Cannot access network computers

Q: Cannot access network computers

Windows Home Premium AT amp T DSL AT amp T McAfee Internet Security wireless network homegroup computers shared printer on desktop I just had to reinstall Windows and everything network computers access Cannot else due to an unfixable problem in Windows Now my other computers cannot access files or the printer on the desktop All show in the network and the home group All have internet access One of the other can access the other When I try to access the desktop through homegroups I get a message asking for the quot network password quot I don't know if that means the network or the homegroup but neither works If I try through the network it says it is quot not accessible quot Sometimes I Cannot access network computers get a message saying that quot a network printer has been discovered quot but it won't install I've tried everything with the firewall on and off I think I recall a similar problem a few years ago and it did involve the McAfee firewall As I recall the solution involved building the home group or the network with the firewall off then rebooting one or both computers before turning it back on Any guidance would be appreciated

Preferred Solution: Cannot access network computers

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

Can I just check that all the computers are set-up as a 'Home' network and HomeGroup connections within advance sharing settings are set to 'Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections'?

Hi everyone,

I'd appreciate any help on this matter. Since yesterday, I simply can't access any of the computers on my network. All 3 run on Windows 2000.

When I click on the "Computers Near Me" button, Windows Explorer simply hangs for several minutes.

Up until now I never had this problem, and have not had any changes in firewalls or anti-virus programs etc. With all programs closed I also have no luck.

Well, I have no idea anymore -- do any of you have an idea what I can try?

Thanks,
Riggie

Simple, uninstall Kaspersky. You need to check with Kaspersky for the correct settings.

A:Can't access to network computers

The most likely cause is a firewall that is loading on the computer.
Do you have any firewalls installed?

Hi. I have four computers on a network. 192.168.1.100, 101, 102, 103. 100 is W7. All four can connect to the Internet. The last three can see each other, but none of those can see 100. If I am on any of the last three, and go start > run > \\192.168.1.100, I get a message saying that the computer can not be accessed. It used to work, but no longer.

If I go to the W7 N&S Center, I see that it belongs to Network/Home Network. The second two computers are Vista; if I go to the N&S Center there, I see that it belongs to Network5/Private Network. I assume this is the problem?

In W7, I tried turning on Network Dicsovery, doesn't work. I tried leaving the homegroup to re-establish the computer on Network5, but I wasn't allowed to.

Any ideas on what I should do here?

Thanks in advance.

A:Can't access my W7 computers from others on the network

If you can't leave the Homegroup it can usually be fixed by following the link below.
Homegroup Not Working

You should be aware that Homegroups is not really made to work with other Op systems besides Windows 7 and 8. You will want to the Windows 7 machine to be on a Home network in order to set up the Homegroup.

It is possible to down level share with other Op systems with a Homegroup set up but the set up fairly complicated, the link below allows you to download a .doc file that shows you how to set it up.
Download Windows 7 & HomeGroup: Downlevel Sharing from Official Microsoft Download Center

Other problems can usually be fixed by following the Homegroup trouble shooter.

First I guess, did you create a restore point on both computers before starting all these other services. This might help.

Suddenly, on the same network with other Win7 computers, on which I followed the same procedure that always worked before and could view back and forth between the computers but this time the D drive only can not be accessed.
On either Asus laptop using Win 7 or with a newer one (with Win 10). In both cases all the folders within D drive that I share (and security settings) are visible and usable, but not the drive D itself on either computer. All sharing and security settings are identical with the folders that work across the network.
In the sharing center I have it share without passwords.
It keeps saying Can not access drive D.
I think I tried everything but maybe someone can suggest something.

I have three windows 10 PCs and one NAS on my network. One PC (Lenovo 220X) and the NAS are hardwired. The other two are wireless (Surface Pro 1 and Surface pro 4)

The surface pro 4 can see but not access either of the two other PCs. The other PCs can see and access each other and the surface pro 4. All the PCs can see and access the NAS.

What gives? The network settings are identical (as far as I can see) and the SMB is enabled on this machine as well. for some reason, the surface pro 4 cannot connect to any other machine but every other machine can see and access it.

Not sure what to do here. Thoughts?

A:How to set up home network to access everything on computers

Hello to a Buckeye Gal,

Chev65 is probably one of our most knowledgable members on networking.

I don't use "homegroups" because I have differenet versions of Windows running on my networks. (98, XP, Vista, Win7). I always use business type networks. You have to make sure you get the sharing right on each HD & folders that you want shared on the network.

Here is what I have:

DSL Modem connected via ethernet cable to Linksys 350N router
Laptop w/XP Pro wired
Laptop w/XP Pro wireless
Laptop w/Vista Home wireless
Trend Micro Internet Security on all machines
Windows Firewall turned off on all machines

All laptops have internet access but no access to shared files and folders on the other laptops. I get "MSHOME is not accessible . . ." I have tried with all AV and FW turned off and still no access. Ping attempts to IP addresses time out.

I run Synergy on two of these laptops to share a keyboard and mouse, which is still working. I have been reading and searching online, but nothing has helped.

Hello. I am trying to access other Vista computers on my network and I cannot access them. I do not have any of them password protected, yet when I click on them, it prompts me for a user and password. I try to use the computer name as the user but that does not work. For instance, my computer's name is 'Desktop' and I am trying to access my laptop which is conveniently named 'Laptop'. I type 'Laptop' into the user and leave the password blank, and after I press enter, it changes the user to 'Desktop/Laptop' and says 'Unable to Logon'

I do not understand why this is happening. I can access all the XP computers no problem, but no Vista computers. Any help would be great.

Thanks for any input.

Mitch

Everything I've read about this type of name resolution problem on VPN's was because of the client not having a proper DNS address.

You have to disable SMB 2 & 3 to get it to work. Also if you are running any kind of third party Internet Security software, it can cause the issue.

This is a similar problem to one I saw elsewhere on here.
I have three computers on my Home Network - mine, my wife's and a spare that we have. All are running XP Pro SP2 (fully updated).
My router is a NetComm 1300Plus4.
Until recently all was fine. However, now I can read both the other computers from my own, but get a message telling me that I may not have permission to access my own from either of the others - Access is denied!
Thus far, I have run the Wizard and created a Network Setup Disk and that hasn't worked. I have run the Wizard individually on each of the three machines and that hasn't worked. I have checked the Firewall settings on all three and they are the same.
Any ideas at all, because I am now totally at a loss!

You have to map the share from the other machine. This is a known SMB-CIFS with Windows 10, no time frame known when it will be fixed.

Step 3: Ensure that the options of File Sharing, and Public Folder Sharing are ON.
Step 4: Ensure that Password Protected Sharing is turned OFF.

Do this on all computers.

Hope this helps,

Hey, I have a home wireless network for two XP PC's and one XP laptop. One of the PC's and the laptop both have internet access through my comcast internet and linksys routers, but the other PC wont connect. Ive tried unplugging and re-plugging the routers, and re-booting. I can connect to the network (it says connected with very good signal) but I can't get on the internet.both of my other computers are on the same network but they can connect just fine. I dont know any computer language so please only use 'noob' terms. Thanks so much for the help, it is greatly appreciated!

A:On my wireless network, all my computers have internet access except for one.

Well, I've experienced something similar, but to fix it you'll have to do some things that aren't too hard...

Try going on to you're router's web based configuration page and change the IP (I'm guessing that the default is 192.168.0.1) to 192.168.0.2

That might not work, and knowing me, I wouldn't bet on it, so, maybe you should try changing channels on your router to avoid any interference. Try changing it to 11, that helped me in other areas I can remember.

Have you gone on the PC and checked the wireless on there? It says its connected you say, so in the task bar should be a little icon meaning Wireless is detected (And hopefully connected)

Try right clicking that, and going to Status, then Properties. There should be a new window that comes up, with a list of things with check boxes. Scroll there, and find something called "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Once there, make sure that "Obtain IP Address Automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically" are checked.

I don't know what else to tell you if that doesn't work, other than upgrading firmware of your router, which is fairly easy.

Best of luck.

Ok in nutshell.. 4 computers on same workgroup, all running windows 7. A neighbor is connected on network as well, but I do not want the neighbor to see any of the files on the other 4 computers without preventing them from internet access. In addition, the 4 computers are part of a business and require file and print sharing. I'm a little confused as well- I thought that being on a separate workgroup would prevent neighbor from seeing the files, but for whatever reason they are showing up in network. What are some solutions? Many Thanks!

A:Setting up access restrictions for computers on same network

Make it where you have to use a user name and password to get into the shared folders. if you dont know how to do this, go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\HomeGroup, click Advanced sharing settings and turn off Public Folder Sharing and turn on Password Protected Sharing. do this on all 4 of your computers that are part of the business.

I just discovered that within my "workgroup" setup I can access between the two computers in only one direction. Attached are print screen images to help you understand my problem. I can go in the other direction- Asus to VMware Player, "XP Home."

When I try, the error message in attachment 2 appears.

What do I need to do to overcome this difficulty?

At our office we have atleast 10 computers and they are all connected to a wireless Network using D-Link wireless adapters. All the computers are able to connect to the internet and browsing the net is not a problem, but the problem is in accessing some of the computers on the network, I keep getting thse pop up error messages saying " \\comp1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions". I am the Technical guy in the company overseeing tthe network. Please Help am stranded and my job is on the line.!

A:I can connect to the wireless network in my office but i cant access some computers:

Sounds like you don't have permissions. Is this a domain or a workgroup network? Sounds like a workgroup.
Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.
All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. You can open a command prompt as described above and type the following command: nbtstat -n. This will display the status of NetBIOS or indicate it's not configured.

HiHave a server linked to four computers and a laptop for a business and can't seem to access shared files on server from other computers as it keeps asking for username and password to access it. Also have tried suggestions in other forums such as simple sharing and creating an account on other pc's with same username and password as server. All of the systems are windows xp and the server is windows standard fe. Would really appreciate any helpThanksHarry

A:can't access shared files on server from network computers

Hello bighaz,

Are you running a Domain Controller(DC) for your domain? If not, go to 1, if you are go to 2.

1)
If you are not running a domain controller then the user credentials will not be present on every machine thus the error. If all users access the same files then you could create a single generic account on the file server and the users will need to use these credentials to access it. If the users need restricted access to certain files and folders you would need to create multiple accounts on the file server.
Once done ensure that all machines are in the same 'workgroup' default name is WORKGROUP and you should then be able to have access.

2)
If you are running a DC you will need to ensure that all machines are members of the domain and that they know of the IP address of the DC(this will either be set by DHCP if you are running a DHCP server or if all machines have static IP's this will need to be set on each machine. You will then need to add the user accounts to the ACL for the file share they require access to. Remember you may need to add the user to both the share permissions and NTFS permissions.

If the above is still not working can you please confirm that you can ping the file server and also see if you can access file shares on any of the other PC's.

As the topic says, I'm having an issue where a computer on a network cannot see the other computer on the network.  It is able to connect to the internet, and I double-checked based on earlier threads and the network discovery IS ON.  This computer
is able to create a Homegroup and the other computer on the network is able to see the shared folders when it joins the homegroup, but I cannot create a homegroup on the
other computer and have this computer see it to join it.  The other computer sees this computer in Windows Explorer under Network, but as far as the problem computer is concerned, it is the only computer on the network.
Despite this, when I open up the Network Map, it shows both computers, the router, and the modem.

HI,
Hoping someone can help my frustration with my home wireless.
I have a new laptop that cannot access my home wireless. There are 3 other computers that can access it so I know it's working. When I work away the new laptop can access other wireless connections. But as soon as I get home it's stuck on 'acquiring network address'.
The weird thing is my kindle does the same thing as does my friends iphones & ipads. They all connect wireless no problems elsewhere but cannot at my house.

I've tried switching off the other others computers connections & trying to connect.
Resetting the router

Please help getting very frustrated, not sure if it's my laptop or the router!??!?!

Thanks in advance guys!

A:Laptop cannot access home wireless, can access elsewhere & other computers are on it

What you describe can be caused by using the wrong network key. To check this go to the routers wireless settings, and in the Security Options, click Disable. If you are then able to connect it is down to the network key.

You might also want to try changing the channel and Mode in the router. Change the Mode to 'g only' and the channel to No 13. Work your way down from there until you get the best result.

Preface I am running a laptop which I upgraded from windows to windows I also have a desktop that is still running windows One of the hard drives on my desktop is shared and I often-enough will copy files from my laptop to my desktop The laptop connects wirelessly and the desktop is wired Today however I could not get my laptop to see my desktop on the network It is connected to in Other network showing; computers not shows old instead. network the network I am receiving internet just fine When I first click the network tab in the navigation pane it does not list any section for any computers Other computers in network not showing; shows old network instead. So I tell it to refresh and after a moment it now displays three computers all of which were ones I would see on the network from a house I no longer live in Now as it just so happens one of those computers is my desktop as I had it back then but when I try to access it it just gives me the spinning wheel for a while and then just says it can't access it If I click quot diagnose quot it doesn't find anything that's wrong This is pretty much the same result I get form trying to connect to one of the computers from my old house I haven't changed any settings and I was indeed able to connect to that computer at this house just a week or so ago Not sure what the problem is but I haven't tried much other than resetting the computer I'm open to suggestions

A:Connected to network, but no Internet access - can't access network properties

Appears you are on Vista ( Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] )

and running from an Admin Login (ie Owner and other than maintenance, you should be using a Limited Account, eg: UAC but solve that latter)

Disconnect from the router
Goto Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections.
Right click on ?Local Area Connection? & click ?properties? option.

scroll and find the Internet Protocol V6
clear the [x] preceeding that line
click ok

get a command prompt (run->cmd) and enternetsh int ip reset
netsh interface ip delete arpcache
ipconfig /flushdns

A:Windows XP Home "My Network Places" refusing to show network computers

You need to look at the dependency list for each service. In the case of Computer Browser, it's Workstation and Server.

Since Workstation is failing, that's probably the place to start.

Do you have WKSSVC.DLL in C:\Windows\system32? That's the workstation service, and it appears to be the missing module. I'd first try copying that from the installation disk, if it's missing, and then register it too by:

Start, Run, regsvr32 wkssvc.dll

If you can't find the DLL, you can run sfc /scannow to restore missing files.

A shortcut may be to download the file from DLL Dump and register it as described above.

OK there is a catch here you know how the printers after 20 min of no using them is going in stand by mode ... for some reason the network card is going in standby mode for the printer also if you try to print over the network you gonna see that the printer is going back visible.
Solution: There was a option in Network Monitor Devices for don't going on that "standby mode" check and see if this will help you.

A:Can see XP computers, can't access them

I'm having the same issue. It's a new computer with a fresh install of Win 7 Pro. I have changed the properties from 'computer on a business network' to 'home computer--not on network', but it doesn't stick. It just resets to 'computer on a business network'.

The computer properties tells me I'm not in a domain, just a workgroup, but when I try to login to another computer, it tells me I'm in the domain LAPTOP. (LAPTOP is the name of my computer.) Then, it doesn't allow me to change my domain so I cannot log into the other computer.

This seems like a Windows bug. It needs to be fixed ASAP. I need to be able to access other computers. I have never had/do not have this problem with other machines.

I've been told that a fresh install of Windows will fix this problem, but as this *is* a fresh install, I doubt it will work, and I don't want to spend hours backing up and reinstalling the same bug.

Can anyone recommend anything??

I have two Win 7 computers on my wired network and 6 Win XP computers on this same network. This main computer was Win 7 and just upgraded to Win 10 in November. For a year this network has worked just fine, plug and play basically when I set it up, now after Christmas shutdown (2 weeks), I can't see any of the computers on this network. The only thing I can see is the media drive on a computer called 6Head2. All I really do is transfer files from this main computer out to those 8 other computers.

What is wrong with my computer? Network discover, file sharing all checked, network location was changed from Public to Private today by me. But it did work last year, even with the network location being public.

Hi there

Has the server blocked the SMB ports (445 etc). I assume you CAN connect to network drives on the server.

I think a lot of people are getting away from using NETBIOS or things like that to resolve host names.

well last week I bought too network cards and I put them into the computers. both the computers detected them and so I installed them. and I can't get past that. so any can of help I would love it thanks little mac.

A:need help to network my computers

Go to Network properties and make sure TCP-> is bound to both network cards. Then double click on TCP/IP--> your network card and designate an IP address for each machine as follows:
1st machine - 192.168.0.1
2nd machine - 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

I assume you have a hub to connect both computers. This way you will have a TCP/IP network between both computers that can also share internet access. If you're going to use a gateway in order to connect the second computer to the internet, use the 192.168.0.1 address for that computer.

Hi there, I have had soo many problems with my network because the signal from my router could not reach to my computer with the external adapter installed. I Have tried linksys router with linksys adapter and still no go. I bought a new Belkin router which is a wireless pre-n router with 3 antennas instead of the two antennas that are on most routers. I am still using my kinksys adapters . The computer that I was having the problem with is 150 feet from the router in another building. My network is now working great, No dropped signal's and no problems on any computer. In the house where my main computer and router are setup I have a lot of electrical appliance's near by, Microwave/2.4 meg phone/Lights etc, and every thing works great.Check out the Belkin.

A:Network with three computers.

I have seen the opposite.. The Linksys connects where the belkin doesn't..

Different brand routers may show different performances due to the enviroment they are used in, the firmware of the router, the technology used, the sub channel of the wireless connection, and other various reasons.

Therefore, I see no reason to bad mouth linksys, or to set a preference here.. It's like a ATI vs Nvidia debate, it really depends on what works for you.

I'm glad you found something that works for you particular circumstances.

I'm clueless here...

Computer 1 is plugged into the modem via ethernet.

Computers 2 and 3 connect to a router via WiFi, which is then connected to the modem via ethernet.

How do I get all three computers on the same network so they can share files between each other?

Hi,

I'm sure this is a simple problem, but I have a direct line from the school network into my flat. If I plug in my laptop to the school network through an ethernet cable, I can see all the other network computers and shared drives under 'Network' in explorer. When I connect the network to my own wireless router so I can have wifi in the flat, I can't see any of them under Network. Is there a way to make them visible so I can access shared drives and folders when using the wifi connection?
I am using windows 7 professional, and my wireless router is a TP-Link WR840N.
Thanks in advance,

Robin

As the title states, I'm trying to start a homegroup. I start one up, and being that both of my computers have the same name, they don't see each other.

I've got that part figured out, I just need to rename the laptop!

Woo, that's all fine and dandy, except when I renamed my laptop from Ken-PC (the name shared by both laptop and desktop) to KenLaptop and rebooted, there was a whole slew of problems caused by the namechange. Very long story somewhat shortened, it looked like I was booting up win 95.

Multiple error screens, very retro GUI, all fixed by renaming my laptop Ken-PC again.

I'm just trying to be able to share my files between the two computers! HEEEELP!
I thank you for reading, and at the very least, being able to vent if nobody can help.

A:Network 2 computers

Also, when I click "see full network map" I get this...

I can drop down the bar at the top and select the direct connection between the two computers but then it tells me...

"Windows cannot create the network map because the network type is set to public. In order to view the network map, you must set the networks location type to Home or Work in Network and Sharing center."

Going back to the network and sharing center I cannot find anything clickable that will make these changes. This is on the laptop. When doing the same thing on the desktop I get the same map and when I drop the tab down and select the 'unidentified network' I get...

"Windows cannot create the network map. Responses from the other devices on the network are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network."

hope this helps.

A:Why all computers not on network?

Hi there,

Have you verified that Network Discovery is turned on?
Enable or disable network discovery

I'd check for a 3rd party firewall software installed if you have any. If you are using built-in Windows firewall make sure that Files/printer sharing is allowed.

It won't hurt to verify your current setup, please see this Tutorial.

If you had clicked on "public" rather than "home" when you were first connecting to the network you won't be able to see other devices.
What does is say it's set as?

Network Location - Set as Home, Work, or Public Network

If anyone can give me step by step instructions I would be very grateful.

A:Computers on network cannot see each other

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

A:can't see other computers in network

Which PC has created the homegroup? Once the home group is created, have the other PC joined that homegroup with the password created by the PC that created the homegroup? Have you checked the settings for each PC to make sure that each is set to "turn on network discovery". Is the "turn on password portected sharing" been enabled/disabled. I find it easier to have all PC's have that set to disable while in the homegroup. Basically, the homegroup is a small network with in your home network strictly for file sharing.

I have a problem I'm trying to help my sister's systems configured so that she can share a printer Here is her setup She has a Windows XP computer to which her printer is attached It is connected via cable to a Linksys WRT G wireless router to which her cable modem is connected She also has a Windows laptop with a wireless network adapter which uses the same Linksys wireless router to connect to the internet Both computers connect through the wireless router to the internet with no problem Now for the problem I cannot get either computer to see the other computer on the network though both can see and successfully use the shared internet connection through the wireless router I've run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine and have checked the settings for the Win machine to make sure that the network is NOT trying to use the HomeGroup feature and that the network locaton is set as HOME I've also checked that the Network Advanced options are correctly set Other See Can't on Network Computers to enable network discovery file and printer Can't See Other Computers on Network sharing public folder sharing and media streaming Password protected sharing is turned off and encryption is set at bit In checking the router I wasn't there when the router was set up and my sister remembers little about how it was done she THINKS that maybe the cable guy who installed their cable internet service did it it shows an Unprotected connection While I have explained to her that this is dangerous everything I have read indicates that though it is ill advised it should still function She is hesitant to have me fiddle with the router--since with some justification she fears that she may lose her internet connection which as I said works fine now I readily confess that I am not a networking expert by any means I did successfully set up a similar setup of my own wireless router Win system and Win XP system cable modem But when I did it once I had configured everything each computer showed up on the other and file and printer sharing works fine If anyone has any suggestions as to what I may be missing or something I can check I'd be very appreciative Just a caveat that I may be slow to reply since checking anything or trying anything requires a physical trip to my sister's house Any suggestions welcomed

Small office network, just moved into a new building. Trying to connect a laptop to the network to use shared resources. Machine is running XP, Workgroup name is the same (has been checked several times) and no other computers show up in My Network Places. Can connect to the internet just fine, can also connect to computers on the network if the path is entered manually. I need however to connect to a shared printer on another computer and if it cannot locate the computer on the network I'm not sure how to connect to the shared printer. This happens whether the laptop is connected to the network wireless or wired.

None of the other computers in my house can see me (4 others), but I can see them and transfer files to their computers. I used to have Norton Systemworks 2005, but I uninstalled that so I doubt it's firewalling me. I d/l'd AVG free and ZoneAlarm free versions and added the network IP range to allow it (which allowed me to see them, but not the opposite). Anyone know what it could be? Windows firewall is off.

Oh and we all have XP (Though I have Pro and I think everyone else has Home)
