SMART Short Self Test Fail

Q: SMART Short Self Test Fail

I ran Dell's PC Checkup and it failed on the SMART Short Self Test. From what I get this basically means my hard drive is going to fail any time, true? When I get a new hard drive can I use the Windows 7 code that's on my computer or will I have to re-buy Windows 7? Are there any tutorials for replacing the main hard drive? Thanks

Preferred Solution: SMART Short Self Test Fail

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: SMART Short Self Test Fail

Well the drive may fail sooner or later but its a good idea to get another. Yes, you can use the key on the sticker on the computer to activate windows. Better still, while the current drive is still alive, just save an image of the windows install using Macrium free or Acronis to an external drive, then you can just restore to the new drive- you wont even need to use the sticker code.

Imaging with free Macrium

Heres how to replace your hard drive:

Hi all,

I got my Compaq computer just 1 year ago. Recently, the monthly maintenence test ran and SMART Short Self Test failed(Failed (Error code: HD521-2W). What does this mean? I went online and many posts said that it meant my Hard drive is dying. Is that true? Are there no other ways to solve this problem except replace my HDD?

Hi,

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

Thanks for helping.

A:Question: Failed Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

hi Smurfette,

Welcome to the Forums.

The image below is the breakdown on how the LSC error codes mean.

The SMART short self-test that failed may have detected some certain sectors on the drive that are bad and predicted an imminent HDD failure so I would recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

A:G50 - targeted read test and smart short self test...

Hi there, Naveen-
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

The SMART Self-Test Unit means that the diagnostic utility failed to read some certain sectors on the drive and predicted an imminent HDD failure.

If with the test you did you are getting a SMART test or a smart short test failure then I believe you need to back up your data and be ready to replace the drive.

I recommend you contact Lenovo support and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

Update us how it goes.

Here is the message I am getting after running the lenovo solutions diagnostic  WHD01V000-UJ7WQFWhat does this mean?My computer is a week old, got it off ebay, new, but had been set up already.  It has been running quite slow, when I open 20 tabs in firefox it will glitch and sometimes freeze, sometimes I can't access my files, it just says file explorer on the top and displays nothing and I can't close them.  It has 6gb ram and a core i5, e431 model, so it shouldnt be running so slow and this diagnostic worries me.  I called Lenovo before running the diagnostic and they said it could be a hard drive failure.  Anyone know this error message?

A:SMART short self-test Warning???

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If the result of "SMART short self-test" returns an error code, the hard drive has indeed failed or is about to. Then you may want to do a repair or have a new hard disk.

Take a backup of all your data while the hard drive can still be accessed and contact Lenovo Technical support if you are under warranty.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

A:SMART Short Self Test - Failed HD521-2W

> Clone and replace WD Hard Drive?  If so, what is recommended WD replacement model? Your current disk-drive is 1000 GB.  So, any 1000 GB or 2000 GB drive will work, without any worries.Anything larger might have an issue, if the motherboard is "older". Note that WD offers a download of free "disk-cloning" software, as long as either the "source" or the "target" disk-drive was manufactured by WD. How "full" is your current drive?  Buy a new hard-drive, and backup all your data/files/music/pictures/bookmarks to it,while your current disk-drive is still working OK.  Or, "clone" your current disk-drive to the new drive. If the disk-drive is still under warranty from WD, WD will replace it.  You might have to pay for shipping it to WD. If the disk-drive is out-of-warranty, WD sometimes has a "customer loyalty" program. You tell WD the serial-number of the drive, and you get a discount on theh purchase of a new disk-drive from WD's online-store, and you don't have to return your current disk-drive.

HDD had faild it, so I've contacted your service immidiately, and they replaced it with a new HDD.  The laptop was in service for like 27 days, and when I got it, I had a problem booting up a system... When it finally started to work I couldn't download and install drivers normally, it stared to freeze, aborted the actions etc. Like the last time, I managed to download Lenovo Soultion Center and ran the tests, again. The result of the test was Warning for SMART Short Self Test and SMART Drive Self test. Can you somehow advise me what to do? Thanks in advance.  Result code: WHD01V000-HL0Y9G

Hi Dakilajk ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It would be best to contact tech support for the recommendation and decode of WHD01V000-HL0Y9G ,
and since you are experiencing freezing at this moment , back up your files as needed .

You may also run counter scan using similar diagnostic software as this to check further and verify the detected imminent drive read failure . SMART test are pre detection software to alert users to back up their files if the integrity test falls its set standard each different from different harddrive manufacturers ( example seagate , Western Digital etc.) .

LSC may be a bit sensitive to its SMART detection but then if you are having freezing issue , most likely it is doing its job as expected.

Hi,This is Aneesh. I m using HP Pavilion 14-n296tx TouchSmart Notebook PC. Few days back I had an issue in opening file manager. I was unable to open any files or run any application. Then I performed a system check. I got the following errorHard drive short DST check: FailedFailure ID: M0E4R1-77986Q-MFPV7G-60SF03Product ID: J8B57PA#ACJHow do I solve this issue? Do I need to replace the hard drive? Can I recover all my files? If I should change the hard drive, then can I use that as external storage unit? Is it possible to solve this issue at home or I need to take this notebook to service center? Approximately how much does this repair cost?System conf: Windows 10, 64 bit

I think this may mean my computer is history. It says,

DST Short Status
fail
error-code: 1000-0142
unit4: Drive self test failed. Status Byte=77

I'm still able to turn my computer on and windows appears and it seems like it works fine for about 5 seconds. I run a Dell Latitude D600, so I don't have a windows disk as the computer is older.

Any advice would greatly appreciatted.

bad hdd. replace with any 2.5 pata drive less than 137gb. is a sure thing. should be attached on the side with 1 screw holding down the caddy to the base. could go higher in size like a 250gb but with out knowing if you've updated your bios to support the larger size =/

Unable to boot my computer this morning, I ran hardware diagnostics. The computer passed the memory check and the SMART check but failed the Short DST.Error code: UFH3HF-000840-XD7V7F-60SL03Product ID: G8B26UC#ABAI know generally a failed DST test means the hard drive has gone bad, but I have yet to see an error code similar to mine on the forums so I thought I'd check, just in case.

A:Short DST Test Failed

Hi, Unfortunately, the code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the drive should be replaced.  The error codes are unique as they contain a hash other information such as the time of the test. Regards, DP-K

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Hi folks Short SMART Load Windows Failed, Self Won't 7 - It must be true that when it rains it pours I had a little malware problem with a laptop the other day Now I've got another problem on an entirely different machine I have a Compaq Presario CQ Y desktop that has been acting wonky the SMART Short Self Failed, Windows 7 Won't Load past few weeks I first noticed the machine was running pretty slowly SMART Short Self Failed, Windows 7 Won't Load and was periodically kicking out messages that applications needed to be shut down because there wasn't enough memory to run them The machine has only GB but it's really only used for surfing the Internet I ran the HP Compaq hardware diagnostic tools and it came up with a fail on the SMART Short Self Test I rebooted and was able to get into the OS just fine A couple of days later I ran the diagnostic tools again and the SMART Short Self Test passed So I didn't think too much about it A few days later I had trouble starting Windows got a message saying Windows is unable to start So I ran Startup Repair and was able to get into the OS I immediately started thinking maybe it was a virus malware so ran a bunch of scans with Avast pro version Malewarebyte's Anti-Malware rootkill and a few others Stuff was detected but the programs were able to remove the malware virus This morning however I can't get into Windows at all When I tried System Restore I got a brief message about the D drive being corrupt Startup Repair can't fix the problem and keeps wanting me to run System Restore I've tried to restore back to four different restore points but to no avail Realizing that HP Compaq puts the recovery programs on the D partition I figured I'd use my recovery disks instead I booted with the recovery disk but still can't repair or load Windows I ran the hardware diagnostics tool from the recovery disk though and it came up with a fail on the SMART short self test again I'd REALLY like to avoid having to replace the hard drive if it's not necessary so my question is this - When the SMART short self test fails is it ALWAYS because the drive is bad Or could it be a virus that's trying to make me think the drive is bad What are my options and what steps should I take Thanks everyone

@JockoTheTaco?, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You should buy a HDD the same size or larger to assure that the Recovery media will work with it. Here is a guide to help you with the replacement. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Welcome to TSF

DST stands for Drive Self Test, If it fails the test it means your drive is failing. You will need to replace it.

SMART is a hard drive error reporting feature available on SOME (not all) hard drives, via hard drive firmware.

Check your BIOS Setup and see if it is enabled. IF the HD has the feature you will be able to enable it. It is an option usually in the same window listing your hard drives.

I think I had a short in the electrical cable of the cord on my computer and the computer crashed. I looked at the cable and one of the prongs in one of the three holes is fried. When i start it up, it seems fine but then will not load windows. When it goes through the attempts to repair automatically, it says it cannot repair. Hi I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this nbsp But anyways I basically dropped my HP Notebook -f Fail? DST Check Drive Short Hard dx and now it won't boot Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail? When I turn it on it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank black screen and after a long while a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again then it goes back to the black screen and the same error I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check I don't know what any of this means do I need a new laptop nbsp

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hey all I'm technologically challenged and this is my first time posting on the forum so lemme know if I miss anything....Like the subject says my notebook was freezing and running slowly I didn't know what was happening but long story short I can't get past the boot up screen anymore with HP logo and I ran diagnostic and got hard drive short and long dst failed. I'm pretty frustrated cause my laptop is less than 2 yrs old and my warranty expired how can I replace the damaged hard drive and what exactly should I buy? Also will my files be lost?

A:Hard drive long and short dst fail

A retail laptop/mobile 2.5" SATA hard drive can be used.Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Sorry to say files also die with a hard drive. Best practice with any computer is an external USB hard drive to back up files.

I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try using ubuntu
------------------------------------------------------------------------

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

If you have another PC with a DVDwriter and spare DVD
Download the ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

UBUNTU version 14 http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/
For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386.iso

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

A tutorial is here BUT this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC ? remember where you saved it ? so you can find it again to create the image bootable DVD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a DVD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable DVD
The DVD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO

If not - use this free program http://www.imgburn.com/ - Choose the option Write image file to disc
Be very careful when installing , as imgburn now includes and installs a load of unwanted programs, so make sure you read each page during the installation and decline them ALL
OR
you can use this stand alone ISO Burner to burn the ubuntu onto DVD ftp://terabyteunlimited.com/burncdcc.zip

If you need any help burning these images to disk, see the Image Burning Guide, from the ubuntu website.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

When the UBUNTU DVD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

== > Try ubuntu
== > Install ubuntu
You can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer, directly from this DVD

Use "Try ubunto" ONLY. This option will run from the DVD and "will not" install onto your harddrive
Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"
Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.
full details are here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

If you press the F6 key, a menu at the bottom will open allowing you to set kernel options with the space bar or enter key. You can close the menu with escape key and resume booting by selecting the option ?try ubuntu without installing? (please note that session does allow you to install ubuntu once you found the kernel options cured your problem).Click to expand...

If everything worked OK and you should be on the ubuntu desktop

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

A:Hard drive short DST TEST FAILED

Hi,            The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.

A:Hard disk Short DST test failed

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with your description of the issue. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

A:Passed smart check but failed short DST hardware diagnostic

Did you do the extensive Test? If so, and you got the same response: Failed. I'm afraid, you might need a new Hard Drive. If your PC is under warranty, call HP Support, they will fix it, but you will have to send it to them.  If out of warranty, you will have to purchase a Hard Drive and replace it or have someone install it for you, like a computer technician. Hope I've been of some help, I'm not a computer expert,  but the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. HP Supporters are wonderful here. From what I've learned on here, I am just trying to help out another.  Hope it works out for you.

This is an attempt at understanding what makes a power supply wake up.

I believe that you have to short a couple pins in order to make this happen.
Anyone know what pins to short?
Or am I on the wrong track?
I have a Power Supply checker that causes the PS to come to life when it is plugged into the molex connector. However, i am curious if, in the absence of this tester, if I could check the PS with a multimeter.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

My chassis has some quality problem but I cannot afford to buy a new one at the moment. Especially the hard drive part, the mounting part of the hard drive is very unusual. Sometimes the computer could give unknown strange noise, it still works perfectly, though.

So I test the HDD

I tested the HDD by CrystalDiskInfo. This is the result. I only know it's "Good", but I don't know if the temperature is alright and what those values mean. I've captured the screen. Could anyone help see if it's good. Thanks

A:SMART Test result

That temperature is fine......the noise you are hearing is probably the disk mount rattling against the chassis/screws. Its nothing to be concerned about unless its extremely loose, and the HDD is physically moving a lot.

Hello! I bought a new hdd drive and it has values of reallocated sector count and uncorrectable sector count both 252. As far as I understand they should be 0. What does it mean?

A:smart test issue

These are usually signs of a potential failure of the hard disk. Are there any obvious signs that the disk is having issues (clicking noises, unresponsive system, constant disk light activity)? Ensure you make regular backups, and consider replacing this disk.

Quote:
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks that sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and reallocated sectors are called "remaps". The raw value normally represents a count of the bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate. This allows a drive with bad sectors to continue operation; however, a drive which has had any reallocations at all is significantly more likely to fail in the near future.[2] While primarily used as a metric of the life expectancy of the drive, this number also affects performance. As the count of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to become worse because the drive head is forced to seek to the reserved area whenever a remap is accessed. If sequential access speed is critical, the remapped sectors can be manually marked as bad blocks in the file system in order to prevent their use.

Quote:
The total count of uncorrectable errors when reading/writing a sector. A rise in the value of this attribute indicates defects of the disk surface and/or problems in the mechanical subsystem.

A:Smart test Failure on HD. What do these results mean?

A smart failure tends to mean ...well failure is pretty imminent you probably should backup data now while it's still booting. It could hold out for as long as a year in that state, or it could die completely tomorrow.
From my own experience that's pretty much it.
A SMART failure always means some key component in the drive is on it's way out.

Hi jayleon98, and welcome to TSG.

S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring And Reporting Technology) is hardware inside of a hard drives that reports the drive's internal physical condition to the host computer. I would backup any important documents and files off of the drive ASAP if I were you. There is a good chance that your hard drive is near failure and permanent loss or non-recoverable corruption of its contents. The drive may work fine for months or it may fail the next time you power up the computer or try to save a file to it..

I think you need root OS admin for that raw test to run from within windows.
I could be mistaken.
I don't think this is an indication that your disk is bad but rather a failure of the test to run properly.

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

hi, the 'dst' means drive short test, so a problem is showing on your hard drive. You may want to consider running the longer test offered in the diagnostics section on your hard drive, but of course running tests on a failing drive has a risk attached. Do you have all your files backed up? If not, do you have another computer available, you could slave the drive to it in order to try to get your files off. Or, Can you get in to safe mode on your inspiron, as you start the notebook press the F8 key up and down to get to the safe mode menu. If you can do this back up your files before running the extended test.

A:Memory Test Fail!!! Help

samm1, Welcome to the forums.

First thing I would do is to get memtest86+ http://www.memtest.org/#downcode
get the .iso file, burn the image to a CD, boot from the CD let memtest run.

If you have more than one stick of RAM, It is best to run memtest on one stick of RAM at a time, so you may have to shutdown your laptop, and remove one stick.

this post regards a dell inspiron 510m. it has recently been crashing, and when I try to re-boot I get the message that the config.sys file is missing or corrupt. I tried booting up using the XP installation disk, but to no avail. I then booted up using the diagnostics option, but part way through the process it crashed again. I repeated the exercise but this time used the symptom tree to individually test each of the headings under the 'cannot boot OS' option. everything passed except the March A test. the system crashed to a blank screen halfway through. any idea what this means? all help much appreciated.

A:March A test fail

Are you able to boot the computer up to the desktop at all? Normal mode? Safe mode? Last good known configuration?

happy thanksgiving everyone!!
problem-
my gateway w/ western digital 80gb winxp home, doesnt want to start up anymore. it powers up and goes through the process and stops in iots trax with
PXE-E61 media test fail check cable
PXE-MOF PEE ROM boot failure system halted

i did a search here and found nothing. did a google search and came up with a few things to look at. ive changed the ide cables, swapped out with another HD that is good. nothing solved the issue. i saw that it may be looking to boot from the network card so i pressed F1 to get into setup and changed the boot order to cd then removable media, but didnt see anything to disable network card.
anyone have any suggetiosns or any other help? thanks!

Reference: http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:BlNg_...;cd=5&gl=usNow, my take on this is...the first message tells me that a cable is bad on a device which the system is trying to boot from, while the 2d message indicates that there is something wrong in the BIOS.Since I know that BIOS problems can create other system problems, I would check the BIOS first for: correct time and date, proper recognition of drives (to included CD/DVD), and boot order. A failing CMOS battery will result in strange things happening with a system, including inability to boot.CMOS Battery. - http://www.geocities.com/micksmix2000/cmosbatt.html Ignore that bit about a "next day" check of the time.If you cannot get into the BIOS, then I suggest forcing the BIOS to revert to default settings. This can be done by shorting the motherboard jumper for CMOS settings or it can be done by removing the CR2032 battery from the system. In your BIOS, you should have the standard boot options (HD, network, CD, etc.). IMO, set the 1st option to boot from IDE-0, which should be your hard drive with the O/S and your programs on it. 2d option s/b an optical drive. There is no reason to utilize the network option and it seems that XP goes to that one automatically whenever it cannot properly boot.If all checks out with the BIOS/CMOS, then it's probably time to try a Recovery Console command (fixboot).Louis

I'm helping a friend with a Dell Dimension 2350 1gig Ram Pentium 4. His XP was virus-riddled and hung horribly even after clean up with SysFiles repaired. HD cleared diagnostics, wiped HD, ran memtest86 which shut down test both times at 3% first pass.

Now in Win7 having similar problems with hangs, tried WMD test which also failed at 5%.

What is the cause of failure of memtest or WMD test to even run?

We are removing one RAM stick to try test on each stick and then use a good stick to test slots. Any other suggestions?

Update: First stick, first slot, WMD test stopped at 5%
Update: First stick second slot, WMD test stopped at 8%
Update: Stick 2 slot one, WMD test stops at 3%

A:When Memtest86 and WMD test fail?

Hey Greg - I just did a quick google search and read a some relevant posts and the majority of solutions offered suggest upping the voltage to the RAM to get Memtest to run.

Unfortunately some Dell BIOS's are pitiful when it comes to settings.

And if the PS is old it may not be supplying clean power to the MB (WAG).

When attempting to run diagnostic following step 2 of instructutions here, the test fails. As in, the test ITSELF fails to produce any results. Even checking the logs all logs show cancelled tests. There are no results. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Hi, I have just bought the first Lenovo Laptops and after run a test, there is a warning sign from the SMART Drive self test. What is this mean? The hard drive having problem?

A:"Warning" for SMART drive self test (model 700 ser...

Hi Vickles ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology; often written as SMART) is a monitoring system included in computer hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs)[1] that detects and reports on various indicators of drive reliability, with the intent of enabling the anticipation of hardware failures.

You may consider calling back the reseller as it is an integrity failure that may be bound to happen in the near future specially if you have freezing issue / BSOD /slow performance and worst as clicking noise.

Was wondering what brand of harddrive you have as this may happen to any OEM systems . But good that you're able to run diagnostics for over check up, likewise you may also verify its finding by using other similar test like this and this .

You may call in tech support for repair options too.

Hope this answered your query.
Update us how things go for you best.
