documents and settings folder of windows.old

Q: documents and settings folder of windows.old

I downloaded seven on the same hdd that my xp was loaded onto and it created the 'windows.old' folder. i wanted to delete this folder because it had nothing i wanted to keep, however, when i tried to do so, the 'documents and settings' folder would not delete.

when i try to delete it, i get this message: 'this is no longer located in C:\Users\kyle\Desktop. Verify the item's location and try again.'

any ideas on what to do so that i can delete this folder would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try and log off then log on again to see if it's still there.

A while ago i was having severe problems with windows xp, so I did a repair installation(i think). Whatever it was, it essentially deleted the winxp system files and reinstalled it. I created my user account using the same name as last time, but ran into a problem: because windows detected a folder with that username on it already, it created a new one with the format of username.computername. This is created numerous problems, including but not limited to me not being able to upload things via ftp from my my documents folder because the directory path gives the ftp programs a heart attack. Does anyone know how i could change what directory windows looks at for my files?

A:Windows xp account documents and settings folder

To change the path to my documents:

just right click on the my documents folder, the path is listed as an option..

A:Access Denied for Windows 8.1 Documents & Settings folder

That is the correct condition - you are not supposed to be able to access that area. If you have tried to force the issue undo whatever you have done before you hit trouble, using System Restore if necessary. This is the path you want to get you to the Startup folder:"C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"You need to say what this welcome idea is about - a screen message, audio or what? You can put a shortcut in Startup to whatever you wish.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Hi I recently repaired an XP Professional installation and now i no longer have the option to login but and windows settings start up at folder documents has no user login has to the old profile just a default profile with admin rights The profile still has its documents and settings folder with everything intact and all programs from the original profile seem to be in program files The user also does not appear in local users and groups I have even been able to move over the application data and open a program which remained authorized and had access to previous presets I also made a new profile and in the registry changed the profile image path to that of the old profiles folder I m not sure why it just seemed important to see the old desktop again which i do but all the paths for the programs or at least most of them are set to quot I quot changing the path to quot C quot worked on some programs anyway i user has no login at windows start up but has documents and settings folder digress what am i missing here am I able to regain the previous access nbsp

"Access Denied" is a proper and routine message encountered...when moving a hard drive from one system to another. Only impacts the Docs & Settings files/folders, all other files can be easily accessed. So can the Docs & Settings folders, by taking ownership of the files/folders.Taking Ownership in VistaLouis

I am running Windows XP On And Documents D:\ Folder And Settings C:\ Home SP Documents And Settings Folder On C:\ And D:\ OEM version on a MESH computer with a Gb hard drive and Gb of RAM My hard disk is divided into three partitions C D and E with Windows installed on C I recently had what I thought was a driver problem with my DVD RW and using the CD that came with my Mesh computer I decided to do a system file scan and repair or replace any system files that appeared corrupted damaged However the machine started a reinstall of Windows and because I did not know how to stop it I had to let it go through the full cycle of reinstalling Windows over the Windows installation that already existed Two days later I have reinstalled all my software and preferred system settings and everything seemed okay until I had a problem downloading updates for Adaware Checking the settings in Adaware I saw it was pointing it s update files to D Documents and Settings and not as it should be at C Documents and Settings I find I now have a Documents and Settings folder on my D partition as well as on my C partition althought the copy on my D partition does not have as many sub folders and entries I know I cannot delete the Documents and Settings folder from the D partition because Windows will not let me and anyway it would cause an unknown number of problems My questions are Can I somehow move merge all the entries in the D partition folder to the C partition folder so that I again have only one Documents and Settings folder Am I stuck with Documents and Settings folders At the moment I have lost the will to live but if I decided to reinstall Windows again how would I get rid of the Documents and Settings folder from the D partition and how would I stop the same folder being created on the D partition again as I don t remember being given an option during the installation process I don t know why it would but if I format the C partition first and then reinstall Windows XP will that stop the creation of a second Documents and Settings folder on the D partition I can t figure this out for myself as I m not an expert but I am reasonably experienced and if registry hacks are involved I m already in the process of making backups should someone have a means of remedying my problem At the risk of being a bore if I am stuck with both now is there a way I can ensure that any future entries during software installation etc are made in the Documents and Settings Folder on the C partition Thanks

A:Documents And Settings Folder On C:\ And D:\

Apparently, this can happen if you attempt to (or inadvertently) install XP over top of an existing XP installation: See here: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-297664.phpNow, his ended up on C and yours ended up on D. How? I don't know but I would be willing to guess that if you did a full format, then recreated your partitions, and then did the full reinstall on C, your problems would go away... I know it didn't take a brain surgeon to figure that one out but at least the above thread might give you some idea as to how you ended up where you are today.

A:documents and settings folder

Quote:

You probably know that the C:\Documents and Settings folder doesn’t exist anymore in Vista. It was replaced by the C:\Users and C:\ProgramData. Vista uses symbolic links pointing to these new folders for compatibility reasons. However, many guides still refer to the old folder structure. There is a simple trick for using the old folder name in Windows Explorer, though. This way you can find configuration files easier.

If you want to see the symbolic links, you have to enable first “Show hidden files and folders” in Folder Options. To access the Folder Options you must press “ALT” in Windows Explorer to make the menu visible. You’ll find them under tools.

Now, you should be able to see Documents and Settings. But if you double click on it, you’ll get an error messages. Even administrators don’t have enough NTFS rights to navigate to this folder. It is not even possible if you change the rights by taking the ownership.

You can, however, navigate to subfolders of Document and Settings by entering the corresponding folder name in the address bar of Windows Explorer. For example, just type C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\ and you will see all of the user profiles’ subfolders, you know from Windows XP.

A:Documents and Settings folder in XP

All Users, Default User, LocalService, NetworkService and Freya are normal.

The others result from things like removed accounts and Windows reinstalls over top of what's already there.

It's safer to just ignore the extra stuff until your next clean install unless there is a lot of space used. You have to be a little careful. For example, one of Local Service and LocalService.NTAUTHORITY is the current one; you have to figure out which is current and only mess with the older one.

I have a hard disk here on which XP home is installed and on NTFS. That hard disk has been removed from the original machine because the boot sector has bad clusters and it will no longer go to Windows; however, the hard disk does actually seem to run fine when attached to my other machine running Windows 2000.

My project is to copy all the data from the My Documents folder on the failed hard disk to the good hard disk in the other machine before this failed hard disk has to be returned to Dell. I am getting "Access Denied" when attempting to open this folder. I do understand this folder is protected in some way by the OS; but, I gotta' get this data copied before we have to return the disk to Dell.

Any ideas?

A:Copying Documents And Settings folder

Are you logged into the "good" PC with admin rights? If so, you can take ownership of the folder and then give yourself rights to access all the folders. Then you can copy what you need.

Make sure that when you take ownership or grant rights, that you check the box for all sub-folders.

I would like to know if it is possible to move your documents and settings folder.

If for instance you have a C: and D: drive, documents and settings is normaly on C: but I would like to move it to D:

Is this possible and how do I do it, I want to move the whole folder and not just my documents.

nope..all your login, desktop settings, data for all programs is there..

I am not sure what caused it but one day the documents and settings folder in the 'C' drive just dissapeared. I then scanned for viruses, and it found a few adware files, and 2 viruses. I got rid of everything. It still is gone. I have no restore points or any of that. I even tryed reinstalling XP and it still is gone. And for example if you look for music through musicmatch, and you go in the 'C' drive. It shows that the doc & settings folder is really there. I tryed formatting the folder to show hidden files. It is still not there.... I REALLY NEED HELP!!!!

When you attempted the system restore did you pick a date that was prior to this problem?

A strange folder has appeared twice now on my computer in my Documents and Settings folder. Usually it contains the normal folders for the user accounts on my computer. But there is a folder called "Christian Jansen" that has appeared in it. The first time it said the folder was created December 21, 2008, and I didnt notice it until a few weeks ago. The second time it said the folder was created August 5, 2009, and I just now saw it. The folder is empty except for a folder named "XFER" which is also empty. I have no idea where this came from as its not a user account on my computer. how could have this got on there?

In Windows 7 I am trying to access my DRM folder to update a digital rights configuration setting but when I try to open the folder,  I find a padlock icon next to the folder icon and I get a message "C:\Documents and Settings is not accessible. Hello,
When I go to my C drive I can no longer see the folder Documents and Settings, it disappeared. I tried to show hidden files from folder options but its not there.

What I have to do to open it is manually type the address C:\Documents and Settings then it will open and I can see everything inside of it.

Why is the folder not showing if it exists?

Also the same happened to some other files (illustrator files), they just disappeared and I cant find them anymore as if they got deleted.

Help?

Hi this is my first post here, thanks for helping!

The store where I bought my computer from used my full name when installing Win XP Pro.

I'm concerned about security, particularly when surfing, so I'd rather not have my full name being used in the Documents and Settings folder.

Can someone please tell me how to get my name out of the system please?

Thank you!

I am running Windows XP Home version 2002 with SP3 and cannot connect to the internet with 2 of the User Accounts.
Account No 1 No problems
Account No 2 IE freezes whenever I try to connect to the internet.
Account No 3 I set up this new account to see if a new account would have the same problem connecting to the internet as Account No 2. It does.
On checking both Accounts I found that the Documents & Settings folder is missing. In Account No 1 it is present.
Would this missing folder have anything to do with being unable to connect to the internet and if so, how can I resolve the issue?
Many thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

Hi my name's David I turned on my computer today and found all my settings my desktop icons my favourites my playlists in Media Player etc were all missing All my programs thought I was using them for the first time it was as if I was a new user When I searched for a document I'd saved to the desktop I found it in Documents and Settings David In Folder Settings Documents in and User Second fact all my documents and pictures were there However in Documents and Settings there Second User Folder in Documents and Settings now appears to be a second user folder called David DAVID- BA C that doesn't contain any of my documents or settings and I appear Second User Folder in Documents and Settings to be accessing that account instead of my normal user Second User Folder in Documents and Settings account So my computer has created a second rogue account that I am logged in as I tried to Change User but the only option was 'David' and that took me back to the David DAVID- BA C desktop I am the only person who uses my computer I tried changing the name of the user account from 'David' to 'Steve' in Control Panel User Accounts This had the affect of changing the name of Documents and Settings David My Documents to Documents and Settings David Steve's Documents However when I tried to change users the only option was called 'Steve' and it took me back to the David DAVID- BA C desktop This means that any changes I make to my user settings the computer applies to 'David' and Windows thinks I am 'David' but I can only log in as 'David DAVID- BA C ' This is causing a number of problems for my programs such as Live Messenger which won't let me sign in Please help me I would be happy to supply any futher details

A:Second User Folder in Documents and Settings

try creating a new user account and see if you can access that ok, and create a new document (anything will do). If you are ok accessing that, then migrate all your docs over to the new account. Hope the following will give you some idea: How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

Can you post back and let me know if you are able to create and access a new user account.

I'm new to windows 7 and having a hard time navigating the file structure. When I try to open documents and settings, access is denied. Under libraries-documents there is a folder named My Videos.....access is denied to that one as well. How do I get access. I'm the only user and an administrator. Why can't I see what's in these folders? Thanks.

I can no longer access my 'Documents and Settings' folder, each time I try, I get a message saying 'Access denied'. I tried running a search for files I know are within that folder, but the search just seems to bypass that folder altogether. I tried a system restore, but that didn't help either. HELP!

A:Documents and Settings folder - access denied

Hi Magnummaniac, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Documents and Settings in Windows 7 is not a folder, it is just a junction (link) used for backward compatibility with Windows XP; for instance when an application tries to save something as in XP to Document and Settings, Windows 7 redirects the action to corresponding folder in its own main Users folder, default at C:\Users. A user should never need to access Documents and Settings in Windows 7.

Using myself as an example, I have used Windows 7 six years now, started over a year before it was officially published in 2009. I have never - I repeat Never Ever - even clicked the Documents and Settings icon, nor have I had any reason to access it.

I've been using Win7 for a while and have found some quirky behavior, but this one has got me stumped. The Documents and Settings Folder now appears in Explorer as a Shortcut...I don't recall that being the case before? When I click it, I get, the pop up window, "You don't currently have permission to access this folder." Clicking 'continue' gives 2nd pop up, "You have been denied access to this folder".

There is only 1 account set up on this laptop, and it is the Administrator, and of course that is how I am logged in. The security permissions show that I have "Full Control". "Special Permissions" are only assigned to the 'System'.

If I look at he properties (at least of the shortcut in Explorer) they are set to Read-Only.

So, I'd like to verify that:

1. Access to this folder via Explorer is by Shortcut...and it was always that way and didn't magically change.

2. There should be access to the actual folder, at least by the Administrator Account.

3. and how do you access this folder dag nab it.

Thanks,

WinClick to expand...
If no group permissions were changed it is a simple case of ownership. Right click the shortcut>ope file location>right click folder>security>who owns it?

If the owner is not you, you can either add yourself to the group that owns it (trusted installer perhaps?) or take ownership of the folder.
That should enable access

Let us know if you need help

Hi, as stated on the topic, I did a very very dumb thing. I got infected with malware that just created fake folders. Got rid of the malware, but the fake folders remained. they were locked so they were a pain to get rid off. I didn't know it was the real documents and settings and not a fake one. I didn't realize it till I cleared the recycle bin and it showed an unusually large number of items being deleted. too late by then.

None of my programs are showing any issues for now.. so any way I can get it back? I realize they call it a junction or some sort? System restore doesn't work for permanently deleted files.. If I leave it as is, how badly is it gonna mess things up?

A:accidentally deleted Documents and settings folder

Among other recovery software/options available...you might try Recuva .

I'm the only user on my computer, so I log in as the administrator. When I click on "Documents and settings" folder I get an error message "access denied". If I right click and choose properties I see I don't access to the security settings.

If I log off or choose switch user, there's only one user available, which is me, the administrator. The way I prefer to use my computer is to auto logon, so it opens up to the desktop and not some logon screen. I would prefer to keep the one user and somehow give me access privileges to everything on my computer. I really don't like all the hyper security, I prefer more like XP, where I can do anything I want. Since I have C drive images if things get fouled up I can always revert to an earlier image.

How can I give myself all access and bypass this security?

A:Administrator can't access Documents and Settings folder

You don't need access to that folder and other folders like that. They are not really folders, they are sort of like shortcuts to be used by older programs that are looking for the old folder structure.

You only see these folders because you (or someone) told the operating system to show hidden stuff.

If you were to force security changes on C:\Documents and Settings it would just lead you to C:\Users.

Some duplicates are needed for a system to function properly. Be careful about deleting, although I can't say the ones you have are needed. Wait for others to reply.

Has anyone any idea what this might relate to and why it is there?

I have never heard of a ".bios" file extension.

I would be suspicious of it.

Go here and use the "Browse" button to find it on your machine. Upload it to be scanned for malware.

Good afternoon,
I use exchange online a lot (OWA) and a few days ago Internet Explorer started defaulting to OneDrive Documents Folder instead of my local Documents folder. It was running fine before that. Not sure what changed. I have since changed
settings in OneDrive to save locally instead of on OneDrive and even disabled OneDrive completely. However, every time I try to add an attachment from Internet Explorer, it defaults to my OneDrive folder and not my local folder. Anyone know of a fix? Yes,
I know I could just use a different folder and copy from my Documents folder to the new folder, but there's obviously an issue that I would like to fix. Thank you all for your help.

A:Why User folder shows My Documents but folder location is Documents?

Hello pcwin,

The user folders that have "My" in the name are not actually named with the "My".

These are symbolic links, so when you name the folder "Documents", it will automatically rename and display as "My Documents", but in reality is still "Documents".

It can be a bit confusing.

how CAN I TRANSFER PHOTO FILES INTO "DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

A:accessing "documents and settings"folder

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName is what Windows XP previously called the User file. The User file in all versions of Windows since then are C:\Users\yourusername. Librariess are the place holders introduced in Windows 7 with short cuts to the directories (Pictures, Music Etc) in the User File. There are no directories or files that you can access or rename called Documents and Settings.
You will have to remap the Momento Photo book to C:\Users\YourUserName\(My)Pictures\Momento Photo book or whatever the name of the file that Photobook creates.

Seven months ago, I repartitioned my drives and installed XP. I thought I did it judiciously, but now I find my C: drive filling up, mostly because of the Documents and Settings folder.

I'd like to reocate it to my D: partition.

I googled the subject, but the resulting hits leave me more confused than anything. Has anyone done this successfully (relocating the "Documents and Settings" folder)? How, please.
Thanks a bunch!

Hi.

The partition C, where Windows XP is installed, became too small. Often XP crashes with the blue screen (BSOD).

I already, successfully, moved the system folder "My Documents" to another hard drive, to give space, and changed the registry accordingly.

That was two years ago. Meanwhile, my space is again too small, somehow everything seems to grow on that partition. I need to give space again.

I tried to copy the system folder "Documents and Settings" to another partition before making any registry change. But i cannot copy, XP reports an error saying that "NTUSER cannot be copied. The file is being used by another person or program".

I also don't find any variable inside the registry pointing to that system folder.

Is there anyone out there who has experience and can give me advices?

Hi;
In my Documents and Settings folder there are 7 folders: A, Dad, Older son, Younger son, all users, app data, and default user folders...
Often when saving a file, the default folder will be one named "A" in the documents and settings folder. I was trying to delete the "A" folder so there would just be mine and the two boys... in the hopes that mine would be the target for default file saves (instead of the nearly empty "A")

The comp won't let me delete A since it's a system folder...
Is that there for networking / file sharing purposes? Is there a thread which explains what I'm not getting? (Or could someone please explain it to me?)...

I searched through threads for nearly an hour before posting...

Thanks for any help...

I have one folder in which I keep all my music. There are 605 items, consisting of both folders and music files.
I sort the folder by "date last saved" so that my newest songs are always at the bottom and the oldest are at the top, after the sub folders

However, whenever I open the folder, windows seems like it is re-searching and rebuilding the cache, taking upwards of 5 seconds in order for the folder to be sorted again.

This only started happening after I reinstalled windows, however that is all that has changed. My music is on another drive, the same drive that it was before I reinstalled.

Why does it keep doing this, and how do I get it to remember how it is sorted?

Attached is a video demonstrating what happens

What should I backup from documents and settings in Windows XP if I only want to backup the Windows XP settings changes that I made to it?

I do not need to backup the settings changes that I made to my programs. Just changes to the OS settings.

Sevenforums only links to vistax64.com and doesn't have a xpforums.com... so I'm posting it here.

A:What should I backup from documents and settings in Windows XP?

Those settings are stored in hidden AppData files, however I would not reimport them as they are a corruption path. Better to start afresh with new settings for your OS and programs.

Hi, if anyone could help me with this, it would be great!

All of a sudden when I try to open my C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder, it says "access denied"

running xp home sp2.

any suggestions?

oh, I did a google for solutions and various pages often suggested I turn off simple file sharing, but the option is non existant under my file/view menu...

A:Access Denied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

It sounds to me as though the administrator has made that directory path private. Are you the admin, and if so, are you logged into a user account with admin rights? If all else fails, reboot and log into the Administrator account and go to the control panel/users and change your preferred account status. While you're there, unlock the problem path to allow all users to view.

Good Luck!

Yeah,.. I know that this is an old question that's been around since XP was a new-born. I need to to move "Documents and Settings" from drive C to D because I have about 80 gig spare space on D drive. I've been trawling the various forums and help sites for a few days now and it just seems to be in the "too hard" basket with a plethora of conflicting ways to achieve success. It appears that if Docs and Settings wasn't put on D drive during the initial clean install, then it is a real pain to move it later.
I'd like a straight answer from my trusted friends on TSF as to whether it is possible or not,.. if it involves jumping through lotsa hoops and delving deeply & dangerously into the registry, then I'm not interested. But if there is indeed an easy fix, then let's hear about it.

Thanks guys & gals

I am running Windows 7 on my notebook, as the owner and admin.....
I try to access this folder, and I cannot...in fact it appears as a shortcut rather than a folder...i have run antivirus, and malware, found nothing....
tried to change the security....all users has rights to it, the admin does not and cannot be changed....any ideas?

A:C:\Documents and Settings\all users\documents DENIED!!!

It looks like one of the junction points that provides some backwards compatibility and which shows when unhiding files in Control Panel>Folder Options>View. There is no Documents and Settings folder in Win7, except as a junction point.

Read more about junction points here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...=vs.85%29.aspx

In Win7 Documents is under All Users>[User Name]>Documents. Perhaps you should hide Hidden and System Files again to see only the WIn7 folders you need.

Hello,

Here is the situation : I work in two schools with different domains. I had to setup 2 windows 10 in dual boot on my computer. So depending on what school I am working at the moment I start windows 10 (I) or windows 10 (II).
Relocating desktop folder, documents, music, video's, pictures is no problem.
But is there a possibility to share also the rest of the documents and setting. It's like using roaming profiles on your own computer? It would be easy to have the same settings in both windows 10 machines.

Many thx for the help

Hey guys I tried to switch on my laptop yesterday and windows wouldnt start up I was presented with two options Settings Windows, Hard Issue Disk and Documents and - Start a diagnostic to attempt to repair the problem or resume and Windows, Hard Disk and Documents and Settings Issue open windows anyway Trying to resume did nothing suggesting that there was indeed a problem I performed the diagnostic to try and see what was wrong with windows but it couldnt find a problem I did not have any restore points on the computer as it was relatively new just over months I was also under the impression restore points were created after new data was installed but perhaps i was wrong in that assumption I looked in the VAIO recovery area which was an advanced option given to me once the diagnostic had failed to turn up anything and performed a hardware diagnostic Again nothing Finally i attempted to rescue my files by loading my computers C drive onto an external hard disk I have tried this three times and each time it stops about or just over half way through with no explanation for why it has stopped When looking at the custom recovery i looked for the Documents and Settings folder as this was the main thing i wanted to be recovered However when i found the folder it said it was empty So here is my problem - Windows will not open - I cannot rescue recover data as something is interrupting the transferring of files onto an external hard drive - My Documents and Settings folder appears to be empty My computer uses Norton internet security and as far as i knew was fully updated Has a virus caused this do you think If you guys could give me some suggestions on what to do especially in trying to recover data from my Documents and Settings folder if it can be recovered i would really appreciate it thanks nbsp

I have had a new computer with Windows 8. When I started to save my documents it automatically went into OneDrive. I altered the settings so as it doesn't default to OneDrive but when I save my word documents they go into Documents. This file is under the heading of My PC. This is o.k. but in my documents folder, I have Outlook files and Symantec files. I don't want my word documents to go into this file as I may delete one of these subfolders. Can I either move the Outlook file and Symantec somewhere else, or can I make another document folder to save into?

Hey guys,

Had a power cut the other day, booted ok after but was a bit sluggish, rebooted to find it wouldnt boot because of a missing dll, tried to replace it but my entire windows folder was nowhere to be seen. Put the HDD in my other machine and it is indeed gone, kind of...

If I look at the properties of the entire disk it says 50gig used, whereas if I highlight everything in there (including hidden) it says 10gig. Also noticed that c:\documents and settings\*me* has gone, all the other users are still there, just not mine (which would make up the 40gig thats missing)

I'm guessing the headers are gone or something but the data is still physically there, tried running norton disk doctor on it and a chkdsk but nothing has brought them back.

Any Ideas?

Thanks, Leigh

A:windows folder and my documents...all gone

Which Dll file is missing? If you have a recovery console disk you might be able to use chkdsk /r to fix it. Some OEM computers have recovery console preinstalled.

Ok, I need some help..

I know that the documents library is a "library" and when I save anything there it really saves the file to the default location(my documents).

I teach a basic PC course usage course to seniors and some of the PCs are now listing the "My Documents" and the "Public" folders above their respective files when they click on "documents". In the past all the files have been there but never a separation by folder in the listing. There are 8 computers in the LAb and 4 show the "my Documents" and Public location in the listing....

How can I get this back to where they only see the whole list of files without the folder separation in the listing...

Thanks for any help, this is confusing them...

John

A:Viewing the documents library displays my documents folder

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like the default Arrange by, Sort by, or Group by folder view of the "Documents" library has been changed. You might see if doing what's in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial below to click on Clear changes in the "Arrange by" (on toolbar) drop down menu may help.

File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Hope this helps,

So i had some problems with my pc so i had my windows re-installed , but it probably didn't get formatted properly .

Some of my previous programs were there in C:\Program Files .Some worked , some didn't . I deleted the programs which didn't work , manually by pressing Shift+Del. So , today I found out that in my documents and settings folder i have a normal allusers and default user folder and Allusers.WINDOWS and Defaultuser.WINDOWS folders .

So now i want to delete these but i cannot because it shows that it is a folder required by system to run .

Help would be appreciated , thanks

Right...it is a system folder...and even if you delete it, it will reappear on reboot.

But you can delete the contents of such folders.

The files are still there because the harddrive space is the same as it was before the install. Its still 150GB/640GB free, like it was with vista. So where are all my downloads? I had over 300 irreplaceable videos!!!
What should I do?

They should look something like this:

.sys files are (mostly) drivers and this object can't be both a folder and a file - it must be one or the other.

A:Lost settings, New user made in Documents and Settings

Hiya asd123321.

It sounds like you`ve re-installed the system from CD over the top of an existing system, giving you a fresh `Dave`. Have you recently run a repair or indeed, done a clean install ?

As a work-around, can you take the documents & favourites from the old `Dave` and put them in the new `Dave` so at least you`re back up and running again.

Hi tech guys, today I experienced a lockup during Windows startup. I had some strange errors in the past days so it was a little expected. Kind of a big problem but nothing a Windows reinstallation can't fix.

Last time such a thing happened, it simply formatted my whole HDD, losing all my documents and programs. This time, I tried to only reinstall my windows folder using a boot from cd to keep my files. All worked as expected besides that I lost all my sessions. Since all my files are in a protected folder that can only be viewed a session that doesn't exist anymore I'm screwed.

How do I hack these protections and get my stuff back?

Hi:

My friends computer appears to have gotten a mean virus or spyware. Windows will not successfully start. I removed the drive and set it up as an external drive and scanned it with SuperAntiSpyWare, AVG and MalWarebytes Antimalware. All found some trojans and viruses, apparently removing them all. However, I still cannot access his profile or the administrator profile--all report access denied.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi:

I also tried booting up with an Ubuntu boot cd and I still couldn't access either the administrator or the user profile. Any ideas?

Tom

A problem I am having is Windows XP fails to load user data after I remove the hard drive, take ownership of the "My Documents" folder on a Windows 7 machine, and then booting up XP after putting the hard drive back into the old machine. Though this is expected after replacing the owner, I was not expecting that after taking back ownership on the XP machine, XP would still have a problem.

I have tried disabling account passwords on the XP machine before removing the drive, but this has yielded the same results. My question:
Is there a way I can "condition" files in XP before I remove the drive so that Windows 7 will allow me to access the data without having to take ownership? (most of the time I do not have to take ownership, its a just a few systems on which I have to take ownership)

A:Windows XP errors after taking ownership of My Documents folder on Windows 7

So far this has happened to three PCs including one I'm working on now.

On the first machine the userenv.dll file was causing problems in the registry, but I couldn't verify if it was related due to other problems Windows was having.

On the second machine it didn't matter since the OS was corrupt and I couldn't get XP to load.

The third machine needs a new motherboard due to audio hardware problems and I will be tinkering with it today.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

My girlfriend logs on with her user name Mary at the and and query Documents' 'My 'Documents Settings' XP Pro welcome screen Hers is the only user name shown In Control Panel Windows Accounts she is listed as the only user In Windows Explorer C Documents and Settings there are four folders All Users Config msi empty Default User Ex-husband s name it used to be his computer so somehow he is still around All the user data of my girlfriend is actually saved in folder four Also a At the top of the Windows Explorer tree the My Documents folder points to Ex-husband s My Documents folder b Later in the tree there is another folder called Mary s Documents which also points to Ex-husband s My Documents folder and contains the same files So my questions are 'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query Can I 'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query safely change folder four to my girlfriend s name Should can this be done in Windows Explorer or somewhere else Can should I delete the folder called Mary s Documents which simply reproduces the files in Ex-husband s My Documents Can I safely delete the folders All Users and Default User which do not contain my girlfriend s user data Can I safely delete the empty Config msi folder I would like to keep the My Documents folder which shows at the top of the folder tree as it is convenient for my girlfriend to find 'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query I hope this makes sense Any suggestions much appreciated Swish nbsp

A:'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query

1) I wouldn't, but it can probably be done...it's hard to redirect those stupid Windows links. You could create your own shortcut to "Mary's Documents", copy the contents of the ex-husband's folder to the Mary's documents, then you should be able to delete it.

2) For safety's sake I wouldn't, but you could give it a shot... (or do what I said above)

3)No, they are default folders that WIndows uses for some mysterious purposes.

4)Definitely not!

5)Go to theeldergeek.com to find a registry hack which will let you delete the My Documents folders. Then add the new shortcut above.

Remember, if you delete something you shouldn't have, you can restore it from the recycling bin!:grinthumb
