WSUS for non-Microsoft products

Q: WSUS for non-Microsoft products

We have a new WSUS server running WSUS 3.0 sp1 on Windows Server 2008. I'm new to this so I was wondering if anybody would know it's it's capability be to deploy non-Microsoft installs and upgrades. I'm specificially thinking about Adobe products (mostly Adobe Acrobat). We will need to upgrade all of the computers on our network from version Acrobat 8 to version 9 pretty soon. Will there be a way to do that? Will there be a way to deploy updates when they come out? Or just one or the other? Is that pretty much up to the individual vendor? Do they have to make a special package that we put on the server? Or can we make one ourselves? Would that be hard?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I stupidly read where if I went to change settings in the Windows Update and unchecked the box for updates to all Microsoft Products and notify me of new products.  Now I do not receive any updates to the Microsoft Office products.

I cannot get that check box back, it has totally disappeared.

What I was trying to do is eliminate the annoying Win 10 stuff that keeps coming in.  I don't want Win 10 and I don't want Microsoft's constant harassing by downloading KB3035583 all the time.

Can anyone help me get this check box back??  Unfortunately when I did it to my laptop I also did it to my sister's brand new laptop, so now I have two systems that need help.

Thank you in advance.

I found a nice surprise last night - - Microsoft saves your product downloads AND you may reuse it.

Sign in to your Microsoft account and access:
https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/DisplayDownloadHistoryPageand there's the list.

So what? Well after the HD took a dump, I had to reinstall a ton of stuff and Steets & Trips was lost. I was very pleased to get another copy whereas Streets & Trips has been withdrawn and MS wants us to use Bing Maps in its place.

Windows 8 itself is updating fine using Windows Update. However, it doesn't provide updates for Office and other MS products. Where it says in the WU dialog box "You receive updates for:" it indicates "Windows Only." Going into Windows Update settings does not offer the "Microsoft Update" option that is available in windows 7. The link to "find out more" about updating other MS products takes me to this very unhelpful page: http://winbeta.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-US

I know from seeing others' screen shots in this forum that updating for other Microsoft products is not disabled in Windows 8. How do I update Office (I know there are new sucurity updates for Office that were released today and I'd like to have them!)?

A:Can't update other Microsoft products

Welcome

In Windows 8, currently at least, you need to add the option to update other Microsoft products with Windows update:

1. Open Control Panel
2. Select Windows Update
3. Select 'Get updates for other Microsoft Products: Find out more'
4. When the web page opens select Install

It will now scan for additional updates and make them available. it will also add the option to Windows update settings.

Hello.

I just reinstalled win7 on a asus eeepc 1005pe. I modified the iso with rt7lite and removed some components (like multi-media in IE). I wanted to make it lighter, as this is a pretty crappy PC.

Anyhow. I installed, all is working fine. No bugs/problems, except for the fact I cannot enable updates for other microsoft products. When I click on 'find out more' nothing happens.. no response, does anyone has got this problem or know maybe the cause and how to fix it?

MGADiagtool report here > cannot enable updates for other microsoft products

A:cannot enable updates for other microsoft products

This is almost certainly a result of using rt7lite - you'll be lucky if that's the only glitch.

we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

It'd be interesting to see the results of a CheckSUR run - but it could well make things worse rather than better, so only run it if you're happy with the idea of another reinstall.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attch it in your reply.

A:8e Bsod Only When Installing Microsoft Products...

http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x8eThese are usually hardware compatibility issues - but also may be driver related or BIOS related. It has to do with how they access the different parts of your system - so you can't rule it out just because other programs don't do it (because they'll access your system differently).Did you change/add any hardware just before this started to occur? If so, that's likely to be the culprit here.Also, you can check your Event Viewer for details of the error messages by using this HowTo: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/

this seems to be an issue due to IE11, you can workaround by (temporarily) adding Microsoft.com to the Compatibility View Mode list

Hello Robwan and welcome to the forums

There is no such thing as a dumb question, if you learn something from it then it's quite the opposite

You'll be glad to hear it does have a simple solution though. Open Windows Update and in the panel on the left you will see a few links, click on Change settings. Tick the box that is second from the bottom

Hi guys,
I've been trying to get updates for microsoft office.
If I open up Windows Updates and choose " Get updates for other products"
It takes me to a blank page at Microsoft Update
I have never had this issue in the past. I have last night restored my computer back to factory settings. I can get windows updates but not updates for other products.
Any suggestions?
I have tried disabling my security suite.
Could the problem be I am using IE 10 with windows 7? Generally after an install, I just use IE 8 or 9 and I have never had this problem surface before...

My employer has mandated that we use Lotus Notes for our email solution. How do I get the standard Microsoft default in PROJECT and/or WORD to recognize the NOTES address book vs requiring Outlook. I have set my internet defaults to NOTES. Specifics would be in trying to define RESOURCES in PROJECT or in using MS WORD/TOOLS/ENVELOPES and LABELS (probably anyplace in MS that selects an address book).

A:Using Lotus Notes address book from Microsoft Products

I don't think that is possible. Microsoft is very keen in making sure that if you use ms Products it needs to integrate with other MS Products. I could not find anything on that subject. Word does not have converters and does not recognize the names.nsf file. Now if you could convert that names.nsf into something like outlook express .pab/wab file that might be worth a Try. It may then be able to find the .pab file to use it as the address book.

A:Microsoft office products- opening email attachments

What email program are you using? Are you using Outlook or another email client?
If you aren't using Outlook, check the settings in your email client; you may be able to select the default programs used to open attachments, and navigate to your legal install of Office.
If you are using Outlook, are you using POP, IMAP or Exchange? You may need to go to Tools>Trust Center>Add ins and disable the add ins.
Are you using a browser-based web app? Again, you may need to go into the settings and make sure the proper installation of Office is selected.

I am trying to get Office updates on Windows 7 HP, but when I click on the "Find out more" link to activate Microsoft update nothing happens - it behaves as it were a dead link.

I'm wondering if this may be because IE isn't installed as I have a European version that shipped without it and I use Firefox as my browser.

Windows updates works fine. A vista box I have worked OK too - I recall it opened the update website which made me think the abscence of IE was the issue.

Browsing to the update site manually just tells me that access is through the control panel now.

I'd rather not install IE unless I have to to make this work.

Any ideas?

Hi. I've been an IT student for a while now but I don't have more than an overview of Servers. Can a server control any policies on it's clients without using group policies and active directory? I'm trying to understand configuring clients to use a WSUS server when you can't use active directory. Instead, would you have to configure each individual client, using local group policy, to update from the WSUS instead of the Update website? Thank you for any help. Shannon.

A:Windows 7 and WSUS

Hi Shanon Welcome to TSF

WSUS is windows update system that will monitor updates released by MS and tell you so you can approve or decline updates before they are applied to all the Computers in your domain environment so instead of computers going out to MS site and looking up updates and then downloading them individually they will be looking at the WSUS server and WSUS will download updates one time and then apply to rest of the computers (saves bandwidth)
As for WSUS and group policy - WSUS gets updates - GPO created for WSUS will dictate which updates will go to which workstation in which OU
Again this does not mean that client can't open up Windows update from Control panel and hit the link to "check online for updates from MS Update" and download whatever they feel like

Hi all and a Happy New Year.
Right let's get back into the swing of things.
I am running WSUS on a Windows 2003 Web Edition.
WSUS comes with the free Microsoft database not SQL Server
My question to you all is!!!

Is it possible to access the database files the same way you would do a SQL Query?

I've got a copy of the WSUS Data files and i'm looking into extracting only the data i require from the files, rather than printing out the very good report that is generated by WSUS.

Any ideas welcome

I have WSUS v.3.1 installed on a a server loaded with Windows Server 2003. The software was working fine up until a week or so ago, and now I am unable to download updates. All updates tell me that "This update does not have Microsoft license terms". I have uninstalled/reinstalled the software 3 times and still run into the same issue. I have researched the issue online and have found no help. I am hoping that someone has experienced the same issue as myself, and can help me in resolving the issue. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi all I volunteer at a senior center computer facility We provide WSUS do I needfort What Windows HOME machines with access to the internet We reimage the machines What do I needfort WSUS between sessions and often between users to keep the machines virus and malware free We also allow users to plug into our system with their own laptops so they can access the internet with their equipment We chose to only update one of our machines to Windows That machines insistance on downloading updates has been an issue I typically install updates on Saturday on the Windows machines but the Windows machine won't let us manage the updates As a result it is often out of commission between when the updates are available and Saturday when I can thaw the machine so it can install the updates and freeze the machine again We mostly turn off the Windows machine for the rest of the week if Windows updates are available We have years to plan and accumulate funds to address this situation I assume we are going to need to update all the machines to PRO Buy a Server Buy a WSUS server Network them all together and setup some WSUS scripts Hire a networking consultant Will we still be able to accommodate home users and android and apple tablets if our computers are controlled by a domain I assume this will complicate DCHP This is so over my head and I am the go to person on this How much is this going to cost at a minimum Can this be done by people who only know how to manage a router and modem This may just force us to close our doors

A:What do I needfort WSUS

There are a couple of settings that may help avoid the need for Pro or WSUS.

Since the Anniversary Update Windows 10 Home can set Active Hours...

I know this is going to be vague but I need to get a WSUS server running on a Windows 2003 Server to deploy patches to around 600 machines. I have downloaded the needed version of WSUS and installed it.

Any advice? Anyone use WSUS?

I have read the "white papers" and it seems to be a farily user friendly application.

I recently installed SP for Windows Server Update Services on all of our k servers I have not had any problems Error WSUS SP1 - 421 except I noticed that it was not working correctly and i attempted to use the management site which did not allow me in I was giving a database error auth failure I have been looking around the web and i am more or less having the same issue as http www wsus info forums lofiversion index php t html When i checked the event viewer i noticed that it said it was having authentication errors So i viewed the properties of the Update Service and found it was trying to log on with some weird credentials I changed it to use the system credentials which was enough to atleast get the service started However im still having issues with actually having WSUS connect WSUS SP1 - Error 421 to the database Has anyone found a solution to this problem short of uninstalling and reinstalling WSUS wis nbsp

A:WSUS SP1 - Error 421

The only solution to this problem that i have found is to re-run the setup and uninstall the database. Make sure to leave the update files and logs.

Then simply re-install the wsus and it is up and working without hardly any configuration.

Before July 2010, XP SP2 clients can download patches from WSUS. After that, all XP SP2 clients cannot download patches from WSUS but SP3 clients can.

Is it Microsoft's policy?
If yes, can use WSUS to download SP3 to SP2 clients?

Thanks

Kenny

A:XP SP2 download patches from WSUS

Microsoft has been pushing out Windows XP and some other products, removing support for them in favour of newer products, so yes it is.

I would have thought you could get XP SP3 on machines with SP2, but not too sure.

I have WSUS running on several servers some are running and some are running the new I have noticed on some of our smaller servers that WSUS is taking up more space than i think it should I need some way to slim it up delete old updates or just bloated WSUS Cleaing up simply make more room on my server Mainly on WSUS I have a server that has limited hard drive space and i used the wsusdebugtool exe toolurgeunneededfiles command to clean it up and it did However i dont understand how it works If all the computers have received their updates why is it so big Also how come when i approve a few updates it has to download a HUGE amount of data Cleaing up bloated WSUS It almost seems as if WSUS just isn t worth it for the size Am i just doing something way wrong here Or is it just accepted that WSUS is going to download updates by the gigs and use GB on your hard drive Please help nbsp Cleaing up bloated WSUS

A:Cleaing up bloated WSUS

The main thing I can think of is the -

The option "Download update files to this server only when updates are approved" must be checked / selected or else, it will re-download those "not needed" updates,during the next sychronization schedule.

This here is one of the main offenders. If you don't tell it not to download it all it will.

Hello everybody,I have a small simple question; Can I install WSUS on Sever 2003 without service pack 1? I mean I didn't install the SP1 on my 2003server for some reason! Now I'm wondering if the WSUS would work with my server or not?Your instant reply will be highly Appreciated! Thanks & warm regards:Ihab N. ZAABALAWI. Learner!

A:Wsus & Server2003 Issue!

Hi Ihab N. ZI'm not 100% sure, but I've got the system specs which are needed for WSUS to run below. That would show me that it should easily be able to run...The minimum spec for a WSUS server should be;1Ghz CPU or better 512 MB RAM Sufficient Hard drive capacity for all the downloads, recommended specs follow A minimum of 6 GB free space is required for the volume where WSUS stores content; 30 GB is recommended. A minimum of 2 GB free space is required on the volume where WSUS Setup installs Windows SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE). 100 Mbit network connection to the server. The server install required is not standard, see the additional requirements below.Additional RequirementsTo run WSUS your server will also need; .Net framework 1.1 BITS 2.0 Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 IIS 5 or 6David

A:Using PSEXEC and VBS script with WSUS

Ok after a few weeks of playing around with the script and lots of help from Karlchen over at http://forum.sysinternals.com/default.asp I got it running, it goes a little something like this:

@echo off
:: Programme: remoteupd.bat
:: Function : copy update.vbs to \\target
:: launch update.vbs on \\target using psexec
:: &nbs p; will read computerlist.txt and launch update.vbs on each
:: &nbs p; of the hostnames\IPs inside the file
:: Status : third draft, arguments given on commandline, uses a listfile
:: Note : we will assume "computerlist.txt" is located in F:\Work Applications\WSUS Force Update, too.
:: Usage : remoteupd.bat adminuser password
::
:: Check that 2 arguments have been given on the commandline
if "%2"=="" (
echo usage: remoteupd.bat adminuser password
echo Try again.
exit /b 1
)
set ADMUSER="ADMIN USER\DOMAIN"
set ADMPASS="PASSWORD"
set LISTFILE=computerlist.txt

:: go to the source folder
f:
cd \Work Applications\WSUS Force Update

:: check that the listfile is there
if not exist %LISTFILE% (
echo Listfile %LISTFILE% not found. Create it and try again.
exit /b 1
)

:: Finally, all checks done, let us do our work in a for loop
for /F %%i in (%LISTFILE%) do (
REM 1. net use if ADMPASS has got no space character the
REM double quotes may be removed
net use \\%%i\C$ /user:"ADMIN USER\DOMAIN" "PASSWORD"

REM 2. copy update.vbs
copy update.vbs \\%%i\C$\update.vbs

REM 3. disconnect from \\%TARGET%
net use \\%%i\C$ /dele

REM 4. psexec.exe, make sure this command is in 1 line!
psexec.exe \\%%i -u "ADMIN USER\DOMAIN" -p "PASSWORD" -e cscript.exe //B C:\UPDATE.vbs
)

:: 5. Done, delete variables
set admuser=
set admpass=
set listfile=

This will force any updates to the machines located in the "COMPUTERLIST.TXT" from my WSUS server by running the "UPDATE.VBS" script.

I however now have a few more questions for any WSUS people out there.

1. How can I keep duplicate computer names out of my WSUS server? I ran a "WSUS /DETECTNOW" script on a bunch of machines with positive results but of course a whole bunch of duplicates, is it possible to get them removed in a quick fashion?

2. New machines that are imaged and deployed? most effictive way to get them onto WSUS.

3. Machines that are no longer in production but still show up in AD? Therfore showing up in WSUS, how do I "cleanup" WSUS and get rid of machines that are no longer in production?

Thanks for your help.

Any ideas on what to look for?

I manage roughly 400 machines on a domain, each using Windows 7 Professional and our updates are pushed out using WSUS. We had one domain connected machine install update KB3035583 and is now being prompted to upgrade to Windows 10. I went into WSUS to block
the update as it would severely impact our production environment. However, KB3035583 doesn't show up when searching WSUS.
I've read that it shouldn't, and that domain joined computers won't recieve KB3035583. If that is true, then how is it that at least one machine on our domain has it installed and is now prompting for upgrade? How can I block this update on the rest of our
network?

I am running WSUS from a Win 2003 server which is out of free space and giving an error message.

Question 1: what is it safe to delete from the WSUS\WsusContent folder to make more room (it is currently taking up 32 Gig of a 40 gig hard drive)

Question 2: I don't know if this is related or not, but when I tried to open WSUS, I got the error: Server Error in '/WSUSAdmin' Application. Parser Error Message: Unable to load file 'adminstrings'

Then it refers to line 258 of source file c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\config\machine.config.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

A:WSUS error and out of space

I think some system specs are in hand here like processor, speed, ram, etc. Could you please post as much as you can. Are you running this server for a business or a private venture?

I have a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server where the C drive is full with less the 1 GB left. I would like to move some things off of C and put them on my E drive. I have Endpoint Protection I would like to remove as well as WSUS and install them on the E partition. Do you know if there is any option to install these programs to other drives instead of the C drive? Can I remove Endpoint and reinstall on my E drive? (I only have Endpoint installed on 2 clients as of now) Thanks. Patrick

I wonder if you can help.

How do I stop Windows Updates from pushing out in our domain environment.

We are having a lot of problems with a third party web application and im adamant its these so called "Cumulative Security Updates for IE"

All I get from the development team is "it work on our machines" and im not getting anywhere.

The answer is Firefox as it works fine but I'm not ready to throw that 100 users quite yet.

Anyway, so our AD has computers OU when they initially join and we drag to a X64 or X86 OU depending on architecture. WSUS seems to push update when joined to this OU but I cant find where the setting is for this. Any ideas where I can look?

Hey guys I ran into a snag when trying to install NET from Programs and Features on our Windows Enterprise domain machines We recently started using Windows Server Update Services WSUS for our domain machines to save bandwidth when installing using when 0x800F081F WSUS on Domain updates on everybody's PCs I created a GPO and configured automatic installs as well as specified the Intranet WSUS server connection I did NOT disable checking online so in Windows there is an option to quot check online for updates quot and in Windows we have this However it seems to ONLY check the WSUS server when trying to add optional features and thus causes an error as the files are not there I did some searches and found what was said to be a solution enabling this policy Code 0x800F081F when using WSUS on Domain Administrative Templates 0x800F081F when using WSUS on Domain System Specify settings for 0x800F081F when using WSUS on Domain optional component installation and component repair to Enabled and checking the box Contact Windows Update directly to download repair content instead of Windows Server Update Services WSUS What's interesting is that this DID fix the problem on Windows and machines But on Windows I still get the error I have seen threads where people said that GPO fixed it for them so I'm not sure why it isn't working in my case Yes I've done gpupdate force several times and it's not just one machine that has this problem all of our W domain machines do it To clarify we're using the x version of Windows Enterprise Not LTSB just the normal one Does anyone have any other ideas Yes I know I can mount the install ISO and use quot dism quot to do it but that's a huge pain when we have numerous domain computers I also don't want to specify the wim location in Group Policy because we have a combination of and computers on our domain and that would be problematic if I only point to a Windows image Really the solution here SHOULD be to force it to check against Windows Update online rather than our WSUS server but somehow it doesn't want to do that Here is our Windows Update GPO

A:0x800F081F when using WSUS on Domain

I have the same exact issue in my environment.

The GPO setting to bypass WSUS for adding features works on 2012 and 8.x but not on Windows 10. This is not just one or two but all Windows 10 Enterprise systems that have this issue.

If you watch the network, when you try to add a feature it still connects to the WSUS server instead of Microsoft directly, as though it's ignoring the GPO option.

If they are removed from the domain, it works fine downloading from Microsoft directly.

Using source media via command line also works, but I don't want to do that long term for many systems on the network.

Anyone found a fix yet?

I figured this is probably the most likely place people will see it Just giving everyone a heads up that you ll probably break your WSUS this month if you aren t paying close attention to every package There are two KBs out there one release off cycle on April th and one released in the May update on the th AFAIK both only affect Server installs of WSUS The first one might have been pulled as I haven t seen it KB This one seems to just botch everything so I think you ll not want to apply it if you see it Heads up KB for WSUS servers - PSA KB3148812 WSUS and KB3159706 WSUS - Spiceworks I think that the second one supersedes the first which is why it s not showing up The second is definitely still there It s KB Heads up KB for WSUS servers - WSUS - WSUS PSA KB3148812 and KB3159706 Spiceworks - Page It s okay to install this update but there is some post configuration that HAS to be done in order for WSUS to start working again Follow the steps in the KB and you should be okay https support microsoft com en-us kb That said it s kind of an interesting update It adds support for quot This article describes an update to a feature that enables Windows Server Update Services WSUS to natively decrypt Electronic Software Distribution ESD in Windows Server and Windows Server R quot Which sounds like Microsoft is going to send down the anniversary update to Windows encrypted to WSUS and you ll be required to have this installed for Windows upgrades and feature updates to work Note You must install this update on any WSUS server that is intended to sync and distribute Windows upgrades and feature updates that are released after May Click to expand This also makes me wonder that given it s for Server I m not sure yet if there is a equivalent patch or not You might be required to have server WSUS in order to upgrade Windows clients nbsp

A:Using PSEXEC and VBS script with WSUS

Ok after a few weeks of playing around with the script and lots of help from Karlchen over at http://forum.sysinternals.com/default.asp I got it running, it goes a little something like this:

@echo off
:: Programme: remoteupd.bat
:: Function : copy update.vbs to \\target
:: launch update.vbs on \\target using psexec
:: &nbs p; will read computerlist.txt and launch update.vbs on each
:: &nbs p; of the hostnames\IPs inside the file
:: Status : third draft, arguments given on commandline, uses a listfile
:: Note : we will assume "computerlist.txt" is located in F:\Work Applications\WSUS Force Update, too.
:: Usage : remoteupd.bat adminuser password
::
:: Check that 2 arguments have been given on the commandline
if "%2"=="" (
echo usage: remoteupd.bat adminuser password
echo Try again.
exit /b 1
)
set ADMUSER="ADMIN USER\DOMAIN"
set ADMPASS="PASSWORD"
set LISTFILE=computerlist.txt

:: go to the source folder
f:
cd \Work Applications\WSUS Force Update

:: check that the listfile is there
if not exist %LISTFILE% (
echo Listfile %LISTFILE% not found. Create it and try again.
exit /b 1
)

:: Finally, all checks done, let us do our work in a for loop
for /F %%i in (%LISTFILE%) do (
REM 1. net use if ADMPASS has got no space character the
REM double quotes may be removed
net use \\%%i\C$ /user:"ADMIN USER\DOMAIN" "PASSWORD"

REM 2. copy update.vbs
copy update.vbs \\%%i\C$\update.vbs

REM 3. disconnect from \\%TARGET%
net use \\%%i\C$ /dele

REM 4. psexec.exe, make sure this command is in 1 line!
psexec.exe \\%%i -u "ADMIN USER\DOMAIN" -p "PASSWORD" -e cscript.exe //B C:\UPDATE.vbs
)

:: 5. Done, delete variables
set admuser=
set admpass=
set listfile=

Can anyone advise please? Tried the documentation and searches, but no avail. Here's my story:

1. installed wsus on server \\APP1 (Windows 2003 server)
2. setup GPO at domain level, with settings in windows components / windows updates:
- "configure automatics updates"
- "windows update" (setting http://APP1 in both fields)
3. fyi, the gpo settings are proper, as reports indicate, as well as registry check on pc
4. from client, reboot and execute from command line: wuauclt.exe /detectnow
5. wait, reboot, wait (overnight even!)

...end result, no computers appear in the WSUS admin pages

...retried with a different (new) WSUS server, redoing GPO edits... but no change

Any great ideas out there?

Thanks!

A:Unable to add clients to new WSUS setup

Just to add, the 2nd server I attempted the install on does have Sharepoint (I heard that complicates things) but it's important to know the original server attempt doesn't have Sharepoint, but still no go.

Also I did try to use the port :8530 in front of each GPO entry, but also no go.

Ideas? tx

Hi all I've recently started in a new job as an ICT technician I'm working with a system admin at a 7 WSUS & Windows Deployment Enterprise local Windows 7 Enterprise Deployment & WSUS school In previous jobs I've always used a quot gold image quot to deploy out to machines In the new job there is no such thing unfortunately making new installs a long drawn out affair lots of additional software installs Office Visio custom programs etc I have some spare time on my hands soon so was thinking of creating a standard image that I can deploy just via USB to new machines that need to be imaged I already have a WinPE boot disk and understand the concept of sysprep and configuring in audit mode after a clean install this will be my approach I will probably then use CloneZilla to image the final product and deploy onto single machines where needed I have a few questions How should I handle Windows updates These are normally pushed out via WSUS - Some things should not be installed latest IE for example WSUS is only pushing out IE due to some compatibility issues with sites that are currently used there may be other updates that are not installed but I'm not - What would be the best approach here Not using the standard Windows update before I sysprep or joining the domain installing updates via wsus then leaving the domain and running a sysprep Being as all the machines will be the same make and model would it be worth including drivers into the mix or will they be removed with sysprep I believe this step may be optional Will local user accounts be kept after the sysprep I need to set a specific local admin account if possible No biggie if I can't Thanks in advance for your suggestions This would save me hours possibly days over the coming weeks

Don't have time to answer all your questions, but I can tell you that you do not need to join the domain to use WSUS, just configure the proper settings either in Group Policy or in the registry directly. Having them part of the domain only aids in mass configuration.

My computer is on an AD domain and we have a WSUS server serving updates. However only certain categories of updates are auto approved so typically what I used to do with windows 7 is every once in a while click "Check for updates from microsoft" and this would bypass WSUS and reach out to microsoft for updates. Now this Windows 10 install USED TO have that button but it does not anymore. How can I restore this functionality as I am sure there are plenty of non-critical updates for Windows 10 over the lats few months that I am missing. I am a local/domain admin so access is not an issue.

Thanks in advance

Hi I have an issue with Windows clients using WSUS I have had a GPO set up to apply to All my computers in my domain majority of them are Win and WSUS is working perfectly updates are downloaded and installed automatically and when user shut down they have the install updates and shutdown option Settings in the GPO are auto download and schedule the install everyday at WSUS Windows not install 8.1 Updates will am from a local WSUS server These settings as stated are working perfectly fine on Win clients and updates are installed with no user intervention However with the Windows clients the updates are downloaded to the machines from the WSUS server but they are not installed on the computer There is no option to update and restart or update and shutdown they just sit in Control Panel Windows Update Windows 8.1 will not install WSUS Updates until someone manually goes in and clicks install updates I have installed the required updates onto my WSUS server for Win I have ensured the GPO is applying to the machine which it is i have also tried settings the 'Install during automatic maintenance' option in the same policy and configuring all options under maintenance scheduler and still nothing Windows 8.1 will not install WSUS Updates I can see that the settings are applying to machines via RSOP and the settings are set and unchangeable in teh relevant areas of Windows Automatic Maintenance runs and the time and date stamp for last run time changes but the updates are not installed as part of this and they are still sat in Windows Updates with the 'Install Updates' button UNLESS i MANUALLY Windows 8.1 will not install WSUS Updates run the Maintenance process from Action Center Obviously i don't want my OS update plan dependent on users having to manually navigate to install updates and all this works fine on Win clients Any advice nbsp

Hello.

I have a WSUS server having the following specs:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1

WSUS MC 3.0

I connect all of my PC within my domain with my WSUS Server.

The Win7 and Win10 PC does not experience any trouble when checking for updates but the Win 8.1 Pro shows an error 800B0001 when I check for updates.

Do you know the best way to solve this?

A:Windows 8 Pro WSUS error 800B0001

Here is the solution that worked for me.  The only issue I had was that my Windows 8 client still errored (different error than the 800B0001 error I had earlier) the first time I told it look for updates.  I had it check for updates a second
time and everything worked as expected.  It was provided on another thread that I was following as well:

KB2734608
Issues that are fixed
This update lets servers that are running Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.2 provide updates to computers that are running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

Additionally, the following issues are fixed by this update:

Installation of update 2720211 may fail if Service Pack 2 was previously uninstalled and then reinstalled.After you install update 2720221, health monitoring may fail if the WSUS server is configured to use SSL.

Additionally, this update includes the following fixes:

2530678
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530678/ )
System Center Update Publisher does not publish customized updates to a computer if WSUS 3.0 SP2 and the .NET Framework 4 are installed2530709
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530709/ )
"Metadata only" updates cannot be expired or revised in WSUS 3.0 SP22720211
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720211/ )
An update for Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 is available

Note Update 2720211 strengthens the WSUS communication channels.

Notes

After you install this update, Windows Update Agent (WUA) will be upgraded automatically.WSUS must be in a known, good working state for this update to work. WSUS must be able to synchronize from Microsoft Update, and clients must be able to communicate with the WSUS server. For more information about how to perform basic health checks on a
WSUS server, go to the following Microsoft TechNet websites:
Reindex the WSUS Database
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795(v=ws.10))

Use the Server Cleanup Wizard

I have had problems with Windows Update Standalone Installer in Windows 8.1, so I hoped WSUS 10.2.1 would solve the issue. First few runs - "w63 glb" error after a few seconds when using my PC desktop as target. Switched to USB as target; ran for 30 seconds, got "success" message. When I opened the installer, nothing I had chosen had downloaded and boxes were grayed out.There was an ExcludeList.txt, which listed 30 or so of the 70 updates I need to install. Tried twice; same result. Need to update is reaching critical mass.Thanks.

A:WSUS doesn't download updates

1: Go to Administrative Tools/Services, and stop the Windows Update service. 2: Then go to the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete ALL of the files and folders. 3: Then go back to Services and restart the Windows Update service which will recreate ALL of those folders again. 4: Then manually run the Update Service and everything should work. If you don't know how to manually start updates, reboot & Auto Updates should kick in.

I just built a WSUS server and a have Windows 7 wim without any Service Packs installed. Should I just add all the updates through dism or add the Service Packs first? If I do have to install the Service Pack first, can I just skip SP1 and go straight
to SP2? I know the Service Packs and some updates are downloaded as .exe files. I know how to install the Service Packs, but wanted to know what is the best practice to updating a wim from scratch? Are there any classifications from WSUS that I should start
updating my wim first? IE: Service Pack, Update Rollups, Upgrades, Updates, etc.

A:Using WSUS repository and DISM to inject updates into WIM

Never did get the PowerShell version to work.  In the end, the process I'm using is:

Install VLS Windows 7 to VM. (Or Custom WIM)Scan run WSUS update (with nothing approved).After machine reports back, approve everything except .NET 4.x, Silverlight, and IE 9, 10, and 11.Re-scan machine, repeat steps 3 and 4 until no more updates show as needed.From DISM CMD, mount WIM.  (dism /mount-wim /wimfile:C:\MDT\WIM\install.wim /mountdir:C:\Mount /index:1)Run command: Start /w for /R \\virtualmachine\C$\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ %f in (*.cab) do DISM /image:C:\Mount /add-package /packagepath:"%f"When completed, dismount and commit. (Dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:C:\Mount /commit)Replace install.wim in MDT OS Sources folder.

"Most" updates are already applied when the updated WIM is installed.WSUS is necessary to prevent Express Install Files typically fetched from Windows Update.There's no place like 127.0.0.1

My organization uses WSUS to push out updates. I want to block the Anniversary Update from being deployed by WSUS. I have Googled looking for a KB number for this update, but not found one yet. I have found updates on WSUS FOR version 1607, but not the update TO 1607 itself. Can someone help me out?

A:How to block WSUS from deploying Anniversary update

The Anniversary Update is called a "Feature Update", and is not distributed by WSUS by default. You have to enable it.

[url="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3095113"]https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3095113[/url

Servicing updates ARE distributed by WSUS by default, but you would have to already have it installed.

A:Windows Server 2008 AD & WSUS Errors

Hi acurasd,

Improper DNS configuration in your Server causes a lot of networking issue including GPO and other things.
Make sure that DHCP is enabled and configured from your Win08 Server, disable DHCP from your router if you have not.

For your Server (Main DC), here's a proper config:
192.168.1.5 --> Static IP of Server
255.255.255.0 --> Subnet
192.168.1.1 - Default Gateway

192.168.1.5 - DNS - You have to point the DNS Address to the Server itself.

In DNS Manager from your Win08 Server, right click on the Server Name, choose Properties, locate Forwarders Tab and add the DNS Resolvers here. If you don't know those DNS's you may call your ISP.

Assign DHCP to all Client PC's on your network, match the ipconfig /all from your Server, make sure that the Client PC has a DNS of 192.168.1.5, Def. Gateway of 192.168.1.1 and Subnet of 255.255.255.0.

Now, test your GPO and WSUS, see if issue persist. Pls. keep us posted.

when I update my Win7 clients monthly after the Tuesday patchday with the newest WSUS Updates from Microsoft it takes up to 5 hours until the client has detected the needed updates. During this time there is no high CPU or disk utilization.
Win8.1 or WinSrv 2012 R2 clients only take 5-10 minutes for the same process. All machines get the updates from a Win2012R2 WSUS within a local network (1GBit).
How can I reduce this time for Win7 clients?

A:Loading IE10 via WSUS gives me a 9c59 error

SFC apparently managed to fix one error - and CheckSUR found no problems.
The installation appears to have been halted by the following error...
2013-12-10 09:22:26, Error CBS Failed to pre- stage package: Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.2.9200.16521 [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]

I would suggest attempting to bypass the error by installing IE11, rather than IE10 (it sometimes works!)

If that doesn't work, then try downloading the IE10 full-install package from here...

Download Internet Explorer 10 - Microsoft Windows

and see if that works.

Hello Everyone,
We have around 100 systems in our Labs using Windows 7 x64
Downloading and Installing updates for each one of them will eat away our bandwidth.It's already slow ,here in India.
I was wondering whether we can host a proxy which would download updates and save it.The computers on the network can then check for updates on the proxy server and download them rather than visiting microsoft.com.
Is this possible?
Need your advice!
ThankYou

I read that as of August 16th, WSUS would be able to start pushing the 1607 update to Windows 10 to machines.

But, I'm not seeing anything for doing so within the available updates within WSUS, and I'd much prefer to use it than trying to update through flash drives like I had to do during the Windows upgrade period.

Hi there,

I run IT for a 70 people who are all running Windows 8.1.  I'm not seeing the Windows 10 reservation screen on their machines to which I have seen and activate don my home machines.

All updates are pushed out via my WSUS but the required update (KB3035583) is not showing in my WSUS.  It is available as an optional update if I choose to search Window's updates for updates.

Naturally I want this to be pushed out via WSUS to save time.

Any ideas would be much appreciated as I can't find anything online.

Thank you.

A:Windows 10 reservation update (KB3035583) not showing in my WSUS

Hi,
One of the files deposited by KB3035583 in the folder "GWX" -- some have interpreted that as "Get Windows 10" -- is "config.xml," which includes a long list of instructions on how the ad-based notification system will work.

The additions were atop the previous (EnableEnterpriseSku)false(/EnableEnterpriseSku) and (EnableDomainJoined)false(/EnableDomainJoined), that blocked the ad campaign from Windows Enterprise, the corporate edition available only through volume licensing deals,
and barred it from Windows devices that connect to a network domain. The latter would rule out the notifications' appearance on devices running the Pro edition, such as Windows 7 Pro, when they're joined to a corporate domain.

Very long story short removing the following line from the web.config on the ClientWebService and ReportingWebService fixed all my WSUS problems.

<--DELETE THIS LINE

--

Changing "remove" to "add" [name] works too, but might as well just remove it and let IIS do its thing.

I was under the impression even non admins can have their PC's updated with WSUS but when I log in as a general user onto a machine I never get any kind of update prompt or download but the minute I log on as an admin I get the hourglass and the update downloads and then I get the prompt telling me the updates are ready to be installed.

How do I get this updating when non admins are logged in?

Today whilst doing a clean W7 SP1 Reinstall and a W10 Pro Reinstall, for some reason on both machines somehow the windows update was not fully functional.

A bit of research and came across this tool, which downloaded the relevant updates (progress in command line window):
WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection

Using "WSUS Offline Update", you can update any computer running Microsoft Windows and Office safely, quickly and without an Internet connection.
Please note the patch coverage information.Click to expand...

Edit: When before downloading, select folder for USB (so updates are in the folder).

Then launch the exe inside the created folder.

Also works for W8.1 as well as Office versions etc.
