Local Network Blocked

Q: Local Network Blocked

After un-installing Commodo, I now rely on the Windows Firewall, but now access to the local network is blocked. Internet is open.

How do I regain my network?

Preferred Solution: Local Network Blocked

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Cheemag hi and welcome

What are you using for an anti-virus? Are you using homegroup, or workgroup for your local area network? What is your network setup?

Hi,
I apparently have some remnants of a previous infection.
I cannot modify my registry with regedit (haven't tried any other tool yet) and I wanted to add additional user access to my network and found out that I cannot modify that either.
As for the Registry, I tried to modify the permissions (I'm admin) for specific keys, but it wouldn't allow me doing that. I added an additional key to set DisableRegistryTools to 0, no effect. Actually the key is there but doesn't unblock the saving.
I did some sweeps with Superantispyware, Ad-Aware, Malware, all no results. So now where to go, anyone an idea?
I'm running WIN XP Pro SP2, avast, superantispyware

Hello I'm currently in the process of testing deploying IE in setup XML - file File Local Enterprise Local List Network, IE11 Manager or HTTP, Site our environment and I've begun testing on the IE Enterprise Site List manager I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO IE11 Enterprise Site List Manager XML file setup - HTTP, Local Network, or Local File per the article below nbsp HTTP Local Network Local File https technet microsoft com en-us library Dn aspx In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file and I was curious what the best options are and why nbsp Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits downsides to each Here's the options that I can see using HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file Local Network UNC - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package application when updates to the list are required Could anyone please point me towards some articles etc explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other nbsp I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option because it doesn't require us to maintain an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method or benefits to going with another method Thanks

This sounds really noobie of me but is it possible to improve local network transfer speed by adding a 2nd network card. I was planning to connect one exclusively for lan transfers and another one hooked to a separate wireless router.

Right now only a maximum of 3 users can stream SD videos off the PC before it gets a little choppy.

The pc in question runs on windows 7 and it's board has built in gigabit, I happen to have a spare gigabit card.

A:Will adding a 2nd network card improve local network transfer speed

That won't really help the way you are describing the problem, although adding access points will help with streaming to wireless devices.

Although there is a setting in Group Policy that allows you to use two connections at the same time, I don't believe it will help in this situation.

I've done many HD movie streaming tests on my system.

I can stream from my media PC to at least 7 other machines at the same time, 4 wired, 3 wireless, plus my TV, and have no problems at all, no skipping, no freezing, even with the same movie in the same place or with 8 different movies at once, my TV is connected to my media center PC so counts as the 8th one.

This is Gb LAN, and 300Mbps wireless but even the 65Mbps limited laptop has no problem.

I'm not really sure why you are seeing these limitations but it may be the router.

Hi:

My colleague brought me his computer. Apparently, he uninstalled AVG and at some point installed Malware Defense. I've deleted all traces of Malware Defense from the registry and unregistered the associated dlls but I cannot successfully install AVG9--the installation always fails due to not responding in a timely fashion. I can install Spybot 1.62 but it won't launch in either regular nor safe mode. Likewise I can install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but it won't respond.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

HI,

I have installed server 2003 on a small network and created a domain that is the same as the public domain name (ie the companies website).

This is now causing a problem because when i type in the public address (for example www.company.com) it is trying to resolve it locally - because the local domain name is also company.com.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get round this problem?

Many thanks in advance

Dave

A:problem with the local network having the same domain name as the public network

add 'local.' to the internal domain or change it altogether.

Your public domain should not have any connection into your private infrastructure,
but you may have references from private->public; not very common.

Help guys!

I think I got a virus - I can't change the firewall settings anymore, on avast - my real time shields status is unknown and it won't let me turn it on. When I try to turn it on it says "Unable to start the file system shield! Shield unreachable."

ALso I can't access the internet. I get the computer icon with the exclamation mark and when I try to diagnose, it says "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings."

I scanned with spyware doctor, malwarebytes, adware, super antispyware already and now scanning with avast. The previous ones removed alot of viruses but I still think there are some remaining.

I can't even use restore point cause it always fails :/ Please help!

I posted a couple of days ago about my network access dropping from local amp internet to local to Local Fix Network no connection after Local Network Fix recently upgrading to vista I tried every solution othe people have posted on the net but my problem still persisted So last night I reinstalled vista and created a restore point after the st start-up I was able to use the internet without interruption for over hrs Then this morning windows Local Network Fix installed updates After the updates were installed my problem started again I went ahead and restored my computer to the st restore point and now it is working fine My fix to this problem is to not install any updates I know that it is not the proper fix but for anyone as frustrated with vista as i am this is a way to maintain your internet connection I am a newcomer to vista but I found out that this problem has been happening to other for years I can't understand why microsoft wont fix this problem If this post helps anyone else with the same problem please reply with your story

A:Local Network Fix

the problem with not updating vista is it leaves your operating system wide open to attack , thats exactly how conficker spread. An unpatched OS can make your firwall and AV next to useless

why dont you set your updates so they are not automatic , then pick the updates to install , install them one at a time run your pc for a while each time until you find the offending update

The fastest way -- FTPDMIN: Minimal ad-hoc file transfer Windows FTP server Windows 7 will alert you that it's listening on the FTP ports but that's what you want right? Make note of the IP address it's listening on and make sure that's the address on your local network you want.

Then just use your favorite FTP client in Ubuntu...

In the Windows Firewall, left pane, did you try to Troubleshoot my network or Restore Defaults.

Also verify in Device Manager if any problems showing up for your Network Adapter and are your drivers up to date.

A:VPN and local network

You'll have to do something called "split-tunneling" to access both the internet and LAN.
I don't know what operating system you have, and the steps to do this are different depending on the OS, so here are a few links to help you figure it out (I honestly have next to no experience in this area):

HI all,
My office has recently blocked internet in all the personal systems, but the LAN is still working (i.e all the computers in office are shared and are in network). There are very few computers which have internet connections which are also in LAN with my computer.

Is there any method to surf internet on my computer by connecting it to internet PC or any software which can bypass the proxy and connect to internet ??

Thanks in advance

I must be missing something... I admit I don't like vista and avoid vista systems when possible. This one (my cousin's) was connecting to the internet just fine via his aircard. He then connected to a wireless network at a hotel just fine. When he got back home it would no longer connect to the internet. I have tried connecting to my wireless network and have even plugged it in directly to my router and still get the same results. It shows a good connection but an X to the internet. I've checked everything that makes sense to me and can't figure it out. The wireless card seems to be working fine. I've renewed the IP address. I checked to make sure it wasn't trying to go through a proxy server. Can anyone offer some help?

A:Keep gettind blocked from any network activity for 1 minute

I don't know for sure but would give odds that it's your security suite. I think there is a Removal Tool to clean up after it. If you had another one that (or the two combined) could also be the problem.

Don't see how the router could be causing this, but would be worth checking by testing with another computer connected by ethernet.

Hi everybody. I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 on an older (2006) Dell XPS desktop. I have the computer hooked up to my ethernet with a new cable I just bought. Earlier it was all working fine, Windows 7 installed correctly, the internet was really fast and connected properly, but now, after shutting down the computer for a few hours and turning it back on, nothing works. I cannot access any websites from any browser--all the browsers are telling me it doesn't "trust" the connection.

It's showing that I'm connected to the ethernet (i.e. no connection problems show up in the Network Preferences), I just can't access any web pages.

I know there's nothing wrong with my router or connection because I have another computer (a Windows 10 desktop) hooked up to it as well and that computer works fine, so what's wrong with this computer?

Hi
I got a new laptop because my old one was fried by the weather! But now when I try to connect to the network, I can only access the internet and I want to know how I can get my shared folders, which is on the one network computer (which is the main one) to show on "my network places"

I'm using windows XP

A:Cant connect to local LAN network

You first have to get the computers on the same network (e.g., connected to the same router). Then you need to enable file and printer sharing; here is a wizard way.

Run the Network Setup wizard (found in Control Panel of XP). Tell it each of your computers connects to the internet via "residential gateway" and that you want to enable file and printer sharing. Create a disk at the end only if you have a Windows PC other than XP or 2k Pro or Vista.

Windows XP firewall (if SP2 or SP3) will be properly configured by the wizard. You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine. Unique computer names and same workgroup, of course.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders (or drives) or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (up to 15 minutes) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.

I have what is probably a basic, stupid user question, but I'm having a brain freeze.

I have a router that issues DHCP addresses in the range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.119. I use other IP addresses outside this range for devices that need static IPs. I've used 192.168.1.120 and 192.168.1.130. I also have an extra router on the network with with DHCP disabled.

So I set a computer to use 192.168.1.200, and it doesn't connect. Am I missing something?

So, here is the problem. I have two laptops I am working on. The gentleman who owns the laptops recently got an air port router for his macs. Well, the two HPs that he has, both of their wireless cards stopped connecting to his network. Nor, will the connect to mine. If I connect it through Ethernet, the internet works great. If I connect it through wireless, local only every time.

I need help to resolve this issue. I have tried renewing the ip address. Disabled the IPv6. Uninstalled Norton in case it had a block on it. Disabled firewall temporarily. Uninstalled all Air Port files. I am absolutely boggled on what this guy could have done.

If it means anything, he is running vista on both of them.

log into the router and remove the wireless security - no see if it will connect - if it does - log back into the router and try the wireless security again
------------------------------------------------------------------------
What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

can we see an ipconfig /all
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

Hi, This is urgent

Something happened to my computer after the last virus scan. I was thinking maybe my files got deleted with it

I am not able to connect to the internet trough CABLE. The cable hole on my software shows a green sign (means it is connected?), but there is no sign of connectivity

I tried a different cable network, and I still get the same. No reaction whatsoever from the internet

Only wireless is available, which is ridiculous for a Desktop

I open the network connections and there is nothing, just wireless drivers and wireless availability

I tried to create a network manually but, the computer only allows me to create wireless or such connections

Everything is really slow..i cant even watch a video or play a game. everything gets jammed. tx to the wireless

How to fix this?

Hello,

I'm puzzled as to how "add a local printer" and "add a network, wireless or bluetooth printer" are different.

Under "Add a local printer", I can use an existing port or create a new port, under which I can set a TCP/IP address to connect to shared printer over network. What's the difference between existing port and new port? How is this port local when I can set IP address to printer shared over network?

And how does "add a network, wireless or bluetooth printer" function differently than the former? I'm trying to distinguish the nature between the two so I can get a better understand for troubleshooting purposes. I appreciate any help.

Hey Chris (I'm assuming your name is Chris from the IP settings...),

Let me be the first to welcome you to Vista X64 forums.

It looks like your router/modem does not have DHCP enabled (or it has a MAC Address filter in place.) Do you know how to edit your router's settings? If not, your ISP may need to do it from their side.

I would like to thank you one hundred ten percent for posting this information from the get-go. It makes our lives so much easier when information is posted in this manner.

It looks like when your computer is set to DHCP/Automatic IP, your router is not giving the PC an IP address. If I'm not mistaken, the 169.254... IP addy is an APIPPA address (Automatic Private IP Address). This address is used by Windows when it is looking for an address but the router it's connected to does not want to give it one.

This either means your router has DHCP disabled, or your router has a "filter" on it baring all but a specific set of MAC Addresses/computer names from connecting to it.

I have two computers connected to the same modem with a printer connected to the one. The problem is that I can neither find the printer through Windows from the other computer so that I'll be able to print documents from both computers nor can I create a local network between the computers. I can't understand what the problem is because both computers connect to the internet without any problems.

I recently had to re-install Windows XP (SP2) on my Dell 5150 Laptop. I have not been able to get my internet connection to work since the re-install. I have plugged the cable into my network card in the computer and the light that comes on is orange and not green. I know the cable and internet connection work fine because I use that same connection/cable on my desktop computer with no problems. I recently used this same port on my laptop not more than a week ago with no glitches. I have gone to Network Connections in the control panel and there is no Local Area Connection icon being displayed. There is a 1394 Connection and a Wireless Network Connection icon displayed but no LAN connection. I do not have a wireless Network connection so I am unable to use that. Please let me know what you think about why I do not have a LAN connection.

You've lost me a little if the two networks are connected why don't you just rewire it so there is one big network. Do you think you could supply a network diagram of your current network? Then we can work out what you need to do.

I have a small network of four desktops and two laptops. One of my laptops, an IBM Think pad X40 cannot access the workgroup. It cannot even see itself, I time out and get an error if I try to view the workgroup.

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

All the other PCs function fine. This has really got my stumped and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Ive tried everything I can think of short of reformatting. I've reinstalled in hardware drivers, I've reinstalled all the client-service-protocol stuff in network connections, I've enabled and disabled firewalls, set it as the DMZ host on the router. Ive used both wired and wireless connections. I've gone through the wireless setup wizard probably 15 times now. I am totally baffled as to what is causing this.

A:Cannot see other computers on local network.

Forgot to mention: Other computers can see the name of the IBM Laptop on the network but cannot access it with a network path not found error. And the Internet works fine.

Hi-

I am hoping someone has run across this and can offer some advice
My printing worked fine up till a few weeks ago.
I have removed and unintalled the printers, drivers and packages.
Rebooted my laptop
Went to vendor website and downloaded latest drivers
Installed printer first as local LPT1 with the latest drivers from previous step
added port, a TCP/IP port and provided the static IP address reserved for this printer.

When I try to print a test page it sends to printer and after about a minute the print queue
will show "error printing" and that is it.

Print spooler is set to automatic and started
no other jobs are in print queue at time I send the test page

Thanks in advance for any help, tom

Good morning, I connect at home wirelessly with no issues using W7 Ultimate on my Fujitsu laptop. I don't really understand all the different types of network but currently I share with no one, and under the network settings it states 'Home Network' and then 'Ready to Create.'

I was away for work recently at another site and they have an open wi-fi for visitors to use on non-work laptops, so it's passworded but other than that, it's totally unrestricted.

When I tried to connect it found the wi-fi network with full strength but would not identify and connect - the password was okay as I when I tried an incorrect one, it stated just that.

Do I need to do something different with regards to grouping/network etc or could the fault have possibly been with them?

Thanks - Blue

Note: it used to work on XP Pro!

I have just up dated four of our computers to windows 10 and set up a wifi network between the 4 computers without too many problems.
However I have a problem with a local connection from my main pc (windows 10) to a pc which runs in parallel (pc on windows xp) they are linked by ethernet cable. When I boot the machines in the morning windows 10 displays an icon with the xp pc and all works fine. Later on in the day the xp pc icon has disappeared but working on the xp machine it is still possible to link to the windows 10 machine.
My question is once the icon has disappeared of the windows 10 pc how can I re-establish to link? It appears that the link still exists but I can't access it.

When the icon disappears, trying typing the ip of the machine into explorer.

Like this:

Code:

or
\\10.0.0.28\
If that don't work, open an admin command prompt and enter this command to see if the other machine shows up

Which is it, local network or one network to another and if the latter, is it via the Internet or still local?

Remote on a local network is a snap. After assigning a static local I.P. to all server machines if you haven't already (not needed if you use machine name instead), share the folders you want to serve and just open them across the network.

Hi everyone,

I have a problem. One of the computers here at work can't log into the network. When I click O:\ Drive it gives me an error saying "Local device in use". This has happend before in the past. The problem was one of the tech guys hooked up a laptop and put a IP address that someone already using, so they put a different IP Address for the laptop. But the computer still could not get into the network drive. Eventually the problem was resolved but I was not here to see it done.

I already checked the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties and everything looks ok.

Does anyone has a resolution for this?

If am trying to share files / printer between to Win 7 computers on the same network. From one of the computers neither the homegroup or the network will work. I can see the other computer in the homegroup but I can't access the files.

With network, it tells me the network provider name is invalid. I will not even allow me to access the network folders on the local machine.

The machine has a single administrator account. I think that there is something wrong with the administrator privileges, but I am not sure what.

I have tried most of the things mention in this forum to right the problem, but nothing works. There was a suggestion to scan the system files for corrupted or broken files. It writes a log file at the end of this process. I couldn't examine the file because there is something wrong with my administrator privileges.

So HELP please.

Hi there,

If you're sure that the Homegroup in your network is setup correctly try creating a new account as Administrator from the problematic computer and see if you're able to access the shared network resources. Compare the ipconfig/all output of this computer to another working computer. If there's any discrepancies please post both ipconfig/all output in your next post.

So frustrating. Okay. I have a pretty basic network. Its 3 computers, 1 wireless 2 wired. all through 1 router. Okay I have an ADSL modem to a Linksys WRT54g, then two computers wired, one on wireless and an XBOX 360 wired too. I cannot ping one wired computer to the other, both computers can ping the router and both can ping loopback (127.0.0.1)

Why cant they ping eachother? I have had this network setup and running before, now i have updated both motherboards in both wired computers and reinstalled windows on both aswell. They used to communicate perfectly and when i went to setup the network they could already ping eachother so i never had a problem. any suggestions?

Any suggestions as to how to configure my system so I can print on my network printer while remaining connected to the VPN?

A:Local network printing with a VPN

Are you using a VPN client to connect to the system? That would complicate matters, a lot.

I'm using a VPN here, with a Cisco router. However, to "log on" to the VPN I just use the Windows logon system with my username/password. I just had to add my network printer (HP LaserJet 6 on a DLink server) to the system as a local administrator, and it was available and working under the VPN account.

If I have three computers on local network and only one has internet access will this update all machines on local network?

A:Updates on Local Network

Yeah - this is a great option. It does not entirely stop getting stuff from internet as it is basically a torrent system, but is much faster and much reduces download demand

A torrent system basically extacts bits of a file from multiple sources, so each serving pc does not have to upload whole file (uploading usually being slower than downloading), and receiving pc glues it all together again. So you might get 5 pcs uploading a fifth each of the file at the same time, and pc can download all five parts simultaneously as download is usually several times faster than upload. It actually works in much smaller increments, but the principle is the same.

I always update my fast pc first, leaving my other slower devices switched off. Then I turn on other devices, and you see the hdd flicking away as it serves the updates to the other devices.

Do not enable last option as it will 'steal' bandwidth from you.

Hello One of my mom s friend recently gifted me his old laptop because he bought a new one It is a Windows Vista -bit about a month ago is what Wireless now that Local Network does mean? Everything was working fine until Wireless Network is now Local what does that mean? last night when I closed my laptop in the middle of a Netflix show Perhaps that was Wireless Network is now Local what does that mean? wrong but I ve never had that issue before Anyway this morning when I woke up my internet was not working The diagnostics said that my Wireless Security Key was not correct even though I typed in the correct password I even checked on my phone and my phone worked So on my phone I managed to Google the issue I tried the solutions and none of them worked Till I was fed up went into my router by clicking properties and tried every single security type Then magically it worked Ironically on the same security type that it started with WPA-Personal TKIP However now my wireless says Local and Internet What does that mean Does that mean that now everybody in my apartment can connect to my internet and reach all my files All my passwords and secure information If so how do I change it back to being private Thank you anyone who can help me nbsp

Hi I have sbcglobal dsl using a speedstream I have a hub between my desktop running Win k and the router My computer can access the internet with the IP settings quot Obtain IP address on IP network conflicts local automatically quot and quot obtain DNS server automatically IP conflicts on local network quot When we attach another computer on the network we get IP address conflicts on both computers The other computer is a work laptop running XP so the settings are not same as the desktop above but it can access the network as long as it booted with the ethernet connected Just to be clear each computer can access the internet only when the other computer is off Any idea what the problem might be We d also like to attach wireless network access for the laptop Edit in ------- I was looking at my modem config and saw the following set to PPP is on the modem ---------------------------------------------------------------- following copied from modem setup screen PPP Location WARNING Changing these settings may interfere with your ability to connect to the Internet PPP is on the modem This is the normal mode for this modem when connected to a single computer In this mode the PPP session is initiated from the modem Gateways and routers should work in this mode but their configuration may have to be changed to do so e g you may need to have the gateway router IP address changed to PPP is on the computer This mode is normally used if you need to run a PPPoE client on your PC This mode can be used with a gateway or router which initiates a PPPoE session To return to the DSL modem user interface you will need to directly connect your PC to the modem without any gateway or router between the modem and the PC Bridged Mode PPPoE is not used This mode must be used if you are connecting to a non-PPPoE network ------------------------------------------------- I remember whn I wanted home networking from an indepedant ISP many years ago i had to ask for a set number of IP adresses so perhaps I have to upgrade the service Thanks PS The router package that comes with sbc dsl is dismal No manual for the speedstream and no explaination on how to attach several computers I guess they want you to order a networking quot kit quot which presumably is just a hub and a few cables nbsp

I recently purchased a new HP laptop with built in wireless adapter. While setting up this PC I connected to my wireless network just fine to update the windows operating system, (Vista Home Premium).

A few days later I upgraded my desktop PC which is connected to the router with a cable from XP Media Edition to Windows Vista Home Premium.

Now, when I turn on my new laptop it will only connect to my wireless network "locally" and not connect to the Internet.

Nothing has changed with my router.

What gives? I can't make it work.

Is there a command prompt command to run a file within a network? Such as shutdown -i [localip] etc..

A:Run a file within a local network

One does not "run a file". Open can "open" a file, but that's executing an application and telling it to open that file.

Perhaps if you were more specific about what you mean.

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. Then reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure it. (Make sure you know the important settings before starting this procedure.)

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network if it is not obvious.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I don't know computers at all and I need help... reassurance to be more specific.

My computer accesses the internet via a local network connection shared by my roomate. The router, hardware firweall, and DSL line originate in his room and so my question is this: Is there any way that my roomate might be remotely examining (from his computer)the websites I visit or the work that I do on my computer? He knows computers very well where as I do not. Thanks for any help you could provide, it is appreciated.

Go Chargers!

A:Local Network Connection Security

Hi, Yes it is possible that this could be going on.

Especially if he is the one who has physical access to your computer, that is, can he go and do work on yours?

Even if you have a Windows password, it is no real trick to bypass it, even in XP.

Here are some things to look over, please ask about anything you want to put in place because you are already possibly being monitored...and, if you make certain changes, your Internet access could be "cancelled" by what you do so I advise to make sure you don't change anything yet.
Scary, yes it is. Here are some pages to read up on using Internet Connection Sharing at home, with XP. Don't rush to try anything but I do want you to compare how things are set up to what they advise is safe. And, ask about things before you do anything!

http://www.google.com/search?source...hen+using+Internet+Connection+Sharing+at+home

http://ms.helifan.net/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02july01.mspx <<the best info is here
http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/lockdownyourpc/Lock_Down_Your_Home_PC_Security_Essentials.htm

Now, stop and think- are you using a firewall, sharing one, or using the XP one?

If you don't know, you need to find out and the articles above will help you.

If he set up the equipment, the router configuration would most likely have been done from his pc,
and then if he did want to "see" what you had been doing, he would have had to do some steps ON your computer. If he set up more than just File and Printer sharing, Internet sharing, there are ways to tell.

Look at the icon of your Drive C: in My Computer....is it a hard drive icon with a hand holding it?

That would be an entire hard drive set up as a Share, and anyone on the network could go in from their pc and look through all files. There could just be some folders shared....

If you start the computer, and quickly start tapping F8 key, you should get a menu in black and white...like going to Safe Mode.....move the highlighted line down to Safe Mode, and press Enter once, then press Enter for your operating system, XP Home, or Pro.....and select the Administrator account to boot to by pressing Enter or OK

If you get a password box.....did you make a password for it? If you did not, someone has, because
by default, that account is NOT passworded.

Ok so I was trying to get xbox live through my PC which is connected to wireless internet. I was fallowing some online guide and I messed up on a step where i had to change my IP adress so one of the parts is like .1 instead of .0 might not be the problem. but now my PC tells me that my local network cable is unplugged and everything but my PC is connected to the internet, what are some options to fix it.FML

A:local network cable unplugged help

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
For wired connection issues, have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I hv been sharing the folders/drives from long now. Now, for some reasons, I am facing an issue where i cannot share a thing on my local network. Everytime i get a message saying "You do not have persmissions and contact the system admin".... Snapshot is shown below.... plz help ??

Note : the persmissions has been given and I am trying to access the other computer from an Admin account only....

A:[SOLVED] cant share on the local network

Instead of browsing the computer from My Network Places, go to Start/Run and type the name of the computer (Ex) \\JMTE-D\Shared. Also make sure the Shared folder is shared (it has a hand icon underneath it) Be sure both computers have user names and Passwords to access the computer. If there is not a password, you cannot access the computer over a network. Lastly, make sure both computers are part of the same Workgroup name. If typing the name doesn't work, then try typing the IP Address.
