Restore Pinned apps in taskbar

Q: Restore Pinned apps in taskbar

Hi there, i have a problem after one of windows Update processes, i'm on Win7 Beta 7000 and all my default pinned apps buttons are gone, and "pinned app" feature is working strange.

A list of all the little strange problems happening:
-all buttons lost their extra features (recent doc, play/pause buttons for wmp, explorer particular list)
-a blank pinned app button that doesn't want to erase
-if i pin windows media player, when i open it another icon appears

Any idea?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there any way to keep all pinned apps. on the taskbar, to the left of all open windows (like in Windows 7 and earlier?

A:Pinned apps in taskbar - Keep to the left of open windows?

Hello Synomenon,

By default, any opened app or window will be to the right of all pinned apps on the taskbar unless it is a pinned app, then it will show opened wherever the pinned app is already at on the taskbar.

If you like, you are also able to drag the pinned apps in any arrangement on the taskbar though.

Hi everyone,
I have just started using one of Lenovo's hybrids, the Yoga 2 11, after using for a while a previous model (IdeaPad Yoga 11s).
Windows 8.1 on both.
Now, my new Lenovo surprised me with an interestingly annoying feature - it won't allow me to pin Windows apps to the taskbar. I've tried from the Start Apps menu and from everywhere. Only, I didn't try clicking on the app icon when it is running and shown on the taskbar - simply because it won't: there's no way to access the taskbar while an app is open unless returning to the desktop.
I'm quite a beginner but I don't understand why there are such differences when the operating system is the very same. All of this is referred to while in Laptop mode so I can't even see how Lenovo could have an influence on it.

If anyone out there ever had such an issue...

A:Lenovo hybrid - apps won't be shown/pinned on taskbar

Hello Armonia, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The modern apps are full screen in Windows 8.1, and will cover the taskbar. You can use step 3 or 5 to open the taskbar while you have a modern app open to see it.

Resetting and clearing all pinned items on the taskbar may be able to help with not being able to "Pin to taskbar" if it's corrupted.

Because I have more than two dozen pinned icons, I search a solution to backup & restore them in case I have to duplicate user profile or reinstall OS.

These icons are customized (some of them with tips founded here, for exemple game explorer, recycle bin etc..) with special *ico

I know pinned icon links are stored to :

%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\

But restored links don't restore pinned icons on an empty taskbar, even if I reset iconcache.db and restart computer.

Are there some registry entries or configuration files to backup/restore in order to find my customized taskbar icons ?

You might see if keeping a folder with a copy of the pinned shortcuts as a backup. After a clean install, you could then just pin them back to the taskbar, or pin the folder to the taskbar to make it even faster.

Hi guys. I noticed that in Win7, the applications in the new Quick Launch move if you run one of the applications in the "Pinned to Taskbar" section. For example, if I have Windows Explorer and Firefox next to each other and I click to open Windows Explorer, the Firefox icon will slide far to the right so that it's after the Windows Explorer task in the taskbar.

Is it possible to have more than one application in such a popup menu so I'll have lets say a pinned Icon for office. After right-clicking it, the menu pops up and lets me choose either access, powerpoint, word, excel etc.

The explorer has a custom menu so there should be a way to accomplish that right?

Since those are each individual programs, they would have a separate icon on the taskbar instead.

Hey all,

Vista veteran that just switched over to Win7 64-bit Home edition this week. Just pinned My Computer to the taskbar. When I click the icon, it brings up the list of internal/external drives (C, D, etc) as it should. But then, when I click on one of the drives, it opens up the contents in 2 other windows. Odd. So for instance, if I click on the C drive, I end up with 3 windows open, the My Computer window, and 2 separate C:drive windows.

Is there any way I can just have the contents of the C:drive (or whichever drive) open up in the same window as My Computer?

This only happens when I open My Computer through the taskbar, when I click on the icon on my desktop or on the start menu, it behaves normally.

Hope this makes sense - and thanks in advance!!!

I had the same problem. Heres what I did.

1. Delete all pinned itunes icon/s from the task bar.
2. Open itunes "normally" from desktop icon or startmenu.
3. Now this itunes (which you just opened) icon will appear on the task bar.
4. Right click on it and select "Pin this program to taskbar"
5. Now this icon behaves like all the other "regular" taskbar icons.

Hopefully i'm posting at the right section.

But I wanted to know if it is possible to make your pinned programs be at the right of the taskbar. So lets say you open a new program right now it comes to the right of the pinned programs right? Is it possible to move the pinned programs to the right and lock it there so that pinned programs are at the right and when you open a new program it just comes to the right of the ''Windows button'' as always. So the new opened programs still come at the left side but pinned stay at right.

Also a picture showing you what i mean.

Once pinned to the taskbar, I can also drag and drop folders onto the Windows Explorer's application icon in the taskbar which will add them to the "Pinned" group when I right lick on the Windows Explorer's application icon in the taskbar. Which is why I'd like to know if there is a quicker way to instruct this list. It's pretty funny you know? I only open a particular folder once, and it ends up in the list. But I try to get it to acknowledge another folder, and it won't do it. Irritating to say the least

In IE9 you can pin your favourite websites to the taskbar. If it is a large commercial site it may have its own Icon and that is displayed in the Taskbar. However you are meant to be able to change the icon, so for sites without an icon that just display the MS "e" symbol you can design a specific icon so you can identify the sites easily.

I thought that to do this you go to the properties window by right clicking on the icon then right clicking on the page name in the popup window. One of the tabs should then allow you to change the icon. I know I sucessfully did this in the beta, but I am not seeing the tab to do it in the full product.

The icon itself works, to open the program, it's just the files which will not open. It only seems to Office which is affected. Rather annoying. Any ideas?

A:Cannot launch pinned Office files from the taskbar?

Have you tried deleting those shortcuts from the taskbar and making new ones? Sometimes a shortcut will get loused up.

You said "taskbar" but where did the shortcut come from originally? For taskbar to work, you have to use the shortcuts from within Program Files, and those shortcuts, if you don't have Start8 or Classic Shell installed, can be in one of four places on your C drive.

Did you make the shortcuts by clicking "Pin to Taskbar" in the Start Screen? - Thats probably why it does not work, the Shortcut has to also be ON the Start Screen- Check to see if it has been deleted.

Let's assume 1 is the program to be re-moved, when i re-move 1 to 3 it became like this:
3 1 2 5 4
I hope that i explained the problem well

You should be able to drag and drop a pinned icon on the taskbar left or right in any order within the other pinned icons.

I have created a custom windows 7 pro image through audit mode and then sysprepped it.  Upon new user login, I notice that the three default taskbar items (IE, WMP, Explorer) are still there.  How can I get rid of these with a gpo/p?
And yes, the CopyProfile tag is set to true in my sysprep.xml file.
Thank you.

A:Help With Pinned iTunes Taskbar Icon Customization

Welcome to the Seven Forums, jiggs!

I had not investigated this until I saw your query so I did a little experimenting.

First I dragged the iTunes shortcut to the taskbar and pinned it:
Then I opened iTunes through the pinned icon resulting in the scenario you have presented:
Next, I closed iTunes and unpinned the shortcut:
I then sought out the iTunes.exe program in the "Program Files (x86)" folder (this is for Win x64, Win x86 will find the iTunes.exe in the "Program Files" folder):
Once having located the iTunes.exe, I dragged it to the taskbar and pinned it:
After opening the pinned iTunes.exe program I still had not found the solution you were seeking:
So I decided to unpin the iTunes.exe program I had just pinned to the taskbar without closing iTunes (this could have been done earlier with the pinned shortcut as well but, like I said, I was experimenting):
I then pinned the open iTunes still in the taskbar to the taskbar:
After closing iTunes, I then have this (of course):

Then, reopening iTunes from the now pinned icon I get...viola!:
Note: I have my settings in the taskbar set to "Combine when taskbar is full" but the results will be the same if you have it set to any of the other options:
To make a long story short, launch iTunes with your initially pinned icon, pin the resulting icon to the taskbar and unpin the initial icon. Or, just open iTunes and pin it to the taskbar while you have it open.

That should solve that, no?

I changed some of my default program icons such as firefox and in the start menu or when it's pinned to the taskbar it shows up changed how i want it, but if i don't have it pinned and open it I see the normal firefox icon. This only happens with a few programs so far I've seen it when trying Chrome, Firefox and Itunes.

A:Program icons appear different when pinned to taskbar and unpinned

Hi Eddie794, when you change a pinned Icon, you usually need to Unpin and Close the program before it will take effect to change the Icon, then you can repin it.

How did you change the Icon, did you change it from a Shortcut on your Desktop, a shortcut in the Start Menu, or from the Taskbar itself?

See if making another Shortcut for the Program and changing the Shortcut's Icon helps.

Go to the Application's location and Right Click on the .exe and select Create Shortcut
A popup will ask warning you that you cannot save there and will save to the Desktop instead, click Yes.
Right Click on the new Icon's Shortcut from the Desktop and select Properties.
In the Shortcut Properties Box select Change Iconand click Browse to go to the location of the Icon you want to change.
Repin iTunes or whatever program it is and the Icon should change:
Program Locations:
iTunes = C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe
Firefox = C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
Chrome = C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

The locations may vary because these are the 32 Bit locations and according to your System Specs you are running 64 Bit.
If none of this helps, try rebuilding your Icon Cache and try attempting this again

Apologies if this is something that's been asked numerous times, or if its something that's glaringly obvious in the windows 8.1 menus - but here goes:-

I would like to be able to have different programs pinned to each monitor, i.e. display 1's taskbar would have calculator, chrome, and utorrent pinned to it, and then display 2's taskbar would have download folder, wow, xbmc, etc pinned to it.

For the life of me I cant seem to have individual programs pinned to each display - its either have all of the same pinned programs on both taskbar, or none on the extended taskbar.

Can anyone help?

On my dv6t laptop, I let the HP auto-update software install whatever it wanted to update. After it did it, an icon related to Simplepass is pinned to the taskbar and I can't get rid of it.  Right-clicking and selecting "Unpin this program from the taskbar" does nothing.  How do I get rid of it. I want to keep the program. But don't want the icon pinned to the taskbar.  Then, when I opened Microsoft Excel, it said that a hardware change had been detected and that I have to re-activate. Why would this happen?  How can I keep it from happening again. Is it better to just never let HP update anything?

A:Simplepass update, icon now permanently pinned on taskbar

I tried something along the lines of what aperez1221 suggested and it seems to be an acceptable solution. I wasn't sure what you meant by "unchecking the simple pass site box."  So I opend SimplePass and went into the settings.  I unchecked everything under "Enable Features' and then tried re-checking them one by one.  I determined that disabling only LaunchSite solves the problem and seems to leave the program working the way it did before.  So thank you aperez1221 for pointing me in the right direction.  I'm not sure what I'm missing out on by disabling LaunchSite.  This solution may not work for anyone who uses the features enabled by LaunchSite. I haven't figured out what those features are. It seems to be QuickLaunch that lets me swipe a finger to open a program or a web site (in a new browswer window). And I can still login to websites using my finger as well.  So with just LaunchSite disabled, SimplePass does what it did before and no longer re-pins itself to the taskbar.  I've left this open for now in case someone has a solution that doesn't require disabling LaunchSite, whatever that does.

I notice that I try to keep apps off the pinned menu because I often accidentally click an icon that i wasn't supposed to, but a double click would eliminate that since double-clicking active applications does nothing. Trying to start a Pinned Item is followed by an error Message, that the target Program seems to have been mooved or deleted.

Even the created Librarys dissappear. Trying to create new ones is qouted with: You can't create rhe Library XXXX. Accsses denied.

I can't figgure out a reason for this since this happened on different occasions. Most of them didn't even include operations on the Filesystem. For Exapmle browsing the Internet with IE. On an other occasion I've been using the "Send To" dialog.

I looking forward for any Help on this Issue. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried?:If the program is already running, right-click the program's button on the taskbar (or drag the button toward the desktop) to open the program?s Jump List, and then click Pin this program to taskbar.
If the program isn't running, click Start, find the program?s icon, right-click the icon, and then click Pin to Taskbar.
Also, try dragging the program's shortcut from the desktop or Start menu to the taskbar.

Here is our dilemma. At the community college I work at, the librarians have requested that certain icons be pinned to the taskbar for all users. By default, Internet Explorer, File Explorer, and Store are pinned on the taskbar in Windows 8.1.

Well, they want none of those icons pinned to the taskbar, but they do want other icons pinned. I have tried a script to get rid of them on logon, but it deletes the icons so slowly that users can actually notice the icons disappearing on logon (it takes about 2 seconds per icon to delete). The librarians dislike this.

So, has anyone figured out the mechanism that creates these three icons? I would like to figure out a way to disable their creation in the first place, if possible. Already, Windows will allow additional icons to be added; it simply won't allow these three to be removed.

A:Windows 8.1 taskbar, changing icons of pinned programs?

Hi rp88 You just have to change the icon of the shortcut or application that you drag in the taskbar, it'll keep that icon. Just tested it myself and it worked

I searched this and ended up deleting and rebuilding the icon cache per another thread, but it did not work. I attached a screenshot. The icons missing are google chrome, opera, and CPUIDhmonitor.

Beginning a couple of days ago the shortcuts pinned to my taskbar began opening in a separate window so that when I started a program, it would open on the far right and the shortcut would still be visible. How do I restore the taskbar so that the program's window will take the place of the shortcut?

So my computer decided to change the directory of my pinned items to a folder in my downloads, and I can't figure out how to change it back or find any information on how to do so. I've tried restarting the computer, scanning for possible virus/malware, dragging the folder to I believe default location of

"C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"

but to no avail. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? If you need any more information just ask and I'll try to provide it.

A:How do I change the pinned items folder location on windows 7 taskbar?

Hello Suushi, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Pinned items on the taskbar are stored in the hidden folder below instead.

C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
What did you do to try and move the I assume "User Pinned" folder?

If you like, you might see if resetting taskbar pinned items back to default. You'll need to "Pin to Taskbar" any programs you want back afterwards though.

I want to customize the command-line from Firefox "Open new private window":

I tried right-clicking it but it only shows me "Open".

Thanks in advance.

My thread title is: Pinned programs on task bar from bitlocker drive icons do not resolve
Oops. Should have been: Pinned program Icons on task bar from bitlocker drive programs do not resolve

Hi. I am using Bitlocker for a laptop drive, which is very secure and works well.

The problem is that there are various programs that reside in that bitlocker locked drive. When I boot up my PC, these pinned program icons on my task bar are just plain vanilla (the drive that they are on - is bitlocked).

After putting in the key, the bitlocked drive unlocks, decrypts and all files are made accessible. The corresponding programs work and are fine, but the program task bar icons do not resolve to be the pretty program icon pictures I am used to. Instead they look like this (like the one circled):

A:Pinned programs on taskbar from bitlocker drive icons do not resolve

Logged onto Win7 and unlocked the bitlocked drive. This time all the program icons with programs residing in the bitlocked drive resolved themselves. We'll see it this trend continues. That would be good.

One strange thing is that I posted this same problem in a previous thread on Nov. 11, 2014 here in SevenForums. After a time, it was completely deleted, with no explanation as to why. Weird.

Well it looks like MS has been working on the problem since. That's a good thing.

Not marking it solved yet. I would like to see a trend of these resolving first.

A:Pinned folder to taskbar, can't stop windows explorer from popping up.

HI Artemisia,
I may be missing something in my understanding, but isn't that what you would expect ?  If, for example, you were to use Irfanview to look at an image and click on 'File/Open' you get the 'Open file' dialogue box which is just a potted Windows Explorer view, and you navigate to the folder containing the image you want.
Here, you already have the folder you want, so you get the Windows Explorer view of the contents of the folder so you can select the file you want. If I interpret your second screen shot correctly, the folder you have pinned to the taskbar contains other folders as well as files, and that is what the screenshot reflects.
If my interpretation of what is happening is correct, the system is trying to help you - not get in your way !  Loved the recycle bin icon !

Hi All Recently took the plunge and downloaded Windows I'm still in the process opened pinned right open the Force taskbar of windows icons? to to of tweaking it to my liking and there are Force opened windows to open to the right of pinned taskbar icons? a few things that are driving me nuts and I don't know how or if I can fix them The main problem that is irritating me right now relates to the taskbar and pinned icons I've pinned several commonly used icons which rest nicely on the bottom left However when I click on an icon I notice it will open up right next to the icon itself I really dislike this as it essentially boots all the other objects to the right of that icon to the right which makes it harder to find other objects in that taskbar list that I might want to click on to open The problem gets worse when I click on several pinned items too Is there a way to force open programs to always open to the right of the last icon It was obviously normal possible to do this in XP Win Any advice or assistance would be most appreciated Sincerely Mr Gisa P S - Bonus questions issues that are starting to bother me as well I is there a way to give these opened windows a dark black border like in XP Not a fan of the transparent borders but can't find the option to enable them II I'm reaching here but is there also a way to turn off the fade in out when clicking on a video link or looking at pictures

Okay, forgive me if the title is a little hard to understand. Yesterday I made a huge mistake by going to Taskbar and Start Menu and unchecking both "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu" and "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar". What I'm trying to find out is if I can make shortcuts to two of the programs that are pinned to my taskbar. Those programs are Google Chrome and iTunes. I've noticed that if I unpin them from the taskbar that they will appear on the Start menu, but I don't want to unpin them. I have tried pinning them to the Start menu, but with those two programs pinned and the other programs just sitting there, it actually makes my Start menu look really cluttered and messy. So the real question is, can I put items on the Start menu without unpinning them from the taskbar and without pinning them to the Start menu?

Yep: re-enable "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu", and then open the programs. When there are unwanted programs in there, just right-click them and choose "Remove from this list".

You can also use Windows Key + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. to open any pinned item on the Taskbar because each number corresponds to a pinned item starting from the left. So Windows Key + 1 opens the first item, and then on the other side Windows Key + 0 opens the 10th item from the left.

Beyond that, I don't know if the list of recently opened programs in the Start Menu can be edited.

I have Minecraft pinned on my task bar, but when I click on it, it opens up a completely different cube on my task bar. I have tried re-pinning the other one that opens, with no luck..
Screen cap -->

A:Minecraft taskbar issue, won't stay in pinned spot after start.

That would be because the program Minecraft is JAVA based program.

What you're pinning to the taskbar (the minecraft executable from the installation folder) is not the program that's actually used by the game in order to run, what is run is usually the java executable that is handling the program, usually javaw.exe/java.exe/javaws.exe

This java executable is application independant, which means that for every program that you launch that requires Java, a new instance of javaw.exe/java.exe/javaws.exe will be launched and added to your Task Manager.
For example:-

I use a Java based program called PS3 Media Server to stream video content to my PS3.

The program's executable is called PMS.exe.

When I open PMS.exe what is actually launched is an instance of javaw.exe in my task manager.

And so, since Windows refers to this javaw.exe in your task manager as a new and unrelated program, it adds it to your taskbar.

Notice the two green arrow program icons on my taskbar picture, the first one is the PMS.exe that I pinned to the taskbar, and the 2nd one is the javaw.exe process that is handling the program.

So in conclusion, what you've mentioned in your opening post is normal by design.

I notice that in Windows 7, when you right click a pinned program to the taskbar, the menu to select options is many pixels away from the program. In previous versions of Windows, the 'Close' function in the menu was a single pixel away from the cursor when you clicked, so you could close programs quickly. Now, in 7, I always have to move my mouse so far away to click the close option. Is there any way to change this?

Example (what all menus used to look like):

A:Windows 7 Taskbar Creates Separate Chrome Icons Other Than Pinned Icon

Welcome to Seven Forums juiceimus. The fact you don't have it synced makes it difficult, as that is a fix. I have 2 ideas for you:

Right click the Chrome shortcut> Properties> Compatibility Tab> Change compatibility to Vista

See if that works (you could try other compatibility choices as well. This would be a workaround as the fix is something you can't do

Also, you might try unpinning the icon, Open Chrome from the start menu by right clicking the Chrome icon and choosing Run as administrator. Now pin that instance of Chrome to the taskbar, and see of that helps.

Hi everyone My apologies if this has Maximize Taskbar Double Running on Program Required to Pinned Click been brought up already I did some searching but couldn't find anything relevant I've been doing a lot to my installation of Windows lately Tweaking it and adjusting things to really customize my experience I'm not sure if this was always there but just recently I've actually noticed it The situation Double Click Required to Maximize Running Pinned Program on Taskbar is I have an open program on my taskbar ex Firefox which is pinned I also have other programs pinned to my Double Click Required to Maximize Running Pinned Program on Taskbar taskbar like Thunderbird Initially after I boot up the computer switching between pinned programs is fine It takes one click on the icon on the taskbar to open up the minimized program However eventually I find that it takes two or more clicks to open that program The first click does nothing then the second or third click finally maximizes the program After becoming annoyed by this I started to carefully watch what I was doing to see if I could catch any kind of connection between my working habits and the incidence of the glitch I was able to reproduce the problem in one way I often keep multiple Wordpad documents open which I take notes in I noticed that after a fresh reboot everything would work fine single clicks only necessary to open minimized programs until I had Wordpad open As soon as I had one or two Wordpad documents open programs would start to become less responsive in terms of maximizing them from the taskbar Again it would take two clicks on the respective icon or more to maximize the program I figured I'd found it so I totally switched over to a free Wordpad alternative LibreOffice and customized everything in there to my liking I actually like it much more than Wordpad not surprisingly Everything worked fine I could have multiple documents open in LibreOffice and single-click on minimized programs to open them to my heart's content Then I opened Skype to quickly check if anyone was online and realized that as soon as I did that the problem returned Multiple clicks were necessary to maximize a program from the taskbar I really don't know what's going on Again I've been fiddling with themes got a fancy mouse that I could assign hotkeys to etc etc I wouldn't bother you all with this but as you probably know Windows is a huge mess of variables and finding out what specific variable is causing your problem can be tricky sometimes Am I just imagining that it was Wordpad and Skype that triggered the problems I just restarted my computer and opened my LibreOffice documents and all of my usual programs and have been avoiding opening Skype Everything is working fine and I'm having no trouble clicking on minimized programs on the taskbar I can only expect that Skype Wordpad and probably some other unknown specific programs will cause the necessary clicking to go haywire again What could be going on I started uninstalling various stuff to play around with what might have thrown things off but it's not working and I'm slowly undoing all of my customization Thank you so much for any help and sorry to be such a n b

A:Double Click Required to Maximize Running Pinned Program on Taskbar

I might have found it. I think it might be the 'Taskbar Thumbnail Preview'. If I click too fast between windows before the taskbar thumbnail preview appears, sometimes, the program won't maximize. Maybe that's what was actually happening and I was just making false assumptions about specific programs throwing things off track?

At any rate, I just installed '7+ Taskbar Tweaker' and disabled thumbnail previews. So far, things are going well -- no errors to report. I'll report back after I spend another day or two clicking around, as usual.

If anyone has any other advice in the meantime, I'd be thankful for it!

Thanks again.

So I upgraded to Windows 10 and reverted back to Windows 7. And now my pinned / recent documents aren't showing on the taskbar icons.

For example, I have Excel on the taskbar icons. Before the upgrade, I was able to view recently opened documents and even pinned them to the icons which I can view by simple right clicking the icons on the taskbar.

How do I get this back?

Example: PS doesn't show my pinned or recent items. Excel does.... Word doesn't.
