Should I download the old drivers or keep the Windows drivers?

Q: Should I download the old drivers or keep the Windows drivers?

I recently upgraded this old Dell M Vista x laptop to Windows Enterprise x Apparently the sound company for it Sigmatel went out of business before Windows was even released and their latest drivers are some ancient Vista drivers Should I download and install the Sigmatel drivers or continue to use the drivers that come with Windows They seem to be fine so far just seeing if there's any Windows old drivers the download or drivers? the I keep Should other input on this Do you think that the Windows drivers would probably be better based on Should I download the old drivers or keep the Windows drivers? the fact that they're much newer and made to run in regardless of the fact that it wasn't made for my system specifically All I've ever really cared about is what has the best maximum output levels I really hate sound drivers that are very limited in how loud you can make them output My old laptop this M is actually better than my current Origin beast laptop in terms of sound because the sound driver on my new laptop Realtek doesn't allow very much loudness at all on a set of headphones The only reason I ever liked the Sigmatel drivers is because they let you turn up the volume until it's so loud it could blow your ears and your speakers out Or perhaps it's hardware and has nothing to do with the drivers I dunno I'm too stupid Point is drivers that came with my system that aren't designed to work with this OS or go with the Win default drivers

Preferred Solution: Should I download the old drivers or keep the Windows drivers?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Should I download the old drivers or keep the Windows drivers?

There is a saying, "if it's not broke, don't fix it" so I would stick with the working one. You could save the old driver as a backup.

pablo_plr,

If you have not performed the upgrade already, I would recommend that you go ahead and do so. I upgraded a S3-391 notebook that is not eligible and I did not have to download any drivers, it is working fine. It is ultimately up to you though, but Acer will not be posting any drivers since it is not an eligible model.

Hi guys,

I just formatted my PC and installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit but I can't seem to install any drivers, other than the graphics ones. Whenever I try it says "Your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software". I've tried chipset, LAN and USB 3.0 which all have the same result.

I went onto the Asus website and tried downloading from this page here:

Am I doing something dumb here? I have no idea what's going wrong...

Thanks for any help

I remember in Vista almost everyone said not to download drivers from Microsoft Update. But is it now safe in Windows 7? I think it is because I had downloaded a driver from HP and it caused problems. I downloaded a driver from the manufacturer website. It still caused problems. I tried it through Microsoft Update seeing as I had nothing else to lose and no problems. Is it just me or everyone else? I will add a poll to see results.

A:Is it safe to download drivers from Windows Update?

For me, I got problems with them. I always consider that the best drivers are those downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website.

So, my answer is "No."

I need to install a wide range of printers on these systems, but allot of these drivers are only available on Windows Update for these Windows 7 systems, which is making it extremely difficult for me to install these printers.

Is there someplace where I can download all Windows Update printer drivers, or a way to download and extract them myself?

Hi!

I downgraded the Windows OS from Vista to XP for my friend since the Vista was too hard for him to figure out. However, after downgrading the
OS, I also 'lost' the sound drivers. I tried to download the Realtek AC'97
sound drivers, but got the message that Realtek's drivers were not compliant with Microsoft's 'vendor' policies, so I wasn't able to complete
the download. Anyway, now I need to download another sound driver that is compliant with Microsoft's vendor policies. Does anyone know of such drivers? I'm meeting my friend again on Thursday of this week, and I'd like to have the computer working for him by then. Thanks!

Hello, I plan to buy a used genuine copy of Windows 7 with the product key.

I thing is, I read this article about how I won't be able to go online with my modem after a new install:

The myth of driver backups | PCWorld
Basically when I do a fresh install of Windows 7, I will not be able to connect online to update my drivers for my ethernet & display & Windows will not recognize the drivers from a USB stick without an installer either!?

I will have to manually download them from the manufacturers site, but my PC is used & had a lot of off shelf upgrades, it isn't a HP/Dell/Acer PC to just get the driver installer from their website.

How would I know what to download & where?

A:Windows 7 won't go online & won't download drivers after clean install

Yes, just download the drivers installer before reformatting and you'll be able to install those.

This tutorial helps in determining your exact hardware: Speccy - Advanced System Information Tool

Look at the model of the network card, motherboard, chipset, video card, wifi adapter, or any other thing you might have. Then with the manufacturers/models, just google those and download them from each individual website.

The HP/Dell/Ace/whatever brand is just a commercial name. They only take ready parts from the hardware manufacturers, assemble it, infect with crapware and relabel it before selling, but that's all. The drivers themselves will never come from them, directly.

Since I don't like it that much, I plan to format the hard drive (by going into computer-> Right click on C: -> Format) and then to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium on it.After the clean installation procedure, I was wondering if I could simply insert the Dell Drivers and Utilities disc into the optical drive and intall the drivers like I would normally do.Therefore, the real question would be: Will the Windows 8 drivers provided by Dell be compatible with Windows 7?Thank you very much everyone.FatLord

I did find this one "Inspiron 15R SE 7520" If that is your model then the Dell website has Windows 7 64bit drivers and Windows 8 64 bit drivers available for download.

I would use the Windows 7 Drivers for windows 7, Just download them ahead of time and burn them to a CD or store on a flash drive so you will have them handy to use.

I would also have my Antivirus ready to install before I went on the Internet.

3rd point. Windows will prevent you from formatting the drive it is installed on. So you have to do it during the install process.

Good Luck

Also, when you tried installing the first time did you disable your firewall/antivirus? I found if I don't disable my Online Armor (great firewall by the way) I'll have loading/installing issues. Once I install a game and then renable my firewall then things are fine.

Drivers should...be obtained from:

  a.  System manufacturer's website, if laptop or other OEM system (HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.)

  b.  Motherboard CD or component manufacturer's website, if system is self-built.

  c.  The CD which came with the system/component (reflects known working drivers).

The drivers available via Windows Update...should generally NOT be used unless you are totally desperate and cannot find them anywhere else or any other way, IMO.

Hi,
I came across an issue that I find confusing. Whilst trying to install a software to run a mobile USB flash modem, the software pops this message:

*************************************************************
your current device installation settings is configured to prefer drivers from Windows Update over locally installed

do you want to change the settings to prefer locally installed drivers over Windows Update?
**********************************************************

What does it imply if I change my settings to prefer locally installed drivers over windows update drivers?
And can this action be undone and where/how? (I searched my machine but didn't find where this option is)

Greetings This is a general question for a fresh install of Windows on a computer Let's say we just completed the installation and we open up Device Manager we haven't used Windows Update yet Device Manager shows us that there are - let's say quot quot - devices that do not have drivers installed for them If we visit the computer manufacturers website though they'll have - let's say quot quot Windows Installed OEM - General Website Drivers Question Vs Drivers - different drivers to download If we only install the quot quot drivers for the devices that Windows couldn't find drivers for are we hurting our computing performance by not installing the other quot quot drivers that were available on the manufacturers website This is just good to know in general because I've faced this situation with every install of Windows since I began computing General Question - Windows Installed Drivers Vs OEM Website Drivers with Windows But the reason I'm asking now is because the nincompoops at Acer - despite me entering my serial number - still offer me every possible driver for my model including drivers for hardware that's not in my computer Windows - of course - can't identify the hardware so I'm ready to rip out the last little bit of hair on my head Thanks

A:General Question - Windows Installed Drivers Vs OEM Website Drivers

Some manufacturers offer an utility that helps you identify what stuff you have in the laptop, I think Acer did.
You can also try the hardware-detection program this forum has, this tutorial

Also check the driver version, as some manufacturer list multiple driver versions and you only need the latest (usually, otherwise take the last version that works).

Also, installers of these drivers usually look up the hardware IDs of the hardware and if they don't detect anything that could benefit from them will abort installation. Some instead install anyway and you will have some drivers you won't need, but won't cause any issue as again Win7 knows that they don't match any hardware ID, and will leave them alone.

So, you may have noticed that I am talking of Hardware IDs, that are basically each device's own "calling card" integrated in each device, you can identify the hardware by looking up its hardware ID and then searching it on Google to convert that code into a human-readable device model and brand.

Open device manager, right-click on an unknown device, click on "properties", then go in the "details" tab of its properties panel from Device Manager, click on the drop-down menu and select "Hardware IDs". right-click on the codes you get on the text panel below it and select copy, then search the code on Google to identify the device.

To my knowledge, when an OS such as Windows 8.1 is booted, all firmware/bios drivers are replaced by more appropriate OS drivers in the boot drive during start up. I learnt this happens for the latest versions of Windows. Am I right? Do all bios drivers get replaced? Does this happen with the latest versions of OS X as well?

If this is so, then you can discard firmware as suspected of causing problems on a computer that's already booted up. Unless there's a problem that's causing a driver to remain in RAM after boot.

A:Does firmware drivers get completely replaced by OS drivers after boot in OS X and Windows?

I'm using Chrome on a Windows 8.1 computer and for the last few days, new tabs keep opening when I try to click links randomly. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Malwarebytes finds nothing. Adwcleaner only detects Chrome preferences. JRT detects a "Bad Module" that I need to reboot to get rid of, but logs show nothing at all. Rkill did nothing to change these results. Malwarebytes anti-rootkit found nothing. TDSSkiller found nothing.

I tested in IE as well, and the same thing occurs.

There are no suspicious processes, programs or extensions visible to me.

I am trying to install some widcomm bluetooth drivers but everytime I plug in the usb adapter windows install it's own drivers. I tried manually updating the drivers from device manager but it doesn't allow it.
Is ther a way to stop windows from installing the drivers to begin with?

A:Trying to install widcomm drivers. Getting overrun by windows drivers

First. Do not connect the usb device.

Install the drivers for the device, and only connect the device when either prompted to do so, or after the installation is complete.

I've just updated my Acer Notebook to Windows 7. I've installed all the drivers that Acer supplies for Windows 7.

But what about the drivers that are not supplied? Should I install the ones that Acer supplies for Vista or stick with the 'pre-installed' drivers by Windows 7 ... Everything seems to work with the pre-installed ones.

And how do I check wether or not the Intel Turbo Memory is working correctly?

A:Windows 7-drivers or Vista-drivers by Acer

I can only reply to the first question. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Is what I'd suggest. On the second we'll have to have someone more familiar with intel turbo memory. Try Google I did and found a lot of interesting articles on turbo memory. You can draw your own conclusions as to it's effectiveness. Fabe http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=3009

Just in the process of reinstalling my Win7 OS. I have an ATI Radeon HD5750 Graphics Card and when Windows was installing I noticed that it installed drivers for the graphic card. In my previous install I had the Catalyst Control Centre installed but never ever used it for anything that I know of. So my question is, do I need to install the CCC package from the ATI site or are the windows installed drivers just as good. On a similar tack without starting a new thread. Do I need to reinstall the chipset drivers for my Gigabyte MA770T-UD3 Motherboard or are they still installed?.

A:Windows 7 drivers or ATI graphic card drivers?.

If you have an ATI graphics card/chip...some say that you don't need to install CCC.

I have a history of ATI cards/chipsets and I always install the full package because the card/chip works properly and I don't care about the fact that I don't ever use CCC.

Any drivers installed by Windows by default will work...but for optimum use of the graphics function, you probably need to install the drivers provided by the system or motherboard manufacturer.

Anytime an O/S is reinstalled...all previous system files are flushed.  Of course, a clean install fllushes everything.

I have closed down anti-virus / anti malware applications so what's happening now? I could throw the printer and laptop into the street right now!

Can someone help please?
Thank you

Just tried the same on a clean boot, and the download slowly got to 170mb (over 8 mins) and the same message appeared.

Have one question, When I installed Windows 7 the only drivers I have installed were my video and audio which are not part of the motherboard (not onboard). My computer runs fine but 1 game but more or less I never installed any driver for my motherboard. Normally you install the motherboards nforce drivers, raid SATA/IDE drivers etc... Do I need to go back to my motherboard vendor and find updates for windows 7 or just leave it they way it is, or should I install the drivers off the motherboard CD I have here? My mobo doesn't have any windows 7 updates btw there all windowsXP based drivers.

A:windows drivers vs vendor drivers

If you did a boot drive format and install of Win7 you'll need to go to the mobo makers website and download the latest drivers from there. You might also need a BIOS flash, but I hesitate to mention that as only the very experienced should do it. We'll need full system specs to help any further.

Open question, discussion, and somewhat of a problem.

I've recently been having various issues with my pc, among the things I tried to do was update my graphics card driver: found the newest driver crashed madly, and rolled back. It's brought to mind a simple question:

What benefits are there in going for the newer ATI Catalyst drivers compared to the one defaulted by windows but which hasn't updated in 3 years.

Generally what could have changed? Compatablity? If it works it works. Stablity? Performance? Heat management?

Since it takes me 2 hours to download a driver (slow connection) I'm sticking on my w7 default ones: I know they work. It does make me ask though if there is a benefit to upgading after i've got my PC stable again.

A:Windows Drivers vs ATI Catalyst Drivers

newer drivers are made to improve performance and add new features in the graphic control panel and fixes bugs and issues that were in the previous drivers.

Long story short::
My (computer illiterate) sister in Florida bought a used Dell D610 laptop several years ago-no software disks, or anything, except an ac adaptor. Worked fine for several years, but then didn't. So, a geek friend suggested reloading windows (XP Pro, s.p. 3) for her. So, now it has Win XP Pro, s.p.3 but no drivers ("Other devices" in Device manager are all yellow.) Then she gives up and sends it to me. So, I look in Dell Support, under her service tag #, and it shows 74 drivers for that unit, but I can't seem to figure out which of the 74 is needed on this laptop, or how to download only them onto a CD. And, I can't get her unit connected to the internet.

A nice little video on the Dell support site says you can download drivers, but doesn't say exactly how.

A:How to download the drivers I need?

If you contact Dell, you might be able to purchase the necessary discs to reinstall the system...Most manufacturers charge about $20.00 for them, You will need the model number and service tag number from the computer..
As for the drivers, you can d/l them on any computer and burn them to cd or dvd or put them on a flash drive then transfer them to the computer needing them,.

You're very welcome. This is a peer to peer forum.  HP maintains no official presence here. I am not employed by nor do I represent HP, so I can't answer any of your follow on questions. If the device manager does not show any devices in need of drivers, then you don't need to install any drivers. If you have any questions regarding BIOS revisions not matching, and warranty status, you will need to contact HP technical support for the country you live in at the link below. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

How do I install drivers for facebook so I could download my pictures on facebook. The phone is not recognized. Also, how do I save it on my computer. I have a emachine windows 7.

A:how to download drivers

I think you have a few different things going on here. For your phone, you may have to it add it through the control panel dialog. Some phones also come with software as well, which you may want to check on. You shouldn't need to download any drivers to upload photos on Facebook; the site has its own proprietary uploading page. Drivers, in general, can be attained through the specific manufacturer's website based on the hardware. Since you have a prebuilt computer, you may also try the eMachines/Gateway site.

There a sticker probably on your laptop giving a snid = break out the magnifying glass to see it

Go to the Toshiba website and download the drivers from there. Follow the link below, click on Download, select your model according to the dropdown boxes (self explanatory) and then click the red GO button. If not pre-selected, click on the Downloads tab and then refine your search (OS, download type/category) as necessary. Your available downloads will be displayed. I was actually getting ready to post here about my x problem but reading other posts realized that my motherboard drivers were freakishly out of date versions forgot about them last time I was installing a system I dled all new ones installed them all performed a restart and then used newly installed ASUS Suite to update my BIOS Not sure if that's relevant but after that last successful startup there was a bunch on popups asking for promision to launch several application related to the driver update I imagine I agreed to all of those and nothing beyond that happened I did not restart computer again before performing BIOS upgrade BIOS itself seems to work just fine When I attempted to start system with new BIOS my computer restarts about Drivers" Windows install to option. drivers How Recovery "Load using sec after starting animation begins I can only launch it in quot Startup Repair quot mode and it communicates that automatic repair was impossible For those reasons i can't provide that archive with dumps and whatnot Safe Mode isn't working either I'll rewrite problem signature quot System Repair quot provided Problem Event How to install drivers using Windows Recovery "Load Drivers" option. I got a computer from my friend who had windows 2000 for her OS and i installed Windows XP on it. Now it says i need to install the drivers for the Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, SM Bus Controller and Video Controller. I know how to install the drives, but the problem is to know what drives I need for the computer. Is there a way I can find out. One problem though, since I cant connect to the computer on it, I cant run a system check to find out exactly what drives it has.

Any suggestions?????

A:I need to info so I can download drivers, please Help!!

at the startup you'll be able to see what mobo you have. write the model number down and go to the main website of the mobo manufacturer. there you select downloads and it ought to ask you what model you have. then just select drivers and you should be able to find everything

Ok so my WD drive died after 2 years So I bought a Sea gate drive that's "SATA". I have a Gateway gt5404 and I went to gateway.com and tried downloading all the sound drivers none of them work they all say "could not create "c:\cabs" aborting unzipping" or something like that. And i have windows xp. the computer came with vista though. Also i havn't registered xp yet i dont know if that would do anything. I would much appreciate if anyone could help me. Thanks

A:No drivers will download on my new drive

When you say that your new drive is "SATA", what was the WD? Is the new drive installed with XP up and operating?

Also, you have me stumped as to what the sound drivers have to do with the HDD.

You may be trying to download and install Vista drivers, Gateway's website is only aware of the OEM specifications that you computer shipped with, not how it exists in it's current configuration.

The issue is: Dell will not allow the drivers I need to be downloaded on a PC other than the one they are intended for.
The issue has arisen because these drivers are the very ones required to access the internet, I.E. Ethernet Controler, Net Adapter, etc.- So, very simply, I need to transfer them via a flash drive, and Dell is requiring that they verify the PC I need them for with additional software, which is IMPOSSIBLE. I would greatly appreciate your help my friend!

Have an Asus P8Z77-V that I am trying to download drivers for and IE keeps coming up to say it is blocking the site - official Asus one.

The one that did download before this started happening opens out into a myriad of different references none of which I can make is the driver.

Surely it cannot be this difficult -after a week of complete frustration of getting this new build up and running and it still is not right this is the last straw?

Dear ALL
Please help to locate the drivers for two recently purchased bluetooth sticks.

I'm trying to setup bluetooth connection on my Acer netbook, running Windows 7 premium.
I purchased a Bluetooth STACK by Toshiba Version v 5.10.08, After installing the soft from provided CD, I received an notification that its not compatible with the currant version of my Windows.

Following the advise of salesman at computer store, I purchased second adapter, made by DGM Dongle, Blue Soleil. This time installation was self terminated due to incompatibility.

Your help is much appreciated

okay... i work at a computer shop... and i'm capable of getting drivers on my own... but i really dont like looking at the audio chip and running chipset identification tools to get drivers instead of downloading them from the OEM's website... example

go to dells download page i cant type it cause this is my first post but

support . dell . com

go to the drivers page, and try to download drivers for either a dell dimesnion 1100

or a dell xps M1330 (notebook)

i mean some of there drivers work... but i work as a tech in a shop and i'm stressed enough running things alone than to have to worry about not being able to download drivers from dell ... btw dont try calling dell and getting them to resolve anything...

Then 'Reboot....etc.

Cannot access (see) the above file folders.

I am constantly having this problem with my laptop As I plug in and unplug my headphones throughout the day I ve noticed that after a couple times the bass gets really quiet and almost completely drops out Since I have some pretty decent audiophile headphones with really great bass it is super annoying and noticeable nbsp One workaround I have discovered is to go to the audio settings either in Windows or the Dell Audio app and switch the Default Format the thing with -bit Hz in it nbsp to something else play some audio then switch it back nbsp A little word on my setup I have the latest drivers from the Dell download page installed I am running Windows -bit with all the updates I have Waves Maxx audio quot enhancements quot disabled My Default Format is usually set to -bit Hz but the problem eventually happens no matter what I set it to The quot headphone size quot option is set to quot Medium quot but as far as I can tell this option does nothing if I do not have Waves Maxx enabled Switching it also does not fix the problem If I play audio using WASAPI this basically means that the music player takes over the sound card completely and bypasses whatever audio processing Windows and the driver has the problem does not happen nbsp How do I fix this problem It s incredibly annoying and most likely has something to do with the audio driver since this does not happen in Linux and it did not happen when I was running Windows either I have tried installing the generic Realtek HD Audio driver both the auto-installing one from Windows Update and the one from the Realtek site but that driver is unusable because it has no way to turn off Waves Maxx and it constantly keeps turning my volume up all the way nbsp

Hi,

Would anyone please be able to tell me where I locate the setting to enable/disable automatic driver downloads in Windows 7 64 bit?

Rgds

A:Enabling Automatic Drivers Download ?

I copied this from: "windows help and support":
You can check Windows Update at any time to see if it found new drivers and icons for your hardware, especially if you recently installed a new device. If you want to have Windows Update automatically check for the latest drivers and icons, here's how:

Device Installation Settings
Click to open Devices and Printers.
Right-click the name of your computer, and then click Device installation settings.
Click Yes, do this automatically (recommended), and then click Save changes. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
If Yes is already selected, click Cancel to close the dialog box.
