.... but I didn't touch it.
My d:\ is not empty - it is almost 80% full but when i click on it there are no files. Tried - to the extent of my knowledge - to see if the files are hidden but didn't reach anywhere. Tried a restore point but that didnt work either. Please help
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Recovery Manager has hiccups sometimes...
Try re-booting and entering at boot.
If that fails you can order the Recovery Media from HP for a reasonable price.
Every 10 seconds audio manager will set the volume on my mic to 0 and mute it I have already tried to uninstall it and reinstall it but no result.
It may be malware but I am not sure as of yet. Would really appreciate help right now.
Problem Solved, As suspected it was malware. To fix this launch task manager, then go to start up, go through the list if something dosn't have a icon or dosn't seem to fit in right click and open its file location. If you are definite that it is malware disable it, restart go to the file location and delete all the files.
I was updating my graphics card drivers for my graphic card PNY GEFORCE GTX 660 and went to device manager, I used ?automatically search for new driver? and a dialog box appeared "Windows has determined that the driver is up to date".
Yet, I went to Nvidia website and did a driver update. I checked again Device manager for my display adapter and the new driver was TWO MONTHS NEWER.
I wonder why that happens.

Need more details please ask...
Looking for advice, thanks
Sounds like the battery is possibly faulty. Have you tried removing it, then locking it back into position?
Hey, I'm a new member here with a problem!
I have a pair of Skullcandy Crushers with an arguably great built-in mic that turn on with a press of a button. However I built a new computer a few days ago and installed the latest version of the ASUS Realtek HD Audio manager, and while the audio on the headphones work, the mic refuses to work and isn't even recognized on programs like Skype and Hangouts.
I have tried the front two ports and tinkered with the settings and nothing has worked as of now, please help ASAP!
Yeah thats because Skullcandys aren't really built for computers, just iPhone & Android. I had the same issue with my Skullcandy headphones and decided to buy a legit for PC headset. Sorry you spent your money on them!
I had a new PC so I thought I would do a recovery disk on a separate partition of my parent's disk. Turns out windows wipes out everything regardless of partition when it does that. So now lifelong memories are gone and I'm freaking out! I used EaseUS to make different partitions which were deleted. After I found that the partition I chose stayed the same size but was renamed RECOVERY and it had the recovery data in it. However the rest was "unused" and so I dragged the RECOVERY to make full use of the disk and then I started scanning it deeply with hard drive recovery software. I am now through scanning with my 2nd program now (1st one didn't give me the files I needed) and I'm using RecoverMyFiles. The problem is I'm not really getting back any of the files I had deleted by windows, but I get some stupid windows files which were probably deleted in the recovery process!! PLEASE help me!!! I am desperate. Future hanging in balance thank you.
There are quite a few programs you could try, I have had most success with Recuva by Piriform, but recently this program was said to be excellent by a user,
Obviously it's worthwhile trying both of them.
Hello.I really need help.
I own a GEFORCE GTX 550 Ti.
Its fan gone broke so I bought a new one.
When I removing the stuck screw of my GraphicCard, I accidentally hit and remove two tiny parts which I can't name.
So I ReAttach the removed component via taping it with ElectricTape.
I lost the other one so I get something like that from other broken GraphicCard and tape it with ElectricTape.
I test the GraphicCard without fan yet, the result, it turns ON, the PC reads the GraphicCard but restarts when the MOBO's name appears.
I can't attach the fan yet because it was under warranty and I wanna return it if my GraphicCard is broken due of this matter.
***Now the problem is, Do my beloved GEFORCE GTX 550 Ti will still work or it is permanently broken due of this two tiny component?***
I attach a photo regarding "that" two tiny parts. It's sad. Please Help.
You might as well try installing the new fan because from your description of what you did you already voided the warranty. My guess is that those tiny pieces have a function otherwise they wouldn't be there in the first place. If your graphics card doesn't work anymore, you're just going to have to buy a new one.
I had a drive go south on me, looks like the MBR, MFT, and the backups for them got trashed on the drive after a reboot. The drive itself still is fully operational, and my usual go to software, ZAR, unfortunately is not doing the trick. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to try?
I've used a program called testdisk to repair a messed up MFT, it's free.
Hey there, this might sound crazy. But as I was partitioning my micro sd card. I decided to remove the partition. And when I did that. It is now undetectable by my laptop or any laptop for thaf matter but I formatted the card on my phone, and it works for my phone. But not my laptop. I am trying to partition the sd card because I am using it to store files from my internal rooted phones memory to the sd card internals. I really need help badly! Is there any way you can help?
My bother had deleted my laptop partition files and folders when attempting to extend my C partition. All my stored partition movies were lost and could not be found in Recycle Bin. Do you know where these partition videos are? I really want to view these videos again. What can I do to rescue them? Thank you for any advice!
Sorry to hear you are experiencing such an issue.
Your data is stilll there somewhere as long as you don't overwrite it. If you save new data, it would rewrite your previous files.
I did some research for you and I found a threat that you might find helpful:
I really hope this works for you!
As you can see from the screenshot, somehow I have acquired a partition of unallocated space of approx 195 GB...I want to delete this partition, adding the extra GB to my main, OS:C partition, but I cannot figure out how to do it...Can someone help? Thanks a lot,
Steve in Kansas
It is already deleted, that is why you can't.
What you can do is grow your C partition into that space (forget whether it is called merge or grow or expand).
I have a sony SD Card 16gb class 4 card. I did use the card for almost 3 months, when I tried to use it now, I am not able to access the card,
I tried recovery softwares like recova etc to recover the file, but I was not able to recover even a single byte.
I have many importants files in the CARD, PLEASE HELP ME...,.
I think >>this thread<< could help you out . He seems to have the same problem.
I'm trying to partition my hard drive, when I click shrink, it takes me to the shrinking window and it says:
Total size before shrink: 704749 MB
Size available to shrink: 7185 MB
Enter the amount of space to shrink: 7185 MB
Total size after shrink: 697564 MB
I don't understand how I have so much space, but I can only shrink it 7185. It is an NTFS.
Here's some screenshots
Some files that are read only are preventing you from shrinking beyond a certain point while those files are open.
My suggestion would be to use partitioning software that is bootable. Boot to the disk and shrink your partition without windows running.
There are several freeware apps available to select from. The one I use is Partition Wizard Boot CD.
After updating the Windows XP to Windows 7, my computer becomes really slow and recently often receives a low disk space message. And there is only 3GB of free space left on my system partition. So, I think it is the time to extend my system partition space. But, I am not so familiar about the partition expanding things and don?t know what to do. Do you have any idea for me? Please, give me some suggestions! Thanks!
Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management, so we can better understand what you are dealing with?
My laptop had headphones plugged in because I was watching a film but while I was in another room my laptop was knocked onto the floor around - ft drop change mic to a HD audio headphones Realtek port? port a manager, landing on the headphones jack the wire is fine but the ports completely broken I can see cracks and its loose and everything The laptop has Realtek HD audio manager and in my experience of this program on other desktops I ve had I was able to change Realtek HD audio manager, change a mic port to a headphones port? what port does what My laptop only has a headphones port and Realtek HD audio manager, change a mic port to a headphones port? a mic port and I would like to see if I can switch the mic port to be the headphones port because I never use an external mic however in Realteks audio manager I can t find out how to do this In pictures I ve seen on the internet there is a quot Device Advanced Settings quot button as seen in this picture http www vistax com attachments ealtek-hd-audio-driver-version-hd manager jpg but my program doesn t have this Do I need to download a newer version of the software or is it just not possible to change my mic port to be my headphone port I dont mind if I have to use third party software I just want it to tide me over till I can get it sent away Thanks for suggestions greatly appretiated nbsp
I doubt very much if this will be possible. The mic and headphone ports are wired directly to the Audio section of the motherboard, there connections cannot be altered.
Your best bet is to get the damaged port repaired.
My internal HDD failed due to a sudden power outage. I can hear beeping sounds like the motor is trying to spin the drive up and failing to do so. This drive contains all my important data ( documents, photos and videos), I'm thinking of taking it to a data recovery center, How much would it cost me for a data recovery service? I've been recommended to WeRecoverData data recovery labs by an IT person, Anyone have experience with them? Any help advice? Thanks in advance.
Likely thousands. Hopefully in the future you will make backups of important data.
If it was killed by the power outage, you can probably fix it yourself by purchasing the exact same drive on ebay or wherever and swap the PCB.
What command do I type in Command Prompt if I want to use Last Known Good configuration
Boot into Safe Mode (F8), that's where the option is located
Hi every one this is my first thread and I'm having a problem with my laptop so plz help me

Not sure here but you may have a virus. Have you tried running a virus scan?
Yesterday, I started a download and kept the pc on with my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex External HDD 1TB plugged in. After I woke up I realized that there was a power cut and the computer went off unexpectadly (I had no UPS or any backup system). And, I found that my Ext HDD was not seen in my computer anymore (It was working perfectly until before I went to bed).
In device manager, under 'Disks' it shows 'GoFlex Hard Disk', but in BIOS or Disk Manager there is no sign of this HDD.
I really need the data in the HDD badly. Please help me recover it.
P.S. I read somewhere that keeping the HDD in freezer might help and give a little more time. Is that true? Worth the risk?
Power outage probably killed something in the enclosure or its PSU. The drive in the enclosure is probably fine. I would remove the drive from the enclosure and put it in a dock or install it in a desktop computer before considering freezing it. Freezing is usually reserved for click of death drives, and a last ditch effort.
Friends and neighbors, last March I had such a system crash that, due to the number of bad HD sectors, I had to replace the HD. The HD with my various tools was not even detectable. My system ran Windows 7 64-Bit and IE9. The computer is an MSI notebook. Anyway, while doing some searching to diagnose another problem, I registered for this site after seeing Puppy Linux, whose page I saved to my Favorites. Having kept the old HD, in case I could salvage any data, is it possible for me to use Puppy Linux on that old HD? Thanks. Your answers will be a great help.
Hey Louis. We don't know how bad the drive is, but you can try putting the drive in a USB enclosure, formatting it, then install Puppy Linux on it, since apparently Puppy Linux doesn't require a lot of space and can also be run from RAM according to the Wikipedia link.
I have an external hard disk of Samsung 650GB which got damaged when I was transferring some files to my pc through it. Now when I connect to any PC or Laptop it shows the safely remove icon but there is no letter assigned to it and also doesn't show up in My Computer though it can be seen in Disk Management.
I tried Mini Tool Partition Wizard but when I create a new partition it stops at 90%. I tried wiping out the partition but to no avail.
Is there any solution for it??? Please help.
I would check the manufacturers site for a windows utility to low level format it. If you cannot find a utility to do that on manufacturer's site, then try this: http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ to wipe the drive. WARNING!! this will destroy all data on the selected hard drive!! be very careful when selecting a drive to wipe that you don't inadvertently select the wrong disk. After a low level format, unplug the drive, plug back in, windows should detect as a new, virgin, drive and it'll prompt you to format it. Format it and hopefully everything will be fine from here on out for you.
Post back, Hope this helps!!
HDD 1 tb Seagate hardisk not working,is not visible in the laptop, can b seen in device manager for 1min then gets disconnected automatically and the light on the hard disk starts blinking
If the system worked before with this drive, I would say the drive is bad.

Hi, so my integrated webcam isn't showing up and I'm trying to confirm whether it's died or not. I know the first step is to go to the manufacture's website, but as an Asus user I wasn't able to find anything to help me solve this problem asides from this model knowledge base.
Here's my Device Manager Data link below (first time using mediafire so let me know if it works)
Windows 7 x64
Thanks so much!
Up until days ago my laptop was working fine Then all of a sudden while transferring files to external hard drive it just froze and that was pretty much the end of it It got to the point where this would keep happening and I know help recovery Need data with it s not good but I ended up just forcing the computer to shut down by pressing the power Need help with data recovery button then the computer wouldn t even boot up I ended up just buying a new laptop btw the external hard drive from my old laptop works fine I bought a hard drive enclosure for the old hard drive from my old laptop to recover some data the hard drive shows up as LOCAL DISK on the new computer but it freezes up when I try to access it everything else on the new computer working fine and can t even eject it Whenever I try to do something with the old hard drive it just takes a long time or there s no response or it freezes It even prevents my new computer from booting up or shutting down Is it hopeless to retrieve some data from this drive or is it a lost cause Really appreciate any help Thanks nbsp
The drive may have some sort of malware on it. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and run a custom scan on the drive. If it comes up clear, it may have errors. We will proceed from there after you have completed the scan. Best of luck.
Hello Today my WD Raptor decided to die all of a sudden while using my computer it just froze up blue screen on me and reboot then keeps looping I do regular backups so I have quot most quot of my data on my external drives but this happened so suddenly that I have some recent excel files and pictures that are not on my last backup and I would really like to recover those files I run DFT and result was some sector logical failure I remove the drive installed on another computer and I can see the drive but every time I double click on it I got the message quot You need to format the disk in drive D before you can use died, data Raptor need recovery WD it quot and sometimes when I click on the drive I got quot D is not accessible Data error cyclic redundancy check quot Disk management sees the drive as quot Active Primary Partition quot but still can t open it from there I haven t format it yet but I wonder if there is a way to access it somehow to retrieve the data or the only way is WD Raptor died, need data recovery to format it to access it and then use some software to recover the files Suggestions opinions what do you guys think what options do I have Thanks in advance for all the input nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/wd-raptor-died-need-data-recovery.191410/

Tonight I watched a movie, turned PC off, went to sleep, now when I woke up and turned the PC on, there was no D: parition where all my files are...Looked up at Event Viewer to see if anyone was using PC after me, and seems like nobody was on it. The last thing I installed was Parition Magic which now made me suspicios that it is the cause of this chaos. It failed to start because of some drive letters error 117. How the hell can it possibly wipe my D: partition without me knowing it?
Right-click "Computer" on desktop (or Start Menu) and select "Manage", then click on "Disk Management'. once the disk management service starts, you should be able to see the drive, and see if Partition Magic somehow changed your drive letter to one already in use or allotted to a thumb drive in the past (making it invisible in Windows explorer) or whatever. If so, you should then be able to change the drive letter to make it show up (by right-clicking the drive and selecting the option from the drop-down menu).
My laptop:HP Pavilion g-series, W7, 500HDD, 4GB RAM, i5.
Problem: the drives are like this>222gb, 108gb and 102gb.
My os is in the 222gb drive and I'm not comfortable using the drive with the os in it.a lot of space is wasted here.
I have tried to shrink it but it shows that only some 450mb can be shrinked.
how do it get back this lost space?
Provided you have some free space on that partition you should be able to shrink it. What software are you using? Perhaps you should give gParted a try. Boot off a gParted CD or USB and shrink it outside the OS. If you have some time, it probably wouldn't hurt to defragment the partition you are shrinking first.
I was installing new Windows 7. I didn't touch partition F:\ at all! But there was a problem in installing Windows, after everything got compleated Windows wasn't proceeding from its logo and was getting restarted after blinking a Blue Scereen!
then I installed windows through Bootable USB everything worked that wasn't by DVD but now!

Windows wasn't doing anything after that it was just stuck there So I restarted it!
Now! When I try to open this partition it shows:
Also It wasn't boot-able!
I just want to fix this partition! I tried "GetDataBack for NTFS" it didn't work as all videos It recovered wasn't working
Hope this is the right forum for this topic I have acquired an NTFS I an with How resize GParted Live? partition do old Pentium laptop It has a GB HDD installed all one NTFS partition and How do I resize an NTFS partition with GParted Live? about GB of software I want to clone the drive on to a GB keeping the existing software so that I can use the GB elsewhere but first I need to resize the C partition down to below GB I have downloaded gparted-live- - and burnt it to a CD but it is unable to resize an NTFS partition It says it needs ntfsprogs ntfs- g The trouble is that even if I downloaded ntfsprogs I would not know what to do with it Presumably it has to be on the CD but to get there it would have to be included in the iso file before How do I resize an NTFS partition with GParted Live? I burned it I am a total Linux ignoramus and if this involves the sort of operation I suspect it is an order of magnitude beyond my IT skills Can anyone give me some idea of what I would have to do Thanks Steve nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/how-do-i-resize-an-ntfs-partition-with-gparted-live.189402/
Got a customer that came in with a External HDD To cut a long story short basically what is going on is that recovery 2.5" HDD Windows doesn t recognize the drive being there under Computer but under Disk Management the drive is there I ve taken the drive out of its enclosure and directly input the SATA connector to the Mobo but under Disk Management its not assigned a letter and the name is actually blank I ve already tried to assign it a letter but it unfortunately doesn t allow me to do that 2.5" HDD recovery So to recap Disk Management see s it but Computer doesn t So what I have done so far to try to fix this problem is first I ran Spinrite ran it at level and it couldn t fix the issue Second I have tried the freezer trick none of those worked Now the drive isn 2.5" HDD recovery t making any obvious sounds no clicking or whirling sounds Sounds like a functioning drive and spins up just fine Id try to do a CheckDisk but id need to be able to assign it a letter to command chkdsk to fix volumes F amp R on that drive to work If anybody has any work around or a temporary hotfix for me id appreciate it I only need it to work once to be able to transfer files over onto my Tech HDD nbsp
Nevermind, after hours upon hours of grueling testing and troubleshooting I found that the problem was that it was a HDD for a mac/linux. I had to go into unbuntu and mess with Nautilus to be able to get the permissions to access the drives folders.
Hello Guys. I really need you guys help. I had been using my portable external drive for about a year. as of today all in the sudden my computer doesn't read it anymore. I tried to go to Disk Management to change the disk path. However it doesn't work. Please help!
Confirm the portable hard drive status in Disk Management like RAW, unrecognized etc. please.
Try Recuva from piriform to recover your hard drive data, if its recoverable. Ask for replacement from your manufacturer if its still in warranty period.
HOpe it helps!!a
My computer running Windows Ultimate -bit can no longer access my Western Digital Caviar quot Black quot TB hard drive that s connected but I suspect my data to still be in there so I wonder what data recorvery tools people have used and recommend This is one of the additional drives to my operating system C drive It has been formatted as NTFS and been working fine for several months until with recommendations Data format, from drive please lost recovery software a week ago Now it appears as the E drive on Data recovery from drive with lost format, software recommendations please My Computer as originally configured but the volume label is now blank I used to have that named as quot Media quot When I double-click on it to Data recovery from drive with lost format, software recommendations please enter the drive I get the Data recovery from drive with lost format, software recommendations please error message quot E is not accessible The parameter is incorrect quot In Computer Management -- gt Storage -- gt Disk Management the drive appears but it s File System is now indicated as RAW rather than NTFS I have tried using Active Partition Recovery and that successfully lists my drive with the original label name quot Media quot and as NTFS and also lists the folders located at the root of the drive which is why I suspect my data to still be in there and recoverable However when I use this tool to do a full scan of my disk it freezes after scanning MB There are tools out there with varying reliability so whch ones do people here recommend another tool I trired I forget its name was scanning my disk but prediced days to go over the entire TB so that s out of the question I have been told to use a tool that can recover files onto a separate disk rather then try to repair the original disk and risk losing more of the original data Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks nbsp
Oh crap. Something like this happened recently to me when I had backed up some data to an USB thumb drive. It worked fine for awhile, then some weeks later, my PC just couldn't read it anymore (kept saying "disk in drive needs to be reformatted/etc"...and the properties for the drive also showed it as RAW format instead of FAT32 like it would have been usually).
I think the issue is drive corruption, which seems to be fairly common with external devices like USB drives, but odd in the case of an internal drive. The remedy for me was to try to access it from a different system, which was easy since being a USB stick I could try it elsewhere easily. If you can use another system to access the drive, preferably a Linux/Ubuntu based one; it is likely your best bet to recoup the data before its lost permanently. An external HDD kit would be ideal, and they are quite cheap also.
Hope this helps!
Hi all Please can someone help We own a Toshiba Satalite laptop with gb HD Today whilst trying to download a file I had a warning message saying no disc space left Confused by this I looked at the computer spec to notice drives C amp D I am no IT expert but think I m correct its actually only I disc but partitioned into drives hence giving me C D drives Here s where I am lost though The C drive is almost full yet the D drive has only the original HDD recovery made when we st had the a second Toshiba my hard does Why drive Satellite have partition? laptop amp is almost empty odd gb left Why is nothing on the D drive and to free up space on the C drive how can I transfer various items from C to D Do I simply copy - paste then delete from C or is it Why does my Toshiba Satellite hard drive have a second partition? more complicated Also if I wanted to download straight to the D drive is this possible amp if so how is this carried out Hope some of you don t think the above is a bit dumb to ask but I really don t know what to look for and how to solve our usage problem other than asking for your help Many thanks in advance Mark from Hereford Uk nbsp
Honestly I'm kind of confused, but I'll try anyways... So you're 500GB HD is partitioned into 2 240GB partitions, correct? If this is the case the 1st one that is full is the partition where windows is located on, and is set to automatically save you're files to that partition. What you can do is move you're large files onto the D partition to make use of that space.
It can be a simple as copy/pasting you're files into that drive, or you can also set it to route anything saved to a certain file to the 2nd partition. For example, my "Downloads" folder automatically saves to my Data partition on my PC. Do do this simply go to whatever file it happens to be, right-click, properties, location, and from there click move and choose the 2nd partition. Hope this helps.
I bought a new 240GB Kingston SSD. Going to migrate my OS (Win 7 Pro) to it, but should I partition it first? I've Googled several opinions on this, and no one has been able to provide a consistent answer. 50% of the people say don't do it - doesn't make any difference on an SSD and the other 50% say go for it, keep your OS files separate from data files.
Any SSD experts out there or someone with experience have an opinion to offer?
I can't speak much on SSD's and their performance in relation to partitions, but I will say that having your OS on a separate partition from the rest of your data is pretty handy universally. I just ran into an issue where I had to reformat an HDD due to user error. Luckily I had my OS partition separate from the rest of my data. All I had to do was format that one partition, reinstall Windows 7, and be on my way like nothing ever happened. My data was still there safe and sound on 2 other partitions.
Win XP defragger is having a hard time defragging external USB 2TB drive because of the back up .iso image files on it. What do you think about the cause of this problem and possible solutions? Diskeeper?
I just realized the actual file type causing this issue is .mrimg , a back up image file created by Macrium Reflect. Some of the big .iso files I have seem to stress the defragger, but at least they're not completely crashing XP and the drive. I end up having to unplug the drive to get XP responding again, even to reboot. I'm pretty convinced it's the .mrinmg file. Not sure if I should create a separate partition just for them, or get a better defragger.
Good afternoon, I have one harddrive that used to be an external sata drive. It's a 250GB. My laptop crashed recently and I used this harddrive to get my laptop to work. I originally had two partitions one 14GB the other 230GB. The problem Im having is that when I try to shrink the second partition (250GB) it tells me that I can only shrink 5MB and I have about 90 GB free. Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you in advance!
I'd say it's a limitation of the Windows Disk Management Partitioning software. Grab a 3rd party partitioning program: Acronis Disk Director, or Gparted. what has to occur is data on the larger partition has to be moved toward the end of the drive. Then the extra space at the beginning of the larger partition can be allocated to the 14GB partition at the end. does that make sense? Hope this helps!
I have Windows XP SP that would not boot to the desktop on a Normal boot The system has SATA HDD amp SATA DVD-RW partition HDD XP -- Windows lost data problem on Red SATA ports on the Motherboard amp Black SATA port on the mother board I apologize but sadly I do NOT remember if the DVD drive or one of the HDD was in the Black SATA port I m not REALLY sure I Windows XP HDD partition problem -- data lost understand the difference but The system would boot up almost to the desktop so I was able to boot up in Safe Mode Once I could get to the desktop I looked at the System log in Event Viewer amp it showed that the controller was reporting drive errors on Hard Drive NOT the boot drive It was happening so much that it was virtually filling the Event Viewer amp making it Windows XP HDD partition problem -- data lost hard to see anything else in there amp kept the system from being able to boot to the desktop It never made it to where it said Windows was loading my personal settings I have never seen a NON-boot drive keep an XP system from being able to boot up Once I made it to where I could see the Event Viewer messages I shut the system down amp disconnected the quot bad quot drive amp restarted the system It then booted up fine but when I looked at the event Viewer is STILL showed Hard Drive errors I thought that it might be a bad cable so I shut the system down again amp connected the SATA cable that was connect to Hard Drive amp moved exchanged it with the one on Hard Drive amp booted the system I looked in the Event Viewer amp it was STILL showing Hard Drive errors so I opened quot Disk Management quot amp it thought the hard drive that I took out was still in the system At this point it was actually in another room Disk Management showed hard drive errors so I right clicked on the drive that wasn t even IN the system amp chose quot Delete Partition quot amp that made the drive errors stop Remember THAT hard drive was NOT in the system at the time I rebooted the system amp looked in Drive Management amp it reported quot Drive Missing quot When I looked in Event Viewer it STILL had Hard Drive errors NOW I suspect that this is REALLY a power issue amp NOT a hard drive or controller problem My power supply has leads Has SATA type amp IDE type type power connector Has SATA type Connectors Has IDE type amp Floppy type power connector I shut the system down again put the quot bad quot drive in the system disconnected all of the SATA cables amp power cables Plugged the HDD in the Red SATA ports left the DVD uplugged moved the power cables Of course I figured that since there where SATA power connectors on one lead it would be OK to plug in hard drives Keep in mind that this system has been running this way for years with showing this problem although now that I think about it the boot drive has failed times BUT they were all Seagate GB drives amp I have had those fail in several other systems FAR more often than the Hitatchi or Samsung However the WD drives have failed just as often as the Seagate Since I now suspected that this was a power problem I decided to plug in only of the HDD in the SATA power lead amp plugged the remaining HDD in the SATA power lead that the DVD was using amp I left the DVD disconnected I booted the system NOW my question Problem The drive that I took out of the system thinking it was bad now has NO partition When I deleted the partition on the HDD even though it was NOT in the system at the time that partitions are gone I have not done anything else to the drive since I found this problem so does ANYONE have ANY idea what I might be able to do to bring the partitions amp my TB of data back In UNIX there are format commands commands that can bring back files because they re not REALLY gone the allocation table is just not looking in the right place or something I realize this was a L-O-N-G amp Boring story but I had to go through the whole thing to explain the problem amp hopefully get a solution Thank you ... I have Toshiba Laptop it contains 320GB harddisk and there is not partition in it.. I can see only c drive. I want to make partition without formatting harddisk.. is there any way to achieve this target..
kindly help me experts...
You can using something like GParted. Download and burn the iso to a CD, then boot your laptop using it. Do backup important files before you partition your hard drive, just in case.
when i formatted my laptop using win7 DVD i have deleted all partitions and created a new ones but beside the 100 MB ,partition 1, there was 128 msr(reserved) partition appeared and the windows loader was not accepted even it worked on different laptops and pc's
what is the problem
Can you explain this a bit clearer?

Take a look at this:
I have an ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001PXD preloaded with Windows 7 Starter. I'm thinking it had an Aleureon(sp?) in the MBR, but I did some things to it a couple months ago, and Windows is booting up. It says it is connecting to the network in my house as "public", but won't get on the internet. It won't let me change the classification to "home". When I did whatever I did (can't remember what), It created a new partition (E) for recovery files. I want the laptop back in it's factory state with the recovery files in D like they're supposed to be. There is no CD or DVD drive as it is only a small laptop, but I may be able to transfer files/programs from my main desktop to it if it is indeed connected to the network. Thanks in advance, Bec
You can buy or borrow an external USB CD/DVD drive, to do the job for you
Hello, so... the question is this:
Can I make a partition of my laptops' HDD work as an external drive.
So that when I connect a USB cable to my laptop, then connect the other end of the USB cable to another PC/laptop this other PC/laptop than thinks that an external HDD is connected to it...
I'm assuming I would need some sort of software to specify which partition I want to be recognized as the external HDD and then possibly specify which USB port to use...?
Or not necessarily a partition, just any specific folder would work as well...
So... help... please... So far I haven't found any answers googling.
Not clear on your problem;
When I connect a USB tumbdrive to my Laptop it shows up as a regular Mapped Drive.
In fact, when I take it elsewhere, that happens also.
It is not related to the HDD on the laptop at all (is that what you're after; making the USB actually mirror datafrom your HDD?)
I currently have a Lenovo laptop and have had it for 2 and a half years. The battery has always been pretty bad and last about 3 minutes unplugged. The hard drive is a temperamental one from an old laptop as the original broke for no apparent reason, probably didn't help I was constantly having to rebuild it too. I know it is stupid but when I got this laptop I was young and naive and didn't realise how essential recovery disks are.
I realise to replace all of these would be quite expensive so am wondering whether it is worth just buying a new laptop?
We need more information to comment.
There are at least 7 levels of Lenovo laptop... Is this a T-series... or just what is it? model and type.
In general, Lenovo laptops are among the most reliable...
This is not a good time to buy hard drives, due to the market over-adjusting to the hard drive factories under water in Thailand.
Batteries, good ones, can be found for $35 to $45
But you can get a 90 GB SATA hard drive for $90 or less.
Tell us the hard drive brand and size, the amount of memory installed.
All in all, we can rebuild a decent Lenovo for $140... and that is a lot less expensive than a new laptop. But a shop would have to charge you $205 or more.
A cheap laptop might cost you $500 to $600, but a good laptop could cost you $1200 to $1800. For long term reliability, I would want to invest at least $1000 to $1500
Tell us more so we can best advise you.
So this is my problem:
I have a 500GB Maxtor Hard disk, and I went to install windows xp, but during the installation i saw that it was split into different partitions. I have no idea why but i deleted one of them. Now i think the entire hard disk is screwed up. When i connected it to my laptop using a SATA docking station, under disk management it gives me my C drive which is disk 0 and it gives me the Maxtor hard disk which is disk 1. But disk 1 is split into 100mb, 60Gb and 405.66 GB with the 405.66 being unallocated. What should i do to make it 1 500GB harddisk.
Assuming the disk does not contain an operating system, or any personal data you need, just remove the partitions, so the whole disk is unallocated, then create a simple partition the entire size of the disk e.g. 465GB in size.
I just got a brand new Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system for my laptop.
These speakers have amazing ratings, and my friends who have had them before said the ones they had sounded amazing for them, and yet they, like me, notice the following problem in mine.
The bass is great, but for some reason my system seems too bassy. Like I know I can turn down the subwoofer, but it's as if all the low/bassy sounds are always drowning out the higher/vocals, which always seem to be a bit dulled down.
I have a Lenovo Y560p laptop with Realtek HD Audio. I was thinking perhaps I have this sound problem because it doesn't let me select 2.1 for my settings, and it's stuck on "stereo". I've tried downloading and installing drivers from Realtek's website.
hi - i was just playing music on my dell latitude e4300 via bluetooth to a belkin bluetooth receiver connected to stereo.
somehow the connection got dropped - during a phone call on a land line. may be irrelevant.
now, i cannot get bluetooth connection back. there is no bluetooth icon in the system tray.
i cannot find 'bluetooth' devices in start>control panel> devices
--i have 2, and both ought to be there.
i unplugged bluetooth receiver, and had win 7 search for devices to add - no luck.
sure, i can reboot, and everything will probably come back.
but i am hoping for a better answer. i don't want to have to reboot every time the bluetooth connection gets lost.
i searched the web for a little, but only found unrelated posts, or posts with no answer. THANKS!
bluetooth light/icon on laptop, not screen is on; no bt
ok, i rebooted, thinking the bluetooth icon would again be in system tray, with the red in the middle, showing i have bluetooth capability, but that sound is not currently being directed to bluetooth.
the dell laptop does have bluetooth icon illuminated on the laptop, just above the function keys - not on the screen at all / not in sys tray.
the bluetooth receiver is on, is working.
'add a device' is not finding this bt thingie.
I've got a friend whose wife is ready to kill. The CD of wedding photo's is currently in three pieces and not backed up. Any leads where he can get at least some of the data recovered? At this point in time he's almost "money no object"...
...any leads would be appreciated,
I've never looked into this before. I'd imagine there isn't much that can be done. CDs and DVDs have a short life in data storage terms and really should not be relied on as a permanent storage media for important data. There seem to be a few companies out there that offer data recovery from damaged CDs, but this is usually from scratched rather than broken into pieces disks.
hi anyone who can help me I just have a bios update failed because my computer hangs and as I reboot nothing appears and i guess my bios is corrupt how can I recover my bios pls help

I'm considering buying a new SSD, because I could always use faster speed to boot up Windows and load programs and such. I'd like to keep my old OS partition intact but I'm not sure what kind of performance hit would I suffer from cloning my partition to SSD?
Is it worth getting an SSD in light of this or is it just better to start over fresh?
My Specs are:
Acer Aspire x3200 w/ AMD Phenom X3 (TripleCore) 8400 2.1 GHz (Stock speed & HS)
4 GB G∑Skill DDR2 800 PC2-6400
Onboard NVidia GeForce 8200/9200
Asus Xonar DX
WD 500GB (30 GB OS partition w/ 9 GBs free space)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Build 7600
What you are proposing should be fine but the partition you are cloning must be smaller than the capacity of the SSD, the increased speed of the SSD should be noticeable and you won't get a performance hit from cloning the drive.
Acronis True Image is excellent software to use for this and it can shrink the partition you are cloning to make it fit on the SSD, obviously with some limitations.
Hi Had a power cut yesterday and when the PC rebooted Windows XP is not say Partition not seeing no: says recoverers partition Windows Windows XP yes, properly recognizing one of the partitions on one of the drives In Explorer it gives quot The disk in drive H is not formatted quot and in the Disc Management section of Computer Management it says the partition is active and healthy but gives no file system should be NTFS So I think Partition recoverers say yes, Windows XP says no: Windows not seeing partition the partition table Partition recoverers say yes, Windows XP says no: Windows not seeing partition got corrupted or similar I ve now tried both Testdisk and EaseUS and they both have no trouble identifying the partition the file system and the files the size and label etc etc etc So much so that neither give the option of recovery as it seems neither thinks there is anything to recover And yet Windows XP still refuses to see anything but an unformatted partition I m stuck in no mans land between the OS which is having a problem and Partition recoverers say yes, Windows XP says no: Windows not seeing partition the fixers which don t think there is Now what Thanks Nick nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/partition-recoverers-say-yes-windows-xp-says-no-windows-not-seeing-partition.171083/
Hi I have two USB flash drives one is an old Kingston Data Traveler and my new one is a Corsair Flash Voyager They both have the same problem When they are formatted in FAT I can safely remove them through Windows XP s quot Safely Remove Hardware quot program However when they are formatted in NTFS the program says that I cannot remove the USB drive because it is still being used but if I immediately ask the program to remove it again it will So I can remove the drives but it just never works the first time Also it s not true that there s something else still using the drive I even used Process Explorer to make sure Like I said the problem only occurs when the drives are formatted in NTFS Finally if removed safely NTFS when drive cannot flash USB be formatted in I right-click on the USB drive in My Computer and USB flash drive cannot be safely removed when formatted in NTFS eject it before using the quot Safely Remove Hardware quot program it will work That is just time consuming though and I don t know if it s safe to eject the USB drive like that Does anyone USB flash drive cannot be safely removed when formatted in NTFS know a solution to this Thanks for reading nbsp
Are you using Windows Media Player?
I have a WD external USB 2.0 HD. Yesterday, there was a message on screen asking to update driver or something. I ignored it. Now, the HD is gone. It is not under device manager/disk drives. Everything under universal serial bus controllers works properly.
I downloaded HDD Scan and ran it. It did not find the drive. What can I do now?
1. Uninstall your USB Mass Storage Device then Scan for Hardware Changes.
2. Clear your Mountpoint. You can use Autorun Protector (req .NET2.0) or delete all Mountpoints2 entries in regedit
3. Use DriveCleanup (posted by LookinAround)
Here s the scoop A friend of mine was running XP sp and his system started getting very slow and would not run properly I ran malwarebytes and found File recovery several errors and corrected System still wouldn t function right Spent several File recovery hours trying various things with no luck Decided to offload his files and reinstall xp We managed to get his documents offloaded but didn t have enough media for his photos I removed hard drive and used my hardware connection package to hook it up to a usb port on my system The drive did show up and I started to copy his photos Get ready here it comes he has g of photos from years worth of saving on system without backing them up My system has enough space to copy but about g into copy my system started to give File recovery all kinds of errors that my avg WD elements etc weren t working I canceled the copy and deleted the photos from my system did a safe remove of the drive ran a restore from a previous restore point for my system All is well in the land of joeretired Now here s where the problem comes in When I reconnected the drive it no longer shows up with a letter assigned to it so I can access the drive I checked quot My Computer quot and it s not there Checked Device Manager and it shows as a usb mass storage device and properties says it s working properly Device Management doesn t even see it The questions are why can t I see it anymore how do I get it back to copy the phots Just for info s sake I m going to copy them to flash drives so my friend will have them backed up and be able to view them when he wants Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated and if we meet I ll buy you a beer nbsp

Hi, in a different thread archean recommended that I make sure that there is reasonable free space in the OS partition. How do I know what size it is and if I need to make it bigger? As you can see I know very little about computers.
My hard drive has 59.3 gigabytes free and 84.9 gigabytes used.
I think it's fine.
I have seen similar problems to mine but Realtek Audio HD jack not unplugged Manager recognizing not exactly the same I am using windows home Realtek HD Audio Manager not recognizing unplugged jack prem bit Motherboard H m with a Gateway dx - e All drivers are up to date as of - - I m new to the forum so please forgive any ignorance on my part All was working fine until yesterday When front jack detection Realtek HD Audio Manager not recognizing unplugged jack is enabled with Realtek HD manager I can t hear my speakers but my headphones work When I disable it the speakers work as do the headphones if plugged in The funny thing is when I enable the detection it is showing that on the front panel headphone speakers that there is still a jack plugged in and also shows where I actually have the speakers plugged in and that is the rear jack I assume that is why I can t hear any sound from the speakers I don t know why it doesn t respond when I unplug the headphones Note that it detects all of the other jacks when something is plugged in or unplugged Any help would greatly be appreciated nbsp

Welcome to Techspot!
Seriously, I had a little too much coffee today, so don't take serious about #1 and 2, since I could be able to help ya out with my similar experience.
The few other options you could considers:
1. Gripes, cries, bawl all you wants over a 40 gig hard drive. When you're done, consider your lesson learned about backing up your datas to external hard drive, or using the compact discs/media cards in timely basis. Now when you learned your lesson, buy the new drive and moves on.
2. Considers the expensive option by establishing the communication with the data recovery experts in company, and expect your wallet prepping for the long flights with your credit cards. You should expects a few digits of hundred, or probably thousands to recover a part of your valuable datas.
3. Considers the cheaper option by ordering a same I/O board for your hard drive, it's very good chance that one part of your logic board blew after surpassing the hours of operation. It should set you back about 50 bucks or less, and the reliable source to find it is at ebay.
You can type your information of your hard drive here, and I can help you to find the appropriate logic board to give your hard drive another try to recover your datas.
Also, If you have camera and know how to use Marco setting, this would be very helpful to support your thread
First thing to do is to list your spec, by looking at this similar label, you will need to type Model; and numbers/letters under the three barcodes. Take a look at this picture for reference.
The next thing is to find the logic board matching to your hard drive. Look for the white label on the bar of IDE plug bottom, it need to match with your HDD label revisions, and the final thing is to match your chip with your old/broken logic chip. Take a look at here.
Good luck man and looking forward to help ya out.

You need to specify your OS and SP level. I am suggesting you could try system repair. Here is the Vista method. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212 XP is similar. I am not familiar with the Win7 version.
In the case of XP this wont be very effective unless you actually have the install CD with slipstream SP level as well.
Other possibilities are system restore to before the original error; and/or a deep scan for malware.
Failing all that, a complete system reinstall might be advisable, which is a pain in fundamental anatomical areas.
I have two hard drives both from Seagate i have multiple partitions on both drives but just out of curiosity is one partition possible both drives together i mean only C:/ for both hardrives instead of two or more partitions.
Yes, it can. They can be configured into a RAID array or as JBOD although I'm no authority in this area. Either way you could have just one logical drive.
I have a Western Digital 250 GB external HD that had been working perfectly until yesterday afternoon. It has been making this repetitive whirring noise *not the clicking noise of death* and it died before I had a chance to copy the data onto another external. When I plug in the USB it makes the connection noise, but autoplay does not come up and it does not show up in my computer anymore. I did look in device manager and disk management and it does show up but it had no drive letter and it says unreadable. (I've attached a screenshot of this)
Is there any way I can recover the data off of it? Should I just take it out of the enclosure and hook it up to a desktop pc?
It sounds like the drive itself is dead rather than the enclosure. The repetitive 'whirring' noise likely is immediately following the click of death, just the click is pretty quiet on a lot of notebook drives. If yours is a full size (3.5") drive in that enclosure, then perhaps you are right and the click of death isn't occurring.
In either case, its not going to hurt to hook it up internally, because even if it doesn't work you aren't any worse off than you are now.

Hi again zillah
Sorry to hear you still have your problem.
I noticed one new thing from your old thread. You discovered it works when you're in Safe Mode? But not normal mode boot? See How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. Don't remember if we mentioned this in the old thread.
p.s. Also, maybe a long shot, but also test to see if any difference by turning off real-time protection in your antivirus or other anitmalware products like spybot etc. as maybe some anti-malware product is trying to "protect" those registry changes

Your link looks sufficient. I've got 4 external enclosures hooked up to several computers. The principle is the same in them all. If your enclosure is like the one shown then it is real simple. Ignore all the wires plugged into the green PCB because you don't need to disconnect any of them. Once you get to the point where you can see the drive itself, you may need to remove 4 screws from the bottom (also shown in your link). Then the drive will slide out a few millimeters away from the PCB and can be lifted out.
Hello with on on of Ran installed Windows space it out partition I need some help advice on a problem I am having with a new desktop I put together myself I m sure I have made some rookie mistakes along the way but this is why I did it for the learning process Anyhow a problem I have already encountered is when installing windows I partitioned a gb hard drive with one partition for the os with gb and two more partitions for storage Ran out of space on partition with Windows installed on it with the remainder of the unallocated memory Now the partition with my os is gb full and I know I am going to encounter problems I tried to shrink one of the storage partitions to leave gb of unallocated space to extend on the os partition but windows disk management tool does not allow you to do that Is my only option reinstalling windows onto one of these larger partitions and then formatting the old one I am fairly new to tech spot so If I am not using proper posting etiquette feel free to let me know Thank you any help would be appreciated nbsp
You can extend the partition that you have installed Windows into, but in my opinion it would be a better idea to use a program such as Easus Partition manager; at;
The free (Home) version is fine for a job like this.
An alternative I have used is at;
These programs work in a similar way, by showing the partitions as they exist now.
You click once on the one you need to resize (to highlight it), then right-click, choose 'resize', drag the end markers out to where you want the partition to be,
click 'apply'. That's it, it does all the rest, and can take a few minutes to complete.
Note that it is a very good idea to when making major changes like this, to make a system image onto an external hard drive, just as insurance. But this method has worked perfectly for me on several different makes of drive, (1TB Seagate, 4 partitons) and
Iomega 320GB (3 partitions).
Well I re-formatted the other day and have a problem that I ve never had before so here goes I currently have my Hi-Fi and Manager HD Realtek Audio my headphones plugged into my machine they used to work perfectly together I mean that the same sound off every program played into both of them at the same time If I didn t want to use my speakers I d simply Realtek HD Audio Manager turn the volume down on the front of it Now after re-formatting I can t get them to combine in Realtek HD Audio Manager I don t know if this is to do with RHDAM or if it s a Volume Mixer problem It s seriously starting to annoy me Even if I could just choose the programs that each device used So that I could put all programs onto both of them that would be great I m using the front Headphone and Mic socket for my headphones Pink amp Green For my Hi-Fi I m using the back black and pink sockets There are other sockets that I could use but I ve tried them all and to no avail The other colours just in case it s relevant are blue black green and bronze Can someone help me please Thank Realtek HD Audio Manager you P S I searched and couldn t find anything that related to this exact problem P P S I ve found that the same as before if I blow into my mic or move it the sound comes through my Hi-Fi speakers nbsp
have you tried the 'connector retasking' by right click the jack in the RHDCPL, also the additional options :
My laptop stopped booting in either safe/command or normal mode. it keeps shutting down after first Windows logo screen(animated block moving from left to right) and keeps repeating...
So to recover data i took drive out and connected as via adapter to USB port. Now when i open it it says 'drive not formmated'. So used EASEUS - it went though and pulled about 25GB data but all are in 'SWF' and 'GZ' format. nothing else.
Can someone guide me what can i do to either fix or recover data?
Hi, i think you should download Hiren use Acronis its better at restoring partitions...
Hope that helps
Hi , I have only one partation and I fedup with some problems from the laptop so I really want to delete everything and start a new life
You must read my other thread because it will help you to understand something I want to say
or I can say I can't do anything till the welcome screen comes so I cant log in safe mode etc.
You need to go into the bios at startup and set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order, then insert your OS disc and reboot, follow the prompts to format and install.
I have an external Hitachi HD My system is recognizing the HD partition recognized-no External hardware but when I try to save to the drive this is the message Folder is not accessible the folder may be located in an unavailable location prtected with a password or the file name contains a or I went into Disk Management and saw there was no quot F quot Drive Partitioned which was at External HD recognized-no partition one time Went to My Computer pulled up the F Drive and there are no files So I formated the drive However I really don t think it formatted because Windows cannot see the file Please I need sound advice I need this hard drive for school coming up I do not know why this is not functional It was fine the last time I used it External HD recognized-no partition about months ago That was when I noticed something was wrong when the docs would not save to the F drive Didn t think anything of it I just saved to my C drive Now my C drive is almost full I need the the HD for Adobe CS Anyone please help me out Thanks Pam nbsp
As a first test on your external drive, does it have a 'power on' light, also when you plug it in to the USB socket on PC, put your hand flat on the case, can you tell if it's spinning up inside? ( I can hear my Seagate, 2 clicks then drive motor speeding up.)
Try a different USB socket on your PC if you have a choice. If you are using a tower PC, use the USB sockets on the back, rather than the front panel.
Assuming it is working, In 'Computer', does the drive appear on the top row to the right of 'C' ?
If you right click on it, and choose properties, does the pie chart show saved content on the disk? (ie, part pink/ part blue).
If you have a Flash memory stick, does that appear in 'Computer' when plugged in?
>>(all this is to prove if the drive is actually working)
If all the above is true, and drive seems to be working, can you go into 'Control Panel', 'Hardware and sound',' Device manager','Disc drives'
right-click and choose; 'Scan for hardware changes'. Click on the small white arrow left of 'Disc Drives'.
Can you see your Hitachi drive at the bottom of the list?
hi guy's i just upgraded from windows vista to win.7 and everything was working fine till i went to my device manager then i found out that my coprocessor is not installed i have tried installing it automatically but to no avail please what driver is recommended for the coprocessor can Nvidia product work am using an amd sempron processor nvidia graphics 2gb ram 32bit operating system and window 7 ultimate operating system.
Not sure what component of your system that "Coprocessor" will be from. Do you have a cd or dvd that came with your system/motherboard? If not check what motherboard you have and go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers for it. I would guess that would be the most likely culprit
I currentley have 2 300gb HDs set up in a RAID0 configeration on my Dell XPS420 running Windows Vista 32bit. i would like to create 2 partitions, one for the OS and one for my Music and Videos.
does anyone have a step by step guide/tutorial on how i can do this?
not a good idea - - raid0 is fragile as-is.
The right sequence is
do the partitioning of the physical drive(s)
then initialize the raid-x on the appropriate partitions of your choice
format the remaining non-raid partitions
now load your data
On (3), make sure you use one partition per physical drive and don't allow the raid-x to be only one one HD - - kind of silly isn't it!
I bought recovery external Comcast drive Data from this drive years ago or rather I received as a gift details aside the thing broke and I m having one tiny issue before I can install its guts and save the remainder Data recovery from Comcast external drive of my data Data recovery from Comcast external drive I ve read similar issues on other forums with what is more than likely the same product and found a few conspicuous details It s a Tb drive made up of two Gb WD HD s installed in a Raid format The Primary Master within the case is in a continuous start-up cycle I E Spin up click twice reset so assuming I can get the freezer trick to work long enough I should be able to clean it no problem The problem I DO have is pretty pathetic by comparison I checked the BIOS and the broken drive is recognized as PM while my actual main drive is only M Could this be preventing Windows from normal start-up If so how do I Change the M S setting on a Sata drive so the broken drive is recognized as a slave instead and how do I Change the setting on my main Sata drive to read Primary Master rather than rd Master The second drive is a non-issue it seems as it s recovering fine as I type this but I May have to recover them simultaneously as a virtual Raid if the data is split in some f d way as well Either way only the one drive is giving me problems at the moment nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/data-recovery-from-comcast-external-drive.160230/

What did you do with the video cable that was connected to the screen?
After my hard drive crashed, my brother installed a new one for me. I ordered recovery discs from Sony and he installed them also. The computer couldn't detect any operating system from what he told me so since I misplaced my Vista Home Edition he installed XP Professional. After not being able find any drivers for my Sony Vaio model VGN-FE855E I found out that my notebook is not compatible with anything besides Vista. Sony Tech people told me I should find my operating system on the recovery discs the sent me. Im trying to run them but I have a message saying: "The recovery drive letter is the same as the system drive letter". What does it mean and why I can't get my system recovered?
Hi, First I must say I have no knowledge of Sony Viao hardware, BUT you have the problem which is, when you bought the PC new, it will have had the Vista OS installed twice. Once in a partition that you never use, that will be in the condition as it was the first day you used it. The second version, is a copy of the first, but is the one you have been working with, until it crashed, or hard drive failed.
When you go into the recovery routine, the software is looking for the first copy of Vista, and then to copy it over (on top of) the second version of Vista. BUT because you have changed the hard drive for a new one, the recovery partition is not there. Your PC was pre-activated with Microsoft for your particular machine to use Vista (Home premium, or Pro or Ultimate), and will have had the drivers installed for all the devices, (touchpad, webcam, DVD, card reader etc) on the original hard drive, which you now have lost. What you do now depends on what Sony have supplied on the discs that they sent to you.
I will assume they have supplied the Vista operating system, or the Sony OEM version, plus all the drivers for your PC. So all you need to do, is to make your PC read from the DVD drive when you switch on, with the Sony disc in the DVD drive. It should then be fairly automatic, and you will need to enter some information as you go along. The most important being the 'Product key' which is printed on a sticker underneath your PC. Best to copy it down before you start. It is five blocks of letters and numbers, you will have to type them into Vista, part way through the install process. To make your Pc look at the DVD drive rather than the hard drive, you press power on, then look for a message on-screen, 'Setup=F2' or 'Boot order=F12', or similar, it may vanish off screen quickly, but if you miss it, just shut down and start again. When you see a screen with options, you look for 'Drives' or 'Boot order'. You have to make the list of your drives look like; 1st =CD/DVD, 2nd On-board IDE/SATA. (Any others in the list are not important. NOTE that you have to use certain keys, eg. cursor, enter, pg up, pg dwn, esc at this stage.)
Then put the Sony DVD into the drive, look on screen for the option 'Save changes and exit' (normally F11). Your PC will reboot, and start reading off the DVD. It will ask you various questions as you go along, (your location, time zone etc). You should find it takes about 1 1/2 hours, and you may have to put in a second DVD as supplied by SONY after Vista has installed. If all goes well, you may need to go to Microsoft's site to 'activate' Vista, but it's automatic. I will assume this is what will happen, if not, in worst case situation, that is if Sony didn't supply Vista, you MAY have to buy a new Operating system, it will be Windows 7 now, not Vista. If you do that, you will get a new 'Product key'. Also you will need to go to Sony's site to download the specific drivers for your PC. (But try your Sony supplied disc first, you should not need to spend any more money). Hope this helps.

Sometimes this happens when trying to do a created recovery. One wrong step or file can make the recovery impossible. You may have to "bite the bullet" and start with a fresh Windows install. A better way to save files is to place the old hard drive in a external USB enclosure. Install the new drive in the laptop and install Windows and all its updates. Then connect the USB enclosure and copy your important files and documents from the old drive to the new drive

Take a look here as may also be the issue with XP and your hard drive
I've just installed windows 7 onto my ide hard drive with my sata as a secondary. My sata used to be primary and was the only hard drive I had; now that I've restarted my computer my sata drive no longer shows an assigned letter but looks like it still has the data.
In Disk Management it shows that the sata has a healthy primary partition, but I am given no other options but to delete it. How am I supposed to get that data back?
Hi, I dropped an external harddisc on the floor, and it doesn't work.
So, i want to retrieve all the data that isn't broken.
is it possible with the "RECOVER" command in command prompt? I cannot open window. maybe its the "pickup-thing" thats broken and i have to get it fixed, but its like 600 £ and the data is not that important...
If it's physically broken, there's no way other than a very expensive method used by data recovery companies. Does it power on and spin up? Is it recognized when you plug it in? can you remove the drive from the enclosure?
Hi there I m having some problem with my sound behavior I m using intel d gcnl onboard Realtek audio manager HD behavior realtek driver win xp I ve chasing front panel audio port Here s the problem I m having recently I connected my front panel port HD pinouts But after connecting my front Realtek HD audio manager behavior panel is treating like rear panel and giving output on both panels Realtek audio manager does not popup for plugging front panel there is a portion for front panel in audio manager amp ticked auto popup Like as while playing music in speaker if I connect head phone in front panel both speaker amp headphone are running simultaneously Is it natural or one of the panel should get muted Here what I did Connect front panel wires in intel d gcnl board HD Config Reinstall realtek audio driver Also try with recent updated driver Plug both panel speaker amp headphone Both are playing at the same time same thing none of them are getting muted Is there any solution or it is natural If natural is there any way to mute one of them Please healp nbsp
It is natural if they have been heavily used, or overdriven. What sound cards and sound chips do is burn out or wear out... Might be time to disable what you have, and install a low cost sound card.
For such a setup on a d945gcnl, you have some significant miles on it.
Quick question, is there an easy way to read the block size of a drive in Windows 7? I'd imagine there is but a cursory look on google usually ended up as linux commands which do not apply to me.
With NTFS there is no means to set blocksize and the cluster size is adjusted automatically.
With Linux, yes, you set the blocksize and describe the partition in terms of count of blocks.
Hi All Recently my older Acer Aspire - notebook hard drive failed on me It s about yrs old Was running Vista Home I of course like an never burned the recovery media from the hard drive And it s just my luck that Acer no longer has the recovery media available They told me there was nothing recovery no hard media Acer longer failed... available? drive Aspire they could do for me and directed me to Microsoft My question is this I have Windows Vista home running on my Acer Aspire hard drive failed... recovery media no longer available? Desktop If I smack in a new hard drive in the notebook can I use the recovery media from the Desktop to reinstall the OS on the notebook If not do I have any other options I guess I could always run Ubuntu I know this is an older notebook not necessarily worth a lot but I d like to keep this running for my wife She uses it primarily for web surfing and she s hogging my laptop like crazy every since her s died Thanks in advance Frank nbsp
You can't legally used your Desktop's recovery media on your laptop (also because usually manufacturer's build such medium for a particular piece of hardware, with all drivers etc. pre-installed).
I think you can either choose to run Ubuntu or you can get one of those cheap OEM windows media from e.g. newegg. However, one draw back of this is, I believe you can't get any help from Microsoft directly, if you ever need it.
You were probably reading the title and thinking omg just use the recovery console and bob you but make netbook new do daughter Got - discs! recovery a how s your uncle out spits two DVDs Well its an Acer One netbook with no optical drive Acer s recovery console tells me I need to make backups which is obvious as a HD failure would kill our OS but its only option is to use a Got daughter a new netbook - but how do you make recovery discs! optical drive So the challenge I ve quot bing co uk quot and got nowhere is how on earth do I make two DVDs with the data without a an internal optical drive or b an external one I m not prepared to purchase an external one just to do this one job as I have no other use for one What I ve tried so far Sharing my PCs DVD RW drive and mapping it on the netbook which ends up with a folder and thus doesn t work checking settings to see if I could make ISO s instead - No go there too I ve even tried using a combination of my E-SATA dock but the connections are the wrong way around to run my PC s DVD RW drive via USB which would have given me an external DVD RW It really shouldn t be this difficult to make OS backups and there must be another way of doing this backup without resorting to spending on a new external DVD RW drive just to do it PLEASE help lol nbsp
OK, I might have a solution:
If I use CloneZilla to make an entire image of the netbook hard drive, am I correct in saying it will capture the entire OS in its current form (e.g. unused), as well as the ENTIRE recovery partition? (They both on one physical disc).
Would that work, enabling me to keep a copy of everything on the entire drive in its current (new) state? I have an external SATA dock I can use to clone it (and put it back if I ever need).
After looking at the above, I decided against it, as it just introduced another issue of mounting suitable hard disc space to make the backup.
So I decided to go with EASUS ToDo backup - And removed the hard disc and I'm now backing it up (the whole drive) in my PC as we speak. It looks very good for a free app.
I wish I'd just thought about this from the start - It took me all of 5 mins to download, install it, turn the pc off, remove the 2.5" sata, and then fit it in my case and reboot. LOL.
Least this post will come in handy for others unsure in the future no doubt.
Does anybody know what this device does. It's located under SCSI and RAID Controller, it's called AWFOEXCS IDE Controller. I have no idea what the hell is that.
I've seen those on the Media Center edition of Windows
I've just reinstalled windows 7 onto another hard drive, and now I want my data from from my sata 1tb which was previously split to a partitioned for xp and the other for data. This sata is my secondary drive by the way.
Since the sata doesn't show up in my computer I checked it out in disk manager and the first half is unallocated which is okay, but there the second half is, healthy primary partition with no letter designated to it. The only option I have is to delete it. How do I get my stuff off it and not delete it?
Hive might have got corrupted. Was this partition created under Windows XP or prior Windows 7?
