I don't see a Policies tab in hardware properties for any drives

Q: I don't see a Policies tab in hardware properties for any drives

We recently got a new Dell desktop with Windows 7 and I discovered today there's no Policies tab in the hardware properties dialog for any of the drives, local or removable. In XP and Vista the path is, Right-click a drive>Properties>Hardware>Properties>Policies. Should it be there or does 7 have a different way of handling it? I'm logged in as administrator and have ownership of one of the removable drives I've been working on. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't see that tab in Windows 8 either, if that helps.

From yesterday I am facing a strange problem : I am getting a error whenever taking "Properties" of any drive. Right Click to any drive -> properties.

It's showing "The properties for this item are not available".

Please advise.

A:Error getting properties of drives

Did you do anything significant just before this happened (downloaded Win Updates, updated drivers, etc)?
Is your system running normally otherwise?
Have you tried running a full malware scan just to make sure you are clean?

We haven't loaded anything, it just appeared: PCI bus 26, device 4, function 0There are two of them (both the same) under Other devices in the control panel. Computer wants to find and download drivers for them. Is this potentially harmful? Could it be spyware/malware? We have young children that like to play games on the computer.

Have you changed some hardware of the computer yourself, or is it only shown in the device manager out of the blue?

I have aquired a HP Laptop that the Ethernet appears to be defective. It shows up as This Device Cannot Start (Code 10). I did a complete reinstall because it was using Windows 7 (was purchased by the owner) and I figured it was a driver issue. The original (and now current) OS is Windows Vista and the same thing shows.

I was looking in the properties of the Ethernet card for the vendor ID to make sure I got the correct driver (website has different make drivers) and saw there was a listing that says Problem Code with a value of 000000A -- I was wondering if this is the same like a STOP code or if there is a website with these codes? I have a screenshot of an example.

I'm pretty sure the Ethernet card is toast, I just wanted to make sure.

A:Error code listed in hardware properties

pretty sure that the problem code 00000016 represents some driver issue, but that's going of a total of three instances, so consider that......

starting to agree that the card is cooked, however.

I am attempting to swap out a cd-rom from my d: drive and replace it with a combo dvd-rw/cd/rw - The cd-rom is currently in the secondary master position which is where I want the new hardward to end up. What all do I have to disable and change over in windows 98SE to accomplish this? Also, on the back of the dvd-rw there is an audio chord slot, a master/slave cable slot, and the power cable slot, but also two small slots (one 4 pronged, and one two pronged for chord/cable attachments. Can anybody tell me what the other two are for? Thank you very much!

My desktop PC died after an accident a couple of months ago and I have very nearly finished building a new one, however, I want to retrieve what data I can off the 4 hard drives.

I had a dual boot setup with XP and 7 Pro 64 bit running and wanted to know whether I would be able to get them running in an entirely new PC at least long enough that I can remove anything of importance.

Or if anyone know a way to access data from user accounts on them without running both the versions of Windows installed on them that would also do.

A:Updated all hardware apart from hard drives

What I normally do is I will pull the hard drives out, and my primary windows hard drive(the one i do everything on) will be set as boot in the BIOS, and windows should read the rest of the harddrives as regular space and you should still have access to all of your files just by going to My computer.

Hope this helps.

Hey people I just reinstalled vista and the only difference to my machine is a 8600GTS graphics card (used to be a 7800GT) but this time around for some unknown reason I can see all my drives in the safetely remove hardware list (I dont want them in there).

They were not showing before (previous installs) and I also notice that the windows update has a history that is telling me that the nvidia raid updates have failed and if I try them again it fails repeatedly.

So how do I go about making sure my drivers are all correct and removing the raid config and my other drives from the above mentioned list (picture attached below) ? ? ?

Hi guys,

After a fresh format of windows XP (with SP2) i noticed this and it concerns me...

How on earth is it safe for me to remove the hard-drive my OS is installed on alone the rest of them??

Also, whenever i right-click on a folder's properties for some reason all the folders on all the drives have "write protection" enabled, even if i disable it, once i click on "OK" and then go back into the folders properties write protection is enabled again....
Any help would be great, cheers guys!

A:SATA drives appearing in Safely Remove Hardware tab?

The "Safely remove" came in with one of the M/S updates . . nothing to worry about, and nothing you can do about it either.

No clue about the write protection . . can you access files on the drives?

I have two Dell Optiplex computers:
GX260 1.8 Ghz, 512 MB ram, XP Pro, 2nd large HD, video and TV card and Wifi.
GX280 2.8 Ghx, 1024 MB ram, XP Pro and pretty stock.....

I want to take the two hard drives (one boot one 2nd), video, TV and WiFi cards from the GX260 and swap it into the faster GX280 machine. Both these machines have XP product codes on the case from Dell and both are up and running.

CAN I DO THIS, with out grief. I know I can strip the GX260 and remove the hardware (except the boot drive), re-install them all in the other machine, then load programs and drivers..... Yuck!

If you think it's a bad idea tell me if you have a game plan for doing the swap in an orderly way.

Currently only my SSD is inside, but I will put the HDD too, and when I do the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media' thing in the dock also shows the HDD. Why does it do that? can I make it show me only the external stuff (such as a USB)?

I already accidentaly clicked on my HDD when it was inside, but luckily it didnt do anything and just showed a message that it cannot eject it because it because it is in use.
But still, I wish not to see those.

Have you tried looking in your BIOS? Many bioses have an option to mark SATA drives as "Hot Swappable". Make sure it's disabled, and you won't have the option.

A:Problems booting windows after major hardware change (IDE drives not recognized)

you must reinstall windows on the new setup from scratch. Any major hardware changes will require this. Windows configures itself and is registered to the mobo and components. Also windows is licensed for only one system at a time.

A BIOS beep is indicative of hardware failure or incompatibility. Read my guide here:

To retrieve data you will need to use your drive in another system as an external device. Use a usb to IDE adapter.

hi all-

i have somewhat of an annoying problem that i was hoping the experts out there can help me with. i have a sandisk cruzer mini usb device (512mb) that i have been using for about a year without difficulty, and unfortunately my computer no longer brings it up as a drive (along with my hard disk) when it is plugged in, even though it plugs and plays fine on another computer and on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the lower right hand corner it is said to be working properly. i think this is probably some software issue as my computer is also not able to recognize a second usb drive.

i am running windows xp2 and had recently reinstalled secondary to other problems....but this was an unexpected gift, if you will

many thanks in advance for your help!

Hi I have a folder of home videos that I 6.41Gb says says folder 2.67Gb, properties properties *.* back up to a USB key with Syncback The key is nearly full and I'm trying to reduce the size of that folder But here's the thing If I folder properties says 2.67Gb, *.* properties says 6.41Gb right-click on my 'Home videos' folder and select 'Properties' it tells me I have files in folders taking Gb However if I open the folder and search for to show all the files then select all right-click 'Properties' it tells me I have files in folders taking Gb Still at the bottom of the Windows Explorer window it says items selected This is the case on both the folder in My Documents on the PC and also the matching folder on the USB key Treesize also shows Gb for both folders In fact as far as I can figure what with everything else on the same USB key there wouldn't even be room for a Gb folder I've tried showing both hidden and system files and folders but there's nothing extra to see Can anyone please explain this anomaly I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure it out

Does windows XP Home come with the policies function, or is it something that is added on? I looked, and I couldn't find it in the help menu, or in the regedit tool. The only time its even mention is in the context of "you must be logged on as an administrator, and have no network policies set to do this" (referring to something entirely different).

To be honest i am using windows 7. but this issue is more of a vista than a win 7 specific.

Anyway, i am running as a standard user so anytime i want to run something that is Admin level. it should prompt me to enter a Username and Password of my admin account. but i might have did something on my standard account that instead of giving me the UAC prompt it gives me a error stating that i am not included in the group policies. is there a way to bring back UAC on my standard account?

A:Group Policies

Enter GPEDIT.MSC in the search area of start menu to access group policy editor. Then check to see UAC is enabled as per attachment:

This works in Vista. Windows 7 is beta (may or may not work).

I added some local policies to a local machine to prevent users from doing some things. Ie; run command, display, clock.

However, its also affected my admin side as well. Is there a way to have the policies jsut enforced to the specified user or group? I know about group policies, but i have not done them locally on 1 machine, to affect one user. I've only done them via domain structure.

Would i basically create a group on the local machine, add the user, and apply the policies to that group? If so, from where do i apply these settings to a group?

I have setup an OU group policy and placed the users and the computers i want this policy applied to in this group...
I have also ticked the box block inheritance....still no joy

I have AD and DNS running , also NAT and DHCP

If i rember correctly i think i had the domain default policy working on the pc's as i deployed some software using that policy to them.

But surely this policy the OU one should be applied as well especially since it is meant to be overiding the default one.....

any help would be great.

1. Over-ride local users so they are subject to group policies even when not connected to the domain (ie log on with cached domain settings)
2. Transfer existing MyDocs etc for local users into new MyDocs that relate to new user account on domain

without having to do this manually on each laptop.

Any suggestions would be very welome.

1. If you use cached logins it should still use the domain policy when log in to the domain account when not on the network. Read this post about how to harden the security of this.: Your best bet is to extend the login script to move the files to the new my documents for the domain profile.

Hello Marian, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The easiest way to do this is to only have one user account (yours) on the computer, and create a strong password for it. This way they will not be able to log on to your user account at startup without knowing the password.

Hope this helps,

It looks to me there is a group policy under the the container/object your account is located.

Now it could be set as the domain group policy, or just under your container/object.

So they have exluded MMC from the c prompt and have disabled in IE the changing of IE settings.

They either need to move you to a container that does not inherit settings or to a container without the GPO.

You can check you local policies, if you can access the admin tools in control panel, but I do not remember being able to setup stuff like that as a local policy.

Hello all,

I was wondering if I could set up accounts to limit the users freedom to change system settings on one account and not the others. For example, you couldn't see the control panel in the "all" account, but you could in the "Admin" account. I know that you can download third party software, such as FreshUI, and you can impliment group policies, but I'm working with a couple of donated computers from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and they have the accounts set up exactly the way I want them, without any policies, or third party software. If it's a matter of getting into the security features, or registry, no problem, but I would like to learn how it is done.

I have a pc with Win 7 Pro RTM, with two user accounts.

The one account is for pc management and my Dad to use, so it needs everything enabled (account is an administrator).
The second account is for visitors to use, so I wish to disable many features in Windows to prevent people messing about with the machine (normal user account).

I've tried the group policy editor, but this works at a computer level, not at a user level as far as I can tell, and thus both accounts are affected.

Is there any sort of user level tool I can use like the group policy editor, to lock down the visitor account only?

Well first thing you do is create a standard user. then use parental controls to limit, then if you need modify policy edit to lock it down still further by limiting std user group

Hello,Now that you have posted a log, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Response Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. Please be patient. It may take several days, up to two weeks perhaps less, to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.

I am running XP Pro SP2 and IE7

I was trying to access a new security camera installation and it kept asking me for ActiveX permission. I kept saying 'install', but it still finally said that it would not install a program because the publisher could not be verified. I added to the trusted sites... but no change.

I edited the Group Policy and Security Policy, the IE-->Tools options

Now it tells me... "your security settings do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer..."

It also won't start MSN Messenger or MS Defender saying the services can't start because of security settings.

I've tried System Restore, but it didn't fix anything??

Is there anyway to reset everything?

A:Screwed Up Security Policies

Security systems use a lot of proprietary software and hardware. I've found that the best place to find fixes for these problems is at the system maker's website.

Just a thought - but did this start to occur after installing IE7? It could be a problem with the new "protected mode" that IE7 uses.

A:Explorer Policies. NoDesktop

Hello rlei1330,

We are currently having the same problem. We also have no desktop icons or background and we keep seeing an error message warning us of a hard drive failure. We are also running StopZilla and are experiencing the same warning of a hacker but cannot remove the virus we are then presented with an error message of ExplorerPolicies.NoDesktop.

We contacted the StopZilla live support and a repreentative took control of our computer and ran 'chkdsk c: /p/r' to try to retrieve the desktop, however we are still having the same problem. Currently we cant get through to StopZilla live chat again as we think that the virus is stopping the page geting through. If we manage to get through to StopZilla and manage to fix it we will let you know. :D

Hey there, I am currently in a Computer Technology course and I have a project requiring me to find Security Policies that have to do with Windows 7. I have searched the internet quite a bit and have come up with nothing. If someone could either acknowledge me or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Iam using windows server 2000 and managing users through active ISA Server 2000 as proxy server with DSL connection of internet...i want to use bandwidth policies for that users can utilize bandwidth that is assigned to them...
i want to make 2 or 3 bandwidth policies and want users to utilize only their assigned bandwidth...

Any help in this regard be appreciated.

A:Bandwidth Policies in ISA 2000

I would look here -

and look into bandwitdh use you can see ISA is more for blocking certain types of files downloaded or stopping people visiting sites. If you want bandwidth control that same link also shows a third party extension to the isa server called Bandwidth Splitter that seems to be more in tune with what you want to do.

I have a computer setup with local (NO DOMAIN) policies to enforce some rules, so that end users cant do certain things.

I would like to take those settings (done in gpedit.msc) and copy them and apply them to 2 other computers as well.

Does anyone know how to do so?
I know that MMC might be what i should look into, and i understand how to add the snap-in "Group Policy" and save all the settings. But then how do i get that imported on the next computer?
Any help would be great!!!

I would like to change the "Disk Drive Policies" (see attached screenshot).

If I check the box "Enable write caching on disk" and "Enable advanced performance" and then click ok and after that I reopen the "Policies" again evrything is like it was before I made the changes.

Is there anything I can do in order that the changes I make will be accepted and won't jump back to the previous settings?

Thanks in advance,

A:Disk Drive Policies ?

Some disks don't expose external controls for modifying their cache settings. Note the text there in your screenshot - "This device does not allow its write cache setting to be modified."

The fact that you're still offered a functional tickbox is likely a UI issue, but that's of little consequence.

I set up a Global Group Policy on our business Domain. I set the policy up to set the homepage, add trusted sites and custom level settings for IE. I used "User Configurations" in the Group Policy Editor, since this will apply to users.

Here is the problem: The problem happens when logging onto the domain. It seems that IF the the "Group Policy Editor" for this GPO is open, the settings will take effect at the user's login; however, if the "Group Policy Editor" is closed, the settings do NOT take effect when the user logs in. How weird is that? Do I have to keep the Group Policy Editor open on the screen the whole time for the policy to work???

I've looked at Microsoft's website, but I couldn't find anything specific on the issue (that is, if I ever find anything specific there).

This computer is stand-alone and has never been managed by any organization, so I am at a loss about what to do. Any help/ideas would be appreciated!

GPEDIT.MSC (Group Policy Editor) isn't available on XP Home Edition, partly because XP Home cannot join a domain by design. Although the took is designed to be used in an Enterprise environment running Active Directory, all it really does is making registry entries. So, the best alternative is to edit the registry using Regedit. Be aware that editing the registry incorrectly can make your system unbootable or cause other issues.

Policies are set in many locations throughout the system, in files, and primarily in the registry.

There is no Microsoft Management Console in Home Basic, and so no way to use the Group Policy snap-in. It cannot be installed or used with Home Basic.

I ran malewarebytes right away. It said a file was infected. A registry file ending with highjack proprieties. I read on a forum it was to be ignored. I clicked on ignore.

I opened malewarebytes today and clicked on the exclusion tab
It reads:

I did not put any file in the exclusions.
Do I have a virus doing things already?

XP Pro offers a lot of settings for its auditing security networking and other features I would have thought Microsoft and perhaps even more so various security web-sites policies Import of secure would publish exported settings that would make a system super-secure semi-secure etc In other words a few setups ranging from quot your-bank-pc quot to quot your-secure-gaming-pc quot kinds of setups So far I only was able to find such settings at http www auditmypc com ipsec-policy asp So one question is - do people know if this is a trust-worthy site siteadvisor com seems to suggest it is but more confirmation would be nice Perhaps a more important question is did I miss similar settings published by other sites Do you have Import of secure policies any pointers I am being asked to setup a super-secure PC for banking purposes and ideally it would only have access to a limited set of banking sites and nothing else thus disabling any and all other Windows connectivity Any suggestions on this front would be greatly appreciated I did not find any way to limit internet access to just a given set of sites note - doing this at the browser level is not good enough since say a keylogger can use its own connectivity as needed to phone back to base but I guess something along the lines of above settings at least tries to turn off various other protocols features that I may not need Thank you for your pointers and thoughts

Over the weekend we rolled out a new database that necessitated upgrading all the PC's to Access XP. In order to do that I first uninstalled every Office installation entirely and then reinstalled the complete package.

All went well except for one laptop. When the install begins the machine responds with the error message 'The System Administrator has set policies to prohibit this installation.' I've looked at the local policies but couldn't find anything that referenced installing software. Furthermore, I've logged on as a domain admin and also tried local admin and still I get the message.

I've asked our network admin if he's set anything and he said no. Anyone have any ideas about this? Very confusing.

A:Changing Local Policies in W2K

You can change the policies by going to:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Local security Policy.

In order to change these you most have administrative rights to the computer. Also any domain polices you have in place override local polices.

When you set them up an account do not give them admin priviledges. This will not allow them to install programs, delete windows for protected files etc with out admin priviledges. I also believe they will not be able to create a user profile, or any other computer functions.

You can then modify locally on each computer the privilages by typing
%SystemRoot%\system32\secpol.msc /s
in the run line
