Preferred Solution: don't have the "properties" option for wireless network

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

yeah. I have a new compaq laptop running vista home.

I am trying to setup and connect to my wireless network manually.

I go into network + internet, network and sharing center, and click "set up a connection or network"

in other versions of vista there is usually a "Manually connect to a wireless network" option.

BUT IT'S MISSING NOW. SO HOW DO I ENTER MY SSID MANUALLY? WTF?

No wonder why people say vista sucks.

How can I select Manually connect to a wireless network + enter my SSID so I can connect?

Thanks

A:"Manually connect to a wireless network" option missing... WTF?

Well... If you go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > on the left side of the window click Manage network Connections you should see your wireless network, double click it, click Wireless Profiles > Security and there you can manually setup your wireless security options

Hi everyone -

Since the new year, I have observed in a few systems including the one I use most frequently, that a right-click on any program or file brought up in the start menu brings up only one selection - "Properties". And when selected, "Properties" brings up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" screen - just as if I were clicking on the Quick Task bar itself and selecting Properties.

I haven't really gotten into this yet and before I do, I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced anything like this or knows what may be the underlying cause.

All virus and malware scans are clean; DSS incorporting HiJackThis are free and clear of debris.

Thank you. . .

A:Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Hello mate i had the exact same problem!

If you open the registry editor and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

There you should find a key called "NoChangeStartMenu".
Make sure the value of this is set to 0 and if not change it.

Also check here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You should find the same key "NoChangeStartMenu"
And make sure this is also set to 0.

Restart your computer and your problem should be solved.

You can't change the icons for files in Windows. The icon that is displayed will either be a thumbnail or the associated programs icon.

You can only change the icon of shortcuts in Windows. If you need help doing this then let me know.

You can also change the icons of programs (.exe files) with programs such as Resource Hacker:

And if you need help doing this then I would be happy to help you.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I am trying to configure a home network to share printers and files, but for some reason one of my two computers cannot see the other. My laptop cannot see my desktop when I go to "Network" but it can see my other wireless devices. My desktop can see everything on the network, including the laptop. I have checked all the firewalls, including McAfee settings.

One thing that I found to be strange was that in Network Properties for my wireless network, the desktop shows "networking" AND "sharing" tabs, but the laptop is missing the "sharing" tab. I think that this might be the problem.

Also, I forgot to mention that the desktop can ping the laptop, but the laptop will not ping the desktop.

Hello Usually for test environments with a few machines I used to make NAT Networks on VirtualBox since version when they introduced that option Now I'm trying to do something similar with VMWare I noted that in VMWare in the Virtual Network Editor you can only have one Bridge network per phisical network adapter one NAT network which allows you to configure a gateway and many host-only networks as you want As I understood I think that NAT in VMWare do "NAT VirtualBox's about VMWare on Network" Doubt option something similar as the default NAT network on VirtualBox the one you don't have to create or give it a name Now seeing that I can't add new networks with NAT type I can't think a way to get something similar to quot NAT Networks quot function of VirtuaBox which would allow me to have personalized subnets that have a gateway on the IP to allow all machines of that network use it as default route to Doubt about "NAT Network" VirtualBox's option on VMWare Internet I saw while googling that in VMWare there is another type of network called quot Doubt about "NAT Network" VirtualBox's option on VMWare Custom quot I can select it on every virtual machine from a dropdown menu but after selection it i'm unable to configurate any options to it using the Virtual Network Editor It doesn't show up in this window and if I add it with the quot Add Network quot option I have to select Bridge NAT or host-only network type so I have to select host-only cause both other options are limited to one entry What am I missing Thanks

Hi, I need to find a fix for this issue I have with a change in Windows 8. I am running Windows 8 Pro and normally (in windows 7 and older) when I Right click on a folder, the default option for properties is "r". Nice and quick and next to my
left hand which rests on the left side of the keyboard. Now it has changed to "o" and not only that, there are 2 options for "o". Open and Properties. Very frustrating and not very easy to get around. Any way of getting around this whether
it be alternative software or reg hack or something... anything. Itsvery annoying.
Cheers

The quot Idle-time Full System Scan quot in Norton v is bogging down my computer constantly and there is no option to turn it off in quot Automatic Tasks quot I contacted Norton and after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting quot hung-up quot on over Norton chat Inexcusable I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option quot for security reasons because they didn t want people turning it off quot The problem is people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks under quot Settings Norton option Tasks" available under "Virus Scan" No v4: 360 "Settings/Automatic Scheduling Schedule Manual Schedule quot and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning Once the system has completed a full system scan all files are on-access scanned anyway so running a full system scan every - days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially because it will continue to try to run every time the system Norton 360 v4: No "Virus Scan" option available under "Settings/Automatic Tasks" is idle if you cancel it A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks and after explaining the risks would be VERY preferable Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month week The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks In fact the BEST solution would be the option to change the scheduling options for EACH automatic task INDIVIDUALLY--with the option to change EACH one to quot Automatic Weekly Monthly Manual quot By forcing people to turn off ALL automatic tasks in order to control that ONE idle-time virus scan option ALL or NONE Norton has made the security problem they are trying to avoid much worse So in the mean time does anyone know a registry setting that will turn off quot Idle-time full system scans quot un-check the invisible box without turning off the other automatic tasks nbsp

I am running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. Whenever I set the option "Turn off the display" to "Never", it reverts back to the default "15 minutes". This is under the "High Performance" profile. I have never, since Windows 3.11, ever had a setting change itself back. I have tried to change it and restart. It will either revert upon restart or shortly after. It will revert back even if I do not restart.

A:Power Option for "Turning off display" remains at "15 minutes"

That sounds like my problem - I leave the computer for an hour and it is shut down (I think sleep mode). I just need to hit the power button and it comes on to where it was when I left - but 2 of my USB devices are lost so I have to restart the computer anyway.

I changed all the power settings to NEVER. But his doesn't seem to make any difference......

Running XP on 2 computers. Have them connected by a router. I set the router IP to 192.168.3.1 Everything connects great! When I connect to a wireless network, it all connects, but doesn't work ("connection timed out" or "Page not found" errors. The wire connection shows an IP of 192.168.2.1. If I disable my Local Area Network, the internet connects perfectly. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I CAN USE MY LOCAL AREA NETWORK AND THE WIRELESS CONNECTION AT THE SAME TIME! Frustrating to the max! Any network specialists out there who can tell me how to fix this? Thanks!!!

You should know that x.x.2.1 is incorrect. For the router address shown, all devices that connect to it *must* be 192.168.3.x where x > 1 and < 255.

I would suspect that you have some static configuration data in the devices.

You want your router to offer DHCP in the range 2->32 (that's more than enough) and
you want all systems to use DHCP for the IP address and DNS settings.

Remove anything in the Alternative Configurations

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

I recently had my computer crash due to a TROJAN virus and at that time I had Windows XP service pack 3 which my computer man installed for me. After being infected I had to completely reinstall EVERY thing on my computer taking my computer back down to Service Pack 1 the only operating disks I had. Now when I do a Disk Clean Up, it doesn't have the option to "Compress Old Files." Can some one please tell me why this option is not there and how I could go about fixing this. Thank you.

Hi,

For several days my wireless connection has been connecting and disconnecting. Today I tried connecting to wireless and cannot actively see any wireless networks available. My wireless switch is on and is showing a blue light and Network Adapters in Device Manager show no warnings however when I run diagnose in Network Sharing Centre it tells me that Network Adapter "Wireless Networks Connection" is not connected.

The Wireless Router is fine and another laptop and iPad seem to have no problems connecting to it please could you advise?

I am running Windows Vista on a Vaio VGN FE41S

Many thanks,

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.
please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Type the following command
Ping {then a space and then add the number that is shown against the item labelled "default gateway" shown in the results from the ipconfig /all}
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.Click to expand...

A:Advanced boot option doesn't show the option "repair your computer"!

On my clean OS install, the "repair your computer" option also does not appear in the F8 Advanced Boot Options list.
The option does appear on my ACER PC.

You can access this option by booting from a System Repair CD/DVD. A system repair CD is a must have.

Recently my computer has been very slow in logging in and shutting down. Also my computer has been freezing for atleast 20 seconds or more until I have to just shut it down. I also found last night that my Malawarebytes scanner found this "Rogue Installer" which I deleted. My computer is still running slow to shutdown so I'm not sure if this program is still in. Actually, for a few months I had been having some trouble(intrusions) with some type of virus.

Today, I wanted to try to clean the computer on Safe mode. I tried numerous of times by clicking fast or holding down the f8 key for safemode but nothing happens.

My second option was mscongfig box but I found there was no "BOOT. INI" option. I'm not sure if there is a way to restore this option? If not, is there an easier option to generate safemode? Thanks

I am unable to rename it now. It shows an error "Cannot rename this connection. A connection with the name that you specified already exists. Specify a different name."

When I started uni, I had to change settings on my browser(Firefox) and computer to connect to the university network. The instructions for which or here if they are any help (Configure your laptop/PC :: Wireless Access at Aberdeen - DIT, University of Aberdeen click on windows7).

Currently, the wireless network I'm trying to connect to is a BTHomeHub with "shared" "WEP" settings. What do my computer settings need to be for this?

Hopefully someone can help, thanks :)

Hi folks. This is after doing an upgrade from Server 2008 to Server 2008 R2 mind you. Not sure if that matters.

I was having problems with RDPing to my Win7 clients so I checked that remote desktop was enabled. When doing so I saw that it informed me that I had to allow rdp access in the firewall which I know had been done before. After looking around I realized that my network profile had been changed to "Public". I also noticed that my active network shows as "unauthenticated". What does this mean and how can I fix this? How did this happen? Thanks.

A:Network shows as "Unauthenticated"....Changed my network profile to "Public"

How many DCs are there in the domain?
I suggest that you remove the Windows 7 computer from the AD, and exit the Windows 7 computer from domain. Then, re-join the computer to the domain. How does it work now?
If the issue persists, please temporary disable the firewall on both computers. Also, please check if Network Location Awareness service is enabled on the server and Windows 7 computers.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hello all. I'm running Windows 7 professional on an HP 4320s probook. I recently uninstalled some of the HP programs because I never used them (sorry can't remember which) and now I cant connect to the internet. I get the error message in the thread's title.
I've tried ipconfig/release and the fix that has netsh ip textlog in it and i've also disabled the IP helper. None of these have worked. I looked for webroot in services.msc but couldnt find it so i don't think that's the problem either.
Any ideas?

I have an old Sony Vaio (VGN S4HP, to be precise), recently reinstalled XP and now I cannot get to connect to my wireless router network. Tried practically everything proposed on older threads but nothing worked. I may be wrong, but I believe the problem was present before the reinstall so the local techie had to set up a static IP to connect to the router. How do I go about doing this myself? I don't have my router's manual.

A:Unable to connect to wireless network. "Internet connection is too slow."

if the router is working with a cable connection, then its unlikely to be the modem , unless thats also a router and you are using it for DHCP

you say the modem is connected by cable to the router
and any device connected to the router by cable works perfectly - is that correct

on the old router - have you removed the wireless security and see if you can connect ?

carried out a full power cycle - see below

also it would be worth making a note of the router configuration and do a factory reset on the router and re setup and try again

with a PC connected by a cable direct to the modem can we see an ipconfig /all
now do a power cycle and connect the router
with a PC connected by a cable direct to the router can we see an ipconfig /all

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes. We have found in some instances you need to wait at least 15 minutes
Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

Hi chaps

Bit of trouble with home computer (family)

Running with XP - after two or three start ups I lose my wireless connection and have to
1.right click on the start-up menu (bottom right of screen) on the icon of a PC Monitoir with a red X next to it.
2.Click on Wireless Connection Properties -
3.click Wireless Networks Tab -
4.finally check the "Use Windows to congiure wireless network settings" and click OK

Bit of a long winded solution.

I think there must be a conflict somewhere between which application controls the wireless network - but I don't know how to resolve. Any ideas?

There are - when the wireless network is running fine - two icons on the start up bar both telling me about the status of the home network - one is a series of 5 horizontal bars; the other is a monitor with two )) (green) brackets.

Thanks

Yesterday, I started to recieve messages that I was infected with the "Cloud Protection" virus. From research, I understand it affects the computer with false warnings and also affects internet connection. I used another computer to run Malwarebytes and Combofix. Combofix cleaned the computer of any virus and malwarebytes cleaned up after it. Since then, I have not any leftovers from the virus. It seems to be gone.
Now, my problem is I still have no internet and the more I do research it seems I am missing registry files.

Netbios and netbt.sys files are two of the files I am sure were missing.

Is there a way to approach this so I can not only do a system recon, but also get it up and running again without reinstalling windows.

I am running XP.

I put in the wireless software, typed in the correct ID and password, and it says I'm connected, but I'm not, and the network icon on the taskbar is stuck on "acquiring network address".

The wired computer is working fine, so there's definitely no problem there.

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter, but that didn't do anything.

Tried restarted the computer. That didn't do anything, either.

What's the problem?

I'm not sure if this will help any, but just so you know, I recently reinstalled Windows on this computer. Not sure if that's relevant or not.

I just did a clean install on my windows 7 ultimate 32 bit computer to 64 bit. At first, my wireless internet was working fine, but it suddenly dropped to "limited access". I'm using a Linksys WUSB100 ver. 2 wireless network USB adapter. I've already tried downloading the latest driver for windows 7 64 bit, 3.0.3.0 from the Linksys website. I've also tried restarting my computer and the wireless modem. I did a system restore to the point where it was last working but it still isn't working. So recently I've come across this problem in Windows Vista with my laptop where I right-click the network icon in the lower-right icon tray and then select the "connect to network" button that I use to connect to my wireless router... However, when I click on this button, nothing happens. No error message or anything. I even try accessing it through the start menu, control panel, etc. and it does not bring up the window that lists the available wireless connections.

When I had this problem before, I simply did a system restore and it worked, but my restore points have been deleted so now I am stuck. I tried Spy-Bot, AdAware, Norton to check for viruses, but nothing was found. I also tried a clean boot using msconfig to test for software compatibility issues, but that didn't work either.

Any ideas? Could it be a virus or something?

A:My wireless network shows "limited connectivity" but has good signal,

It looks like you have a possibly good ethernet connection through a broadband modem. Are you having trouble with this connection?

We cannot help with your attempts to connect to a neighbor's network because you are violating the law and/or the neighbor is violating the terms of service of his ISP.

I recently bought my son a D-Link DWA-25 USB Wireless adapter for his desktop but I can't seem to get it to work. Not matter what I do (I have tried every bit of advice this wonderful forum has to offer) and so for all I get is "Acquiring Network Address." When I run ipconfig, it returns and ip address of 0.0.0.0 and a subnet mask of 0.0.0.0. Customer service for D-Link and Qwest were useless (spent most of the time blaming each other), so any help you guys and gals can lend me would be stupendous.

A:Stuck on "Acquiring Network Address" for Wireless Adapter on Windows XP

(from a JohnWill post)

IP addresses of 0.0.0.0 are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
1. DHCP Service not running.
2. Duplicate IP address on the network.
3. Bad NIC card drivers.
4. Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
1. Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.
2. Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, reboot the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.
3. Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.
4. Replace the Network Interface Card.

the laptop I am typing this from wi-fi works, I have a Gateway MX6920 that originally had Windows XP on it, I wiped that and installed Windows 7. and have very few installed programs on it. Openoffice, firefox, teamviewer, Gimp, and a steam game is all that's on it (and an Antivirus) but it will no longer connect to my wi-fi, it used to but now doesn't. I have 'limited access' and the troubleshooter says "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. how do I fix?

A:"Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

So, are you saying when running XP the wi-fi and internet connection was working but has never worked the same under W7 ? Or.... it has worked since you changed to W7 but now for some reason it does not ?

Hi I am unable to access IP have doesn't Network "Wireless a configuration Connection" valid the Internet I am connected to a wireless network with excellent signal strength All other devices in my home are "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration also successfully connected to the network and have Internet access My PC did as well until about three evenings ago when it began displaying a yellow exclamation point on the relative icon in the system tray as well as a red quot X quot on the second leg of the map within the network and sharing center I have attempted numerous fixes over the past several days and for several hours today alone all from posts with a title similar to this post However none of these efforts have resulted in success Incidentally I am running Windows What would you suggest Finally I am posting this from my smart phone because I am unable to access the internet from the laptop in question so I am unable to provide the system info as suggested above Thank you nbsp

A:"Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

A few things to try
does it work if connected by cable

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

try doing a tcp/ip reset - see how below ( as you cant post the results, let me know about any errors)

can we see an ipconfig /all

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

For Windows 8
To open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.
For windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

Now type CMD

Now press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

You have to tell us what network you are connecting to so you can get help. No info = no help.

You could start by describing physically how your computer connects to the lan and then the internet.

Hello,

I am not a computer whiz, but all of a sudden my laptop wont connect to my wireless network---other devices on my network are connecting just fine, checked the router and wireless adapter, both are fine. I have seen some posts about possible fixes, but am wondering if this is easy enough to fix myself?

Thanks for your help

A:my sony laptop won't connect to wireless network--"identifying"

Yes, I believe this should be a easy fix for ya. The first and easiest thing to try is to power cycle both the modem and router so it will "reset" them both. Unplug both of them for about a minute or so; then plug the modem back in first and let that fully boot; then plug the router back in and let that fully boot. If that does not fix the problem, then i would go into the device manager in the control panel and completely uninstall the wireless adapter(s) reboot; and let windows re-detect the adapter(s) and reinstall the drivers for them and hopefully that will correct the issue.

When I click on the "wireless network connection" to see more detailed information it looks like this:

Activity
-------------------------Sent --------------- Received
Packets:-------694,269------------------634,377
Errors::----------------87---------------13,448,509

Wait about 2 minutes & here's how much the figures have changed:

Packets:-------695,260------------------634,422
Errors:-----------------87---------------13,834,804

QUESTION: Why are the errors so high?
Why do the errors seem to be increasing at a rate MUCH higher than even the number of packets being sent?
What could be causing this?
Are there any negative consequences of this?
I am able to connect to the internet and other computer on the network just fine, but is this indicative of some kind of problem, hack (trojan/virus)-anything to worry about? Or am I losing any potential speed do to this?
Is there a way to fix it? etc.
Should I care?

Thanks in advance for any & all info.

A:"wireless network connection" more ERRORS received than packets sent...WHY???

It's most likely an indication of some issue with the hardware in the network. My guess is you're having a log of collisions on the Ethernet link.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Make/model of the broadband modem. If dial-up, please specify.
Make/model of the router (if any).
Connection type, wired, wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.)
Make/model of network card or wireless adapter.
Make/model of your computer (motherboard if home-built).
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2, Vista, etc.

I was connected to my neighbors wireless network via Linksys for several months, but after he had it shut off and reconnected they gave him a different IP address, ID and password. I have all the passwords and the signal shows up, but it is continually "aquiring a network address". Does he have to change something in his settings to allow access once again?

A:Wireless connection "acquiring network address" continually

Let's give this a shot, practicing our ipconfig and netsh commands...

Open an elevated command prompt.

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset reset.log

ipconfig /release (be patient)

ipconfig /renew (be patient)

ipconfig /all

should show your ip address. Hopefull this will work for you.

hello all,

my internet has previously worked without any problems. two days ago, it said i was connected with limited connectivity. i tried disabling/enabling my wireless, unplugging the wireless router, and running troubleshoot. the computer said that my wireless network connection doesnt have a valid IP configuration. neither of my roomates had this issue (they can still get to the internet fine). i was worried that it was something with my internet, so i went to a friends house and it worked there. i then ran system restore to a period when internet worked, thinking it could have been a bad update, but still no change. i went into my IP address configuration, and it is all set to automatically find. not sure where to go from here. any help?

i have an asus computer, windows 7 ultimate (32bit).

A:"Wireless network connection" doesnt have a valid IP configuration...

If you can type ipconfig/all into an Elevated Command Prompt then post a screen shot of the results it would be very helpful.

It sounds like the wireless profile for your home connection was somehow corrupted or changed.

You can usually straighten that out by going into the Wireless Connection Manager in the Network and Sharing Center and making sure that the settings match the ones in your router.

The Bonjour service which installs with iTunes and Adobe Photo shop is also famous for causing this problem.

To fix ...
Run MsConfig

Under the Services tab uncheck the service called "##Id_String1.6844[... and then a bunch of numbers]" by Apple

Reboot and problem solved

To delete the Bonjour service.
1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Bonjour
2. Rename the mdnsNSP.dll file in that folder to mdnsNSP.old
3. Restart your computer
4. Delete the Program Files\Bonjour folder

A:"wireless network connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

Hello mystic, and welcome to Sevenforums!

First, do you have the latest driver installed for it? I don't know what version of windows you have so here is the general link to the drivers: Samsung - you will need the wireless driver(s). Uninstall your current wireless driver before installing the new one, which means you will need to download the new one first or use a LAN cable to have an internet connection to download the driver.

Here is an internet troubleshooting guide you might be able to use: Internet Troubleshooting Guide

However, it sounds like this computer works at home, just not at the hospitol, so it may be some kind of incompatability or any number of reasons. Make sure you have all windows updates installed as that can sometimes help such issues.

I connect a Dell desktop running Windows XP to my Linksys WRT160N wireless router using a Linksys WUSB600N network adapter. I can connect to the router no problem from accounts set as administrator, but when I change an account to "limited" I can no longer connect from that account.

I'm using the Linksys monitor software utility to manage the connection.

I had the same problem with my old Belkin g router and network adapter. I didn't change network hardware solely to fix this problem, but I was hoping that would be one benefit of the change.

I'm running McAfee Security, but even when I disable this functionality I still have the same problem, so it doesn't appear that McAfee is a likely cause of the problem.

I would appreciate any suggested solutions.

A:Can't connect to wireless network from "limited" user accounts

make sure that the driver & the wireless utility are correctly installed to limited user account.
for drivers, u can right click my computer & select properties & go hardware tab & select device manager, see if there anything with question mark.
does it tell you that you can use the wireless utility or u can't even launch it?

the computer which has the problem is an Acer Aspire X3400, 64-bit operating system.

i get the unidentified network no internet access thing come up when i click on the little symbol at the bottom which has the yellow warning triangle infront of it. i have tried disabling the connection and restoring it. releasing the ip and renewing it. i have tried to update the driver (ethernet cable) but it says it is up to date. in the driver management there is a yellow triangle next to the USB network interface. dont know what that means but it could be some help to your guys.

A:"Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

i have moved to networking - can we see a device manager and ipconfig /all
what security suite - firewall is on the system , often they come with a timetrail version of norton, mcafee etc

also try safemode with networking

see below
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

windows key and pause Key should open to allow device manager to be seen on laptops may need to use windows key + FN key + Pause Key
if not then

Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >

Hi all, so I have gotten the above message when trying to connect to my wireless, and it's saying I have limited access to the connection. I know it's not a router/modem issue as all other computers in the house are connecting without trouble. This all happened after I attempted to uninstall "Adaware" which I had installed to find and remove a nasty keylogger. Halfway through uninstalling I got a blue screen of death, and when I rebooted, I couldn't connected to the wireless. Anyone know of a potential solution?

They are fast and they can download things at a normal fast speed. My new computer, when it actually connects, is incredibly slow at downloading anything. It can't stay connected without switching to "identifying..." for minutes at a time and it is so frustrating. I constantly try the troubleshooting and it usually just tells me that there is something wrong with the router but obviously not if all the other computers work. Just recently I noticed it said "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

Is that the reasoning behind all my problems?

Why can my computer connect to a public network but not my home network

What does that mean and how can I fix it? ?

Actually the information that you've received from the trouble shooter is probably more accurate, then you give it credit for. I suspect you will need to look into a firmware update for your router and see if that might resolve your issue.

Please assist
I know this is an old post, but I am encountering the same problem and I can't connect to the internet.

A few days ago, my network was connecting to it's normal name but later I was not able to connect because it is names "BLAH 2" I disabled it and my original one popped up again and it's fine.

Now, I can't even disable and enable back to my original one. I've tried deleting it on that screen shot that was given and connecting again but still no luck.

I can't seem to connect back to my original network name. Please help!

Thank you.

A:Wireless network creating 2 names and can not connect, "BLAH 2"

Go to control panel, select Network and Sharing and you should from there be able to either connect or disconnect.

I have purchased an older IBM Thinkpad that has been upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro. When I am in range of a known public Wi-fi network, or nearby to my home QSL modem (that has a built in router), the computer does not indicate that it has located an available network. This is when using, separately, both a Wi-fi card and a USB wireless adapter. (I have installed the required drivers.) When I consult the network connection information, it says, in either case: network cable unplugged. I can connect to the Internet via my home modem, if I plug the computer in directly, using an ethernet cable. But this does not solve the issue of being able to use a public network, when away from home.
I have also tried to set up a new network, but Windows 2000 does not seem to offer "setting up a wireless network" as an option. Any ideas?

I'm running windows 7 on an HP Pavilion dm4 and I've been trying to connect to the internet and whenever I troubleshoot it gives me the error "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I've tried restoring to before the problem came up and ive also tried ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew and the netsh int ip c:resetlog.txt commands and it still wouldn't work. I can't connect to the internet at all with that computer, even using an ethernet cable, so I can't run a fix for the problem. Any clue how I could fix this?

Hi All,

Hoping to get some direction or help here...

I have two Toshiba laptops, both have inbuilt WiFi connections.
I have a Satellite P20 with Win XP and a Satellite P100 with Vista.
I connect to a Cable Modem through a Buffalo Wireless Access Point running WEP and with SSID Broadcast On.

The P20 (XP) unit connects with no problems.
The P100 (Vista) intermittently drops to "Limited Connectivity". Sometimes switching the WiFi card off and on, using the external switch, will return the connection, as will Disabling/Enabling the card. But, in each case, the connection normally lasts just a few minutes before dropping again.

I have reset the Modem, and the Wireless Access Point, but with no improvement.

Any ideas?

Hello Guys and Girls,

My wireless internet connections are currently set to a manually configured status, but this means I am having problems connecting to other wireless connections with free (ie unsecured) connections. I have tried going to properties and ticking the "Let Windows configure my wireless network settings", but I get a dialogue box coming up telling me that not all of my changes have been made.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

A:Solved: Changing wireless connection status from "Manually Configured" back to "Automatic"

Why don't we start with the make/model of the wireless router in use, as well as the wireless adapter or laptop brand. Also, what version and patch level of Windows do you use?

If you have XP-SP2, you can set the machine back to installation defaults using the following procedure.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

While flying through my computer. I found this instance that has me confused. I was looking at my network. Decided to go to the map and saw the basic map. (image 1).

When I clicked on "see full map" link it showed the network map, only between my computer and my wireless router there is a connection to a "?". (image 2)

I am wondering why this is so. I tried right clicking on it, no option available. And when I put my mouse over the pictures of computer and router, a link option is available to click. When I put mouse over "?" there is no link hand. I was wondering should I be concerned. Any explanation would be helpful. I am using a belkin wireless router.

A:W7 Network map tree with "?" between laptop and wireless router

I've been watching this thread in the hopes that someone would answer your question. Since that has not happened yet, I'll repeat some of what I've read about this. Some people have speculated that the mapping process is seeing two separate networking devices (a wireless access point and a router/switch), but it does not want to assign the same name to both devices... so one of the two devices just gets a question mark.

I have no idea if the info above is correct. I would be interested in hearing the thoughts of others on this topic.

It may help to reset the N900 Netgear router using the reset button on the side of the router. It's fairly typical for the wireless to go out while the wired connection will keep on working.

It sometimes requires a 30-30-30 reset to fix the router.

I setup WPA2 on my router and everyone can connect just fine.

But a new laptop with Windows 7 that used to be able to connect before I set WPA2 can no longer connect.

It takes a few minutes connecting saying "Identifying" then ends up saying it's connected with "Unidentified network". Can't ping the router, can't get to the internet etc.

I've tried rebooting both the laptop and router, network diagnostic (which just tells me to reboot the router) etc and nothing works.

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to do some customer service via long distance. Have some friends I set up a Linksys WRT160N wireless router for about two weeks ago. Just a desktop hardwired into the router and one wireless laptop using a secure connection. No big deal (or so it seems...)

These friends live about 3 hours away and they just realized that whenever the desktop logs on to the Internet, it bumps off the laptop. I've had them check the naming configurations for the laptop and the PC, but those seem to be fine.

I haven't worked with Linksys routers before so wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows of a quick fix, or what to specifically look for before I remote in and start doing some tinkering.

Thanks in advance!

A:BSOD = "Limited Access" on wireless network

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

3. When we are connected, we are still getting an annoying balloon over wireless ion in the taskbar tray saying, "Wireless Network cannot be found".

We need to shut this off. We do not care about wireless connections; we are on a wired network. We cannot find the right button or switch wiothin any software to make this happen. This is not a problem with the wireless because at home we connect wirelessly and have for years, without a problem. We just loaded Ipass at work today and this started up.

I've had a wireless problem with my laptop for the last 6 months and despite several attempts to get it working, it just won't connect.

I've enabled DHCP, tested the card and it's fine, checked my key has been entered correctly, configured my router, and everything looks fine. I just can't see what's happening with it.

Every time my wireless tries to connect, it doesn't get any further than 'acquiring network authentication'

It's a Broadcom by the way.

I'm coming close to just selling the damn thing...

Any ideas?

Hi guys, I have done a lot of research to try to solve this proble, but it seems like every problem is specific to the computer/router that you have.
I have a compaq nc6400 with windows xp professional,
when i do an ipconfig,
my ip address is 0.0.0.0
and my subenet mask is 0.0.0.0
there is nothing listed under connection-specific dns suffix, or default gateway.

My router is either a linksys wrt310n, or a linksys wcg200 (I am living in an apartment where the landlord set up 2 routers, so I am not sure which one I am connecting to)

I also know that my connection works with other computers because I can access the connection fine with my other computer (where I am typing from right now)
Please help me with the huge headache!

Hello,
I have a Dell Vostro 1720 with Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN. Yesterday, my wireless network at home stopped working. In Wireless Network Connections, it says "Limited access". I'm not sending or receiving any packets, but my wireless connection is strong. When I troubleshoot the problem, it says that there might be a problem with the driver for the Wireless Network Connection adapter. I updated the driver and there are no caution signs in the device manager. I made sure I didn't have an AVG connection under Networking Properties as suggested elsewhere. I even tried manually configuring the IPv4 properties. I'm not sure what else to try at this point. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello.

Moved in to a new house and had Comcast install cable modem. I'm using a linksys WRT54G, with an Atheros AR5006EG card in my laptop. Previously the wirless network worked fine.

Now the laptop finds and connects to the wireless network, but as local only - no internet. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I have a problem. A certain wireless network PCCard decided to suddenly stop working. It used to work fine, but now when I try to connect it says "acquiring network address" for a long time, then it says I have limited or no connectivity (even though the signal strength is good). I hadn't made any changes to the system before this happened, and replacing it with another older card I have works fine. Anyone knows what the problem might be? Has the card simply broken, or could it be a deeper problem? Thanks!

I am trying to connect to a wireless network in my apartment available through my landlord in the next building - I m not hacking it and not having much luck I am using a PC Windows SE with a Linksys WMP G v wireless card I visited my landlord and the network is a little odd There is a modem connected to a switch via Ethernet cable The switch has two other things plugged into it an iMac running OS having an Ethernet address beginning with and a similar address cannot strange found" be wireless - "Internet network listed in the router part of the Ethernet preference screen - it looks like a static IP an Airport Express box router - the light is green "Internet cannot be found" - strange wireless network From my PC I can see the wireless network the signal is not great - or something and seem to be able to join it via the password not sure whether it s or WEP strangely enough - both settings seem the same I do get the message quot You are connected to the Access Point but the Internet cannot be found quot I don t get a proper IP address - I get something starting with When I visited my landlord to look at the network I tried accessing the Airport Express through his computer but it doesn t show up in either the Admin utility or the Airport Setup Assistant I tried unplugging his computer from the network and attaching the Ethernet cable directly from his computer to the Airport Express but it still doesn t show up I assume it was configured using that machine at one time but no-one seems to know My neighbour in the suite above the landlord s has a newer iBook that can connect with the AirPort Express and join the wireless network without a problem Her iBook was set to receive an IP address via DHCP and had an address of I think I m guessing that the AirPort Express gave that address to the iBook and is acting like a router I wish I could see the settings on the Airport Express - maybe I ll see if I can access it through her iBook seeing as the landlord s computer can t even see it I don t understand how it s working that the Airport Express and the landlord s iMac are both connected to the modem via a switch - I would have figured you d have to have one device managing the addresses and connecting to the Internet and any other computers or network devices running through that one Both the landlord and my neighbour seem to have no problems accessing the Internet my landlord I can sort of understand as he s only separated from the modem via a switch yet I don t get why the Airport Express attached to the same switch isn t giving him problems I ve tried giving my computer a static IP address that s one greater than my neighbour and copying her settings I think the gateway is - I have it written at home where I don t have Internet access - sorry Everything gives me the same quot but the Internet could not be found quot message I ve tried reinstalling the Linksys card using the Windows Add Hardware wizard Can anyone give me any advice as to what I can do I m going to try accessing the Airport Express using my neighbour s wireless connection and the Airport Admin Utility or Setup Assistant to see if I can see what the settings are I wonder why the landlord s computer can t even see it - it s connected through the same switch Is it maybe that my PC and Linksys card are just incompatible with the Airport Express I have a router - maybe I can see if the landlord will let me replace the switch with a router that will manage the DHCP for everyone and then try to get the Airport Express to stop DHCP and just pass things along to the router Thanks for any information anyone can give me - I m pretty stuck nbsp

A:"Internet cannot be found" - strange wireless network

"I would have figured you'd have to have one device managing the addresses and connecting to the Internet and any other computers or network devices running through that one."

Not at all. The whole point of the internet is decentralisation and as long as your machine knows how to get to a router, you're connected. There is no problem with running two DHCP servers (that each use a different IP address range), and having a router separate to them, as long as they know that it is the default gateway.

However, if they're not configured with each other in mind, problems can arise. Certainly having one DHCP-capable router and making the airport more of a bridge is not a bad idea.
Now, the 169 address - that looks like an automatic Windows address. It's the kind of thing you get when you just connect a few Windows machines to each other, without any internet connexion. This leads me to speculate that somewhere along the line you're talking to another Windows PC... You're sure you're connecting to the right network?
Sorry I couldn't help any more
