I am using Windows 7 Pro on a Dell laptop, and frequently use the attwifi accesspoints at Starbucks. I've noticed that nearly every time I go to a different Starbucks, upon connection to the access point, I get the Network type (home/work/public) dialog, where I select public and the dialog creates a new network location like "attwifi 1" "attwifi 2" and so on.. I realize I can merge and delete the additional "attwifi x" locations, but am wondering WHY these get created?? Is windows tracking the AP MAC address to cause these additional network "locations" to be created? and is there any way to stop it from doing this?? no big deal if its just Windows trying to be secure.. My OS of choice is Ubuntu, but my work requires me to use Windows currently..
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Quite normal. And yes, Win 7 has a table of addresses for this purpose.
You can have Win 7 autoconnect to your attwifi location if you desire.
I frequent several Starbuck shops. And yep, there is a different one for each router.
Personally, I like the feature.
I m running Windows and I am getting a BSoD whenever I connect to the wireless at my University In fact in only happens in a specific building at my University and happens more often in a certain room If I use my WiFi in any other building at home or use a wired connection then I am free from BSoDs The error message is quot Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart We re just collecting some error info and then we ll restart for you x using WiFi in Specific when BSoD Locations complete If you d like to know more you can search online later for the error DRIVER IRQL NOT BSoD when using WiFi in Specific Locations LESS OR EQUAL Smb driver Intel sys quot I have already uninstalled and reinstalled my wireless adapter drivers and also uninstalled and replaced some of my other drivers in the process I am not sure what is causing this problem and how I could only be receiving BSoDs from connection to the WiFi in specific locations nbsp
Try the latest wireless driver from the PC manufacturer's web site.
Try the driver directly from Intel's web site.
I am having a problem with my Toshiba NB505 Netbook - running Windows 7 Starter. I can connect fine at home to wifi- and also at my local public library. However I was unable to connect at a motel I was at recently - and had the same problem when I visited a different local library.
To be more exact, I was able to connect ok at these 2 locations - but there was no internet access. From reading, I suspect a 'DNS' issue of some sort, but I don't know how to go about remedying it.
Can someone please help?
If you have DNS failures at certain spots, you can fill in some known good DNS hosts like 188.8.131.52 (Google) to get around whatever the broken value is.
You'll have to hand fill in the rest of the stuff that DHCP from the WiFi unit gave you by hand as well. You can get that by opening a dos prompt and typing in "ipconfig"
Then hand fill in the ip address, netmask and gateway, but use 184.108.40.206 for the DNS in your adapter TCP/IP settings it should work.
You can also do it entirely from the command line using this to get interface names:
netsh interface ip show config
Then use this to set just the DNS:
netsh interface ip set dns "WiFi Connection" static 220.127.116.11
The "WiFi Connection" value will be the name of your wifi adapter, whatever that is, change it to match what you found using the first command...
My wireless connection only connects when the network cable is connected. If I unplug the RJ45, the wireless won't connect. This is so dumb.
It sounds very much as though your wireless isn't working at all. The only other thing I can think of is have you got Bridging between your Cable and Wireless enabled? If so try disabling it, it may be that your Wireless is relying on your wired adapter for connection settings.http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/33346-another-windows-network-oddity.html
I am using Vista Home Premium and connect to the Internet via a 3G modem as we have no telephone here in Spain where we live. The conne3ction is good and gives me no serious problems.
I have one question to ask regarding Network Locations. Each time I connect to the Internet it creates another Network Location. At the moment it has reached 113. I found this whilst hovering my mouse over the Network Icon and looking in the Network and Sharing Centre/Customise/Merge or delete locations. Now this is not causing any problems with my connection but I think there must besome means of stopping this happening and filling up the space rapidly in that folder.
Can anyone advise on this please, or is it normal and I should leave well alone?
You get the Network Location request is beacuse you said you use a 3G Modem to connect to internet. So everytime you connect to internet your ISP assigns you with different IP address & address Classes. So vista thinks that this is a new network and askes you to Save the network location. You can either request your ISP to give you a Static Ip address which i dont think they would do or you can stop THe Network Location thing poping up by doing some modifictions check the following link to do so.
Set Vista Network Location Category Script Code
Hope this Helps
I have two domain contollers at different locations with external ip's. The two servers are running windows 2003 sp2 and i'm tring to set them up so that active directory is replicated between the two severs or if possible have the two networks able to communicate with each other. is this possible?
So it seems yet again Microsoft changed the merge networks feature (Which IMHO is still necessary) and as far as I can tell has been removed in M3. Going to Network & Sharing Centre, it lists networks, whereas there is no icon nor a link to merge locations. It's mostly a visual issue, however also partly operational as many networks are virtual devices in my case (OpenVPN/SixXS/Gogo6/VirtualBox/VMware) and it's rather annoying they're separate.
I'm still searching for the See Full Map.http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/2801-merging-network-locations.html
I need a way to network three computers at three different locations for our small business. One at home, one at the office, and one more @ my partners house. The software we use is designed to be used over a network, but we need a way to link them at three different locations. All three locations have broadband connections and the data being shared is in small file sizes. It is an older DOS based accounting system. Any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Lucas
I don't think this is possible unless all three locations are right next to each other...
anybody know how to remove "Network Locations"?
Can't seem to make This PC Tweaker run on a new setup.
OK I am running an MSI netbook with windows starter please bear with me as I am a bit of a windows noob I had the machine setup so that I could see all the machines on my home network connected down the side under 'network' They all belonged to the same workgroup and I could download and transfer files when all of a sudden they vanish I have tried enabling file sharing and looking at the workgroup but to be honest I am at a complete loss everything was working fine Lost locations network and then everything on the network vanished apart from a printer I can ping the ip address Lost network locations of the server where Lost network locations all the files I am sharing are and if I put the local ip address into chrome I get a page I was playing with in a web folder coming up but that is it If anyone has any idea as to what Lost network locations might be going on please let me know
What anti virus software do you have installed?http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/102774-lost-network-locations.html
Those last two--where could they have come from?
Do you have a WiFi NIC in your machine?
Looks like nearby wireless networks from neighbors that you're now picking up?
I do not know where to look to find list of network locations. In Vista I could find and delete network locations. My network name has changed and while it shows up properly when connected via wireless, when I use the Lan connection it shows up under the old network name. When I try to leave my homegroup while in public mode....it says cannot leave homegroup. I know this is probably simple. What am I doing wrong?
I'm not sure i understand this, your network name, as in the SSID name of your wireless network? If so the only place i know that shows your SSID is in the listing in the network icon next to the speaker icon (bottom right). When you connect via LAN, are you saying the SSID that you can see from the location i mentioned, reverts back to the old SSID name?http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/59093-managing-network-locations.html
I just recently bought a new Lenovo laptop running Windows 8.1. When I open the file explorer and go to "this PC" section (where it shows my documents, music, devices, etc), under the "network locations" section there are a bunch of names that I don't recognize, and have no clue what they are. Some examples are jose-pc, maryay-pc, rhocode-dev1, zeorge-hp, as well as several others.
I'm not a very computer-savvy person, so I don't even know what the network locations section is even for to begin with, but does anyone know why all of these random things are in my network locations? I bought the laptop directly from Lenovo, so it's not like it's used or anything.
Probably some nearby devices your WiFi caught, doesn't mean it has connected with them.http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/57837-unknown-network-locations.html
I have been having this 'problem' quite a few weeks now... As you can see from the screenshot, the icon of the 2nd PC under my network location is damaged. That is the same PC I took the screenshot from and the one I'm using right now. How can I fix this icon-display bug?
Hi, it's not exactly an problem but I want to know if there was anything like this on previous windows versions or is it something new on win 8.
I have 3 desktops at home, 2xwin7 + a new one with 8.1. I found on the one with 8.1 that a pc which was off was under Network Locations, I found that if I click it, it powers on said pc, like a "wake on LAN". however I haven't found any reference on the web to this kind of functionality on win 7 or 8.
I had a few DLNA servers (originating from the user accounts on my other desktop) showing up on my laptop under network location. At the time, I right clicked some of these and selected to remove the device. Which made them disappear from the network locations. My intention at the time but I now want to restore these.
The difference to the tutorial linked is I didn't completely suppress the feature via the process above. As I had left some DLNA servers alone and they still show (such as from our windows 7 laptop). How do I go about adding the missing ones back in?

I have encountered a problem, one which I cannot seem to solve. I have several shared folders and media streaming enabled on my PC which originally displayed under 'This PC' as a Network Location, however now it is not displayed there at all and the only place it is shown is under 'Network' where is it listed as a Media Device, I have played around with a bunch of settings from the shared folders themselves to the media streaming service to no avail. Could someone please enlighten me with an explanation as to why this is happening as well as how I can resolve it.
Thanks in advance!
Not sure how this might have happened Right Click any where in This PC.. choose add a network location.
In the Type the location of the item \\Name of the shared device you want to open.
Then name the shortcut. Double click the shortcut it will take you to the device. I did this 3 or four times then the computers started showing up.
When I attempt to add one of my websites (Request Rejected) to network locations -
i receive an error. Depending upon how i attempt to do it I either get
"network address can not be found"
"invalid, may be password protected, of may contain a \ or /"
one old program I use is frontpage
if I select "open site" - I get an error using the website url
other than telling me not to use FrontPage - are there any ideas?
I used to (pre-windows 8) be able to add a website as a network location.
windows 10 still has the option.
but it does not seem to work
Would it be possible to hide the 'Network Locations' in the 'My Computer' section in 8.1?
Do you mean to remove "Network" from the navigation pane?

I only have this problem with Win Pro x regardless of the version build numbers After making a few connections to my network location that I add in this case a WebDAV file server for school I use Windows will eventually decide that the Adding Fails Locations Network Always location doesn't exist anymore If I remove the drive and add it again via quot Add a Network Location quot no matter what address I enter the location quot doesn't exist quot The wizard will start I give it an address and after a few moments it tells me it Adding Network Locations Always Fails cannot find the drive while the Windows Security box's bar is still moving from left to right trying to connect If I use a third-party program it will work at first like above but after I connect so many times after system shut downs these programs will eventually stop working too but they at least retain a cache so I can view my drive offline this is because Windows Explorer decides again the location doesn't exist If I decide to boot via my Win install it works as I would expect it to I've done everything I can think of to rule it out including Disable AV suiteMake sure networking related services are runningUse DMZ on router briefly to rule it outUsing Windows TroubleshooterDisable firewall Interesting enough this is a relatively clean install My first Win install had huge problems with the v update so I formatted and installed Win v This problem exactly the same occurred with my first install too eventually just ceasing to work like now At this point I'm lost and don't know if this can be fixed or if this is another problem to add to the list of quot Windows killed networking in general quot Here's a CBS log if anyone is curious but fixing with an install wim repair doesn't change it nor does it probably help that I change my login background which I know also makes the system find errors It'd be great if this is something that can be fixedhttp://www.tenforums.com/network-sharing/32972-adding-network-locations-always-fails.html
I am running Win7 64-bit on my main PC. I also have a fileserver running Fedora 9/Samba that houses all our documents, video, music, and pictures. I have mapped network drives to these locations. I have no issues at all accessing the remote shares, either through UNC path, or through the networked drives.
When I go to the indexing configuration, the mapped drives do not appear as a target to pick for indexing. Also, I can't add these folders to the respective library folders, because I get an error indicating that the location is not indexed. So I'm hoping that if I can index these locations, I can then add them to my library.
To index a network folder or drive, you must right-click on it first and select "Always Available offline".
Then it can be indexed, and added to libraries as well.
Simply right-click a folder, click "always available offline" and after sync finishes (or meanwhile) you can add it to the Libraries, no need to tamper with indexing options.
Hope it helps
Today after installing a new Asus router which is a replacement for Merge delete or locations network an old quot G quot version linksys everything seemed to be working as expected I noticed that Merge or delete network locations my network name showed up in a few area's with a after the name Reading some articles it seems that this is pretty common with Merge or delete network locations win and not harmful but can be changed by removing the The change was made but while doing it when you left click your network where you can change the name as well as icon there is a button that says Merge or delete network locations Its in this location where my question comes in there are three connections listed the first being NB -WXDL test Managed the next are both the same which is my network name The only thing different that I can see is the first is listed as not in use unmanaged the last one is showing in use unmanaged From searching the internet about this it seems that the ones not being used can be safely deleted I'm not one to do so blindly and wonder what your view is on this subject Also as for the first network location name I have no idea what this is or how it got here This laptop I bought new and have had it for plus years
Deleting a network that way is harmless. The only damage you can do is if you delete the one that's in use then you need to enter the network key again, same for the other networks.http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/347999-merge-delete-network-locations.html
i am working on setting up a new work network across 50 different locations with user having specific rights. initially i can setup a pc using all the customize settings and create an image disk to install it in all the PC at different locations .. i am trying to figure out what is the best way to make any changes in future ... i dont want to remotely access all of them to give permissions or take permissions in future.. help please
You will be using a domain controller and depending on the network connection between the locations, you may need to have a domain controller at each location.http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/254974-setting-up-new-work-network-across-50-locations.html
Hi there !
SSD just died on me so I had to replace it and reinstall Windows.
I have a QNAP 469 Pro server in RAID5 (4 x 2Tb) on my network that usually works great. Aslo I have an external USB3 WD 3Tb attached to the QNAP.
Now, since I reinstalled Windows, After I boot up , all my network drives don't come online for some reason. I can see them but they are offline. But if I click on them to get in , they come online just fine.
Any ideas on how to get them to go online automatically at boot ??

Hi there .. When you go in to Network Property's .. Do you have the box ticked that says connect automatically when in range ?http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/337682-network-locations-wont-come-online-boot.html
I'm using windows bit and MS office professional plus excel version bit I have excel pinned on the start menu and have pinned an excel document to the submenu recent documents The issue is that it was on a network I no longer have access to I can't unpin it which is annoying to me because I should be able to unpin it and every time I accidentally click on it my computer takes a long time to respond in which windows is presumably searching for it I've tried pressing the pin button next to it that says unpin I've tried right clicking on it and clicking quot unpin from this list quot I've searched for locations from remove network docs pinned Can't the shortcut found one that may or may not have been it deleted it It's still there I've tried clicking properties and hitting Can't remove pinned docs from network locations quot hidden quot that pops up an error message I tried setting Can't remove pinned docs from network locations it to open with firefox the X in the icon just winked at me somehow I tried dragging it to the desktop My computer thought about that one a long time Then it again realized it wasn't there and told me so three times I've tried doing some of these steps without any network connection wired or wireless in the hopes that my computer would realize quot the ip address the path the immortal document xls quot absolutely can't be found but it still failed to remove it I should hit restart just to see if my computer just needs a good nap before finally coming to the acceptance phase of it's spreadsheet grief After that the only step I can think of is to fly back to Chicago bust into my old job plug it in and put the network admin into a chokehold until he lets my computer back on the network Which I don't want to do because he and my former boss are nice people and also plane tickets are expensive but more than that I want this little icon gone
PS. Rebooted. Still there. Also forgot that every time I boot windows, an error message pops up along the lines of "could not connect to your network locations." Any suggestions for how to get my computer to forget that too?http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/380415-cant-remove-pinned-docs-network-locations.html
Let me explain with a couple of screenshots. I just upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 and now I get a bunch of useless shortcuts in Windows Explorer when I try to open a file, or if I just plainly go to My Computer. Stuff like this:
Can I hide the links circled in red?
The reason I don't need them there is because now I have to constantly scroll down to get to the files and folders that I actually need. (And if I fold them up with that little arrow, they come right out after a while.) It just wastes time!
Here's how to remove "Folders" from This PC.

Hope this helps some,
I have a number of PCs connecting to a server where we house our personal folders. The server also houses music, basketball games, our photos, applications (like drivers and updates etc). On XP and vista I could update shell folders in registry to point each of the various locations (Like My Videos, My Documents, My Pictures etc), to a location on the server.
I updated the shell folder locations in registry only to find that it says location is unsupported because the network locations are not indexed
I have turned indexing off because it is a total waste of resources. We have everything stored on separate drives by category of item. For us, sedarching is not required, stuff is easy to find.
So how can I point the shell folders to a network location without turning on indexing?
Hey Yanta - welcome to 7 Forums.
I was thinking you could add the network location to a w7 library but after trying I get the same error about indexing. I have indexing turned off too. Windows help says -
If the network folder is not indexed, an easy way to index it is to make the folder available offline.
Personally I have this turned off too which doesn't work for me but might work for you.
We're trying to use XCOPY to copy files/folders from UNC paths on our network to Windows 7 workstations. In XP, we used to be able to run a command, likexcopy \\servername\share "C:\program files\program name\" /E /Ythis would successfully copy files from a network location to the workstation. I realize that the security model has changed in Windows 7 but I'd like to find a way to get this to run as a batch file for automation sake. Does anyone have any suggestions?Orange County District Attorney
use robocopy... it is built into windows 7 and is very powerful... here is a example of the command that i use:

I opened my "This PC" folder on my desktop and noticed that under Network Locations, there are two items that are named after email addresses. when I check properties I get an error say that they cant display properties. when I open them, they say that the folders are empty.
the addresses are:
see below or attached
they are not familiar addresses and will not delete when I try to remove them.
Those are media center servers. Have you placed your computer on a network, such as a public hotspot where you might have picked up media center servers from other users?http://www.tenforums.com/network-sharing/52697-why-do-strange-email-addresses-appear-network-locations.html
I travel a lot and use public wireless networks and resort to using my iPhone every time I need a connection away from home or when I am often having problems with the service of my internet provider.
My problem is the saved network connections that I will most probably never use again and also, every time I connect my iPhone it starts up a new network connection (currently network 27). How do I manage these network connections? How can I delete or merge
In Windows 8, I just used to click the network icon and click the option for managing network connections (or something quite similar, I'm only recalling from memory at the moment.)
Hi I've read multiple threads over the internet but it always ends in the same story I have computers A B C all windows professional All are part of the same home group I have a memory stick called Drive F I want to share Drive F which is located on Computer C with Computer B But I don't want Computer network people: specific other Share locations Windows No with 7: A to see it I can easily share with quot EVERYONE quot and all computers see the drive and can access it When I try to change Windows 7: Share with specific people: No other network locations EVERYONE to Computer B using Advanced Sharing using the permissions button by I clicking the quot Add quot a quot group or user name quot a box comes up allowing me to select groups or users quot From this location quot which you can then try to select a computer Unfortunately I only see the computer I'm on computer A This is where I get stuck every time I can't figure out how to get Computer C to show other network locations in that box so I can pick Computer B only Ideas hugely appreciated Frank
You can't hide the share, the best you can do is restrict access to it. I don't use homegroups, so I don't know if it allows that kind of access restriction. If you decide to use workgroups, I can help you configure your shares so only certain people can access the files/folders.http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/187154-windows-7-share-specific-people-no-other-network-locations.html
How can I get rid of this files/shortcuts showing in Network Locations located in My Computer?
This image might explain more
If I try deleting the files, it deletes the file in the C drive as well.
Option 2 method 1 in the link below is to unmap network locations, not so sure about network folders which have no drive letter but the tutorials should help.
Map Network Drive
Whenever I open file explorer, I have to wade through a massive, massive list of speakers, keyboards, email servers, printers, and all other things that I only ever use on my desktop. So when I plug a flash drive into my laptop, it takes me 1 or 2 minutes to find the stupid thing. When I try to organize the "This PC" pane, it reloads the network drives and resets everything on reboot.
How make I the network things go away permanently? I can find no setting.
No you do not have to go through a list of devices in File Explorer. You are doing something wrong.http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/57884-how-make-windows-explorer-not-show-network-locations.html
I tried the artikel of Lawrence Abrams, work fine until i want to create file storage on a netwpork drive (NAS) mapped as a drive.
I want to acces my email from different computers , now i have two storages local on each computer.
Seems not to work on a network drive, any suggestions how to achieve this?
I normally have a C:/, H:/, J:/, N:/, X:/, and Y:/ drive, but in a mysterious phenomenon I have lost all of those. I have work to save on those drives, and they are inaccessible. I have attempted to go to Disk Management, but I am denied "access rights," presumably as I am not a licensed IT guy. If there is anything that can be done, I need it done.
You needn't be a licensed (or even unlicensed) IT guy to use Disk Management, but I am guessing that you are using a work computer that is probably in a domain and you will need to get help from your IT department.
This USB Wifi adapter seems to be a MEGA performer --Lovely finally to be able to THINK of getting rid of LAN cables all over the place.
I've no probs with decent HD Movie streaming from a SERVER with one of these (I unplugged the LAN and inserted the USB Wifi adapter into a USB3 slot --note this needs genuine USB3 to work at proper speed). My Home router can deliver 802.11ac so no probs there.
Brilliant piece of kit and NO MORE CABLES !!!!!!. Wifi will soon be able to deliver comparable speeds to LAN especially for HOME networks. !!!
Here's the UK Link but is available in US and Europe. In any case it's delivered (in my case) by Amazon S.A.R.L (Luxembourg) so no tax !!!. even though I ordered from UK web site --they will ship outside UK tax free.

Hi, You have a couple of options as I see it please try these steps might help you to fix your issue. 1) Disconnect the Battery & Adapter then press & hold the power button on Notebook for 30 seconds then turn on the unit and check if the Wireless light turns on. 2) Go to Device manager then uninstall the wireless drivers and restart the unit and check if the light turns on. 3) Please update the Bios & Wireless driver from HP website. 4) If you are comfortable reseating the wireless card which will be on the back panel off your unit you could try this steps as well. A few day before the wifi disappers, my laptop had started to lag every few seconds. I tried to find a solution for this problem, but it was of no avail. After the last time I restarted it, it did not recognize any wifi or network. the upper keys have all stopped working, and the screen has become very bright. Moreover, troubleshooting does not recognize any problem.I'd appreciate any help.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/My-wifi-has-completely-disappeard-and-no-network-or-wifi/td-p/5845674
Network share drive folders disappear from "Favorites" on boot up and at random intervals. These drives are not mapped using "Map a network drive" because when shared with other people, it's easier to right click the file and get the entire network path vice a drive letter which may not be the same.
I have two routers I usually connect to work and home and each have wireless access That means there are essentially network locations I have listed merged failing with start Task Scheduler to network task locations I have merged each respective network location wired and wireless into their own singular network location - quot Work quot and quot Home quot I also have set up two tasks one is set to run only when connected to quot Work quot and the other to quot Home quot The st maps network drives and the nd disconnects the drives So essentially when I get to work and log in the scheduler should attempt to map the network drives When I go home and log in again it should disconnect the mapped drives Currently if I plug in to a physical LAN connection this works however Task Scheduler failing to start task with merged network locations if I'm running on wireless the task scheduler doesn't trigger the scripts I don't know if this has to do with the fact that I'm using merged network locations and it's only using ONE of the profiles or whether it has to do with something else So to summarize the scripts themselves are working just fine - it's the quot Start only if the following network location is available quot condition that fails when using merged networks and wireless

I've been putting up with this problem since Vista but now that I bought a new Win machine I decided that I would ask here so I can hopefully resolve it once and for all I have an old computer that I've repurposed as a file locations your as local declare to "inside How network"? server for all the other machines on my network and one of the things How to declare locations as "inside your local network"? I do with it is How to declare locations as "inside your local network"? to put various program installer files on it so I can install them to the other machines without having to download the same file over and over However when accessing these remote files from any machine except those still running XP I get an extra warning box telling me that the file quot is in a location outside your local network quot It's not but for some reason these machines think it is I've Googled various fragments of text from these warning boxes each Windows version has slightly different wording for this warning the screen shot I've attached is from the Win machine I happen to be on right now but no matter which variant I search for everything I find about getting rid of this warning is either geared toward similar warnings given by MS Access for remote databases or for marking external Web sites as trusted How do I tell Windows How to declare locations as "inside your local network"? that this local file server is in fact local and not in need of these repetitive and annoying warnings
I solved this problem on my computer by putting my ABSOLUTELY TRUSTED subnets in the Intranet Zone. The settings apply to Internet Explorer and to File Explorer - basically any connection(s) to machines in those subnets. They permit me to browse to my router and printers with Internet Explorer protected mode off, and to transfer files from server and workstation shares to my computer using File Explorer or mapped drives without the warnings or having to 'unblock' files after they were transferred.
IMPORTANT: The Intranet Zone is the most trusted and least protected zone. DO NOT put any subnets or IP addresses in this zone unless they are TOTALLY under YOUR control. That includes ANY public server, web site, subnet, or IP address.
1) Select 'Control Panel'/'Internet Properties'/'Security' tab.
(Alternatively, open Internet Explorer and select 'Tools'/'Internet Options'/'Security' tab.)
2) Highlight 'Local Intranet' and click 'Sites'.
3) Set the following:Uncheck 'Automatically detect intranet network'.
Check 'Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones'.
Uncheck 'Include all sites that bypass the proxy server'.
Check 'Include all network paths (UNCs)'.
4) Click 'Advanced'
5) Uncheck 'Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone'.
6) In the field labeled 'Add this web site to the zone:', add your local, private subnet using an asterisk for a network mask and click 'Add'. E.g. If your home (local) network is 192.168.25.0 with a mask of 255.255.255.0, enter '192.168.25.*' (without the quotes).
Notes for adding to this list:Entries can be: Individual IP addresses (e.g. '192.168.5.25', etc.),
Class C subnets (e.g. '192.168.27.*'),
Class B subnets (e.g. '172.16.*.*'), or
Class A subnets (e.g. '10.*.*.*') You can add as many addresses as you need to the list
It can be handy add the address of a VPN subnet to the list if it is also private and you TOTALLY trust it.
7) Close out with 'Close'/'OK'/'OK' and close the Control Panel (or Internet Explorer).
Please reply back with your experience with these settings.

Okay, usually when you hover over the networks listed and available from the taskbar icon, you get a nice little window with a few helpful tidbits of info for each listed network when you mouse action hover over the names. It tells you the encryption type, and the SSID, plus a few other details.
Well, on my computer, the information is appearing behind the list to where I can't read it. The network list is overlapping on top of the hover info. Talk about annoying. I searched for various things on google, with no luck. I tried:
Windows 7 network list obscuring hover details, and various other combinations to no avail. Anyone here have a clue what might be breaking this? I'd like the hover details to appear properly so I can read it. In the meantime I've installed the free version of Acrylic Wifi to work around the issue. Thanks.
The problem must be driver based or an add-on program because I don't get any of that. All I get is the name and whether it's connected or not. Check that your adaptor driver is up to date and/or the program you use to display the data is up to date.
Forgot to mention:
Dell adds "bloatware" to their PCs to "improve the user's experience" so I would check Dell Support for your specific model and look for updates.

I have two disks configured: First C: is a active partition SDD. Second one is D:, which is old active disk and used now only for backups.
I'm starting with selecting no folders at all in the "indexed Locations".
<Screen shot will follow>
Next I select disk C. As result not the folder from disk C is taken over but from disk D:

I have no chance to select any folder from disk C.
Index Rebuild does not help.
Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.
You can go into IPv4 Properties of this NIC, then you can use the Alternate configuration tab to set up the alternate IP, or use the Advanced tab to add a static IP/gateway/DNS etc. to TCP/IP.http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/29158-specific-network-settings-based-wifi-network.html
I'm building a subscription wifi network for our area.
Cisco Aironet 1550 series: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5679/ps11451/data_sheet_c78-641373.html
Proxim Orinocor series: http://www.proxim.com/products/enterprise-wireless-lan-wi-fi-mesh/orinocor-wi-fi-mesh-series
The Proxim seems like the better product, and sells for a bit less.
Will I need to purchase anything else besides several of these for the network? I'm assuming the 'home' router connects to a PC (or the PC via the gateway address) for managing the network.
Thanks allot for your insight.

Sorry if this has already been discussed. Couldn't find on a search.
I have a small secured network in my office with a modem/router networking three computers wirelessly. I would like to add another router that would allow clients in the waiting room of my office to have internet access. Could you assist me in a setup or map? I already have a wireless Linksys router available to use as the second router.
Are those in the waiting room to be allowed into OR forbidden access to your Lan systems?
You already have
to Isolate the W.R from your lan, connect
modem---router----your.lan.systems (assumed 192.168.1.x or 0.x)
+---new router (new channel+ssid+no encryption)
set LAN addresses and DHCP for 192.168.10.x
add firewall rule to ALL your existing LAN systems to deny src address range=192.168.10.0 thru 10.255
I just got a new CPU (and motherboard), and just finished reinstalling windows. So it defaults to 1280x1024 (when for the last year or two Ive used 1164x864). So Im working in this new resolution and suddenly there's this bright white line from the top to bottom of my screen, about an inch wide right in the middle. Then everything goes black. Sort of like an old TV shutting off. This happened twice in about 15 minutes, NEVER experienced this before.
I switched back to the lower resolution and it hasnt happened for quite a while now. Is my graphic card (9800 Pro) just not capable of running that high. Or whats going on?
That is indicative of a deflection failure in the monitor.
The horizontal deflection also provides the drive for the high voltage (EHT) for the screen, so when it fails, the entire picture fades out as there is no EHT to accelerate the electrons to illuminate the screen phosphor.
The higher resolution requires the horizontal scan rate to be faster, and it does sound as though the horizontal drive amplifier is shutting down because it cannot handle it.
So I would blame the monitor and not the video card.

You have been very lucky
Although you might get away with not being compromised or infected without an antivirus, by being very careful and not clicking on links or downloading anything, there is still a severe risk of drive-by infection due to exploits in common software like Java or flash or even within the browser
An Antivirus is very useful for that protection, because the major AV tend to update detections to protect against these exploits much quicker than Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Java etc issue a patch to protect you
No Security expert or Professional will EVER recommend NOT using an Antivirus. Any respectable expert or professional will warn that an Antivirus is not a guaranteed protection but it is one layer of a sensible protection strategy, along with the most important one " YOU" , common sense and awareness
Recently I bought an HBO TV series on DVD. The discs would play normally on my standard DVD drive but would not play on a Blu-ray drive, reporting the disc to be unreadable. The disc ran normally on two othe standard DVD drives.
The DVD originator (HBO) and Blu-ray people could offer no incite to the problem, other than to return the series for replacement discs. I did so, but the replacement disc did not work in the Blu-ray either.
Because I have discovered many mysteries associated with DVD and Blu-ray technology, I tried an experiment. I copied the original DVD disc and tried the copy on the Blu-ray drive. The copy played without problems!
Has anyone else had a related experience with Blu-ray?
After thinking about this odd behavior for a few days, an idea occurred to me. Could the encryption on the original be clobbering the Blu-rar read process? The copy process decrypts the data before the copy is created thus eliminating the problem.
Does this make sense?
i've recently run ewido, cleaner 40, and hjt. Once it was all said and done i can only see "windows classic" buttons and what not. I no longer have the option of blue, sliver, etc. Am i looking in the wrong place, or is it something else?

Try right-click Start button and select Properties. You should see a Taskbar and Start Menu tabs. On the Start Menu tab, select Start Menu, then Ok.
Windows 7 is supposed to overtake Windows XP (again) by the end of August. Assuming this is true, you do realize what will happen? Windows 8 Upgrade will come out next month, most of the upgrades will be from Windows 7, and XP will once again be the world's dominant operating system.
Why do you think that?http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/8030-statistical-oddity.html
Interesting infection if you get the bootkit bundle. Long and short of it, removed everything and cleaned up the MBR. No traces of anything. However, two system files reappear (%allusersprofile%\appdata) after every restart. At this point I suspect these are just files generated from an orphaned downloader. Analyzed all outgoing traffic, all normal.
Anyone else run into this?
Also, heads up for my IT friends. This particular bootkit variant was rough. Typical fixboot and fixmbr did not resolve. TDSSKiller would not run. Found an application that did remove the MBR infection, verified clean with MBRCheck. Not going to mention which as I know the occasional script kiddie glances around here looking for applications to add to their blacklists.
Nice to meet everyone. If I can ever be of any assistance please feel free to send me a message.
Hello and welcome. As you mentioned this is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads. To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/430903/system-fix-oddity/
I recently noticed that there are three instances of bootmgr on one of my secondary HDDs - not on the system drive. They're labeled bootmgr, bootmgr~3, and bootmgr~4. My questions are: Is it normal to have multiple instances of the bootmgr file? Are they supposed to be on a secondary drive, and not the system drive? Can these be deleted, or should I just leave well enough alone?
Thanks in advance!
I'd leave well enough alone. The potential costs are very high and the benefits are very low. If you can't restrain yourself, you should definitely have a system backup. If fact having a full system backup is something everyone should do anyway.
I use standard "Mail" and print via wifi - normally with no problems. (Epson WF - 2510)I have one particular email which will not print from my laptop. There is no error message on the laptop or the printer. All other emails print ok
That same email can be printed from my Android phone as usual with wifi
Installed Office 2K on a Dell c600 laptop w/ 128 MB RAM, 10 GB HD, 750 PIII. Ran fine for weeks. Now when I click on any document (excel, access, word) It always open the doc in Word. Ex. when I get an excel spreadsheet via Outlook, I click on the icon and it gets opened to word. But when I open excel or any other office app, I can open the doc fine inside the app itself. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, tried the office repair option as well. Is there a registry setting that got skewed? Any suggestions would be great. Thank you.
You have a couple of options here.
Do a search right here at TSG for "file associations" and fix the file associations to Excel and other files that are opening with the wrong application.
Uninstall again. Search for and download Eraser 2000 from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/searchkb.asp (or it may be somewhere on your installation disks). Use Eraser and then reinstall.
Eraser is required for proper fixing of the Windows registry.
Got a very strange problem with one of my users in Outlook 2007.
For some reason, her emails are sitting in her outbox until she manually does a send/receive. I've gone through all the normal settings and can't find anything obvious. It must be something in her user profile because if she moves onto a different machine, the same happens.
While at her office the other day, I removed her Outlook profile and recreated it. Emails then started sending quite happily. Once her mailbox had updated with our server, the problem reappeared. I've just been on the phone to her and she has recreated this and the same has happened.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing this? Getting frustrating.
downloaded combofix today on my new 8.1(x64) hp envy laptop, and when i went to install it, i received a strange popup to the effect of "your version of windows--2000--is no longer supported. huh?? tried the mirrors as well--same thing. is this only my problem, or anyone else hear of it?? any feedback is appreciated!!
Underneath the screenshot image on the download page it states."This program works with Windows 8, but not Windows 8.1 at this time!"There is no timeline at this time for knowing if and when it will work with 8.1.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/579850/combofix-oddity/
I have a weird situation going on. All my computers except this one, and there are 4 total, show an IP address 24.*.***.** whether checking whatismyip thru I.E. Explorer or AOL.
This computer shows 24.*.***.** when checking thru explorer, but when I check thru AOL it shows an
IP of 207.***.***.*** which is in Kansas somewhere & I'm in Colorado. I am getting booted off at least one forum when trying to login from this IP, even tho they have permissioned the above IP.
I have run all kinds of spyware/virus scans, deleted cookies, rebooted modems & routers & this computer, checked addons etc, etc.....but this weird IP thing is causing problems. I wasn't allowed to download an AVG virus update, so I had to download the file on a networked computer to install it.
AOL support doesn't exist because I am using a free account, but I'm convinced its something AOL is doing. Anyone else see this?
first off what are you doing still using AOL?
second it's most likely AOL I would extremely advise upgrading to dsl or cable
Hello, from time to time, a blank window will "pop up" but there will never be the window itself, only minimized in the taskbar for about 2 seconds, and then will vanish. Never enough time for me to try and find out what it is. It will show up with one of those blank .exe icons. This is all i know. if anyone could shed some light on this, i'd be extremely grateful.
Thanks a lot!
On my gateway desktop my mail icon has a 1 in it.
even though I have cleaned out all the folders
for all (Aol, att, gmail and yahoo) the 1 remains.
it does change when I receive some mail (it was at 8 this morning)
After I cleaned it the 1 is back.
I also checked out the web mail sites to make sure nothing was in them.
I booted up my laptops and its there too.
Any thoughts on this ??
Hi there. You may want to try the app troubleshooter and possibly other items here:
Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8
Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the app which I know is a PITA since you have multiple accounts.
I recently had my Dell XP SP serviced due Startup Oddity to all sorts of crazy problems going on with it Turns out a stick of RAM was Startup Oddity bad and was replaced Everything works fine now except for this one weird thing Whenever I boot up my machine I get a screen that says SELECT OPERATING SYSTEM TO START WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION WINDOWS XP SETUP The only reason this is annoying is because the default selection is 'setup' and it has a second counter before it automatically selects the highlighted option Meaning I have to make sure to watch the thing every time it boots and make the proper selection When it does go into Setup mode it inspects the hardware configuration and then gives an error saying quot NO CDROM DRIVE FOUND quot which is bizarre because both of my CD drives are installed and work fine It then automatically restarts and goes back to the selection screen Minor problem yes but still a problem There's obviously not a Windows disk in my drive causing this to happen Windows XP is installed Startup Oddity and working fine why would it constantly be asking me if I want to install Any help suggestions Thanks
This is easily solved:
Got to start; Run and type msconfig
Once the new window appears tab along to boot.ini.
Look for the XP HOME EDITION entry in the box and single click it. Look at the buttons below the box. See where it says set as default Click it and apply the changes. It will ask you to restart, so click restart and check the above procedure works.
I have no clue as to the connection, if any.....
On the machine that I tried to fix the Windows Defender on, I now have this odd anomaly.
Point to the lover left corner of the screen--task bar rises and you are pointing at a window.
Left click on the window and the fourth item from the bottom is (as expected) "File Explorer".
Right click, instead, and the fourth item is "3 - Windows Explorer".
The lap-top nearby says "File Explorer" in both places.
I pre-ordered 7 professional upgrade from Newegg and installed it on a dual boot with XP Pro. Everything went smoothly and all was well. Periodically the "windows is not activated" appears on the lower right hand corner of the desktop. When I right click my computer and choose properties it initially says windows is not activated and all by itself switches to windows is activated and the "windows is not activated" message disappears from the desktop. This happens periodically and then goes away by itself. Today I returned home to see a new prompt saying that I might be a victim of counterfeit software and a link to go activate windows. Once again I right click my computer and everything is resolved. Anyone have an idea what causing this?
If you did not say that you bought your DVD from a reputable firm, I would suggest that it is indeed a counterfeit copy. If you did not notice any problems with the packaging, torn wrapping, key code that did not look right etc., we should, for now, assume that you are legit. If that is the case for whatever reason your machine is malfunctioning and indicating that you do indeed have a counterfeit copy. I am not really familiar with a situation like this, but I would assume after the 30 day period has expired, the MS computers will pick up on the notice. Then the fun begins. They will periodically shut you down, not send updates etc. You do not want to get to that point. Take your time, but if you cannot ascertain a valid reason for this problem, I think it wise to call MS, explain the problem to them and hope for the best. Worst case scenario, they will confirm that your number is not legit, and yes, you have to buy another. A more likely scenario, is that they will confirm that you are legit, make note of that fact and set their computers to disregard the bogus reports that they get from you, they may even give you another number which will work correctly.
Regarding the call to MS, I would call the number, used when you cannot activate from your computer. This alone may clear up your problem. If not you will speak to someone and you should follow the guidelines that I provided. Anyway good luck. Its a shame, after spending good money, you must get aggrevated.
My XP Pro recycle bin, automatically deletes everything.
Yes, I checked the properties to ensure that the box for one-step deletion was unchecked, so it should act properly as an interim storage dump until called upon to completely delete.
I have developed a work-around, though it is a little cumbersome: I can drag-and-drop directly to the bin from a list window and it will save the file or folder. Otherwise, it's gone.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Alternately, it tells me that my 50GB of data is 232GB large and cannot fit on the external drive I am copying to. LOL.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/28057-copying-oddity.html

My Acer Travelmate 2420 used to connect to my home wireless LAN ok. It now only connects when on battery, but cannot detect the network when on mains power. If I connect on battery, it fails as soon as I plug in the power supply, and recoconnects when I unplug! Anyone got any ideas on a probable cause?
The power supply is too close to the wireless adapter (I did this to myself once!)? Or directly in the path between router and adapter's antenna?
I'm hoping someone can help me with this unusual situation We currently have a workgroup network that ties all Windows XP computers together via a switch Each computer has been assigned a static IP address in order to accommodate network printers and network programs that require TCP IP communications We're using a subnet of as well as a quot made-up gateway oddity Networking and DNS quot of these currently Networking oddity don't point to anything This network has functioned well for several years Now we're introducing a DSL modem wireless router combination which also defaults to the subnet However it is not possible for us to physically connect the DSL modem router to the switch because they are in entirely different locations that is beyond our control This is not a serious problem however because our intent is only to allow one person at any one time access to the Internet via a single USB wireless adapter The wireless adapter is assigned an IP address automatically from the modem router in the range the router automatically assigns a Gateway and DNS of to the wireless adapter Here's the problem So far we can only get Internet access if we enable the wireless adapter and disable the built-in wired adapter If we try to enable both adapters the Internet connection will no longer work and when we try to ping we get request timed out As soon as we disable the wired adapter again we can once again ping the router and get on the Internet I presume what's happening is that when both adapters are enabled the Internet is trying to use the wired adapter instead of the wireless adapter to talk to the router I've tried going into Network Properties Advanced and ensuring that the binding order has the wireless adapter come first with the wired adapter second However this isn't helping I've also tried changing the manually assigned Gateway and DNS on the wired adapter to some other address like to no avail Can anyone verify for me what exactly the problem is and let me know if there might be an easy solution at hand Unfortunately physically connecting the router to the switch is not viable Thanks a lot in advance Larry
Change the LAN IP of your router to 192.168.2.1 ... This way, the wireless network will be separate from the wired ... no conflicts ....http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/networking-oddity-107880.html

I was wondering if anyone else experienced this glitch and whether it was a symptom of something more ominous.
Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot - #260 on the right.Right click on it and save the .vbs file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to run the script. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/273928/oddity-on-start-up/
Since my computer came back from the repair man, having been re-installed and with a new graphics card, a DOS screen appears very briefly.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening now? Please!
I would say that is a program that you are running
I would disable all start up programs apart from the Microsoft ones.
In the search bar type "msconfig"
Then go to the startup tab and disable them all and enable one by one
For the last 8 months or so my computer clock has been running about 7 minutes ahead of "real" time. I didn't want to re-set it because then I'd've had to re-install AVG because it doesn't like it when you change the time.
Today - all of a sudden it's back to normal. And AVG ran normally.
This is so weird!
An Internet time server probably updated your clock automatically. Double click on the clock in the tray and look under the Internet time tab in Date and Time properties to see if its checked there. Since it didn't update in several months, some other program may have invoked a time correction.
I've never seen the AVG updater get upset over a few minutes or even a few days for that matter and when it does, I just set the time back to somewhere near present day and everything is fine again. You should never have to re-install for that reason.
I was trying to remove an old version of a program when i noticed this in the Add/Remove programs panel:
the Remove/Uninstall buttons are not available for about 80% of the applications!! Not sure what has happened as I haven't done anything radical and pc is working normally. Have scanned with AVG, Superantispyware and did my HiJackThis scan, with no strange results.
any idea what might be wrong

I have my Windows Update set to notify me when updates are available This setting causes a yellow shield to appear whenever a new update is released This evening I saw the notification so I went to the update site and clicked the quot Custom quot button There was update the Visual C and updates to Office I do not use either program so I unchecked them and clicked the box Update Windows Oddity to hide the updates on all items An additional reason I did not download them is I m on dialup and the total size was MB that would take way to long to download for little advantage Anyway after I set all the updates to be hidden I logged off rebooted and dialed up the internet again The shield showed up again i went back to the update site and now the C update was not shown but all of the Office were still shown So I went through the process again rebooted and the shield still showed up Back to windows update Now there were of the Office Windows Update Oddity updates Did the whole routine again This time there were Did it again This time there were Did it again with left Did it again and they were finally all gone In each case I unchecked ALL updates and it would hide them in groups and finally one at a time Is that weird or what I ve hidden a lot of Windows Update Oddity updates over the years and never seen anything like this The only thing different about my computer configuration that is new is I installed Microsoft Security Essentials yesterday evening I have no reason to believe Windows Update Oddity that to be a factor beyond it s the ONLY difference of note Any opinions Raybro nbsp
I use the same method you do for choosing my windows updates- (as I believe Microsoft's picker is broke when it comes to choosing what my system needs) - and I will say this is an excellent procedure - and many should follow your method for updating.
That said - that is wild - why would that happen?
They feel very striongly that you should have these- and actually now that you have Microsoft Security Essentials shouldn't that keep this from happening - not cause it?
I have a few ASUS manual and one MSI manual from two years ago to my newest build, which uses the ASUS PQ5.
In the older manuals, the sequence on the main page that shows the IDE and SATA connections goes like this: Floppy Drive, IDE, SATA.
In the newest manual, the PQ5, the sequence goes: Floppy Drive, SATA.
IDE is no longer there.
When I went into the BIOS, I was looking for the IDE connections on the main page and they were not there, but they were in the Boot Order.
Has anyone else noticed this in the more recent BIOS settings?
Just set the SATA controller to IDE

Hi All I ve bought my wife a new laptop to replace her aging desktop and set it up for here this morning everything was going fine very straight forward connection to wireless router giving internet connectivity no pronlems When I then tried to connect my laptop to the printer connected and shared on her laptop I hit problems and could not find her laptop on the network even though we are on the same workgroup After hours of fiddling with firewalls and config I tried connecting my laptop to one of the wired router wireless oddity ports on the router and now everything wireless router oddity is working fine Is it normal to have to have at least one connected via ethernet This is what I had before with her wireless router oddity desktop so didn t hit any problems until this morning is there are fundamental difference between wired and wireless connections This is a real pain as I ve not got a bloody ugly cable sticking out of the side of my nearly new shiny laptop Thanks Simon nbsp
In some rare cases, I noticed that you cannot paste something that you have copied - e.g. a product key into the product key field during installation. In lieu of Paste, use CTL+V. That has always worked.
This seems to be some odd behaviour of the Clipboard for which I have no explanation.
I blame the way the application accesses the keyboard or the operating environment it runs under - not the clipboard.
Notepad running under native Windows allows me to click within its Window and copy the clipboard to it via either Ctrl+V or Right Click context menu and PASTE
When I launch a CMD.EXE shell I can ONLY copy via Right Click context menu and PASTE.
When I use Ctrl+V I actually get
There is no attempt to copy the clipboard contents to CMD.EXe via Ctrl+V

When saving an html file to replace an existing file of the same name, Vista responds with an error message to the effect that I cannot create the file.
I can work around the problem by saving my edited file with a new name and later deleting the old file and renaming the new name to the original name.
This problem does not occur on my Win XP machines. What is going on here?
On Vista Pre SP I tried to find something similar on Google but I couldn't find anything I have a Dell Inspiron AMD X with gigs of ram and SATA gig HD The DVD drive in device manager is listed as TSSTcorp H B SCSI CdRom Device plus all the R-R RW stuff in there Anyway when I burn data disks by opening the blank disk in my computer or explorer and dragging files over and then burn them with the mastered option It works about half the time oddity. Vista burning CD/DVD Sometimes the burn works fine Note that I'm using mastered version that finalizes the disk I haven't used the special Vista formatted Live UDF version or whatever it is called enough to know if that has problems Other times right before Vista starts to write to the disk while still in preparing mode the GUI for the burn status progress bar plus the My Computer window that is open behind it simply vanish and crash out with no error message The disk is still locked down I can't eject it because Vista says it is being used but the burn never completes I have to restart the computer to get the disk out and Vista CD/DVD burning oddity. when I get the disk out and look at the bottom I notice no data has been written The disk is still blank and still can be used fine in another burn However it does this with CDs and DVDs As long as I keep trying to burn the same files to disk it'll never write to the disk but if I delete shaded shortcut files from the burn window and copy them again then sometimes it'll burn but other times it'll start to crash out again I don't know if this is fixed in SP or not but I'm trying to back up so I can install SP in case SP hoses the computer However I use the program Vista CD/DVD burning oddity. CDBurnerXP to burn a data disk and it works flawlessly every time I downloaded it for a workaround but I don't know what's causing the original problemhttp://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/vista-cd-dvd-burning-oddity-278408.html
This may be nothing to worry about, but I'd like to make sure. On one of our Windows 2000 Advanced Server servers, the quick launch icon for Internet Explorer is a little off. When you mouse-over the icon, the info box displays:
Launch Internet Explorer Browser
When I checked the properties of the shortcut, the "@shmgrate.exe, -11002" whas in the comments section of the dialogue. I just want to make sure this isn't an indication of any greater problems.
from what i could find, it seems to be a windows NT data migration tool, nothing to worry about.
Your not seeing any errors or anything are you?
Hello I generate this thread with the hopes of receiving thoughts regarding an issue that has been notable on my pc for a few weeks now It consists of an unusual cpu overload right after I boot the computer and run a program after the computer has been left off during an extensive amount of time like for instance when I boot it up after waking up from sleep Due to the cpu performance capacity incrementing up to its maximum level I have to imminently reboot my computer But after I reboot however the anomaly does not occur I generated a thread regarding this issue on the support forums of spybot and after they provided me with some treatments none of them solved the issue but the forum support member that responded to me provided me with this website as an option to look for responses since after I notified him about the issues persistence he said that it was now an issue above his level of knowledge hence my request for responses which will be appreciated Thank You
If you press CTL+ALT+DEL at the same time you will see a box. Click on Process and you will see what is using the CPU cycles.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/persistence-of-performance-oddity-303915.html
Howdy allFirst time poster long time reader - hope you re all well I have a strange problem which has been driving me slowly nuts over the last hours We have a couple of network shares that seemed to be behaving strangely Examining the shares revealed three new files in the root of the share -desktope inidesktopw inithumbs db All three were marked as read only system hidden files Then throughout the drive all Excel and Word files were being doc Office oddity replacment hidden and replaced with a shortcut a lnk file using the Office doc replacment oddity same name as the now-hidden file The lnk file would Office doc replacment oddity load CMD exe start the thumbs db file then run the relevant correct program word or Excel and the file - a typical shortcut would look like this -C WINDOWS system cmd exe C start thumbs db amp amp start winword exe quot J claim form detail doc quot I ve scanned all three files above using virustotal com and they come back clean - thankfully at the end of the report it provides a guess Office doc replacment oddity on what it thinks the files are so it turns out the ini files are actually Excel and Word icon files used to mask the shortcut with the correct Office logo and the thumbs db file is an executable I ve tried decompiling the thumbs db file using IDA Pro Free V but I m by no means a coder so can t see what else this file may be doing the only form of proagation we can therefore see is when someone tries to run a spreadsheet or document they are kicking off the process to scan all Excel and Word files AFAIK this process doesn t seem to affect local documents only on network shares I ve not attached any files but the report for the thumbs db file from Virustotal can be found here Link to virustotal com scan report for thumbs db Needless to say I ve tried a lot of Googling to get to the bottom of this but can t find anything beyond the usual quot If a piece of malware hides all your files run attrib to reset quot So do I have anything to worry about or should I just keep squashing this process until it stops it does seem to be slowing down today Your thoughts further queries and pearls of wisdoms will be greatly received Thanks in advanceMat Moore
I'm a unix administrator and we are also experiencing this infection on a lot of our shared drives for the last day or so. We are still unsure of how the virus infects a users personal machine or propagates, I can see that once an infected user tries to open a word or excel doc on a shared drive it creates the three files mentioned in that particular directory and then scans the shared drive hidding all word/excel docs and creating .lnk files as already explained.
Symantec is now able to detect the thumb.db2 file as a trojan virus but we have found 4 different sized versions of this file and are having them all checked out.
Currently we are writing scripts to unhide the original word/excel files and remove the shortcut links. We can tell by the owner of 'thumbs.db2' which members of staff have caused the infection of the shared drive but we are unaware where the virus is located on the infected Pc and how it gets there.
I agree with Mat that at the moment there is very little on the net to go on at the moment.
Hello again to you Gurus.
Running Vista Home Basic.
Using Windows Mail I sent four photos as a file attachment. They were received ok but there were also 10 thumbnails attached which have not come from my computer. I ran Malwarebyes, CCCleaner, Adaware, and AVG and found nothing. Yje other machine also ran detect programmes but nothing was found on that one either.
I do not know if this is related but when I was chatting on MSN the picture I was showing was that of a dog but at the other end it was an entriely different but one that was on my computer.
Any suggestions or ideas appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
