Can I transfer files from Vista laptop to Win 7 laptop via bluetooth?

Q: Can I transfer files from Vista laptop to Win 7 laptop via bluetooth?

Hi all,

Question is as per the subject line but the reason I ask is that although each laptop is visible to the other in Devices and Printers when I try to send a file from the Vista laptop to the Win 7 laptop I get a message failure message. On the Win 7 machine when I click the the bluetooth icon in the systray the option to 'Allow a Device to connect' is greyed-out and there is no alert that a device is trying to connect. A far as I can tell the bluetooth settings on both laptops are OK, adding a device was OK with the passwork handshake completed without problem.

Is this a driver issue, settings issue, or summat else?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Couple of questions

Are you using "homegroup" for networking?

Is there no other way you can transfer like wifi (its faster)?

I have a HP laptop and connect it to my desktop through Bluetooth. But it takes lot of time to transfer files especially pictures. Can someone tell me how to boost it?

A:Laptop takes lots of time to transfer files through Bluetooth

Taken from this WikiPedia article:

Bluetooth Core Specification Version 2.1 + EDR is fully backward compatible with 1.2, and was adopted by the Bluetooth SIG on July 26, 2007. It supports theoretical data transfer speeds of up to 3 Mbit/s.Click to expand...

That explains why it's so slow.

In this case we would suggest you to go online to the Dell website and configure the system at  your cost .
In terms of how long windows 7 will be support ? You will get support as long as the system is under warranty .
If the system is not under warranty you will still get support however it will be paid.

I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.

My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

My issue: I can't see most of the files or I don't seem to have total access.

The ingredients being used:

I was wondering if it was possible to transfer the files/settings from my PC to my laptop, i.e. I would basically like to copy the exact profile I have on my PC to my laptop.

My PC is HP running Windows Home Premium 32bit and my laptop is Dell running Windows Home Premium 64bit.

A:Is it possible to transfer the files/settings from my PC to my laptop?

I would drag the User folder contents to external and then import them by opening the folder, on Organize tab Select All, then drag the group to the corresponding User folder on target machine.

This avoids importing user settings (hidden AppData) files which can be a corruption path. Best to start new with fresh settings.

Some use Windows Easy Transfer but I would not mess with it as it's cumbersome and can fail. Much easier to just click and drag.

If you have the same version and want to apply a backup image to the target machine, you'd need to boot Paragon Adaptive restore CD to adjust it to the new hardware. I'd use the Acronis premium image program which comes free with any WD or Seagate HD in the mix, or free Macrium - Image your system.

A:How do I transfer files between laptop and desktop?

USB won't do (unless special software, and maybe also special cables are used), but either a firewire, or RG45 network cable would be best (there are other options also). Other things you could do are to copy the files to a disk or external drive, then transfer to the desktop. Email is another option.

I'm not sure what I need to do so I hope I am asking this the right way?

I am moving and wont have access to my desktop for roughly 4 months.

I will have a laptop with windows 7 (desktop is also running 7) and also have an external Hard Drive with plenty of space (1T I think?) that I use to back up my desktop (doing it with system images).

What would be the best way to get all my files onto my laptop and then get them back to my desktop when I set it up down the road.

I am mostly interested in Outlook Express and My Documents but I think it's time I learn how to sync everything. I have an iPad as well (I'm just a little technologically challenged)

A:How Would I Sync Laptop and Desktop or Transfer Files?

Use Macrium Reflect or something similar [I do not recommend Windows built-in backup & restore for this particular operation] to make a full image of your Data partition onto your trusted external media. Then restore that image onto your laptop. Make a full image of your laptop's data partition every week or so onto your trusted external media. When you get back home, simply restore your newest latest laptop's Data partition from your external media onto your desktop. I knowe nothing about Outlook, others will have to help you with that one.

My father have a HP Laptop with XP, and I have a XP desktop, now here's my problem, I mean, our problem.

Sometimes, when my father wants to do things on my desktop, he sends his files to my desktop through E-mail, and sometimes its large and it takes time to upload and download (we only use a dial-up modem, that's why), and when it's eating so much time, he's getting disappointed, specially when he's going to a meeting or something else. Now, are there other ways on transfering files from a laptop to a desktop or vise versa (except through e-mail, coz as I said, we only use a dial-up)?

oh, before I forget, his laptop doesn't have a floppy drive.

To transfer data, remove the disk and connect it to the other laptop using an adapter such as this or put it in an enclosure.

Once connected, the laptop will see the HDD as a removable storage and you can click and drag files from one to the other.

A:Laptop HD file transfer to desktop or another laptop

Better and much shorter question: What is the best way to move files from the hard disk of a failed laptop to another computer?

Remove the hard disk from the failed laptop. If it is SATA, as you state, take it to any desktop computer with SATA connectors. Connect it there as a secondary drive and burn your files to a DVD.

Or, you could get an external drive enclosure (laptop size), place the drive inside that and connect it to any USB port.

If the old drive is bad/unreadable, none of your or my solutions will help. In that case, you'll have to send it and a lot of your money to a specialist.

My old Acer 4745G got broken and I had my Crucial MX100 256GB SSD salvaged from it. It had Windows 10 from the free upgrade that was offered to my old PC.

Now, I'll borrow my friend's laptop (while saving up for a new one) and I plan to continue using my old SSD. Is there a way to continue using Windows 10 as if I'll not do a clean install? Or do I have no choice but to re-format?

A:Can I transfer my Windows 10 to a new laptop from an old SSD of a previous laptop?

When Windows installs or upgrades on a computer, it takes a snapshot of the hardware, chipset and motherboard and loads drivers specific to that hardware during the install. If you remove that SSD/HDD or clone it and put it into a different computer with different hardware, Windows loads it looks for the previous hardware and does not find it and it will not boot and probably BSOD.
Also. the Windows 10 Update is reserved for that computer that it was reserved on.

Hi guys,

I just learned how to crimp straight cables and crossover cables. =^.^=
(Sorry for the shallow things that make me happy haha.)

The green one is the crossover cable, the white one is the straight cable.
In class, we were told cross-cables can be used to transfer files directly between laptops (generally 2 computers) without any intermediary device (like a flashdrive). We were only able to test the cables by pinging, since we ran out of time.

I found this post, which outlines what must be done nicely, but unfortunately does not explain much further on how to do it.

If anyone can explain the outline above in a step-tutorial, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks guys!

Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?

A:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

Can anyone help,
Our old PC which was running XP was getting ready for a failure but before it died I did manage to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy the much cherished ones to my external hard drive. They are now sitting on there as a dat file. Because we didn't have the new PC yet we did not have the chance to run Vista Easy Transfer on the old PC. Does any one know how I can make this dat file become something Vista will recognise and import?

A:XP Files and settings transfer to Vista Easy Transfer

Try this . . Suggest you first copy the dat file and run the extract program on the copy

Hey guys,

So i spent the entire day trying to figure out why my Bluetooth installed fine but after one restart it disappeared and it wouldn't come back. I finally figured it out that the FN+F2 (wireless/bluetooth switches) is what enables/disabled it HAHAHAHAHA.

default (after startup): WiFi on / BT off
first time: WiFi on / BT ON yay~!
second time: WiFi off / BT on
third time: WiFi off / BT off

and repeat.

I hope this helps people with their bluetooth issues =)

Windows 8 was able to install all my Function Keys so I'm going to assume this will be the case for others. Good luck

We are buying a new laptop and need to know how to go about transferring the data from the old to the new. Is there a special cable or software program that we need to use?

A:Transfer data from old laptop to new laptop

There's a program called LapLink which allows you to pass files from one laptop (or desktop PC) to another using the LPT port. Your regular printer cable won't work though, you'll need a special parallel cable for that (can't for the life of me remember what type though...male to male i think).

There's probably other newer ways of doing it that are faster than the LPT port, so I'd look around and see what's out there.

My son has a compaq presario the laptop will not stay on it is faulty.

The laptop hard drive has lots of his data on that he wants to keep. Thesis, music files etc.,

I have loaned him my second laptop that I keep for a spare which is a Dell Latitude CPi.

Would the hdd from the Compaq work in the Dell. I know it will fit what I want to know is if it will read the hdd or will it only read in another Compaq machine.

Is there any way of geting the data off of this hdd?

A:Can I transfer laptop HDD to another laptop, and will it read it ok?

No it will not read okay. The only way to do it is to get the exact same laptop and install it there. The Compaq HDD has drivers for that specific mother board.

Maybe installing it as a slave on the good laptop?
Will it stay on at all? I have transfered files by networking a laptop. The only way it would stay on was if it wasnt touched at all.

sorry not much help

My wife has just bought a new Acer laptop running W8.1 to replace her ancient laptop. I had installed my 2nd copy of Office 2010 onto the old laptop and want to move it to her new laptop.

I was told today that this is not possible and I would need to buy a new copy, is this right?

If I can move the main copy to a new PC I do not see why I cannot move the 2nd copy to a new laptop!

Any suggestions?

A:laptop licence transfer to new laptop

It is my understanding that if you bought a retail copy (not OEM and not previously installed, it came with the computer), you can use Office on the second machine, as long as it is removed from the first. You may have to contact MS, by phone for their help.
If you cannot do this, there is software equivalent to Office, that can be downloaded for free

You can't do this as the hard drive has hardware linked SIDs (info linked to the hardware in the current laptop).

I would just do a back up of the data on another drive then format the HDD and reinstall Windows on it whilst in the new laptop

My HP dv7-1135nr entertainment notebook pc has a black screen, the techies at Friendly Computers (FC), the good folks said it was the CPU failing (1 blinking light). How can I save my Vista OS, applications and files? I was hoping to install the hard drive into my desktop (WinXP Home) and then dual boot; however, I was told by both FC and BBGS that I could not because MS ties the OS with the CPU. Another option I could try to find the same HP model laptop for sale (cheap) and then install my hdd into that laptop. As a last resort, I could install the hdd into enclosure box and use as external storage drive.

A:How do I save my laptop, vista os, apps and files?

A CPU is a chip that's fitted into a socket on the motherboard. They either work or they don't, there is no in-between. Here's an example of a Turion 64 X2: have you done so far to trouble shoot? What happens when you attempt to start the laptop? Did you try connecting it to an external monitor?

Has it anything to do with the fact that he only has msworks word processor and not msoffice word and if so, is there a way around transferring these docs to his laptop and making them work. Thanks for reading and in advance for any help offered.

I am very sorry, but if you reinstall Vista, all of your stuff will be gone. If you want to reinstall, this Forum can get you free and ISO of Vista. With the ISO you can burn a DVD and then install Vista. You will need a valid key. Once again, your stuff will be gone.
If you have a back up of just your stuff (not software) after you install Vista you can use the back up for you stuff (not Software)

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
PING <computer name>

<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
TCP/IP Netbios helper

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Hi Pjollop, I'm sure someone has much clearer picture on this, but my impression is that the traditional address book seems to have gone, part of a trend in Windows design from Vista onwards particularly.
"Today, there seems to be no substantive reason to have Windows Contacts. You can use it with other applications, such as Outlook and Windows Mail, but those applications have their own address books. Moreover, if you use another type of e-mail, such as Gmail or Yahoo! Mail, then you most surely use the address book with those."
What is the Windows Contacts Folder and Why Do You Need it?

Note that the contacts folder still exists, and clicking on a .contact entry in it produces a relevant Window.
Despite there being an entry there, the People app shows no contacts, indicating it knows nothing of the old format and does not use that folder.

"Open with" on a *.contact file shows it is associated with 'Windows Contacts', yet there seems to be neither a known program nor exe of such name.

It is also very hard to find any relevant info on this topic for Windows 10.

Fortunately I use Thunderbird... long deterred from relying on Windows email clients after MS chopping and changing - we'll have one, no we won't- we'll change the email client - we'll leave most of the client in but won't make it available- etc.

Hi so I am usually able to figure things out myself when it comes to computers just by clicking around but I need some expert help with this conundrum My old laptop a Lenovo Thinkpad had a weird issue once where it hid some of my files but when I called Netflix to fix my streaming the guy helped me make my files re-appear These files and folders can be opened edited and played just like regular files BUT the folders files laptop new hidden from laptop?! to formerly old Transferring appear lighter than other folders like the manilla is more grayish than if I created a brand new folder I didn t think this was an issue until I bought a new dell inspiron laptop this month and tried to move the files from the old computer to the new computer Example My document folder has items which means folders and loose word documents plus documents within the folders When I highlighted all the stuff in the documents folder and dragged it to my Seagate external hard drive it said that it was copying all things which included regular colored folders and the light colored folders from the hidden incident When I tried to drag all of the folders both regular and grayish colored folders into the dell laptop the greyish ones did not appear on the new computer I made sure that the external hard drive shows the hidden folders and on the old laptop if I click on the folder Transferring formerly hidden files from old laptop to new laptop?! marked Tudors Season which I bought btw the folder says that it is empty but when I open it the episodes are all there and can be watched through WMP I have no idea how to get this stuff onto my new computer if I cannot get it off of the external hard drive Someone please help me I don t want to have to re-download and pay for all of this Transferring formerly hidden files from old laptop to new laptop?! stuff or email myself a ton of files nbsp

A:Transferring formerly hidden files from old laptop to new laptop?!

They're marked hidden. It's as simple as that. All Netflix did was help you configure your old computer to display hidden files. They're still hidden. You now have to configure the new computer to show hidden files. Then I suggest you change the attributes to make them not hidden. There's no reason for files and folders you created to be marked as hidden.

I have just installed Windows Vista on my new hard drive, although I forgot to transfer about 4gbs of files I'd like to have on this hard drive from the older Windows XP hard drive.

I'm wondering if it's safe, fairly easy (;p), and ok to plug in the Windows XP disk as a slave of course (note: XP is installed on it though) and if I can transfer those files to this hard drive. Or will Vista conflict with the XP disk or any other errors, problems?

Hope I'm not too confusing ^^
Thanks for any help

A:Transfer files from XP to Vista

The fastest way to do that is with a flash drive or removable drive.

To do it over the internet you have to set permissions for the the "Guest" account on the Vista machine.

I have a laptop with windows vista home premium on it. The display broke and some buttons wont work.
Is it possible to transfer all my pics and music and OS to a desktop with no OS through usb cable link?

A:Transfer Vista And Files

In short, no and buying a laptop HD adapter and using the drive in the other computer will not do what you want either. You can transfer documents, settings, pics. and music, but the OS is where you run into problems. The other computer needs to have an OS. The USB cable would have to be a special transfer cable, or you could use a cross-over network cable, or as mentioned earlier, a 2.5 to 3.5 hard drive adapter

Iīve recently bought a new PC and chose Vista instead of XP (Big mistake) I am now trying to oraniye my files coherently. In XP transferring from one file to another was easy: right click -chose receiving file and click. In Vista I can only possibility I can find is to transfer the file first to īDocumentsīThen drag and drop to the receiving file or folder and finally delete the original file. Even allowing for the fact that this is Vista - there must be an easier way. Can anyone tell me how please. thanks in advance for any help.

A:Can I transfer files between Vista and XP

Just save everything you need on an external HDD or just use a USB flash drive

Hi ive got windows7 Dell Laptop XPS 15 L502X
how do i find out if its got built in bluetooth because i was thinking of buying some wirless speakers.

A:Does My Laptop Have Bluetooth.

Open Device Manager from the Control Panel and see if any Bluetooth adapter is listed.  It will be there if the machine has built-in Bluetooth.
If it doesn't, USB Bluetooth dongles can be acquired for very little cash outlay.

Hey guysss, i've had my Asus F6A laptop for about a month now and have only just realised i should test out the bluetooth TODAY. Unfortunately, theres seem to be no bluetooth on the laptop even though is apparently "integrated bluetooth". I opened the manual book and acording to the book when i press Fn F2 it shud turn it on. However, when i do this, this is ONLY for wireless lan, there is actually no bluetooth function together. Anybody got any ideas how to "activate" bluetooth or sumthing???

A:No bluetooth on laptop.....??

Check the BIOS to make sure it's enabled there. Verify the adapter shows up in Device Manager as well.

Hello! It seems as if this laptop does not have any bluetooth capabilities, which is a bummer! Could someone confirm that? If not then I'm looking for a way to change that, what are some solutions? I really dont want to have to have a dongle taking up a USB Port, is there a way I could install a driver? Thanks in advance, Aaron

A:Is there a way I can get Bluetooth on my laptop?

If only you could add hardware by adding software. I confirmed your laptop did not have bluetooth from the factory. Your choices are 2. Add the usb dongle: easy cheap works like a charm. Otherwise open the back of the laptop, remove the wireless card and install a dual function wifi and BT card in its place and it has to be one of those cards HP offered from the factory on the same model series or the laptop will refuse to boot up. It is actually not terribly hard to do and not terribly expensive although more than the dongle thing. Once you have Bluetooth hardware in the laptop THEN we install a driver.  Post back if you want specific instructions and we need to know what country you live in.

A:Does this laptop have Bluetooth?

Hi: Below is the link to the product specs page for your notebook. It does not come with built in bluetooth, or that feature would have been listed along with the 1x1 802.11b/g/n WLAN wireless connectivity specification. You can purchase an external usb bluetooth adapter, or if you are willing and able to take the whole notebook apart to get to the wireless card, you can switch it out for the Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn 1x1 Wi-Fi + BT4.0 HMC combo adapter, or the Realtek RT8723BE 802.11bgn 1x1 Wi-Fi + BT4.0 Combo Adapter.

I have an hp G60-445DX I want to Bluetooth pitchers & music with an LG Rumor2 it has Bluetooth but the laptop don't what I have to do to make this work

That model doesn't have a Bluetooth adapter, so you'd first have to buy and install one. Some phones require software to be installed in order to transfer data, and some simply don't support it. Others only allow transfers to and from flash memory cards. The first step should be to review your phone's manual, and contact your cell provider with any questions as features can vary by phone and provider.
