First ssd installation procedure ?

Q: First ssd installation procedure ?

Hi All,
Firstly thanks for reading, I wanted to build a new system some time ago but circumstances have pretty much stopped that for now so I have decided to just update a few things in my old work horse starting with the hard drive, I have with your advice on an old thread purchased a Samsung SSD 840 along with W7 Pro 64bit. I assume I just unplug my existing drives and plug this one into sata 1 and install the OS ?? or do I, is there a procedure I need to be aware of first, I.e. bios settings etc ?
Thanks for any advice as I am a total noob with SSD's, it came with a disk also, do I need this ?
Cheers,
Lee.

Preferred Solution: First ssd installation procedure ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: First ssd installation procedure ?

You've got it right. Just make sure to enable AHCI mode in the BIOS.

And don't ever defrag it haha.

Hello Vale,

Yep, you would do the same as if it was a HDD. One thing to check is to make sure that you have AHCI/SATA enabled in your BIOS for the best performance. This would be the same for any SATA hard drive (HDD/SSD) though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hiya

This is for 4.6b, but it may help:

http://www.sap-img.com/basis/sap-ides-installation-procedure-for-sap-install-on-w2k-server.htm

But read in that link that Oracle 8.1.7 will be supported by SAP Kernel 4.6C only, so not sure if that's what you're running.

For some time now, I don't remember when this started, when there is a slew of updates for Windows, about half of them are installed OK and the rest fail. I then let Windows try again, the updates are downloaded again, and then they install OK. Why do some of these updates fail on the first try?

My laptop, also a Windows 7 sp 1 machine, installs all available updates on the first try.

Thanks.

A:Updates installation procedure

I had similar today on this latest pack of updates. God knows why, I think it offered me 15 in all and 5 failed. On rebooting I searched for updates again and the five that failed were offered again. This time they all installed fine. Would be interested to know why this happened as it nearly gave me a coronary!

Friends: I've got a new Dell laptop that came with bundled McCaffrie (sp?) AV and firewall. I want to install NOD32, and it's my understanding that I have to unistall
the existing AV first. My question is, do I activate the new firewall (Windows) before or after I install NOD32? Thanks in advance for your help; I am obviously new and clueless to computers and security issues. I'd appreciate any tips to reduce potential anxiety levels. Cheers

A:Installation-Unistall Procedure for Nod32/Vista

Hi Tim,

Just uninstall The Mcafee from the Control Panel-Programs and Features and install your new AV. You can have the Windows Firewall active during all of that. Just go to the Security Center in the Control Panel and if it's off then you can activate it.

Boot into System Recovery Options to System Restore to a point before the Updates.

Then install them in small groups starting with the Optional drivers. If a group fails restore and do them singly to pinpoint the Update which is causing the problem, post it up here in our Updates forum.

Is there a way to set this up in a different manner.

That's easy - don't forget your password!

Type Win+R, control userpasswords2. Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".

Hi;
I'm installing a fresh copy of XP Pro on my system, and would like to know the correct sequence to install everything:

Should I install the latest updates (SP3, etc) before I start to install any of my apps, or my video drivers?

I am creating a dual-boot with a second install of XP on the same machine, so there is no rush on getting this done. I want a totally clean install, free from all the install/uninstalls I have done over the last year.

Thanks

FW

A:XP Install procedure

1) There are some XP updates which may require re-installation of a driver (and not just video drivers)

2) From that aspect you may as well install all of XP SP3 plus updates released since SP3 before optional drivers

3) But still doesn't hurt to reinstall any basic drivers the as well

And , of course, make sure all your drivers are the latest release for your hardware

Hello
Dell XPS 8300
I have tried to gently remove that CMOS battery but I cannot get it out. I don't want to press on the board to pry and I don't want to damage the clip as it is the positive piece for continuity.
The manual is of no detailed help. It seems it is something you luckily do, or break.
Has any one confronted this type of clip?
Is looks a bit like a spring. I don't now if I should press on the piece outside of the battery to lift it or with a fingernail pick it up on the battery side where it is held down.
I have tried pushing and pulling to no avail.
Has anyone had any actual experience with this?
All the videos and tutorials have not been of any help.
Thank you
Peter

I've drilled down to C:\user\myPCname\appdata\local\microsoft\windows live mail\accounts so know where things are saved but do I just copy everything there?

I have over 30,000 .eml's (spread throughout 200+ folders in the 'Storage folders\Import folder\Local folders' directory with 6 email accounts) and have tried once to import to TB3 - but only my folder structure was imported (no .eml's). Welcome to SevenForums, Win7rap.

You're on the right track to be thinking about backing everything up before you make any major changes. I typically image my Windows 7 systems about twice a month since it is so easy with the built-in "image" command.
(Note: DriveImage backup is slower, but allows you to look at and do partial restores - http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm )

To backup your Windows Live Mail, I would suggest you look at something like this: KLS Mail Backup - Freeware Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, Firefox backup

Here's a link to a review of KLS also:

I have windows 10 home running well I also do a regular backup of documents & pictures and video not to bothered about the music side of things.I make backups maybe every other week and use macrium to copy c drive. as all my documents/photos are on a second internal hdd the c drive is an ssd with just the o/s.
Now my son is nagging me that I should have aa external hdd connected to my desktop all the time then use a program to do the backups automatic at set times of the day.
I thought yes good idea. But would it be the best option to have an external hdd connected 24/7 to the usb port??. And if that is a good idea what software would I need to do the backups, Well he said there are plenty out there.

So what do you experts think of that idea of my offspring?.
Many thanks.

External HD in an enclosure is not desiged for 24/7 operation. There's not enough air flow to keep the HD cool and will go bad a lot sooner.

I am going to be upgrading my combo firewall/antivirus program (Kaspersky Internet Security). I kmow I have to go to my add/remove programs section in Windows XP to delete the 2009 version first. Am I supposed to be off the internet when I delete the older version? I know I have to restart my computer afterwards.
And I know I am to remain off the internet while downloading my new version from the cd.
I realize Windows will be giving me the urgent, annoying little message balloon that my system is at risk until the download is complete+updated.
I just unplug the cable from my modem to get off the internet entirely as there is no on/off switch.
Does it make a big difference to be on or off the internet when I delete the current version?

A:Best safety procedure?

I would unplug the cable modem before you uninstall it as you will be unprotected until after you install the new version.Kaspersky probably has an uninstall program that would be better to use than the uninstall from add/remove programs. Look in you Kaspersky folder for it and if there is not one there, look on their website for it.I cannot find an uninstall tool for it on their site and they do recommend using the add/remove programs method. If you would rather use the uninstall tool, I found a link to it in one of the pinned topics here. http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2009/0...ware/#more-2878The one for Kaspersky is number eight on the page

I copy set-up HHD (non-OS) to SSD, procedure and picked up a Seagate gb SSD for very reasonable price after rebate and am going to copy the contents of my older HHD Like any good IT proefessional I know the best way is to plan each step and confirm the process peer review So without further ado here's the plan Current drive set up on MB Disk - gb SSD Windows Drive C Disk - hb HHD partitions Drives D E F G Disk - Optical drive Drive Z Plan Connect new drive to Disk Format and create partitions of the same size as drive in Disk Copy entire contents of each partition to the corresponding partition on the new SSD Remove HHD from Disk remove SSD from disk and connect in Disk Will Windows be smart enough to not hose up the drive letters Current Drive Letters on HHD - D E F G Projected SSD Drive letters after fromat and HHD to SSD, set-up and copy procedure (non-OS) partition - H I J K After I disconnect the HHD and plug the SSD into Disk will Windows re-assign HHD to SSD, set-up and copy procedure (non-OS) the drive letters back in sequence Is there a shorter way to do this without buying cloning software that would create the partitions

A:HHD to SSD, set-up and copy procedure (non-OS)

Assuming the current D, E, F, and G are strictly data, I don't see any problem with your plan.

Let Windows assign whatever drive letters it wants to the new partitions on the SSD and then change them back to D, E, F, and G manually after you remove the current 500 GB drive.

I've never run into any drive letter issues worth noting. All I can ever recall having to do is temporarily assigning a letter late in the alphabet and then changing it back.

Hi all,

I'm curious as to why we have to shut down our computers in the normal fashion.

The reason behind my confusion is at the end of the day we got either 1 or 0. Drop the voltage off the non retentive chips, lose your data.

I have a Vista Compaq laptop that I have been trying to kill for months now by loading up the processor with heaps of tasks thereby stalling or almost stalling the computer then pulling out the battery. The laptops still running just as good as new. I do it at least once a day... the experiment continues.

A:Why do we have a shut down procedure

I really like the question. I like it when people challenge what "they" say, because most of the "they" that I have met are complete idiots.

I don't think it's about hardware; it's the software (as in the applications) that get pooched with abnormal shut-downs. I have a regularly recurring error on my machine that says something like "the machine shut-down while some application was still using the registry". I'm thinking that if an app needs to write something to the registry and the machine is suddenly turned off, that might cause a problem the next time.

Anecdotally, I have seen several computers come in and the customer is very hmm let's say "undisciplined" with how they shut down the computer, and freuqently that's the only reason I can come up with in order to explain why they have the problems that they do. I can't PROVE the hard power-offs caused the problems, I just can't find any other explanation besides that. Usually they admit to doing it more than just very occasionally, which indicates to me that they do it all the time as an alternative to waiting for XP to shut down the way it wants.

Also, in case you are interested, I found a freeware program that was designed to do basically what you are doing, only in a "soft-off" fashion, where you click the "turn off" icon and BAM! it's off, no matter how XP and it's application friends scream, wail and claw at the ground. They are drug off rudely by the leg to the large crater in the middle of the kitchen labeled "OFF", whether they wanted to go or not. Shut down times with this program were less than 5 seconds. Can't remember what it was called, but it should not be too difficult to find...

Hi folks After reading a thread which touched on using the Recovery Cosole on an XP install disc I realized that the booting process has always been somewhat of a mystery to me That is how does XP know where to find the quot system volume quot This all leads to me getting a handle on how to fix a system when Procedure Booting Xp it Xp Booting Procedure won t boot properly that spits out the error quot hal dll missing quot or quot insert system disk quot and such misleading tripe I can t Xp Booting Procedure ask just one question because I have several so I think it s best that I tell you what I believe to know and then let you correct me With that said here is how I imagine the nuts and bolts description of how the booting process actually work - Once the BIOS s POST in complete it reads and runs the boot loader from the MBR of the Master disk drive on the first ATA channel IDE or SATA - The boot loader searches the Master disk s primary partitions logical partitions are excluded for the partition that is set active The active partition has the three files ntldr ntdetect com and boot ini Ntldr takes over from the MBR s boot loader and uses ntdect com and bootini to determine which partition on which disk drive the XP OS is located and finishes the booting procedure This partition is called the quot System Volume quot by MS Boot ini specifies which physical drive and which partition XP is on - The System Volume can be either a primary partition or a logical partition How close did I come to getting this right

My database has several tables, forms queries etc. I have a table with Project ID and Date.
I have a form in Datasheet view that uses this table to populate the date field (using Event Procedure "After Update") based on the Project ID field I choose (from lookup).

Problem is when I go to my form, all my rows have the same date, the date that corresponds to Project ID I last updated. If I add a new row, all the date fields for all existing rows changes to the date that corresponds to the new Project ID I added.

How can I make it so the date field is linked only to the Project ID field of it's own row?
tks

Continuous mode Forms cannot have different data in "Unbound" fields in different records.
The only way to do what you want is to have the data to be displayed in the sub form's Recordset, ie include the table that stores the data.
You could include it though in the combo "Displayed" data.

I'm getting an eVGA e-GeForce GTX 285 soon, and I currently have a BFG GeForce 8800 GTX in my system. I usually uninstall the graphics driver I have installed, and then swap the card and install it's new driver. Is there any other "better" way, or is that pretty much the standard procedure?

Is a registry sweep recommended to get rid of any remaining driver components? Do you recommend any programs to do this?

A:What's the BEST procedure for swapping gfx cards?

You have it pritty much down to a tee.
One thing I would do slightly different is to boot into safe mode when removing the drivers.

To get rid of reminents of anything you can use CCleaner but review the results before doing anything.

Remember to remove any control centre that may be installed with the card. You can always reinstall a newer version when installing the new card.

it probably doesn't need to be reset. but it would be a wise idea. also you need to make sure that your curreny BIOS version will support the new CPU, if it doesn't then goto the mobo manufacturer's website and download/flash a new BIOS version onto it.

Hi:

A co-worker has a problem with her Compaq Presario 6410 NX running winXP. Mostly, it will just start the restart procedure (where is says "windows is shutting down") and sometimes when windows has booted up it will restart again. I remember that being a symptom of a virus, but she said her Norton antivirus is up to date and hasn't detected anything. She also replaced her power supply.

What else might cause that?

Thanks for the help.

A:Sudden shut down procedure

It could be any number of different things. Has it always done this, or is it recent? Was there anything done to the computer around the time this started happening?

Go into control panel/administrative tools/event viewer. Look through the logs for any warnings or errors. You may or may not find anything in there.

Otherwise I've found that reinstalling updated hardware drivers for sound, video, modem, etc.... will sometimes fix the problem. A couple machines I've worked on were restarting after a windows update. Deleting the update fixed the problem.

Is the "windows is shutting down" screen he/she is getting the same one you would normally get when shutting down, or is it one with a countdown timer?

HI,

DOes anyone know if there are any benefits to applying all available critical patches to Windows XP SP2 prior to installing SP3, or does SP3 replace everything previously installed anyway? Just wondering if applying all critical patches to SP2 first will mean a 'lighter' SP3 install so the upgrade can be done in more of a staggered way?

Thanks

A:Windows XP SP3 install procedure

Hello,

If you are installing SP3 via Windows update, it will contain what it needs for your system. Usually a lighter download.
If you are installing SP3 via a Full (offline) networking installation version, it will contain fixes already installed on your system , resulting in a larger file download.
If Windows update is showing SP3 to download, then it has already checked suitability for it work without other updates yet, and you can then revisit Windows update afterwards to apply patches that show when SP3 is installed only.

Can one of our experts give me a blow-by-blow sequence of what happens when you logon (to specifically a Win XP computer). Where does the operating system look for the list of users authorized for the computer -- in a specific file or in the registry? And as you select the user (either the administrator by default if there are not multiple users or one specific user), what file contains the settings showing the user privileges for that user, the user name, password if any, etc. I assume this starts off in an "all users" folder or "administrator" folder at the start, then move to the folder for the specific user. If the logon privileges are not in the C:\Documents and Settings folder but have been moved to another drive, for example, what would be the name of the file in that drive that contains the logon data?

Hi CarolinaBill. I'm far from being an expert but you can try this to see what is what and where it is. This is an online facility.

Anyway he said the reason i cannot connect is because my RPC is greyed out and un able to be restarted. How can I change this service so that i can make try to get my self connected to my printer

A:Remote Procedure Call

Go to your Control Panel and open Administrative Tools
Double-click on Services and scroll down

The first RPC is set to Automatic
The second one is set to Manual

For Vista you right-click on the service and select Properties to make changes

I believe it's the same for XP
I don't remember and my XP box is down

Dear All,
As my computer crashed/froze totally - just a blue screen with win logo after startup - I had no other choice but to insert my WinXP CD (genuine) and boot mycomputer from it and perform a windows repair action.
Furthermore, I had to run later, again my sp2 disk.
One big problem: I went to Windows update, but at the stage of installing the activex component it stops (dosent freezed) and thats all. As if WGA is declined.
Once again, the winxp disk is genuine.
I dont recall being requested to validate again.
Your valued advices are much appreciated.

Regards,
Myron

A:Toolbars, Pop Ups, Procedure errors

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.I need to get some reports to get a base to start from so I need you to run these programs first.-DeFogger-Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Hi everyone, today I checked processes in my 2 computers (windows 8.1) and I noticed this process " svchost.exe Service Host: Remote Procedure Call"
what is it?

A:What is remote procedure call?

Hi again puravida  In computer science, a remote procedure call (RPC) is an inter-process communication that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction.[1] That is, the programmer writes essentially the same code whether the subroutine is local to the executing program, or remote. When the software in question uses object-oriented principles, RPC is called remote invocation or remote method invocation (RMI).Many different (often incompatible) technologies have been used to implement the concept.Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_procedure_callMicrosoft Remote Procedure Call (RPC) defines a powerful technology for creating distributed client/server programs. The RPC run-time stubs and libraries manage most of the processes relating to network protocols and communication. This enables you to focus on the details of the application rather than the details of the network.Source: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa378651%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Okay, so a little week ago, i was about to go game some counterstrike, i tried to open Teamspeak but then the message came: *PATH* The specified procedure could not be found. It says that with mostly all my programs, been trying lots of different anti-virus programs (Spyhunter, Antimalware, adwcleaner) nothing.
It keeps saying it, i can open programs through zip files, at least the one i tried.
I tried to make a system restore just in case something would happen. Got the same message.
I use Windows 10

I'd like to start out by thanking this forum for providing a workable platform to create a thread as this since without this I wouldn't of been able to do so Specifically Ability to edit a post made in the distant past to correct typos and or make corrections amp additions using Detailed Lite RT7 procedure Ability to add decent size attachments withing the post without going thru the hassle of uploading to some image server then linking them to the post which doesn't always work It's amazing just how many pieces of software there are out there that have little and or poor documentation Many border on useless ate best What little is shown raises more questions than it answers RT Lite is no exception Showing various screen with little written about them is little help without explaining what each entry is about and the choices available The only explanation I can figure is the author s seem to think all the users are at their level so documentation isn't needed Or they the user figure out the program himself There are a number of similar programs out there from free to now pay They all allow reducing the installation size and to a limited extent very limited with some allow 'tweaking' which Detailed procedure using RT7 Lite to me is the most important After all deleting something usually isn't that hard Getting Windows to look like Win better known as the quot Classic Look quot is another story I have tried many of the others They are fail to meet expectations mostly for their very poor interface specifically one and or lack of tweaking ability which one author doesn't seem to think is important For this program unfortunately support has dropped a few years ago for this program but after literary spending weeks using this I prefer this to the others in spite of it's quirks RT Lite is available thru a few 'free software' sharing sites Softpedia amp MajorGeeks for starters There are two versions both almost identical in appearance and operation v amp v beta Other than a few changes in the order of some of the selections I really don't see much of a difference Other than a copy of a Windows ISO with SP integrated the only additional programs needed are quot Unlocker quot to manually delete specific folders within the extracted O S installer and your un-packing progarm I use -Zip My goals are to reduce the unwanted M bloat and tweak the O S as much as possible to return it back to the Classic quot look Win o XP Pro Classic Some have reduce the install down to around MB but I feel that is pushing it I have gotten it down to around GB which isn't that bad This is without those security updates that bring ti back up to around GB I don't want or need all of these 'gimmicks' that M insists coming out with to sell you a new O S like amp The items checked for change addition or deletion are ones I did some were changed from when those screen shots were taken This will depend on just what you do with your PC I now do is try to find as many quot portable' application versions as I can that I use Create folders for them and add all of those to a single folder that I just C amp P in the root of 'C' just like they are under quot Program Files quot The only annoying part is creating separate Start Menu shortcuts for each program Portable programs are not 'installed' for the most part thou a few do add files in the user directory You run them as usual configure them as usual then you can save them for further installs or in other PC's without all the hassle of starting from scratch with ones that don't have separate config files

A:Detailed procedure using RT7 Lite

Software is only ones & zeros. You can't 'break' anything. If something doesn't work, scrap that version and try again. You will not get it right the first time unless you have no expectations.

You can't tweak everything, most you will have to do after the modified O/S is installed. It's a trial and error (mostly error) process.

1. I find it best to copy an extracted (uppacked) Win7 w/sp1 ISO to a SSD (if you have one). You can use the ISO, but it takes longer.

2. Be sure you have a dedicated original extracted copy of W7 sp1 in a safe place. Do not use that for your source since it will be overwritten.

3. Place the needed RT7 folders in the root of that drive on a partition w/o a O/S installed.

4. The more you call on the program to do, the longer the process. Adding updates (I had 106 security only updates) at least doubles the time.

Note: All of these attachments can be opened in a separate tab and saved to be printed out for your convenience.

A:What is the procedure to reinstall in the future?

Once you have upgraded to Windows 10 and activated, you are entitled to reinstall the Win 10 into the same computer as often as you want , whenever you want.
What you need to do then is to create a bootable Windows 10 media ( DVD or USB ) which you will use for re-installing.
For now the most current Windows 10 is 10586.
You can use one of the following links to download the ISO file, then burn the iso file to a bootable media,

Hello.

Got that issues since few days. System restarting itself. I have checked windows logs and found that RPC is doing that for some reason. So i have tried to change the options in Remote Procedure Call in control panel. But all the options are grayed and and i can't do that, even when im administrator.

I remember i did that in Win Xp and Vista but cant do it on Win 7 x32. I wanted to change option, so he doing nothing if he find any issues. Restarting system is so annoying.

Any advice is appreciated.

I am running Windows XP Ver 5.1.2600 (I think) and keep getting the error message "The procedure entry point strcat_s could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll."

I've been told to use the startup disk and press the R for recovery but nothing works when I press the R. I can open the task manager and actually pull up files but I can't save them or do anything with them.

I can only open task manager and can open files by going to new task, browse and find what I need. However, I can't save anything to a drive or do anything with the files other than view them.

Any other ideas how I can get my old computer running again so I can retrieve some of my files?

Hi,

Did you tried the command sfc /scannow. Open a console an type sfc /scannow. Usually, you will need the Windows XP CD to repair the files.

Thanks for reading.

I have asus p5gl-mx board. I am going to replace cpu with 2.8 ghz, P4. Previously cpu of 3.0 was installed. When I installed cpu of 2.8 ghz, there is no display. Cpu fan is running. Also board light is on. Ram is 256 mb ddr1. In board manual it says that this board supports cpu of 2.8 ghz. Shall I update bios? If yes, what is the procedure. I have downloaded bios update from website.

Pl help.

A:Bios update procedure

sara,
Since I was wanting to look into a procedure for asus motherboards, then hang in there and I'll see what I come up with.

I have one procedure, but that is for an asus netbook.

I've always updated the bios on any computer I've owned, since an up-to-date bios can avoid many problems.

Mobo manufacturers release a bios update at great cost to the manufacturer.

Following a bios update procedure correctly can be of great benefit.

Nowadays, a bios is more robust than 5-15 years ago and even if you goof, then you can reset the bios and recover from a disaster.

ASUS seems to have standardized their bios update procedure for their newer boards.

I will post back in a maximum of 24 hours.

Hi Everyone Background My parents recently purchased broadband DSL for their computer and I ve been trying to keep an eye on their security and help them keep the system safe They were using AVG-free antivirus windows defender and the Comodo firewall Just for on demand scanners I also installed superantispyware malewarebytes a-squared and spybot search and destroy for them They do not know much about computers and do not seem to have much interest in learning dealing Procedure for with Rootkits anything beyond surfing and email I think the only time the system is scanned is when I go over and do it I noticed their internet connection was great at some times kB sec and then it would slow down horribly to to KB sec at other times I read an article online that said if you Procedure for dealing with Rootkits type run cmd and then enter quot netstat quot into the command line you should not have too many connections showing and if you have a long list it could be a trojan I found that the connection list was long about or more and decided to scan with trendmicro housecall The scan found instances of a rootkit infection I removed the rootkit via trendmicro and then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira Anti-Vir instead becasue I like it better and it at least has a very basic rootkit scan Anti-vir found nothing after a complete scan It looked like the rootkit instances were in the temporary internet files but they had names that made me think they came in via email there was quot FW quot in the names and the names just sounded like they came from the subject lines of email messages They get email messages from many people they know and they have many attachments The multiple connections seemed to persist even after removing the rootkits The main problem is that they do online banking with the computer but nobody wants their computer privacy compromised and personal files accessed by strangers Main question Nowadays can rootkits be reliably scanned for and removed or should I wipe the hard drive re-install windows and start over Other than the fact that it s a pain the problem with that is re-infection If I must wipe the system after re-installing windows and the basic security programs I was thinking of installing sandboxie for them so they would have extra protection while surfing It s an easy program to learn but they just do not seem to have much interest in learning about new programs or anything As far as email I would probably have them stop using outlook express and just use a gmail account That way they could access the gmail account with their browser sandboxed and this would provide some protection I would instruct them to delete the sandbox prior to any online banking or anything that requires a password The other option I thought of is to set up a virtual machine with Microsoft virtual machine and they could use the virtual machine for general email and surfing amp use their regular email account That way any malware picked up in the virtual machine would most likely stay there They would use the quot real computer quot or host computer for any online banking or anything critical I would appreciate any feedback anyone might have I m also interested in hearing how most people presently handle rootkit infections do you scan and remove then hope there is nothing else there or do you wipe and reinstall windows Thanks John nbsp

A:Procedure for dealing with Rootkits

I'm not going to answer all your questions, but have a couple suggestions.

SafeSpace is probably easier to use than SandboxIE and launches all found browsers virtually unless turned off. It also blocks Windows, ProgramData and Program Files directories from changes while it is running. Check it out.

The malware people will tell you more about rootkits, but their basic plan is to install drivers that take over Windows before it is running to make themselves invisible and hide their services and drivers. Scanning offline, and even examining the registry if you are familiar with the services section, shows a whole different world when Windows is not running and you have a rootkit. Consider offline scans.

Probly a stupid question. Alot of i times when i press the shutdown button i realise i forgot to do some certain things (like checking my e-mail and stuff liek that). It takes, for me, just to much time to restart my pc for those things.

So my question: is it possible to end this "pc shutdown sequence"? I figured this might be possible, as Windows end these windows programs one by one, and I simply has to restart these. On the other hand, I dont think this is that easy.

So, someone knows if this is possible?

A:Stop shutdown procedure

It is indeed possible, if you're fast enough. Here's what to do:1. Open the Run... dialog box (either by clicking the Start menu and then Run... or by holding down the Windows key and pressing R)2. In the Run... gialog box, type shutdown -a then press Enter (or click OK) to abort the shutdown process.

Is it possible to add a procedure point to a DLL? If so, how? I need to add the procedure point "GetMonitorInfoA" to my User32.dll.

Which presents another problem. The User32.dll is in use by Windows NT. I have looked at work arounds for replacing the file all together, but have been unsuccessful. Maybe I was using Regedt32.exe wrong, or maybe it just won't work. I have no clue which it is if either.

If anyone knows how to do this, PLEASE let me know. I have been battling this for a week straight. (7 hours a day... )

Also, I can email my DLL to you if necessary.

PLEASE!!??

Good day. Can somebody please give me the exact procedures to format my laptop that has windows XP. I need to install windows 98 because it's an older laptop and it can't handle XP too sufficiently. Please also tell me everthing i need for the installation process. Thank you. (Note: I tried formatting XP by right clicking on the C:/ hard drive icon and then selecting the format option but it wouldn't let me format it) Thanks!!!

A:Formatting Windows XP Procedure

You probably should have posted this on the Win 98 forum, however:

You cannot format the drive in use while in windows. IOW, Windows won't delete itself.
Does your laptop have a floppy drive and do you have a full install version of 98 or an upgrade CD?

Hi,

I want to write my own login program. So that I can force the user to supply additional passwords in order to login to the system. Do you know if this is possible. I have seen this in the omni program for using fingerprints as passwords.

/Daniel

A:Change the login procedure

Hi Daniel,

Without a 3rd party program like the one you mentioned, this is about all you can do with the logon in Vista as far as I know:

1. Set it to where the user must enter their Username and Password, not just their password.

Logon with Username and Password

2. You can include a logon Title and Message screen before the user logon screen.

Logon Title and Text Message

I hope this helps,
Shawn

What does the syntax look like in a VBScript function to call a stored procedure which will write to a hit counter that never appears on the page?

In ASP I would do something like

<96adoCon.Open "driver={SQL Server};server=enterprise;uid=xxxx;pwd=xxxxx;database=ServerName"96>

followed by

<96VisitRS.Open "sp_Visit '" & Session("pageID") & "'",adocon96>

I want to call an onClick event function that does this in VBScript but I do not know how to write that function in VB.

Hi,

How can I know if an SQL command (INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE) was issued by
an Application or issued from ISQL utility?

Or what is Ingres DB System variable that holds this information?

I want to add this checking in a Database Procedure.

Thanks in advance,
Red

A:Ingres Database Procedure

I'm trying to make sure that all the updates are coming from our applications (which
perfroms complex computations and checking for company rules which is not practical
to include in database procedures and also to unload DB server for such processes).

Do you have any idea or work around regarding this matter?

Thanks,

I know my title is confusing but I couldn't think of a better one for my question So I have an application I am building that allows us to track projects and it handle I in procedure the in code? the Should or SQL the associated tasks that is linked to a MS SQL database The question I have is that my tasks table has some columns that are FK and can be null when my application sends the data to the database to be stored sometimes those columns are null and sometimes they are not Should I handle it in the SQL procedure or in the code? The trouble is that the application doesn't want to send a null value it wants to send instead which causes errors on the SQL side as that is not a valid FK So would it be better to handle this in the code somehow or Should I handle it in the SQL procedure or in the code? to handle it in the SQL procedure by testing the value of the parameter and assigning it to 'null' if the value is I know how to do it both ways I am just wandering which would be the better way

My apologies if this topic is available as I was unable to find it in my searches.

I would like to uninstall and reinstall OS.

As I have not attempted to do so in the past, I would welcome some direction regarding the safe backup of the contents of my HDD including the re-installation of the backed up material following re-installation of the O.S.
Of particular importance is the acceptable practice of and reasons for allocating individual batches of windows software into the various partitions i.e. Boot files etc.
