taskbar icons

Q: taskbar icons

has anyone found a way to change the icons of apps that have been pinned to the start menu other than reshacking the exe?

Relevancy 100%
Preferred Solution: taskbar icons

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Garbanzo,

You could create a shortcut of the exe file, then change the icon of the shortcut and pin that shortcut to the Start Menu.

Hope this helps,

Not sure if this is an issue, but awhile ago whenever I use the FN key to control the volume or
brightness on my laptop, they would always show as a big white circle spinning as I control it.
But now it's just a blue box with a yellow slider.

Anyone knows what this means? I'm using an ASUS X54C notebook with Windows 7 btw.

A:FN key icons are different

Possibly you made changes to, say, themes or other user experience categories ? It's sometimes fun to change something about the user interface, but in Win 7 especially, all sorts of things are inter-related. And that's before we take into account changes to driver software, and MS system updates.

Using function keys to control volume I presume must be a special portable feature, and must therefore be part of the portable's driver set. Any replacement of the hardware drivers will affect that, and that would include Win 7 having the arrogance to replace the keyboard driver without reference to you.

So good luck with that. I'd suggest you reset the user interface to default, but maybe you won't know what that is anyway.......and neither would I

I have two SanDisk flash drives (8 & 32 GB) and a 32 GB SanDisk Micro SD card and, as of yesterday, the folder icons have changed to shortcut icons that refer to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe F/c "start %cd%\sony.exe && %windir%\explorer %cd%\Extras". 'Extras' is just one of the folders on my 8GB flash drive. My files are still on all of my devices, but I cannot access them. After seeing the C prompt statement, I figured I am way out of my league. What do I need to do to restore my folder icons and directly access my files again?

My thanks in advance for your help.

T Smith

A:Folder icons changed to shortcuts

The files have been corrupted, so I don't think they will be recoverable. Always use SD flash drives for temporary storage, and back up important files also on a DVD or on a second standard hard drive

i was on my laptop last night trying to get rid of av security suite it's a virus that blocks helpful things on your computer and tries to get you to buy it's product, i was on firefox and it said "this program seems to be unresponsive, end program?" and i clicked yes then my computer restarted and there was nothing but the wall paper on it and i can't get task manager up because the AV security suite is blocking it, anyone have a solution?

A:Laptop goes blank no taskbar no icons

Where we see this most frequently is in peculiar hard drive failures...
Did it work normally when you rebooted in <SAFE MODE>?
In <SAFE MODE> you should be able to remove AV, then see if it will boot normally, then defragment, and scan your system with a variety of antispyware and antivirus downloads.
You can always reinstall AV later.

I recently cloned my Windows XP Pro with SP from a failing Hitachi harddrive to a new Samsung HD in my Tecra S Everything went smooth and the system immediately recognized the new harddrive The transfer was perfect Then for some unknown reason about a week later I decided to upgrade to Service etc, load to forever Icons, take Pack I ve read where they got the kinks out Hmmmm Anyway the first reboot afterwards loaded Icons, etc, take forever to load my background but that was it No Icons No Task Bar No Start Menu was displayed I had to do a hard shut-down and when I rebooted all screens loaded fine with all icons etc Today I turned on the laptop and it loaded to the Windows screen and then my desktop with no icons etc to be seen I shut down via power button and tried again The same thing Eventually the Icons etc loaded How do I rectify this problem The boot up time is definitly quicker since upgrading from megs of RAM to Gigs and going from a rpm HD to a rpm It is only when I get to the desktop that a full load fails to happen nbsp

A:Icons, etc, take forever to load

Uninstall or otherwise remove the service pack.
Defragment the drive.
Use RegEdit by Juoni Viourno to clean up the drive and get rid of any suspect registry lines. (Find on
Reinstall Service Pack 3 once more, watching carefully to assure that everthing was installed, and the Service Pack was fully installed. As you probably know, with your experience, this darned thing can take forever... Sometimes it is still running processes and install bits, when you think it has finished.
Regardless of whether you are sure you did it right the first time, shut down, then do a cold boot.
Reinstall Service Pack 3 and give it up to an hour to finish.
Good luck. Let us know if this works. It worked for me.

A few weeks ago we downloaded an updated driver for our video card so that my son could play a particular game. Now everything on our computer is larger in size: our desktop icons, our internet pages, our office software, etc. Is there an easy way to return everything back to it's original size or I am going to have to do it program by program?

Right click an open area of the desktop, Left click properties, left click settings, move the screen resolution slider to the right a couple spots and apply. That's how you adjust that.

Chances are windows is managing the wireless and as such the icon wont be shown (they are usually shown if the wireless's own software is managing the connection.) i wouldnt worry as there is no need to do anything with it as long as the wifi is working

I know I posted a thread earlier but I'm desperate right now. I recently had a problem with my display freezing everything except for the mouse. I did a scan during Safe Mode and removed some medium level trojans. After recieving a message regarding a dll file that apparently doesn't exist, I did a repair install. I went through all the activation except for the final one. Whenever I try to log into my account the mouse is moveable but there are no icons or anything for that matter loading. I tried going to Safe Mode but I can't because my XP isn't "fully activated". HELP

Safe mode, normally works, even if you haven't activated

In Normal mode, if you press CTRL + ALT + DEL keys on the keyboard do you see Task Manager?

If, Yes. Then click on File->Run->Explorer.exe->ok

Do the icons now show?

If, Yes. then download this tool:
This utility checks for the correct GINA value in the Registry and will allow you to restore it, if its incorrect.

I was effin around with stuff, and I found out I could change a few desktop icons based off of what was saved in my system32\shell32.dll files.

I was wondering if there was a way to get/make/download icons and replace certain desktop icons.

For instance, I found a Portal logo, and I wanted to change Mozilla's icon to that icon. But it claims that there are no Icon files in it.

What can I do to sorta...force my way?

right click on the shortcut>properties>change icon. if you didn't know

and there are many programs around the internet that will change a regular image into a .ico icon file.

Yes I think this is a hard drive issue too. Check to see how much space you have left on it. Go to My computer and right-click on the C drive icon. Click Properties... Also, you might consider checking the hard drive with a utility like Seatools from Seagate. IBM notebook drives are noted for their high failure rates...

Sounds like you don't have nVidia drivers for the card. You must try to download it from nVidia website or install it from the cd given

. For the chunky stuffs, right click in desktop, settings tab, and choose desired screen resolution. If the screen resolution is only stuck in 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 it means you really need to reinstall your nVidia driver.

A:IE Explorer freezes desktop icons

Slow Internet Explorer?

Do you have the option ticked, in Internet Explorer, 'Tools', 'Internet Options', General Tab, 'Delete browsing history on exit' ?
Also do you use the program 'CCleaner' ? It does a good job of clearing out the files that you collect while browsing. These can slow down I.E to a crawl. Also it's better not to have too many 'add-on's'. To test this, type into your 'search' bar, (from Start), 'Internet Explorer'. In the list, choose the second option down, 'Internet Explorer-no add-ons'. If that is faster, then you can go to 'Tools', 'Manage add-ons',
then clear some of them out. Hope that helps.

I used Ctrl-Alt- Del to bring up the Task Manager but was unable to see how to reboot it using the Task Manager. I now can't remember what I did, but I got to a blueish screen giving me options on whether I wanted it to hibernate, switch user, etc, etc. I clicked on one of them, clicked my name & it rebooted.
I don't know how to find the Event viewer if that is what I needed to look at, so , what could of caused this? I know his laptop aint the best, but I'm glad it works as good as it does.

A:Taskbar mysteriously disappeared

That resembles Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) crash. Though when I have seen them in the past Windows has always recovered or rebooted on its own. I've never been kicked out to the login screen. That could be due to the fact I never see the login screen, my PC boots straight to desktop.

If someone uses the login screen, an explorer.exe crash might recover and start back at the login screen. But I couldn't say for sure if this is what would happen.

I've even had instances where Explorer seemed to freeze. I still had mouse control but nothing worked from the taskbar. Starting task manager and killing explorer.exe, would manually initiate the recovery. The taskbar will disappear and then reappear. During these instances are the only time, I have been able to kill the explorer.exe process, without Windows shutting down.

All the programs I found are once that restore icons to saved settings, but that's not what I want. Is there a program that can easily be installed to lock the icons in place so students cannot move them inadvertently, or rename them (on purpose of course )?

They are using Windows XP.

Is there a way to see a history of it so I can figure out when it was changed and therefore who the culprit is?

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here. Install it. Make sure it is up to date with the latest definitions (it should be if you install it immediately after you download it). Run a full scan overnight. If no results come up, you may have to run a disk clean up and defragmentation. Download and run CCleaner. After that cleanup is complete, run a defragmentation using these directions:

If that doesnt work, you may have to reinstall the OS (clean install). My old XP machine took forever to load because I loaded it up with a bunch of junk and barely had any free space and RAM.

So, pretty self explanatory, I have this super bizarre problem, whenever I have my taskbar set to small icons in the properties, the taskbar icons are all wrong, for example, the Windows Task Manager will show up as Google Chrome (application seem to take a fancy for that icon) or Adobe Lightroom will show up as the Windows Picture Viewer. I have searched everywhere, and all I can find are cases of missing icons, which is not my problem. Perhaps this is linked to the other problem I am having. (Half of monitor is out of sync.)

Which group(s) are wrong when small? Also, can you right click a wrong icon and select Pin to Start Menu. Does it get pinned with the right or wrong icon?

When you click on the ?>>? all your desktop icons are displayed, including their descriptions. Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how to set a custom icon size for the taskbar icons in Windows 7. I know you can select between large or small, however I'd like something in between those sizes (call it medium).

The large size takes up too much space, and the small size is a little small for my 15 inch high res laptop screen. Is there a way I can specify the icon size myself through the registry?

A:Custom taskbar icon sizes? Not large or small

My guess would be that you are going to need some third party program to do this. But be careful> icon, cursor and screensaver programs frequently come with adware, spyware or other malware.

It is a regular problem. Some windows files are deleted/corrupted. Try the options below:

Use system restore and restore to a previous dated restore point(which worked without the problem you specified)
If that didn't work, try the Avira AntiVir Removal Tool from Here
And the last option is using recovery tools like the one below. I've personally used it and was helpful.

hello all.

I have no idea how this happened, it happened after my computer had been on for hours.

But since about half an hour ago all my folder icons, eg: My Computer, My Documents C:\, and even the show desktop icon in the taskbar, have been replaced by the icon windows uses when it doesn't recognise the filetype.

even some stuff like ad aware and my GTA San Andreas Icon have been changed, but when i go to the properties and change icon manaully they come back to normal.
this doesn't work for the folders however.

i did notice that before i restarted my computer to try and fix this problem, that all icons were doing this, but now it seems to be just the folders.

anyone ever had this before and know how to fix it?

A:My folder icons have changed

Run the Error Check:

My Computer> right click on Local Drive- usually C> Properties> Tools> Error Check> check both boxes on the screen that comes up> OK.

Close the nag message and reboot. Let the process run. Computer will reboot when done.

See if this changes the icons back. If it does not, try doing a System Restore to date right before the icons changes.

And of course you have run all your security scans to make sure you don't have any malware.

I really need a commandline program that can produce 32bit icons and Vista Icons from PNG files. It has to be a commandline program since I need to use it in a batch script.

I've tried png2ico, but it can't produce icons with more than 256 colors and a 128x128 resolution. I then tried IconBox/ToYcon, but it didn't work from the commandline.

So could anyone recommend a program like png2ico that can make 32bit icons?

Edit: Tried XnView, but the transparency looked screwed up in the icons it made and it didn't work from a commandline.

In any folder If you go Tools > Folder Options and in the default 'General' tab under the 'Browse folders'section if you make sure 'Open each folder in the same window' is selected rather than 'Open each folder in its own window'.

I am not sure that I understand the issue with the Icons. But maybe again in Folder Options you are refering to the 'Tasks' section in the 'General' tab and its options of 'Show common tasks in folders' or 'Use windows classic folders'

Check into spoof or malware. Your desktop background could be a snapshot of an old desktop. Attempt to open a few seldom used programs. It the taskbar icon matches, then I am wrong about the malware.

Keyboard "alt+tab" for each press of 'tab' while holding 'alt' will cycle through the programs open on the taskbar.

i need help...for some reason, every time i log onto my computer, i see a minimized window on the taskbar. i tried left and right clicking does not maximize...there's only a minimized window with no title...can't open it. what's with it? and how do i get rid of it?

A:a blank minimized window on taskbar??

right click a blank area of the taskbar > check to see if the taskbar is Locked .If it is unlock and release that shortcut. If it goes away , re-lock and have a nice day.
If not , try a re-boot.

Whenever I right or left click anywhere on the taskbar, including the start button, it just makes a beep and so I can't click on anything. The windows button on the keyboard still opens the start menu, and it's no that the taskbar is locked or something (at least I tried that option from the control panel and it didn't help. All I did was download a program called Pinnacle Game Profiler which is a thing for getting your game pads to work on windows. I can't figure out what's wrong with it.

A:Mouse doesn't work on taskbar

well i did more searching than the first time and came up with this thread:

So i tried what the second guys said- ended the explorer process tree, then started it back up, it works now. It would still be nice to know what the problem is b/c I don't want to have to do this every time if it's not a permanent fix. Thanks.

A:Start bar + desktop icons gone, unable to click anything

There could be a lot of things possibly doing this.

what have you installed recently?

Has windows done automatic updates?

Grassy field suggests its windows xp. Can you boot into safe mode?

sounds like it could be the lsass.exe file problem.

A:Missing Taskbar and Reformat Crash

Out of interest, when you're starting the reload are you running it from windows, or letting the CD boot with the system?

One option would be to use some third party software, such as an Ultimate Boot CD ( to format the hdd, then attempt to reload windows.

Right click your desktop and select Arrange Icons By. Untick the Auto Arrange entry. You should now be able to place the icons where you like.

A:How to remove those icons in My Computer???

Those are network files and folders. You're also using VISTA.
I don't think you'll be able to change them unless you have admin rights to the network you're working on.

Hello I have a problem - there are no user icons on my quot interactive logon screen quot - only the quot Turn off Pete s Laptop quot button down at the bottom left I normally use the Missing all screen! at user icons logon XP-click-on-your-username-next-to-the-sunflower-or-snowboarder logon screen Pressing ctrl-alt-del does not bring up a logon dialogue box - at my logon screen I usually just click on one of my user profiles I didn t do anything out of the ordinary on my computer before shutting down last night and I have antivirus malware software running always and nothing showed up prior to Missing all user icons at logon screen! logging off - in fact nothing has shown up for ages Now I can t get into my computer at all even using different safe modes - there are just no users shown I ve searched for quot fixes quot on MS-KB but can t find anything that resembles this problem except for an old post on this forum here And what folk were saying to do on that thread was a little above my head Sorry to be really thick but can someone help me please My OS is XP SP I have user accounts that usually show up - one is quot Pete quot my usual one a limited account and the other is quot System Protection quot admin account that I only use to install programmes and make system changes - habit of mine left over from Linux days - I was using Pete last night Guest and admin accounts do not usually show up as options to click on - never enabled them My laptop came with a recovery section loaded onto a hidden and hopefully protected partition on the HD - unfortunately I don t know how to access this if I can t get into the comp When I first loaded Windows I remember being prompted to make a Vaio recovery disk actually there were and it took a while - but I m also unsure how to make them work and also on the original post about this people suggested I may just end up with the same problem although please correct me if I ve misinterpreted this Thanks in advance for people s input if there is any Pete If we knew what we were doing it wouldn t be called research would it Albert Einstein nbsp

A:Missing all user icons at logon screen!

Sony VAIO. Typical problem. You need to call their tech support if still under warranty. If out of warranty, reinstall the 8 disc recovery set.
It may be a spyware, trojan, or virus problem, but that is not helpful if you cannot boot up to fix it.
The Sony VAIO does not allow a Windows XP repair... only recovery or restore of the original install set... so you may be forced to reformat and reinstall.

My 2 year old was banging on the keyboard the other day and changed the way my desktop appears. The icons are no longer translucent and windows no longer auto refreshes when I make changes to files.

I've done a repair of XP, loaded all the updates, reinstalled the latest graphic/ATI drivers and VIA chip drivers. I can't find a setting option to change these settings.

Any ideas?

A:icons lost translucancy, windows doesn't auto refresh

For the translucency, go to Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance Settings>Check "Use Drop Shadows on Desktop Icons".

For the autogrid, go to your desktop, right click your mouse, select "Arrange Icons By", and then check "Auto Arrange" and "Align to Grid".

I hope this worked . Good Luck  !
