Problems After Upgrading BIOS

Q: Problems After Upgrading BIOS

Hey guys.

I just flashed the BIOS on my ASUS P5B-MX / WiFi-AP Motherboard. I upgraded from version 0501 to 0702. However, after the update i can't set my RAM to 667MHz as I could do before. It keeps it at 533MHz.

I use Transcend PC5300 RAM.

It also says "Unknown CPU detected. BIOS upgrade is required to unleash its full power." when I start my PC. However I press F1 and it continues to Windows.

Please help.

Preferred Solution: Problems After Upgrading BIOS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Problems After Upgrading BIOS

A BIOS update should allow the detection of more types of CPU, not fewer. It almost sounds like the "newer" BIOS is actually older.

Can you post a link to the BIOS updates you used? What problem forced you to the drastic need to update the BIOS?

A:Problems upgrading bios on ispiron 5100

The specs for the Dell insiron 5100 say that maximum ram is 1 GB. however this does not necessairlly mean that you can use a single 1Gb stick. it may be that your laptop has to have TWO 512 sticks to run at 1 Gb of ram. I would suggest checking your dell handbook or going to the dell site to see how large of a single stick of ram the laptop can use.

I had a new motherboard FIC VL13L and Celeron 2.2G. But the motherboard has a older version of BIOS which can only support Celeron 2.0G. I tried to upgrade the BIOS but it requires a supported CPU, which I don't have. How can I solve the dilemma?

Another problem is before I realized the incompatibility between the motherboard and the CPU, I installed CPU + fan and powered up for several times. Then when I removed CPU and fan, they were stuck together and couldn't be seperated. Is that the way it's supposed to be, or did I damage them already?

Please help! Thank you very much.

well, im not sure about the mobo issue, but i'm pretty sure that the cpu and fan shouldn't be stuck together. did you apply a coat of that goo stuff? (i forget what it's called, some sorta lubricant yadda yadda)

I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?

A:Will upgrading the bios firmware on a Latitude D630 delete the bios admin password?

Didn't you reply here, and say it worked (after the unusual 9th try )

Awfully strange!

A bios update can't remove passwords. As You Must Know

Oh and thanks for the extended long Title. I'm thinking this Topic of yours would be best removed? What do you think?

I bought Windows 7 having come from Vista. However, there is a BIOS update for my system. The new BIOS update states: The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support. It is located here:

I'd love to flash it but not sure if it will ruin my computer as it's more than likely not designed for flash when Windows 7 is on it or do you's know any better?

I also have 2 blue vertical lines going do the right hand side of the screen. I've seen loads of problems but no solutions. Has any fixed this HP problem?

Cheers folks!

A:Upgrading BIOS after Upgrading from Vista to 7

The BIOS is the stuff that happens BEFORE Windows starts to load.
Do you have issues with overheating or with the fan? If so, the BIOS update is for you.
Also, BIOS flashes are dangerous - and you can turn your computer into a paperweight by doing it incorrectly. In short, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

The type of lines that you describe on your screen are usually caused by hardware issues. Send it in for repair if the system is under warranty. If not, then get an estimate from a local computer store - it may be cheaper to live with it.

My computer keeps crashing and I keep getting this error. The error report I get back says the error is unknown, but consider a bios upgrade. I already went to my mobos manufacturers website and if you want a bios upgrade they refer you to some site that charges you money.

Does anyone know a free way to upgrade your bios? If you do, please explain with the most lamen terms possible, for I am not the greatest with repairs.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Your cpu should run on an fsb of 166mhz(333mhz effective) Giving you a cpu speed of 2083mhz.

See HERE for AMD Athlon XP specs.

Check in your bios that the fsb is correct.

There is an old computer that needs to have the BIOS upgraded on it because it is very low advanced, and only gives you 3 different options in the setup. It is a very good computer, but the problem with this BIOS is that it will not recognize any hard drive over 2 gigs. I am trying to install a 15 gig in there now.

The purpose of reviving this computer is to give it to a friend who doesn't really have a computer, and I see this as a good alternative. I will also install Windows 2000 on this computer.

Now I heard that installing the incorrect BIOS software will completely DESTROY the motherboard and render it useless. Could someone point me to the correct software upgrade? I am not sure where to find the info for the BIOS either, such as the manufacturer.

You need to confirm this with the service tag from your daughter's computer, but there is a BIOS update that can be run from the hard drive.

Go to and enter the computers service tag, and that will definitely lead you to the correct BIOS update.

A:Bios Upgrading

Likely an error in the download. Those BIOS updates are protected as much as possible from defects. If there is any chance of a problem, the BIOS install will not run, because it can permanently ruin the computer.
Suggest you run a new download when all this bad weather has stopped stiring up the internet.

Hi guys, so recently I've been hit with an error that involved the BIOS, to cut a long story short I want to upgrade my BIOS to the latest version.

My BIOS model and version is:

(according to System Information in Windows XP)

American Megatrends Inc.07.00T, 02/04/2001
SMBios Version: 2.3

I have went directly to AMI's website but they just direct you to a software that needs to be downloaded and paid for before you cane ven use it.

I have an ECS M848A rev 2.1 motherboard. So the BIOS and Motherboard manufacturer are not the same. I've also directly been to PC Chips website and can see that the M848AULA rev 2.1 is the exact same model as I can see on the picture on the website, and can confirm that is the one.

I'd like to know how I can found the right BIOS version for my system.

Quote from here:

However, you will need to have AFLASH.EXE (unzipped) utiility and set the floppy drive as the boot drive. Then, type in the command [ FORMAT A:/S ] (without [] brackets) in DOS mode to create a boot disk. Do not keep AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files in it; Later on, choose item [1] ?Save Current BIOS to File (Save Existing BIOS to File) screen will appear. My current BIOS is version 3.22 (6FET92WW) dated 2011. Despite Lenovo System Update v5.07.0029 NOT displaying any BIOS updates, when I happened to check Lenovo's site for drivers & software I see that Version 3.23 (BIOS ID: 6FET93WW) update is available. It is not described as "Important" and only offers "Added support for the function to disable & unconfigure AMT via WMI". I'm not sure if SU is failing to offer the update, or if has good reason not to offer it. I've also read that some people have had issues with v3.23 and needed to revert to the previous 3.22 version. Is the newer version "really" required to perform the W10 upgrade? Frank

My computer is Envy 700-159, Windows 10 home, 64 bit.  The old version of BIOS was ok. But after I upgrade the BIOS to the latest version 80.21 Rev A (sp73062.exe ), I can't get booted into the SSD C drive that I want, and all the function keys (F1-12) including the Esc key don't work, so I can't even change the boot sequence.  I tried to change key board to a wired one from a wireless one, but didn't help either.  There may be a bug in this version of BIOS 80.21.  Any soluction?  Hope for a new version soon. Thanks.

Hello @Invincible007, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! The Forums are a great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community! I understand that you are having an issue with the BIOS, and wanted to assist you! It seems that there are no Windows 10 drivers available for your product, on the HP site.  This may be why you are having issues.  Have you tried performing a System Restore, to set the notebook back to its previous working state?  If you are still having trouble, then try recovering the BIOS using the following document: HP Desktop PCs - Recovering the BIOS Please let me know if this information helps you resolve the issue by marking this post as "Accept as Solution", this will help others easily find the information they may be looking for.  Also, clicking the Thumbs up below is a great way to say thanks! Have a great day!

A:Difficulty upgrading bios on a Nforce2 chipset

If the "latest" BIOS revision is 2004, then you may not be able to upgrade .

Most (if not all) BIOS are tied to a board/chipset/manufacturer combination, and I doubt if it's prudent to go "BIOS shopping" and install an alien piece of firmware in your beloved board. It sounds like a recipe for disaster,

The RAID controllers you speak off should be based in hardware as well, and your board simply may not have the capabilities you want.

It's way easy to turn a board into a brick with an improper BIOS flash, even the right update.

I realize that I'm no fun, sorry. Maybe someone else knows more about this than I do.

A quick google leads me to believe that the Phoenix Corporation manufacturers "Award BIOS", and that they're really not 2 separate entities. But here again, things change fast in tech products.
Here's the answer, they've merged:

I have an Ibm Netvista 2257-82u
1.0mghz processor
40 gig h.d.
Intel 810e onboard video..etc

The system is in a continuous boot mode it makes it to the Winxp
Startup screen.....and then it starts over........and over and over.
I was wondering if maybe updating the system bios might fix the problem. Iv'e tried running with a new harddrive and I still get the same problem.

sometimes when I put a harddrive in that is loaded with windows 98se, I can get it to boot up in safe mode but not with Xp.

Can a virus cause this problem? Can a virus reside in the hardware on the motherboard? If so how can I fix it?

Dear forum users,
I have a big problem as my Dell Inspiron15 3000 series laptp started to behave strangely since I updated the bios from the version on the dell drivers and support website.

I upgraded to the V12 version Dell Inspiron 3442,3542,5748 System BIOS Version: A12 ,A12, when originally the laptop came with version A06.

However, since the upgrade, my laptop battery drains after I have switched the laptop off. Therefore I'm having all kinds of issues starting the laptop in the morning and I am afraind this behaviour will lead to a disfunctioning laptop rather soon.
Downgrading the bios version to version A06 is not possible as the utility exists with the message that Dell doesn't recommend downgrading the BIOS version.
What can I do?

MisterZ Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I wish I had good news for you -- but I don't ... According to the HP product page, the ONLY BIOS update version available is from back in 2011 and that was for Win7, not even Win8, and certainly -- NOT for Win10.  BIOS corruption is serious -- REALLY serious -- to the degree that this is probably NOT fixable, at least, without paying a LOT of money to a certified repair facility to reflash the BIOS chip in your desktop. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try: But, if these don't work (and they probably will NOT), your only recourse will be to pay someone to reflash the BIOS in your desktop.  Here is information on  HP Service Centers: Luck

A:Satellite C660-125 - Unable to access BIOS after Upgrading to Windows 10

You need to install the Toshiba System Driver for Windows 10.
However the C660 doesnt appear to be in the supported list, so you may need to go into the BIOS instead.

Hold SHIFT during shutdown to stop Windows from entering Hybrid Suspend Mode. Keep on holding SHIFT until the power LED turns off.
The F2 BIOS message only appears if the notebook does a cold boot.

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so please forgive any mistakes/oversights. I've just updated my Samsung laptop's system BIOS via their software update program, and my Nvidia GPU (GT 650m DDR3) no longer seems to work. The Nvidia control panel is still there, and it still gives me the option to select which programs use the GPU, but there is no GPU actitivity showing up. Also,I've tried playing Skyrim (which auto-detects the PC's graphics cards) , and the game no longer seems to detect the Nvidia GPU (just the Intel integrated graphics).

My laptop model is NP550PC7, with 6 gig of ram, and an i7 quad core CPU, and the OS is Window 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've tried looking in the BIOS but I can't seem to find anything related to the GPU or display options. Any help or avice is much appreciated.

Hi guys.. I already had Vista 32 bit which was preinstalled on my computer.
I am wanting to upgrade to 64 bit which I have the CD of.
But whenever I run the setup I get
"the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windoes youre running. Check your computers system information to see whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program, and then contact the software publisher".
Does anyone know how I can still the 64 bit version still?

A:Problems upgrading from 32 bit to 64 bit!

I think what it is trying to do is read the disk and use the utilities on it but because it is the 64 bit and not the 32 bit (that is installed) and it can't do it. You should still be able to install 64 bit. Just gotta put the disc in, reboot, and boot from disc when it asks.

I am not positive but I think that you need to do a fresh install to make it x64. Which means reformatting your hard drive and losing the data you don't have backed up. If thats not a problem then go ahead and do it. If it is you may want to wait to see if someone else has any input on that.

A:Upgrading my PC, will I have problems?

The RAM will work if its compatible with your board, which is should be, and default to 800 MHz. In fact most 1066 MHz RAM wont automatically run at that speed. Its going to be similar to Overclocking your CPU, increase voltage and frequency. Most motherboards have can do this lest it be some OEM hardware in a Dell or HP. Your Asrock will be fine. Now for the interesting question, where are you getting all these old parts and where are you buying theme?

I have an Intel 1.8 and a board that are a year or so old. I just got a new Intel p4 and ASUS board, and memory. I plulled out the board, cpu, and mem, and pout the new ones in. When I tried powering up, it recognizes the memory, and cpu correctly, but will not recognize any drives. I have 2 HDD, and 2 cdroms. All are about 1-2 years old, and worked perfect with the older stuff. When I go into the BIOS it shows that all the dries are there and recognizes them as what they are. It just wont while its posting. It tries to POST, then says no devices detected. ANy ideas?

It seems funny, it wont post and boot into windows, but it will detect the drives in the BIOS.

A:Upgrading problems

Does it say "No devices" or "No BOOT devices"?
The system could be looking for a particular boot device (as determined in the BIOS) and in not seeing it...,won't boot.
If IDE-0 is not in the order list...,it won't look to the hard-drive to boot into Windows.
Check your boot order in the BIOS to see what it says...

I installed a USB 2.0 card on my computer (I'm using Windows XP) and I'm not sure if it's working right.

How long would it take to transfer 2.76 Gigabytes with USB 2.0? It's taking like 15 minutes. Is that about right?

Also, the USB slots on the front of the computer no longer recognize the flash drive. What's up with that? Is it because I formatted it the wrong way, or has the USB 2.0 card usurped the front slots?

A:problems upgrading to usb 2.0

since no one answered yet, i'll throw you some figures for comparison :)

my kingston 8gb and apacer 2gb flash drive transfer that much in about 5mins. but my generic fake 8gb (really only 2gb now formated as 2gb drive) took about 25mins!

then my external ritmo usb 2.0 hdd enclosure with a seagate 250gb ide 7200rpm hdd transfer that in under 2mins.

so it sounded like you have a slow usb flash drive, but your usb pci is definately 2.0.

sorry, not sure what happens to your front usb ports.....

edit: i didn't transfer 2.76gb of data since my 2gb can't hold that. i did 1.36gb and adjusted the time.

edit 2: my 1.36gb consist of 2 avi files just under 700mb each. if your 2.76gb consist of thousands of small files it will take much longer. so it's not a fair comparison. all depends on the files you're transfering too.

I'm having problems with upgrading to a pentium IV motherboard and processor. I got the new power supply and memory to go with it, but when I put my Diamond Viper graphics card and try to boot up it don't get any video. Do I have to buy a new graphics card to be compatible with the motherboard? I bought a Asus P4S333, Intel 1.8Ghz chip with 256MB of DDRAM. Please help!!

A:Upgrading problems

Does the motherboard have integrated video onboard, some of those do. You may need to boot it without the card to get into the bios to change the vga card to agp from it;s default setting.
When you turn it on can you hear it start up, fans, come on, hard drive spin up, do the hard drive, cdrom, and floppy drive lights come on for an instant??????

I am running window millenium right now because my system crashed hard so I had to format. I did have XP installed and I am trying to re-install it.
The problem is when I put the XP cd in the drive, media player opens up and tries to play the cd. So I restart the computer and when I finally get the drive to recognize it as an app. and not music I get the error about NTFS.SYS error or something like that, it is either corrupt or missing.
Anyone ever had or heard of such a problem?

I disabled all the assoc. file types in media player.

I am upgrading from vista home premium to ultimate and i have downloaded vista ultimate x86 which should be compatible with my 32bit OS. I ran the installation/upgrade and it was fine until at one point it gives an error message saying:

“Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation.”

I restarted the computer and ran the installation again but no change...any ideas?

The link for the board does not work.
You are correct to run memtest. In addition you might want to run prime95 as well.

If there are any errors, then you have a problem. Post links to your board AND the memory you installed.

Hey, i tried to clean out my drive after i got hit by a virus and i tried to first reinstall home edition of XP.

When i tried to apply my XP Pro SP2 by upgrading, the upgrade process worked fine until it got to the Installing Windows section whereby it just sits there at 33 minutes Installing Devices and doesnt budge.

The various messages that pop up still rotate, and the blocks of green bars below are still flashing. But i have left it on for an entire day to upgrade and its still stuck at 33 minutes.

Im not even allowed to boot from the old OS.

First things first a bit of a back story I decided to build a computer for a school project having heard that it wasn t too hard and I wanted to learn a bit more about computers Anyway my mam s friend found some old 98 to Upgrading XP Problems parts lying 98 to XP Upgrading Problems around her house and gave them to me Anyway it this bundle was HDDs Once I put it together and turned it on it turned out there was a copy of Windows on it however whenever I would try to load it it would never go further than the Windows logo screen Since I had barely any money left and no copy of Windows I decided to download Ubuntu When i installed it i ended up with a dual boot system of Ubuntu and Win which started working These OSs boot with GRUB now I decided that I didn t like Ubuntu and I want to get rid of it However whenever I uninstall it I can t boot Windows I went to install an upgrade of win to XP with a copy I found The upgrade works fine until the first time the system restarts When it restarts the usual thing comes up that I have to pick whether to launch Ubuntu or Windows and I picked Windows to continue the installation However when it starts off the installation doesn t continue if I try to re-enter it justs starts the installation from the beginning I have tried copying the files to the hard drive and installing it from that but then after the restart the files are gone What I would really like is to install XP over Win and get rid of Ubuntu leaving with a single-boot system of just XP but if Ubuntu has to stay there then thats fine Sorry if that made no sesne but if anyone can offer any help it would be gladly appreciated Cheers nbsp

A:98 to XP Upgrading Problems

All this assumes you have a legitimate XP install disc and a Product Key:

enter BIOS ( Setup ) and set the first boot device as CD/ROM. Put your XP Disc in the drive and disconnect all external peripherals except the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and be sure those are not USB, or wireless. Any internal USB card should also be removed.

If you are using an upgrade version installation CD, you'll also need a CD with an older operating system ( Windows 98SE or Windows ME ) to complete the install. Also Make sure you have the 25-digit product code for the Windows XP CD.

Once you set your BIOS to boot first from cd . . when it restarts you will see a black screen with a prompt "Press any key to boot from CD" . . do that and you will be able to delete all partitions and recreate one or more, then proceed to formating and installing XP.

That message can pass quickly, so have a finger on the keyboard when you boot. This will delete all data on the drive so be sure you have your important data backed up. The prompt will appear after every reboot, but do not press any key on subsequent reboots. The setup process will continue with no action required from you.

If you do not get that message, and you have another optical drive, try the XP CD in the other drive.

This is a site that walks you thru a simulated XP installation:

These are good guides to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print one for reference during the install.

not actual problem, but it's frustrating to see that my hard disc has been filled to 300 Gb
when i checked why i saw this

I clicked it once, and pressed 'delete'

It started to count the files inside. After a while it required permissions to do that operation (i clicked ok, and it keep counting files)

Then the recycling started, after a while it required permissions to do that operation again... (i clicked ok, and it started all over)

And it made an infinite loop. Does anyone know how to remove it?

Is anyone having problems with downloads after upgrading to IE9? When I click a download I get the 'Open, Save or Save As' dialogue box. If I click open, the download seems to initiate but never completes. If I click 'Save' I get an error message 'xxx could not be downloaded'. Have tried with several different sites, allways same problem. have tried with IE8 on another machine with no problems.

I am using Nortin Internet Security but have tried turning off 'download intelligence' checker and this makes no difference.

A:Problems upgrading to windows 10

@Woodcote? It is well past the time when you might have used the Windows Upgrade "go back" feature to undo the migration to Windows 10.  Nonetheless, it appears to you at least have options and the computer is not completely dead as a result of the migration. This system does provide the listed HP Drivers for Windows 10:HP ENVY 17-j108tx Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) Drivers are an indication that the hardware is suited to the Operating System for which the drivers are provided.    Be Aware:  There may be one or two drivers NOT listed that you do need -- best to check the Driver list against the devices in your Device Manager.  For example, if you need a graphics driver and none is listed for your computer running your Operating System, things can become challenging. If the BSOD (and other) issues appear to be something you cannot resolve and your warranty covers reinstalling Windows 8 (the original Operating System?), then you must decide whether you want to take advantage of that offer.  (Most warranties do not cover upgrades, revisions, and changes to the Original OS version.) Commentary Reading minidumps or not is likely beside the point -- the warranty likely doesn't cover forensics beyond reinstalling the OS -- not an uncommon practice even if it is disappointing.  You could perhaps take the computer to someone and have the analysis completed.  I doubt it would be free, although the cost might seem reasonable depending on your level of interest in the subject. Windows 10 License Regardless of how imperfect the result, because you have migrated the Operating System to Windows 10, Microsoft has retained a copy of your Windows 10 Entitlement, that is, your Windows 10 Digital License. You can install Windows 10 again at a later date with the following caveat:If the mother board is replaced, there is likely to be trouble with the activation -- motherboard is part of the Microsoft Digital Key management.  This does not mean you can never go back to Windows 10; it does mean you may have to talk to Microsoft and explain your situation.  At the least, you may need to go through the "phone activation" - not painful, just tedious and a bunch of typing.   Assuming you have already tried stripping each of your personal programs OFF the computer and reinstalling them (because any personal program can indeed cause issues when the version of Windows is changed out from under the program),  the next thing to try is to back up and start over completely (factory reset)  -- or perhaps move boldly forward: Since you are already in trouble, so-to-speak, you might try downloading the Windows 10 Anniversary Update ISO and installing it over the top of the Windows 10 1511.  Nothing lost as long as you FIRST back up all your personal data to somewhere Other than on the computer. If it won't do so on itw own, you might be able to get the Windows Update AU version to show up in your Windows Updates: In Services > Windows Update > Right-Click on the service > set the Start to "Automatic" (as opposed to Manual). Restart the notebook and log in Settings > Windows Updates > Check for new Updates.  Good Luck. When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Fixed / Answered? When my computer stopped working while I was doing a clean install of onto a new SSD I had to send it back to where I bought it They fitted a new power supply installed on the SSD leaving my Vista HDD System disk in situ as I asked When returned the machine had got some serious damage from being dropped and it wasn't safe to power up By Problems Vista 8.1 to from Upgrading this time I was desperate to get some files from the HDD that I hadn't backed off I bought an enclosure and connected up the HDD to my wife's laptop The drive powered up OK and at first told me that I didn't have authorities to the files I wanted It offered to fix this and processed away for a while and then added the extra drives the HDD has partitions being the Vista Problems Upgrading from Vista to 8.1 system partition To my surprise although I could recognise parts of the file structure some parts seemed to be completely Problems Upgrading from Vista to 8.1 missing and other parts I didn't recognise Bearing in mind that Im only looking for data files I cant understand this Is it because using a different Op system on the laptop W doesnt allow me to see the file structure put in place by Vista but does something different with it I would appreciate any help The machine has now gone off for repair and Im hoping there will be a way for me to get at my files when its fixed If Ive left anything out please ask Thanks

A:Problems Upgrading from Vista to 8.1

You can not upgrade Vista to windows 8.1..
Although it appears that is not what you did, because you installed clean to SSD..

The drive powered up OK, and at first told me that I didn't have authorities to the files I wanted. It offered to fix this, and processed away for a while and then added the extra drives (the HDD has 3 partitions, 1 being the Vista system partition).

Not sure what you allowed to happen there.. But it is possible the vista HDD did have 3 partitions..

But not sure what you mean - by file structure.. Could you post a pic of what you are looking at..

I tried to upgrade my laptop which is running Vista Home Premium with SP1 using Windows automatic update notification. First it seemed that update is installing for but when it was about to be finished (100% complete was displayed) it said that update cannot be completed and all changes were reverted. This actually caused that a number of settings were messed up and some programs are not working properly anymore.

How can I find out what caused SP1 not to install properly and are there known issues which one should observe with the update.

Ive been working on selecting a video card and had posted a recent thread about this.

While shopping around for a card it has become clear that I needed more power.

I was just advised by an HP online tech cunsaltant that I may have problems with existing components if I upgrade to a different/stronger power supply. This seems odd to me. How can a good quality PSU cause any damage to components?

The rep advised me to get a Micro ATX PSU form factor, I havent heard of this but apparently this is a brand or a particular "form factor".

Also either the Micro ATX doesnt provide over 300w or I need to stay under 300w, he couldnt explian.

Upgrading this system is becoming very difficult, I should have tried to build one.

I have XP Home on my computer now and have an upgrade to XP Pro but receive an error.

A box pops up and says ............

Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered.

Is there anyway around this and why am I getting this message when going from XP Home to XP Pro?

Any help and thoughts are appreciated!!

A:Upgrading problems from XP Home to XP Pro

Is your upgrade a full legal version of Windows XP Pro? It may be that your current installation has all the updates and the upgrade may not have those updates, although I don't really think that that would give you that error message.
