Q: How Do I Change My Logon/ User Name

I installed Win7 HP and some how named the PC and my network or user name the same.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Having just learned from an OLD post here that renaming a user account apparently doesn't change the order in which the corresponding logon icons appear at startup -- due to the order being apparently determined by when each folder was originally created, which was when this computer was first opened back in 2011 -- I want to be able, after creating a new user account, to migrate data from the account whose name I changed. I'd been previously suggested to try User Profile Wizard from Forensit.com... would this be a good idea, or can you suggest something different?

Hi everybody,

I've been trying to change my user account picture in the control panel, it worked, and it showed up in the start menu, but it didn't change in the logon screen (still dell default icon). Does anybody know what's wrong?

My system is Dell precision M6600, win7pro 64-bit. My user account has administrator right (in fact I am the only user).

Thanks!

I am trying to use a Corporate logo on my Win 7 Enterprise build default picture instead of the flower

I can replace the user.bmp for the default user profile and that works fine in that each user that logs on get the company log displayed when the are logged on or lock their PC

but the issue is when the PC is booted there is a new user or "other user" - you still get a transparent blue background - is there a way to change this ?

Windows 2003 server local policy keeps loosing the users that I set so that it can be browsed accross the workgroup. I can browse the server from the other pcs in the workgroup only for a few minutes until the policy looses the users all by itself. I cannot find anything that can explain what's going on. BTW - I can browse the other computers from the server with no problem. The local policy on the other computers don't change themselves. TY

If you see this message the following should be done on the computer containing the shared files:

Download the following and install it

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544

after installation is complete, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

Vanilla Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. It has never had a login account or password protection, and is only used in single user mode.

Yesterday, start-ups fine, no password. Today, I'm presented with the user logon widow prompting me for a password, and cannot logon to Vista!

No-one has meddled with the laptop. Don't know if SP1 was automatically downloaded

Any suggestions how this could have happened?

Yes - I know I can reset passwords using the NT Password Editor (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/).

If your newly created accounts can't log on, then it is time to check for something else.

In case there is hard drive corruption, I would check the hard drive. Right click on Drive C and choose Properties, > Tools tab > Check Now. The machine will need to reboot for the check to begin. See if the check reports of any problems.

When I tried to log on to administrator account on vista laptop this morning I got the following error massage "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." I did some research and found a potential solution: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

However the problem is that the solution needs a working administrartor account and the only account I'm able to log in is a standard one with no power to change account type or boot into admin safe mode/ do a command prompt whatsoever.

Admin account worked fine on Monday.  The kid used her (non-admin) account in the meantime.  Now it won't log into the admin account - "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded."  I've read a few other boards on this issue, so I am now doing a thorough virus scan and will include results as soon as they're available.  But I am not confident about moving forward with any of the paths I've seen laid out, and some of them don't apply if you can't access the admin account anyway, so I wanted to start a thread here (I've gotten fabulous help here several times before).  It's running Vista Home Premium SP2.  AVG 2013 Internet Security.  Can't think what other specs may be relevant, but am happy to provide whatever would be of use.  Thanks!!

I got the same message when attempting to login on Windows 7, after no previous problems or changes before shutdown the night before. It continued to loop back to the logon screen even after rebooting. I ended up having to log on in Safe Mode, then do a system restore to restore back to the last restore point, which was a system checkpoint a couple of days earlier. That fixed it, and I've had no problems since. I hope that helps.

I have a very bad problem with my PC. It started yesterday and the vista system repair came up and scanned my computer. When it finished I clicked finish and my PC restarted then it did it again..and again...and again.
Then I went into safe mode and virus scanned everything but came up with nothing. So I restarted my PC and it said The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded. So I clicked ok then my user account came up somehow. I clicked it and it took me to desktop except that half of my programs were gone and like nothing worked, all my documents, downloads, pictures were all gone. I can't do anything on that computer, can anyone help please??(I have googled it but none of the solutions work so I want to find an answer specific to my problem)

A:The User Profile Service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded

Most likely it is loading a temporary profile.

First try a system restore to see if can recover the user profile.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/

If system restore fails to load while in windows or you get errors, try it from the recovery environment http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial142.html
Here is another solution to try if SR fails to work for you, it shows you how to create a new user account, then log into the new account and copy your old profile over to the new account. This article is for XP but the process is the same for Vista. See "Moving to a new user profile"

I've searched for about a week now and have not found a solution. I followed the suggestions about the corrupt Profile and the .BAK SID, but neither are my situation.

My SID is fine - I did manage to find a temporary fix. If I delete and recreate the user in Active Directory on the server it fixes the problem. The problem is, I have 300 computers and every morning there are at least 10 - 15 users I must do this to. Not an ideal solution.

We bypassed Vista, so we had no idea that this Microsoft bug existed until last week.

A:User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

You can try to fix with Safe Mode - repeatedly tap F8 as you boot up.It may take two or three tries to start the safe mode.Continue with Safe mode and user the Administrator login. Are you able to get into the computer with Safe mode as the Administrator? **** In this context administrator is the name of a hidden account used in safe mode. Normally you would not have to use this account. It can be used to repair or create user accounts.

I have a Dell laptop that has Windows Vista. Received the below message after I typed in my password for the adminstrator account

I went into Safe Mode and was able to get to the desktop of the laptop. I attempted to go to administrative tools to try and add a new user account but I don't see an option for that.

A:The User Profile Service Failed to Logon User Profile Cannot be loaded

Hello John,

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help fix this for you. User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
If not, then I'd recommend to turn off the Guest account, delete any 501 key below found for the C:\Users\Guest account at the same registry location in the tutorial above, delete the C:\Users\Guest folder, and restart the computer. This will give you a fresh start with the Guest account as if you never turned it on.

Hey all

Long time user of bleeping computer - gonna jump on in and join the fun and games!

Anyway I work in a small local computer repair shop and recently we had LOADS of Vista and Windows 7 machines with the error

"The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"

We can repair the fault changing the profile from temporary profile path and swapped the .bak extension in registry.

But what the hell is causing it? We have had two machine back in within two weeks of initial repair. We figured windows update at first but its not a given.

cheers!

Hi, at windows start i get the message "The User Profile Service failed to logon. User profile cannot be loaded". There was no known activity last time system was up and running and it was shut down normal.

The desctop(HP) was delivered some years ago with V7 installed, ONE personal userID with admin auth. was created. Then a System repair disc was created.

What is the safest and simplest way(if any) to fix this problem and maintain the user data?(I did see support strings about this problem but they seem very complicated and confusing to me)

1. Shoud I restart system some functional key to get into safe mode or use the System repair disc and then what option?

2. Should I then logon to the default accountID(not known to me), and restore system to older backup point or shoud I try to repair the personal UserId?

Please advice

Hi Phillip,

I would like to verify whether the issue only occurs on special Windows 7 computer or on all Windows 7 computers.

I suggest checking the permission of the user profile folders and Default folder. Make sure the users has full control of their profile folders.

Meanwhile, ensure the users are the owner of the C:\Users\theirname\NTUSER.dat. Also, please put NTUSER.dat in the security software exclusion
list for testing.

Please also post in Server Forum to get more assistance.

Hey Guys so this happened to my laptop the other day and I have only got round to fixing it now, I tried a few options like editing the .bak files etc with no luck so I recovered what I could and just deleted the user profile an that seemed to of fixed the issue.

I was just wondering if their is anyway to delete the data off the old user user profile without having to format the hard drive. As its still taking up space on my hard drive even though the profile is deleted.

Many thanks in advance

Hello Damian, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Since you have already deleted the user account through the Control Panel, you should be able to just delete C:\Users\(user-name) folder for the old user account while logged in the new account.

The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I googled how to fix it. I now can't get to my photos from my other user account. How can I get to them so I can burn them on a DVD and clear up some of my hard drive? I can still see they are there in my Picasa program just can't get to them on desktop now.

Use an admin account, go to the account's picture folder you had before, and answer yes if it asks if it should modify security. ( haven't done this in a while so I can't remember the exact wording )

When a new user is created in Windows, either the first user when Windows is installed or any user later on, and the new user has signed in to Windows first time, the user profile is created and named. Any later username change does not change the name of the user profile.

An example, if my ex-wife had created a user account for me on a Windows computer she had most probably named it as "Idiot". If I then later on changed my username on that computer from "Idiot" to "Kari", my profile had remained as "Idiot".

Basically, the easiest way to change this is to create a new user account and profile with the preferred name, copy the personal files and folders from C:\Users\Wrong_Username folder to C:\Users\New_Username, and delete the user Wrong_Username completely.

In your case now you can try the method told in this tutorial: User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name

I'm the only user on my home computer, but I've started getting a sign on screen (which I never used to get)

there's a box that has user name : Administrator and password: *****

then on top of this is another box that says "logon message. The system could not log you on. make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case"

If I then replace "administrator" with my name (no password), it logs me in.

I don't know what I did to change the login protocol , but any help to undo it would be appreciated!

This may seem stupid and random but its been bothering me that i don't know how to change it. You know the user picture box on the logon screen, well it's a square and I want to change it to a circle, like on the macbooks logon. Does anyone know how to do this?

A:Windows 7 logon box change?

Welcome to the Seven Forums
Those are in IMAGE folder and Bitmap folder in authui.dll that is in C:\Windows\System32 and if you are using 64-bit it will be in both C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and C:\Windows\System32
You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can extract, edit and import the images in the authui.dll
If you need more help with this let me know.

Hi all,

I?ve changed my login screen and was wondering if anyone knows how to move the buttons (for typing in the password, one for my finger print reader and the switch user button) to a different part of the screen. I just want to lower them a couple inches so they?re not on a good part of the picture. And a bonus would be if anyone would know how to change the size of said buttons, but all I?m worried about is moving them.

Thanks,
qbit

P.S. -- Does anyone know where the screen that loads when returning from Hibernation is located at? Which .dll?

A:Logon screen change

I dont think you can move the buttons.

BUT there are Softwares which allow you to make your own Login Screens, perhaps you could use them and make your own ones with the buttons placed wherever you want.

A:How to change xp logon screen?

You need to go into Control Panel, and hit the button on the left to switch to classic view. Then open up User Accounts, and change the way users log on and off. Then check "Use the welcome screen" and "Use fast user switching" back on (or just do the first one, your call). Then log off and you should have the normal XP logon page.

Hi

I have windows XP Home Edition and recently had to reboot using an XP boot disk because Windows would not mount on startup. Since I did this, I lost all my personal settings and I cannot access or delete my old account, the files of which seem to be sitting on the hard drive, inaccessible (a lot of the folders are there, but they say they have 0kb in them and are inaccessible.) unfortunately, I don't have any save points on system restore, so at this point, i would like to delete this account if I can't access it or retreive my mail from outlook from that account. any suggestions?

thanks!

Hopefully I can find some help here.

I have XP SP2 and have two users on it. Both have Admin Rights if that makes a difference . When I do a log off to log back in as the other user, the password field does not contain the blinking cursor bar so that I am able to type the password. Even clicking on it, doesn't change anything.

I can shut the computer off using the quicklink in the left corner. But that is it. On the reboot, everything is fine until I try to log off/on as the other user.

Is there a patch that is missing?

If I try to logon to any user accounts it first gives me the 'welcome' message like normal while it loads up but then says 'logging off' and returns to the screen where you choose what account. Only the admin account works now. I normally only use User accounts because I heard it's safer.

Just before this happened I had a virus w32 ramnit.a on one of my user accounts. I used to McAfee and Malwarebytes in both normal and safe mode and it seems to have gotten rid of it (no more warnings every 5 seconds) but now I can't access any User accounts. Is the virus doing this??

A:User Accounts won't logon

It's possible - I don't know much about viruses either. Sometimes removing them is only half the job and the other half is repairing whatever damage they caused. I'm not familiar with the virus you had or what it does or how it must be removed (or, for that matter, if you are truly free from it and any other infections despite the reports from those two programs).

But I do know someone here who knows a great deal about malware and malware removal and I will request that she visit this thread and see if she can help confirm you really are free from the virus and possibly repair any damage it caused or files it left behind that weren't cleaned even it the virus itself was actually removed. I'm not certain when she will visit, but possibly later today or at worst in a day or two.

In the meantime, I don't want to do anything else to address the problem (what I might normally do in such a situation were the virus not involved) until we hear what she has to say so that we do not make things worse. I recommend you use the computer as little as possible in the meantime and don't make any major administrative changes.

Please be patient until we hear from her.

Thanks and good luck!

I've had a couple of complaints from a user where I work who cannot login wirelessly using their laptop. They can however logon fine if they plugin an ethernet cable. Once they have logged in, they can use the wireless connection just fine.

What might cause this? I'm struggling to troubleshoot it.

Thanks

A:User cannot logon wirelessly

You must be in a Domain/Networked login environment as WiFi vs wired networking is not germane to user login otherwise.

I think you're in a catch-22; you need the network to login but need login to access the network.

Fix the GPO policy for WiFi users to allow local login to the machine.
This will give the ability to then MAP drives to the infrastructure using the WiFi connection.

@ work we use a combination of Vista & XP pro in a Server 2003 AD environment. While connected to the network, a pc/laptop can have unlimited users logging into it (ex: conference room pc). When outside the network, only the last three users to log in (while connected to the network) are able to actually log on through XP's domain logon screen (Username, Password, Domian).

Is there a registry setting that can increase this user limit?

I have a laptop with (5) users that connect to the internet w/ an EVDO card then VPN back into our network, and I need to be able to have all (5) logon to the computer. Right now only the three most recent to log on while the laptop was connected directly to the companies domain are recognized.

Thanks in advance for any tips and suggestions.

A:Clear last logon user name

Hi guys,
yes I also understood this correctly at the first place. Damn standard answers. Was just searching for the same solution and the internet is full of removing the last logged on user forever which is one of the most annoying features.
What I've done now is to search for my own logon name in the registry and found following key which gave me the desired result right away after I've deleted it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\LastLoggedOnUser
This is at least now working on Windows 7 SP1.
This gives me ONE TIME a blank logon screen which asks for username and password.
Maybe my comment on this was still helpful. At least for other guys searching the web for this.
Cheers
Robert

As small add-on to this:
Recgnized that this works well when logging off and logging on but the rebooting the computer the local admin account is shown on the logon. To really get the username and password field after the reboot do not delete the value rather remove it's data (empty
string).

I have an unusual problem:

(Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2)

I have a user, JANESMITH, who was recently married. Because she is a remote user, we requested that she return her laptop to us at the Help Desk so that we could get her signed onto the network properly with her married name logon, JANEJONES.

Signing on with JANEJONES works fine, there are no errors. However, I am unable to copy JANESMITH's documents, etc to JANEJONES's profile because there is no profile for JANEJONES under C:\Documents and Settings\

JANEJONES does have all of JANESMITH's shortcuts on her desktop, her favorites and her documents, but there is no profile (that I can find).

What could cause this and is it correctable?

A:User Can Logon to PC, but has no profile

Im Assuming you just changed the logon name via the active directory?

This being so, location and storage of profile will probably not change, only the logon name. So all profile information will still be held in JANESMITH folder within documents and settings.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

In Control Panel I went into User Accounts>Change the way users log on or off. I unchecked the box that says Use the Welcome screen. Now instead of having to click an icon and then enter my password there is a dialog box called Logon to Windows. In a box in that box labelled User Name is my name already displayed. Below that in another box I enter my password. But the whole reason for not using the Welcome screen is to increase security by not displaying the user name and having to type it in along with the password.

Is there a way to not have your user name displayed in the: Logon to Windows dialog box?

Thanks,

royeo

A:How to not have your user name displayed at logon

There are a couple of ways to do it either by editing the registry directly or from a command window, neither of which you should do unless you understand what you are doing. From a command window, paste these command lines one at a time and hit enter:

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /V DontDisplayLastUserName /t REG_SZ /d 1 /f

REG ADD HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DontDisplayLastUserName /t REG_DWORD /d 00000001 /f

The change should be effective on next logon. Changing the data from "1" to "0" reverses the change.

Well, my problem is that when I start up my computer, it logs onto one user account, "James". That particular account has a password on it, but it still logs onto it without asking anything.

So, anyone that knows how to restart a computer (hopefully everyone) can just get into all the files and, more importantly, the administrator account of the computer.

I've looked for a setting to display the Welcome Screen at startup, but nothing seems to work.

A:XP User Logon Error!!!

It sounds like a machine that was not activated before the timeout period, except that Safe Mode is usually still accessible.

You'll need to boot from your XP CD and do a repair installation.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

In short----->

All you do is boot from the CD. When it asks if you want to repair and to press "R", don't. Continue with the installation just like you were installing for the first time.

You will then get a license agreement and it will ask you to press F8 to agree. Right after that screen, you will see a list of Windows installations that setup found. It will ask if you want to repair it. Read the directions on that page!!!

Then, you will actually press "R" this time and XP will re-install. Easy as pie.

When done, you will be back to your familiar desktop with everything looking just like it did before. But all your Windows Updates are gone and you will need to get those again.
