*Credit for these instructions goes to USASMA.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Your issue is probably putting a hard drive that has an O.S. on it from another system and trying to boot it. You are probably having driver conflicts.
In order to use that hard drive in the new system you are going to have to fdsik/reformat and install a fresh copy of your O.S.

Sure it will boot from the other machine, it is set to that particular system and its hardware.
I hope this has helped

Welcome to bc. Windows 7 will do hyper terminal just fine. Sounds like you have a bad hard drive.

Does the ram count happen and can you get into bios setup? It's usually one of the function keys, f10 or f12, I don't know exactly on the eee pc.

If you can and you have a usb drive you can search google for guides on how to put xp or a rescue cd on the drive, boot to it, and correct the drive error.

Hi there, really sounds like your computer is giving you an informational message called a blue screen. If your system isn't powering down then the likeliness of the hard drive being dead is not as much of a possibility but still possible.

There are a couple things that can be wrong that come to mind with this type of machine and the information you've posted (Which is minimal at best).

The machine either has bad memory, a virus or indeed the drive is failing/failed.

you might get away with an 'in-place' upgrade (re-installation) but it is more likely that you'll have to re-install the operating system from scratch to avoid any glitches.

simply moving the hard drive into another computer (and your computer is now VERY different) rarely works out.

i think its a virus, prob is, so i cant get windows to load normally, nor in safe mode and i cant even get into system restore, it loads then there is a quick blue screen and then restarts on its own.... i have a 1TB HD in 4 partitions i can only see the C drive listed and it says 132 out of 931 free which makes sense with all the data on all 4 parts......i took the HD and used an enclosure but the i cant get the D to recognize anywhere......i was thinking maybe using the Combo fix on the boot up might work????

any help would be great appreciated as im usually pretty good at backing things up but i need school work on there for finals coming up.....thanks you and happy holidays

My windows does not load. Once the windows logo appears it freezes then restarts.
I did launch startup repair and it goes to black screen with white arrow, nothing else.
I tried to recover factory settings, and it said missing a file.
I pressed F8 and and did the start from last good config. Nothing also.
I did disable auto restart and blue screen gave me this:
unmountable boot volume stop: 0x000000ED (0XFFFFFA8004F575D0, OXFFFFFFFFC00000B5, 0X0000000000000000, 0X0000000000000000)

Start with the sfc /scannow command from an elevated command line in safe mode.

if you still have issues with sfc being unable to repair anything , use

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

and then restart the PC and re-run sfc /scannow again.

The jolt has either damaged the hard drive or corrupted Windows. I hope you have back-ups of your data. It's an all-in-one computer and difficult to work on but you should have little difficulty reaching the hard drive. Maybe you can repair Windows if it's a software problem otherwise you will need to replace the hard drive.

What was the last thing you did or what did you do differently the last time you used it. Install any programs, updates etc....Any sign of life at all? Giving us the brand name and model number would be a big help and I should add this has to be hardware so it should be covered by warranty as well.
One easy thing to do is pull power supply out and the battery which is usually released by switches on the laptop underside. Then plug it in again without the battery and try to boot it.

For someone as me (and others as well of course) something like installing an operating system is child's play as we've done it dozens of times, but I do understand that it's not that simple for others

I really do encourage people who'd like to try reinstalling an operating system on their own, It's really not dificult once you get the hang of it

If you are not certain of yourself then you can always use a helping hand, you can find several tutorials on the internet which guide you step by step through the installation procedure. Do make sure you have all the drivers of your system ready for when you reinstalled your system, their are standard drivers included in the vista installation, but you better install the drivers that fit your hardware. If you have the CD's containing your drivers, you're good, if you don't you can download them from the website of the hardware's manufacturer. When you download it, make sure you know the type number of your hardware because every piece of hardware has its own drivers.

Another important factor that you have to take into account is your processor. Before installing double check whether your processor is a 32 bits or a 64 bits processor because operating systems come in 2 kinds lately, 32 and 64 bit version. If you install a 32 bit operating system on a 64 bit processor, or vice versa, you won't get optimal results from your processor.

If you are really not certain of yourself, ask around in your vicinity, your friends, your family, ... whether there's someone who IS familiar with reinstalling Windows and ask if they have some spare time for you to guide you during the reinstallation.

I've talked to my boyfriend about your problem, and he quite certain that it's your GUI (graphical user interface) which is messed up and he also says best thing to do is a reinstallation.

He also wants to know whether when you try to boot up your system, whether you hear beeping sounds from your computer and how many beeps.

I'm not a pro at this, but I will try to help

I have an emachines (E525) with windows 7. When I try to start up my computer I get directed to a windows error recover screen. At that point I am given 2 options.
1. Launch start up repair
2. Start windows normally.
If I pick option 2 I get stuck in a continuous re-booting loop that brings me right back to these options. If I pick option one. I just get a blank black screen.
I do not have any kind of recovery disk. what can I do? Any help would be appreciated

A:windows 7 wont load

There may be a 'recovery' partition on the hard drive. If there is (it's often hidden from Windows Explorer but the partition will be visible in Disk Management) you can invoke the recovery routine by pressing a specific key during the initial boot process. I believe that key is f11 for eMachines computers.

See if you can boot into Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 while the laptop turns on, you should get a list of options shown, one is to boot into safe mode).

I'm assuming this is caused by software and not a hardware change, you haven't changed anything have you?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Did you replace the CMOS battery? How long does the computer stay on for before locking up?

Do the following: Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Then type: chkdsk /f and restart the computer.

Let Windows check for a bad hard drive.

After that is done. Download Memtest86+ and use IMGBurn to but it to a CD. Then change the boot order to boot from thr CD and allow MemTest to get 20 passes. That will check for bad RAM. Write down any errors (red) and post back.

I do computer work on the side, and I have no copies of any windows CD, I have had a few people ask me to fix their computers because they cannot load into Windows. I am able to run Ubuntu to recover their data, but how to I get their Windows back up and running. Is there like a recovery disk available online or something, I dont know. But 95% of people do not make backup disc or have their CD's. What is my option, without installing a illegil copy.

Howdy Ravensbane..

Have you tried pressing last known good config (the last time it worked) I knw that is not the exact wording but something like that towards the bottom.
If that does not work you might want to open the case (while unplugged) and look for a small silver battery and remove it for a good 30 seconds then put it back in..This will reset the BIOS (Basic input output) that should cure your woes

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before the troubles.

If that doesn't work, try running a startup repair from the Windows DVD or repair disc. You may need to run it several times.

If you don't have a Windows DVD or repair disc, you can create one. See this tutorial:

A:Windows xp wont load up

If you cannot get past this very early part of the Boot process then typically that would mean that the Boot routine does not know where to find Windows.

In simplified terms the Windows XP startup process follows this sequence (please note that this is simpliified)

PHASE 1 : Start > POST Sequence > Partition Table > MBR > Boot Code > ntldr

PHASE 2 : ntldr > boot.ini > > ntoskrnl.exe > hal.dll > REGISTRY > winlogon.exe > lsass.exe > User Logon

If the sequence gets as far as ntldr and ntldr is not found then a message "NTLDR is missing" will be displayed. If you are not getting that message then the boot sequence is probably not getting as far as ntldr.

If the problem lies with the Partition Table then you should receive the message "Invalid partition table".

Now the only part of the sequence that occurs between the Partition Table and the ntldr is the MBR > Boot Code. Therefore if you are getting neither an "Invalid partion table" nor an "NTLDR is missing" message then the most likely cause is a corrupt MBR and/or Track 0.

If you use imaging software such as Acronis True Image (or similar) then all you need do is restore the MBR and Track 0, reboot and the problem should be resolved.

If you don't have an image of the MBR and Track 0 then get back to the Forum.

I tried to install windows xp on the new drive but it says "installation failed" (without any special reason given).
I have also noticed that even when i dissabled the usb driver in the bios , it still detect the mass storage harddisk connected (in the screen where you press del for setup menu ).
