PCI USB expansion card causes CMOS error

Q: PCI USB expansion card causes CMOS error

The USB expansion card is a Via Vectro vt USB card PCI expansion causes CMOS error that I scavenged from an old build whose motherboard fried when the cooling fan suddenly stopped working it was an OLD build CPU couldn't shut off automatically when the temp got too high and I know most boards have been able to do that for about years It was tested working in another PC emachines T its older than my little sister but it still works so I use it to test stuff I upgraded it from mb to mb of RAM which can comfortably run Windows with aero turned off although I do dual boot with Android x because PCI USB expansion card causes CMOS error why not so I PCI USB expansion card causes CMOS error know the card isn't broken The PC I'm trying to install it in PCI USB expansion card causes CMOS error is a Lenovo Thinkserver TS which I upgraded to gb RAM ECC of course I know I don't need enterprise grade stuff but I hate blue screens and corrupted files and put a TB Seagate Barracuda in When I put the USB expansion card into the PCI slot and press the power button it gives me a CMOS error beeps which means the card is incompatible with the BIOS This doesn't make sense to me because PCI-e the Lenovo is supposed to be software backwards compatible with PCI the expansion card How do I get it to work EDIT Its a full-size pcie so its not like I'm trying to stick a big card into a tiny hole

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ah... you've transported us all back to the bad old days of the IRQ error (Interrupt ReQuest).

At that time there were only 15 IRQs and it was quite common to need to manually change a new device's IRQ position so that it did not conflict with another device, freezing the system.

Modern PCs use the APIC system which greatly expands the number of IRQs and reduces the possibility of conflicts.
But this system relies on Plug-and-Play devices to automatically configure the IRQs. That is why the vast majority of people reading this will have never heard of it.

Can you get into your BIOS settings with this card installed?

You could try the card in a different PCI slot if you have one. That would sometimes change the IRQ in older systems.

You might also try doing a ClearCMOS procedure with the card plugged in. That may force the system to reassign IRQs for all the P&P devices and free up whatever IRQ that old card insists it has to have.

The PCI card (Adaptec 29160N RAID) is 32-bit but the expansion slot on the motherboard (Super Micro P4DPR-6GM+) is 64-bit 66MHz PCI (3.3V). The card's POST doesn't show up during boot. Is this because it's 32-bit and the slot is 64-bit?

I upgraded the memory in a computer, booted up the computer and new memory was accepted. I shut down the computer and installed an SMC network card in a computer. I went to boot the computer up and I got three high pitched beeps, followed by a pause, then a low tone noise. Everything boots up except the monitor will not come on. I have taken out the additional memory I put in, have taken this computer completely apart and reassembled it and when I boot it up I still get the beeps and the monitor will not respond. I have double checked all the jumpers. Any clue to what this could be?

A:Installed Expansion Card

From that pattern, it sounds like a video problem.
Might be the Video Cards is loose in the socket. Take it out and try reinstalling it again. Also, check to see if there is any dirt/etc. on the contacts. An old trick is to use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Likewise, blow out any dust/etc. in system.

Also, does it work without the SMC network card installed?

Another possibility is that it got a static charge when you were installing the network card.If that happened, the only thing that you can do is replace it.

Hope this helps

I am working on an older MB, a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3. I want to use Sata 3 for connecting my SSD and hard drive. The only onboard SATA 3 connections are GSATA using a Marvell controller. I have read these are not very good and not as fast as Intel ICH10.

Do I need to buy an expansion card? If so, can anyone recommend one?

Have checked all the BIOS advanced boot up devices can see all hard drives, USB drives, CDROMs and external USB drives but not the relevant SATAIII drive. I am presuming its due to the fact its on an expansion card and have not found a solution please help.

Usually if you get the "C-MOS checksum error-defalts loaded" error message when turning on your PC it is because the CMOS battery is flat or your motherboard is faulty. However it is not very often that a faulty motherboard is the cause.

Try replacing the battery.

My secondary rig keeps showing a CMOS error on boot, but only if it has been shutdown. On a restart or at desktop, there is no problem, and SpeedFan shows the Vbat at 3.10v, which is normally sufficient to indicate that the battery is okay.

If I understand, the PS provides current to maintain the battery when powered on, so that tends to indicate that the battery is bad, regardless of what SpeedFan says, but I'm wondering if there is something that I'm overlooking?

Since you can get intot he BIOS I would recommend setting it to defaults (usually by pressing F9), then update the date and time, then saving and exiting to see if that fixes it.

Recently whenever I unplug my computer and plug it back in, or whenever the power to my house goes out, it gives me a CMOS checksum error at boot up and resets the system clock and all the bios settings to defaults.

I read about the error and it seemed these errors are usually caused by a dead system board battery, but the symptoms for that sound like it does it every time you start your computer, which isn't the case for me.

Is it likely to be a dead system battery? Are they easy to replace?

A:CMOS Checksum Error

Yes this sounds like your issue and no their not hard to replace.

After opening the side of your case, look for something about the size and shape of a quarter mounted on the system board. Usually the battery sits under a tight clip and you can remove it by lifting the clip. Sometimes they snap into a socket and you have to push a little tab to release them. Most batteries are the CR2032. You can purchase these at a Walmart or Radio Shack.

After replacing the battery, start up your computer and press the appropriate key to enter the BIOS setup screen. (Usually it's the DELETE or INSERT key. Watch the screen for instructions or consult your manual.)

Set the system clock to the correct time, then save and exit. If your computer works normally now, you're all done. If it doesn't recognize one or more hard drives, go back into Setup and look for the hard drive "Auto config" or similar. Sorry, but every BIOS is different, so it's impossible to give more detailed instructions.

I had reset bios to optimized defaults and rebooted, and it has been like this since. The only other prob was a wrong date issue. Wassup? This machine has been going fine for several years, and has had no recent hardware changes/upgrades.

Hello all,
I was trying to install Windows 7 Starter from a bootable USB and I got this same error. Upon reading this threat, I found the solution. In the boot-up list in your BIOS menu, you have to remove the Atheros boot agent / LAN from the list.
It will then boot to whichever boot-ready device you've got.
I know this doesn't solve the entire issue of this threat, but at least it'll remove this pesky error.

Sounds as though that motherboard mught be shot to pieces. However, it's unusual for PS2 keyboards not to obliged at least with the Delete key at boottime. There are a few motherboards out there with keyboard and mouse sockets reversed - that it, mouse on the left as you face the back. Could this be one such, and are you not bothering to look when you plug in?

That said, "CPU was changed" is a strange message to see unless, of course, you have changed it. My money is still on a dud board.

Sometimes, when i turn on my computer, i get the error: CMOS checksum error - defults loaded. It has only started happening recently, and it's become quite frequent. It resets my time, and it's rather annoying as i have to keep setting my time i turn on the computer. Other than reseting my time, i'm not sure what else it does.

I've read on the internet that it my computer battery running out. If it is, how can i make sure because i don't want to get a new battery for no reason. I'm hoping it's something like a faulty setting i've made, or a virus as i can remove it without having to spend money.

So does anyone know how to fix this error message, and if it's my battery, how can i confirm it?

A:CMOS CheckSum Error...

The solution is to replace your battery in your comp.

I jumped when I read the title to your post! Oh boy! I'm actually get to use my former skills as an embedded system developer again! I used to be a high tech engineer and switched to being a comp tech during the high tech collapse.

Anyhow, CMOS is a type of memory. It stores values/settings for your BIOS between sessions. When the BIOS starts up it reads them from CMOS and saves them when it shuts down (or whenever you explicitedly save settings within BIOS) Now, CMOS is volatile memory, meaning that it's contents will be lost in the absence of power. That's why your comp has a battery. The battery kicks in when you turn off the power to the comp and recharges when you power on. But over time, batteries can lose their capacity, hence, your CMOS loses it's contents between sessions. The BIOS can only check the checksum of the CMOS contents to determine if something is wrong with the CMOS but exactly what caused the checksum failure, it can't tell. What tipped me off was that everything returns to default which means all the CMOS data was lost. That usually means the battery is dead.

Now, onto the reason why I'm going nuts. I am not an expert, but I have always considered myself fairly proficient in fixing computer problems, until now. I have a Elite K7SEM motherboard, a little less than 2 years old, and a CMOS Checksum Error that will not go away, despite changing the battery, clearing the jumper settings, and going over the BIOS inch by inch. My question is, besides resetting the time everytime I turn the computer on, can I go on indefinitely like this? Or, will the motherboard finally say enough is enough and just shut down on me?

Thank you

A:CMOS Checksum Error

You can run a motherboard without a battery all together. You may get less performance out of the system because the BIOS settings will be at default levels but it should work.

Now, its possible that the replacement battery is no good, I had it happen to me before. You can also examine the battery holder's contacts to make sure they aren't the problem. The jumper for clearing the CMOS must be set for Normal not clear, And you must enter the BIOS, load the defaults and adjust the settings to the desired, then SAVE and EXIT. Also if you've added any new hardware you may wish to remove it or check for BIOS issues/updates.

Might also be worth stripping the computer done piece by piece to see if its defective piece of hardware thats causing the issue.

POST Code / beep code

Per computerhope dot com slash beep dot htm

"POST ABCs - The computer POST (Power On Self Test) tests the computer, insuring that it meets the necessary system requirements and that all hardware is working properly before starting the remainder of the boot process. If the computer passes the POST the computer will have a single beep (with some computer BIOS manufacturers it may beep twice) as the computer starts and the computer will continue to start normally. However, if the computer fails the POST, the computer will either not beep at all or will generate a beep code, which tells the user the source of the problem."

From your description, the single beep meant that it POSTed okay...
but I am not sure what you mean by intermittent...

The codes will vary somewhat per bios... see the above website for more details.
It provides very detailed information on the post codes.

Hello, I replaced the cmos battery today because the last one died out. After booting the computer, however, the following error appears: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device". This error didn't show up before and I didn't touch any of the hard drive cables. Any idea on how to fix this? Thank you.

Good day everyone!

I need some help.

MOtherboard : Asus
RAM: 1 GB ddr2
CPU: Core 2 duo

Please give me some ideas how to solve this problem.

A:CMOS error, no keyboard & no mouse

The CMOS battery may have worn out and needs replacing. It's a little silver, coin-shaped battery which clips on to the motherboard. Be sure to discharge electro-static charge from your body before touching the motherboard components.

Good morning to everyone. Why am I see CMOS settings error, press DEL to enter setup, press F1 to continue during boot up on everyday? Besides that, the CPU making loud sound during boot up and also when I am using my computer on everyday, I am not sure whether the fans or the HDD is the culprit.

A:CMOS settings error during boot up.

Go into BIOS (DEL) and load defaults (either first screen or exit menu). Open the case and stop the fans with your finger for a second or two and see if the sound cuts.

A:Cmos Bad Check Sum Error On First Boot

Your CMOS battery is dead That's all.

Pop it out and go down to a hardware store or a radio shack and get a replacement. It's about the size of a quarter and is usually located near the bottom right of the motherboard.

A:Solved: cmos cheksum error

Hi and welcome!

I am going to assume that “when you turn your computer on” after turning it off completely, that you are receiving the error message – CMOS Checksum Error or Mismatch.

This is usually a result of the battery on the motherboard being defective or simply just being old. Which also leads me to believe you have an older system, the batteries usually last at least 5 years.

When this happens, your CMOS (BIOS) is reset to defaults, including the date and time of the system. You will have to enter the BIOS each time and at the very least reset the date & time on the system to your current date & time. If you do not do this, your operating system will have a hard time running or updating.

The batteries are usually simple to replace and they are also fairly cheap to purchase, around about $3.00 or so.

Thanks and have a wonderful new year!

Today when i was using my computer, there was a powercut and the computer got switched off suddenly. Then when i restarted it i got an error at the POST screen saying

CMOS checksum bad
Press f1 to run setup
Press f2 to load defaults.

Why did this happen? Earlier also there were my computer was switched off suddenly, but this error did not come. Also, after i hit f2 to load defaults, and when i booted to windows XP, the system time was changed to April 2000. Why did this happen?

Thanks ...

I located an older mobo an Explorer III motherboard screen says on boot up Award Modular Bios v pg followed by P VX DM Xplorer III Bios v s The board appears to function fine but CMOS isn t holding the setup config Error Failed CMOS Battery It loads the Defaults cpu to MHz when it should report the value I set it at MHz The cpu is a Pentium-S Mhz Since the battery holder was broken I replaced it amp added new V battery The battery measures V but the quot Error on checksum quot still appears amp I still get reports for quot CMOS Battery Failed quot So re-heated and also removed amp re-soldered the holder conn s about x s but still get the same result each time How do I buzz out the connector I have No diagrams of board I would check the board with a meter if I knew where the check points were located This board as said in your file CMOS Battery Failed Error performs an quot auto detect quot via SpeedEasy and is worth keeping since it has a low level CMOS Battery Failed Error format capability nbsp

Whenever my computer restarts it generates a checksum error and I have to reconfigure the CMOS. I have dual monitors, one crt and one tft. My system will not start without resetting the cmos unless i detach the tft monitor. I am running Windows XP pro service pack 2, with a ATI Rage 9800 pro graphics card. No changes to the system, Just suddenly started to happen. I can attack the monitor once XP begins to boot up, but not at restart.

How can the monitor affect the CMOS. If I start up with just the crt atached, boot up windows and then shutdown again, everything works fine. It is only if the tft is atached that I have problems.

Any one know what is going on?

I have an Epox mobo 4GEA+.

I am getting an CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded error.

I think I know how it happened - my little angel turned off the PC without shutting down XP.

When I turn on the PC I get a single beep and then the error. I cannot press F1, or any key, it doesn't seem to recognize the keyboard. I am locked up at the error screen.

I doubt its the CMOS battery because of the suddeness of the error.

Will clearing the CMOS activate the keyboard? Better solutions?

A:Not your normal CMOS checksum error

You can always try that.

If it doesn't help, then do a Repair Install.
