Hey guys I am frustrated I wanted to dual-boot Windows on my Windows Home Premium laptop and shrinked my Drive Hard Reset disk by about GB I went on to create a new volume as you can see in the screenshot below I actually re-installed Reset Hard Drive Windows and succesfully managed to do so but now when I boot the Windows installer I get to the quot select volume quot part and the only option I can choose is my Windows volume Windows II in the screenshot For every other volume all the options like formatting deleting and creating a new one are greyed out Trying to install on unallocated space also does not work Now I have almost given up I have got almost no space left on my active volume and can not increase it nor can I install a new operating system because it doesn't work any of the virtual volumes What I would like to do now is to either be able to extend my active volume or to reset the whole harddrive and to re-install Windows all over again Please help me sevenforums
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Well, for starters your disk is dynamic - no good. If you want that many primary partitions, initialize it in GPT.http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/367494-reset-hard-drive.html
I sometimes wonder about techs using tools such as Seatools, HDD regenerator etc to diagnose/repair hard drives. Do any of these tools beat Chkdsk in any way?
(besides data recovery tools, I guess those have no match in Windows).
IMO, always use the tool provided by the vender. At the time you need this tool, you don't need a 3rd party screw-up to 'help you' really mess it up.
I've said time and time again that solid state drives are the future but the truth of the matter is, traditional spinning disks still have a place inside a modern PC as a storage / backup drive. The question then becomes,...
Well I'm glad I have never bought a Seagate HD. I usually buy Western Digital, except my SSD is Samsung.
This is my first login and first topic , I see on this category thousands of topic at this time , my problem is error message "The disk is write protected" , I am wondering what is this mean and how to solve this error?
Have a wonderful day
I have an old Toshiba laptop and it is unusable and I was wondering if there was a way to factory reset it without a disk.

"...when you consider micro SD card slots on smartphones are on the way out."
Just because a prominent phone maker decides to experiment by not including the microSD slot, does not mean this tech is on the way out. There is REAL need for this, and if the big S doesn't want to include this in their phones, people will find other phones that do have this capability.
Lets not forget just how bad sales were/are for the S6.
Hello I have a Dell Inspiron laptop I have an image of the entire hard drive that I created when I first got the computer using Acronis TrueImage and I d like to restore that image returning the laptop back to that fresh clean original state I ve done this two or three times before and it worked great each time But now there s a problem Normally I would in boots as when drive external but laptop hard Primary recognized isn't drive used connect to the laptop a USB storage backup drive that has the disk image boot the laptop from a Rescue Media CD created by Acronis then restore that disk image from the back-up drive onto the laptop s HDD When I tried it this time round the laptop s HDD was not listed in TrueImage at all I created a new rescue media disk tried it again and got the same result I then took the HDD out of the laptop connected it to Primary hard drive boots in laptop but isn't recognized when used as external drive an adapter kit that let s you power up and plug in the drive via a USB port and external power supply and tried the same procedure using my desktop to run the operation Same result The drive was not detected by Acronis The drive does not seem to spin up at all Primary hard drive boots in laptop but isn't recognized when used as external drive when it is connected Keep in mind the drive still works when installed in the laptop -- it boots into Windows XP etc When I plug the drive into my desktop the drive does not show up in Disk Management Start Right-click My Computer Manage Disk Management It doesn t show up in either of the two right-side windows so there s no way I know of to format it or do any work on it in Windows When I go to Device Manager Disk Drives I see quot USB Device quot for that drive and under Properties it is listed as quot Disk Drives quot for quot Device Type quot and its status says it is working properly So what I don t get is it works fine when it is in the laptop boots into XP etc but when connected as an external drive or when the laptop is being run off of CD the drive can t be detected and not on just one computer but multiple Is it junk Any ideas nbsp
It's a power issue. Had the same issue taking a 2.5" laptop hdd and attempting to hook up w/ a passive usb sata hdd cable. my recommendation is to use a powered usb sata cable. like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119475 having proper power will allow the USB bus to detect and power the hdd correctly. Hope this helps, take care!
Hi every one
I need your help gays
I saved some files in my USB but when I explore my USB the files are not appear
it shows that usb is empty
I do not know what to do
Have you tried the same USB on a different pc? If not, do so.
Today, my external hard drive has not appeared on my PC. It did work before I went to sleep yet when I began my PC in the next morning, it didn't show. Can you please help me how to fix this?
There are a lot of different reasons for an HDD to stop showing. A few things you can try are:
Try using a different USB cable, make sure it is as short as the original one, or even shorter. This is important it terms of providing enough power for the drive to function properly.
Try connecting it to different USB ports.
Try connecting it to a different PC.
Sometimes the drive can misbehave due to insufficient power even if it appears to be spinning make sure you connect the HDD directly to the USB port and not through a USB hub.
Check if you can see the HDD in Windows Device Manager and in Disk Management. Good luck.
I have been using my external hard disk(WD My Passport Essential SE) 1 Tb, since last 6 months, but after a recent virus scan, my laptop is not showing the external hard disk, i have tried using My computer, Manage and Disk management.
I am unable to find external hard disk even in Disk management i.e. it is not showing.
So please can anyone help me in this concern......
I would really appreciate and thanks in advance
First, try accessing it from another computer to be sure it can be accessed elsewhere. The Western Digital Passport Essential has had a pretty high failure rate as seen in our shop... so the unavailable external hard disk may not have anything to do with the virus scan may have nothing to do with the problem.
In other cases, I would attempt to reinstall the Passport drive. You do not usually cause any damage to the data on the drive when you do this.
Thanks for any help in advance..
I own a WD MyBook 4TB hard drive, which I've used on Windows for the past 2 years. I got a macbook last week and hooked the drive into it, some error message came up so I figured it wouldn't work, however when I went to plug it back into my windows machine I got the "USB device not recognised" message, the laptop is windows 8. I then tried it on my fathers windows xp computer and it seemed to think it was a completely new hard drive..
I've done some googling on it but I just wanted to ask here incase I went formatting it by mistake or anything..any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you made some procedural error, allowing the Mac to alter the partition - - bad choice.
Using Windows tools, examine the partition on that drive - - should show up as
somelabel (dl): size HTFS
Healthy (other qualifiers)
Try Control Panel ->Admin Tools->Computer Mgmt->Disk Mgmt
Hey there all.
This problem just happened recently. Every time I put a blank CD in my CD drive, a message appears saying "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function. I can watch DVDs but it won't recognize any blank CDs I put.
Thanks in Advance.
First try this from the Windows Explorer after you have inserted a disc.
Right-Click on E: drive
Select Properties from the pop up menu
Select the Recording Tab
then check the "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box.
Hi I have a few questions about my external hard drive. I play games and I noticed that my internal hard drive was getting full so I bought a new external hard drive. I was wondering if I backed up my internal hard drive to my external one and then formatted my internal hard drive, would I have to re install everything or would I be able to access my games and such. Thanks for your time its much appreciated.
You would have to e-install all of your games, and applications, and windows updates
I have a three month old Dell Dimension GHZ P Gig Ram and a gig SATA Hard Drive When I got the computer I used the files and transfer PC Relocator utility And had in Error system drives did hard Message: disk find Setup not your installed any a bunch of unwanted extras that came with it I m having a Satellite Internet system installed and they wanted a clean install of windows XP So I opened the owner s manual and got out the reinstallation disk and the problems began By the way Dell tech support s only response has been to say gee that s not right and would send a tech sometime after Christmas Anyway heres step by step what I did I boot to the Dell reinstallation disk Error Message: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your system The windows setup screen appears and loads files The next screen says welcome to setup and offers three options -to setup XP press enters To repair XP press R to exit without installing XP press F I press enter and the following message comes up Setup did not find any hard disk installed in your computer Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected And any disk related configuration is correct ect Press F to quit It dose this if I try repair also Dell had me check the connections to the HD and Motherboard They re good And debug the hard drive No luck Everything worked fine until I put in the reinstallation disk Any help would be welcome nbsp
During Setup, it will ask you if you need any extra drivers such as SCSI (or SATA in your case). If so, press F6. Now you are in trouble, because SATA drivers come on a floppy and new(er) Dells don't have a floppy anymore. Borrow a floppy-drive from another PC and install that in your Dell.
Setting up with the Dell disks, I'm not sure if they are RESTORE-disks or full XP-disks.
That may cause another problem.

How to repair a corrupt 64gig flash drive
Hi, This really depends on how it has 'gone wrong'.
If it's a hardware failure then nothing you can do will sort it out.
But if it's a software/format failure then;
Save everything you want off of it with a program such as 'Recuva'.
Then Format it again by;
Right-click on the Flash drive's icon in 'explorer' or 'Computer',
Choose 'Properties' from the list,
Set the option of FAT 32,
Untick the 'Quick format' option, so that you are using the slower full format option.
Note that all the files that were on it will be gone, so be sure to save any valuable files first, if you can.

Hello I need urgent help with resolving this as I am trying to get the harddrive showing up or at least recover files by Hard Portable Drive External Slim detected Seagate PC not I was using it at school first and my computer froze so I shut down the Seagate Portable External Hard Drive Slim not detected by PC computer and restarted without safely removing Seagate Portable External Hard Drive Slim not detected by PC the hard drive at first the PC wouldnt reboot because I had it still plugged in after unplugging it and the PC loaded up it did not recognize the hard drive anymore I have tried it on several PCs including the one at home all using Windows and none of them recognize it I tried all USB ports on my PC and none of them work the light on the hard drive is ON so I know there is no connectivity issue I tried several free trial softwares even the ones by Seagate and none of them recognized the drive so I cannot use their tools for recovering files or detecting the hard drive When I check the Disk Management it does not show there When I check the Device Manager it does not show under USB controllers but it DOES show under Disk Drives I also checked and the drive is up to date The Model is BUP Slim BK In my quick launch the drive is recognized there and gives me the option to Eject it but it doesn t actually Eject it when I click on it it either stop responding or does nothing unless I manually unplug it EDIT After a really long time the Eject message says the device is already in use which is probably why it doesnt Safely eject nbsp
I am also having the same problem, as I need to get some stuff off my hard drive but it does not show up on any of it, was just wondering if you had found a way to fix this yet?
Ok im having this problem on 2 desktops. The drives are both DVD-RW drives. They show up properly in device manager and in my computer. That is, untill I stick a disc in it. Then it will spin and act like its about to read then it says its a CD drive with nothing inserted into it. If I explore the drive there is nothing in it. I went to device manager disabled and enabled it. also updated the driver and rolled back the driver they still do the same thing. Wondering if anyone has any ideas or solutions
What sort of CD are you using? it could just be that your drive can't read the specific type of disk.
I am looking for a new USB flash drive with all of the following features:
Metal case or very hard plastic. Not rubberized.
USB 3.0 with R/W speeds of at least 50MB/s
No cap, swivel cap or removable protective casing.
At least 16GB or more.
I still have SanDisk Cruzer Micro Titanium. I am looking for something similar in size and features, but faster with bigger capacity.
Any ideas? Thanks
I bought the Mushkin Enhanced Atom 64GB USB Flash Drive. The write speeds are a bit slower than I wanted at 20MB, but read speeds are above 100MB. I can't complain though as the drive performs as advertised. And for what I want it works perfectly. The casing is hard plastic not rubberized. I know you said no cap, I had that rule as well but grew tired of trying to sort through the available options. Anyway I wanted to pass the word on the recorded speed for my purchase. My last purchase was years ago for a 16GB Cruzer Micro like the one you have.
Here are the benchmarks for my flash drive.

My external drive cannot be detected by any computer. I also used diskmgmt and devmgmt. I plugged it to different usb ports as well but to no avail. I have important files here and I really need your help. thanks
What OS and how do u connect to this drive? Also have u tried the drive on another computer?
I'm in deep doggy-doo.
When my 2TB Sata-III drive wasn't being recognized (ported to a new build), I pulled the data cable off to check the connection and off came the little plastic tab that guides the plug onto the pins!
Without it, there is nothing to press contact between the cable & pins, let alone hold the cable firmly in place.
Worse, I can't even plug it in to rescue the data off it! I suspect I must have damaged the connection somehow when I plugged it in. The pins appear fine (within reason considering what happened.)
Gluing the tab back in place is no help if the connection still doesn't work and I need to unplug it again.
Am I screwed or is there a way around this mess (short of paying hundreds to some recovery service)?
Oh boy do I know the feeling, I once pulled off the same thing from a month old mobo, but I was able to find a replacement in a shop and soldered it back, maybe you can do the same ? Try finding a female SATA and soldering the other end of it to the HDD ?
Look no further than a solid state drive for breakneck speed. If a large-capacity drive for storage is what you're after, however, traditional spinning hard drives are still the best bet in terms of price per GB. And if you...
On a more interesting note, Seagate is already shipping 8TB HDD-s to its select customers, with 10TB ones to follow.
Besides, nothing beats the current 6TB Enterprise offer from Seagate anyway, in terms of price+performance+capacity. Let Western Digital lag behind as it does
Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.
Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:
After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.
I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:
(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).
I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.
Hi there Sedhadi,
If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.
When booting up my computer, directly after auto-detecting SATA devices, my computer regularly gives me an error that alternately reads "Primary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Resume..." or "Secondary Hard Disk Failure, Press F1 to Resume..." Sometimes the word "Slave" or "Master" are there after the words "Primary" or "Secondary" in there as well. While the content of the message varies, the result is usually the same: The startup process lags after auto-detecting the drives, then gives me this error.
I have three SATA hard drives and a DVD drive plugged in to my mb via SATA. When no HDD are detached, but I have boot media in the DVD drive, the computer starts up quickly and normally, with no errors. When any or all of the HDDs are plugged in, I receive the above error. I borrowed a HDD from my roommate, plugged it in, attempted to boot up and still received the error. None of the HDD are bad, and it would be a pretty big coincidence for all four I've tested to fail at once.
What could the problem be?
When I plug in just one or two of the HDD + the DVD drive, the computer boots fine. When I plug in three HDD + DVD drive, failure! Do I perhaps need to upgrade my power supply?
So my DVD drive has died on my and I hear if u get a new one off Ebay u have to get the key from the old one DVD a drive 360 dead Replacing and stick it on the new so your Xbox will read it thats all well and good if your drive would work be picked up by PC The drive is dead and there is no way of getting the key Now if my logic is right the key is stored on one of the Microchips in the board so If I can get the chip off the board by heating it up what piece of Hardware would I need to read it and software to get the Needed information off in order to flash it onto the new XBox drive I plan to order I don t want to shell out on a new console as its in full working order despite DVD drive and doing it said way would be cheaper Yes Also if anyoen knows which chip it is on the Xbox Ben Q VAD Drive I be very happy I Plan on replacing it with another benQ drive I point out I do not intend to play pirated games I just want to be able to replace my DVD drive which may be against MS EuLA but I don t care as its not breaking UK law I will use it to back my games up again fully within UK law Thanks in advanced for replys nbsp
If you're positive that the old drive is dead (i.e. no power to the drive) then getting the key is impossible. if the drive has already been flashed then the key should have been saved. i'm quite positive there is no way to retrieve the key from the motherboard itself, without the use of specialized equipment, that you don't have access to anyways.
buy a new console and keep the old one for parts or sell it as is

1) I Can see drive in "My Computer"
2) Double click on drive in my computer and it says : "Please insert disc into drive H:"
3) Right click and select format and it says: "There is no disc in drive H. Insert a disc, and then try again"
plz provide any solution
Try removing or reformatting the partition from Disk Management. If you can't, see if you can delete the partition and create a new one.
Hey guys weird problem here The TB internal drive in my PC started slowly dying in December and my brother got me an SSD additional and connecting when laggy hard drives PC sluggish for Christmas I installed it and it works amazing flawlessly and I love it When I attempted to make my old dying drive a secondary hard drive Windows PC laggy and sluggish when connecting additional hard drives recognized it fine despite the SATA connection broken off and I was able to salvage what I wanted from it The speed of the transfer was blazing and I was pretty happy but I noticed Windows getting insanely laggy and sluggish The mouse would stop moving every few inches and the keyboard would stop responding Instead of normal lag such as me typing this sentence nothing happening and then it appearing in full a few seconds later when the lag would catch up it would be a jumble of letters For example if I typed quot wow my computer is going slow right now quot it would come out quot wom mpui gin sright n quot That s a new type of lag for me as my PC has never had issues I assumed this was due to the death of the drive and Windows having problems recognizing it or reading it Sure enough when I disconnected it everything ran smoothly I have an iOmega TB external drive LDHD-UP - don t judge it was on sale that I m not too fond of but I use regularly for storage and backup I usually have it plugged into the back of my PC and this presents a whole other issue which I need another thread for but I ve dealt with it fine and it normally works all right However I found out it s USB compatible and my PC has outlets on the top so I wanted to keep it plugged into there But when I do that I experience that exact same type of lag as before when the internal hard drive was plugged in It s persistent and near-constant but it stops the second I turn off the hard drive I ve disabled antivirus I ve ran disckchecks I ve formatted none of it makes a difference Does anyone know what would be causing this with separate hard drives connected in completely different ways Any help would be greatly appreciated nbsp
I don't know the answer but will comment about the issue of lag in typing. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and I know when the batteries need replacing because the keyboard behaves exactly like yours and the mouse stops moving the cursor properly. Maybe your issue's connected with the power being drawn when you have the two drives connected. Don't rush out and upgrade your psu though. I only switch on my usb external hard drive for the occasions I need it.
I am building a new system, only part used is the power supply. My motherboard can't detect my hard drive. I tried switching cables but it only detects my dvd drive. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
First make shure the data & power cables are plugged in securely, on both the MB and hard drive. and no there is not a power cable for the hard drive on the MB.
Not sure where to post this so I can move it if necessary.
Started up my laptop today and I tried to open the cd rom/dvd bay and nothing happened. It will open with a pin pressed into the release hole, but not with the button. (Asus u50f)
When I looked in the device manager there was no drive listed. in computer management/storage/disk management there is no drive showing.
I took out the drive it looks ok. Is there anyway to test it or do I need to buy one and try it?
Sounds like u need to replace u'r drive. I am not expert but cd rom and dvd rom do wear out.
Is there any way of sharing hard drives/folder over the internet with the client side need to install anything.
I.e use add network location option in my computer
Or a client programme that is user friendly
The server side will need to run on my computer,
looked at FreeNas thats not an option,
Filezilla looks like it the best option server side of things but uses a client programe.
Im happy to run any programmes/OS's in a VM if that were needed.
Thanks in Advance
I had a new PC so I thought I would do a recovery disk on a separate partition of my parent's disk. Turns out windows wipes out everything regardless of partition when it does that. So now lifelong memories are gone and I'm freaking out! I used EaseUS to make different partitions which were deleted. After I found that the partition I chose stayed the same size but was renamed RECOVERY and it had the recovery data in it. However the rest was "unused" and so I dragged the RECOVERY to make full use of the disk and then I started scanning it deeply with hard drive recovery software. I am now through scanning with my 2nd program now (1st one didn't give me the files I needed) and I'm using RecoverMyFiles. The problem is I'm not really getting back any of the files I had deleted by windows, but I get some stupid windows files which were probably deleted in the recovery process!! PLEASE help me!!! I am desperate. Future hanging in balance thank you.
There are quite a few programs you could try, I have had most success with Recuva by Piriform, but recently this program was said to be excellent by a user,
Obviously it's worthwhile trying both of them.
I burn a fair amount of DVR disks with games, movies, and personal files. The drive works just fine. I can play DVDs and it reads other disk. However, I have one disk that just isn't reading at all. I ran the Windows Fix it says the media is not readable. When I insert the disk it is loading in the My Computer screen, and then makes a load funny sound and just doesn't read the disk. When it finishes, the drive ejects when you click on it and says to insert a disk. I looked at ISObuster and it also picks up nothing. I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure the disk was readable at one time. The disk doesn't appear to have any scratches, cracks, etc. Is there anything I can do to get the disk to be readable and work again? It has unreplaceable personal items. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried using the disk in another machine, preferably a machine that has a newer drive? Is the disc a name brand disk that you know was bought from a reputable store?
My USB drive is enabled. The USB flash drive or any other storage device is recognized when connected to my laptop. But when I click on the drive in windows explorer, it says access denied. The same works fine in other laptops. I have admistror previlages. There is no local group policy set up on Removable storage access. I have searched multiple forums and tried out various options, but still cant connect to my USB drive. The drivers are successfully installed and are the latest. This happens even when I connect my camera or mobile phone. It shows up as 'Removable Disk' in windows explorer, but cant access it. I have given authorization to the drive as well. Please help.
I cloned my failing hard drive (a 160gb) to a new one (500gb). The installation seemed to go smoothly enough (it was my first time though) as it just required me to stay grounded and remove about 4-5 screws. When I loaded the PC up it wouldnt start the first time so I had to a Windows repair, which didn't seem to do anything except now it worked (it said it failed or something). I then had an issue with Windows 7 claiming to not be genuine although for one reason or another that stopped. Now my issue is that I am unable to access the additional memory of my new hard drive, I am able to access the cloned portion but not the rest (about 316gb). Any help would be appreciated, my PC is a Dell Latitude E6400 if that helps.
It is absolutely normal not to see the rest of the free space in the moment. When you clone a drive you create the exact same image of old drive on the new one. This includes the size of the original HDD. However if you go to Disk Management ( type diskmgmt.msc in the search in the start menu and hit enter) you will see that you have one partition of 160GB and the rest of the space will be listed as unallocated. To use it you have two options ? you can create a second partition or you can extend the original one to take all the available space.
To create a new second partition just right-click on the unallocated space and select ?New Simple Volume?. This will starts a wizard to guide you through the rest of the process. First it will ask about the size of the partition. To use all the remaining space just type in the same value you have for Maximum disk space. Click Next.
Then you will get to choose and available drive letter to assign to this partition. Choose one and click Next.
Then you get to the Format partition window. You should choose ?Format volume with the following settings: ?. For the file system is best to leave NTFS. Allocation unit size as default. You can also put a label for the volume here. Then tick the box for ?Perform a Quick Format. ? Click Next. Then Click Finish. And you're done.
If at any point Windows pops up with the following message ?The operation selected will convert the disk to dynamic... are you sure you want to continue? ? click NO as this will most probably make your Windows unbootable and you will have to reinstall it.
If you want to extend the existing partition right-click on 160GB partition and select ?Extend Volume?. It will start the wizard and will only ask about how much space to add. Just select the maximum available space here and click Next, then click Finish. Once done your existing partition will be bigger and you'll be able to use all the space on your new HDD.
Hope that helps.
I have a problem with opening files from my pen drive. Actually I have deleted all my files from pen drive manually and after when I tried to open the pen drive contents its showing an error
"Please insert a disk into drive G:"
Please help me in resolving this problem.
I tried to rename the drive letter going to disk management but still its not working.
Is there any other method where I can repair or correct my pen drive to work.
Try using diskpart to format your flash drive.
Open a command prompt (run as administrator).
Type in diskpart and press enter
Type in list disk and press enter
Type in select disk x (substitute x with the corresponding disk number of your flash drive in the list) and press enter
Type in clean and press enter
Type in create partition primary and press enter
Type in active and press enter
Type in format fs=ntfs label=Kingston_32GB quick and press enter
Type in assign and press enter
Type in exit and press enter
I hope that will fix your problem.
My 320 GB Seagate external hard drive is detected but not showing up in my computer. What should I do?
In cmd> diskpart> list volume it does not show up. (screenshot attached)
In Device Manager it gets detected. (screenshot attached)
In disk management it shows up as 'unallocated'. If I initialize it, will I lose all data on the drive? It had 4 partitions. (screenshot attached)
In My Computer also it does not show up. (screenshot attached)
Even BIOS recognizes it.
What to do? I don't want to lose any data on the drive. If I initialize it in device manager will I lose data?
I was installing window XP on my computer, usually I remove the external drive but this time I did not. The external drive was shown as 4 drives in partition manager during installation. But the installation failed. The next time I was installing windows again, the external drive was shown as 1 single unknown or unrecognized drive. I'm not sure if it was unknown or unrecognized. I'm sure I didn't format it. So what I need to do now? I don't want to lose any data.
Yes, if you initialize it you will 'lose' everything. You will want to try something like Active@Partition Recovery or maybe Easeus Partition Recovery.
My machine is running XP professional. My problem is about the CD/DVD drive. In normal state, when it's empty, it can be opened and closed just as normal. But for most of the CDes or DVDes, one problem will occur.
The problem is, first that CD or DVD will not be read/recognized. Then the CD/DVD drive is no longer available in my computer window like that is not recognized as well. And also in deice manage's list, there isn't any CD/DVD drive item!
In those situations, every time I need to restart the PC one or several times and try to eject the cd drive and put out that CD/DVD and start the machine again. Then the CD drive will return again!
How to fix that problem please?
Hi, It could be the DVD's firmware is out of date or corrupted in some way (unlikely though.)
If the DVD drive shows in 'Device manager' at first boot, with no disc in, try uninstalling it (right click on the drive) then reboot the pc, it should re-discover it.
Also remove both the power plug and the data plug from the back of the DVD drive and plug them back in again just to remake the connections.
Might be worth checking the connections from the ribbons to the motherboard as well.
My Buffalo HD which is actually a WD 500GB Hard drive. I opend it up and connected via SATA adapter but still the problem persists. I checked the drivers. Looked for clicking noise as in dead hard drive but none of those problems seems to be there. Also I tried formatting it but was unable to do so. Can anyone tell me whats the cause? It still may be the head problem but its not clicking as a dead hard drive does. It also seems to be spinning just fine but can't get to the root of the problem. Does anyone knows whats the problem?
Could be some issue on the PCB. Suppose if you were really dedicated to getting your data back you could buy the same drive off eBay or wherever and swap the boards. That may be more difficult to do since Buffalo may not have stuck to WD the whole time OR WD supplied a special series of drives to Buffalo. Check the model numbers to be sure before going that route.
My old hard drive was a sata drive but it failed so I had an old ide 80gb barracuda 7200rpm drive that I wanted to install windows on but when I load the windows installation and goto custom it wont show my drive. My bios detects it its just windows . I tried using diskpart and even formating the drive to ntfs witha complete whip but still no luck .
Perhaps the hard drive's jumper setting is incorrect. Are there any other IDE devices connected on the same cable as the HDD?
I have 2 new external hard discs do show on my computer .They are running but not showing in PC.What to do ? Thank you
I'm not completely certain that I understood your situation. I wonder if it's possible to clarify the question? Otherwise Disk Management is a good place to start looking for a missing HDD.
If the HDD is brand new you might need to initialize it. This is needed if below the disk it says ?Not Initialized?. Right-click on the Disk that says ?Not Initialized? and click ?Initialize Disk?. Then you will have the option to choose between MBR and GPT. If the drive is more than 2 TB you should use GPT, if not you could use MBR as well. Once the Disk is listed as Basic and online right click the unallocated space and click create a ?New Simple Volume?. For the file system choose ?NTFS? if you want to use the HDD on Windows.
Hope that helps.
Quick question and I believe the answer is NO. If you have a PC with one drive where OS is already running and configured, can you add another identical drive and configure RAID 1 without having to reinstall or reformat anything?
Hey there, pioneerx01!
Unfortunately, you can't convert a single drive into a RAID array without data loss. At least one sector will be overwritten, which will cause problems because the file system and partition information will not be correct anymore. This will lead to a lot of annoying notifications and very unpleasant problems.
However, I believe there's a chance to create RAID arrays while keeping the data but I'd strongly advise against it.
The best way to deal with this is the safe way - back up your data and properly create the RAID 1 array.
Hope this helps.

What do you mean by the point #9. Did it really worked well on different computers? Have you replaced cable or anything before connecting it to different computer?
The reason I'm asking it because you've already tried everything we could suspect off for the external hard drive to not work properly.
Instead of connecting it externally, try connecting it directly to the motherboard using SATA/IDE cable and see if it may start properly and allows you to see your data properly.
In worst case, you can take help from the WD support professional or alternatively, can ask for returns if the hard drive is in warranty.
Good luck though!!
I have this flash drive:
And I am afraid it is dead. When I plug it in, 50% of the time, the red light constantly flashes at about 8 flashes a second, or flashes 3-4 times quickly before just shutting off and nothing happens.
If it is in constant flashing mode, I can open my windows explorer and see "Removable disk", however it is slightly transparent, and when I try to open it, it says "Please insert a drive", which leads me to believe the computer detects it, but can't read it. The properties window shows 0 bytes. Is there any hope at all of getting my ~65gb of used data off of this thing at all? Do I have to take it apart and do some soldering? Please help.
Your flash drive probably has a damaged controller. If that data is important, best chance of retrieving your data would be a professional data recovery service. The cost of recovery depends on how extent is the damage of your disk.
So, when I built my PC I installed the OS on a HDD drive with the thoughts that I could later transfer it to SSD,
(did it before using hard drive cloning software to copy the OS drive to a new drive and then once working formatting the old drive.)
however when I started doing some reserch on cloneing software I noticed that windows 7 might not be cloneable (my past experiances are with XP) since there are mixed reviews on each bit of software out there both on Amazon and on the web. sevral report that windows 7 sees the clone as an unlicenced copy and refuses to boot. others say the clone drive misses it's boot file.
can some people advise me on if any of these facts are true or not?
Cloning should work fine if you do it properly with windows 7. It's possible that windows can throw up a licensing issue, but very unlikely. In the event that it does, call Microsoft and they should be able to get it sorted out for you.
As for the bootability of the drive, cloning the drive's data does not necessarily make it bootable, but if you look online you'll see some cloning tutorials that include a section for rewriting the MBR on your SSD to make it the primary bootable drive in case it ends up not booting properly. This isn't hard to do and usually isn't a necessary step.
Also just keep in mind that simply cloning the SSD will probably result in an unaligned drive, so make sure that you get it properly aligned. Some cloning software has an aligning option built into the cloning process that you'll want to select.
So go for it and come back if you're having any issues.
Sorry I must not have sent the last post correctly I am new to this site So I will try again I was getting ready to upgrade to bigger hard drive or drives Before doing that I needed to take the old hard drives out to obtain some information off the labels I did so and while they where out I cleaned the Mounting slots a little better than using just No drives to SATA Power hard air Having done that I re-installed them both When I turned on the power button the button lit up and the fans were running But No Power to SATA hard drives it No Power to SATA hard drives does not seem that the hard drives are getting any power as I can t hear or feel any thing Plus the computer is not booting No Power to SATA hard drives I don t recall unplugging anything other than the two hard drives But I also notice that I have a short cable bundle with two white plugs with three pins and one empty pin hole on the other end a black connection with with five connector slots with one middle on blank That makes me think that I unplugged the power to the hard drive someplace along the ling As I have a wire bundle that has two SATA power connectors that are plugged in But their are three white female plugs marked P P and P which are not connected to anything in that wire bundle I don t know at this point if the power comes through that bundle from the power source Of if I do not have the power plugged into the lope I hope that somebody can help me figure this out and let me know if I burnt out the hard drives and have to start over with my recover disk reloading windows and going from there nbsp
How would I close this post out. Dumb me had the monitor plugged into an unused VGA port. It only took me two and a half days to figure that out. I wanted to let others know to check and see if they have everything plugged in where it should be. Including the VGA or other monitor cables.
Okay, okay, I know that most of you stopped using floppies long ago. But my question is: I was about to buy a Buslink external USB floppy disk drive (brand new, still sealed) from someone on Craigslist, and just wondered if it's a decent brand.
And would have I have by anything extra, other than perhaps a cord? Never done this before.
I'm sure it is fine, the technology in those hasn't changed since about 1992, lol. The only thing that is different is the USB interface. The drive alone should be enough, I don't think USB Floppys needed external power.
Hi, I have a Verbatim Store n' go ex hard drive which used to work perfectly with usb 3.0 and 2.0. A few weeks ago it stopped working with 2.0 and now not even with 3.0. When I plug it in the hard disk starts to rotate and lights up normally, but is never shown on the drive list. The computer doesn't even do the beep sound when a usb device is connected. I tried on 2 different pc's but they show no result.
Any kind of help is greatly appreciated
I hav a Toshiba 1 TB external HDD. It was working fyn till today. Now it is not showing in My Computer or Disk Management. It does make the sound when I connect or disconnect it from the laptop. and the HDD light remains on.
Please advise how to fix this
Go under the Device Manager and uninstall all the USB Controllers then reboot your PC don't connect the 1 TB just yet. Make sure nothing is connect to those ports like a keyboard or mouse otherwise they'll lockup. Once rebooted Windows will rebuild the table for USB Controllers. Now you should be all set. Unless you have some sort of conflict with IRQ or Registry setting. There is a free app called USBDVIEW what you would do is disconnect from all non-disconnected USB devices that are stored on the PC these settings can cause all sort of issues.
My bother had deleted my laptop partition files and folders when attempting to extend my C partition. All my stored partition movies were lost and could not be found in Recycle Bin. Do you know where these partition videos are? I really want to view these videos again. What can I do to rescue them? Thank you for any advice!
Sorry to hear you are experiencing such an issue.
Your data is stilll there somewhere as long as you don't overwrite it. If you save new data, it would rewrite your previous files.
I did some research for you and I found a threat that you might find helpful:
I really hope this works for you!
Is there any difference between software which are used for recovering data from HDD or flash memory drives and SSD? For example, can we use of the apps used for HDD to recover data from SSD too?
I do not see why the HDD programs shouldn't work for SSDs. Maybe @jobeard can weigh in if I am wrong. I would check out this article.
I recently bought a external hard disk of WD (My Passport Ultra) 1TB. It was working fine untill now. Now there is a problem going on. I have used only 656GB of space but it now show that I have only 4GB of storage left. Earlier it was showing 257 GB of space left from 913GB but now it shows the above. I can't understand what is the problem. If anybody could guide me it would an immense help. Thank you.
[email address removed]
Maybe @jobeard could help here. What OS are you running? OS X or Windows?
Hi I have bought a laptop for my daughter its harddrive is 750gb but when I found it it is two hard drives.one initialled OS and the other data how is this supposed to work.regards Martin
I know some manufactures have different ways they produce their setups, but most of the time its a partition and not another hard drive. What it does is store the System Backup / Restore on one partition so that you can reset the laptop to factory settings and the main "hard drive" (usually C prompt) is the partition you use on a daily basis. Unless you physically looked inside the laptop and saw 2 different hard drives, it should be just one hard drive that is split partitions. What is the make and model of this laptop? We can determine what setup you have with that information.
I'm trying to partition my hard drive, when I click shrink, it takes me to the shrinking window and it says:
Total size before shrink: 704749 MB
Size available to shrink: 7185 MB
Enter the amount of space to shrink: 7185 MB
Total size after shrink: 697564 MB
I don't understand how I have so much space, but I can only shrink it 7185. It is an NTFS.
Here's some screenshots
Some files that are read only are preventing you from shrinking beyond a certain point while those files are open.
My suggestion would be to use partitioning software that is bootable. Boot to the disk and shrink your partition without windows running.
There are several freeware apps available to select from. The one I use is Partition Wizard Boot CD.
My hard doesn't show up anymore.when I plug it in I hear 2 beep sounds coming from it and then nothing.any one now what the problem might be.
Probably an internal hardware failure on the drive. Hope you had your data backed up from that drive.
Tried just about everything but I still can't seem to get my external hard drive to show up in my disk management or computer. It say it's installed and ready to use but I don't see it.. only in the device manager and in devices and printers I can see it.. but nowhere else.. I'm working with windows 7 upgraded from windows xp but has be downgraded which was originally windows vista I think.. A friend gave me a computer and I had it upgraded.. can any one help me get my computer and external hard drive straight. Thanks.

The Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive I'm using is from my old laptop it has 4 disks.
After I put it in the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclosure, and connect it to my new laptop it does not show up in 'My Cumputer' and 'Disk Management', but displays in the 'device and printer' section of control pannel.
I also can't eject the hard drive, even when I'm not doing anything to it, the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclusre's blue signal light just keeps flashing for a while then goes off for a sec, then resume flashing again.
My laptop also keeps trying to install the hard drive.
I tried reinstall the hard drive's driver, but that did not solve the problem.
Have you tried using different drive enclosure other than the IT-CEO IT-700?
I have a Dell Precision T which I just purchased off of Ebay Recognized Possible Hard Formation, Second Not Drive Raid It came with gb of ram and gb hard drives installed In quot my computer quot it shows drive quot c quot but not the second drive This computer supports raid configurations but when I received it it had no operating system installed I installed windows ultimate bit This computer has quad core processors and I have been noticing a Possible Raid Formation, Second Hard Drive Not Recognized slower response time lately which leads me to believe it may be in one of the raid modes even though they are supposed to be faster most of the time Possible Raid Formation, Second Hard Drive Not Recognized I went into the bios and the setting it is on is to automatically detect raid configuration in the drives and if not detected the regular mode I read some information about raid setup and cannot find the software quot Intel Matrix Storage Console quot on the computer to help verify or change settings Could this be an extra program like drivers that are downloaded from the Dell website because they don t normally come with a regular windows install If someone is familiar with configuring raid formations could you please help me determine what my system is set on and how to set it properly I would be satisfied to not have raid active as I don t need that kind of constant backup My work is not that important I can back up important files in other ways nbsp
What shows up in the Disk Manager vs the Device manager?
My External hard drive wont open without format I try doing format it gets stuck I try opening computer > mange > disk management it wont open unless I take it out and gets stuck and gives me connecting to virtual disk service
please please help me! im freaking out I need this hard drive to work I need help
If you need this drive because there is data on it, formatting is the last thing you want to do.
Recently a hard drive named OS (X: ) (space inserted so it isn't posted as a smiley face) appeared in my computer. It seems to be identical in memory to my actual hard drive, but is actually empty. What exactly should be done about this?
Not sure off hand but I'd open up Disk Management to see what it says there.
Old Dell computer running Windows XP that was never backed up and I am trying to recover files and photos. I get NTLDR is missing when I boot. I've used Testdisk/Photorec to try to recover my data but when going through the recovered data it seems to be all system files that I know nothing about. I used Ubuntu on the Dell to run Testdisk. I also hooked up the hard disk to my laptop with a hard disk adapter and got the same results.I also ran a NTLDR boot disk but ended up with the same NTLDR is missing message. I dont have a XP recovery disk. Anybody that has had this issue please help!

If you have access to another PC or laptop then you can connect the hard drive in to that machine and get the files you wanted to recover from your hard drive in there.
Hello I have just removed much malware and viruses from a computer with windows vista. It is still running slow from time to time, having problems with freezing on the internet and I thought maybe by defragging it would fix the issue. Yes I have reset firefox many times, scanned many times fully for viruses and malware, removed and reinstalled flash player, etc. I need to first backup the C drive only because the D drive is full of crap. I cannot afford to do anything other than DVD-R to store it on. I am trying to find out how to do this. Is anyone familiar with such a process?
First, run CLEANMGR for each login on the PC and that includes Administrator.
This reduces the amount of data captured to at least active & meaningful.
Second, IMO backup \Users and forget all else
Please help my segate external hard disk 500 gb not working all of the solutions are not working please any solution but not that solution of computer manage please help and replay fast

Man... that sucks. If ALL solutions are not working you are screwed.
Please read the link in my signature and try again.
I have 64bit Win7 Home. My C: boot drive is a 120GB SSD with most of my programs installed on an ordinary HDD, saving the SSD for frequently used stuff.
I bought a duplicate SSD (same brand/size/model) for the purpose of creating a Raid-0 array.
I've backed up everything on my SSD, but how do I restore it once I setup the Raid?
Or create image of the SSD, then apply it to the raid partition.
I am a beginner of hardware. I find two series of SSD to compare, 840 EVO and M500, because the specifications and the prices of them are approximate.
Both of them use SATA 3, so you need to compare with the read speed and the write speed, if you prefer faster one. The sequential read speed of 840 is 540MB/s, and the sequential write speed is 410MB/s. M500 is slower, but the performance of M500 is great as well, its Shock-resistant design makes it more durable than 840. The most important thing of SSD is the controller, 840 uses 3-core Samsung MDX controller, M500 uses Marvell?s latest controller, maybe the second one is better.
This is my poor review, how to compare them with more details, give me your advice.

I have a Western Death Disk Hard After Click of Digital Gig Drive which experienced the Click Of Death Hard Disk After Click of Death while accessing the drive It took out the last gig of the drive The first half on Check Disk works perfectly But when check disk attempted to go through the section where the COD hit it jammed the program and stopped saying it wasn t able to repair the area The drive was used for music storage in an automation system I partitioned the damaged area off so it cannot be used or accessed When the drive was connected to the last system I had it in the system s SMART said to quot back up all data that failure was eminent quot After partitioning off the ripped up area of the platters is it possible to use this drive as a slave only I may be coming off sounding like a mad scientist with this thought But if it s possible at all to continue using this drive I d love to use it for storage only No OS and keep the partitioned area marked off so it s no longer accessed what so ever I m I barking up the wrong tree with this thing or is it still able to work All data which was on it before the damaged area was saved easily The good section still works and saves data without issue Just curious about this If it works I ll use it if not I ll replace it and use it for a paperweight nbsp

I partitioned the damaged area off so it cannot be used or accessed. When the drive was connected to the last system I had it in, the system's SMART said to "back up all data that failure was eminent".Click to expand...
My experience with drives has been exactly as the Smart warning. Once the drive starts to fail, it will not stop deteriorating. I would say the drive is history and should not be trusted further, not even as a slave.

Hello all!!!! My name is John. I am trying to find some help with an issue that arose after I installed a new hard drive in my computer. I started getting a message that stated:
C:\Users\Owner\App Data\Local\Conduit\API Support\API Support.dll
Anyone know how I can repair this? I saved an image of my system before installing the new hard drive and then just downloaded the image to the new hard drive. HELP!!! please!!
You might just need to run some registry cleaners to fix and remove those corrupt registry keys.
My computer recognizes that the hard drive is there as local disk E but wont actually load. I can get it to load on my tv but it wont play my movies. Please help it has a lot of important things on there,
You could try running chkdsk /f in command prompt to check and fix errors on your drive.
I have had a look round the posts but nothing I try stops the internal drive getting accessed.
I have unchecked the CD autorun using TweakUI (this worked for someone else)
I have temp disabled AVG along with BoostSpeed and Team Viewer
The only process running apart from sys idle is svchost.exe (1%)
I hope someone out there manages to work their magic as they did the last time I posted here!
Sounds like the System Index service is running.
When you find that happening, disconnect from the Internet to be sure MS Update is not running or something on your system is phoning home to be sure.
To see all Internet connections from your PC, grab a copy of CurrPorts - - runas admin and you will see everything. Click on the column heading Remote Host Name to get active connections at the top if the list. The menu Options is used to customize the display; here's my list
display Listen, Established, TCP, UDP, IPv6,
display port in The Address,
sort on refresh,
Ask Before Any Action
That last one is interesting; running as admin, you can Close a port or Kill the application with that port.
CurrPorts identifies all ports on the pc (mine number 112 as I write) and if I select all ports with a Remote Address, I see I have 20 connections.
btw: Remote Addresses shown as 127.0.0.1:nnn are local services (like a proxy or AV service), so out of the 20, only two are actually remote - - both HTTP browser connections.
Hello. recently I have been getting the Drive e needs to be formatted before it can be used. However, I have no drive e. there are no flash drives or sd cards plugged in, its a laptop so it has the normal c drive and the system d drive (ie 1 hard drive). I have no dvd drive as I have removed it because it has been causing problems. in disk management it has drive e there, but no name to it and it is in the raw format. any idea as to how to remove this nuisance?
Windows 7 32 bit pro
hp pavilion dv6700 laptop
Just format it, you shouldn't get further prompts. Then you can see if it's another partition on your main HDD or not.
Hi, I have problem with my flash drive. It just won't load, I tried everything, and still nothing.
Here is some pictures that can help.. I think..
Windows installs multiple drivers for this device. This is the 2nd driver (that's failing to install). The first will be listed under USB in Device Manager. By default, Device Manager only displays a device when its connected.
Plug in/remove your device and look for a device appearing/disappearing under USB. It'll probably be a USB Mass Storage device. (Maybe a USB Composite). When you find it, right click it Properties->Details tab. Use the pull down menu to select Hardware IDs. Copy/paste what you see in your next post
Greetings all The DVD RW drive on my HP Pavilion dv series us is not working Please find the relevant details below The drive is Model TS-L N HPMH - I think this is Toshiba It s detected in My Computer as HD-DVD ROM When I try to play a CD DVD the light comes on and spins but then shows quot Please insert drive not as DVD ROM CD working - shown a disk into HD DVD-ROM Drive F quot DVD drive shown as CD ROM - not working The Device Manager detects it DVD drive shown as CD ROM - not working as a CD ROM and obviously the Windows generic driver doesn t work The Device Manager picks it up as an quot Unknown Device quot and is shown as quot NCB XYB QNKX SCSI CdRom Drive quot The driver is not available on the HP site so tried the regedit option I believe I deleted all the strings associated with the driver key Then tried the Microsoft tool which must have installed the generic driver which causes the DVD drive to be recognised as a CD ROM instead I tried the sfc scannow as well and it shows that there are corrupt files which could not be fixed The laptop works well otherwise Please help Where can I find the driver for the drive How can I go about fixing this issue nbsp

I have to say I am a little worried about my hard drive. Often I bought it for the purpose to protect my game videos, and some program files. For a long time, it behaved rightly with my HP windows 7 desktop when directly used. Sometimes ago I decided to let this old PC alone and bought a Macbook pro. The latter has no such a SATA interface for me to input the data from this drive. For the convenience, I borrowed this SATA dock from my brother . ( I have to admit previously I once use another dock to exchange the data . )
My mac just could not recognize my drive as a normal one. I am not sure where the problem lies in. The key is that other drives have no similar issue with this dock. I wonder if anything happen before in the process I handle the data with another dock.
Grateful for any advice.
Yeah. At present I have no such another one to have a try. I will turn to my friend see if any gadget he has to test my drive.
Okay not really very good at this but my laptop stopped working so I took hd out and connected it to anotherlaptop through usb lead it appears in my disk management (although it shows up grey instead of black or blue if that makes sense to anyone) but it wont show in my computer I have a load od family photos on this drive and would really love some help and will send out good karma to all who try to help me many thanks in advance
Hi techmichellenot. When you say it stopped working,is there anything on the screen when you power up, or any indication that the system passed it's POST procedure (Power On Self Test), usually indicated by a beep before Windows itself tries to boot up?. Any error messages seen?. Sounds like you put the drive in an external case that can connect via USB. If there is indeed a problem with the disk drive and it's not a physical problem with the drive (maybe a corrupted Windows boot file, etc),your system may have a Recovery procedure that will reinstall your OS without erasing your data files (called a non destructive OS reinstall) as opposed to a destructive which erases everything and reinstalls the OS. I would check your documentation to see if your laptop has such a procedure.
I have WD 1 TB passport, and all its operations are very very slow.
I cant use it at all. I have all the important documents in it.
Please someone help me out here.
The only thing I can really recommend is to defragment the external HDD using a program such as Defraggler.
If that doesnt help, you may have a virus on the HDD, in that case, I would recommend posting in the malware forums.
Hey Guys. I would like to upgrade my computer. I've got a 40 GB HDD right now. Is it possible to add another 80 GB HDD to my computer? If so, how? Could I use both the HDDs?
Another question. I've got 512 MB RAM right now. And they are of PC2700 type. Is it possible to remove them and add PC3200 type RAM? And while inserting RAM, is it true that we should put it in sets of two? I mean if I want 1 GB RAM, could I put 2x 256 MB and one 512MB or should I put only 4x 256 MB?
A general rule of thumb but not an absolute is, you can put in better RAM. RAM will simply down-clock to the highest settings the motherboard supports. But like I said though, it is not an absolute, as you can still find incompatible RAM.

Before we can answer with a direct answer, we need to know if you are working with IDE and/or SATA ports. I'm certain your machine is IDE, but I'm not certain it has free IDE and/or SATA ports. Short answer is yes you can, it all depends on the availability of port and finding a drive that will connect.

Your machine likely doesn't support Dual Channel Mode. I'm almost positive DDR memory doesn't support Dual Channel, but I'm not going to swear to it. If that is the case then it wouldn't really matter as long as the RAM is compatible with your system. The best way is to stay with RAM you know is compatible or is recommended for your board. Dual Channel though is the main reason, you would want matched RAM modules. With all that said, I personally always like keeping the same speed modules regardless of whether they needed to be matched.
C drive on my computer is almost full, I keep receiving notifications regarding no or less space in C drive. I have Partitioned my hard disk into 3 parts.
C drive is only 25 GB :/
D drive is 80 GB
E is close to 150 GB
I would like to increase my C drive space from 25 GB to 100 GB cutting E drive down . I am unable to do so through disk management. The option Extend Volume is grayed out. Please suggest an alternate way to increase the volume of my C drive. The OS I have is Windows 7 ultimate!!
Thank you in advance.
0. Make sure you have everything you can't afford to lose backed up.
1. Get Easeus Partition Master (the free one for home use)
2. Shrink E
3. Expand D
4. Shrink D
5. Expand C
Partition Master may let you just shrink E and expand C, but if you have a traditional partition layout the steps I listed will have to occur (even if PM hides the middle ones).
Personally, I would do 1 step at a time and reboot between each. This way if something goes wrong your chances of recovering are much greater.
Do you know how to increase my C drive without deleting some important data or programs? In fact, yesterday, when I attempted to install a newly download program, a message popped out and told me there was a low disk space problem. I had also checked my C drive space. There was really 597MB of free space left. So, I just want to increase this drive successfully. Do you how I can do that? Any advice could be greatly appreciated here. Thank you!
Open up My Computer and tell us if there is any available space on another hard drive.
I have an ASUS MeMO Pad 7 inch non HD keep that in mind total different situation. But I cannot Factory Hard Reset it by using any normal button combinations or reset button. I have done a lot of research but have come up empty. The reasoning behind the need to perform factory reset is the number pin to log in was forgotten. Yea, yea I know I should not use it but it happened so non the less any ideas?
So you can't get to the factory reset menu? Holding the power button will turn the tablet off right?
This might help:
I put together a comp. with parts of my brothers old comp. For my brother to have a new 1 ,but he wanted programs like office "which is on his old Hard drive" and my widows vista business that I have doesn't have office . So I thought maybe I could put his old hard drive as a slave drive and he would have all his old programs ,but it say's they won't run on that OS. Is there any way around this or am I better off getting office somewhere and fresh installing it ?His old Comp. was a Dell.
What you want to do can't be done. Has to be installed on that Windows install.
Does he really need "Microsoft Office"? because there are a few pretty solid free office suites out there, just for some of the more complex formatting causes problems sharing with people that use Microsoft Office.
Hi all I have custom built pc and in last month now and then it switches off I believed it to be a faulty psu but now ive notice blue screen couple of times I looked it up and it points to faulty hard drive .also on restart I get few chkdsk .so I thought ok I got spare harddrive ill clone main one on to that and use that but when I plug it in it shows up but making a weird noise, also secured by bit lock,, I put password in and then it dissapears with error something like cannot be specified ...does this mean both hard drives have failed or could it still be psu maybe not giving enough power..thanks in advance.. any more info please ask
A noise coming from the hard drive you replace is faulty,,, it's indicates mechanical failure..you better buy new one...

First see if you can boot your computer from CD. If you can't, then your drive is shot
I have a 500gb external hard drive which, up until a few days ago, was working absolutely fine.
When I would plug it in to my laptop the device was found under 'my computer'.but would not open. Instead when I tried to open it my computer froze and the 'not responding' message was shown, resulting in a forced close of my computer. Now when I attach the hard drive and open 'my computer' the hard drive does not show at all, but 'my computer' still shows the message 'not responding', resulting in a forced close.
I've been on to a couple of forums already and tried the route of right clicking 'my computer', 'manage' and 'disk management'; but the hard drive does not appear there.
I'm at a total loss what to do and would massively appreciate your help as I have backed up company data on to this hard drive.
Thank you in advance!
Hey pcrquals. I would try the drive in another pc to narrow down where the problem is, a problem with the drive itself, or a problem with the pc recognizing the drive, which might be a problem with the USB port(s) or with the USB drivers. Does another USB device like a flashdrive work when plugged into the same port?
I have an external WD hard drive, I accidently removed the network file and folder sharing componet. Now when I go to access my hard drive it tells me that access is denied. I dont want to lose the data. Is there a way to restore this opion and gain access? PLease help. I oringially was trying to limit access to this hard drive.
Google How to Take Ownership for the instructions your version of Windows. Try taking ownership of files/folders on the drive
We have a new Dell Precision laptop but cannot get two of our USB flash drives (both Lexar Jumpdrive SecureII Plus) to work. They work on our other computers. We can connect other USB devices to the new laptop, including an older flash drive. Strangely, if the problem drives are plugged in before the computer starts they will open properly - but I cannot remove them and plug them in again later.
They do beep every so often. USB Mass Storage shows up in Device Manager, with the warning exclamation. Disk Management will briefly show a disk (1 or 2) with "no media"; sometimes it will disappear then reappear for a second or so.
I have checked for USB driver updates, uninstalled and reinstalled USB hubs shown in Device Manager (though I'm plugging directly into the side of the laptop). I do not understand what would cause these drives only to not work with this computer only.
I forgot to mention: the laptop is running Windows 7 Pro.
You saved an old hard drive (or three) from previous computers and now you?d like to get at the data on them. Is there an easy way to access the data without cracking open your current computer and mounting the hard drives inside?
very good. I was trying to explain this to someone. Now I think I will just send then the Web Page.
I have a Sandisk 16GB flash drive that is write protected, cant find any solution!
After trying to format the drive I tried to remove the write protection with diskpart and now the drive wont appear in my computer but is still detected in disk management. Also it keeps coming up as local disk G for some reason.
All suggestions appreciated
Is there a partition for it in Disk Management? You need at least 1 partition on the drive.
I've been having this problem for a few months now. I recently built my own computer, having been on a lap top for a couple of years, and found my old external hard drive. I plugged it in to the new computer, and it said something about needing to be formatted, which I promptly did due to nothing of importance being on it. I went to sleep, and woke up to see that it couldn't be formatted.
This is where my issue begins. It no longer appears in Computer, or Disk Management. Disk Management won't even load if I have the drive plugged in. There seems to be no way at all to format the drive, since Computer, and Disk Management both don't load when the drive is plugged in. Any help?
I have a similar problem. I have an old external hard drive and it wont showed up or open under my computer or disk management. I tried to open it under disk management but there is no way to be found. The files F, G, H, etc are empty. I really appreciate an extra help here since I am not a computer expert. Thank you!!!!
