I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I am on Win 7 32 bit. I have a transcend 8 GB , 2.0 Usb flash drive.

I have formatted the flash drive to ntsc using windoes format tool.

the problem is the speed of moving or copying files to and from the drive is only at 1.5MB/s to 2.5MB/s.

I read articles on the net, and changed the policy to better performance and formatted to ntsc. still no change.

how do i fix it?

I have been using a USB 2.0 Seagate 250GB external hard drive for a number of years and it's been working fine.

My laptop has USB 3.0 ports.

The last couple of weeks it's got really slow (less than a MBs) when transferring a video file.

I checked the hard drive for errors - none were found.
USB drivers are up to date Driver Booster 3 says.
Is there some settings I could try to speed things up?

As far as I know I've not changed anything so I don't know why it's suddenly got so slow.

A:Extremely slow transfer speed to external hard drive

If you right click the drive in Device Manager and look through the Properties you may see an option to either treat the drive as removable or permanent. Removable supposedly you can unplug without ejecting. But it is slow. Permanent supposedly enables write caching. Likely it was set to permanent before.

If nothing seems apropos you can try the old trick of deleting the drivers and rebooting. Plug and play will install the same drivers that were there but will do it "right" somehow. I have seen a lot of problems disappear just by doing this on a particular device. That is why support does it. Anecdotal success rate seems to me around 50%.

Hi Everyone.

I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.

I have tried:

- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.

As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Extremely slow transfer speed from external hard drive

The best option if the external HD offers an eSata port would be to plug the drive in by either an eSata port provided with the case you or by an addon eSata card. Even when backing things up on a drive in a usb enclosure like seeing a full system image made the data transfer rate slows to a crawl.

One example for that was an image made from a 7 laptop to the drive in the external enclosure taking some 3hrs. to finish from a 120gb drive with hardly anything on it and comparing that to an image totally 497gb made to another internal drive on the desktop here only taking about 35min.!

Unfortunately the only other option would be removing the drive from the self contained external casing it came in to install internally like I did with one WD Essentials 500gb model during the beta and RC testing of 7 simply to add in an extra drive. Otherwise you have to suffer with what the firewire bus will allow.

Of course if it did have an eSata port you could also open the side cover on the case while powered down long enough to plug the drive into a port on the board long enough to see everything copied over which would be faster but just a little awkward. Then you would be using the onboard sata controllers.

Unless you mis-typed it, something was wrong with what Belarc found because there's no way a CPU could run at 57.65 GIGA-Hz.

Might I ask what time of day you did that test? In My Opinion, the Internet is like the Interstate. You can't go fast at rush hour.
You should try it at different times of day to see if it changes.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows my download speed has been drastically slow The difference is with most people is that my connectivity is fine the bars are all highlighted in the icon I can easily jump from one page to another w o any connection issues It's just when I download files - no matter how small they might be And it's not just the files - but in my Programs in my computer like my Audio engineering programs I use or loading up as simple as MP files All that takes soooooo much longer to load than before when I had It's extremely annoying and I slow Extremely speed. download thought it'd be the complete opposite since I'm upgrading NOT downgrading I'm running on a Wireless router my friend uses her computer downstairs with her own Router that I'm latched onto Is there anyway I can fix this by updating the driver for the connection speed or something It's really bad for me when I'm working in my engineering programs as it Extremely slow download speed. takes too long to load up my music as well as the download times to download simple files that don't even have that much KB or MB on them Much appreciated if anyone could help me out

A:Extremely slow download speed.

To possibly isolate the source of problem, can your try connecting via Ethernet? Also, you might find it advantageous to try connecting directly to modem via Ethernet. An updated driver for the router might solve the problem. And, so might updating the router's firmware.

There are two things i would recommend. First would be to run Disk Cleanup. You will find that in System Tools. This will remove old coolies, internet temp files and your internet history. Second set your internet History to 0 or 1 day, instead of the default 20 days. You will find that under Internet Options in IE. This will force IE to retrieve a new page each time instead of trying to access a cache page in you temp files. One more thing is I would clear your Rcache. Go to Start> Run> cmd> ipconfig /flushdns

Start by reading this:Slow Computer?, Use this troubleshooting checklistDo you have a desktop computer? If so, when was the last time the innards were cleaned?http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-the-Inside-of-a-ComputerEdit to add: there are other reasons why a computer will run slow.A hardware issue is one. Another one a lot of people don't think about is their firewall and antivirus may not play nice with a system. If you have a security suite, it could possibly be that causing the problem.

Hello all.

Having a bit of a quandry. I have one laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L500-2H, that seems to get ridiculously slow wireless speeds sometimes. Like, slow to the point of not even being able to load webpages. Or taking way too long to do so. Either it cripples along or can't load outright. I run the silly little Windows 7 diagnostic and it says my broadband modem is experiencing connectivity issues. I know this isn't the case because the 6 other computers in my house have no problem connecting, via ethernet or wireless. And sometimes the Toshiba will do exactly what it's supposed to and pull 20 megabits/s on speedtest.net, which is what the others do. The wireless adapter is a Realtek 8191, if that helps.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I finally got my WLAN set up and I'm getting ridiculously slow speed according to LAN Speed Test. When I say ridiculously slow I mean like 10 Mbps slow.

The router and all of the wireless cards are 802.11n. I have an excellent signal on both computers. I've tried two different routers and it made no difference.

My desktop is running Windows 7 Home Premium and my laptop is running Mac OS X 10.6.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Extremely Slow Network Speed

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL and press enter.

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

It probably has a couple of tests. Run the quick one. If it passes that, run the longer one.

SMART isn't entirely reliable. Drives can go bad at any time with no warning.

But you may have healthy drives that are being affected by something else---malware for instance.

Hey Guys I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I've been having I have Windows XP completely up to date and an Agere Systems AC' modem I have done virus malware and spyware scans which all came back clean My problem is that starting about three days ago my Slow Speed. at Extremely Modem Connecting modem would only connect at about Kbps sometimes slower rarely any faster Before this it would connect at Kbps about of the time with no problems and remain connected for the standard hours The new connection speed makes it nearly impossible to browse the Internet It's just too slow for pages to load and I constantly have to reload pages that just stall out If I had the money I'd definitely purchase Modem Connecting at Extremely Slow Speed. high-speed Internet but I don't have the funds right now I brought up the diagnostic tools for the modem and it said that the modem was working properly I tried to update the driver and got the message that said it was up-to-date When I ran a troubleshoot on it it said quot Is your COM port turned off The troubleshooter detected that a COM port may be disabled This may be the cause of the problem Follow the steps below To enable a COM port Open Device Manager in Control Panel Double-click Ports COM amp LPT to expand the list of ports Right-click the port the modem is using and then click Enable If Enable is not listed the COM port is enabled quot The modem is listed as being COM port but when I follow the steps that are listed no COM ports appear on the list only a printer I have no problem connecting to the Internet It connects every time just at the reduced speed It does seem to take longer to connect though When I called my ISP they said everything was working fine on their end and that if I could connect to the Internet than it likely wasn't my computer So the next logical conclusion is it's the phone line right The problem with that though is I've tried connecting from other places in my home with the same results maybe a little faster in the s Kbps I also have two separate lines and have tried them both with the same results At one point yesterday I connected several times in a row at my normal Kbps speed and thought maybe everything had returned to normal so I left it connected but when I came back the download speed had reduced to a crawl My brother who lives with me says that his connection is fine no change in his speed - which must mean it is my computer right The only thing different I've done during that time frame is download a new version of my virus software I use AVG and had to download version Well it didn't download an actual exe file to my HD It used something like a download manager like what Firefox uses to update Anyway everything appeared to be working fine maybe it slowed my browser down a little because of the quot Link Scanner quot it uses but I was still connecting at Kbps with no problem Well after I started losing connection speed I jumped the gun and uninstalled AVG thinking that might be the problem it doesn't appear that it was Now I have no virus protection because my Internet speed is too slow to re-download it and the old exe file for version is about a year out of date and won't run correctly completely because I can't update it with speed I have I'm at loss right now I have no idea what's wrong and so have no clue how to address it Could my modem just be fading Should I buy a new one Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated If you have any questions please ask them It might take me a while to respond because of my speed issue though Thanks a lot in advance I apologize if this issue has already been addressed I wasn't able to really do an effective search with the connection I have

Hello Recently I ve been having problems with my internet connection It has become very slow - around - KB s it used to be - KB s depending on the time of day This started around a week ago when it got very hot in the UK don t know if that has anything to do with it Some background information - my ISP is BT and I m meant to get mb speed slow already but can t be helped due to location out of a possible mb I m using the BT Homehub that the subscription came with which is telling me the broadband is fine However when I plug my older modem router in some Netgear model from last year the internet light glows orange indicating there is something wrong with the connection My connection is a wired connection but I use DLAN power socket to ethernet connecters throughout the house These aren t the cause however as I ve tried my Xbox - which is Extremely Slow Download Speed Browsing are and plugged straight into the modem - and the problem still persists I phoned up BT but we all know how hopeless their support is I have tried plugging it into the main ADSL line which didn t help and even unscrewed the plate and put it into the quot main socket quot inside as the support guy described it which also didn t help They ran a test and Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow said I was getting a KB s download speed Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow - which they acknowledged was extremely slow They also told me there was no problem on their end but this is rather unclear and the person hung up on me during our conversation so I couldn t reach him again I really don t know what to do I d rather save calling them again for a last resort it gets very tedious after a while I m thinking there may be some internal wiring problems but they said there was nothing wrong from their end Anyway thanks in advance and thanks for reading Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow this huge wall of text nbsp

A:Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow

This is almost surely their issue from your description.

Let's do a test. Boot in Safe Mode with Networking, and connect with a wired connection directly to the modem and run the following test.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
DSLReports

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

Hi,

I have 32 bit Windows 7 enterprise edition installed on DELL Inspiron 1525 with 4 GB RAM.
I am facing the issue of extremely slow copying speeds. The copying speed hovers around 4-5 Kbps.

Other XP machines are able to do this real fast. I updated from Vista, believing this problem would've been solved in Windows 7... but this is a big disappointment... for all the hype created.

Is there a solution to this...

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

A:Extremely slow copying speed over the network

Please try to answer as many as these as you can.
Location on network (LAN, other LAN, Internet)
What type of connection between the machines? (both wifi, one wifi other 100mbit)
What type of machine are you copying to? (NAS, Mac, Windows, Linux)
What protocal are you using? (FTP, Samba/Windows share)
By copying do you mean from two network locations? or from your machine to network? or from network to your machine?
how is internet download speeds?

i think this has something to do with the new version of SMB but im not sure... that might of been fixed allready

A:Extremely slow Internet Speed and more issues

Also, I recently installed Malwarebytes Anti Malware, ran a scan and it found one thing and removed it. Below is the log for it. I only recently installed that because my computer starting running really slow, but after I did intall this, it got even worse. I installed it from Cnet. Also, I don't know if this will help or not, but the other day I could not get on the internet at all, I called Verizon tech support, they walked me through troubleshooting and had me enter a long password I had never known about to open up the settings in the VZ Access Manager, then he had me change some of my settings and also told me someone had changed them and that's why I could not access the internet, I explained to him that was impossible since no one uses this but myself and hubby and he knows less about computers than me, plus in order to change those settings, someone would have had to know that Verizon password, so how could that have even happened?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me.

HI All,

If I use the 2 USB ports on the front of my case I get a transfer speed of about 11.3MB/s.
If I use the 4 ports at the back of my case(onboard) then I get a transfer speed of about the same.
If I use the 4 ports connected via PCI(not Express) slot I get a tranfer rate of about 4.9MB/s.
The Card connected to the PCI slot is called a Silicon Image Sil 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver.

As far as I know I have the lastest drivers for my motherboard, USB devices and SATAlink controller.
Optimising external Drives and flash drives for performance doesn't make a difference either.

I have no idea why these transfer speeds are so slow and it's very frustrating.

Hopefully you guys can help.

Thanks in advance!

I've done alot of reading about transfer rate with 2.0 and 3.0. For 2.0 it's 480 MB/s and for 3.0 it's 5 GB/s. Copying a 2GB item from computer to external HHD. Using 3.0 port on my notebook on test 1 it's around 34MB/s and then on test 2 the speed might be 3.57MB/s, and then on test 3, it's around 36MB/s and when the file size get's smaller, the speed starts to slow down. Why can't I get my 5GB/s?

A:usb 3.0 Transfer Speed Very Slow

Your speed is limited by the slowest link in the chain. The external hard drive in the enclosure at best can only do 133MB/s if its IDE. Thats the theoretical maximum, real world speed is more like 100MB/s or even less if its only an ATA-100 drive. You won't even come close to the USB 2 max speed.
EDIT: A SATA drive will be faster but still won't come close to the full USB 3 speed. My SATA 300 drive maxes out at around 150MB/s.

hi all, having a major issue with my SSD, all of a sudden it has terrible write speeds of only 1.5mb/s - I noticed a real slow down on PC, narrowed it down to SSD. Tested with various things, although read speed is ok, the write speed is atrocious. Tried it on both SATA 2 and 3 controllers and is the same, I have tried to delete it and clean using diskpart, recovery from image is taking 15 hours to write 139gb image in acronis, sure it should only take a couple of hours. Any help or advice appreciated please.

A:Extremely Slow Interent/DL speed LAGS/FREEZES please help

In the computer industry, anything sold as an "optimiser" is almost guaranteed to be a scam. My suggestion would be to try to revert your configuration to default as much as possible - uninstall all "optimisers" and utilities promising to enhance your browsing or download speeds.

Also test and see what happens when you boot to [safe mode + net]. If that leads to a substantial increase in performance (back to normal), you could use the "selective startup" option in the MSCONFIG utility to try to find the culprit which slows things down in normal mode.

I've been having a lot of problems trying to get effective file transfers transfer speed Win file slow 7 working between Windows machines in my home network I have a desktop machine running Win bit and a laptop running Win bit also The laptop has a Realtek wireless NIC Mbps My desktop uses a Dlink DWA- NIC Mbps The router is a Linksys WRT N situated in the middle of the house broadcasting both GHz and GHz signals The NIC and the router are both running the most recent firmware The main way I've been testing is by taking a GB file and placing it into the Documents folder on my Win 7 slow file transfer speed desktop and then using Homegroup on the laptop to try and grab the file and put it onto the C drive of the laptop All I've been able to get is KB s Win 7 slow file transfer speed This is with the same NIC and router that I was using on a pair of older WinXP machines just last fall With those two machines which were running on like or year old hardware I was able to transfer that GB file in about and a Win 7 slow file transfer speed half minutes With Windows that same file takes about hours according to Windows I've always killed my attempts after the first hour of waiting for the file to move I've been reading and some people have posted online about McAfee being part of the problem on Vista at least So I told a friend business associate about my problems and he commented he's having the same issues with Windows which is a problem as he's a programmer so often needs to deploy large files to client servers which takes forever now He was using Panda AV however He tried disabling Panda AV and his speed jumped up I tried disabling Resident Shield for AVG Free on both computers and then rebooted both My transfer speed jumped to about KB s Better but nowhere near what it should be like I then tried also disabling Windows Firewall and rebooting with AVG still disabled but couldn't get the speeds any faster Are there any known issues and solutions with Windows and file transfers On a wireless N network it should not be taking this long to move files This is way slower than even G speed It's frustrating as it means I can't effectively use media extenders and if I need to meet a client and need to load files from my main desktop onto my laptop for the meeting it takes forever it's quicker to simply grab a USB stick copy the files from the desktop onto it then bring the stick with me On Windows XP I used to just grab whatever I needed from my shared hard drive and it would be done in seconds or minutes Looking forward to any answers help Thanks Pleb

A:Win 7 slow file transfer speed

There are no such issues with Windows 7, although certain A/V software, third party firewalls, third party networking programs, or uncompatible drivers all seem to cause these sorts of problems.

Most likely it's something you installed that is causing this problem. I have five Homegroup machines which are all different, some are ten years old and I have no such problems. Most likely you will need to uninstall which ever A/V is causing the problem completely to resolve the problem.

My PC is getting extremely slow of late to open web pages and to send attachments to e-mails etc. Last evening I thought it might be my anti virus slowing things down (AVG) so thought I might try a different anti virus (AVAST) to see if that would improve things. Couldn't download AVAST with AVG installed so uninstalled AVG but AVAST still wouldn't load so went back to reinstall AVG. This took over an hour!!!
Speaking of problem to colleague decided to look at transfer speeds, he and I decided to check his transfer speed compared to mine.
When trying to download AVAST for a test his transfer speed was 85KB/sec and mine was 5.3KB/sec!!!!!!! Both of us are using Windows XP SP3 but with different ISP's.
Any suggestions please.

I am trying to automate an FTP file transfer both transfer speed ncftp slow an upload and a download for speed testing purposes ncftp slow transfer speed We have an Remote Desktop connection to a laptop on a remote site which has Filezilla FTP client installed on it We have been periodically moving files back and forth and recording the transfer speed but need to automate the process My first attempt was using Task Scheduler to run the Windows built in FTP client using a bat file which called a txt file for arguments speed bat echo gt gt c ridgecrestspeedlogs txt echo gt gt c ridgecrestspeedlogs txt echo gt gt c ridgecrestspeedlogs txt echo time - date gt gt c ncftp slow transfer speed ridgecrestspeedlogs txt ftp -n -s c info txt IP IP IP IP gt gt c ridgecrestspeedlogs txt int txt user jayuso pass send c linux iso home jayuso pcdtest linux iso get home jayuso pcdtest ubuntu iso c ubuntu iso quit I got this working just fine except that the transfer was really really slow like less than of the speeds I got with Filezilla I did some research and decided it was because the native FTP client doesn t support passive mode and I don t have administrative control over the FTP server I m connecting to so I can t change it So I downloaded ncftp and set to work modifying my batch file to use it But I discovered that even without my script just working with ncftpget and ncftput commands I can get the transfers to work but again it is slower than Filezilla It is much faster than with the built in ftp exe but still only around of what I get with the Filezilla GUI ncftp defaults to passive mode and the default transfer type is binary so I don t think those are the issue The only other difference I can find is the Filezilla sends a quot OPTS UTF ON quot command before the transfer But I believe that has to do with character encoding which shouldn t matter for a binary transfer and anyway the server responds with something saying it s always on anyway Here is some evidence Filezilla log Status Connection established waiting for welcome message Response Welcome to Mighty FTP service Command USER jayuso Response Please specify the password Command PASS Response Login successful Command OPTS UTF ON Response Always in UTF mode Status Connected Status Starting download of home jayuso Ulinux iso Command CWD home jayuso Response Directory successfully changed Command TYPE I Response Switching to Binary mode Command PASV Response Entering Passive Mode Command RETR Ulinux iso Response Opening BINARY mode data connection for Ulinux iso bytes Response Transfer complete Status File transfer successful transferred bytes in seconds this comes out to about MBs ncftp C Documents and Settings IPOPS gt ncftp -u jayuso -p password IP IP NcFTP Jan by Mike Gleason http www NcFTP com contact Resolving IP IP Connecting to IP IP Welcome to Mighty FTP service Logging in Login successful Logging in Logged in to IP IP ncftp home jayuso gt ncftp home jayuso gt get Ulinux iso C Ulinux iso Ulinux iso MB kB s I can t use this as an accurate log of transfer speeds until I can make my script transfer at a normal speed I have just recently taught myself all of this FTP stuff so I could be missing something relatively simple At this point I was thinking of trying a different FTP client like WinSCP or using a PERL script but I d rather get it going with what I have If anyone can help me figure this out I will make them my new god and worship them for all eternity nbsp

Hey guys,

I've a HP Pavilion 14-n061TX Windows 8 notebook with a i5-4200U, 4GB of RAM and 5400RPM hard drive, but my USB 3.0 transfer speed is 'round 15Mb/s. Enormously slow! I heard people say'in 'bout stuffs like it USB 3 transfer 'round 5GB/s which yet USB 2 transfer'round 480Mb/s. But mines running 'bout 300-400 times slower compared to the USB 2 what's more 'bout USB 3!

Hence, I'm here to seek for you precious opinion.

Thanks a lot in advance!

A:Slow USB 3.0 & 2.0 transfer speed on Windows 8

What are transferring too, exact device model number please? A USB stick or a USB hard drive and is the device USB 2.0 or 3.0 that you are connecting? Also is it 15 Mb/s or 15 MB/s? Big difference between the two; 15MB/s is 120Mb/s. The 5Gb/s, not 5GB's, is a theoretical limit not actual transfer speeds, you will get less in real world use and a USB stick will be slower than a USB hard drive for transfer speeds.

Ohai. I've got a Kingston Datatraveler 2.0 USB stick. On other PCs (Both windows 7 and XP), I was getting write speeds of up to 30MB/s, averaging around 22MB/s.

On my currently laptop, I'm only getting around 7MB/s for large files, with the peak at 11MB/s. Small files transfer at around 2MB/s which is unbearable... since on everything else it transfers at least at 10MB/s.

I have checked for driver updates (Windows says its fine), and I've also changed it to 'Optimised for speed', or whatever it is. I also uninstalled the drivers, and let the USB reinstall them just in case something went wrong the first time.

So, any tips on how to get transfer speeds on my USB up? Or is this a hardware issue with power distribution of USB ports/motherboard issues?

A:USB Stick has a slow transfer speed

Windows is not always the best source for driver updates.
Could we have more specific information about the make and model of the laptop for that purpose?

Also, does the laptop use different antivirus / firewall than the other computers in this equation?

A:Slow transfer speed from external HDD

Hi there

It could be the chains of the file are all over the disc rather than in a contiguous piece. I assume that the external HDD is POWERED sufficiently (especially if the file needs a lot of disk head movement to access the pieces of the file).

I'm not sure though that the data transfer speeds that windows explorer / file explorer shows are particularly accurate and they should average out in the end.

Cheers

I am trying to copy files from one Windows 7 PC to another Windows 7 PC using Wi-Fi. I mounted the directory of PC A on PC B and then I am dragging and dropping the file to copy it.
All the PCs on my Home Network are 802.11 N. All the PCs are on the same Homegroup.
PC to PC speed is 1-2MBs but if I drag the same file to my cloud storage it is 80+MBs (these numbers are bases on the More Details in the transfer window)
I tried turning off IPv6 (suggestion from another site)
I tried turning off Remote Differential Compression (suggestion from another thread on this site)
I'm not expecting ultra high speed, but 5MBs would be nice!
Any suggestions?

A:Slow transfer speed over network

Most likely either the NIC drivers on the Windows 7 machine or the firmware of your router could use an update to work with Windows 7.

There are plenty of very recent driver updates for your board in the link below. The realtek network controller dated 11/09 is probably the one you need.

Hi,

My system has two Western Digital WD10EARS 1TB drives specced at 3GB/s. When I was transferring some files between these drives I noticed the speed reported was only between 27MB/s and 70MB/s. I haven't really looked at transfer speed until now and then only because I was copying a lot of files and it seemed to be taking longer than expected.

Does anyone know if this transfer rate is typical or, if not, how I might find out what the bottleneck is?

Hello
My desktop's internet speed is extremely slow, worse than dial-up, downloading a game off steam I get around 6/kbs whereas on a different computer using the same connection I could download up to 700/kbs.

I've tried using an ethernet cable and a wireless router with no different results.
The computer was shipped in the mail but I took it to a geek squad and he reconnected all the loose ends so it could still be a problem but im at a loss.

I did a fresh install of vista so I doubt my cookies could be bogging it down already.
I also don't have McAffe so its not that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop that I bought in 2006 and it runs EXTREMELY slow, whether I am on the Internet or just doing basic tasks in Windows or MS Office. It has Windows XP, some basic software (like MS Office), and only a few files (because the hard drive crashed last year, so I only put a few files back on it, after installing the new hard drive). I know it's relatively old, but is there ANYTHING I can do to increase the speed of the computer, without buying additional memory? Any help I can get with increasing the speed will be greatly appreciated.

Also, I don't know if this is a different issue, but sometimes the laptop seems to get too hot (at the bottom) after being on for too long.

Thanks in advance.

First, make sure your vents are clear of dust. Heat can cause all kinds of issues. Do you have a cooling pad?

Second, have you scanned for infections?

A:USB 3.0 transfer speed slow , pendrive: hp v250w

It depends on how old the drive is. As they get older, their flash memory wears out and they become slower. You could try to use software like KillDisk to reset the drive completely, however it is not guaranteed to provide any increase in performance. Be sure to backup beforehand.

Hi,

I am new to windows 7 and I am experiencing a small network problem. I can only transfer files with 1,3MB/s which is only like 20% of what 56Mbps should teoretically perform.

Here is my setup:
Computer A: Laptop - connected with wireless-n (144 Mbps according to network and sharing center) - win 7 prof 64-bit
Computer B: Desktop - coneected with wireless-b (56 Mbps according to network and sharing center) - win 7 prof 64-bit
Router: Linksys WRT160N V2

I am really disapointed that I can't even get 50 or 75% out of the teoretically speed

A:Slow wireless file transfer speed

There's a little confusion on what the terms mean.

First off, when Windows shows a connection at 144Mbps, it refers to 144 Mega *bits* per second. Notice the small "b": Mbps.

Data transfers however tend to be measured in Mega Bytes per second: MBps - See the big "B"?

Wireless speeds for 802.11g top out at a 54Mbps data rate. But actual throughput is about half that, 25Mbps at best. Convert that to MBps and you get something around 3MBps. This is on a good day, with the wind at you back on every other 2nd Tuesday in leap year.

If you share the wireless connection with other devices (Like another laptop), all bets are off. It can and will be considerably less. Also take into account interference from other wireless routers, other devices like cordless phones in the same band, microwave ovens, etc. and the number goes down even more.

In your case, the bottleneck is Computer B with it's 802.11g connection. Since you already have an 802.11n wireless router and 802.11n on the laptop it's worth it to swap the wireless card on the desktop or just wire it directly to the router if you can. Be advised though, in order to get full speeds on 80.211n the ethernet connection to the router must be Gigabit Ethernet.

A:Slow Transfer Speed hard drive

Do you have the latest drivers for your chipset? Is hard disk DMA enabled?
Windows falls back to PIO mode when DMA is not available (disabled) or too many errors occur (bad cable, bad controller, bad drive).
Uninstall IDE ATA controller from device manager, reboot , then install the newest IDE controller from the motherboard manufacturer.
I believe Seagate has good customer service so they can be also be contacted, if required.

Im getting really slow transfer speeds to external usb hard disk.
Transfering a big file it starts off quite quick and gets up to 5% or so quite quickly.
Then it starts to slow down until it settles at around 5MB/s

Im at a loss i was expecting around 40MB/s maybe on USB 2 ?

My specs are (taken from CPUID)
Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H motherboard
8GB DD2 4-4-4-12 @401Mhz
AMD Phenom II x4 940 @ 3013Mhz

Im at a loss. Is it a driver issue? When connected it shows under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "USB Mass Storage Device"

any ideas please?

A:Slow transfer speed to external USB Hard disk?

For normal external USB 2 HDD I might expect ~30MB/s for a sequential file transfer.
What type of USB HDD are you using?

You could download CrystalDiskMark and post the performance figures.
Download Center - Crystal Dew World

Running the test on another HDD as well would be useful if you can get your hands on one. Might indicate a drive specific issue.

Now since then i've had very bad transfers on some occassions you get the message saying "experiencing a slow connection click here to fine out why."

Usually inicates your behind a firewall.

I Don't have the firewall enabled on My wireless router, i use only Windows XP SP2 built in Firewall.

Does anyone no of a way i can fix MSN/WLM transfers?

You don't have to enable the firewall functionality in the router - it is inherent. You have to forward certain ports to your computer or enable UPnP to allow MSN active file transfers.

A:Slow startup and poor internet transfer speed

Generally it is best to break up your post into separate posts for each problem, but let me take a stab.1. Have you used one of the on-line tests to determine your exact d/l speed?http://www.dslreports.com/toolsIf this tests significantly lower than the speed promised by your provider, you should call its tech support so they can check your connexion.2. There may be several causes for slow booting. One of the most common is that your computer is loading too many unneeded applications when it starts up. There are many applications, such as Spybot Search and Destroy, that list what is being loaded on start up and allows you to delete them. To determine which to delete, look these up at BC's Startup database.A second possible cause is spyware, which can be removed by several good, free applications like Ad-Aware SE.Another possible cause is lack of maintenance. Deleting junk and unneeded files, running scandisk, and defragging should be done on a regular basis.Hope this helps,Regards,John

Frm: Windows 10, Asus Maximus III MoBo. Realtek Gig Network. Windows or Asus mb drivers, not sure.

Through: Linksys gig switch to netgear gig switch

To: Dell R710 with gig cards running Vsphere 6, to a default VM (1 cpu, 2 gigs ram) running CentOS 7.2

using Cygwin to use scp to transfer large (3 gigs or so each) files to a VM. scp -r * to a CIFS volume on the VM.

starts at 40 mb/s and slowly drops to 5 mb/s.

oddly, if I bring up Steam and play Doom II (old Dosbox game) my transfer kicks up to 80 mb/s. Rocksmith only gets to 65 mb/s and Carmageddon Reincarnation gets to 75 mb/s.

If I exit the game entirely, the speed slows back down to 5 mb/s until I start up a game.

I imagine it's something to do with the games taking over the system but it is puzzling.

I have a 500gb kaser storage vault and its usb2 compatable but i only get usb1 transfer speeds. I have sp3 installed, I've updated drivers for the drive, i installed a new usb2 driver, i made sure the usb2 setting in the bios was on, i've uninstalled all my usb devices and restarted my computer with them plugged in, i have an inhanced usb controller but whatever port i plug into it says high speed device plugged into a nonhigh speed port. Im stuck and have nowhere else to turn. any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:500GB Kaser Storage Vault slow transfer speed

Obviously you are plugging it into a USB 2 port on your computer?
Some older computers only had USB2 at the back, and USB1.1 at the front

Actually do this:

Please put your System Specs information in your Profile

If you have a brand name computer (like Dell; HP; or other) please place the Computer name & Model number in your Mobo field of your Profile

Using WideBand achieving about 1.5 Mbps with a speed test. When sending email with file attachment of 3.2MB, the time to send or receive the email w/file attachment takes minutes not seconds. A friend with the same BroadBand service using the same email message w/same attachment can do it in 73 seconds. Is there something I'm missing in settings on my system? Or is this an issue with the mail server(s) and MIME?

Thanks.

A:EMail File Attachment(MIME) transfer speed too slow on WideBand

Well it all depends on what you upload speed is, not your download speed. You likely have 256kpbs or maybe a little higher. That really limits your capability of sending a large attachment quickly.

Have you monitored your system with Windows Task Manager while downloading? If you determine Firefox is causing the problem, try safe mode and/or a new profile. Sometimes settings and/or extensions got corrupted leading to strange behavior. Standard diagnostic - Firefox

I am including details of my PC along with the hijack this log, my system is clean though according to antispyware and virus scans.

I installed 64bit before this 32bit one on another partition of this HDD but cannot boot into it anymore at startup because this PC won't let me select it because it does not detect my keyboard in DOS mode for some weird reason.

A:Snail Speed Pc At Times And Always Slow Internet Speed On Vista Ultimate

I found this helpful information on possible solutions, very familiar with errors on previous Microsoft operating systems. http://www.vandersluijs.nl/content/view/973/96/lang,enI uninstalled one of the suggested updates and so far it is fine, the update was only optional so no security threats. I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

Hello, I just got this x360 Spectre i7 15.6" laptop and I love it, except for the speed at which things load on the browsers. I have high speed internet and ran a speed test and the speed is as it should. I've tried multiple browsers, and even though I have a very strong connection to my high speed internet, it takes forever to open up even a single website. I regularly wait anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes for the site to load. I just got this computer so haven't even saved any files or installed any programs onto it besides anti virus software. How can I resolve this very slow loading time? I'd hate to have to return this computer, but cannot stand to have to deal with these frustrations with a computer I paid $1300 for!! Please help! Katy

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

Hi, welcome to this forum!

Please visit this site to measure the real speed of the connection. When done please post the results here.
Internet providers (who gives you the internet) usually make an offer of x speed internet but they only guarantee you to get much less. So the speed might change up and down sometimes. If the internet is still very slow please read the details of your agreement with the internet provider. But first give us the speed results from that site

Any way to speed up my extremely slow machine? Task Manager always has, for example, "System" at a high % of RAM, always in red zone, but I read online that that's okay, that it just means that what the system isn't working on is referred to as the RAM that isn't being used, but everything is so slow during every step of work, every little step is slow, resulting in too much frustration. If Task Manager has all the answers when it comes to where the RAM is going, is this high % of "System" process really okay? Any way to alleviate any issues? I already googled how to make the system faster which mainly resulted in my uninstalling a lot of unneeded programs but I still don't remember the computer being this slow before Windows 10, for example, even if that may be unrelated.

Recently moved house and had installed my internet today, the exact same setup.

Right now the only difference with this setup is that the router is plugged into my laptop, and if anything, it's closer to my computer than it was in the previous house.

My problem is that it randomly goes slow for short periods of time, or in games it lags like crazy. For example while watching youtube it'll shoot up the loading bar fast and then all of a sudden stop, and go really slowly, then back into fast speed over and over.

What can I do to resolve this?

A:Slow speed, fast speed, slow speed.

Go to speedtest.net and see what your download and upload speeds are. Watching a youtube video will use less bandwidth than a game would.

You could also do a tracert to google.com to see if there are any high response times.

Alright. I have AT&T Express.
Downstream: 384kbps-1.5mpbs is what they say.
I am getting 323 based on their test on their help site. I have no clue why this is happening, I have just started to realize that the internet is slow compared to others.

Modem is a Siemens SpeedStream 4100 (since theirs wireless), connected to a router D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Router
EDIT: My router page (192.168.0.) says that I have a "Max Allowed Download speed" of 384 kbps! Shouldnt it be 1.5mbps??

I dont know if its the settings here..maybe. AT&T says maybe a line problem.

When I d/l a file, I get 40kb/s. That is MESSED UP!

ANY suggestion would be helpful....Ive had this transfer rate for 2 years.
Help.

Hello people!

We've recently installed a new computer with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in our old home lan running only XP computers.

We've detected (and apparently solved) several problems, but one of them still remains: There is no way of efficiently access the files in the Windows 7 computers. In fact it is absolutely unacceptable 8 min. to just open a 250 kb word document!!

We've followed several ideas from other forums (as the one of disabling "Autotunning") but We are still in the same point.

As an additional data: it seems not to be a hardware problem as We can access normally the files within the XP machines from our Windows 7 computer.

Could anyone give us some idea?

A:Extremely low LAN speed sharing XP units.

Well it's me again...

Eventually I found the problem to my LAN's speed... here it is:

As I said I've had a lots of problems seting up my network since I've added this Win 7 machine to it. One of the problems was with the Ethernet cards. The PCs on my network were working with Ethernet cards with capability for 1GB speed. At first it was impossible to connect them to the LAN until I downgraded the speed to 10MB full duplex; almost surely it is the maximun capability of my HUB (the little equipement where all the PCs are in fact interconnected).

Once I had made this change I checked that I could see the other PCS in the LAN, but I had the problem previously described. Curiously In this configuration I could "see" the other PCs from my "Windows Explorer".

Now I have changed the network speed to "10MB Half Duplex" and the speeds turns to be what was expected. Curiosly again, now, I can't "see" the other PCs and I've had to create an Icon to connect to the server explicitely

I understand transfer speeds also depend on the computers I use my USB flash drive on. When seeing specs mentioning read and write speeds, does reading speed determine how fast file is transferring from the computer to USB flash drive, or is that the writing speed? Looks like I can figure what's flash drive-to-computer after I see the answer to my question.

Hello
I have a USB hard drive made by Benq with compliance with USB 2.0.Whenever I move files from one partition of that USB drive to either another partition or to the the C drive which is the primary,I take usually 3 minutes to transfer 350 mb.I hear that USB 2.0 can operate at 100 mb /s.it should only take 4 seconds to transfer 350 mb.The same thing happens when I transfer from the primary drive to the USB.
Do you have any idea on what could be wrong?
Thanks

One more thing. When I restart my computer,I have to disconect the USB drive and reconnect after the computer restarted otherwise the computer doesn't restart.

Hi and welcome

one way to tell if ports are 1.1 or 2 is to open device manger. type device manager in search. Look at the USB section find the 2.0 posts and right click them. you should be able to tell.
transfer speed is not dependent on virtual memory. What is the differnce between when you get good transfer rates and not. Is there some other activity going on like indexing or AV scan? since the pen drive is plugged directly into the port and no cable is involved it must be something in software.

I want to transfer some large files between drives on my system but I think it goes really slow.

I have tried with a 2 317 640KB file and I get a time estimate on approx 19min=1140sec/file size gives approx.

From: WD2000JB (D) to

WD600BB (C) - 2 033KB/sec
WD400BB (F) - 1 170KB/sec

I have no extra controllers.

Is this normal? If not what might be the problem?

In addition, if I want good performance with this setup - how would you recomend me to set the disks up.

I have a Dimension 8300, 3GHz, 512MB, HD as above, 128MB DDR ATI Readon 9800.

A:Transfer speed between HD's

How do you have the drives set up? Better if they are on separate IDE/SATA channels, UDMA enabled and 80 wire cables used for IDE. If you have a HD on the same channel with a CDROM drive then it may run at ATA33 speeds instead of ATA100 or whatever your HDs support. If the source file is badly fragmented then the copying will be slow no matter what.

Also, the Windows time estimate is not a number you should believe. Try copying a 100 megs and time it manually. You can see how much you have copied by looking at the destination folder and refreshing the contents. Or use some other program instead of Windows Explorer a la FAR manager.
