Preferred Solution: Should I upgrade my BIOS?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Should I upgrade my BIOS?

The BIOS should not be updated unless the update addresses a specific problem you are having. If the update fails, which can happen even if you do everything right, your system may be unbootable. Recovery from that often requires physical replacement of the BIOS chip.

A:got the windows 10 free upgrade and used the dell diagnostics tool to upgrade driver and bios everything worked fine until the update of the bios!!!!

I called dell they told me in not so many words my motherboard was Fried and they would not replace it.

Dell just saying it's a "possibility" the motherboard might need to be replace. No one can tell you that motherboard is definite "Fried" without first looking at the system.
What is the system model number and version of windows before upgrading to windows 10? Example: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
You're able to boot into BIOS(F2 key) and diagnostic (F12 key) ?
1. Power off computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping F2 key ( BIOS) or F12 key( BIOS) continuously

Computer failed during upgrade of bios. I have followed all the steps to recover bios: taken out battery, pressed windows + B + power, restore screen appears. Computer goes thru bios restore process and verification. When it gets to the 'count down to windows start up' and 'continue to restart button', the computer freezes and does not restart. I have pressed the continue button, nothing. I have let the count down continue and it stops at 1 then nothing.

I have posted a few questions regarding getting samsung 950 pro (NVME M.2 ssd) to be recognized quickly on boot by ENVY 750-170SE cto rom family id #2b4b and it hasn't been resolved.  I am pretty sure that HP will need to create a newer bios than the a.08 version that i have or the lower versioned number a.07 which is available from HP's website (even though it has a newer date than a.08 (this is really strange))  -  How do i go about getting HP to release a beta or final bios that shortens my boot time by 3 minutes?  Am i posting in the wrong area, if so where do i post?  I am not alone with this problem.  see SpearfishX post #21 - and i am unable to post in this forum, it needs to be reopened and addressed -

A:Bios Upgrade on HP Envy 750-170se CTO bios family 2b4b

@FrozenGamer? If your PC takes 3 minutes to boot in a factory condition then you should contact HP support. If your PC is less than 21 days old then quickly return it.  Without any modifications, your PC should be booting up in less than 30 seconds. I haven't seen any official HP posted information that supports NVMe m.2 SSDs.  Run the HP Support Assistant and see if it picks up a later BIOS update. HP's support number is 800-474-6836 or 800-HPINVENT or online here.

I updated the bios after I had notified from Toshiba about the Bios v3.50. The process was done by the Toshiba Utility software, and after the reboot there is "Password =" on a blank screen and it not recognise my BIOS password, writing "Not certified".

I have also tried the HDD password but no luck.

What can I do now?

A:Satellite Z30-A-12R BIOS password not recognised after BIOS upgrade

Before trying to update the BIOS, all passwords should be removed!
BIOS password can be removed by authorized service provider available in your country.

But the unknown HDD password cannot be removed anymore.
In such case the HDD isn?t accessible and cannot be used.

Sorry mate but in my opinion you have only one chance to get the BIOS password removed; you need the ASP assistance.

A:Dell Inspiron 518 BIOS v1.0.7 64 Bit Vista DO NOT UPGRADE BIOS

No it happened to me too.  Dell is replacing the motherboard under warranty but I was told somewhat firmly not to update the BIOS unless advised by a technican.  In my defense the BIOS update was listed as "recommended" under the download section for this unit on the Dell support website.
I would recommend to avoid two phone calls (over 40 minutes each) to tech support and several days waiting for a new motherboard, not to update the BIOS at this time.
Thankfully it is being covered under warranty.

Dear All I have a question regarding BIOS upgrades as well as downgrades First about downgrading BIOS is it a safe thing to do If not then what makes it not safe I have Dell Inspiron M with the latest BIOS A Not happy with this one due to high pitch sounds coming from of upgrade down know BIOS Is safe? do downgrading if How of BIOS successful is or you the top right hand corner of the laptop It s been suggested that I downgrade only a couple of revisions back namely to either A or A However Ive been getting conflicting reports about the Is downgrading of BIOS safe? How do you know if down or upgrade of BIOS is successful safety of downgrading from Dell Tech Support Some say that it s not done at all others say that as long as it s only to downgrade back to a couple of previous versions then risks are not as high as going all the way back to a really early version such as A etc The risks I m told is in the performance Is downgrading of BIOS safe? How do you know if down or upgrade of BIOS is successful of hard disks Apparently if you downgrade to a really early version such as A then problems will arise though I m not sure what the exact problems are Moreover there are those who say that there is no procedure for downgrading Is downgrading of BIOS safe? How do you know if down or upgrade of BIOS is successful and that it is never suggested to anyone to downgrade their BIOS The notion that it becomes riskier as you downgrade back to a really early version of BIOS such as A baffles me because in my case prior to doing any kind of updating for BIOS on my laptop I had version A and have not had any kind of improvements enhancements done to my computer whatsoever in other words my computer is the same as when I got it last year in terms of hardware In terms of software I have not changed my OS of Windows XP home edition with SP I only added iTunes Firefox Thunderbird plus software for a corded keyboard Therefore the claim that reverting to a really early version of BIOS such as A would pose a greater risk than reverting back to A or A does not make sense for my computer worked fine with A and I have not changed any of my hardware My reason for upgrading is because Dell Support software popped up in the bottom right hand corner saying I needed to upgrade my BIOS to A so I did that then discovered after that there was a critical update of A which I installed as well and which I have currently Another question I have is this how do you know for sure that an upgrade or downgrade was successful Although I have yet to do any downgrading when I updated my BIOS to A then to A the download for these two files went fine I did not get any error messages Even after I flashed the BIOS with A and A I got a message saying that the update was successful However is it possible that even with a message saying that an update was successful that there may be some glitch and that the BIOS was NOT updated properly I ask such a question because ever since upgrading to A I ve been getting a high pitched sound from the top right hand corner of my laptop The noise is not consistent in a sense that it was always present just after updating to A but now it is only present when I first power the computer on after it s been shut off completely and when I put into Standby then come out of it the noise always disappears Thank you for your time and any help you can provide me with Sincerely Lavender PS I would also like to add that with all the Tech Support I spoke to at Dell except for one guy they were all very hesitant if not down right against downgrading What makes downgrading so dangerous risky As I understand it upgrading or downgrading BIOS is about erasing the previous version of BIOS and installing another version If that is the case then the process for downgrading and upgrading would be the same for flash BIOS would it not If so why is upgrading OK to do but downgrading is something not done and is considered quot forced quot Isn t upgrading quot forced... hi there, i am fixing a friends old computer and the hdd was stuffed so i got a new maxtor diamondmax 9 for it. although once installing it i found out that it would only run in udma2 mode (checked it in another computer and it ran at full udma6)
so i suspect that the current bios cannot support udma5 or 6, so i am looking for a bios upgrade for it.
the bios string is 6A69RPRDC-00, the number on the actual motherboard is 35-C960-00-05
thanks for any help, i am really hoping i can make this board work at udma5 at least and not have to settle for udma2.
thanks again

ps. i just found this

A:help with updating bios. cannot find bios upgrade - 6A69RPRDC-00

Old Machines.....(just like me... but can still perform to the max lol)

I your Bios has the option of udma up to 6 then generally the bios supports the Mode! and your problem is that the HDD does not support the mode (cant remember if you said it does).

You are probably using wrong criteria for bios upgrade search.
Try WWW.driverguide,com

You Need the MB's Manufacturers Name or at least the MB Chipset and bios Manufacturers Name as well. go to the Computers muanufacturers website (you probably done that already) and search model.

otherwise Download a System info utility from Tech Spot, I use SiSoft Sandra or AIDA32.. (sandra might cause bluescreen on older machines).. Aida problably will have link direct to bios update site. hope this was of some help

A:Windows 8 to 8.1 Upgrade failed - must upgrade System BIOS

Store upgrade is more hassle than it's worth...Can't see how bios version can prevent the upgrade...

If you can download a full ISO - try that rather.

Go to and download the excellent and free Everest Home which, when run, will give you the complete and utter rundown on what is in your computer including, if available the web address from which to download a BIOS update. It shouldn't, however, be necessary to update BIOS just to add a larger hard disk.

Guessing from your processor that you're probably running '98, you'll need to run fdisk from your boot up floppy to partition the new drive and format it to store data. Post back with some more details and someone will be able to guidde you through.

Just got a 1000mhz slot a thunderbird for my computer, I looked through the manual and made sure that the cpu was compatible with the board (or so i thought). It turns out that the manual that shipped with the board from ebay was for the Asus K7V-T and the board itself was a K7V. I then found out online the K7V only supports the Athlon and Athlon classic CPUs. My question is that because the boards are almost identical, can I update the bios of my board with the latest bios for the K7V-T, and if so will this enable support for the CPU? Thanks, Ryan

A:Bios upgrade?

I don't think that the BIOS is the only factor determining support for the other mentioned CPUs. I would say that NO, you couldn't update the BIOS to make your chip compatible but I could be wrong. I couldn't find too much info pertaining to the differences in the two boards.

Unless you are having some problem, don't flash the BIOS. If your Dell doesn't recognize all the memory, you might have to. As long as you installed the recommended memory, you shouldn't have a problem.

It would help to know which ECS MB and try going to ECS website and look for downloads/BIOS for your board. Even a simple change in revision number of the motherboard may require a different BIOS to be installed.

A:Bios Upgrade??? Yes or No? How?

Do you have any problems that a BIOS upgrade will cure? If the answer is no, so is my answer to your question. You should only do a BIOS upgrade if you are addressing a specific issue, since a bad FLASH can leave you with a doorstop for a computer.

A:bios upgrade

I don't know but I do know that an HP by design isn't designed for overclocking or upgrading. Not only is the BIOS severely lacking but the components are sub standard when it comes to this area. You would need to upgrade your cooling for the CPU and case, and case cooling is sometimes hard to do with an HP case. The RAM might also not be able to cope with running at a higher frequency even if the CPU can.

Will the eSupport BIOS reveal hidden settings is something I don't know.

There is a fairly new BIOS from September, 2015 which would likely be an update for you: Download this and run it from within Windows. Don't be running any other programs. Make sure it is plugged in to AC power and has a fully charged battery. Don't expect miracles on the video. It is actually doubtful this will make a difference but the BIOS update is part of ordinary maintenance so it cannot hurt to do it. You may find that the HP software on the laptop has already performed this update and if so the BIOS program will tell you that you already have this BIOS and refuse to go further.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I've run across posts on BIOS upgrades to fix various hardware knocks; my question: Must I have a particular problem in order to benefit from such a process or is the old saw 'if it ain't broke...' in effect? (Whatever the viewpoint, I understand this isn't something a novice should toy with.)

My BIOS version is A09 on Dell Latitude 5510 laptop.
I tried to install the last version - A16, but first i need to flash on A10. When i download and open A10 the program closed and send message: "E5510A10.exe stopped working" so i can't install new BIOS. If you guys can tell me how to fix this file problem will be nice.

A:I can't upgrade BIOS - Help !

I had this issue in the past as well. What I did was download a tool that allowed me to create a bootable usb (dos). I had the E55A10.exe on the root of the usb stick so I can update the bios from DOS. Worked like a champ.
The tool was call NautilusA41_ZPE.exe. It is on the dell site somewhere.

Normally you would go to your mobo manufacturers website and get the bios update from there.

Why do you want to upgrade your bios? Unless there is a specific reason, you should leave it as it is.

A:Cpu and Bios Upgrade

I went ahead and flashed the bios myself. The intel bios took considering this was an intel manufactured board in the first place. With the bios upgraded I can now go ahead and drop the new processor and everything will work fine.

Note to viewers: Always make sure a processor is compatible with your board before installing it.The board must have already installed the appropiate bios.If you have an oem system like emachines or any other
namebrand make sure you either have the appropiate oem bios for the new processor...In my case emachines was not willing to help *** me in this process saying putting new bios on my computer would ruin the board...with being able to upgrade the bios and processor you no longer need the company so there not quick to assist.Considering bios upgrades to the board from the manufatcurer of the board is risky,
if the oem alters the board in certain ways the bios may not take which
can ruin your before installing new bios be sure to create a bios recovery disc or floppy and make sure your familiar with the syntax that will need to be reentered if you get the blue screen of death. In my case my board was an intel d945gccr intel purchased from gateway.
On the board the new number was d945gccrg1.Only the g and the 1 were different which ws on the sticker on the board not on the actual board.I was able to locate the most recent bios for the board by visiting intel. The first two letters of the bios gave me the courage to upgrade the bios. The bios on emachines Gateway was cr****** and so on
the bios on intel were cr****** and so on so i took a shot and succeeded now when my computer starts it says intel and the processor im upgrading to is the highest for my board. When i drop the processor ill reply back to show how it went.

While doing the upgrade it told me to save the current config to the floppy incase something went wrong and it is saved on the floppy but I cant get it to get to the point when it can read the floppy. When I turn it on the num lock, caps lock, and scroll lock lights all come on and stay on. Im sure that all 3 light staying on at the same time is trying to tell me what the problem is. Maybe I have to type something in. All of those lights are lock lights so maybe its trying to tell me its locked. Any help would be great. A:No Bios after upgrade.

you did an improper flash. You will either need to send your motherboard to the manufactuer to reprogram the BIOS, or use a backup chip if your motherboard has one.

In either case, you either A: used the wrong BIOS update
B: Did not let the BIOS update complete completely

Thus your motherboard is a paperweight as its brains have been erased.

I have an old advent 7007 laptop which I hope my daughter can use for school. The problem is that it needs a BIOS. I have not been able to find one anywhere with it being such a dated unit. Techguys recommended buying a new laptop or registering for a warranty. DSG haven't stopped laughing yet.

The BIOS says it is an AMIBIOS but apparently the motherboard is not a genuine AMI board. (A Dixons special i think)

The tech data is

A:Upgrade BIOS

Firstly, unless there is a hardware issue that requires an upgrade, and for which the manufacturer has identified and issued a fix for that particular issue, it will not deliver any benefit.

The failure rate of BIOS flashes is several %, and in your case would economically destroy the motherboard. I would only do it to address a known issue that actually affected me. It's not a recreational activity.

Any update would be on the HP site, as they acquired Compaq.

You probably will have to update your BIOS.

Then extract it to a floppy disk, boot the computer to the floppy and follow the instructions on the screen...Make sure it is the right version or you could ruin your bios.

RGalvin, welcome to the forum. There is no BIOS update available for your motherboard.  Your best option would be to do a full System Recovery to see if that solves your problem. Another possibility is a failing power supply unit (PSU).  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot it.  The problems that you describe can be caused by a lack of power from the PSU. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

A:Bios upgrade

First, be sure you have a Windows XP Service Pack 2 install, as anything less will be trouble. Windows XP with no Service Pack will NOT allow changes in hard drive size. Windows XP with Service Pack 1 is unreliable.
Is this FoxConn a motherboard independent of any manufacturer?
Dell, HP, and Compaq use some Foxconn boards. If it is in a computer sold under a brand name, the BIOS update will likely be on the website of the computer manufacturer.
Then go here:
The FoxConn 761GXK8MB-RS or KRS should work.
YOU WILL NEED TO FLASH THE BIOS FROM A FLOPPY DRIVE DISK, IN MY EXPERIENCE. So if you do not have one, install one... even a used one... most repair shops will sell you one for $5.00.
If you have doubts, call FoxConn tech support, as ALL BIOS UPDATES ARE RISKY.
That is a pretty new board, and the lastest BIOS was issued in January of 2008.

A:processor and bios upgrade

Seeing how your manufacturer is out of business, you may be out of luck. It'd probably be best to buy a new motherboard with the processor already on it.

So I bought a new CPU for my old G laptop I wanted to upgrade from the B it has right now it's the model The new CPU is a i - M as it's listed as a compatible part on both the downloadable PDF and the PartsLookup website I checked with my upgrade G580 no - BIOS CPU serial number as well nbsp I changed the CPU installed thermal paste everything but to no avail Won't even enter BIOS The on LED flashes for seconds then it shuts down Installed the old CPU again - it boots without problems New CPU again - no BIOS nothing I have updated my BIOS to the latest possible version version ECN WW V as the newer version shows a Error - TDK Library Initialization Failed nbsp I just don't know what to do anymore Could be a G580 CPU upgrade - no BIOS faulty CPU but I doubt it The only difference is that the old CPU is Sandy Bridge and the new is Ivy Bridge But it's shown as compatible with the laptop everywhere It's a shame really

I am upgrading my CPU from a dual core to a quad core. I am getting conflicting info from people. Some say upgrade BIOS some say no need to. I read some threads here and I'm getting more than a little nervous about messing with BIOS. I have an ASUS board and their web info leaves alot to be concerned about. Like no help what so ever. According to the spec on the board it will use X2, X3 and X4 processors. Should I prepare for doom and gloom or crack a beer and relax?

A:BIOS - CPU Upgrade OK, now I'm nervous

If your current BIOS supports (your particular) 4x core, go ahead and install the new CPU. Examine the update history of any more current BIOS versions. If none of the changes apply to your system, no need to flash.

Hello All You Brilliant Brainiacs. My son is a budding brainiac and he's driving me bananas with his half knowledge. He installed a 40g hard drive into our computer and it refuses to recognize it. I can't do much on the computer since it keeps telling me it's low on disk space. Even simple printing is asking it too much.
So after reading on the forums a bit I realized perhaps we need a bios upgrade. My computer is a Pentium II.
We have no sound now, and for 3 days the colors were all goofy. We're fixing one problem at a time, but I'm wondering about what I need to do to get the pc to recognize the HDD we just installed. THank you!!!!!!!!!

I have a G50-45 with AMD A6-6310 APU with AMD Radeon R4 Graphics.  The original BIOS is A2CN25WW(v1.07).  When I checked for a BIOS upgrade to improve my Win10 experience, the site shows the latest BIOS is A2CN38WW(v2.06), but the list of previous versions skips over my original BIOS.  That is, A2CN24WW(v1.06) and A2CN26WW(v1.08) are shown in the list.  Will this upgrade work OK for my computer?

I own a Impossible Upgrade The Bios IBM Thinkpad CX -HPE and the BIOS needs to be upgraded to support Plug and Play for Win I have been running Win but am having major grief with installing a PCMCIA MODEM and disabling the Mwave modem MWave - gggrrrrrrrr I do not have a working battery for my laptop The BIOS upgrade checks for a battery and refuses The Impossible Bios Upgrade to install the bios without one in case of power failure The Impossible Bios Upgrade I really don t want to buy a battery so I could FAKE OUT the battery check by routing power from somewhere to the battery posts Doesn t sound nice Edit the BIOS install disk to not check for a battery Sounds real bad Try and get the modem to work without PnP I m having trouble configuring everything to get a dial tone The diagnostic software I have checks for and finds the modem just fine But no dialtone It seems that Mwave doesn t want to share the phone jack even if the Mwave modem is disabled or removed from Device Mangler Suggestions other than skip the whole idea Please nbsp

A:The Impossible Bios Upgrade

What do you mean by "share the jack"?

You aren't plugging the phone line into both modems, are you?

Generally speaking, a "no dialtone" reaction means one of 3 things.

1) Modem is not compatible with your machine. Many WinModems require a Pentium 166 or faster to work correctly,, for instance.

2) Drives are not installed correctly. This sounds very likely in your case, due to the PnP problems.

3) The modem is bad. I've seens dozens of modems that diagnose fine, but can't get a dial tone. The physical jack portion of the modem won't work, even though the internal parts are ok. Any chance you can test the modem in another machine to make sure it works?

A:BIOS Upgrade Problem

Bob C.,
Welcome to TSG.
If you browse thru your CMOS setup utility (bios) do you see any speed settings for your DIMM ports? If you do page down to change the speed and give each setting a try. If it doesn't work you can reset to default.

I am the owner of Tecra 540.
Full details:
Tecra 540CDT/4.0 SYSTEM UNIT; Model No. Z7013615.

I have just downloaded the newest BIOS for that laptop (

Two files inside:

Now I am looking for a way to flash BIOS. This machine does not have floppy drive but CD-ROM.
I was looking at Toshiba site where "how-to" for upgrading BIOS is described for any of Toshiba laptops but not my :( IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

Can anyone please let me know what steps do I need to upgrade the newest BIOS ?

A:Tecra 540 - BIOS upgrade ?

On the Toshiba driver page in the Tecra 540 section you can find two BIOS packages.
The one package BIOS 8.00-TRAD contains an BIOS Tecra 540 exe file and some pdf documents which describes how to update the BIOS.

Furthermore the Toshiba FAQ document +?How do I update the BIOS on my Toshiba Notebook and where can I get the latest BIOS for my machine??+ provides a step by step instruction.

Please check the last point *?BIOS Upgrade Procedure 7?*

It says:
For all models except those listed in procedures (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6)
So if your model was not listed in the early procedures then you will have to use the last ?Procedure 7?
