I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yesterday I started getting BSOD errors randomly. Happened 3 times, was all very sudden. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic a few times, all checked out. I formatted and reinstalled Windows, hoping to have everything fixed. After reinstalling some of my programs, another BSOD hit. So I'm hoping maybe it's one of the programs I use, and not a hardware failure. Can anyone help?

A:BSOD even after full reset

Hi Malphegor,

Welcome to the 10forums

Please try to update the BIOS to version F3 and let us know how it goes
Although your Gigabyte doesn't support updates for your motherboard after Windows 7, a BIOS update may help

If a BIOS update doesn't help, let us know with another zip from the DM Log Collector from the BSOD Posting Instructions and we'll go from there

After having been hit on two different computers with W8, I have done full resets and come out clean... or so it seems.

Now I learn that the full resets are not 100% effective. Is it possible that it's totally effective with some malware, but not other?

What do Windows 8 Refresh and Reset my PC really do? - Super User

The PC boots into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE).Windows RE erases and formats the hard drive partitions on which Windows and personal data reside.Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows.

So assuming your recovery partition was not infected (if you use that not install media) then it should be OK. It might be more convenient to make an image of your whole drive (with all your partitions, programs etc) before getting the virus so you can wipe (and zero) the drive and re-install that. You could use something like Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

Hi I have a Samsung NP R E operating Windows I was recently hit by the windows update issue on th August and ended up having to do a full reset to factory settings See Windows Microsoft update breaks computers and forces them to keep rebooting - News - Gadgets and Tech - The Independent Since the reset I have had a permanently dim screen I am unable to adjust the brightness via the keyboard the side-bar tool or the power plan settings Dim full screen problem reset after That is all are set to brightness but the screen is too dim and lowering any below does not lower the screen brightness any further Because of the reset my computer is awaiting many many 'important' windows updates I intend to install most of these but because I am wary of another problem I am installing them slowly with frequent system back-ups It's possible the solution to my problem is one of these updates but I am unable to tell them apart The vast majority are labelled either 'security update' or just 'update for windows ' and offer no more information on what they're for I found another thread about a dim screen problem here Laptop screen Dim screen problem after full reset brightness won't adjust Because this person's issue was caused by a driver update issue I decided to install the latest Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows but this didn't help I also thought to try older versions of the graphics driver but these are not available from Intel They do seem to be available from Samsung but on the support page for my model the VGA downloads are all for Windows even though mine is Windows Could it be a general windows update that is required rather than a driver Any advice would be appreciated

I have Dell Insprion z15 5523 ultrabook that i used for two years. I never had any problems, but i will reinstall windows for security measures. However i decided to reset it to factory settings first, Now it says that only 280 from 450 GB are free on my memory. How is that possible since nothing is installed except a few movies? Is something wrong or its just me being totally unaware. Once i preinstall the windows will it free more space (not that i need it, just wondering) I am with windows 8 after the reset..

Look in your c drive for a Windows.old file if it is there do a disk cleanup and select remove old windows installations..
Windows.old takes up sometimes 100GB
Note - you can not just delete this file unless you boot from a live CD like hirens of ubuntu.

When Windows cannot be installed from Acer Recovery Management, you could use the Recovery CDs or DVDs to re-install all original software.

A:Multiple error BSOD- even after full system reset

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP
We could also use some system information, which you can get easily by running msinfo32.
To do that go to start>run>type msinfo32>enter

When it is finished running go to file>save>name it and upload to us here.
You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I'm using windows 7 Home Premium and encounter problems upgrading to Windows 10 (BSOD during instillation) and now my laptop doesn't recognise the original operating system.

I purchased a new recovery disk from Advent, however as the process begins the re-installation of Windows I get notified of Windows.Win error (generally around 25%) which ejects the disk, restarts the laptop and takes me back to square 1.

The laptop was bought from Dixons and has recovery software behind a partition, but the same problem occurs if I try to install from the Hard Disk Version.

Can anyone advise me where to go next?

I used the media profile to download Windows 10 to a USB and everything worked fine but now there's another problem. My laptop was working after reinstalling Windows, but then I shut my laptop over and went away for ten minutes or so and I've came back to a black screen with no display at all. The white LED is on so my laptop is on. It has around 40% charge in it as of typing this. The screen is unresponsive. Please help again but thank you for helping me fix the first issue.

A:Re: I hard reset my laptop, error occurred and now my laptop...

Hi @kirsty_mcq17, Thanks for the update on your situation. I understand that you are now having issues with the display being blank and the system unresponsive. Have you tried doing a hard reset since the system stopped responding? If the system will not boot into Windows normally, let me know if you get any errors. You can also try using Safe mode. Once you are able to log back in, please make sure you download the latest HP drivers and Windows Updates. From what you described, it sounds like the system may have gone into sleep or hibernate mode. This document will take you through troubleshooting possible issues with those features. If you feel this post has answered your question, take a moment to click Accept as Solution. Thanks!

So I reset it and I got a blue screen error, then a listing screen with a popup box saying there was an error or my computer restarted and I should press OK to install. I found a solution online to get past the popup box, I don't remember what it was though, but now my laptop is stuck in a state of constant reboot. It goes like this:Blue HP Logo with loading circle,Black screen,Blue HP Logo,Installing and configuring Windows install screen that doesn't move past 64%,And then black screen. If a full factory reset with full drive cleaning option selected is performed, does one have to do Windows 10 updates all over again or does Windows reload itself using whatever has already been installed via Windows Updates?

A:Windows 10 full factory reset - do I have to do Windows Updates all over again?

A factory reset by definition is a restoration to whatever state the image came in from the factory. It shouldn't be a surprise that this means any updates not included in the image will need to be redownloaded and installed as needed.

Try holding the Esc key down while booting and the press F11 to run the system recovery.  If this does not work, you might have to boot from a recovery USB to restore the laptop.  If you did not create one, you can order one from HP.  If this has Windows 10 on it, you can also do a fresh install using the downloadable installation media from Microsoft.

Log-in with the account you just created. Go to Start, settings, Control Panel, User Accounts. Click on the name/account and click remove.

If the above doesn't work... Re-boot laptop, press F2 until you get to a black screen. Go to Safe Mode (using the UP Arrow key) Here you'll be logged-in as the Administrator. Follow the above procedure starting from "Go to Start, Control Panel..."

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 on my hands. It's a definite problem child. Sometimes it recognizes the hard drive, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it sees the CD-ROM drive, sometimes it doesn't. But it is very sporadic and I have done hardware testing with Hiren's Boot CD. Everything seems to be fine. So one of my next guesses is that the BIOS or something is screwed up and decided that I need to reset the CMOS. But I have never done it to a laptop before and have no idea where to start. Help? Please?

A:Laptop CMOS reset?

Go to and then to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag number from the bottom of your laptop.
You can also click on Technical Support there to get a copy of your original configuration if you do not know it.
Then download the BIOS file: BR114952 for a floppy disk install, or I2200A07 or I2200A07.txt.
Read all the instructions, then go ahead to install. it is pretty safe compared to most other brands.
Also download and install your chipset drivers if your computer was built before 01/17/2006. In fact, I would download and install all drivers with release dates more recent than your purchase.
But be aware that you could have both defective hard drive and defective CD-Rom drive.

"User profile service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"

So, I did Shift + F8, and got on the menu to reset me laptop, but it had an Error 80071490
I went online on my phone and I searched up the error and it had no results on the Error.

The problem is that I can't login, or reboot.
So I can't logon to fix the Error, and I can't reboot because of the error.

Can anyone help?
It would mean very much to me, since I have to spend a large sum to replace a 9 month old laptop.

Hi!  The 840 G3 appears to have a battery compartment that is secured by screws.  Sometimes there is a combination of keys that can be pressed that will simulate the function of a power reset (powering the laptop down, removing the battery, pressing the power button for a length of time to drain capacitors, replacing battery, and powering up) so that users don't have to remove the battery.  I've googled and found some key combinations for other HP products but can't find one for the 840 G3.  Does anyone know of one? Thanks!

Hi, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! I am not 100% sure if I understand you but I'll try to help. As mentioned by you and as confirmed by the product's manual, it comes with non-removable fixed battery. May be you want to perform hard reset to power off the computer >> Why do you want to perform this you write about ? Is there some issues with Windows ? If so, have you tried restarting it (instead of Shut down) ?  Because in Windows 8/8.1/10 this process is by default different from what it was in Windows XP/Vista/7.

when I turn my computer on all I get is a black screen and it says enter password. If I hit F2 it sends me to a screen that says phoenix securecore (tm) setup utility

A:how can i reset the password on my laptop?

What happened immediately preceding this? Did you use a software program to possibly set a hard drive password? It could also be a BIOS/User password. If you go into the BIOS Setup, use your Tab and arrow keys to find Security information and see if there is an Administrator/System or User password. If someone else has physical access to your computer, check and see if he/she might have changed something.

My wife got a new Dell laptop 6 months ago and set up her account and password.  Long story short...she used it twice and 6 months later can't remember password.  Support says we are locked out and will charge 119.00 to do a hard reset.  No thanks.  I googled and found the F8 suggestion and get a F12 boot menu, but never get the advanced menu, or repair my computer choice i should have to do a hard reset?  Nothing is on the PC and i just want to start from scratch.  She didn't create any back up disks.
Can anyone help?  It shouldn't be this hard? Its an Inspirion 15 3000 series (3558 to be exact)

Acer normally has a click here to begin that process under a certain subdirectory. Because my Acers no longer carry that hidden partition or the acess menu -- I can't remember where that menu was. c:\program files or c:\program files (x86) might be places to start, if such have not been overwritten yet.

I just posted another thread and got my answer there via the Nero Info Tool 5. This tool was awsome and it showed me something more that made me think:

When I go to the window called "Hardware" it shows me my hardware specs and not everything adds up: It says that my RAM is at 2Gig but it should say 4Gig. What does this mean?

Another thing: Same tool says that my graphic-card needs an update but when i go to update it, it says that it has the latest update.

A:Laptop not using full power of my RAM?

Please fill in your system specs, though I will also reply with my suspicions without those.

Windows of any version in 32-bit will only address 4 GB of memory, max. You likely also have an integrated video card, which will use "shared" memory, taking memory from your RAM, decreasing the amount of memory available to the system.

I've not used one with a QHD. And it will likely largely depend on your eyesight. But I find even 1920x1080 on a screen smaller than 22" starts to become hard to read. I'd recommend viewing one in person before making a decision.

Can anyone help me?
I recently purchased a laptop from a company that i used to work for which went into administration. I can log on with my details as normal, but I am unable to install software or complete any upgrades as it keeps asking for Administration password. I have tried calling the IT people that took care of the laptops for this but they are not responding back regarding the password. When I use to have upgrades done the IT people would do this remotely. I have contacted Toshiba, who have said I will need to order a recovery disk, but this will wipe out all data. Does someone know of less drastic action?

A:Laptop full of trojans

Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Hi please tell me how to take my laptop back to original settings as it is infected with numerous trojans.

Im using windows vista

Sarah x

There may be a number of ways you can accomplish that depending on the make and model of your computer and whether you have a Vista installation disk available or not. You would be best helped at our Windows Vista/Windows 7 Support forum for that.

However, if you wish to try cleaning the system off the malware, we want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and

Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? First Steps

a link at the top of each page.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined below. Use a USB flash drive to download and transfer the tools to the affected machine, if necessary. You might like to run the Flash_Disinfector.exe on the clean machine and the flash drive first to protect against any possible transfer of infection via USB.

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

Hi I'm having trouble with my Dell XPS 9550. I'm currently running Windows 10 Pro and since late August my laptop will not install the cumulative updates Microsoft puts out. It begins to install it and after an hour it gets to 100% and then says update failed uninstalling update and it stays like that for another hour. I've contacted Microsoft over the issue and everything they've tried won't work. I've tried resetting Windows 10 and that fails, reinstalling Windows from a disc image fails, everything fails. I've searched for hours trying to find a solution trying different Commands and system checks in the command prompts and nothing will work.

Similar problem with Dell XPS 8300 (Win 7 converted to 10).  For months it's been the spinning wheel on a black screen that won't complete. Usually resolved by restarting many, many times. Neither Dell nor Windows diagnostics suggest a problem. A particularly persistent set of hangups occurred yesterday. This morning, a restart has produced a persistent gray "Getting windows ready, don't turn off your computer" screen. I'll see where it goes.

The only way to reset the "memory" on the battery is to completely drain it.
Unfortunately, draining it once a week has probably worn it out.
Should only drain it when it shows signs of not fully charging.

Hi guys,

I recently got my old gaming laptop repaired (it has a dodgy charging port that has broken 3 times now). It had been sitting gathering dust for over a year but i fancied playing Pillars of eternity.

Got the thing repaired and decided to do a factory reset as it was full of crap i don't use and wanted to start from scratch. However, after the reset everything seems incredibly slow and unresponsive. Ive run various virus checkers and programs to check the memory and hdd but everything comes up fine? I'm not sure what else to look at.
Curiously, games (such as Pillars of Eternity or Chivalry) seem to run fine but have unbearable load times.
If anyone has an idea of what to do next i would greatly appreciate it.

Michael510 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about problems resetting your laptop and wanted to help -- but need more information. If you can, please follow the directions in this link to find the detailed product number of your PC: that is not possible, then look for a sticker on the PC that includes the product number and post that here.  If the battery is removable, the sticker is likely to be in the battery compartment. I see you're running Win10.  Did the PC come preinstalled with Win10? Or, did you upgrade it from a prior OS to Win10?  If you did the upgrade, how long ago was that, and what was the prior OS? If there was a prior OS, were you trying to reset it to the prior OS, or were you trying to reset it to Win10? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Hello. I have a Lenovo G500s Touch laptop running windows 8 with 6gb of ram and 1tb hard drive. When I first got the computer it worked great but it started to slow down. I used to be able to run Guitar Hero 3 at full speed, but now its quite laggy, and doing anything on the computer lags. I think I have enough RAM. I ran antivirus, antimalware, and it didnt speed it up so I decided to do a windows 8 refresh, which restores to factory settings, and removes all programs, but keeps media files but my computer didnt speed back up. What should I do?

Due to my inspiron15 Dell laptop running extremely slow, I did a factory reset to original factory settings. It worked fine and the laptop came with Windows 8. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 using the free one still available from Microsoft for people who use disability functions (my mum uses magnifications). However, when turning on it gets stuck on the Dell Logo page with no bar underneath. I have attempted another factory restore as I have managed to get it to run automatic repair but it says that the partition has changed and there is no restore point to work from and won't let me continue. Can you please suggest what I may do to fix this problem?

I have a dell inspiron 1000. Older model, runs windows xp. I just simply want to reset to factory settings but am not sure of what key combonation to use. Ive called dell, they wont help because my warranty is up and they asked me to pay 50 dollars for a month warranty. Id much rather donate such an amount to someone more grateful. Also being that it is a laptop it also is having a battery recalibration problem, wondering if it needs a new battery or if thats even possible. Starting to feel completly helpless with these simple problems, if anyone could help id be forever grateful.

I have a dell laptop (windows 7) but I don't remember the password to get on. Is there anyway to reset the computer that doesn't require the password?

A:How to reset My Dell laptop password

Thank you for writing to us!
If you are talking about the operating system password then you can do a factory rest or reinstall the operating system ( note that there will be data loss)
In case of the BIOS password then kindly write to us @DellcaresPro on twitter or Delltechcenter on facebook.
Kindly private message the service tag and email address .

Bluescreen then reset much at all I try using the windows CD on it and it does nothing I even tried to use the CD via a bootable flash drive and nothing sure it'll say the usb IS bootable but when I select it it gives me the HP loading screen and then a black screen I even tried waiting for an hour to see if it's just loading but nothing has anyone else had this problem with this laptop and if so do you know if there's a way to fix it thanks in advance

Windows 8.1. I inherited a Samsung Model 365E505 laptop. When I turn it on to the sign-in there is a name there and a box for the password. I was able to access the unit because I was supplied the password. I succeeded in changing the password, but I want to change ownership of the unit, so I can see my name there when I go to sign-on. Laptops are new to me, so I need help. Thanks.

This isn't really a problem, more of a curiosity. I tried to ask this once but my question kind of disappeared into the void. So I factory reset my asus laptop with windows 10 just a few days ago. About 10-15 minutes ago I noticed (ashamed that I didn't notice this sooner) that my background picture was the exact same as before the factory reset. This is a picture that I downloaded from my Facebook and set as my background. There's no sign of this picture still being saved. It's not in the Pictures file or anywhere else that I can find. So I'm just wondering how/why is it still the background picture even though it should have been deleted when I reset my laptop?

It's because you have a setting attached to your Microsoft account to sync personalization settings. So things like lockscreen settings, background settings, and theme settings are all attached to the account. Since you use the same Microsoft account to log into the laptop after you reset it, it used the personalization settings associated with that account.

A:How to I reset my new Envy laptop password

The password that I need to change is for the computer.  I did change my password on my windows account which had no effect on unlocking the new laptop.  I just bought it from Costco in Kanata.  The number on the receipt is 17-K273ca.  It is probably a product that is on ly sold by Costco.
