USB WiFi speed half that of wired

Q: USB WiFi speed half that of wired

I am a complete noob re WiFi (alway use hard wired) but recently bought a cheap USB dongle described as 150Mbps 11n. On testing I found I was getting about 22Mbps download with the dongle (1 metre from router) compared to 62Mbps wired. Upload speed was about the same as wired.

A bit of Googling told me this was a simplex/duplex problem. I did a test with a friends laptop and got full speed, so its not my router (BT homehub) and I have the latest driver from Windows update. So - is this about par for a four quid WiFi dongle, or do I need to set some value or other to get duplex? I could see this half speed business being a problem for someone already on a low speed line.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Wired PC getting half the downstream speed as wireless laptop

I can't say why those machines are showing different wireless speeds as there are many factors involved, however there is something worth mentioning about the 54Mbps you are seeing now which is far from the full wireless N potential of 300Mbps.

In order to get true 802.11n speeds you need to go into your routers wireless settings and choose the 802.11n "Only" setting along with using WPA2 security and AES encryption which are both meant to work with wireless N. You won't be able to use the wireless N Only setting if you have wireless G or below clients that need to connect.

A:WiFi only half speed. Help.

Welcome to TSG!

Sorry to say that's all you'll get with 802.11 g. The 54Mbits/sec is the maximum physical layer bit rate. Actual throughput will be around 24 Mbits/sec Max.

Only way to "fix" it is to upgrade to 802.11 n.

I have an 802.11 n setup which connects at 130 Mbits/sec, but the Max throughput is around 60-65 Mbits/sec.

i have Lenovo thinkpad e531 x64 win 8

I just got new speed internet and when I connect my computer using ethernet it's signifiantly slower than wireless on the same laptop.

On my other laptop the wired produces very fast results (faster than wifi) so the problem is my laptopr's ethernet connection.

what can i do?

My ISP provider came with his working laptop, pluging in my ethernet cable in his laptop and the internet speed it was 300mb/s.
and on my laptop is 17 mb/s....

So just this past weekend I re-installed Windows 8.1 on my dad's ASUS Notebook (K55N), but now its WiFi internet speed is a good ~25% slower vs wired directly to the router (Linksys E4200), that was definitely not the case prior to the fresh install. I did run Windows Update just after the install just to make sure it downloaded the latest driver for the WiFi Network Adapter (it did download one).

Power Plan is set to High Performance.

I really have no idea what's going on, my dad has another laptop, and there, its internet speed is exactly the same Wireless vs Wired.

I really need your help here, thanks.

lets see an ipconfig /all

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

depends on what models your looking at. If they are both 10/100 then you should get the same wired performance from both animals.

Hi there

This USB Wifi adapter seems to be a MEGA performer --Lovely finally to be able to THINK of getting rid of LAN cables all over the place.

I've no probs with decent HD Movie streaming from a SERVER with one of these (I unplugged the LAN and inserted the USB Wifi adapter into a USB3 slot --note this needs genuine USB3 to work at proper speed). My Home router can deliver 802.11ac so no probs there.

Brilliant piece of kit and NO MORE CABLES !!!!!!. Wifi will soon be able to deliver comparable speeds to LAN especially for HOME networks. !!!

Here's the UK Link but is available in US and Europe. In any case it's delivered (in my case) by Amazon S.A.R.L (Luxembourg) so no tax !!!. even though I ordered from UK web site --they will ship outside UK tax free.

using CPU-Z program, i checked 'memory' and it shows dual channel, symmetric, and ' dram frequency 332.5 mhz dual channel'

not the 667 mhz i was expecting ?

Detailed specifications - ThinkPad T61, T61p
maybe this is normal? or do i maybe have bad ram or a bad setting somewhere?

A:ram speed looks like half what it should be

You have to divide the speed (667 MT/s) by 2, as it is dual channel. You get ~333 MHz.

A:I get half internet speed on my new PC

Your internet speed is determined by your broadband provider and 40Mb would be typical of a system where you have fibre to the cabinet near your home and then copper wires from the cabinet to your house. So this sounds correct unless you are expecting a much faster download speed such as you can get with fibre to the house.

The internal speeds of the wireless connections within your home are typically much higher as you have observed but at the end of the day the bottleneck is always the speed from your provider.

Hi. I pay for a 3.0 mb/s att dsl connection. For some time now, pages seem to load slower than they did initially. After going to, my download speed was stated at 1.14 mb/s. This is not even close to the 3.0 I'm paying for! What might be causing this. Could the company purposely be giving me less speed thinking I won't notice? A:CPU powers up at half speed (or less)

Go to the power configurations and make sure the CPU power is set to 100% maximum for both AC and battery.

You should also download a temperature monitoring program on both and see how temps are running. If the slow one is running hotter, you could have a problem with poor heat transfer from the CPU/GPU ti the heat sink because of an incorrectly attached heat pipe or heat transfer medium.

Check whether the SpeedStep option in the BIOS menu is enabled. If it's disabled it may cause the system running at half speed, whilst CPU is not idle.

Then the bottleneck would have to do with the Wi-Fi card built in to the computer. What you can do is try updating the driver for it from the manufacturer, but other than that, the hardware you purchased (inside the computer) is what is slowing you down.

Whaen you 1st boot up, hit Del a few times and you'll enter the BIOS.

Hopefully, on the far right tab, there will be an option to "Load Optimised Defaults". Do that, reboot and see what it's reported as now.

A free utility such as LookInMyPC will create a report. This can be limited to Services. The report is a table with the service names, status, and start type. It's easier to compare hard copy and cross off the ones running in safe mode from the standard mode list.

Note if you can't print from safe mode just wait until booted into standard mode to print out the table. Save to desktop or whatever.

A:AMD processor running at half speed. why?

Try opening up some program like Internet Explorer or something that will stress your CPU. See whether the speed goes back to normal.

Some processors automatically throttle back when idling to reduce power consumption. When you stress them by opening a program or doing something like that, their speed goes back to normal. See if that works.

This 750 MHz figure is the same in the BIOS setup screen and in Windows XP My Computer Properties screen. I have not changed any components other than the hard drive, and the processor is the original Athlon 1.3 GHz. What would account for the decrease in speed and what can I do about it?

Hi Fiorello! Welcome to SevenForums! μTorrent or any bittorrent client WILL NEVER reach the maximum speed of your connection. And HTTP servers probably won't either. Your lucky if you're getting half of your connection because most people only get a sixth of it (1MBPS on Bittorrent is AMAZING)!

So this isn't anything to do with your connection, however your ISP may be throttling BitTorrent so...

Open μTorrent and press CTRL and then P
Go to BitTorrent at the side
Under Protocol Encryption select "Forced" or "Enabled"
(This encrypts outgoing BitTorrent Traffic so your ISP can't tell that it's BitTorrent)
Tick "Allow incoming Legacy Connections"
Press "OK"

That's pretty much it.

hey there. i'm running half life 1 (you know, the 1998 game) on my laptop and for some reason, it runs way too fast. i run around the maps at high speed, sound clips stutter, monsters are too quick, etc. i've had this problem before with tactical ops, however that was a relatively easy fix (i just typed cpuspeed=1800 into the console). im pretty sure its a problem with my cpu being too fast for the game and the game not being able to time itself properly. however, the tac ops fix i mentioned above doesn't work for half life. any one got any ideas?

i wouldnt say its your cpu been too fast, mines a 3700 (2.2ghz) and it runs fine.
you can never have too much power, only too little power.

see if theres any updates or patches.

When plugged in via ethernet I can get about 35 megabit but when going wireless, I'll be lucky if I hit 14 megabit. I have a linksys e2500 router with the latest firmware. I have tried 2 different wireless cards one usb (TP-link n150) and a PCI-e (asus pce-n15), both with the latest drivers available. With the Asus my connection is a steady 5 bars, at 144.5 Mbps. I am in an apartment complex so there are a lot of other signals around me but I have tried to select the best channel I can with the least amount of overlap I can. Anyone have any ideas about some hidden router settings that might throttle speeds? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My installation of Firefox was running fine, then slowed down my internet connection to less than 1mbps. I have done clean install several times and installed an older version 3.6, then the newest version. I made a point of saving my profile folder (renamed so it didn't cause a conflict), but cleaning out all other files. The new install tests about 3+mbps and when I re-test a second time (within minutes) It is down to 1mbps. This happens over and over.
IE is installed and it consistently runs at 3+mbps. Can anyone suggest a solution?

I recently upgraded to windows 2000 from 98 and my computer began running at half the speed. Next I restored 98 using a restore CD and installed 2000 side by side with 98 so I now have 2 operating systems running. In 98 mode, my computer runs at normal speed, 400 mhz. In 2000 mode, it runs at half speed because my front side bus is running at half speed. In 2000 mode, it says my FSB is only 49 mhz while in 98 it reports to be 100 mhz which is the actual speed. Any clues? IBM aptiva 400 mhz, 64 MB RAM, putting in more RAM does not help.

Hello guys,

If I measure my internet connection speed I get a download speed of around 2.5Mb/s and an upload of around 750kB/s.
However, if I actually download a file, it only downloads at around 20kB/s which is painfully slow especially on a large file.
I have tried both a wireless and wired connection and it doesn't make any difference.
Is there any way I can get the full potential out of my internet speed.

Thanks in advance

A:Wired/Wireless download speed

First, your actual download speed "in the real world" will differ significantly from a test/sample measurement. Secondly are you using a download manager? What browser are you using to do this downloading on? Also, the site(s) you download from have a direct impact on speed due to servers used. Need a little more info to make any recommendations.

hello everyone!

I just want to make sure these numbers are ok and something isn't wrong or anything. I have a Versalink 327w router/modem (wireless g i think) and 3mb/s internet.

My speed when wired to router through ethernet: ~3mb/s

My speed when wireless right next to router: ~1mb/s

Is it normal for the difference to be so great?

Relevancy 53.32%

I'm actually not sure if that's normal but I do know wireless G real world speeds are roughly 20-25 MB/s and I always get 9 - 10 MB/s transfer speed on my 100 mbit ethernet network, so I imagine I should AT LEAST be getting close to 9 MB/s speeds when transferring to & from my Wireless-G laptop and my 100 mbit ethernet desktop (and of course 802.11g router) NOT 2.3 MB/s.

is 2.3 MB/s normal for transferring between a 802.11g and 100 mbit device?

I have a peculiar issue with wifi on Windows 10. My computer shows a wifi link speed of 270 Mbps and i have tested the same by sending huge files over my network. Now the issue is that i strongly believe that something in Windows 10 is throttling the internet speeds drastically. I am only getting half of the subscribed download speeds on my Windows 10. I have other devices/phones connected to the same wireless network and they are getting full speeds!

I have tried several things but i am unable to achieve full download speeds on my Windows 10. This has been affecting me for the past around 15 days. Prior to that things used to be normal.

Any clue guys? Because if nothing works then i may have to downgrade to Windows 7

When I plug the splitter into the modem, I can only successfully connect on the wireless network. If I plug splitter into the router, the opposite. The wired Mac Mini works fine, but the Airport Express flashes orange, and I can't connect using Wifi. Any thoughts on how to resolve this? Using 10.4.11 on the Mini, 10.3.9 on one of the laptops, and I think 10.6 on the other. Thanks in advance.

As you can see in the screen shot below (wireless on the left, wired on the right), when I run a network speed test, I am getting terrible wireless down speed. And pretty bad up speeds both ways. Other users on the same wireless are getting up speed numbers around 60 - 65, and about the same down speed as I am getting wired..

I have already tried reinstalling the wireless adapter driver, no change.

I am running a Dell Inspiron N7010, Windows 8.1. Device Manager identifies the wireless as "Broadcom 802.11n". Since other laptops and devices are getting better speeds on the wireless, the issue has to reside on my end. The driver that is installed is from Microsoft, dated 3/13/2012, and is version

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi all,
I am not sure what the problem HP dv7-7300 windows 8 and an  i7  and the wifi connects most of the time if I let it set for about 10 seconds after shutdown, then restart. The troubleshooting part of the wifi does not come up with anything.
If I select restart and it reboots right away I see a little star or something on my signal icon which I am thinking is limited connectivity, not sure. I have to connect manually even though it is set to auto. If it sits for 5-10 minutes it will eventually connect. Router seems fine, another machine always works fine using it.
I installed an SSD right away and the machine works flawlessly aside from this issue. I didn't notice this problem with the original HD but only used it for a few hours and didn't do any quick restarts.
Any ideas will be appreciated.

A:New dv7..wifi won't auto connect half the time

Did you reinstall Windows 8 on the new ssd or cloned the drives? If you reinstalled, its possible you missed a driver or are using an outdated one. In my experience, most of the connectivity issues in Windows 8 are due to drivers.

I have a simple home network running several machines with Windows 7.

My "server" is running W7 Pro x32. This machine is connected via wired internet directly to my wireless router. When I run a java speed-test web app, I am seeing speeds between 1 and 4 Mb/sec. (My connection is ~20Mb).

I have a W7 Pro x32 laptop connected via wireless. This laptop gets 17Mb/sec speeds.

When I connect the laptop via a wire to the router, it's still upwards of 15Mb/sec.

This was not always the case with this hardware.
I have tried shutting down any non-essential services.
I have tried running the speed test in Safe Mode +Networking.
I ran a live linux CD and got fast speeds.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

I have recently switched to Ethernet connection on my computer so to increase my internet speed. But when i do a speed test on any speed test site, it always repeatadly freezes during the test and the speed goes up and down constantly. I should be getting 30mb internet but due to this strange problem i get an average of 7-11mb.

you can see how unstable the internet is on wired connection.

I have turned my firewall off to try that and it made no difference. But i am think maybe Avast free 7 might be causing some problems.

I have also tried the same cable on a mac and a laptop and another pc and its fine so i am sure something on my PC is the problem :/

A:Massive difference between wired and wireless speed

if you connect your laptop by cable to the router - what speed do you get - want to make sure its just a wireless issue

also post an xirrus screen shot - see below

make and model of the laptop - update (infact actually install) drivers for the wireless - i can find from the make and model of the laptop
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.
Direct link to the program is here

{If the above link does not work heres another link,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

To post a screen shot of the active window.
Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
>Press the Esc. key.
>go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
>Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool
see here
To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I've been having trouble with my internet connection for the past few days. It seems to be a battle between my router and modem, but my question is about the sidebar on windows 8. When I click on the internet connection icon (?) in the lower right hand corner, the sidebar appears, showing the internet connectivity. My PC is wired to the router and modem, so should I need to connect to my router listed under the WiFi listing? Can I be wired and wireless at the same time? And if so, will it cause problems?

A:Internet Connection - WiFi & Wired?

If you are plugged in with a cable and connected wirelessly then Windows will default to the faster connection which is usually the wired one. As soon as you unplug the cable then the wireless connection will be the connection you are using. No problems with that at all.

This morning I booted up my tower I noticed wifi bars in my tray showing weak signal.  I clicked on it an disconnected the bars disappeared and cable hookup showed back up.  I have been on on wifi for many years and have never seen this happen, any idea why it would happen?

A:Wifi jumped to my wired tower!

Just went up and tried it again it was back on wifi, just for a test I hooked up one of the wifi antennas that came with the machine it doubled the bars.  Just for giggles I did a speed test then killed the wifi connection and did it again numbers were very close.  I did get 25 updates yesterday I am wondering is one of them had anything to do with this issue.

Hooked up a new router Wed night (Belkin). It worked fine. The wired computer had no issues and my laptop worked great down the hall. Thursday morning there were no problems either. Last night though neither computer would log on. The laptop would see the network then not connect. The wired computer wouldn't go online at all. When I unplugged the router, the wired computer was able to get online (even though it was still connected through the unplugged router, although I think my son had a USB hookup from the modem to the computer, so I think I understand that). Anyway, I tried resetting the router and modem, but no dice.

Any ideas? Why would it connect and work perfectly fine and then nothing? For either computer? What is the router doing to not allow the signal through even though nothing was changed?

It's probably pirated firmware on a clone of the D-Link card. Hardware is cheap, developing the firmware isn't.

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to networking so I'd really appreciate some help here I run a pool tour out of hotel venues and we're building a system to allow a laptop at each pool table running win XP to feed scores back to the laptop on the tournament desk running Win I've had no problems connecting these together and sharing folders using a Workgroup and an old Linksys wireless router The Win laptop is connected via ethernet cable and and Wifi wired router? hotspot the XP laptops are all connected to the linksys via wireless At this point nothing has an internet connection as the linksys router has no connection to an ISP and this is fine - so far so good The problem I have is that the Win laptop on the tournament desk not the XP Wifi hotspot and wired router? laptops at the pool tables also needs an internet connection So my idea for this is to connect to the hotels wireless hotspot whilst keeping the connection to the linksys via the ethernet cable I need to test all this before getting to Wifi hotspot and wired router? the hotel so to try and mimic the set up I've simply tried to connect to my own ISP's wireless router I use SKY Broadband in the UK I can connect to my wireless router but cannot get any internet pages maybe the linksys is telling my laptop I have no internet connection I read about bridging the connections so tried this I then got an internet connection but lost the connection to the other laptops via the linksys I rebooted and it switched the other way round - no internet but access to the linksys I'm not sure if what I'm doing is a valid thing to be able to do or even if my home wireless network will behave in the same way as the hotels wireless hotspot As I'm a novice when it comes to networking I'd really appreciate it if someone could offer some advice The attachedd PDF has a diagram showing what I'm trying to do

A:Wifi hotspot and wired router?

If you open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all you will get information on all the active ethernet adapters on the windows 7 laptop - wireless and wired. Only the IPv4 addresses need to be considered.

In all probability, your ISP's router will give you an IP address (as a DHCP server) in the range - - usually reserving for the router itself.

The linksys may also be giving out addresses by DHCP in the same range.

You need to set up the linksys to use addresses in a different range, for example - with the linksys itself as (the '35' can be anything between 1 and 255).

This way it will be unlikely that there will be any conflict between IP addresses that the linksys gives your XP and Win7 laptops network and the internet connection IP address. (but check with the hotel first what their IP range/ranges are, just in case!)

You will need to set up another work network (not homegroup - it would be best disabled since XP cannot use this type of network) for the wired connection on the Windows 7 laptop from the network and sharing centre - set up a new connection or network.

You will need to make all laptops members of the same workgroup - you could call this "Tournament" or some other relevant name other than the default "MSHOME" on XP or "WORKGROUP" on Windows 7.

Make a shared folder e.g. shared as "Pool" on each of the XP machines, and make sure that network file sharing is enabled on the XP machines.

You should not share anything on your windows 7 machine since it will be connected to a public network and the internet.

The linksys probably has a MAC address filter, which can be set to deny access to any PC except the laptops themselves. The MAC address also appears in the output of ipconfig /all ( it works the same in XP as in Windows 7) when run on each laptop.

Make sure that each of the \\XP-PC-name\Pool shares is visible by the windows 7 explorer and you should be ready to go.

Change network adapter speed from automatic top set at 1Gbps. Might also be a driver issue on the laptop, check for an updated driver.

Wireless well be much slower unless you are running on 802.11ac. I usually max out around 6MB/sec on 802.11n.

Hi all,

something I have not been able to figure out in Win7:

When I take my laptop to the living room it has access to my network via WiFi which works fine but a little slow. When I take it into my home-office I can connect the LAN cable and this makes things much quicker.

However, it seems to always conect via Wireless unless I disable that connection. Is there a way to make it go to the wired connection unless that is not available and only then switch to Wireless?

A:Easy switchting between wired and wifi network

Hi Dries, welcome to the forums

If you right-click the network icon on the notification area and select 'Network and Sharing center' then click 'Manage Wireless Networks' in the left panel. Next, right-click the wireless network and choose Properties

Try experimenting with those settings and see if it helps.

Is that the same as the AE2500 usb adapter seen at Linksys Official Support - Linksys AE2500 N600 Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Adapter ?

While not having seen the same error I've seen times on the second remote desktop I have here since the 7 Pro side of a dual boot with 10 Pro on separate drives has a rather interesting problem of it's own! There are no 10 drivers for the usb WiFi adapter and 7 won't connect by way of the Cat 5 ethernet cable plugged directly into the WiFi capable router!

On a few occasions 7 wouldn't even connect to the web where the IPConfig utility was then used to refresh the connection. With a command prompt option you can try the "ipconfig /release" command followed afterwards by the "ipconfig /renew" command to see if Windows will refresh the network detection after clearing the dns cache.

Another system tool available which might help would be running the System File Checker in case a system file associated with networking has been damaged or gone missing. If you have a 7 dvd used to install Windows you may want to see that in the optical drive since the tool may need to extract replacement files from the dvd. At the command prompt's dos like prompt you would type "sfc /scannow" and press enter to get that tool running.

Hello, I know the dangers of using public unsecured Wifi or wired connections, such as, those at hotels.
I am thinking about purchasing a VPN based public wifi protection firewall, such as, the one offered by Comodo, Comodo TrustConnect for vacation
TrustConnect Wi-Fi Internet Security Features:
Securely encrypts all data transmitted over both wired and wireless Internet connections
Creates a Virtual Private Network to hide all personal web-surfing information
Utilizes industry-standard 128-bit encryption
Is it going to be the equivalent of my home wifi that is secure with password?
Any other products you guys know of and trust for this purposes?

Generally this would be similar to using a proxy server when connected to another network. There are software based options available for proxy VPN services online that are relatively inexpensive (roughly $30.00 per year) and is as simple as opening a software and using a username and password to login.

Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl , and then click OK.

You can see the available connections in the LAN and High-Speed Internet section of the Network Connections window.
On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings, and then click the Adapters and Bindings tab.
In the Connections area, select the connection that you want to move higher in the list. Use the arrow buttons to move the connection.

A:Is it possible for me to get wired internet in a wifi shared building?

The fact that residents have access to the router at any time would be a big concern for me personally in terms of security especially if I was doing online poker. I take it the routers are small Linksys or smaller types of routers rather than enterprise grade? 16 apartments sharing the same wireless signal with potentially multiple devices in an apartment! That will simply kill any end user wireless router. Since you technically aren't authorised to change anything I cannot offer any support that would require configuration changes on the router end.

Do any other people suffer the same issue? Do you receive any disconnections on public WiFi? This can help determine if your machine is the issue or the supposedly throttled wireless network.

When obtaining a wired apartment, you will normally get an RJ45 hole in the wall with a cable to which you can then connect a single device or router for network connectivity. You will not need a modem at all. Your wired connection will pass through the building where your bandwidth will be controlled and then routed to the internet.

There are now many wifi only android devices that do not have mobile so Why 8.1 bridging wifi is difficult? wired to hotspoti wireless Yes almost everyone has a wireless modem at home for their broadband connection there are free or guest wifi connections in Why is 8.1 bridging wired to wifi hotspoti so difficult? many places But sometimes only wired connections are available such as at my office that I do not have a Why is 8.1 bridging wired to wifi hotspoti so difficult? wifi one that I want to use I do have wired internet connection and two wifi adapters At home my wifi only devices Google Nexus Why is 8.1 bridging wired to wifi hotspoti so difficult? easily connects to my wifi router I have a rooted S with a working native wifi hotspot to which my Nexus connects It seems easier to share a wifi internet connection with another wifi device but not so easy to share an ethernet connection by bridging to a wifi hotspot I do not understand why Win does not have a GUI for setting up hostednetwork Running command prompts is a PITA Does anyone know of a program that will easily bridge and share an ethernet connection to a wifi device and set up a hotspot for the wifi device

Ok, here is what I have:workstation with a wireless card
laptop with wireless card
wireless router

What I would ideally like to do is set up a wired network in which the computers can all share files and have the workstation connect to the internet via wifi and have the laptop create an adhoc wifi network.

Is this even possible?

Alternately, I would be satisfied If I could network the two machines via ethernet and have them both share a wifi connection.

If it is possible but I cannot accomplish this with what I have, what else do I need?

A:Need to set up small wired network, with wifi access

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Why not connect the workstation to the wireless access point (router) via the wireless card and then do the same for the laptop?

I ve got a regular desktop pc and a laptop Both are running Windows If both machines are wired file and printer sharing works like expected If the laptop is on the wireless things go sour The machines don t see each other I can t ping the laptop from the desktop or vice versa Strangely enough if I ping the desktop from the laptop by IP address the desktop will reply At that point the desktop will see the Solved: doesn't file wired-wired works, sharing wired-wireless laptop too and sharing file printer amp media works fine But if Solved: wired-wired file sharing works, wired-wireless doesn't the connection is idle for a couple of minutes Solved: wired-wired file sharing works, wired-wireless doesn't they won t see each other anymore I ve tried all kinds of things disabled IPv on both reconfigured file and printer sharing disabled the firewalls on both But none of these changes have had any effect whatsoever I have also tried to give everything the same name SSID workgroup and network name on the desktop but that had no effect either More info - Wired and wireless clients are on the same subnet - The router is a Linksys WRT- N - AP isolation is disabled - uPnP is enabled on the router Does anyone have any clue how to fix this nbsp
