Taskbar stops showing previews

Q: Taskbar stops showing previews

So recently I've been using windows 7 a lot and every so often the task bar stops showing previews and starts showing tool tips and when I move the mouse off of the taskbar the icon remains highlighted as though my mouse were still over it the only way to fix it is to restart explorer.

anyone else ever have this issue and or know of a way to fix it?

Preferred Solution: Taskbar stops showing previews

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Flare561,
I think Windows Aero has to be enabled in order for the previews to show up. Are you turning it off perhaps? My VGA card did not qualify for Aero so I only see the words. Not the previews.

Have recently discovered that whenever I double click on a picture to view it in the picture viewer, it comes up with the border but the actual picture doesn't show up.

At the same time, whenever I use Windows Movie Maker, if I import pictures into it, they show up in the preview window when I left click on them at first, but when I drag them down onto the video editing track, they no longer show up on the preview.

Can anyone help me with this?

My laptop just updated itself to Windows 10, so I am adjusting to the new system and concept of W10. Anyway, I've noticed when I go to my pictures, it shows the pictures but it shows them as this -

Instead of their actual photograph, how can I get this to show the actual preview image like it use too in W7?

hello a question about the taskbar previews...
when i play a movie or any window with a dynamic movement inside it, i don't
see it live when i hover the window in taskbar...

for example, when minimizing a media player window, i don't see the video still running in the preview, only when the window is opened i see the video running.

so i guess this is set for saving in cpu, but how can i change it?
maybe a registry edit?

A:Vista taskbar previews...

Hello Shayx,

Double check to see if Windows Media Player is set as the default program with all of it's associations set with it. This tutorial will help show you how to if needed.

Default Programs - Program Default Associations

If that does not help, then see if turning the taskbar thumbnails off and on may reset it to allow it to show properly.

Hope this helps,

Hey all This may be a problem others have had but I've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find a good answer yet I'm dealing with a few bugs Taskbar and Disappear Alt-Tab Previews The first bug relates to alt-tab When I hold alt and press tab the pop-up with previews of Alt-Tab and Taskbar Previews Disappear each active window appears as it should however after about a half a second it disappears In that half a second I can quickly alt-tab from the active window to the one directly behind it and if I hold tab it quickly cycles through all the others with the pop-up staying up but the minute I let go of tab for the first time the Alt-Tab and Taskbar Previews Disappear pop-up disappears and nothing happens I have a similar problem with my taskbar The Aero theme includes the great feature of hovering the mouse over the icon for an open program to show a small preview of that window or all the windows in a given application When I do this the preview pops up breifly but then quickly disappears as well If I move my mouse slowly across the icon each time the mouse stops the preview refreshes but the preview disappears when I try to move my mouse over it to for example select one Word document out of that I'm working on A related bug to this may be that when I try to click-drag to reorder the icons on my taskbar the click-drag only quot grabs quot the icon for a half a second before releasing it even though my mouse is still down back to where it originally came from I'm running Windows Professional -bit on a refurbished Alienware M X that I received from Dell a few weeks ago in replacement of a dead Inspiron go figure how they made THAT decision Any help would be much appreciated Alt-Tab and Taskbar Previews Disappear I will gladly try to take screenshots or record video if any of my explanations were unclear Thanks

A:Alt-Tab and Taskbar Previews Disappear

Hello Azweibel, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can use CTRL+ALT+TAB , and press tab to cycle through the open windows instead to avoid them closing on you so fast.

Since this is a laptop, I bet it may be your tapping or sensitivity settings for your touchpad causing the pointer to lose focus while hovered over the taskbar icon's previews.

I like the feature where if I hover over a thumbnail, it will show just that window and hide all the other windows, so I can pop over to another window to check something and then resume working in my current window.

But the problem I have at the moment is that I have to move the cursor to the taskbar icon, and then move the mouse to the thumbnail. Anyone know of a way to let this work by just moving to the taskbar icon?

Okay, so I did a lot of searching and I thought I figured out what this option does (in the performance options within system properties). I thought it kept the thumbnail previews in the cache so when I hibernate or sleep, the previews will still be there. But that doesn't appear to be the case.

Usually, when I hibernate or sleep the computer, some of the previews don't show up and instead just shows the application's icon until I click on it and the preview gets saved again.

So basically, I see no difference between having this option checked vs not checked. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

A:save taskbar thumbnail previews - what does it do?

Hello terrorist,

It's basically to have the taskbar thumbnail preview windows above the icon to be saved to a cache to help the image in the thumbnail preview load quicker. If you don't have it turned on, then the thumbnail preview is loaded fresh each time when you hover over a icon on the taskbar of an opened window instead of from the faster cache.

The details pane used to show a thumbnail preview of the first page of Adobe Acrobat documents when I selected the file. I am no longer getting the thumbnail previews on my taskbar. It may or may not be related that when I booted up this morning, I got a blue screen (I didn't watch the boot process - not sure when it occrured) and had to reset the PC.

I have tried the four solutions here to no avail:
Taskbar Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

Except 1 because the homepage is down and the alternative source which I found is a .php file which I can only seem to open in gpedit or something and 2 because it doesn't apply.

Please, how do I enable my live thumbnail previews? I don't think I could have done it inadvertantly, because I haven't been toying with any settings.

I don't have the same screen as vista as listed here: Thumbnail Previews on Taskbar - Enable or Disable - Vista Forums

A:Disabling taskbar thumbnails (previews) in Windows 7

Just do it the same way as the tutorial, threw gpedit.msc. Enable it, click ok or apply and restart.
Or, if you don't want to restart..right click on the task bar and click on task manager, go to the process tab, select explorer.exe and end process. Then to restart it, click file on the task manager menu bar, new task-explorer.exe-OK. And it will work after that instead of restarting the computer.

Hi All,

I have noticed that if I open 10 internet explorers or a mixture of 10 different programs; when you hover over their taskbar icon displays a preview pane as normal, but as soon as I open 11 or more programs or internet explorers the previews turn in line discription bars (the images change into writings only) if this makes sense.

Question:

Is there any way that after 10 programs open the image previews can stay?

If I close down some programs or internet explorer tabs, down to 10 or less, the previews (images) come back.

Hope I explined the above properly?

The other day I noticed that all of the icons and previews (for images) were not showing when I am in a program and open a window for Save As../Open, etc. This happens in all programs. Attached is an example.

When I open the file location from within my computer all icons and previews work.

Things I have tried so far:

Control Panel>Advanced System Settings>Performance Settings - Made sure Show Thumbnails instead of icons is check.

Going through every folder and making sure in folder options that always show icons, never thumbnails was unchecked. I have tried numerous different scenarios.

I even went and installed custom icons. That is why it now shows some icons. Before it showed no icons at all.

I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to settings in windows and have been running Windows 7 since it came out. If anybody knows anything else I can try, please let me know.

You could try the following;

To fix this problem, follow these steps:
Close all open windows if a Close Open Programs Interaction dialog box is displayed.
Verify the Max Cached Icons registry value that locates in the following registry subkey equals to 4096:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Delete IconCache.db that locates in the following path:
Windows XP - %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data
Windows Vista or Windows 7 - %userprofile%\AppData\Local.

I am using Windows 7 in 5040x1050 resolution using Matrox TripleHead2Go.

The problem is that taskbar live previews appear to be automatically disabled at this resolution (only windows titles are shown). When I am using 5040x1050, they look like this:

When I switch to 1280x800 notebook display, the previews look like this (notice that the thumbnail is shown):

I get live previews in 3360x1050 too. But 5040x1050 doesn't work.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

I've got a problem with PowerTab Editor 1.7 .It went just fine until a week ago.I have no idea what the problem is.I've tried every malware scanning ( as much as i could ).But it seems to be the only software that have a problem. Others are just fine.
I try to run it while viewing the processes at Task Manager , PTEditor.exe just shows up and then disappears.
I reinstalled it but it didn't work either.
Please help me. I do need this program.
Thank you.
My OS is Windows XP Home edition SP1.

Toshiba Satellite A35-S159. XP Home with all Service Packs and Upgrades. Very careful about virus, spam, defrag, etc. Sometimes mouse quits working by not allowing clicks, sometimes cursor lags, sometimes its in taskbar or desktop only, sometimes both. Per Task Manager, it's unrelated to CPU usage.

Any ideas appreciated.

Am using Vista x64 Home Premium, FYI.

After using the right-click context menu on a taskbar item or toolbar icon, say to close a program, my taskbar stops responding. I can no longer select a different item in the taskbar or right-click anything. If I use ALT-TAB to switch to something else, the taskbar becomes functional again.

Any ideas what's going on here? This just started in the last several days but I can't for the life of me recall what I might have changed for this to start happening.

Thanks!

Sometimes when I boot up MSE doesn't show up in my taskbar. I set it to always show up, but it still doesn't. When I run MSE it says it is monitoring my computer and I am protected. Just wondering if there is any cause to worry over this?

A:MSE not showing up in taskbar

Maybe it is behind the little arrow "show hidden icons". If yes, just drag it from there to the taskbar.

A:Windows Explorer stops showing files or no file thumbnail

Try doing a CHKDSK on the drive that has Windows on it, also when was the last time you optimised the drive? Scan it and see if it finds any problems. It's best to do it from an install disk and go into Command Prompt and run CHKDSK from there, that way you can see the results as it works on the drive.

There are some programs that when it is in full/maximized window, it hides everything from the desktop.
The program that i am using is Zbrush 4R7, and the windows 10 taskbar shows when the program is maximized, which it is very annoying, and because of that, many options of Zbrush that is at the bottom becomes unaccesible unless I go in windowed mode.
So, is there a way to fix this issue with windows 10, because I was a windows 7 user and everything works fine, except in windows 10. Thanks.

I've been using Windows Seven and Microsoft Security Essentials since November and have been fairly happy with it. But today is the second time now that I've started my computer and the Icon for MSE is not appearing on the system tray on the task bar. If I go and click it on the desk top and run the program it says the real time protection is enabled and it looks like everything else is fine, but I guess I'm just a little paranoid that it's not appearing on the system tray. The strange thing, I'll restart the computer, and then its there upon start up on the second time. I checked the thing in the task bar properties where it says "show notifications" and that such and it doesn't look like its been changed or anything. Just thought that it was kind of odd that it'll work if I restart it on the second time.

A:MSE not showing up on taskbar first time

The real test to see whether MSE is protecting you, despite the missing icon, is if the services are running.

MsMpEng.exe is the security engine, used by Windows Defender and MSE.

msseces.exe is MSE itself.

After changing my keyboard settings, something happened with my taskbar so that it only shows two pinned icons, and I have to use these up and down arrow keys to scroll through the rest. This is incredibly annoying, as I can't figure out how to make it show all the icons again. My ThinkCentre button is hogging up the whole task bar, and any right clicks in the giant empty spaces right next to it will bring up options for the ThinkCentre.

A:taskbar showing just two icons; help!

Hello Yihwan,

It looks like you need to unlock your taskbar, drag the dotted lines separator just to the left of the blue circle icon (far right one) over to the left to decompress the other icons until the arrows to the right of the Chrome icon go away. After you get the icons dragged into the position you want, you can lock the taskbar again.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Right click the left-very down corner (where it is the taskbar again under the start button) and uncheck 'Lock taskbar'.
Now u should be able to reduce the size of that toolbar.
If you can't right click again > toolbars then uncheck the specific toolbars.

Hello,

First, thanks to all for all the previous help; appreciate it very much.

Re the bar on the bottom, which I guess is called the Taskbar:

Have several icons on it, which is fine.

But it won't accept any more new ones if I try to drag some onto it.

I right clicked on the bar and pulled up the Taskbar Tab under properties.
I have the Lock The Taskbar box un-checked, and have also selected
Never Combine next to the Taskbar Buttons: line.

Seems like it's still trying to pin the icons to others, and Not show them visually as completely separate icons in the bar.

What might I be doing wrong ?

BTW: also, any way of having the icon names Permanently displayed next to the icon on top or below the particular icon ?

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks,
Bob

A:taskbar not showing after waking from screensaver?

As far as it goes, there is a known issue with letting your computer sit for a period of time, and when the screen wakes, the mouse being able to move but the computer being unresponsive for a minute or so.

Try waiting a couple minutes and see if the computer become responsive, if so, this may be the same issue.

I noticed that, on the family computer, sometimes this weird icon shows up on the taskbar. When I right click it, it shows options to add keys, but I don't know if someone has access to the PC because of it or if it is triggered to open by something on the computer itself and is harmless.

I don't understand much about it. How can I get rid of this PuTTY? I can't find it if look it up on the PC, as suggested in this thread I found: https://forums.techguy.org/threads/putty-rnd-shows-up-in-my-files.826903/#post-6714012

Can someone help? Thank you

A:HELP!Start menu and taskbar not showing up!

Have you tried going to My Computer > Control Panel > Taskbar Properties. And uncheck "autohide" and checking "always on top."

If that doesn't work, then try moving the cursor to the bottom of the screen and right clicking. If you get a different menu click "properties" and then click "always on top," and uncheck "autohide."

Can anyone help? I had some malware on my computer and fixed it. Now, the computer takes longer to boot up and the taskbar does not show up. I can open a program on the desktop, but once its open I am not able to click on anything. The only way I can get the taskbar to show up is by opening up taskmanager. Then it mysteriously shows up. Can anyone help? Am I missing some start-up files that got deleted when I "fixed" my computer.

A:Taskbar not showing up unless I open taskmanager first

Hello Dianas, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I would say that the damage has been done, and it's time to format the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Vista. Be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose first though.

Sorry,

Does anyone know if there is a way to close the taskbar but still have the system tray showing? Or to move the system tray on it's own.

The reason I want to do this is because I use Vista64 with Nextstart and for some reason I lose the system tray

Any help would be appreciated

A:Close taskbar but have systray showing

Hello Belveder,

Sorry, but the notification area systray is a part of the taskbar and cannot be separated.

You might contact Nextstart support to see what they may say about this issue to see if they know of or make a solution to this for you hopefully.

Hi,

In Windows 7 you simply either hover the mouse over or click the 'Show desktop' button that sits immediately to the right of the date/time on the task bar:

If this isn't what you're looking for let me know in more detail what you're after. Hope this helps.

I recently converted to Windows 8(.1) from 7. When I had seven I'd play games in windowed (borderless) mode and tab out to my other monitor. It left behind a taskbar at the bottom overlaying the game I was previously on. I found this actually kinda helpful. Now in Windows 8 it only shows if I tab to a program on the same monitor as the game, and not if I tab to a program on my other monitor. Is there any way to change this?

Hello!

Norton 360 icon runs double in my taskbar. It's the only program that does it. But also, my emails have been doubling in two of my web accounts. I have noticed it on my phone, and web. I've sought help, but no one seems to fix it. Really tired of the seeing double stuff. Could I have malware stuck somewhere? Is Conduit a culprit? My PC also likes to connect to an old network ID that has been deleted from my profiles. I had renamed the ID an my PC wants to keep that name. It's like it's mad at me or something. I have to manually reconnect to the new ID name. My PC is running Win7, and it's about 5 yrs old. My fan runs hot a lot though, and the computer shuts down sometimes. I really need help here. Hate having multiple problems. Had these issue for a few months now.

You are running in Windows Basics mode. This means that there is a programme running that cannot support the advanced colour scheme Win7 uses. What have you recently installed and what programmes are you running?

When I start the computer everything appears to load fine, but theres no taskbar. I can move the cursor and highlight any icons on the desktop, just can't click on them. If I control/alt/del to start taskmanager, then evrything seems to work fine. This started after I picked up a trojan and got rid of it. Apparenently it also go rid of some system files too. I've done multiple system restores, sfc, and still no fix. Short of doing a non-destructive restore to fact. default is there anything else I can do?

Hello Chris,I see you have MBAM. Could you please post the MBAM report in your reply? I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.1. Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop. As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! so, a couple of days ago (actually a lot of days ago) i posted that i was getting all of the dialogs in ie to show up after running combofix... and after a longer period of testing, i've come to a conclusion where there are a LOT of dialogs of a LOT of applications showing up on the taskbar when they shouldn't. From SQL Server Management Studio, to Internet Explorer, also Dreamweaver (color picker shows up as a window on the taskbar)... any ideas on how that happened? i know it's not IE as i first thought, but probably one of windows settings

On the taskbar after I installed malwarebytes anti malware, the icon becomes one of those blank program icons.

How can I bring the right icon back? The original icon is also like this too. It happened minutes after I installed it.

Thanks!

A:MalwareBytes icon not showing in taskbar Windows 7

Hi Jemi200,

If you right click on Malwarebytes and select 'Properties', then under the 'Shortcut' tab click on 'Change Icon' at the bottom. You should see the Malwarebytes icon there. Select it and hit OK, Apply and OK.

See if that helps.

I had to do a clean install on a new hard drive and since then have not been able to get my task bar balloons to show. For example, when using the Safely Remove Hardware icon, I don't get the Now Safe To Remove balloon. I only get a popping sound. When running a Mcafee virus scans, I can't view the scan progress when resting the cursor over the icon. I do get the identifying pop up and that is all. I've tried the log off and on tip but it didn't work. Can anyone help me?

A:[SOLVED] taskbar icon balloons not showing

I solved my problem with TweakUI. It had the option to "enable balloon tips."

I recently had to reinstall XP SP3.
I've swtiched everything to Classic view.
Now theres a section of my taskbar, to the immediate left of the system tray,
with a little icon and "Add Hardwar" and ">>".
When I click the ">>", up pop all the icon links to everything in Control Panel.
How do I remove all this?
Thanks!

A:Control panel icons now showing in taskbar

Right click the taskbar, click Toolbars then Control Panel. You probably dragged it there by mistake.,

On windows 8.1, my taskbar, one day, suddenly stopped displaying the audio icon on the taskbar. When I right click it, go to the properties, and click customize, it doesn't show the audio icon as an option. When I click, "turn system icons on or off," I can see the audio icon, but it is locked to off. I don't know where to look from here.

A:[SOLVED] Not Showing Audio Icon On Taskbar

Method 1:
There is no option available in control panel volume settings to show volume icon like earlier operating system. In Windows 8 and 8.1 you can enable volume icon by modifying ?Turn system icons on or off? option.
Right click on or near time clock in notification area and select Properties.

Make sure Volume icon is set ?On? as shown below, if it were off, make it on to show volume icon.

If the above step hasn?t help, ?Restore default icon behaviors? which may bring back the missing icon.

This is the normal procedure to get back the volume icon. In case the Volume icon option ( on/off) grayed out and you can?t change it, then follow the method 2.

Method 2: If volume icon is missing and you can?t enable it from ?Turn system icons on or off? area, then that could be an issue with explorer process. The following two methods can solve the issue.
a) Kill the explorer.exe from Processes or Details tab under task manager. Find out all explorer.exe and kill them, make sure no explorer.exe is running in the task manager. After that, on the file menu select new process or Run (or new tasks), type ?explorer? and press OK. It will start the new explorer process. That should bring back the volume icon, if it hasn?t, redo the method 1

This method has brought back missing volume icon on my Windows 8.1 computer.
b) Registry modification- Its recommended to take a backup before modifying registry.
Open registry editor in Windows and find out;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

After modifying registry keys, you need to kill and restart the explorer.exe process to take effect.

I hope one of the above method will fix your issue!

As the title says I cannot see the date when hovering over the clock in the task bar.

I see a very brief flash of what could be the date only.

Any help appreciated.

A:Date not showing when hovering over clock in taskbar.

Hover over other items in system tray. They work?
Did you reboot already... but still same problem?

Hi,

I was wondering if you could help. My friend's computer has recently become very, very slow in starting up and when it loads it shows all icons except for My Computer and My Documents, and the Start Menu including taskbar and time. Is there any way to restore these? Ctrl Alt Del kinda kills it.

It's rather full (2.2gb left from 74.4) but he's now deleting some files. Would you like a HijackThis report to ensure it's not a virus? Did a scan on McAfee and it's clean, checked CMOS/BIOS settings and it's not hot or overclocked. Any help'd be appreciated, if you need to know anything else about the computer ask away, it'd be great if you could help. :)

A:XP not showing explorer.exe taskbar, My Computer/My Documents

I had this problem before, and it was a virus. In fact, it was a trojan.
Every time I would reboot or start my computer it wouldn't show the desktop at all. So I would have to open task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL),
close explorer.exe ,and run explorer.exe, which usually does the trick.

There's always system recover, that is, if you have the disk.
And if you're worried about your data I would suggest buying a storage device or blank CD's or Dvd-R's and saving them there. But only save valuable data, like irreplaceable things such as photos, and so on. Music can be downloaded later, and programs too. Take as many as screenshots too. But that's what I'd do.

Yesterday my Windows 10 was running fine until I came back from a shower.
I started up my computer logged into Windows and when I logged in the desktop was black and all I had was a mouse cursor. I opened task manager and I restarted "explorer.exe" but still nothing. I loaded up Google Chrome through the "Run New Task" option in the task manager to start looking up solutions. I've tried so many things, I've scanned for viruses and tried a few things I've seen on other posts.
For everyone else the solutions offered seemed to have worked but not for me.
One post suggested that it might be a virus that is inside windows files.
I don't remember downloading anything that day so I don't know if it can be a virus.
I need help.
