Screen Resolution Distorted

Q: Screen Resolution Distorted

What cause the screen resolution to be distorted?

It is not the monitor. When the monitor is connected to another system it is displaying perfectly.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Suddenly my screen resolution, which is always set at 800 x 600, is too big for my screen. I've tried to reset it at different resolutions and then return to 800 x 600 but the screen image is still too big. Help!

A:800 x 600 screen resolution distorted

800 x 600? Really? Are you using a netbook or something? 800 x 600 displays are few and far between these days.
Also, by too big, do you mean objects on the screen are too big, or that there are some parts that go beyond the boundary of the screen?

Hi everyone.
I would be very grateful for helping reply.
Few days ago I was playing a comp game when my display resolution appeared distorted. In order to find a solution I went through all necessary steps that are given by bloger in internet: Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings. My display is set at 1280 x 800 pixels that is maximum here but it still looks distorted. I mean control panel, internet explorer, icons, even fonts look bigger then they were. Please help me!! ㅠㅠ

Ok, so im essentially computer illiterate, so you have to talk to me as if i were a child.
I was playing league of legends (i know) and my computer crashed. I rebooted, rejoined the game, and 30 seconds in it crashed again. It would not reboot after that, saying "no boot device detected". After a quick goodle search some people said that forcing a computer shutdown and restarting it would work. I tried that, and it did, sort of...Now the resolution is Huge, and everything is distorted, icons are pixelated, way larger than they should be, and logos are all screwed up. I have no idea what to do now

A:no boot device / distorted resolution

It's possible that due to repeated overheating and stress due to unwanted shutdowns/crahes, the motherboard and some components are damaged. Best to take it to a computer repair shop for them to diagnose better. By the way,  to the BC Community.

Right click an empty spot on the desktop - Screen resolution - what is the current resolution? What is the highest to which it can be changed? Try that resolution.

When I save a particular picture (JEPG type) either by dragging it onto the desktop or right click 'save as', the image (both as an icon and in Windows Photo Gallery) is squished into a fat line. It works fine, however, when I view it in Microsoft Office Picture Manager and PictureViewer, but Paint can't read the file. This also occurs when I open up my USB drive and view similar images not saved from the computer I'm currently using. I'm not sure whether it's because of the picture's dimensions, graphics settings (Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430), or monitor settings. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I'm new here and this is my first post I looked around a Forcing Resolution Resolution Screen Native Than Higher little and found one other thread with a similar question but the question wasn't really answered I can't find anything on the net that doesn't confuse me so bad it makes my head hurt so I thought I'd try asking here Thanks in advance for any answers I get I will try and be as thorough as possible although the resulting question will be simple I'll start out with why I am asking the question to begin with So I am trying to play a game I used to play nearly ten years ago It's a free online game called Continuum Subspace and there are user created quot zones quot or variations of the game within the game if that makes sense I play in a zone called Trench Wars It's a top down game meaning you are looking down at your ship as if from above and the screen scrolls as you move to reveal more of the area map you are playing in You are in a spaceship of your choice with varying weapons for each ship The game requires aiming at your enemies before firing at them and anticipating their moves Well I Forcing Screen Resolution Higher Than Native Resolution noticed that playing at a higher resolution allows you to see more of your immediate area and expands your view of the map It works just like your desktop in essence The higher the resolution the smaller the icons but the more space you have In the game the higher the resolution the smaller the ships are but you can see more space around you Obviously this Forcing Screen Resolution Higher Than Native Resolution would give an advantage to anyone playing on a higher resolution as they would be able to see their enemies and fire before the enemy even knew they were there My native resolution for a quot LCD TV is x This is fine Forcing Screen Resolution Higher Than Native Resolution except when playing continuum So I tried changing my resolution to the max which is x Well the screen expanded and cut off parts of my screen everything got blurry and had a blue tint to it I figured this is probably not good for my TVs functionality as I have burnt out old monitors in the past by running too high of a resolution So I went to my NVIDIA Display Properties and started messing around I realized that changing to a higher resolution x from here still caused me to lose part of the screen but the blue tint wasn't there It's still vaguely blurry but not enough to really notice So I went to the resizing tab and resized my screen to fit at the higher resolution I ended up with resolution of x at HTz refresh I resized my icons and text and the screen is perfect now But it is much higher than the native resolution of my monitor So my question is will keeping it at this resolution cause my TV to quot burn out quot or have any otherwise adverse effects System Specs that might be important Display Geforce GTX ti connected through HDMI to quot LCD TV TV Panel Resolution - x Display Resolution Scan Rates - HDMI Suggested Resolutions p i p p i I don't know what the p and i stuff is I tried reading about it but it's so uninteresting and makes entirely no sense to me I just want to know if I'm ruining my monitor by using Geforce to make my own custom resolution Thanks

A:Forcing Screen Resolution Higher Than Native Resolution

Simple answer is: you can not go over the native resolution of LCD panel because its physical thing for each pixel lcd panel has a cell you can not have more pixels than there is physical pixels in that panel.

smaller than native resolutions achieved by grouping more than one cell to form pixel thats why non native resolution on lcd sometimes gets blurry or edgy

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop for 3 years but about 5 months ago, my laptop's screen started to oddly distort. I move my screen a little and it goes away but the distortion comes back like 5 seconds later and this repeats countless times. Is there a solution to this problem? Here is a picture:

Hi all!

I just hit a serious problem with regards to my laptop's monitor every time I access Word. The screen becomes distorted and then it goes completely black and the system either freezes or it automatically restarts!

I suspect it has to do with my Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics card, but, is there anyone who know how to fix this problem?

Hello all,

I have another question for you. I don't know if I've posted this in the right forum or not.

Yesterday I noticed something weird going on with my monitor. Usually, the page I have open stretches from side to side with no problem. Now, it will just start to stretch out or shrink away from the edges of the screen for no reason. Also, when it's stretched out, I can't read what's written at the very edges. Annoying.

I checked the display setting and it's still at my usual 1024x768 pixels. Nothing has changed. I've done nothing new to the computer.

Could it be the Windows 98 doing something funky? Is my monitor going bad? Has anyone experienced this?

I will appreciate any input. Thanks!

okay, just a few days ago my computer started a problem that it had about a year ago. My computer would freeze up, swiggly vertical lines would appear, and bsod saying the problems was something starting with nvm. I immediately recognized it as a problem with my graphic card and downloaded the latest driver. It didn't work. I tried system restore and repeatedly downloading and uninstalling drivers but still have the same problems, this usually happens after the computer comes out of stand by. Last year, it went away the next day but this problem now is going on for about 3 days. I'm also going to provide a picture of my screen.

My specs:
windows 7 business 64 bit
intel quad core 2.4 ghz
nvidia 8800GT

A:Distorted Boot screen

The screen you are talking about is the POST Diagnostics screen. It list IRQs processor speed, etc. This screen shows just before it turns over command to the operating system. The system sounds relatively new and the BIOS "should" be able to handle the 15GB drive. Check these few things though. What thype of drive is the 15GB? (ATA/66 or 100?) I know that the 6GB is more than likely Standard EIDE. The 15GB maybe interfering with it. Disconnect the 6GB and see if it does the same thing. If it does then check the mainboard vendor and see if it can handle the large drive. If so, then try a BIOS update and that should do it.. Good Luck

Not sure if this is a monitor problem - or a display / video card issue, so apologies if this should be posted elsewhere.

I am using Adobe Indesign CS2 and the grid squares are just not in proportion, ie they're not perfect squares. The vertical length is longer than the horizontal width.

I have no idea where (or how) to make any adjustments.

Two days ago I woke up and my computer screen picture is distorted. It is primarily the print that has been effected, the larger the item, the less the distortion interferes. The print is very difficult to read. I am guessing some sort of virus, but am unsure of what to do. We have been running scans, but that has not worked. Thanks so much for any light you may be able to shed!!! Kim

It was originally windows Vista Home Basic..and that's what I tried to install. I also tried to install windows 7, Vista premium, professional...everytime I try to install any version of windows it starts to install..then my computer restarts and goes to the last step.. 'completing windows installation' then my screen flickers to black and then a distorted screen comes on...I wait for awhile and nothing. I cannot reinstall windows and I have no idea what to do. When I manually restart my computer it starts to boot up distortion and tells me windows didn't fully install. What can I do?

A:LCD laptop screen has distorted colors

You likely can't, at least not easily. Probably one of three things. The cable from the motherboard to the display is wearing out and has a broken wire(s). The display is failing and needs to be replaced. Or the video card/motherboard has a fault and needs to be replaced. I suppose it could also be a video driver problem but it sounds more like a hardware fault to me.

I recently made the mistake of attempting to update my video drivers and unintentionally uninstalling a lot of other drivers. I have a Nvidia GeForce 6600 video card and was unaware that my video drivers on my motherboard were also Nvidia so to uninstall I just went through the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and removed "Nvidia Drivers." I thought I had fixed everything and reinstalled all the drivers needed, but now when I boot my BIOS screen as well as my Windows screen on initial boot is distorted and doesn't fit the screen. I know it's nothing severe and my computer is running perfectly fine, but I'm just wondering what the problem is that could be causing this. I run Windows XP.

Welcome to TSF....

It is either a problem with the monitor = try another monitor, or a problem with the video display adapter, some where you are loosing part of the signal that processes trace information. I would evey try removing all of the display adapters thru safe mode and reboot normally and let windows re-install the drivers.

My newest task is centered around an HP Pavilion 15-p033ca laptop with a broken screen. Replacing the screen is actually super simple but my issue lies elsewhere.

Normally I would hook the laptop up to a monitor via VGA cable. This newer laptop only has an HDMI hook-up, so I hooked it up to my TV with that cable. The HP logo upon start up is semi-visible as the picture is distorted. So, before I spend money and order the screen my question is...

Does an HDMI relay the Broken screens picture to the TV and that's why is messed up? or should the TV picture still be clear? Like when a broken screen laptop is hooked to an external monitor with a VGA and the external monitor works fine.

I'm worried there may be an internal GPU or Mobo issue aside from the screen being broke.... Finally is there a better way I can test this instead?

Thanks for any info or Ideas in advance!

My husband and I bought 2 older gateway MX8734 Laptops for our children. I was wondering if they were okay because when you first turn them on, the screen picture is distorted and flickers for about 6 seconds before it goes clear.

For example: The desk top picture of my husband and son is blurred / distorted at first, and then after a bit, it clears up and is fine.

Here is the support site for the Gateway MX8734 laptop.

It appears to have Intel GMA 950 graphics, but we need to confirm the exact graphics device in those laptops.

I'm guessing they have a Mobile Intel 940GML/943GML/945GM/945GMS/945GT express chipset graphics device, but you can confirm that by expanding the "Display Adapters" heading in the Device Manager and seeing what's listed there.

The most current Windows Vista 32-bit driver ( for that graphics device is here.

If they have an older driver version, updating the driver may help.

Do the following in one or both of them:

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

It appears that your installation is missing almost ~3 years of updates including critical security/stability Windows updates including SP1. You really can't expect Windows 7 to run without hiccups after so much time without those updates.

I doubt the legitimacy of your installation, could you please confirm that your version of Windows 7 is genuine? Your hosts files also reveal some troubling information about Adobe products installed on your machine.

As per forum rules, we need to confirm that your installation has been legitimately activated before proceeding any further.

Try going into safe mode and uninstalling your video card drivers through the device manager, and then reboot and see if you get the same thing. If you can get into Windows normally reinstall your video card drivers, and reboot again and see if it comes back. I would recommend stopping by and checking if there are any newer drivers before reinstalling them.

Also have you installed any programs lately that deal with video or your monitor things like that?
Because they could be starting up with your machine and it could be as simple as turning it off in msconfig.

Hope this helps.

I stupidly left a Dell TFT monitor close to a large power amplifier
Now when I power up the screen looks awful.

Have moved the screen away from amp for over 24 hours now and still the same. Can't find a degausse on the monitor.

Tried other TFT monitor on computer and it works fine.

Any ideas how I can get this monitor back to working order?

A:Left Monitor By Power Amplifier Now Distorted Screen

You will have to find a way to degauss the monitor, if there is no option in the menu, or button to push, then you may be stuck with buying a new monitor. google the model number and see if there are any instructions on how to do it through the monitor if it is to hard to read.

Still get wavey lines three distorted screens side by side.

The monitor refresh rates are different in what they can support. Change the monitor type to SVGA @640x480 256 colors and it should work. What make and model is the newer monitor? And does it support the rrefresh rates and number of colors you are setting it to. No monitor will display more than it is physically capable of displaying.

Have you tried checking for corrupted files? When your parent's computer boots up (as you said it does, it just takes a bit) go into Command Prompt, and type in the command SFC/scannow, it's not case sensitive. It should then search for any corrupted drivers, files, or registry entries. Your guess is probably quite accurate, but just try this.

Have a nice day!

I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!

A:[SOLVED] 1920x1080 screen resolution on a 15.6" Laptop Screen

1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.

If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.

Thanks to whoever moved this post, i didnt know were to put it, also,, PROBLEM FIXED, if anyone gets this problem on WINDOWS 7 all you do is:

Step 1: right click ->> Screen Resolution
Step 2: Change the Multiple displays to Duplicate these displays.

This wont fit the whole desktop on ure screen if u have a big widescreen like mine, but this will make it unable to move items off the screen

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum, just joined actually, and I had a quick question. When I set my resolution to any other res other than the highest possible i get a black outline around my screen due to the resolution not stretching to fit my entire screen. This is fairly recent, as it never used to happen. I'm figuring it might be a driver problem, but I'm not sure. Any help would be great.

A:When lowering screen resolution, screen does not stretch to fit

Hi SevenUltimate welcome to the forums

I see you have a Geforce 220, I have the 210, the model down from you and have exactly the same issue.

Firstly, yes it's a driver issue. I have had to roll back to 258 edition to get it working properly again.

Take a look at my post about it here: Make Full screen actually look full screen maybe the suggestions will work for you, although they didn't for me.

Failing that, I'm willing to upload the 258 edition drivers to my Skydrive if you want? (mods/admins: please let me know if this is against the rules, don't think it is, but you never know)

Hope it helps

For some reason, my native screen resolution will no longer fit my monitor. (1360x768)

I've updated my graphics card driver (NVIDIA GTX 650)
Auto Adjust won't work

Setting the native resolution via the systems Display Settings puts me in a hyper widescreen mode with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

Doing the same through the NVIDIA control panel however, makes the screen fit vertically, but extend way past the edge of the screen to the left. using Auto Adjust still not working after this.

I am at my wits end and have no idea what to do. pls halp

I'm using windows 10, 64-bit OS if that's relevant :)

I recently up graded my moniter and video card. the monitor is a sony, only I am not sure of the size. the video card is a nvidia gforce 4xxx with 64 meg memoery. the loargest I can get the screen resolution is 1024x768, I would like to make it bigger if at all possible, can anyone help me please?

A:screen resolution

Welcome to TSF....

The resolution you see is a combination between the monitor and the video card, if the monitor will not handle resolution above 1024x768 then you are up the creek. I would check the specs on the monitor on the web site for the manufacturer of the monitor and if the nvidia only has 64 Mb memory then it probably will not handle much above that either. I would try a video card with atleast 128 Mb or more.

Here's my problem:

I have windows 7 ultimate (64bit) and i just got a new HP w2007v monitor (1680x 1050).
The problem is that i can't use the monitors native resolution.
Im useing an ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card. I have tried Vista drivers too but they didn't work. I have also tried to make a new driver with Powerstrip but i couldn't use the driver that I made.

Is there a solution for this kind of a problem or do I really have to wait till Microsoft or ATI comes out with theire solution? The closest i can use is 1600x 1200 but it kinda disturbes the eye.

Could anyone tell me how to fix this problem and how could I use my monitors native resolution?

Thank you!

Hello Lill, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you currently using the latest Windows 7 64-bit 10.3 ATI drivers?

Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

It looks like your monitor currently does not support 64-bit drivers at all. It only has 32-bit Vista drivers available for it that most likely could be used in 32-bit Windows 7 as well.

Select your operating system HP w2007v 20 inch LCD Monitor - HP technical support (Turkey - English)

If having the 64-bit ATI drivers installed do not help, then you might consider installing the 32-bit Windows 7 instead and using the 32-bit ATI driver along with the 32-bit Vista monitor driver to see if you can select your native resolution afterwards.

Hope this helps some,

Hey, my screen resolutions never seem to stay like they were. I had a 1440 * 900 selected which diappeared from the resolution list, so when I opned my PC this morning, my resolution was changed to something else than 1440 * 900 AND . . this resolution isn't supported anymore.

Another screen resolutions that are possible and have right dimensions, are 1680 * 1050 which is a bit too small for my eyes and 1280 * 768, which is a bit too big for my eyes. The 1440 * 900 is just about the right size, but this option seems to want to disappear every now and then. Any ideas?

Hi guys

I have just upgraded my HP D530 from Win2000pro to Win XP pro SP2 and everything running perfectly. It's hooked on a LAN and I logged in as a administrator and have done everything including setting the screen resolutions to 1280x1024

However, everytime my user logged in, it will changed to 1024x768 and my user will have to change it back to 1280x1024. Strangely when the PC has been shutdown and on again, it will changed back to 1024x768. But when I logged in as administrator, it has no problem.

Is there something wrong with my setting?

Pls help. Thanks

However, Windows 7 will only allow me to set it as high as 1280 X 1024

Somebody please help me!!!

A:Need Screen Resolution Help Please!!!

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You are currently running a standard VGA adapter, which has poor resolution.

You need to download a graphics driver either from the computer manufacturer's support site or the hardware manufacturer's support site.

If you can't get one from either, Windows may well provide you with one through Windows Updates.

You could try going into device manager and updating the graphics driver from there.

i have i lg 42" hdtv and i have just bought a packard bell computer which uses windows 7, i plugged a rgb cable in and an audio cable they both worked fine the screen fit perfect, until i plugged a hd cable in, my resolution is 1920 x 1080 (recommended), however this does not fit my tv it is to big, although when i try to go 1680 x 1050 which is the one below it simply is to small. so i have no idea what to do ????

I've always had much better luck using HDMI cables for large TVs. I know for my 42" Vizio, once I set the resolution, I had to also adjust the positioning and size in the TV's settings.

On a side note...Packard Bell still makes computers? I thought they went out of business over a decade ago.

Not sure about the software installation but you should be able to change the screen resolution of your monitor from the control panel. You should have a section there labelled "monitor" or the name of your graphic card.
Mine says "Control panel for NVIDIA" along with the graphic card icon but yours may be different.

Open this option and there should be a page on which you can change your screen resolution.
Mine is a slider but it could equally be a selection list. eg

800 x 600
960 x 600
1024 x 768
1162 x 864
1280 x 768
1280 x 800
1280 x 960
1280 x 1024
1360 x 768
1440 x 900
1680 x 1050

Pick the one you want and retry the software.

Best of luck

Hi Everyone,

Ihave a new computer. Iwant to download a desktop wallpaper.Everything I see is smaller resolution than my wide screen 1140X900. How can i get these wallpapers to fit my screen?

A:Screen Resolution

Hi charley1.
I assume you mean "1440"X900.?
You can force a smaller size wallpaper to fill the screen by right clicking on your desktop, select properties>Desktop tab. Under "Position" select "Stretch" from the drop down menu.
Unfortunetly, you will end up with a stretched image that does not look real well.
There are plenty of free wallpapers out there available in 1440X900 if you look around.
Another alternative would be to just make your own or take a larger image and crop out a 1440X900 section of it.

I'm not sure how to fix this at the moment... but it is pretty annoying having to arrange my desktop icons every time I restart after playing a game.

Each LCD pixel = 1 displayed pixel, therefore they are not usually "scalable".

I saw this happen once on a customer's PC. He somehow managed to change one of his desktop shortcuts for Mozilla Thunderbird email.

The shortcut properties' compatibility tab was checked off for 256 colors @ 640x480 resolution. Every time he started Thunderbird, his resolution would change and then not change back once he got out of the program.

Maybe start with Skype. You have to right-click on the desktop program shortcut, select 'properties' and look at the compatibility tab for it, and then maybe for each program that starts automatically when Windows starts. I hope that's what it is and you find the culprit
